History of Horse Meat Consumption The ancient Botai culture in Kazakhstan first domesticated
horses 5,500 years ago, and its economy was equine–based. Horses were used for labor,
transportation, milk, and consumption. Even at that early time, if the horses did not succumb to the
rigors of daily life, work–related injuries, or battle, then they were sold for salvage. The money
received from the salvage was reinvested in a younger, stronger horse. The salvaged horse would go
to the rendering plant for leather, horsehair furniture, glue, gelatin, cosmetics, or to the butcher ...

The closing of the last plant in the USA in 2007 caused thousands of horses to be sent to Mexico and
Canada. The US Senate has passed a resolution and is urging the House of Representatives to offer
incentives to open horse processing plants in the United States. Senators say it is cruel to force old
or lame horses to wait for natural death.
Former Missouri State Senator Matt Bartle, a Republican, stated, "The unintended consequences
have been disastrous for horses. We now have horses all over the state that are skin and bones that
are suffering tremendously. Some people actually enjoy the taste of horse meat. It feeds dogs. It
feeds other animals."
Former Missouri State Senator Frank Barnitz, a Democrat, stated "People need to realize that horses
are not pets; horses are livestock."
The Argument for Horse Slaughterhouses I am the daughter of a livestock dealer. My father was an
amazing wrangler and rancher. Throughout my life, we have bought and sold many horses––too
many to count, and I have also sent my own fair share to the slaughter plants. As a young teen I had
a horse we called Whino, he was a great horse for me when I was learning to ride and wanting to
follow Dad around. There comes a time in a horse's life when they are not capable of doing what
they once were or that they become sore or crippled to lead a life with meaning or comfort. I was
raised to understand life and death and that one will follow the other. I knew when we had

Horse Slaughter Grady
To the untrained human eye, a horse may look like just an animal with a brain, a heart and four legs,
but to an equestrian a horse is so much more than just a horse. A horse is an equestrian's teacher and
most importantly a partner. Behind each combination of horse and rider is an untold story of hard
work and an unbreakable bond no one can sever. That is why my rescue horse, Grady, is my most
treasured object.
It was the day after Christmas of 2011, my dad and I were driving out to the horse barn I had ridden
at for a few years. My trainer had just bought a horse from a horse trader and we were off to see if
this horse was the one I would make memories with. Of course every nine year old, like myself at
the time, thinks that the "one" is every horse they ever see. I walked down to the barn and noticed in
the first stall nearest to the door, was the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first glance, you would have thought Grady was healthy and happy, but underneath his blanket
was another story waiting to be told. Grady was not at all healthy, he was suffering from a bad bout
of malnutrition and of course the abuse he received in the pasture at his old barn. On that day, I had
been told not to get attached to Grady because my trainer worried he would not survive the winter.
Well that is one thing to tell a nine year a day after Christmas, the horse that might just be the "one"
might not survive the winter. I was not going to give up on Grady that easily. I knew it would take a
lot of hard work and dedication to get this horse back into tip top shape and I was ready for the
challenge. Months went by and Grady began to gradually put on weight and was finally deemed safe
to ride. I wish I could say I was the first to ride my horse, but my friends Katie and Kodi rode him to
make sure he was safe for me. After he had a few rides with my friends as his rider, it was finally
my turn to ride the gray horse. After that one ride, it seemed that

There are 9.2 million tame horses and an additional 47,329 wild horses in the United States, while
only 2 million people own horses (Moss; "Horses in the United States"). With that being said, it's
safe to say that the United States has a surplus of horses. One of the most controversial solutions for
the unwanted horses is slaughter. Horse slaughter has been around for decades, but due to changes in
societal views, the topic has ignited controversy. In today's society, horses are being viewed as
companion animals rather than livestock. The problem is that legally, horses are considered
livestock and the laws for the treatment of companion animals versus livestock are very different

If the government were to care for the 100,000 unwanted horses per year, the total cost for one year
would be $220 million (Gwinn). As an alternative for horse slaughter, groups are trying to educate
the public. The HSUS decided to create The HSUS Complete Guide to Equine Care, which explains
all of the responsibilities and price tags involved in owning a horse until the end of its life. They are
also trying to spread the word about ways to get the full horse experience, without taking on the
complete financial and physical responsibilities of owning a horse. Some of these experiences
include leasing, volunteering, attending shows, local 4–H Horse and Pony Club events, or fostering
rescue horses (Winegar, "The Horse Slaughter Debate: Solving the Puzzle") According to PETA,
"Horses are part of our heritage and don't deserve to be packed on trucks and cruelly transported to

The Fall in Economy and Horse Slaughter Essay
If one looks around the world, they would see an over population of horses, this has been a
reoccurring issue for a couple years now. There are a lot of reasons why people may not want a
horse anymore; it may be old, hurt or even crazy. There are many ways of fixing this problem
throughout the equine world, one has their breeders, horse dealers, trainers and more that all want to
solve this problem. The recent down fall in the economy has made horse owners not want their
horses anymore. The cost of maintaining a horse has greatly increased; horses are not able to survive
on just the grass in a field. Horses need the vitamins from the grain and hay. Depending on what
kind of horse you have, depends on the additional supplement they ... Show more content on

Thousands of horse owners have to drive miles upon miles to either Canada or Mexico to slaughter
their horses. People will argue that slaughtering a horse is the "humane way" to relieve the unwanted
horse population. Since one is responsible for the over population, one should be the one responsible
for reducing the numbers. Horse meat can be used for many things, dog food or other bi–products.
One can slaughter a cow or a pig without anyone saying anything. Euthanizing a horse can be
extremely expensive, a vet has to come administrate the medicine and then one has to dispose of the
body because it is against the law to have a dead horse carcass lying around your farm. The cost of
this is often why people just leave their horses to just rot away or throw them on to another farm so
it is someone else's responsibility. USDA studies show that 92% of American horses killed in
American Slaughter Plants were in perfect health. Owners will sell their horses by the pound; they
would prefer an overweight horse over a skinny horse any day. "Wild for Life's" study shows that a
great amount of registered Thoroughbred foals born are slaughtered for foal crop. Horses that are
sent to slaughtering houses are often rejected from the breeding farms they were sent to. A horse that
is rejected is often not the right color, body type, breed or gender. The meat buyers will try and stuff

Persuasive Essay On Horse Slaughter
When you think of horses, you might think of them as one of the symbols of the United States. You
might think of a founding father riding into the sunset on his faithful mount. According to an article
written by Brandon Gaille, 80% of American voters are against horse slaughter. But, I want you to
consider what would happen if the US allowed horse slaughter back into its borders again. Could
you imagine walking into a steakhouse and ordering a horse steak? American horses are being sent
into other countries to be inhumanely slaughtered for their meat, and the US is not reaping any
benefits from this process. Today, I invite you to listen about why horse slaughter is needed in the
US, what causes the need for humane horse slaughter, and why horse slaughter is the solution to this
problem. According to an article written by Brandon Gaille, approximately 144,000 horses were sent
to Mexico or Canada to be inhumanely slaughtered in 2013. That's an extreme amount of America's
horses being sent across the border to be inhumanely slaughtered. Horses being sent across the
border often suffer during the trailer ride. These slaughter trailers are very dangerous in the fact that
they are crammed full of sick horses, and there is often no food or water for long periods of time. If
the US brought slaughter back, the animals would be humanely slaughtered and would not have to
be transported inhumanely for long distances.According to The Horse Slaughter Conundrum, 44%

