Essay On The Movie Frida
For this reaction paper, I decided to pick the movie that I related to most in the class. Frida is an inspiring, passionate, and informative movie. This
movie tells the biography of Frida Kahlo, who was born in 1907 in the city of Coyoacan, Mexico. The film starts with a horrible accident, when Frida
was 18 she was on a wooden–bodied bus that collided with a streetcar. She was impaled by a metal pole and she faced challenges from the injury for
the rest of her life. I believe that Frida's accident shaped her personality by making her more persistent with everything she does. She never backed
down from a challenge, which created a feminist state of mind around her thoughts. She also gained a great deal of independence and didn't rely on
anyone. Frida didn't follow into the typical gender roles and norms in their society.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this time, women had very specific gender roles throughout society. They had two options as they emerge into adulthood, join the commune or
marry a man who was well–off that could support her. However, Frida didn't aspire to do either, she aspired to have a career as an artist. Due to
Frida's dream, she set out to find a local yet famous artist Diego Riviera to seek approval of her artwork. Throughout Frida's journey and development
as an artist, she beings an adventurous yet dysfunctional relationship with the famous muralist Diego Riviera. Riviera's political battles also correlate
with many of the discussions in our culture Spanish course. Throughout the film, Riviera expressed his views as a communist which shaped his
political views and paintings. His mural at Rockefeller Center was removed due to its communist theme/message. He was fighting for his paintings to
be shown and celebrated among society by representing his

A Journey: Making Art Is A Journey
Intro
For my term 3 year work drawing, I took on the topic of a journey. When deciding on what I was going do, I can across a quote that read "Making
Art is a Journey". I thought of how true that statement was and I wanted to convey that in my own artwork. I knew when doing this artwork I didn't
want to do the typical 'path' imagery but I rather wanted push myself and my level of creativity beyond a point I have never before. The expedition
aspect of title is basically describing the main topic addressed in this essay and is another word for journey. For my year work drawing I decided that I
would do a stippling drawing where I portray a crystal ball that has the Johannesburg skyline.

For Picassos as an artist he had a journey more so in but in his style rather than subject matter. He went from being a formalist to abstractionist to
cubist. My artwork does not have a meaning as deep as Guernica and I found that Picasso's artwork expressed more of an art protest/historic
moment whereas my artworks are based on journeys. Another similarity in our artworks is that for the greater part, there is a use of black and white.
I found differences in that fact that there was weightier subject matter for Guernica. It also has a lot more symbolism than my artwork does, such as
the bull which is depicted with a white head and a shocked face from its horrific surrounding. As well as the light bulb, dead solider, horses, kneeling
women etc. the Guernica is a cubist artwork whereas my artwork is more naturalistic. I do think that Guernica helped my artwork to

Frida Kahlo Editing Techniques
The documentary "Portrait of an Artist" by Frida Kahlo is easily seen as an old film due to the simple editing techniques. Despite this, the film still
accurately portrays the artist's life in the famous "Blue House" outside of Mexico City. She shared this home with her husband Diego Rivera, who was
a famous muralist and painter. Frida Kahlo's full name was Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y CalderГіn de Rivera. She was born in CoyoacГЎn,
Mexico on July 6, 1907. She ended up changed her birth year to 1910 in order to associate herself more with being a product of the Mexican
Revolution. Her father was a Hungarian Jew who immigrated from Germany to Mexico. He married a Mexican woman of both Native and Spanish
descent. As a child Frida would go with her father on his photography assignments and to his studio. All the while she... Show more content on

This is where she met her future husband. Frida married Diego Rivera in 1929 when she was 22 years old and he was 42. They continued to be
residents of Mexico City, because Diego was contracted to do murals in the U.S., yet they lived in San Francisco, Detroit, and New York while he
worked on those commissions. They had a confusing kind of open relationship which could have been the cause of their divorce in 1939. Yet
surprisingly they remarried the following year. Kahlo's life was riddled with tragedy. When she was 7, Frida was diagnosed with polio which left
her with a smaller and thinner leg. At 18 years old Kahlo was in a bus accident. Her lower body was impaled on a metal rod causing her pelvis to
break and her spine in three places. She spent most of her life hospitalized and in bed. During her life she had three miscarriages because of her
injuries. Later in her life she was still haunted by this incident and suffered a gangrenous leg, which was amputated. After this her condition and attitude
got worse which resulted in her death in

Summary Of The Broken Column
At eighteen years old, Frida Kahlo was engaged in a tragic bus accident. From that point, her life was set apart by incessant torment and medical
issues. She required various surgeries which lead to her being physically incapable of carrying a fetus for the full term. The topic of torment penetrates
Kahlo's self–portraits and regularly unequivocally includes their topic. In the picture, Frida's physical and mental battles are rendered noticeable through
bends of her body, which is divided, multiplied, turned inside–out, and merged with non–human components. The Broken Column was painted not long
after Kahlo experienced spinal surgery. She delineates herself bound and compelled by some sort of brace confining her body. A natural hollow of
missing flesh completely defies the uprightness of her body, uncovering a broken column in place of her spine. The column gives off an
impression of being nearly falling into rubble. Metal nails puncture Kahlo's entire body; breast, torso, arms, face and her upper thighs taken cover
behind a swath of fabric. Tears spill down her face. Set in an open scene, Kahlo is exposed in more ways than just one. The landscape on which she
stands seems infertile and severed. Using Freud's three categories Frida suffered threats from her body because she was not physically capable to
carry a baby, she miscarried multiple times and that would be tormenting for any woman to deal with, I feel she expressed that aspect of her life
through the tears she

