Main Task Evaluation: Question 2
1. Question 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?
2. Alternative Representation My magazine presents a Alternative Representation as it looks at the men as the dominant gender in the brass band world, although in modern society this is not the true representation. My magazine also views the younger generation as ‘true class’ instead of drop-outs as that is what they are perceived as in many other media products. How my magazine represents men. A ‘Traditional’ Man
3. Challenging stereotypical representations After researching brass band magazines I noticed that their focus on the Northern bands as being the ‘best of their era’ distorted reality. I felt that this was not the case and challenged this view and decided to focus on the midland brass bands. Stereotypical representative band.
4. Developing stereotypical representations After looking at stereotypical social groups related in the ‘traditional’ brass band world, I decided to portray my models as working class musicians as this connotes class, style and discipline. I created this view through the dress that my models wore. As you can see the main image (left) my models were wearing shirts and trousers and waistcoats. In the other images they were wearing Jeans and a shirt, both images make the models look smart and not ‘slumps’.
5. Choosing My Location I decided to choose a church for the main sell photo shoot, this was because I felt that a church is not the most dominant location for a brass band and I wanted to challenge the dominant ideology by making it my dominant place.