Commercial Horse Slaughter Research Paper
It is not possible to humanely execute a commercial horse for slaughter simply because of the
biology of horses and the nature of the industry. The dark reality of horse slaughter plants is that
most horses suffer a long time before their end. In transport, horses can go for days without water,
food or rest in overcrowded trucks in which they after often killed or seriously injured. When the
horses arrive to the actual facility, they are crammed in a small corral with no food or water. Since
horses are skittish by nature, it makes the pre–slaughter more stressful and difficult. When their
fight–or–flight response is enabled it makes the process more strenuous so horses often suffer
bashes and blows or remain conscious while being dismembered,

Legalizing Horse Slaughter
People are curious. Its our human nature. Have you ever been curious about the meat you eat?
Where it comes from, how it was killed, and is it safe to eat? In America we eat beef, pork, and
poultry for the average everyday consumption. What about other countries, or other parts of the
world? What do they eat? Your beloved pet, your furry companion, your best friend. Maybe your
horse, perhaps. What is this horse slaughter that people are speaking of? Should it be legal? Yes. It
should be legal with limits. It is most likely that anyone you ask about horse slaughter will have an
opinion. Some strongly believe it is cruel, and inhumane, some believe it is for a good cause, or
helping the world. Others just don't know their facts, or don't care either way. " Horse slaughter is
the practice of killing and butchering horses for human consumption or animal foods
manufacturing" ( Jeras, 1).
A question often thought about is whether or not horse slaughter is humane. If you ask many people,
they will say no. Why isn't it humane?
Here is a couple of things to know. Usually the conditions are unsanitary, and infected with disease.
The horses could have injuries from minor to major from the ride to the slaughter house, or from
entering the slaughter house. The horses could even have had injuries or health issues before loading
into the trailer to begin with. It is definitely questionable as to whether anyone checks up on updated
health check ups on the horses purchased in kill

Persuasive Essay On Horse Slaughter
Throughout, history horses have always been there for humankind, but these four–legged friends
have had an unfortunate experience in certain point of time in the United States. The reason is Horse
slaughter which is a term that refers to the killing and processing of horses for human consumption.
What makes this process sicking is in the name itself "slaughter" it's a brutal and horrifying sight for
a horse's last moments on Earth. The torture for these horses starts long before they enter the
slaughterhouses. At times, when the horses are transported by the horse meat industry, it is done
under poor circumstances for the horse's health; for instance long journeys, cramped spaces, and
deprived of food and water. Then, when the horses finally arrive at the slaughterhouse, the horses
are put under extreme temperatures and are left outside for long periods of time until the real
slaughter commences. What makes it more black–hearted is that no sort of euthanasia is used during
the slaughter for the horses, euthanasia is defined as a gentle, and painless death for horses, so that
they do not suffer as much.
The social belief in the United States is that horses have the same favored status as dogs and cats,
thus making them companions to humans. An implication can be made that if horse slaughter is still
counting in the US and has not stopped, then that can pave the way for dogs and cats in animal
shelters to be exported and slaughtered as well. In the US most Americans,

and burros in total were adopted into private care and 419 were sold into private care. Tom Gorey

Horse Abuse Research Paper
"The time has come to end this cruelty and open up a new chapter in our treatment of horses."
– Humane Society
Does the horse abuser ever think how horrible it would be if you didn't get fed for weeks on end?
The abuser thinks that it's alright to beat horses until they bleed or until they slowly die. Horse abuse
of any kind is not alright; it's cruel. People abuse horses for many reasons; money, anger, or to feel
like they are more powerful than a 1,000 pound horse. Horse abuse is becoming an enormous
problem in society. There are rescuers out there, but many more are needed, and ultimately, the goal
is to find good homes for these abused animals. Horses get mistreated in different ways, whether it's
soaring, physical abuse or neglect. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, the slaughter pipeline process is when a horse goes from a home, to the slaughter,
Amanda Batchelor writes about it, "Abused Horse Gets New Home" on the website, WPLG; "They
can come from a good or bad home, but eventually, they can end up going to the slaughterhouse."
Horses that get brought to the slaughterhouse usually come from a horrible home and typically are
sick, deteriorating, or abused. The people in the terrible home are the start of the slaughter pipeline,
they mistreat the horse, they sell it or bring it to the slaughterhouse, the horse gets killed or can
become in more pain. After the horse leaves the old residence, they go to a horrific place, " If they
really love them they wouldn't dump them into the pipeline" was said by Horse Human Society on
the article "Help Save Abused Horses" by You Caring. The conditions that horses are put through
are unbearable, standing in a pen with hundreds, no food or water. Millions of horses are killed just
for meat, money, or the abuser is done with the horse. Horse slaughter is a brutal and terrifying way

The Ban On Horse Processing Should No Longer Stand
In the year of 2007, congress, after relentless pressure from animal rights activists, enacted a ban on
the United States horse slaughter industry. This left ranchers, farmers, and horses to face the
consequences. While lobbyists meant to help the horses of America, they have negatively impacted
these animals in many ways. The ban on horse processing should no longer stand because of what
has become of the horse industry, and the life of American horses. It has led to more animal abuse
than previously existed, negatively affected the horse industry and economy, and let the American
equine population grow to nearly unmanageable heights.
People say that Horses built America, and that is true. Because of their major contribution to the ...

As an immediate effect of the closure of American harvesting facilities, people began to ship horses
to Mexico and Canada. In these countries, there are no laws governing the humane killing of
animals. In these countries, horses have very little chance of dying painlessly. According to a report
to Congress by the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) the number of horses
exported from the United States and then slaughtered increased from 33,000 in 2006 prior to the
ban, to 138,000 in 2010, three years after the ban. (GAO, 12) In addition to the heartless killing
tactics they now face, horses intended for slaughter now face extended transportation distances,
which can prove hazardous. The ban of horse slaughter in the United States did not help these
animals.
Further problems that have arisen in relation to horse abuse include abandonment and neglect.
Owners seeking to rid themselves of these costly animals, generally due to financial situations, have
an increased difficulty in finding a place for their horses to go. This leads to abandonment or
neglect. Horse owners who no longer want their horses, or cannot afford them anymore, face fewer
options in getting unwanted horses off of their hands. Many owners turn to abandoning their horses,
which constitutes animal abuse. They have a hard time finding other ways to rid themselves of an
unwanted horse, apparently hard enough that

The Pros And Cons Of Wild Horse Roundups
Imagine you are on a mountain and you turn around a notice a herd of wild horses grazing happily,
then all of a sudden you hear a low buzz in the distance. You notice that the wild horses become
agitated and start to descend into the valley of the mountain closely being followed by a helicopter.
You see the horses forced into holding pens and being separated from their bands wondering why
this is happening. Now try to imagine a word without the wild horses. Many people consider wild
horses to be a symbol of the west, and consider these wild horse roundups to be unnecessary and
cruel, while other people believe that wild horse roundups are necessary to keep the condition of
their natural landscape at its best quality. People argue that there are pros and cons to wild horse
roundups. Some pros that people state are that reduces the population of wild horses, and that it
improves the condition of the land that the wild horses graze on, while other people argue that
roundups kill many horses, horses are forced to separate from their herds or bands as they are
sometimes referred to as, and these roundups take horses out of their natural habitats, and put into
government holding facilities where there are more wild horses being held captive than there are left
in the wild. Now the question is are wild horse roundups truly the best for control of the wild horse
population and control of the environment, or is there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress Analysis
In the passage chosen from Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Siji, the villagers are
confronted with the death of a buffalo. This "accidental' death reveals the double–sided nature of the
village, which spotlights their furtiveness, spiritual morals and their thirst for acceptance in their
new re–educated world.
In this passage, the death of working buffalo highlighted the double–sided nature of the village. For
example, on page 94, the narrator heard a rumor that the headman was in on allowing a "slaughter of
a buffalo". Slaughtering a working buffalo is illegal in the village, but the headman is somehow
bribed to let it happen. Violent diction is used within the first quote to describe how someone used
physical force to take the buffalo's life. When a death is considered violent, it usually strings from a
murder, making the death not an accident. The author also uses selection of detail when describing
taking the buffalos life. For instance, "There was some confusion about which buffalo would be
killed and in what manner because it was against the law to slaughter working animals that were
used in the field." By using the words "killed" and "slaughtered" in the same sentence, the quote
portrays the confliction of slaughtering or killing the buffalo as if "killing" it would be more
humane. A Little further in the passage there is situational irony when the headman gets ready so
"the animal could be put out of its misery." This situational irony brings in