The Two Frida Kahlo Analysis
Dear Leslie,
I am in the city of Coyoacan, Mexico to visit Frida Kahlo's The Two Fridas, which she painted in oil on canvas in 1939, depicting the era of
Surrealism. Some say that her painting The Two Fridas can be labeled as Surreal because of her sometimes bizarre and disturbing themes. Kahlo was
not interested in subjects that came from her dreams or the subconscious, yet her artwork was almost always autobiographical. This is why this
painting was Surreal. I am currently taking a trip to learn more since you know that one of my favorite artists is Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo has done many
self–portraits for her art work. Since she is a well–known Mexican painter and I have the same heritages it is important for me to know more. This is
why I am traveling to Mexico to learn more. In this piece of art, Kahlo paints a self–portrait to trying to express the way she felt when she after
divorcing from Diego Rivera she wanted to express the pain of her torn hear that Rivera left when they separated and the way she felt at that moment to
trying to find herself. Amazingly, it is not that expensive. The flight, hotel and rental care to get around is about... Show more content on

She died in July 13 in 1954 in the same house she was born. Frida Kahlo was not only identified as a surrealist but she is admired as a feminist icon.
Her paintings were able to transmit her pain throughout her life. Some of her formal education was before entering the National Preparatory School,
since her father Carl Wilhelm Kahlo Kauffmann was a German–Mexican photographer. She became his assistant in his photograph studio in 1910.
Frida Kahlo had a major accident at the age of 18 where she remain confined to her bed and begin to paint. Kahlo's tragedies throughout her life and

The artwork ''Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird' is a self portrait created by Frida Kahlo using oil on canvas. The piece depicts
Kahlo from the shoulders up, facing directly towards the audience with an emotionless facial expression. She is in a tropical environment with a
background consisting primarily of large tropical leaves, in the top right corner you can see the blue sky and some clouds. Kahlo is wearing a plain
white shirt and around her neck there are intertwined thorn branches. One branch is wrapped quite tightly around her neck and you can see some
trickles of blood running down her chest from where the thorns are piercing the skin. Hanging from this branch is a black, lifeless hummingbird, it
appears to be attached... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hummingbird is known as a Mexican symbol of good luck. This piece was clearly painted during a dark time in Kahlo's life, she shows her
hope for renewed love with the bird hanging from her neck. The hummingbird also often symbolises freedom and is imagined to be colourful,
cheerful and hovering above flowers, yet this bird is black and lifeless. This suggest that Kahlo once saw herself as a joyful and bright person who
has been drained by continuous heartbreak and loss. Another element in the piece is the black cat above the subject's right shoulder. Black cats
commonly represent bad luck, this contrasts with the hummingbird, a symbol of good luck. The cat is positioned in a prowling stance, that makes it
look as if it is ready to attack the bird. This alludes to the idea that Kahlo believes she has run out of good luck and it is being overrun by bad

Henry Ford Hospital Analysis
The artwork 'Henry Ford Hospital' is a self–portrait created by Frida Kahlo using oil on metal. The piece consists of Kahlo lying, naked on a hospital
bed, presumably depicting a scene that occurred after her miscarriage in 1932. Kahlo is lying on the bed in a way that makes it appear as if she is
falling off. Although her feet and back are lying flat on the bed, her knees are positioned to the side. The top half of her body is facing towards the
audience whereas the bottom half is facing away. She has an introspective and uncomfortable facial expression with one visible tear running down
her cheek. You can see a large pool of blood on the bed underneath Kahlo as a result of the miscarriage. Written on the side of the bed is 'Henry Ford

Through the use of powerful symbolism Kahlo has very successfully depicted this emotional struggle. The floating objects surrounding the bed that
are being held by Kahlo hold great significance in this composition. The main image that is seen first the male fetus that is positioned directly
above Kahlo. This baby, that is attached to Kahlo by an umbilical cord, represents the child that she had she always wished for. She had stated that
she wanted to have a son with her husband, Diego, and they would call him 'Dieguito'. Kahlo has said that the purple orchid in the bottom of the
composition was a gift from Diego. Orchids were also a symbol of fertility and virility in ancient Greece. The snail in the top right alludes to the slow
and painful process of the miscarriage itself. The harsh metal looking machine in the bottom left corner represents the operation that she had whilst in
hospital and possibly the many other operations that she had following the near fatal accident in 1925. Finally, the fractured pelvis in the lower right
corner represents the injury that she obtained to her pelvis which is what made it impossible for her to give

The painting shows two different personalities, one in traditional Tehuana dress with a broken heart who is sitting next to the other, a modern European
dressed Frida Kahlo. According to Amy Stechler, a director from PBS, she describes the artwork as a, "modern dressed Frida, blood drips onto her
crisp white dress, a possible reminder of her abortions, miscarriages and many surgeries, as well as the physical pain felt at the loss of
Rivera"(Stechler). During her previous years, Kahlo was not able bear a child due to the accident leaving her infertile. In her traditional Mexican
formal wear, Kahlo carries an egg shaped locket of Rivera's picture on her lap along with a long red vein that resembles an umbilical cord. Her
symbolic painting is depicting that she refers to Rivera her lover and her child. When Amy Schaefer writes, "The stormy sky in the background, and the
artist's bleeding heart – a fundamental symbol of Catholicism and also symbolic of Aztec ritual sacrifice – accentuate Kahlo's personal tribulation and
physical pain"(Schaefer). Kahlo began to take more interest in traditional clothings of Mexico. With this portrait, The Two Fridas, Kahlo expresses her
loneliness and desperation of her separation from

Frida Kahlo's The Dream Or El Sueno
Peach fuzz below her nose, unibrow perched upon her lower forehead, and thin, black hair; all of these proponents make up Frida Kahlo's looks,
but do not so easily make up her character and symbolic nature. There is much to be said about Frida Kahlo and her spectacular work. Many people
see Frida not only as a master artist, which she is, but also a strong woman who never let the struggles of her life get in the way of her dreams. Out of
every painting she ever constructed, one of her most captivating paintings was The Dream or El Sueno. This is a beautiful painting where Frida took
advantage of her beautiful and masterful painting style to express many different themes and underlying tones. When it comes to this painting, there is

