2. David joined JewishCare when it was called
Jewish Community Services in 1999, taking
the place of Mr Hershel Klein, who retired
from the board due to ill health
At the time, the board had introduced some
younger members, and was getting ready for
a merger with Montefiore Homes
The merger took place in 2001
3. At the merge, the two boards joined and
about half the members of each board stood
down
David continued on the merged JewishCare
board, and founded/chaired the Jewish
Values Committee
This committee oversaw
◦ Significant improvements to kashrut
◦ The establishment of the values that underpin
JewishCare
◦ The integration of those values throughout the
organisation
4. David also joined the loan committee as the
official board representative
While there, he drove many improvements to
processes and governance, making loans
more available and growing the number of
loans
After resigning from the board in 2007, David
continues to serve on the loan committee and
is now in the process of expanding the range
of services it supervises
5. David joined the inaugural board of
Australian Jewish Funders in 2005 and
remains a director
Following the Monash Gen08 survey, David
has driven several initiatives aimed at
increasing next generation engagement with
Jewishness, including
◦ Bringing ROI to Australia
◦ Opening the first Moishe House in Australia
6. The Werdiger family have maintained a strong
interest in Jewish education
David has written about this for the Australian
Jewish News, and also on eJewishPhilanthropy
David and his sister run the family grant program
which assists middle-income families with school
fees at Jewish day schools
David is also a director of Lamdeni, the second-
largest provider of informal Jewish education for
children
7. After many years of giving and facilitating
shiurim and minyanim in the Melbourne
CBD, David and several others founded JBD –
Jews of the CBD
This organisation fills an important gap in the
market for Jews in Melbourne, providing
◦ A mincha minyan
◦ Shiurim and education
◦ Networking and social events
