1. Analysing my Music
Magazine Questionnaire
To find out more about the kind of personality that my audience
had when coming to music magazines, I set up a questionnaire
which was answered by people within my own age range of 17+
years. This helped to develop my understanding of what kind of
people do purchase magazines, why they do so and what they
prefer the most when they are purchasing a music magazine.

2. By asking my audience what sex they are it gave me a broad understanding of who
bought magazines and the type of magazines these were going to be.
Stereotypically, if the majority was male then they were most likely to be Indie music
magazines, or Rock. Similarly, if the majority of the people that answered this
question was female then it would be understandable that the rest of the questions
would be orientated around Pop music and possibly R&B. As most of the people who
answered this question are male, I expect that the rest of the questions will be
orientated around more Indie genre of music types and when I am making my
magazine I will take into account things that will appeal to the male sex rather than
the female. However, by adding little things that would appeal to the female
audience will help to widen my audience number.
3. Next, I asked my audience their age. By getting an understanding of what age my
audience were it would help me when planning for my magazine and to know what
kind of things are orientated and suited for the lifestyle of my audience by their age.
As most of the people that answered this question 17 years old or younger, I gather
that they are all teenagers and therefore this will help me with the making of my
magazine as the subheadings and offers will have to be suitable and appealing to the
teenage audience.
4. Afterwards, I asked what genre of music that the person answering liked the most.
This goes against my first instinct of thinking that as most males answered the
questionnaire that the answer to this question would most likely be Indie and Rock
because as you can see Pop got the majority of the vote on this question. This goes
against my general plan of what I wanted my magazine to be like. However, this has
widened my knowledge on my first, typical stereotypical view.
5. Onwards, I asked whether my audience had ever purchased a music magazine. The
majority of the people that answered this question said ‘Yes’ and this therefore
shows that music magazines are popular and are purchased by a lot of people in the
teenage age range. This also shows that my audience will be interested in
purchasing/reading my magazine as it is music based.
6. After that, I asked how regularly they purchased a music magazine and which the
majority of the people answered annually. This suggests that when making my
magazine I should make it so that it is published yearly, or make it cheaper so that
people are more interested in purchasing the magazine more regularly.
7. Additionally, I asked where they would be most likely to obtain a music magazine.
Most of the people that answered this question said that they were most likely to
purchase a music magazine at their local supermarket. This helps me with the
publishing and selling of my music magazine as now I know that it needs to be sold in
a supermarket for my audience to be aware of it and able to buy it easily and that my
music magazine also needs to be suitable to be on a supermarket shelf.
8. By then asking my audience how they would best describe the type of clothing that they wear
gave me an idea of what type of people would be their role model and what would capture
their eye if it was seen on the front of a music magazine. Also, by knowing the type of
clothing that my audience wear this suggests the type of genre that their music taste may fit
in to and also what kind of stereotypical group they could fit in to. By knowing a stereotypical
group that they could fit into this helps with finding other famous artists that would also fit in
that category too and would therefore appeal to my audience.
9. Next, I asked my audience what their favourite colour was. By knowing my audience’s
preferred colour choice this gives me an idea of the type of colour palette on the
front of a magazine would appeal to them. As most of the people that answered this
question said ‘Black’ this suggests that they are interested in music magazines that
are set out like Indie magazines or Rock like NME and magazines similar to that.
10. By knowing what makes my audience buy the magazine the most it helps me to
know what will be expected from my magazine. As the majority of the people
answered with ‘Music Idol on front cover’ this means that the main shot on the
front of my music magazine needs to be a band/artist that looks successful and
confident so that it is appealing to my audience.
11. By asking my audience their ethnicity, this increases my knowledge on what slang
words they would understand if there was to be any within or on the front of my
music magazine. Also, this gives me an idea of what kind of music they will listen to
eg. British artists and most likely Americans, by knowing this I know the kind of
people that these artists are and therefore when shooting my photographs I know
what I need my people to look like and the message/attitude that they need to give
to the audience.