The Issue Of Horse Slaughter
In today's world dogs may very well be considered man's best friend, but in the days of old horses
weren't just man's best friend, they were the most important tool in his possession. From being a
form transportation to being used in competitions and battles to even being a source of food, horses
have always been an iconic figure in American history. Movies such as The Horse Whisperer,
Dreamer, and Flicka portray horses as majestic and powerful creatures full of grace and beauty that
are much more of a companion than a tool. This is quite possibly why the topic of horse slaughter
has been such a taboo in today's culture. While in many countries around the world horsemeat is
considered a type of delicacy, to most American's the idea of eating these exquisite creatures is hard
to stomach. There are people who see no wrong in slaughtering horses just like any other livestock
animal, though others find it inhumane and cruel. Those who are pro–slaughter have many practical
and economic reasons for supporting it, while those opposed have ethical issues against it.
Proponents of the horse slaughter industry suggest it creates a source of income for many horse
owners. Horses are very expensive to own with the average annual cost of a horse being
approximately $3,876 per horse (Williams). Many horses are unwanted for several reasons, either
they don't have the potential the owner originally thought or they have gotten too old for work or the

Soring In Horse Slaughter
Soring is a cruel practice used on horses to exaggerate their gaits. It is commonly found in gaited
horses such as the Tennessee Walking Horse. Chemicals such as mustard oil, diesel, or kerosene are
put on the legs of the horse and left there for a few days. This causes painful sores, and to avoid
detection at shows they often use a chemical stripping agent to get rid of the scarring. Then action
devices such as chains are placed on these sores to make these horses accentuate their gaits. Another
type of soring is grinding down the sole of the hoof to expose the sensitive tissues. These methods
often make the horse pick up their legs higher and faster (AVMA, 2012). One way that soring could
be stopped is if the public was made more aware

Horse Slaughter Should be Illegal
Imagine the worst way to torture an animal, that's how horses are being slaughtered everyday! I feel
horse slaughter should be illegal because organizations are being created to help stop horse

First off, organizations are being created to help stop horse slaughter. Henry Bergh stopped a cart
driver from beating his horse, resulting in the first sucessful arrest for horse mistreatment on April

Horse slaughter is not humane euthanasia, while, euthanasia is defined as a gentle, painless death
provided in order to prevent suffering, slaughter is a brutal and terrifying end for horses ("Horse
Slaughter is not Euthanasia"). It is very shocking to hear all the awful things that horses go through
in the slaughter process. When the horses are herded through the plant to slaughter, many workers
use fiberglass rods to poke and beat their faces, necks, backs and legs as the animals are shoved
through the facility into the kill pen (Horse Slaughter "). The USDA recently released photos of
horses with broken bones protruding from their bodies, eyeballs hanging by a thread of skin, and
open wounds, all taken at former U.S horse slaughter plants. This does not sound like animals that
people love and have used as companion pets for many generations ( "The Horse Fund"). Former
inspector has stated that horses are only stunned for 30 seconds, long enough to be hung up by a
hind leg ("Jeras") .The horse is still fully conscious at the start of the slaughter process, during
which he or she is hung by a hind leg, his or her throat slit and body butchered. Death is the final
step, is excruciating ("Horse Slaughter").How does it sound okay to butcher an animal before it is
even killed? Horse slaughter is a threat to human health because horses are given hundreds of drugs
during their lives that have not been approved by the FDA for use in animals intended for human
consumption ("ASPCA"). Horses are given medications , prescribed by vets that allows them to
enter the human food chain, but yet people still consume it ("The Horse Fund") . The slaughter
process is also inherently cruel, as horses are difficult to stun properly and may be repeatedly injured
or stabbed during the procedure("How to Help a Horse"). Each year more than 100,000 American

Horse Meat Is A Great Substitute For Popular Meats
Pros With increasing obesity rates across the globe, the demand for health–conscious foods is higher
than ever. Horse meat is a great substitute for popular meats that are socially accepted today. Horse
meat is characterized as a red meat like beef, pork, sheep, and goat. While horse meat is like beef in
appearance, it has more protein and vitamins, and a less fat percentage. Horse meat is also
calorically lower than beef, veal, pork, lamb, and sheep, making it ideal for the rising concern in the
United States about a healthy food supply (Stanciu, 2015). If eventually socially acceptable, horse
meat could be the next big fad on the markets.

Brazil economically capitalized on the export market by shipping over two thousand tons of horse
meat to its most extensive market, the European Union, in 2011 alone. The total value of Brazil's
horse meat export that year was equivalent to almost seven–million dollars. With a struggling
economy in Brazil, the value of horse meat exports provided the necessary boost. In 2012, Brazil's
total horse count added up to almost five hundred and fifty million horses ("Horsemeat production
in South America," 2014). With a plethora of available horses, one can see that even though horse
slaughter is implemented in Brazil, the total horse population is hardly affected as horses are still
widespread throughout the country.
Another troubling aspect is the environmental problems that could come about due to improper
carcass disposal of dead horses. The halt of horse slaughter in the United States has caused the
sudden need to dispose of millions of bodies of horses which is bound to create a plethora of
environmental problems such as soil contamination ("Horse slaughter bill making waves," 2004).
Horse slaughter provided owners with old or injured horses the ability to rid of them for an eventual
product. Common disposal practices like burial could provide problems while the body decomposes,
and eventually affect the water supply.

Horse slaughter. Is it really worth it?
Horse slaughter has been going on for a long time now and humans have increased their horsemeat
consumption because of the mad cow disease. Mad cow disease is issued from the fattening foods
farmers give to their cattle. In the food are sheep's' bones grinded into tiny, tiny bits. Ignorant till the
outburst, makers didn't know that in sheep bones there is the virus of the dreaded disease. The
disease doesn't affect sheep as it is only in their bones but when the cows eat it, it gets into their
systems and is passed on through their meat to humans.

This horror can go on up to 90 hours. When they get to the slaughterhouse, the horses are released
into another pen.
Blinded by the light, they trip down the ramp and stumble into others. There is no food or drink and
the many horses are herded into a narrow passageway where they can only move forward single file.
They can smell the blood and death but can't place it as their senses have weakened without food or
water. Stumbling, they follow their friends along to the knocking box. In some countries they use
hammers, others a gun like thing. These metal tools go through the forehead and split the bone, right
into the brain, aiming to make the horses senseless. In pain, they collapse. In America, for example,
the horses slip down a ramp into a blood–sodden room. There, a man hoists them up into the air by
tying their hind legs. In other countries, France for example, the horses are left on the floor where
their throats are slashed and they bleed into the gutter. In both countries, the legs are broken or even
hacked off while the horse is bleeding to death.
The reason why they bleed them to death is so that the meat is good for human consumption. The
governments have imposed a law that the horses, or slaughtered animals, must be made senseless.