In contrast with most of Frida's other paintings, this one actually depicts a few actual aspects. The skeleton, for example, is something Frida truly had
on top of her bed; It did not have fireworks attached to it, but rather it was just a life–sized paper mache skeleton named "Juda". Frida often referred to
it as an "amusing reminder of mortality" and she used it for the same reason in this painting. Like previously stated, the skeleton lacks fireworks in
real life. Frida actually puts them in to symbolize the suddenness of death and to emphasize her death was to be celebrated. The vines that envelop
her body are painted to represent not only life, but also rebirth. The woman in the bed is, in fact, Frida and she looked sickly because, at the time
this painting was made, Frida was close to death. Frida, however, does not look sad or mournful, but instead, she looks simply content. The colors
used in this painting are bright and happy, something Frida wanted to use to depict a happy and celebratory mood. Lastly, the bed appears to be
floating in the sky, levitating towards heaven and also showing the expansiveness of life and death, much like the sky is. The author of the article
titled Feel My Pain, Natasha Walters (2005), had this to say about how to interpret Frida's themes, "If we want to read the art as the story of a woman,
we have to be aware that we will never

An Essay On Frida Kahlo
Considered one of Mexico' s greatest artists, Frida Kahlo was a self–portrait artist and is still admired as a feminist icon. She was born on July 6, 1907
in Coyoacan, Mexico City and grew up in the family 's house where was later referred as the Blue House. During her childhood, Frida had poor
health causing her to contract polio at age six and had to be in her bed all the time for nine months, this disease caused her right foot and leg to grow
much thinner than her left extremity. Kahlo began painting after she was severely injured in a bus accident where a steel handrail impaled her through
the hip. She later became politically active and on 1929 she married fellow communist activist, Diego Rivera. In 1938, Frida had a greater exhibition at
a New York City gallery, selling about half of the total paintings shown there. A few years later, she went to live to Paris for an amount of time, there
she exhibited some of her paintings and befriended important artists such as Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso. Her health issues began consuming
her around 1950 even though she continued to paint and support political causes despite her lack of mobility. Deeply depressed, and about a week
after her 47th birthday, Kahlo died on July 13 at her precious Blue House.

Overcoming Obstacles Essay
My life isn't that appealing, I always imagined myself in better position that I am now, maybe living out of state somewhere with a boyfriend who
loves me and a job that could sustain my college tuition. If you would have asked me at the age of eight what I wanted to be when I grew up, I
would have said something on the line of "a Lawyer, Doctor, or even an Astronaut" but no one ever tells you how hard its going to be and how much
debt you'll be in at the age of twenty–five. From childhood to adulthood, everyone chooses a path, where they must overcome obstacles thrown at them.
Obstacles in life make us who where are, they make us learn, and they predict how we will turn out. My obstacles consist of mental, physical, and
social throughout my childhood, adolescence, and adulthood years which made me who I am today.
The Birth of Frida Kahlo Before I was born, my mother had already given birth to two sons and she so desperately wanted a little girl. When they
found out their third and final child was going to be a girl, my mother took great precautions to avoid a miscarriage which my mother was prone
too. I was born on November 28, 1997, I weight nine pounds, two ounces and I had a giant unibrow right on my face, this was an obstacle for me. As a
child, I knew I was different than everyone else so, I covered my eyebrows with my bangs thinking no one would ever see my connected brows. My
parents always told me "if you don't like who you are, then be someone you want to be" for

Frida Kahlo : The Cultural Aspects Of Culture
When seeing someone for the first time, it is quite easy to tell a lot about them. For instance, if their hair is everywhere or their outfit is so remarkable
it looks like it belongs in a Vogue Magazine. People critic things constantly about someone other than themselves, it is what humans do. Though,
Society today sees and judge's things like cultural background rather than one's traits and how they present themselves as a person.
Because of this, children will become accustom to treat others with disrespect and live their lives thinking prejudicially. Which can cause further
damage like racism and discrimination to poison the minds of the new generation. Now, culture is whatever it wants to be such as food, language,
religion, and even location, the list goes on and on. But questioning someone does not always have to be negative. Hayden Herrera, author of the short
story "From Frida, a Biography of Frida Kahlo" states "She dressed...native Mexican costumes...children used to follow her in the streets. "Where's
the circus?" (Herrera 34). Frida Kahlo was a Mexican woman who treasured her origin, typically known for her signature body hair. Come the time
Frida was obligated to move and live in the United States she could not be herself, people looked at her funny. The way she lived was not thought to
be "American like", consequently, causing her to change her name and the way she expresses herself. According to Herrera, "... as a mask to preserve

On the other hand, her body is being held together by a corset that is only made of a few pieces of material. This indicates that she is barley being

Frida Kahlo : The Inner Workings
Frida Kahlo: The Inner Workings Frida Kahlo was an artist who saw things in a new light, but most of all she shows us her life through her artwork.
She shows us the pain she feels, or how she may feel lonely in very few words. Frida Kahlo lived and died in the same place, in the "Blue House" at
247 Londres Street in CoyoacГЎn. Her life was centered on this home, even though she did not live there her entire life she always ended up returning
to the place where it all began. Frida Kahlo was born to Guillermo Kahlo and Matilde CalderГіn y GonzГЎlez on July 6, 1907 in CoyoacГЎn, a small
town outside of Mexico City. Frida's father, Guillermo, was born Carl Wilhelm Kahlo in 1871, in Pforzheim, Germany. At the age of nineteen,
Guillermo immigrated to Mexico from Germany. This is where Guillermo met Frida's mother, Matilde. Kahlo 's parents were married soon after the
death of Guillermo 's first wife, which occurred during the birth of her second child. Although their marriage was quite unhappy, Guillermo and Matilde
had four daughters; Kahlo was the third. She had two older half–sisters who were raised in the same household. Kahlo had a difficult relationship with
her mother, who was domineering and depressive, but her relationship with her father was affectionate. On September 17, 1925, Kahlo was riding in a
bus that collided with a trolley car. She suffered serious injuries as a result of the accident, including a broken spinal column, a broken collarbone,

