• Reticular Activating System (RAS)
• A universal cognitive mechanism constantly -
• operating below the conscious level,
• filtering as well as scanning sense perceptions.
• „Value Added‟ proposition, Why talk about the RAS?

• Maltz credits academic Prescott Lecky
• Dr. Norbert Weiner, Programmable Guidance
• A goal striving servo-mechanism used by the mind
• Theorized we all share a desire for „more life‟ –
happiness, success, peace of mind
• Theorized an Automatic Success Mechanism
• Goals conveyed to the ASM are filtered through
the self-image and subject to self consistency
• Proposed a “Theater of the Mind”

9. How does this look in your lives?
• At your tables discuss
• Do these observations about Self-Image and
Performance resonate in what you see of your life?
• Expand your frame of reference ….
• If I have children, how does this apply?
• What about the rest of your life, work, community?
• Converse, take notes, be ready to share
10. The TED Video Amy Cuddy
• Anyone view the TED Video by Amy Cuddy?
• What thoughts and ideas from her story tie into
today‟s topics?
11. Selective Attention
• If indeed, we proceed to act upon our Self-
Image “just as if it were true”, what is the RAS
doing?
12. Homework before next time
• Compose a personal list of times when things
went extraordinarily well for you, when your
performance or achievement was even a little
above your expectations.
• Keep this success list in a journal, notebook or
other safe place where you can retrieve it and
add to it as you recall additional memories that
should be added to your list
• Practice a “Theater of the Mind”
13. Resources before next time

Concept, Self-Esteem

14. Resources before next time
• Winners Circle Network, from Pacific Institute
• http://www.pacificinstitute.com
• Jim Stovall, Motivation Consultant, tweets
• Go look up Jim on the Internet
• Jim has an amazing story, and I have a story too
• Own and use the phrase “I know there is an
answer even if I don‟t see it just yet”
15. If You‟re Stuck and need a Breakthrough
• If this all seems like you‟ve heard it before
and it never worked before …..
• Begin thinking on the question “Do I have
to or do I want to?”
• More on this next time!

Amy Cuddy’s personal story and scientific method, for me , was an awesome blend of science and humanitiesLeslie’s comment, borrowing upon “Speed of Trust” idea, she combined that with the RAS idea to talk about how thatChanges things when you TRUST someone in the community –and- then your RAS is pre-disposed to see more positiveabout that person and to discount a negative.Allow discussion and talking to emerge and percolate before …“I’ve got some more Fabulous Resources for you later today “ FORGING AHEAD
Plastic Surgeon Amazed that some people’s lives would be transformed for the better …. while others could not believe they were ‘more physically beautiful’ after surgeryRead this after the “Mirror Image” Bullet.“This self-image is our own conception of “the sort of person I am.” It has been built up from our own beliefs about ourselves. Most of these beliefs about ourselves have unconsciously been formed from our past experiences, our successes and failures, our humiliations, our triumphs, and the way other people have reacted to us, especially in early childhood. From all of these we mentally construct a self (or a picture of self). Once an idea or belief about ourselves goes into this picture it becomes “truth”, as far as we personally are concerned. We do not question its validity, but proceed to act upon it just as if it were true.”
FUNNY TITLE!Lecky theorized that student failure to learn might be that it would be inconsistent – from the student’s point of view, to be successful learning things he/she believed were their ‘Problem Subjects’ Lecky’s book “Self Consistency, A Theory of Personality” details his experiments and success with changing student’s self-image Maltz believed that we possess a basic drive for achieving happiness, success, peace of mind etc. He and others theorized that we possess an automatic goal striving capability to help us achieve those ends. It “Steers” us towards our achievements. However self consistency, ie sanity is required by keeping “life” congruent with the expectations of the self-image. In Essence, we are guidance programmed (Cybernetics) to continue to be the sort of person we believe ourselves to be, even if the belief is that “I’m Poor”, “I’m a smoker”, “I drink to excess”, “I fail in school” … So ….. “Exercise the Theater of the Mind”Discussion/Thoughts?
PAGE 53The Basketball Free Throw experiment RESEARCH QUARTERLY3 groups, 20 minutes a day, throwing, doing nothing, visualizingMeasured accuracy first day and last day,+24%+0%+23%Maltz also explores the implications from Hypnosis, bypassing the self-image, and citing numerous athletic and/or physical performance barriers that are exceeded when suggestion is given under hypnosis. He sees these as Proof Points that we can achieve higher levels of performance when the self-image is “managed”
CULTURAL FACTORS “The rapid increase in the number of girlsachieving very high scores on mathematics tests once thought to measure innate ability suggeststhat cultural factors are at work. Thirty years ago there were 13 boys for every girl whoscored above 700 on the SAT math exam at age 13; today that ratio has shrunk to about 3:1.”“This report demonstrates the effects of societal beliefs and the learning environment on girls’achievements and interest in science and math. One finding shows that when teachers andparents tell girls that their intelligence can expand with experience and learning, girls do betteron math tests and are more likely to say they want to continue to study math in the future.”“Research profiled in this report shows that negative stereotypes about girls’ abilities in mathcan indeed measurably lower girls’ test performance. Researchers also believe that stereotypescan lower girls’ aspirations for science and engineering careers over time. When test administratorstell students that girls and boys are equally capable in math, however, the difference inperformance essentially disappears, illustrating that changes in the learning environment canimprove girls’ achievement in math.”“Bias, Often Unconscious, Limits Women’s Progress inScientific and Engineering Fields” Major Report Quotation“If women and men in science and engineering know that this bias exists, they can work to interrupt the unconscious thought processes that lead to it. It may also help women specifically to know that if they encounter social disapproval in their role as a computer scientist or physicist, it is likely not personal and there are ways to counteract it.” 50 Years Since MALTZ, Self Image & Performance Continues to be Validated
This Lunch and Learn format demands brevity in treatment of the topicHowever , across a 50 year period there has been consistent evidence supporting the view that Self Image impacts Performance And Performance can be examined in many dimensionsProfessional or Academic achievementEarnings, Sports, FamePersonal developmentSuccess in marriage, as a parent, as a friend
Allow time for discussion to develop(Self Image can be “managed” i.e. Theater of the Mind)It’s not just the power of the mind that we can bring to our assistance, Amy proved that we can summon body chemistry tooMy own personal story of physically collapsing in front of the crowd at “my NEW job” may be appropriate as a discussion starterWe’re going to go deeper in subsequent days of the series on how to “Manage”
Isn’t the RAS selectively filtering our perceptions to confirm and maintain our self-image?And might it not also be filtering out opportunities for higher achievement or higher performance,if those opportunities might be in conflict with an underlying component of our self-image?
Theater of the MindExplain that Maltz’s idea was for people to get into a quiet place and mentally prepare foran upcoming event by visualizing the scene unfolding in your mind’s eye successfully. The more detail involved, the better for you.For Jack Nicklaus, the theater was utilized before every golf shot.Use it for whatever you want to hone, refine, perfect and enjoy.
Lisa Van Allen’s quote from her WordPress Blog“…mine (her book) is more focused on mindset. I created an assessment tool I have been calling the Belief Quotient that looks at 7 beliefs:resilience, connectedness, initiative, excellence, abundance, faith and purpose. My aim to assist others in identifying beliefs that can be strengthened to create a more successful, fulfilling life.”
