meditation practices includes the right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right

Meditation has always been seen as a way to keep the mind and soul healthy. Mediation dates back to 1500 BCE originating in Ancient India. The
practice soon started to expand and adapt to other cultures around the world. Some of the earliest references to meditation are found in the Hindu
scriptures and it was around the 6th to 5th centuries that other forms of meditation developed into Confucian, Taoist China, and Buddhist India

Research suggests that meditation may physically change the brain and body and could potentially help to improve many health problems and
promote healthy behaviors. In a 2012 study, researchers compared brain images from 50 adults who meditate and 50 adults who don't meditate.
Results suggested that people who practiced meditation for many years have more folds in the outer layer of the brain. This process (called
gyrification) may increase the brain's ability to process information (Meditation: In Depth).
In many ways, the scientific studies showing how positive mediation has created this craze of mediation. Mediation can be linked to many exercise

instructor Holly Rilinger is a perfect example. Rilinger has created this workout called "Calm and Cardio" starting with a five–minute guided
meditation and then launches into cardio and strength training intervals using bodyweight and dumbbells. During each song, you alternate between

The Day Of My Meditation Practice
It is now the 8th day of my meditation practice. I can't believe how far I have come since the first day. I was already addicted to the feeling and idea of
meditation. I was surprised at how clear my mind was today before I began my mantra recitation. As always, I felt the tension in my body fade away
as I got into my meditative practice. At the end of today's session I felt really good!
I sat on my bed and got comfortable before beginning my meditative practice today. I started off with concentrating on my breathing before reciting my
mantra. I felt my body relax. I was surprise at the feeling of ease and relation mediation was providing to me. I feel very good about this practice.
Today I decided to do something a little different. Instead of repeating my mantra in my head using my own voice, I decided to listen to an audio
playing of the mantra. I sat on my bed and got comfortable before putting on my ear buds on and playing the mantra. It felt different listening to
someone else's voice, however I did enjoy it. I found myself more easily being able to concentrate on the mantra, without having to think about the
words. I felt my body relax and I enjoyed the sensation that was running through my bones.
Once again, I choose to opt to listen to the audio playing of my mantra. I sat down and concentrated on my breathing before hitting play. I enjoyed

Kerouac was a devoted student of the Buddhist way and would often impress his peers with his knowledge of the Sutras and other Buddhist texts and

Mindfulness meditation: Improving everyday life In recent decades mindfulness meditation has grown increasingly popular in modern societies. As
researcher Jean Kristellar (2007) explained, "Mindfulness meditation, also known as "insight meditation" or "Vipassana practice," has helped to show
how meditation can contribute to therapeutic growth and personal development." (pg. 393). My research has found there is a commonly held
misconception that meditation requires the individual to clear their mind of all thoughts, resulting in "mindlessness." However, all meditation
techniques leads to the ability to maintain focus and awareness. Mindfulness meditation is an ability to acknowledge thoughts and observing them in a
non–judgmental manner rather than focusing on a simple object. As humans, we often live our lives on autopilot mode and tend to forget to be aware
of the present. Mindfulness is said to help develop the skill of being aware of yourself and everything around you. Practicing mindfulness aides
promoting relaxation while bringing awareness to the present which leads to taking control over daily life.
What is mindfulness?
In more simplified terms, mindfulness can be defined as being aware of the present moment. Mindfulness is the western translation of the Pali word

Usually in my life I will experience a few negative emotions and thoughts and then briefly affirm that what I am believing is untrue and then switch my
mind to something different. I also have journals that I will write in every once in a while, but it isn't something I use for overcoming negative
emotions. Coming from a conservative, religious family I have always heard that meditation is bad. While Neff practices Buddhist meditation and uses
some of these ideas in her programs to teach self–compassion, after listening to one of the meditation podcasts, I can see the benefit. The meditation
practices she developed helps one relax, become more self–aware, and focused on thoughts of love and compassion not only towards oneself but also
towards others. Another aspect that I had not taken into consideration is the difference between self–compassion and self–esteem. As Neff explains,
self–esteem is basically one's perceived value and worth; however, it is contingent on how one is compared to another. I have never looked at
self–esteem being a problematic, negative term, now I understand the aspects of it that can be detrimental to ones well–being. Always striving to have
high self–esteem leads us to put other people down in the process, it also insinuates that we have to be perfect and better to be worthy, which is the
opposite of what Neff's concept of self–compassion entails. Our society thrives on the idea that one has to be better than their counterpart, what we
lack is this idea of self–compassion. Therefore, I think it would be very beneficial to teach self–compassion in children; this may lead to an overall