Frida Kahlo Self-Portrait With Monkey Essay
Self–Portrait with Monkey: By Frida Kahlo
Self–Portrait with Monkey made in the year of 1938 by Frida kahlo a Mexican artist who was influence by the traumatized events that occur during
her early life. Which were physical and psychological tragic. Frida khalo used her personal tragic to create art and which her saying was that she paint
herself because it was what she knew best. Kahlos work was influence by tragic event in which in her portrait Self–Portrait with Monkey, it was made
to show a living and soulful being holding her by having his arm around her neck of a form of protection and who she describe the pet to be a like a

Her posing is of someone who seems lonely, incomplete and unsatisfied. The portrait is the appearance more of a tomboy. We can see the background
of the painting showing the a form of a jungle with different hairy leaves and cactus. The painting has different textures, lines, and colors. We can see
a light green mixture with yellow and with some blue, green, and light gray, also the cantus is painted in light gray with a white and slightly brown as
it seems from viewing the painting. The natural objects used by Frida Kahlo in most of her portrait, are the natural element as we can see in the Self
Portrait with a Monkey. She is wearing a collar and it seems to be made of bamboo material. In the portrait with seeing a Monkey is facing forward
and how the monkey has his arm around her with so much care and protection. The monkey reflects an innocent child holding on his mother,
reflecting the viewers that he is love and that he feels security by her as his main protection. Her painting is more of a personal portrait. The colors of
use are vibrant colors, but even though her colors used were not as dark, her self–portrait seems more with a sad appearance. I think in her life, there
has been always an empty hole. Possibly reason were the inability to bear children and her unstable relationship with Diego Rivera. To Frida Kahlo,
he was considered to be her soul mate, friend and her tutor in painting. Her emptiness was the need be a woman in every sense of the word. Which is
married, have children, and be hundred percent in love and to be love with your partner. I just think this is how she used to feel. Her paintings were
most self–portraits, which it shows that she was sad and unhappy. The painting her facial expression is of someone that is lonely and depressed. To
Frida Kahlo, her only time of distraction from the pain and the loneliness was painting. Her only distraction and

Compare And Contrast Frida Kahlo And Lana Del Rey
Frida Kahlo and Lana Del Rey are two different women with two different art forms. Lana a singer who writes songs about her life's experiences
with love, heartbreak, and tragedy while using videography to tell stories influenced not only by her life but pop culture references to give her
audience a better feel of the emotions she's trying to convey. While Frida a painter and writer who was influenced by her own reality, physical pain,
emotions, body, mind, and love. Used her life experiences to paint about tragic events such as miscarriages and being cheated on. Though they use art

Frida Kahlo was in love with her mentor Diego Rivera but after they married each other Rivera was unfaithful to Kahlo. She then went on to cheat
on him with every women he would sleep with and also other men. Their love seemed torturous but Frida never stopped loving him. She viewed
Diego as more than a man but as an idea of everything perfect. Lana who has written song after song album after album about some great love she
claims she will never get over is captivating to her listeners. In her song Ultraviolence Lana sings "loving him was never enough" I feel as if that
lyrics perfectly describes not only Lana's great love but also Frida's. Another thing you cannot ignore with the two is that though they use art in
different ways of expression they both use their life experiences to convey emotions that their audiences heavily relate to. This is why they both have
such widespread popularity. Kahlo has a legacy that will last forever and Lana will have one too if she continues to be such an honest artist like
Kahlo. They are both strong women and that is obvious in their art forms, this is why they are more similar to each other than different because they
both use their art to be as honest as possible on subjects that are import to them but also to their audiences making them both very relatable

Frida Kahlo Y Calderon
in the outskirts of Mexico City, in the small town of CoyoacГ n the Blue House (La Casa Azul) had been built by Wilhelm Kahlo. In this house,
Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon, or as she is simply known by the name Frida Kahlo, was born on July 6, 1907.
Frida's father had great faith for Frida and was determined to see that she got the best education possible. As she began her studies, Frida excelled on
all her subjects at the school.
In September of the year 1925, Frida was in her senior year and looked forward to her graduation and was making plans to attend medical school.

In spite of the fact that her mother did not wish for Frida to see Diego due to their age differences (he was 20 years older) and their strange appearances
together (Frida was 5' 3" tall and Diego was 6'), they were married in a Catholic ceremony in 1929.
Melancholia, illness, divorce, and re–marriage brewed their relationship; Diego Rivera was known to be a ladies' charmer thus leading their marriage
into a storm.
When Diego and Frida divorced in the year of 1940, Frida turned to heavy drinking, chain–smoking, and a steady diet of candy. This affected her quite
dangerously as she developed an atrophic ulcer on her right foot, from which several gangrenous toes were amputated (or dismembered).
Frida and Diego Rivera reconciled and were re–married on his 54th birthday, in December 1940, in San Francisco, California. Following the
amputation of her right leg in 1953, Frida became a recluse and more deeply depressed, finally losing the will to live. She was found dead at home in

What do you do without either of your arms? What do you do for a living constrained to a wheelchair? What do you do without control over your
own body? Many people in the world today spend their lives wishing things were not as they were, attempting to forget how they are, or trying to
change how they are going to be. When "disabled" people succeed, it is commonly thought that those individuals are amazing for overcoming their
disabilities and thriving in life. Is this really what they are doing? The following three women, Mary Duffy, Frieda Kahlo, and Vassar Miller transform

As Rosemarie Garland Thomson states, "Disability performance art is a genre of self–representation, a form of autobiography, that merges the visual
with the narrative." (Thomson 1). Duffy, an Irishwoman, is armless and has a delicate hand attached directly to one shoulder. She is a survivor of the
effects of the Thalidomide drug. This drug was introduced in West Germany in 1956. The Thalidomide drug was used to treat nausea and vomiting
associated with pregnancy, in addition to its uses as a sedative and hypnotic. It was not until 1961 that the drug was taken off the market, being
identified as a human teratogen. More than 10,000 infants worldwide were born with malformations attributed to this drug, specifically malformations
in the upper extremities.
Mary Duffy uses the "stare and tell" method in her performances. Duffy uses this method by exposing her body in the nude, a body that has always
been hidden, and therefore summoning the stare. "By presenting her body to the viewer, the visibly disabled performance artist generates the dynamic
of staring, the arrested attentiveness that registers difference on the part of the viewer." (Thomson 1). By calling upon the stare, the artist forces the
audience to create and contemplate the question of "What happened to you?". Therefore Mary Duffy incorporates narrative into her performance as
well. She is then able to address issues, answer questions, and challenge commonly misinterpreted questions with her own thoughts and