Horse Slaughter
The topic of horse slaughter doesn't usually come up very often in everyday conversation. Horse
slaughter is more of an implicit subject, which your everyday person doesn't know much about.
Because it is highly controversial, it has gone through the cycle of being banded and then reinstated
twice in the last 5 years. With being involved in the horse industry my entire life, I have witnessed
the effects first hand. Some people see it as killing pets, animal cruelty, and morally wrong.
However, I see it as a source of income, a way to stop the starvation and abuse of horses, an export
industry for the United States, as well as a quality meal for in times of despair. The history of people
eating horse meat dates back to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the 1930's low supply and high cost of pork and beef made horse meat rise in popularity.
Again during World War II, people were again in the same predicament. Inflation during the early
1970's raised the cost of traditional meats; Time Magazine reported from Carlson's, a butcher shop
in Westbrook, CT, that they were selling over 6,000 pounds of horse meat a day. (Weil) In 2006, the
House of Representatives voted to end horse slaughter; the bill passed to make the killing and
selling American horses for human consumption an illegal practice in the United States.
Today in the US, people do not consume horse meat on a whole sale basis. But because many other
counties do, the exporting of horse meat is a huge industry. When the ban was in place, US horses
were being transported to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered instead. From 2006 to 2010 the
increase in horses being exported to Canada and Mexico was 148 and 660 percent. They are loaded
up on trailers and shipped across the boarders, often times going days without food or water until
they reach their destination. The regulations, or lack thereof, are different than in the US.
(Shesgreen) Valley Meat Co. owner Rick De Los Santos brings up valid points in his interview with
NBC News last week. The majority of people, who are against slaughter, are getting caught up on
the "ick" factor of killing our "pets". However, the process is the exact same for cows and pigs.

The Slaughter of Horses
Slaughtering horses for human consumption in the United States started in the early 1970's.
Americans do not eat horsemeat; we consider horses to be favored animals, just like dogs and cats.
The idea of eating a horse, a cat, or a dog just goes against our very culture. It was foreign interests
that brought the horse slaughter industry to the United States and built equine slaughterhouses here.
By the 1990's, there were at least sixteen equine slaughterhouses operating all across the United
States. At that time, most Americans did not even realize that such an industry even existed in their
country. Over the years, the industry grew larger and people began to use slaughter as an opportune
way to get rid of their undesired horses. Rather than take responsibility for their horses by either
taking the time to place them in a horse sanctuary or by paying a licensed veterinarian put them
down humanely, owners would ship them to a slaughter house and get paid for doing so. In today's
United States there is a debate ensuing on whether to lift the ban on equine slaughter which was
enacted in 2007. There are practical as well as commercial arguments that can be made in favor of
horse slaughter, and there are ethical and environmental reasons to oppose it. In this paper I plan on
addressing both sides of the debate as well as explaining each sides main points. In 2007, the last
United States' plant capable of equine slaughter was closed due to a district court ruling making it

Persuasive Speech On Horse Slaughter
Every little girl dreams of having a horse, but what do you do with that horse when he is too old to
be rode and he struggles to come in and eat his grain? Most likely you don't have the heart to put
him down yourself, and to have him euthanized costs so much, but are there any other options? Yes,
there is one more option, that is horse slaughter. Don't be afraid of it just because you hear the word
slaughter, the horses are treated well and they are put down humanely. Horse slaughter is a big
controversy in the United States, and there are many people that are against it, but I'm here to tell
you why everyone should be for horse slaughter. Horse slaughter is something that is needed and not
something that is evil. Today I'm going to tell you about why everyone should be for horse slaughter
and how it can help to control the horse population, help stimulate the economy and help feed
people that are starving. First, horse slaughter can help control the horse population. By taking
horses to slaughter then people can sell their unwanted, dangerous, and old horses. Now there are
many of you that might say they could also just be euthanized, but this would cost the owners a
fortune. If they sell their horse to a slaughter house, then the owner no longer has the dangerous
horse and he also made money instead of losing money. Since the United States Banned horse
slaughter then abandonment and neglect have in increased by 50% according to Alison Rowe

The Wild Of The Innocent
Through the Eyes of the Innocent
Whether you ride English or Western saddle we can all agree that the horse contains a special place
in our hearts. "The one thing you need to know about horses, says Jim Stitt, is they love to work and
perform." (Fong, Petty. It Was Urban Vs Cowboys in Fight for Animal Rights.) The horse has been
used all throughout history from the Spanish Conquistadors to the Englishman during the American
Revolution. Now horses can be found on race tracks, rodeos, shows, large and small farms, and
slaughter homes. Even though some horse owners claim abuse is nothing more than discipline, and
horse meat is high in protein, low in fat, and helps slaughter homes gain bigger profits and
investment from overseas companies, horse abuse and slaughter should not be taken lightly because
it is inhumane to abuse a horse to the brink of death and claim it is "discipline," most slaughter
homes are in insalubrious conditions and environments, and most horse abuse is done inside
slaughter homes.
Discipline is no longer discipline when the horse is at the brink of death. The type of abuse depends
on the activities the horses do. Abuse and Discipline are two different things. One is not followed by
the other. Discipline is used to correct and train a horse to not make the same mistake over again.
Abuse is used to torment and torture the horse for no reason until the horse is dead. "That quality
that we love is also a quality that allows people to abuse them... They

There is a stereotypical image of horses found in a slaughter hold: they are either skinny, sick, or
old. So why should the U.S. prevent the practice? According to the USDA, most of the horses found
in a slaughterhouse are in perfect health and are formally owned by people as pets. Many owner's
explanations as to why they decided to send their horse or horses to slaughter is simply because they
cannot afford to take care of them anymore, they no longer have a use (lameness) and convenience.
Although horses often can be pricey to own, there are other options to getting rid of them as
opposed to shipping them off to a slaughter plant. For example, selling them to another person who
will give them a home, or even donating them to a horse rescue

Horses go through suffering, they are neglected, abused, starved, emaciated, frightened, and
slaughtered. They are put through stress and unsafe conditions, especially when being slaughtered.
There are many organizations which target mistreated domestic animals and acknowledge necessary
improvements in slaughterhouses. Horses are used in many different ways and are sometimes
referred to as pets. Many are used for labor, leisure and friendship. Ranchers use horses to move
cows, participate in ranch rodeos, rides in the pasture, work purposes, and more. Yet, thousands of
horses are not treated like that and never get to experience the true and exciting life of a horse.
About 150,000 horses are left unwanted every year due to owners being unable to afford the
responsibilities. Many owners are unaware of the cost of owning a horse and the much–needed
responsibility and commitment. This is why a majority of horses go to slaughterhouses and do not
get treated correctly there either. Horses have rights just like every other animal. They have basic
needs such as water, food and shelter. In slaughterhouses, they are required to have a decent amount
of space and their basic needs taken care of. They also have the right not to be slaughtered for food,

