3. Primary research
Primary research is any research that a person undertakes themselves
which could be preformed any variety of ways from giving out a
questionnaire to looking at reports from a film which is useful as it means
people will be able to trust the research itself and there is no bias in the
results that may be found if you gather your research form someone else
an scenario that it may be used is a film producer may ask test groups
about what they think of a film an example for this is in Scott pilgrim vs the
world where the ending was not liked so it was changed.
Positives: up to date, trust worthy source, more flexible
Negatives: time consuming, may not be able to use as big a group as you
like.
4. Secondary research
Secondary research is any research that has been made by someone else
an example of this would be if you ask a friend or college for the results
they got on a questionnaire that is similar to your own the advantages to
taking research this way is that it will allow for people to gather large
quantity's of information that can be looked though with minimal time
which can allow you to use it in conjunction with primary to compare your
results with large numbers of other results to see if the match up. An
example of a way it might be used is a studio looking up what makes a
good horror movie by looking at reports people made of other horror
films.
Positives: quick to gather, can take several at once, good for comparison.
negatives: can be untrusty worthy, results might not be accurate.
5. Comparison and conclusion on
primary and secondary research
Comparison
There are situations where primary research is more beneficial and one where
secondary research because of their deferens which means that secondary
reach is good when a team is on a time limit and needs to be completed
quickly or if there is need for large numbers of results. Where as primary
research is best when there is a long time limit and you can go for more detail
as it allows for a studio to know the reliably of information and allow for them
to have it up to date.
Personal thoughts
But despite them being better than the other in certain circumstances I would
say they work better when used together as they allow for your own results to
be compared with others. Additionally this means there is a larger number of
people who are coved by either method alone.
7. What is quantitative research
Quantitative research is research that is based on me usable and
quantifiable information an example of this is who likes anime as you
would end up with 2 numbers that are simple answers. Benefits of this is
that information is quick to gather and can be looked though quickly
additionally information is most commonly stored in easy to read graphs
which means people are able to understand what it says quickly. This sort
of research might be used by a studio be fore a movie is made to see if
there is a market for the movie that is being made so that it will be seen
and make money.
Positives: quick, allows you to quickly know if there is an market for your
product.
Negatives: does not give you in depth information.
8. What is qualitative research
Qualitive research is research that will give you peoples options such as
why did you hate batman vs superman. Which allows for studios to
understand why a movie was disliked or liked allowing for them to either
copy what people enjoyed about a good film and avoid what made a film
disliked so that it will have a higher probability of being successful.
Because this research is opion it is much harder to sort though and takes
far more time than quantitative research. An example of this form of
research may be a director asking why people enjoyed the prequel to the
movie that are making so they can better catch the essence of the film.
Positives: gives in depth information, allows for detailed analysis.
Negatives: takes a long time to undertake cannot take to many surveys
9. Comparison and conclusion of
qualitive and quantitative research
Comparison.
Much like the previous comparison there is positives and negatives to
each. quantitative research is quick to do and can be done to many
different people as it is much quicker do than qualitive research
additionally it is easy to sort and put in ways that people can understand
with ease such as pie charts and bar graphs which work well at sorting this
information. Where as while qualitive research lacks in the afore
mentioned quality's when compared to quantitative research still has
advantages of its own such as higher quality information as rather than
yes or no answer telling you weather they like a genre it can give you an in
depth description of why people like it which allows for a studio to make
movies which feature points people like about it.
11. How does dividing by demographics
work.
Research is done on several different things one of them being the
audience which is done though splitting up the population into different
sectors which are determined by several things such as wealth, education,
and age this method of splitting a population is though demographics.
The reason for this is it allows for movies/ tv to target people the reason
why this is being that people of one sector are less likely to enjoy a
product made for another an example of this would be the elderly for the
most part do not enjoy game of thrones because of the blood and
promiscuity which is one of the drawing factors of its target audience
young adults.
12. How does dividing by Psychographics
work.
There is a second method to split up a population which is based upon
psychological criteria such as options ideas and attitudes much like
separating people though demographics it allows media to target them
but this way you might instead use it when targeting people based on
their political beliefs such as newspapers which for the most part will stick
to one party while belittling the opposition which results in people who
agree with the view the newspaper reports reading it for confirmation
about their beliefs which results in increased sales from this type of person
however people who disagree with this belief would be unlikely to buy the
product.
13. When to use demographics and
psychographics and benefits it gives.
Demographics and psychographics are both used together in most cases
as that is what is most effective of narrowing down the audience to what a
show is targeting how ever there are some cases where one or the other
can be less important, one example of this would be election time news as
people from most demographics will look at the news to find out what is
going on where as people from different psychographics would look at
different channels and newspapers as they are bias towards one party or
the other.
15. Why do we research the competition
in media.
Completion is present in all parts of life especially where money is to be
made and this remains true in media. And like in other froms of business
companies will do research on the completion so they can operate better.
One way that media uses research for this can be by looking at what the
completion is doing as this allows for them to see what products do well.
Know that there is a market for theses products allows for a company to
create products inspired by this. One example of this in the gaming market
is the success of call of duty which has resulted in many other games like
it. Another example in the movie industry is Halloween which has many
movies made like it which resulted in many clones many of which were sub
par but most of them did well showing it lowers risk to the company
16. Advertising placement
People need to know how and where to advertise a movie if they want
people to know about it. In the past their was only the newspaper to
advertise by so it could reach all audience but times have changed and we
have advertisements in all froms from ad banners on free to play games to
leaflets to the local area which means you need to be a lot more precise
about how you advertise as if you only advertise a game made for
teenagers in a news paper very few for them would read it making the ad
ineffective how ever using YouTube would be a great way to do this
especial as for a slightly higher cost you can chose what sort of videos
your ad would show on allowing you to put them on game review videos
and lets plays so the company knows the people seeing the ads like
games.
18. Resources and viability
Before a production studio creates a movie it would first need to figure out
what resources are needed in the production of the film such as money
and props which would be needed to create the movie an example of why
this is done would be if movie was going to need an helicopter then the
studio would need to see how much one would cost to hire and see how
long they would need to hire it for the movie and decide if it would be a
viable option for them to do. Which brings up the second reason to do
production research which if I the production will be viable or not which in
effect means will the production make enough money to be considered
worth the effort to make an example would be if a movie studio had to 10
mil to make a production and would only get 12 mil back they would be
unlikely to make it.
19. Technical restrictions
When creating movies there is also the technical restrictions to consider.
While these restrictions are not as large as they were in the past with the
evolution of cgi meaning that more and more once impossible to realise
ideas can now be made as long as it fits with in the budget how ever there
are still a fair few restrictions such as in robotics which means if a director
would wish to film a scene using a life like human sized robot it would be
impossible.