Frida Kahlo And Pablo Picasso Essay
Introduction:
Throughout history artists have always practiced the art of portraiture. In particular, although Frida Kahlo and Pablo Picasso came from different times
in history and cultural backgrounds, they both explored portraiture as a way of making art.
Frida Kahlo:
Frida Kahlo was born in July 1907 in the Mexico City suburb of Coyoacan. Kahlo was one of five daughters of a Hungarian–Jewish father and a
Spanish and Mexican mother. Kahlo wanted to be born in 1910 because it was the year of the outbreak of the Mexican revolution. Specifically, she
wanted her life to start within the modern Mexico.
Frida's artworks represents her way through life and all the struggles/hurdles she came across, the self–portrait she painted with the thorn necklace and
the hummingbird, these are key examples of how Kahlo uses symbolism. Frida had once said about herself that " they thought i was surrealist, but i
wasn't. i never painted dreams. i painted my own reality." referring back to this quote the reason why Frida put so many symbolic creatures/images
was because she used elements to express her feelings, not to paint a ' realistic scene'. Kahlo spent her life in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

was diagnosed with polio that set her back from a lot of childhood activities. In her teen years, she enrolled in a preparatory school and met her future
husband and famous muralist, Diego rivera. A few years later Kahlo was in a nearly fatal bus accident that led to being bedridden for years. She began to

The Subjects of Frida Kahlo Unlike Diego Rivera, her once–husband, Frida Kahlo painted emotions into her works. She used color and imagery as
manifestations for her thoughts and feelings. Her subjects were more than subjects, for they spoke the story of her life of suffering. Things were not
merely the things they appeared to be, for they represented emotion that even words cannot convey. Using the subjects of nature, man–made objects,
and barren landscapes–reoccurring subjects in her paintings– Kahlo can convey emotions of hopes of fertility, pain, and despair. A bowl of fruits has
long been understood to be the symbol of fertility in art through time, but Kahlo has painted that and so much more. Although this is an analytical

Frida Kahlo was born in a small town outside Mexico City named CoyoacГЎn. Unlike most women, the movie starts out by explaining how different
Frida was when she was younger. She would wear men's clothes, cut her hair short, and wouldn't traditionally act how Mexican women did during that
time. After a tragic accident that left her in bed for months she picked up the habit of painting. She painted anything and everything,

Frida Kahlo And The Mexican Community
Frida Kahlo once said"At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can." There is no better person to say this than Kahlo, whose
life was filled with pain and sadness. She was one of the most influential artists of her time, especially in the Mexican community.. The most important
aspects of her life were her multicultural background, her tragic accident she survived as a teen, her relationship with Diego Rivera, her death, and her
face as a product.
Frida Kahlo was born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y CalderГіn, July 6th, 1907, in Coyoacan, Mexico. Her mother, Matilde Calderon y Gonzalez,
was of indigenous and Spanish descent. Her father, Wilhelm Kahlo, was German. The combinations of the two heritages gave Frida a rich cultural
background, which was a key part of her artwork. Kahlo developed polio at the young age of 6, which left one of her legs thinner and weaker than
the other one. It is also speculated that she may have had spina bifida, which would also hinder the growth of her leg. Although she suffered from
these afflictions, her father encouraged her to be active and participate in sports, such as swimming, wrestling and boxing. It would be September
17, 1925, that Kahlo 's life would be changed forever. It was a normal day, and Kahlo had been out shopping with her boyfriend, Alex Gomez Arias.

The Importance Of Cultural Identity
"We all have unique identities that we develop within our cultures, but these identities are not fixed or static" (Trumbull and Pacheco 8). People should
examine their culture to have a better understanding of how it affects their identity and perceptions. In order to understand one's cultural identity, he or
she need to understand what the term means. According to one source, cultural identity can be defined as, "These different experiences and the new
values, beliefs, and ideas they produce contribute to the dynamic nature of cultures" (Trumbull and Pacheco 10). Considering this definition, I realize
that my cultural identity can be best represented by ethnicity because it expresses my individuality as a person. Various aspects of a person's life that
may determine his or her cultural identity includes ethnicity, language, art, location, food, traditions, and history. After analyzing several texts, the
reader recognizes that three important elements of a person's cultural identity include ethnicity, location, and food. An important element of a person's
cultural identity is ethnicity. A person's ethnicity has an impact on how they live in the world. "Drafting memos in smooth English, able to order in

Returning back to the topic of Frida's garments, Frida expresses symbolism with colour within the two Frida's "Figure1" as the Frida on the right
wearing the Mexican garment depicts a cobalt blue blouse and as she wrote in her dairy that cobalt blue in her paintings means love, purity and

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who did self–portraits and is considered a feminist icon. She is one of the most important female artists of the

she painted herself with one eyebrow and a wispy moustache. I thought to myself "amazing!" A rich looking woman sporting a monobrow and
moustache! I was stunned and intrigued. I thought to myself, she must be an interesting person to have such things and live in the early 1900s. And

Art And Art : Means And Influence Of Art
Culture influences art in several ways. Art is not just limited to dipping a paint brush into paint and creating a masterpiece or even using charcoal to
create a sketch that later creates a beautiful drawing. Fashion, poetry, theater, and even music are all part of art as well as Culinary Arts hints the name.
Even though there are different kinds of art, culture is impacting them in similar ways or sometimes in different ways depending on the type of art.
It is vital to know the importance and meaning of culture. Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a specific group of people. With that being
said culture has a huge influence on anything and everything from the way we speak, dress, or behave. It even influences the way we sit to eat
meals, the way we greet and say our farewells to people. As well as our morals and last but not least art.
Paintings and drawings are a mirror image of culture. When a painting is created the surroundings or state the society is in at the time could have
affected the artist which would lead to the reason or motive of why the piece of art was created. For example, Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who
had painted the painting Four Inhabitants of Mexico City in 1938. This painting features a tiny child that is an Indian girl who is beside characters
that were based on artifacts owned by the Rivera's. The Rivera's were Frida Kahlo's family being that her full name was Frida Kahlo de Rivera. The

