BUSINESS POLICIES
-are the guidelines developed by an organization to
govern its action.
-It permits the lower level management to deal with
the problems and issue without consulting top level
management every time for decisions.
FEATURES OF EFFECTIVE BUSINESS POLICY
1.Specific- Policy should be specific/definite. If it is
uncertain, then the implementation will become difficult.
2.Clear- Policy must be unambiguous. It should avoid
use of jargons and connotations. There should be no
misunderstandings in following the policy.
3.Reliable/Uniform- Policy must be uniform enough so
that it can be efficiently followed by the subordinates.
FEATURES OF EFFECTIVE BUSINESS POLICY
4. Appropriate- Policy should be appropriate to the
present organizational goal.
5. Simple- A policy should be simple and easily
understood by all in the organization.
6. Comprehensive- In order to have a wide scope, a
policy must be comprehensive.

7.Flexible- Policy should be flexible in
operation/application. This does not imply that a policy
should be altered always, but it should be wide in
scope so as to ensure that the line managers use them
in repetitive/routine scenarios.
8. Stable- Policy should be stable, else it will lead to
indecisiveness and uncertainty in minds of those who
look into it for guidance
Example of business policy :
DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE POLICY
The Company explicitly prohibits:
The use, possession, solicitation for, or sale of
narcotics or other illegal drugs, alcohol, or
prescription medication without a prescription.
Example of business policy :
STAFFING POLICY
Select employees from candidates possessing the
required qualifications for a position. When
qualified internal candidates are not available,
external candidates are considered.
Human Resources is solely accountable for
obtaining qualified candidates for all open positions,
conducting reference checks, negotiating
compensation and start date, processing new
employees, and providing all necessary forms to
implement this policy and procedure.
Example of business policy :
DRESS CODE POLICY
Employees are expected to maintain a clean and neat
appearance at all times dressing in a manner
appropriate foe the work being performed. Every
employees must wear their proper uniform during
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Other days
employees may wear jeans(not ripped or faded) and
collared shirts. T-shirts are not allowed.
Example of business policy :
OFFICE SAFETY POLICY
We strive to maintain a safe place to work and to employ safe
workers, it is your responsibility to conduct your work in a safe,
responsible manner, immediately report all accidents occurring
on company premises and job sites to your supervisor. We have
established the following rules:
•Alcohol or drug use on the job is prohibited at all times,
•Removal and bypassing guards on any machine/equipment is prohibited.
•Seat belts are required for drivers and passengers in company vehicles.
•Advise your supervisor of any hazardous conditions or safety concerns you
may have.
•Report all injuries to your supervisor immediately, no matter how minor
Example of business policy :
COMPUTER USAGE POLICY
Personal use of computer by an employee is
prohibited while the employee is on working time.
Must not be used for games, harassment, or foul
messages.
Password for accessing company’s computer is
not allowed.
Formative Assessment: ACTIVITY
Choose a partner and select one (1)
feature of an effective business
policies and explain. To be written on
a half sheet of paper cross wise within
5 minutes.
Formative Assessment: ACTIVITY
RUBRICS: 10 points each.
10 – defined and explained well.
8 – defined, but short explanation.
6 – defined, no explanation.
3 – unclear definition.
0 – no definition and explanation

Assignment:
(Group the class into four)
Choose from the given example of business
policy to be perform in a Role Play on the next
meeting. Use the rubrics as a guide to be able to
set up and plan for each group’s role play.

  1. because if we do not obey we will be sanction for disciplinary action. these rules are set to keep the students safe and it is for their own good.
  2. Call students and ask questions: What is the difference between the school policy and the attendance policy?( if there are) and what are their similarities? Basically, classroom policy and business policy are synonymous with each other, they are similar in various ways like they are both guide for an action to make, they are rule that should be obey, there are consequences to take if not complied and both are for the goodness and safety of the people and the establishment.
  3. Policy- differs from rules or law-Law can compel or prohibit behaviors; policy merely guides actions towards achieving desired outcomes. Ask the class a question: Who set up policies to perform Top Level management-they set up policies to perform their roles and responsibilities affecting their decisions in the long run. These policies must be always observe and obey.
