In his article "What is Greatness" he states that the key factors in becoming great is by

Marquet Turn The Ship Around Summary
Introduction
In the book Turn the Ship Around, Captain L. David Marquet describes how he took the submarine,
the USS Santa Fe, from "worst to first" in the United States fleet by transforming the leadership
structure from "leader–follower" to "leader–leader."
Summary
The author divides the book into four sections. In the first section, Captain Marquet describes how
he first experienced being empowered by his commander Captain Pelaez of the USS Sunfish.
Captain Pelaez overheard the author observe that it would be helpful if they could "ping" a merchant
ship using active sonar for training. Knowing that his permission was needed to go active, Captain
Pelaez suggested that Marquet merely make his intention known to him. The result of having the
authority and ability to develop his team's training resulted in a paradigm shift about effective
leadership for the author.
Marquet was then assigned to the USS Will Rogers as the engineer officer. Eager to implement his
new ideas, Marquet executed a plan to give control to the members of his engineering department,
rather than orders. Unfortunately, his experiment was a profound failure. There were numerous
embarrassing errors that occurred as a direct result of relinquishing control to make decisions to the
men under his command. Instead of motivating the men, they complained that they missed the
former engineer who would just tell them what to do. Ultimately, Marquet took back decision–
making control from his division officers. When his time on the USS Will Rogers ended, Marquet
spent time analyzing why the situation on the USS Will Rogers ended so badly. He concluded that
an empowerment program would not work within a leader–follower organizational structure.
When Marquet was unexpectedly given command of the USS Santa Fe he chose to retain all the
crew members, even though the Santa Fe was considered the laughingstock of the Navy. He wanted
the crew to understand that they were not the problem; instead, the problem was the leadership.
Given the directive to prepare the Santa Fe for deployment, Captain Marquet saw this as an
opportunity to drastically create change by instituting a plan of leadership where the crew would

Ironically, this is perceived through the exaggerated emotive language of having them replaced by a
"direst cruelty". Lady Macbeth pleads, "make thick my blood, stop up the passage to remorse",
conveying that if her blood was made thicker the blood flow throughout her body would slow down

In stories, there is always a pattern that they all have in common. This certain pattern is known as
the Hero's Journey. There are varying descriptions of the Hero's Journey steps but only the steps that
are set by the teacher is used. These steps are the "The Call", "Allies", "Preparation", "The
Guardians of the Threshold", "Crossing the Threshold", "Road of Trials", "Saving Experience",

shows that Brent's parents are objecting on the quest. If their objection is fulfilled, Brent wouldn't
have gone on the quest at first. This fits the standards of being the Guardians of the Threshold but

Fred Rogers and the Disney princesses have a unique similarity in that they both employ an overt
sense of self–esteem in children, which negatively impacts that child's future. Mr. Rogers, through
his television show, has made kids believe that they are special for just being who they are. A similar
idea is also true regarding Disney princesses, in that the little girls who emulate them believe that
life should be lived as a fairy tale. As children grow up, they are very easily influenced by what their

During the Depression, many people were worried about what was going on in Washington. When
Will pointed out some politican who said one thing and did another, or criticized some program in
Washington he didn't approve of, he'd disquise his criticism behind a joke so as not to offend. But
Will would also get straight to the heart of the matter, letting the American people know that he
thought just as they did.
As you can see, Will understood people. In fact,he used to say, "I never met a man I didn't
like." How many of us can say that? He'd go on to explain the Indian belief that "you

do you see things from his perspective. This fairness is remarkable, especially at a time in America
when racism was everywhere. Will's Indian heritage helped him to look at people as people, to see