Beowulf can at times be in direct conflict with these Christian values. Through this juxtaposition, we see the dichotomies of pride vs. humility and
sacrifice vs. selfishness. When Beowulf relates his battle with Grendel's mother he acknowledges God as his protector as do others. The leader of the
Geats states that he would "gladly trust the force of God's favor" (W.Lit. 922). There is a sense of mystical protection present throughout the story of
Beowulf.
Yet in the story there is also a strong sense that God's protection must be earned; a warrior must first be true to his values, courage, honesty, pride,
and humility and only then will he earn God's protection. In addition to earthly protection, there is also the sense that all earthly good, be it success
or wealth, derives from God. God is described as the "Granter of Grace, true Lord of glory" (W.Lit. 967). The true power lies with God. Any delight
that a man enjoys here on earth is achieved only through the grace of God. Not only that, but the earthly success, given by God, must be handled with

Reflection On Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness
The second transformational practice that I chose to participate in for this course was mindfulness. I decided to perform this in a meditative structure
with similar goals to my first transformational practice, which was a different form of meditation, and see which provided more benefit or was
simply a better fit for me. Decreasing my stress level and reducing work related anxiety were the two primary objectives I was hoping to transform by
engaging in this twice a week.
Through my personal experience with the mindfulness meditation, a lesson that I learned was that this offered a substantial amount of stress relief. Not
particularly attending to thoughts that enter my mind and being mindful of the present, allowed stress from the day to dwindle away. I found the
meditation to be particularly effective on high stress days and this was a welcome event when I had a very hectic day at work. Further, I discovered
that in my case, this form of meditation was better at removing stress than utilizing a mantra meditative technique. Another lesson learned was that
mindfulness meditation did not lessen my work anxiety to any great degree. It may have taken my mind off it during the meditation practice, but I
would feel some anxiousness soon afterwards as thoughts of work began to prevail after my earnest focus during meditation came to an end. However,
I think with more time to develop the practice outside of a meditative setting, it is possible that this could be

Differences Between The Bodhisattva In The Davis Museum
Another more obvious difference between the Bodhisattva in the Davis Museum is the coloring of each. Unfortunately, time has worn away most of
the paint on these heads, but the left Bodhisattva shows more remnants of the original painting, including a small wavy mustache. Red paint can still
be seen in the headdress, the urna and the lines of the neck. Both heads have dark paint outlining the eyebrows and the eyes, offering the viewer a look
into Gandharan culture. One can see the hair was once painted black based on the left Bodhisattva's hair which still contains some of the dark pigment.
While most of the paint has worn away, the naturalistic sculpting style allows the life of the Bodhisattvas to remain intact without the added color.
The sculptures appear dynamic due to the use of lines and shadows in order to further one's sense of naturalism. The eye sockets are set deep into

I sat on my bed and got comfortable before beginning my meditative practice today. I started off with concentrating on my breathing before reciting my mantra. I felt my body relax. Instead of repeating my mantra in my head using my own voice, I decided to listen to an audio playing of the mantra. I sat on my bed and got comfortable before putting on my ear buds on and playing the mantra. It felt different listening to someone else's voice, however I did enjoy it. I found myself more easily being able to concentrate on the mantra, without having to think about the words. I felt my body relax and I enjoyed the sensation that was running through my bones. Always striving to have high self–esteem leads us to put other people down in the process, it also insinuates that we have to be perfect and better to be worthy, which is the opposite of what Neff's concept of self–compassion entails. However, the strong sense of heroic pride within Beowulf can at times be in direct conflict with these Christian values. Through this juxtaposition, we see the dichotomies of pride vs. humility and sacrifice vs. selfishness. When Beowulf relates his battle with Grendel's mother he acknowledges God as his protector as do others. The leader of the Geats states that he would "gladly trust the force of God's favor" (W.Lit. 922). There is a sense of mystical protection present throughout the story of Beowulf. Yet in the story there is also a strong sense that God's protection must be earned; a warrior must first be true to his values, courage, honesty, pride, and humility and only then will he earn God's protection. In addition to earthly protection, there is also the sense that all earthly good, be it success or wealth, derives from God. God is described as the "Granter of Grace, true Lord of glory" (W.Lit. 967). The true power lies with God. Any delight that a man enjoys here on earth is achieved only through the grace of God. I decided to perform this in a meditative structure with similar goals to my first transformational practice, which was a different form of meditation, and see which provided more benefit or was simply a better fit for me. Decreasing my stress level and reducing work related anxiety were the two primary objectives I was hoping to transform by engaging in this twice a week. Through my personal experience with the mindfulness meditation, a lesson that I learned was that this offered a substantial amount of stress relief. Not particularly attending to thoughts that enter my mind and being mindful of the present, allowed stress from the day to dwindle away. I found the meditation to be particularly effective on high stress days and this was a welcome event when I had a very hectic day at work. Further, I discovered that in my case, this form of meditation was better at removing stress than utilizing a mantra meditative technique. Another lesson learned was that mindfulness meditation did not lessen my work anxiety to any great degree. It may have taken my mind off it during the meditation practice, but I would feel some anxiousness soon afterwards as thoughts of work began to prevail after my earnest focus during meditation came to an end.