Persuasive Essay On Horse Slaughter
An ongoing ethical debate in America is whether horse slaughter should be legalized in the United
States. This debate grabs the emotions of many individuals and arises many questions. Horses are
normally considered companions that are used for labor and events. Isn't it inhumane to kill a
companion? Aren't there enough homes for our furry companions? In all reality horses are expensive
animals and aren't always used for their breeding purposes. Humane societies/rescues barely have
enough room for neglected small animals, bringing in larger mammals is not plausible. Saving every
animal will cause an overpopulation problem and increase the rate of neglect. Horses are being
neglected, starved, abused, and even shipped across the country, banning slaughter houses is the
truly the inhumane route. Slaughtering isn't an easy alternative, but allowing them to suffer isn't any
better.
The economy today is slowly dwindling down, and the costs are rising for daily living expenses.
Horses are normally not in the budget for many families, leaving many horses homeless. The normal
yearly cost for a horse is around 2,419– 3,876 and the average life span of a horse is 25–30 years.
This cost just covers food, routine vet checks, farrier, and general maintenance. This does not
include the price of the horse, the chance of having an emergency vet call arise and the tack that
may be used. This animal must eat about 2.5% its own body weight which on average is 1,100

Horse Slaughter : The Inhumane Murder Of Innocent Horses
Horse slaughter is just exactly as it sounds. It is the inhumane murder of innocent horses. I will
never understand how someone can sit and actually enjoy a meal consisting of horse meat knowing
how that horse came to be served for dinner. It's a cruel and heartbreaking process that starts from
the moment the poor horse is loaded on a transport trailer. These horse suffer in worst fashion from
abuse and neglect until they are unfortunately killed and severed for a meal. This is not okay. The
practice of horse slaughter must be ended in order to stop the extremely inhumane torture of this
precious companions. Horses have never been raised for human consumption in the United States.
However, for decades now, horses have been bought, stolen, or acquired under false pretenses and
then sent to the slaughter house all throughout the world– including here on US soil. According to
the Humane Society of America, over 100,000 horses are sent to slaughter each year. Horse meat
sales rapidly declined for many years, but it has become popular again in overseas countries like
France, Belgium, Italy, and Japan. Naturally, as the demand for the horse meat increased, so did the
demand for horses to be slaughtered. Horse meat is considered a "clean meat" and a tasty alternative
to beef and other traditional meats because of the multiple contamination scares. Those who
consume horse flesh (typically in Europe and Asia) are willing to pay extremely high prices for
horse meat. Butchers and

A horse is an animal well known on farms, in Amish communities, used in sports and often kept as

Horses are skittish by nature making accurate pre–slaughter stunning difficult and result in the horse

Thankfully, the plant was closed but we still have a problem with the export of horses for slaughter.
One may argue, if there was a way to humanely slaughter a horse would you still be against horse

Descriptive Essay On The Slaughter House
This is absolutely despicable, these are living breathing creatures.
I stared out from the dirty car window and I sat in my parked car across the road from the slaughter
house. Hundreds of cows milled aimlessly with glazed eyes, through dust clouds of the overturned
earth. I watched as several other cars pulled up behind mine, checking in my rear view mirror to see
a familiar face. Bianca in her little yellow bug looked so out of place on this filthy dirt road. Today
was going to be the day we put a stop to the slaughter. Bianca stepped out of her car and I watched
as she slowly walked towards the fence of the slaughter house. A man parked further behind us
called out something illegible but she took no heed.
Ok... this is it.
I jumped out of my little old truck, and sprinted across the road to the gate. Bianca had cut the lock
and stood back as I slammed the gate wide open. The cows stared with starved for attention but
overfed ,eyes in my direction. I ran through the tightly packed animals and shoved over the nearest
feeding trough , motioning to Bianca to come with me. She shook her head and backed away, but
held the gate open. I began to push the nearest bull and he bucked , starting a panic. The animals
raced towards the gate as Bianca pressed herself against it to avoid being trampled. My laugh could

Should Horse Slaughter Be Banned Essay
A Slaughter ban, is not the answer for the Canadian Horse As of "2007, [in the United States] the

this, if Canada, enacts a ban on horse slaughter, there is no guarantee that it will save equine lives or
improve their welfare. The slaughter of horses in Canada does not require a ban for the following
reasons, it results in horses travelling further for slaughter, it leads to higher rates of horse

Contrary to other livestock that are raised specifically for human consumption, the purpose of
breeding horses is for pleasure uses. As Lenz reflected "Horses processed for meat represent the
lowest economic level of the horse population and typify the unwanted horse in the United States"
(253). Therefore, when a horse ends up at slaughter facility, it is likely due to one or more of the
following reasons, the owner no longer finds the horse suitable, the horse is dangerous, the horse is
injured, the horse is unable to be re–homed, or finally the owner can no longer afford to continue
feeding and caring for the horse. Arguably, rescue facilities to take in unwanted horses in the United
States exist, however they "do not meet the needs to care for these horses due to limited capacity
and funding" (Stull

Essay On Horse Slaughter
Horse slaughter and whether or not it should be legal in the US has been an ongoing debate. Horse
slaughter can be a touchy subject for people. People have very strong opinions about it whether you
are for it or against it. In this essay I will explain my views on the matter of Horse slaughter in the
US.
Horses have been a part of man's life for a very long time. The relationship between man and horse
first began at the time of the horse's domestication between 4000 and 3500 B.C. They have been by
our side to help us complete agricultural tasks as well as recreational uses for thousands of years.
While the USDA may classify the horse as livestock, many Americans consider the horse to be
something more along the lines of a companion animal.

