Front of Pack Labels ---- A need to make health a priority for Packaged food Products Purchase Decisions
Keywords: Packaging, Health, Purchase Decisions
3. What is FoPL
Labelling which informs about brief nutritional contents and are placed on the front side of the pack are
popularly called as Front of pack Labels. (FOPL).
Thus, the purpose of Front of Pack Labelling (FoPL) is to empower consumers to make healthier choices by
providing information about the overall nutritional quality/warning about the nutrients of concern present in the
food product, in a straightforward, easy, simple and clear manner.
4. Why FoPL
Consumers often do not have the time to read labels when shopping, and many also have difficulty
understanding the information provided. In order to make this information simpler and easy to understand for
consumers, and make them aware of what they are eating, front-of pack labelling can be of help.
FOPL provides nutritional information in interpretative form on front of food products labels.
Its objectives are:
• It will help consumers understand product’s nutritional information and to enable them to make better
informed food choices at the point of purchase.
• Healthy choice of food can help prevent and reduce the burden of childhood obesity, NCDs (e.g.,
cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity, and type 2 diabetes) in Indian population.
• It will stimulate healthy product development and reformulation by manufacturers.
5. FoPL Status
• Considering the constant increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cardiovascular disease, obesity,
diabetes and the like, resulting in innumerable deaths year after year. NCD’s and the related deaths in the
country, it has become important that the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) notifies the
FoPL Regulations soon.
• In 2018, the FSSAI proposed a draft Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2018,
highlighting certain criteria for labelling and display on the front of food packs.
• The FSSAI is planning to make FoPL compulsory for food products and is in the process of finalization of its
framework. FoPL supports the consumer in taking decision on purchase of product based on his / her health
conditions.
6. Conclusion
• FoPL can play a significant role to make consumer aware about food products nutritional ingredients
• The companies marketing products can use FoPL as consumer attraction, through FoPL they can inform
consumers that this product is low on contents, which can be harmful for NCDs. Marketing strategies will be
evolved based on FoPL.
• FoPL will be beneficial for both the consumers and the marketers, so implementation of FoPL will be a win
– win situation for the main stakeholders.
