Overall, the United States' mission was successful. They, along with United Nations forces, were
able to push back the communists to avoid disaster. This was extremely important because the
United States knew that Asia was very susceptible to the "domino theory" (meaning that once one
nation became communist, they would all become communist) due to the sharing of ideals. The

cornered in the Pusan Perimeter by September of 1950 and a communist victory looked inevitable.
However, the United States ditched their policy of isolationism and joined the war effort alongside
other United Nations forces and supported South Korea. Since the North Koreans now had to send
their supplies all the way down to their soldiers in Pusan, General Douglas MacArthur took
advantage of this and instead of using ground forces to fight the North Koreans in Pusan, MacArthur
used the United States Navy to flank the supply line in the Battle of Inchon which occurred in

sandwiched between World War II and the war in Vietnam it is often overlooked. After World War
II, Korea was split into a communist government in the north and a more democratic government in

The Forgotten War: The Symbols Of The Korean War
After the war, when 1.5 million Americans returned home, they found the US filled with peace and
prosperity as if a war never took place half a world away. The memorial was built a year later, and is
located on 2.2 acres of land and took 9 years to build. In addition, the memorial cost them 18 million
dollars to build. Once they had raised all the money, they started building. The war became known
as the Forgotten War because the Korean War was the last thing the Americans wanted to
memorialize. This made the memorial a huge step to remembering and honoring the war and its
veterans.
The main part of the memorial is the 38 statues, that stand in Juniper bushes in the center of the
memorial. The groundbreaking for the memorial took place on June 14, 1992, which was conducted
by President George W. Bush. The statues are sculpted and designed by Frank Gaylord of Barre,

POW to the Chinese, there was no going into detail or explanations of what happened.

Truman was also given an armed forces analysis report called NSC 68 on the the Soviet Union, the
UN recommended the US to increase its military spending in order to keep up with the Soviet
Union. Lastly, Soviet Union interference in Greece and Turkey made it impossible for Truman not to
intervene with a "war torn" Europe. Truman knew he had to aid European countries in order to ward
off the spread of communism. The Truman Administration was well aware that they were under an
enormous amount of pressure not to appear weak when it came to communism. This is why when