Horse Slaughter Essay

  • 1. Horse Slaughter Essay | The Positive Impact of The Horse Slaughter Industry | Alyssa R. BigonGBUS 2903: Legal Environment of BusinessDr. Anthony GorospeDue Date April 8, 2012 | | | History of Horse Meat Consumption The ancient Botai culture in Kazakhstan first domesticated horses 5,500 years ago, and its economy was equine–based. Horses were used for labor, transportation, milk, and consumption. Even at that early time, if the horses did not succumb to the rigors of daily life, work–related injuries, or battle, then they were sold for salvage. The money received from the salvage was reinvested in a younger, stronger horse. The salvaged horse would go to the rendering plant for leather, horsehair furniture, glue, gelatin, cosmetics, or to the butcher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The closing of the last plant in the USA in 2007 caused thousands of horses to be sent to Mexico and Canada. The US Senate has passed a resolution and is urging the House of Representatives to offer incentives to open horse processing plants in the United States. Senators say it is cruel to force old or lame horses to wait for natural death. Former Missouri State Senator Matt Bartle, a Republican, stated, "The unintended consequences have been disastrous for horses. We now have horses all over the state that are skin and bones that are suffering tremendously. Some people actually enjoy the taste of horse meat. It feeds dogs. It feeds other animals." Former Missouri State Senator Frank Barnitz, a Democrat, stated "People need to realize that horses are not pets; horses are livestock." The Argument for Horse Slaughterhouses I am the daughter of a livestock dealer. My father was an amazing wrangler and rancher. Throughout my life, we have bought and sold many horses––too many to count, and I have also sent my own fair share to the slaughter plants. As a young teen I had a horse we called Whino, he was a great horse for me when I was learning to ride and wanting to follow Dad around. There comes a time in a horse's life when they are not capable of doing what they once were or that they become sore or crippled to lead a life with meaning or comfort. I was raised to understand life and death and that one will follow the other. I knew when we had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Horse Slaughter Grady To the untrained human eye, a horse may look like just an animal with a brain, a heart and four legs, but to an equestrian a horse is so much more than just a horse. A horse is an equestrian's teacher and most importantly a partner. Behind each combination of horse and rider is an untold story of hard work and an unbreakable bond no one can sever. That is why my rescue horse, Grady, is my most treasured object. It was the day after Christmas of 2011, my dad and I were driving out to the horse barn I had ridden at for a few years. My trainer had just bought a horse from a horse trader and we were off to see if this horse was the one I would make memories with. Of course every nine year old, like myself at the time, thinks that the "one" is every horse they ever see. I walked down to the barn and noticed in the first stall nearest to the door, was the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At first glance, you would have thought Grady was healthy and happy, but underneath his blanket was another story waiting to be told. Grady was not at all healthy, he was suffering from a bad bout of malnutrition and of course the abuse he received in the pasture at his old barn. On that day, I had been told not to get attached to Grady because my trainer worried he would not survive the winter. Well that is one thing to tell a nine year a day after Christmas, the horse that might just be the "one" might not survive the winter. I was not going to give up on Grady that easily. I knew it would take a lot of hard work and dedication to get this horse back into tip top shape and I was ready for the challenge. Months went by and Grady began to gradually put on weight and was finally deemed safe to ride. I wish I could say I was the first to ride my horse, but my friends Katie and Kodi rode him to make sure he was safe for me. After he had a few rides with my friends as his rider, it was finally my turn to ride the gray horse. After that one ride, it seemed that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Horse Slaughter Persuasive Essay There are 9.2 million tame horses and an additional 47,329 wild horses in the United States, while only 2 million people own horses (Moss; "Horses in the United States"). With that being said, it's safe to say that the United States has a surplus of horses. One of the most controversial solutions for the unwanted horses is slaughter. Horse slaughter has been around for decades, but due to changes in societal views, the topic has ignited controversy. In today's society, horses are being viewed as companion animals rather than livestock. The problem is that legally, horses are considered livestock and the laws for the treatment of companion animals versus livestock are very different (Winegar, "The Horse Slaughter Debate: Solving the Puzzle"). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the government were to care for the 100,000 unwanted horses per year, the total cost for one year would be $220 million (Gwinn). As an alternative for horse slaughter, groups are trying to educate the public. The HSUS decided to create The HSUS Complete Guide to Equine Care, which explains all of the responsibilities and price tags involved in owning a horse until the end of its life. They are also trying to spread the word about ways to get the full horse experience, without taking on the complete financial and physical responsibilities of owning a horse. Some of these experiences include leasing, volunteering, attending shows, local 4–H Horse and Pony Club events, or fostering rescue horses (Winegar, "The Horse Slaughter Debate: Solving the Puzzle") According to PETA, "Horses are part of our heritage and don't deserve to be packed on trucks and cruelly transported to slaughter and strung up in front of other terrified and dying animals, the kindest options for other surplus horses is a rescue organization, sanctuaries with loving guardians" (Winegar, "The Horse Slaughter Debate: A Two–Sided ... • 7. The Fall in Economy and Horse Slaughter Essay If one looks around the world, they would see an over population of horses, this has been a reoccurring issue for a couple years now. There are a lot of reasons why people may not want a horse anymore; it may be old, hurt or even crazy. There are many ways of fixing this problem throughout the equine world, one has their breeders, horse dealers, trainers and more that all want to solve this problem. The recent down fall in the economy has made horse owners not want their horses anymore. The cost of maintaining a horse has greatly increased; horses are not able to survive on just the grass in a field. Horses need the vitamins from the grain and hay. Depending on what kind of horse you have, depends on the additional supplement they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thousands of horse owners have to drive miles upon miles to either Canada or Mexico to slaughter their horses. People will argue that slaughtering a horse is the "humane way" to relieve the unwanted horse population. Since one is responsible for the over population, one should be the one responsible for reducing the numbers. Horse meat can be used for many things, dog food or other bi–products. One can slaughter a cow or a pig without anyone saying anything. Euthanizing a horse can be extremely expensive, a vet has to come administrate the medicine and then one has to dispose of the body because it is against the law to have a dead horse carcass lying around your farm. The cost of this is often why people just leave their horses to just rot away or throw them on to another farm so it is someone else's responsibility. USDA studies show that 92% of American horses killed in American Slaughter Plants were in perfect health. Owners will sell their horses by the pound; they would prefer an overweight horse over a skinny horse any day. "Wild for Life's" study shows that a great amount of registered Thoroughbred foals born are slaughtered for foal crop. Horses that are sent to slaughtering houses are often rejected from the breeding farms they were sent to. A horse that is rejected is often not the right color, body type, breed or gender. • 9. Persuasive Essay On Horse Slaughter When you think of horses, you might think of them as one of the symbols of the United States. You might think of a founding father riding into the sunset on his faithful mount. According to an article written by Brandon Gaille, 80% of American voters are against horse slaughter. But, I want you to consider what would happen if the US allowed horse slaughter back into its borders again. Could you imagine walking into a steakhouse and ordering a horse steak? American horses are being sent into other countries to be inhumanely slaughtered for their meat, and the US is not reaping any benefits from this process. Today, I invite you to listen about why horse slaughter is needed in the US, what causes the need for humane horse slaughter, and why horse slaughter is the solution to this problem. According to an article written by Brandon Gaille, approximately 144,000 horses were sent to Mexico or Canada to be inhumanely slaughtered in 2013. That's an extreme amount of America's horses being sent across the border to be inhumanely slaughtered. Horses being sent across the border often suffer during the trailer ride. These slaughter trailers are very dangerous in the fact that they are crammed full of sick horses, and there is often no food or water for long periods of time. If the US brought slaughter back, the animals would be humanely slaughtered and would not have to be transported inhumanely for long distances.According to The Horse Slaughter Conundrum, 44% of these horses are ... • 11. Commercial Horse Slaughter Research Paper It is not possible to humanely execute a commercial horse for slaughter simply because of the biology of horses and the nature of the industry. The dark reality of horse slaughter plants is that most horses suffer a long time before their end. In transport, horses can go for days without water, food or rest in overcrowded trucks in which they after often killed or seriously injured. When the horses arrive to the actual facility, they are crammed in a small corral with no food or water. Since horses are skittish by nature, it makes the pre–slaughter more stressful and difficult. When their fight–or–flight response is enabled it makes the process more strenuous so horses