When you are not given much chooses a circumstance can be a huge obstacle in your life. My
obstacle was Spanish. I am Mexican but I was raised in an English speaking home where my parents
always new Spanish from early ages, but me, I only knew few words up until a few years ago. My
mom was born in Mexico and Spanish was her first language while my father born here was raised
in a Spanish speaking home his whole life. Everyone around me on my mother's side minus a few
cousins spoke Spanish: grandparents, uncles, and aunts. After years of ignorance I felt it was time to
finally learn Spanish so I could effectively communicate with my family. Plus living in the

The word "Spanish rice" comes from a time when the Spaniards continued their travels around the
world, they went to Asia and from there they brought back to Mexico things like wheat and rice.
Mexican people that prepare the rice dish often speak the Spanish language, which is where the
name "Spanish rice" dish came from. Spain is actually the second largest producer of rice in the
world with China being the first largest producer.
Spanish rice is one of the most popular dishes in the Latin American. It is a common side dish in
Northern Mexico and is also popular outside of Mexico, especially in the Southwestern United
States. American Southwestern people refer to the dish as "Mexican rice" however; Spanish rice and
Mexican rice are relatively different. Mexican rice sometimes uses cumin and Spanish rice uses
saffron instead. Spanish rice is a side dish made from white rice, tomatoes, garlic, onions, and other
ingredients. It is traditionally made by sautéing the rice in a skillet until it is golden brown. Water or
chicken broth is then added along with chopped tomatoes or tomato sauce. Parsley can be added for
a little color, but it does not change the taste very much. Vegetables are also added such as chilies,

Throughout my high school and middle school years, I have had the opportunity to study the
language of Spanish in a classroom setting. I walked into my first class assuming that it would be
quite easy to learn a new language, however my presumptions were quickly erased. During my first

I no longer pressured myself to learn the language, instead I just let it happen. I soon was able to
express my thoughts and feelings while speaking in the Spanish language. A class that had once
been so frustrating was now a true enjoyment and a strength of mine. I now have the ability to
communicate with Spanish speaking natives and no longer worry about a language barrier. I am able
to hold a conversation and it allows myself to feel comfortable towards the person I am speaking

The Spanish Inquisition lasted from 1478 to 1834. The goal of the Spanish Inquisition was to expel,
convert or kill all Non–Catholics from Spain in Spain. When people were accused heresy they
would be pit on trial, but before they could be on trial they had to sit in jail which most of them were
unsanitary and people were given little food to eat. The punishments people received if they were
found guilty were: torture, public humiliation, and death. The trials were unfair, unjustified and not

There were three main punishments to trials in the Spanish Inquisition. The punishments were being
relaxed, reconciled, and penanced. The most minor punishment was being penanced. People were
fined, banished from the country or forced to wear an embarrassing hat called Sanbenito to show to
the public that they have sinned. After the person's time of wearing the hat it was hung up so the
public humiliation would continue for many years to come. Being reconciled was the second worst
punishment. People were sentenced to different punishments if they were reconciled. They were
sentenced to row the galleys for extensive periods of time, flogging, or serve long prison terms. All
of the person's property and goods were taken if they were reconciled. Being relaxed is ironically
the most serious punishment involving death. People were burned at the stake alive. If they died or
escaped while awaiting their trial they were burned in effigy, which is a sculpture of a person. This

that is increasingly prominent in the global Hispanic society. These differences lie in the
grammatical, lexical and phonological features of the two variations of both the variant and the
original form of the language. Latin American Spanish, spoken in countries such as Mexico,
Panama, Chile and Honduras all adopted the Spanish language in the late 15th century and have
since made Latin American Spanish one of the most widely spoken variations of the Spanish
language in the world. The difference of the phonological features between Latin American Spanish
and Peninsular Spanish is a prime example, as the sounds of the vowels can differ depending on the

for centuries to come. King Ferdinand V and Queen Isabella of Spain started the Spanish Inquisition
in September of 1480; however, it was two years earlier in the November of 1478 that Pope Sixtus

Witnesses were sworn in and if one lied they would be seriously punished– death being a possibility.

Spanish possesses all three. Throughout my entire life, I have always wanted to speak and
understand Spanish. Passing phrases and conversations would captivate my mind and give me a

themselves a supreme power. King Philip II decided to send the Spanish Armada to invade and
attack England. In this time period, hostilities stirred up between two powerful countries that wanted
what was best for themselves. Spain at the time was just starting to gather forces and begin the
development of their fleet. Well, in the year 1588 Queen Elizabeth I constructed a fleet of her own,
which later became one of the most dominant navies in the world. The Spanish Armada was a major

Why Is Spanish Important
I have been taking Spanish since fifth grade as a mandatory class and have come to love being able
to understand and use a language in both academic settings and real–life situations. Spanish, in
particular, is helpful to know in the U.S because it is the second most spoken language. I hear it all

I grew up. It was not until my friend, Michelle Martino, began telling me about the wonderful
program she is in at Southern Connecticut State University for Spanish Secondary Teaching; it was
in that moment that I realized that teaching Spanish was where my true passion was. Because of this
epiphany, I decided to tackle another independent performance project focusing on teaching
Spanish. My original concept was to only do so at NBIS until I was approached by the primary
grade teacher, Ms. Prota. I truly found my niche. At NBIS, I worked with Ms. Ducharme, who I had
for my Spanish I teacher. I spent many hours observing her teaching style as well as her classroom's
attributes. Both aspects helped me better understand what teachers need in order to be successful.
One thing I did in order to head start my own classroom was purchasing latinoamericanos flags and
several posters. I discussed with Ms. Ducharme different theories of how a Spanish class could be
taught. My thought, now, is to teach in the target language while connecting it to students' native
language. In addition to observing, I made copies, preparing for upcoming lessons, and even was