The Work of Frida Kahlo Essay
The work of Frida Kahlo often labeled and defined as feminist art continues to describe and establish what feminist art is. Wife of the well known and
highly regarded Diego Rivera, Frida struggled to become an artist in her own right. Her extremely passionate love for and devotion to her husband
manifested itself in an unusual manner in their already unconventional and unique marriage. However it is partly this obsession with Diego that helped
motivate her own success as a feminist artist. Her passionate political and revolutionary spirit resonates in the subjects of her paintings as she herself

She presents herself as proud, dignified, confident and as always, extremely desirable and irresistible.
Reserved, poised and confident, Frida demands immediate attention and respect from her audience as she stands with purpose on a hardwood stage,
curtains drawn held back by thick yet elegant rope. Her peach colored skirt with elegant embroidered flowers and the saturated, deep red blouse
peaking from under an astonishing golden yellow shawl which drapes over the entire costume all indicate a distinguished, colonial member of the
bourgeois high society. The rich red and golden hues of her clothing are complemented and emphasized by the palate of color Frida has chosen for her
background which resonates from a deep green to a golden sun–like tone. She has replaced her usual and typical exuberant and bright native dress with
a more refined version of the characteristic long skirt and jewelry to decorate herself. The aristocratic Frida reinforces her intended highly
distinguished image with the intricately woven red ribbon in her impetuously braided hair which is further complemented by the purple flower
carefully tucked into her braid. The hair with the ribbon and flower is indicative of indigenous heritage and culture, neither which ever to be excluded