often suffer bashes and blows or remain conscious while being dismembered, ... • 13. Legalizing Horse Slaughter People are curious. Its our human nature. Have you ever been curious about the meat you eat? Where it comes from, how it was killed, and is it safe to eat? In America we eat beef, pork, and poultry for the average everyday consumption. What about other countries, or other parts of the world? What do they eat? Your beloved pet, your furry companion, your best friend. Maybe your horse, perhaps. What is this horse slaughter that people are speaking of? Should it be legal? Yes. It should be legal with limits. It is most likely that anyone you ask about horse slaughter will have an opinion. Some strongly believe it is cruel, and inhumane, some believe it is for a good cause, or helping the world. Others just don't know their facts, or don't care either way. " Horse slaughter is the practice of killing and butchering horses for human consumption or animal foods manufacturing" ( Jeras, 1). A question often thought about is whether or not horse slaughter is humane. If you ask many people, they will say no. Why isn't it humane? Here is a couple of things to know. Usually the conditions are unsanitary, and infected with disease. The horses could have injuries from minor to major from the ride to the slaughter house, or from entering the slaughter house. The horses could even have had injuries or health issues before loading into the trailer to begin with. It is definitely questionable as to whether anyone checks up on updated health check ups on the horses purchased in kill ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Persuasive Essay On Horse Slaughter Throughout, history horses have always been there for humankind, but these four–legged friends have had an unfortunate experience in certain point of time in the United States. The reason is Horse slaughter which is a term that refers to the killing and processing of horses for human consumption. What makes this process sicking is in the name itself "slaughter" it's a brutal and horrifying sight for a horse's last moments on Earth. The torture for these horses starts long before they enter the slaughterhouses. At times, when the horses are transported by the horse meat industry, it is done under poor circumstances for the horse's health; for instance long journeys, cramped spaces, and deprived of food and water. Then, when the horses finally arrive at the slaughterhouse, the horses are put under extreme temperatures and are left outside for long periods of time until the real slaughter commences. What makes it more black–hearted is that no sort of euthanasia is used during the slaughter for the horses, euthanasia is defined as a gentle, and painless death for horses, so that they do not suffer as much. The social belief in the United States is that horses have the same favored status as dogs and cats, thus making them companions to humans. An implication can be made that if horse slaughter is still counting in the US and has not stopped, then that can pave the way for dogs and cats in animal shelters to be exported and slaughtered as well. The Ban On Horse Processing Should No Longer Stand In the year of 2007, congress, after relentless pressure from animal rights activists, enacted a ban on the United States horse slaughter industry. This left ranchers, farmers, and horses to face the consequences. While lobbyists meant to help the horses of America, they have negatively impacted these animals in many ways. The ban on horse processing should no longer stand because of what has become of the horse industry, and the life of American horses. It has led to more animal abuse than previously existed, negatively affected the horse industry and economy, and let the American equine population grow to nearly unmanageable heights. People say that Horses built America, and that is true. Because of their major contribution to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As an immediate effect of the closure of American harvesting facilities, people began to ship horses to Mexico and Canada. In these countries, there are no laws governing the humane killing of animals. In these countries, horses have very little chance of dying painlessly. According to a report to Congress by the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) the number of horses exported from the United States and then slaughtered increased from 33,000 in 2006 prior to the ban, to 138,000 in 2010, three years after the ban. (GAO, 12) In addition to the heartless killing tactics they now face, horses intended for slaughter now face extended transportation distances, which can prove hazardous. The ban of horse slaughter in the United States did not help these animals. Further problems that have arisen in relation to horse abuse include abandonment and neglect. Owners seeking to rid themselves of these costly animals, generally due to financial situations, have an increased difficulty in finding a place for their horses to go. This leads to abandonment or neglect. Horse owners who no longer want their horses, or cannot afford them anymore, face fewer options in getting unwanted horses off of their hands. The Pros And Cons Of Wild Horse Roundups Imagine you are on a mountain and you turn around a notice a herd of wild horses grazing happily, then all of a sudden you hear a low buzz in the distance. You notice that the wild horses become agitated and start to descend into the valley of the mountain closely being followed by a helicopter. You see the horses forced into holding pens and being separated from their bands wondering why this is happening. Now try to imagine a word without the wild horses. Many people consider wild horses to be a symbol of the west, and consider these wild horse roundups to be unnecessary and cruel, while other people believe that wild horse roundups are necessary to keep the condition of their natural landscape at its best quality. People argue that there are pros and cons to wild horse roundups. Some pros that people state are that reduces the population of wild horses, and that it improves the condition of the land that the wild horses graze on, while other people argue that roundups kill many horses, horses are forced to separate from their herds or bands as they are sometimes referred to as, and these roundups take horses out of their natural habitats, and put into government holding facilities where there are more wild horses being held captive than there are left in the wild. This "accidental' death reveals the double–sided nature of the village, which spotlights their furtiveness, spiritual morals and their thirst for acceptance in their new re–educated world. In this passage, the death of working buffalo highlighted the double–sided nature of the village. For example, on page 94, the narrator heard a rumor that the headman was in on allowing a "slaughter of a buffalo". Slaughtering a working buffalo is illegal in the village, but the headman is somehow bribed to let it happen. Violent diction is used within the first quote to describe how someone used physical force to take the buffalo's life. When a death is considered violent, it usually strings from a murder, making the death not an accident. The author also uses selection of detail when describing taking the buffalos life. For instance, "There was some confusion about which buffalo would be killed and in what manner because it was against the law to slaughter working animals that were used in the field." By using the words "killed" and "slaughtered" in the same sentence, the quote portrays the confliction of slaughtering or killing the buffalo as if "killing" it would be more humane. The Issue Of Horse Slaughter In today's world dogs may very well be considered man's best friend, but in the days of old horses weren't just man's best friend, they were the most important tool in his possession. From being a form transportation to being used in competitions and battles to even being a source of food, horses have always been an iconic figure in American history. Movies such as The Horse Whisperer, Dreamer, and Flicka portray horses as majestic and powerful creatures full of grace and beauty that are much more of a companion than a tool. This is quite possibly why the topic of horse slaughter has been such a taboo in today's culture. While in many countries around the world horsemeat is considered a type of delicacy, to most American's the idea of eating these exquisite creatures is hard to stomach. There are people who see no wrong in slaughtering horses just like any other livestock animal, though others find it inhumane and cruel. Those who are pro–slaughter have many practical and economic reasons for supporting it, while those opposed have ethical issues against it. Proponents of the horse slaughter industry suggest it creates a source of income for many horse owners. Horses are very expensive to own with the average annual cost of a horse being approximately $3,876 per horse (Williams). Chemicals such as mustard oil, diesel, or kerosene are put on the legs of the horse and left there for a few days. This causes painful sores, and to avoid detection at shows they often use a chemical stripping agent to get rid of the scarring. Then action devices such as chains are placed on these sores to make these horses accentuate their gaits. Another type of soring is grinding down the sole of the hoof to expose the sensitive tissues. It is very shocking to hear all the awful things that horses go through in the slaughter process. When the horses are herded through the plant to slaughter, many workers use fiberglass rods to poke and beat their faces, necks, backs and legs as the animals are shoved through the facility into the kill pen (Horse Slaughter "). The USDA recently released photos of horses with broken bones protruding from their bodies, eyeballs hanging by a thread of skin, and open wounds, all taken at former U.S horse slaughter plants. This does not sound like animals that people love and have used as companion pets for many generations ( "The Horse Fund"). Former inspector has stated that horses are only stunned for 30 seconds, long enough to be hung up by a hind leg ("Jeras") .The horse is still fully conscious at the start of the slaughter process, during which he or she is hung by a hind leg, his or her throat slit and body butchered. Death is the final step, is excruciating ("Horse Slaughter").How does it sound okay to butcher an animal before it is even killed? Horse slaughter is a threat to human health because horses are given hundreds of drugs during their lives that have not been approved by the FDA for use in animals intended for human consumption ("ASPCA"). Horses are given medications , prescribed by vets