Essay On The Movie Frida

  • 1. Essay On The Movie Frida For this reaction paper, I decided to pick the movie that I related to most in the class. Frida is an inspiring, passionate, and informative movie. This movie tells the biography of Frida Kahlo, who was born in 1907 in the city of Coyoacan, Mexico. The film starts with a horrible accident, when Frida was 18 she was on a wooden–bodied bus that collided with a streetcar. She was impaled by a metal pole and she faced challenges from the injury for the rest of her life. I believe that Frida's accident shaped her personality by making her more persistent with everything she does. She never backed down from a challenge, which created a feminist state of mind around her thoughts. She also gained a great deal of independence and didn't rely on anyone. Frida didn't follow into the typical gender roles and norms in their society.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this time, women had very specific gender roles throughout society. They had two options as they emerge into adulthood, join the commune or marry a man who was well–off that could support her. However, Frida didn't aspire to do either, she aspired to have a career as an artist. Due to Frida's dream, she set out to find a local yet famous artist Diego Riviera to seek approval of her artwork. Throughout Frida's journey and development as an artist, she beings an adventurous yet dysfunctional relationship with the famous muralist Diego Riviera. Riviera's political battles also correlate with many of the discussions in our culture Spanish course. Throughout the film, Riviera expressed his views as a communist which shaped his political views and paintings. His mural at Rockefeller Center was removed due to its communist theme/message. He was fighting for his paintings to be shown and celebrated among society by representing his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. A Journey: Making Art Is A Journey Intro For my term 3 year work drawing, I took on the topic of a journey. When deciding on what I was going do, I can across a quote that read "Making Art is a Journey". I thought of how true that statement was and I wanted to convey that in my own artwork. I knew when doing this artwork I didn't want to do the typical 'path' imagery but I rather wanted push myself and my level of creativity beyond a point I have never before. The expedition aspect of title is basically describing the main topic addressed in this essay and is another word for journey. For my year work drawing I decided that I would do a stippling drawing where I portray a crystal ball that has the Johannesburg skyline. My artworks I shall start off with my own artwork (Image A: Page 6). My artwork conveys a crystal globe with the Johannesburg skyline... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For Picassos as an artist he had a journey more so in but in his style rather than subject matter. He went from being a formalist to abstractionist to cubist. My artwork does not have a meaning as deep as Guernica and I found that Picasso's artwork expressed more of an art protest/historic moment whereas my artworks are based on journeys. Another similarity in our artworks is that for the greater part, there is a use of black and white. I found differences in that fact that there was weightier subject matter for Guernica. It also has a lot more symbolism than my artwork does, such as the bull which is depicted with a white head and a shocked face from its horrific surrounding. As well as the light bulb, dead solider, horses, kneeling women etc. the Guernica is a cubist artwork whereas my artwork is more naturalistic. I do think that Guernica helped my artwork to ... • 3. Frida Kahlo Editing Techniques The documentary "Portrait of an Artist" by Frida Kahlo is easily seen as an old film due to the simple editing techniques. Despite this, the film still accurately portrays the artist's life in the famous "Blue House" outside of Mexico City. She shared this home with her husband Diego Rivera, who was a famous muralist and painter. Frida Kahlo's full name was Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y CalderГіn de Rivera. She was born in CoyoacГЎn, Mexico on July 6, 1907. She ended up changed her birth year to 1910 in order to associate herself more with being a product of the Mexican Revolution. Her father was a Hungarian Jew who immigrated from Germany to Mexico. He married a Mexican woman of both Native and Spanish descent. As a child Frida would go with her father on his photography assignments and to his studio. All the while she... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is where she met her future husband. Frida married Diego Rivera in 1929 when she was 22 years old and he was 42. They continued to be residents of Mexico City, because Diego was contracted to do murals in the U.S., yet they lived in San Francisco, Detroit, and New York while he worked on those commissions. They had a confusing kind of open relationship which could have been the cause of their divorce in 1939. Yet surprisingly they remarried the following year. Kahlo's life was riddled with tragedy. When she was 7, Frida was diagnosed with polio which left her with a smaller and thinner leg. At 18 years old Kahlo was in a bus accident. Her lower body was impaled on a metal rod causing her pelvis to break and her spine in three places. She spent most of her life hospitalized and in bed. During her life she had three miscarriages because of her injuries. Later in her life she was still haunted by this incident and suffered a gangrenous leg, which was amputated. After this her condition and attitude got worse which resulted in her death in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Summary Of The Broken Column At eighteen years old, Frida Kahlo was engaged in a tragic bus accident. From that point, her life was set apart by incessant torment and medical issues. She required various surgeries which lead to her being physically incapable of carrying a fetus for the full term. The topic of torment penetrates Kahlo's self–portraits and regularly unequivocally includes their topic. In the picture, Frida's physical and mental battles are rendered noticeable through bends of her body, which is divided, multiplied, turned inside–out, and merged with non–human components. The Broken Column was painted not long after Kahlo experienced spinal surgery. She delineates herself bound and compelled by some sort of brace confining her body. A natural hollow of missing flesh completely defies the uprightness of her body, uncovering a broken column in place of her spine. The column gives off an impression of being nearly falling into rubble. Metal nails puncture Kahlo's entire body; breast, torso, arms, face and her upper thighs taken cover behind a swath of fabric. Tears spill down her face. Set in an open scene, Kahlo is exposed in more ways than just one. The landscape on which she stands seems infertile and severed. Using Freud's three categories Frida suffered threats from her body because she was not physically capable to carry a baby, she miscarried multiple times and that would be tormenting for any woman to deal with, I feel she expressed that aspect of her life through the tears she ... • 5. The Two Frida Kahlo Analysis Dear Leslie, I am in the city of Coyoacan, Mexico to visit Frida Kahlo's The Two Fridas, which she painted in oil on canvas in 1939, depicting the era of Surrealism. Some say that her painting The Two Fridas can be labeled as Surreal because of her sometimes bizarre and disturbing themes. Kahlo was not interested in subjects that came from her dreams or the subconscious, yet her artwork was almost always autobiographical. This is why this painting was Surreal. I am currently taking a trip to learn more since you know that one of my favorite artists is Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo has done many self–portraits for her art work. Since she is a well–known Mexican painter and I have the same heritages it is important for me to know more. This is why I am traveling to Mexico to learn more. In this piece of art, Kahlo paints a self–portrait to trying to express the way she felt when she after divorcing from Diego Rivera she wanted to express the pain of her torn hear that Rivera left when they separated and the way she felt at that moment to trying to find herself. Amazingly, it is not that expensive. The flight, hotel and rental care to get around is about... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She died in July 13 in 1954 in the same house she was born. • 6. Frida Kahlo The artwork ''Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird' is a self portrait created by Frida Kahlo using oil on canvas. The piece depicts Kahlo from the shoulders up, facing directly towards the audience with an emotionless facial expression. She is in a tropical environment with a background consisting primarily of large tropical leaves, in the top right corner you can see the blue sky and some clouds. Kahlo is wearing a plain white shirt and around her neck there are intertwined thorn branches. One branch is wrapped quite tightly around her neck and you can see some trickles of blood running down her chest from where the thorns are piercing the skin. Hanging from this branch is a black, lifeless hummingbird, it appears to be attached... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The hummingbird is known as a Mexican symbol of good luck. This piece was clearly painted during a dark time in Kahlo's life, she shows her hope for renewed love with the bird hanging from her neck. The hummingbird also often symbolises freedom and is imagined to be colourful, cheerful and hovering above flowers, yet this bird is black and lifeless. This suggest that Kahlo once saw herself as a joyful and bright person who has been drained by continuous heartbreak and loss. Another element in the piece is the black cat above the subject's right shoulder. Black cats commonly represent bad luck, this contrasts with the hummingbird, a symbol of good luck. The cat is positioned in a prowling stance, that makes it look as if it is ready to attack the bird. This alludes to the idea that Kahlo believes she has run out of good luck and it is being overrun by bad ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Henry Ford Hospital Analysis The artwork 'Henry Ford Hospital' is a self–portrait created by Frida Kahlo using oil on metal. The piece consists of Kahlo lying, naked on a hospital bed, presumably depicting a scene that occurred after her miscarriage in 1932. Kahlo is lying on the bed in a way that makes it appear as if she is falling off. Although her feet and back are lying flat on the bed, her knees are positioned to the side. The top half of her body is facing towards the audience whereas the bottom half is facing away. She has an introspective and uncomfortable facial expression with one visible tear running down her cheek. You can see a large pool of blood on the bed underneath Kahlo as a result of the miscarriage. Written on the side of the bed is 'Henry Ford Hospital... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through the use of powerful symbolism Kahlo has very successfully depicted this emotional struggle. The floating objects surrounding the bed that are being held by Kahlo hold great significance in this composition. This baby, that is attached to Kahlo by an umbilical cord, represents the child that she had she always wished for. She had stated that she wanted to have a son with her husband, Diego, and they would call him 'Dieguito'. Kahlo has said that the purple orchid in the bottom of the composition was a gift from Diego. Orchids were also a symbol of fertility and virility in ancient Greece. The snail in the top right alludes to the slow and painful process of the miscarriage itself. The harsh metal looking machine in the bottom left corner represents the operation that she had whilst in hospital and possibly the many other operations that she had following the near fatal accident in 1925. Finally, the fractured pelvis in the lower right corner represents the injury that she obtained to her pelvis which is what made it impossible for her to give ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Kahlo was born in Coyoacan, Mexico, July 6, 1907. She spent 47 years of unfortunate events before succumbing to injuries. At the young age of six, Kahlo was diagnosed with polio during the time it was an epidemic, leaving her right leg shorter and thinner than her other. She was encountered with a freak accident at the age of 18, completely changing her life. The accident left her infertile and constantly in pain. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The painting shows two different personalities, one in traditional Tehuana dress with a broken heart who is sitting next to the other, a modern European dressed Frida Kahlo. According to Amy Stechler, a director from PBS, she describes the artwork as a, "modern dressed Frida, blood drips onto her crisp white dress, a possible reminder of her abortions, miscarriages and many surgeries, as well as the physical pain felt at the loss of Rivera"(Stechler). During her previous years, Kahlo was not able bear a child due to the accident leaving her infertile. In her traditional Mexican formal wear, Kahlo carries an egg shaped locket of Rivera's picture on her lap along with a long red vein that resembles an umbilical cord. Her symbolic painting is depicting that she refers to Rivera her lover and her child. When Amy Schaefer writes, "The stormy sky in the background, and the artist's bleeding heart – a fundamental symbol of Catholicism and also symbolic of Aztec ritual sacrifice – accentuate Kahlo's personal tribulation and physical pain"(Schaefer). Kahlo began to take more interest in traditional clothings of Mexico. With this portrait, The Two Fridas, Kahlo expresses her loneliness and desperation of her separation from ... • 10. Frida Kahlo's The Dream Or El Sueno Peach fuzz below her nose, unibrow perched upon her lower forehead, and thin, black hair; all of these proponents make up Frida Kahlo's looks, but do not so easily make up her character and symbolic nature. There is much to be said about Frida Kahlo and her spectacular work. Many people see Frida not only as a master artist, which she is, but also a strong woman who never let the struggles of her life get in the way of her dreams. Out of every painting she ever constructed, one of her most captivating paintings was The Dream or El Sueno. This is a beautiful painting where Frida took advantage of her beautiful and masterful painting style to express many different themes and underlying tones. When it comes to this painting, there is a lot to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast with most of Frida's other paintings, this one actually depicts a few actual aspects. The skeleton, for example, is something Frida truly had on top of her bed; It did not have fireworks attached to it, but rather it was just a life–sized paper mache skeleton named "Juda". Frida often referred to it as an "amusing reminder of mortality" and she used it for the same reason in this painting. Like previously stated, the skeleton lacks fireworks in real life. Frida actually puts them in to symbolize the suddenness of death and to emphasize her death was to be celebrated. The vines that envelop her body are painted to represent not only life, but also rebirth. The woman in the bed is, in fact, Frida and she looked sickly because, at the time this painting was made, Frida was close to death. Frida, however, does not look sad or mournful, but instead, she looks simply content. The colors used in this painting are bright and happy, something Frida wanted to use to depict a happy and celebratory mood. Lastly, the bed appears to be floating in the sky, levitating towards heaven and also showing the expansiveness of life and death, much like the sky is. The author of the article titled Feel My Pain, Natasha Walters (2005), had this to say about how to interpret Frida's themes, "If we want to read the art as the story of a woman, we have to be aware that we will never ... • 11. An Essay On Frida Kahlo Considered one of Mexico' s greatest artists, Frida Kahlo was a self–portrait artist and is still admired as a feminist icon. She was born on July 6, 1907 in Coyoacan, Mexico City and grew up in the family 's house where was later referred as the Blue House. During her childhood, Frida had poor health causing her to contract polio at age six and had to be in her bed all the time for nine months, this disease caused her right foot and leg to grow much thinner than her left extremity. Kahlo began painting after she was severely injured in a bus accident where a steel handrail impaled her through the hip. She later became politically active and on 1929 she married fellow communist activist, Diego Rivera. In 1938, Frida had a greater exhibition at a New York City gallery, selling about half of the total paintings shown there. A few years later, she went to live to Paris for an amount of time, there she exhibited some of her paintings and befriended important artists such as Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso. Her health issues began consuming her around 1950 even though she continued to paint and support political causes despite her lack of mobility. Deeply depressed, and about a week after her 47th birthday, Kahlo died on July 13 at her precious Blue House. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Overcoming Obstacles Essay My life isn't that appealing, I always imagined myself in better position that I am now, maybe living out of state somewhere with a boyfriend who loves me and a job that could sustain my college tuition. If you would have asked me at the age of eight what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have said something on the line of "a Lawyer, Doctor, or even an Astronaut" but no one ever tells you how hard its going to be and how much debt you'll be in at the age of twenty–five. From childhood to adulthood, everyone chooses a path, where they must overcome obstacles thrown at them. Obstacles in life make us who where are, they make us learn, and they predict how we will turn out. My obstacles consist of mental, physical, and social throughout my childhood, adolescence, and adulthood years which made me who I am today. The Birth of Frida Kahlo Before I was born, my mother had already given birth to two sons and she so desperately wanted a little girl. When they found out their third and final child was going to be a girl, my mother took great precautions to avoid a miscarriage which my mother was prone too. "By presenting her body to the viewer, the visibly disabled performance artist generates the dynamic of staring, the arrested attentiveness that registers difference on the part of the viewer." (Thomson 1). By calling upon the stare, the artist forces the audience to create and contemplate the question of "What happened to you?". I thought to myself "amazing!" A rich looking woman sporting a monobrow and moustache! I was stunned and intrigued. I thought to myself, she must be an interesting person to have such things and live in the early 1900s. And thus, I found my topic for Art Appreciation. Frida didn't have any formal training but she developed her artistic skills and later would influence people and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wife of the well known and highly regarded Diego Rivera, Frida struggled to become an artist in her own right. Reserved, poised and confident, Frida demands immediate attention and respect from her audience as she stands with purpose on a hardwood stage, curtains drawn held back by thick yet elegant rope. Her peach colored skirt with elegant embroidered flowers and the saturated, deep red blouse peaking from under an astonishing golden yellow shawl which drapes over the entire costume all indicate a distinguished, colonial member of the bourgeois high society. The rich red and golden hues of her clothing are complemented and emphasized by the palate of color Frida has chosen for her background which resonates from a deep green to a golden sun–like tone. She has replaced her usual and typical exuberant and bright native dress with a more refined version of the characteristic long skirt and jewelry to decorate herself. The aristocratic Frida reinforces her intended highly distinguished image with the intricately woven red ribbon in her impetuously braided hair which is further complemented by the purple flower carefully tucked into her braid. The hair with the ribbon and flower is indicative of indigenous heritage and culture, neither which ever to be excluded or denied by Kahlo. The brazen carnality of the many self portraits that wold soon follow in a burst of creativity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