that allows them to enter the human food chain, but yet people still consume it ("The Horse Fund") . Horse meat is a great substitute for popular meats that are socially accepted today. Horse meat is characterized as a red meat like beef, pork, sheep, and goat. While horse meat is like beef in appearance, it has more protein and vitamins, and a less fat percentage. Horse meat is also calorically lower than beef, veal, pork, lamb, and sheep, making it ideal for the rising concern in the United States about a healthy food supply (Stanciu, 2015). With a struggling economy in Brazil, the value of horse meat exports provided the necessary boost. In 2012, Brazil's total horse count added up to almost five hundred and fifty million horses ("Horsemeat production in South America," 2014). With a plethora of available horses, one can see that even though horse slaughter is implemented in Brazil, the total horse population is hardly affected as horses are still widespread throughout the country. Another troubling aspect is the environmental problems that could come about due to improper carcass disposal of dead horses. The halt of horse slaughter in the United States has caused the sudden need to dispose of millions of bodies of horses which is bound to create a plethora of environmental problems such as soil contamination ("Horse slaughter bill making waves," 2004). • 43. The Slaughter of Horses Slaughtering horses for human consumption in the United States started in the early 1970's. Americans do not eat horsemeat; we consider horses to be favored animals, just like dogs and cats. The idea of eating a horse, a cat, or a dog just goes against our very culture. It was foreign interests that brought the horse slaughter industry to the United States and built equine slaughterhouses here. By the 1990's, there were at least sixteen equine slaughterhouses operating all across the United States. At that time, most Americans did not even realize that such an industry even existed in their country. Over the years, the industry grew larger and people began to use slaughter as an opportune way to get rid of their undesired horses. Rather than take responsibility for their horses by either taking the time to place them in a horse sanctuary or by paying a licensed veterinarian put them down humanely, owners would ship them to a slaughter house and get paid for doing so. In today's United States there is a debate ensuing on whether to lift the ban on equine slaughter which was enacted in 2007. There are practical as well as commercial arguments that can be made in favor of horse slaughter, and there are ethical and environmental reasons to oppose it. In this paper I plan on addressing both sides of the debate as well as explaining each sides main points. "The one thing you need to know about horses, says Jim Stitt, is they love to work and perform." (Fong, Petty. It Was Urban Vs Cowboys in Fight for Animal Rights.) The horse has been used all throughout history from the Spanish Conquistadors to the Englishman during the American Revolution. Now horses can be found on race tracks, rodeos, shows, large and small farms, and slaughter homes. Even though some horse owners claim abuse is nothing more than discipline, and horse meat is high in protein, low in fat, and helps slaughter homes gain bigger profits and investment from overseas companies, horse abuse and slaughter should not be taken lightly because it is inhumane to abuse a horse to the brink of death and claim it is "discipline," most slaughter homes are in insalubrious conditions and environments, and most horse abuse is done inside slaughter homes. Discipline is no longer discipline when the horse is at the brink of death. The type of abuse depends on the activities the horses do. Abuse and Discipline are two different things. One is not followed by the other. Discipline is used to correct and train a horse to not make the same mistake over again. • 53. Persuasive Essay On Horse Slaughter An ongoing ethical debate in America is whether horse slaughter should be legalized in the United States. This debate grabs the emotions of many individuals and arises many questions. Horses are normally considered companions that are used for labor and events. Isn't it inhumane to kill a companion? Aren't there enough homes for our furry companions? In all reality horses are expensive animals and aren't always used for their breeding purposes. Humane societies/rescues barely have enough room for neglected small animals, bringing in larger mammals is not plausible. Saving every animal will cause an overpopulation problem and increase the rate of neglect. Horses are being neglected, starved, abused, and even shipped across the country, banning slaughter houses is the truly the inhumane route. Slaughtering isn't an easy alternative, but allowing them to suffer isn't any better. The economy today is slowly dwindling down, and the costs are rising for daily living expenses. Horses are normally not in the budget for many families, leaving many horses homeless. The normal yearly cost for a horse is around 2,419– 3,876 and the average life span of a horse is 25–30 years. This cost just covers food, routine vet checks, farrier, and general maintenance. The practice of horse slaughter must be ended in order to stop the extremely inhumane torture of this precious companions. Horses have never been raised for human consumption in the United States. However, for decades now, horses have been bought, stolen, or acquired under false pretenses and then sent to the slaughter house all throughout the world– including here on US soil. According to the Humane Society of America, over 100,000 horses are sent to slaughter each year. Horse meat sales rapidly declined for many years, but it has become popular again in overseas countries like France, Belgium, Italy, and Japan. Naturally, as the demand for the horse meat increased, so did the demand for horses to be slaughtered. Horse meat is considered a "clean meat" and a tasty alternative to beef and other traditional meats because of the multiple contamination scares. Those who consume horse flesh (typically in Europe and Asia) are willing to pay extremely high prices for horse meat. Butchers and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If this gets out, 'tipping horses' may replace the traditional act of 'tipping cows' carried out by bored teenagers living in rural areas of the nation. Unless you are at a restaurant tipping a server, the act of tipping is despicable! Other facts include: Determining a horse's age by examining his/her teeth. Arabian horses do not have as many vertebrae as other breeds. Humans domesticated horses more than 3,000 years ago. The majority of white horses are not born with a white coat: Their coats gradually turn white as they age. • 60. Horse Slaughter Is The Act Of Slaughtering Horses For the past five thousand years the horse has been of greater human interest for its strength than as a food source. However, American horses are still shipped over our borders and slaughtered for human consumption overseas. Horse slaughter and the export of horses from the United States should be banned because it is cruel and inhumane; furthermore, consuming American horse meat can be detrimental to human health. Horse slaughter is the act of slaughtering horses to obtain their meat for human (or animal) consumption. Horses are mainly slaughtered for human consumption, however there are some zoos that feed their animals horse meat. Horse slaughter is exactly what it sounds like, it is slaughter, these horses are not humanely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The industry is continuing to seek its reestablishment while lawsuits from animal welfare activists attempt to hinder their attempts. However although horses are not slaughtered or eaten in the United States, more than 100,000 companion, working and even wild horses are shipped to Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses for consumption overseas in Europe and Asia each year (Stepping). Horses end up at slaughter through a number of ways. The most common being that horse owners bring their horses to livestock auctions when they can no longer afford them, expecting them to find a good home. However, that is not always the case, what sellers fail to realize is there are middlemen for foreign–owned slaughterhouses, known as "kill buyers", who frequent these auctions looking for horses. Often kill buyers can be see communicating with the auctioneer in the auction ring. They often outbid genuine horse owners and rescues, robbing the horses of the opportunity for a second chance at life.(Transport) Sometimes kill buyers respond to "Free horse to good home" advertisements. These advertisements are usually from families who love their horses but can no longer afford them so they give them away. They sign a paper thinking that their horse is going to a good home but in actuality they are signing the horse's death warrant. Along with kill buyers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Slaughtering Horses A horse is an animal well known on farms, in Amish communities, used in sports and often kept as pets. Horses are considered free spirited animals that not only provide love and fun journeys, but are also put to work. Horses offer a strong structured body that can be used for travel, either riding on a horse's back or using the horse to pull a carriage, leisure, emotional support and even entertainment. In America, horses are noble animals that have impressive senses and abilities. Horses have extraordinary balance, impressive flight or fight responses to predators and have a life span of 25–30 years, thus making a horse a longtime companion. Horses not only have an impressive resume for religions like the Amish, who use horse and buggy to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This essay is not meant to judge other countries, but to make it known just what is happening to our horses that we love dearly. To get into detail, there is no humane way to slaughter these animals. Horses are skittish by nature making accurate pre–slaughter stunning difficult and result in the horse being tortured by enduring repeated blows, sometimes conscious dismemberment and rarely receive a quick and painless death (The Humane Society of the United States, 2017). The last domestic plant closed in 2007 and the USDA documented the slaughter pipeline's abundance of cruelty violations and injuries to horses, including broken bones, bones protruding from their bodies, eyeballs hanging by a thread of skin and gaping wounds (The Humane Society of the United States, 2017). Thankfully, the plant was closed but we still have a problem with the export of horses for slaughter. One may argue, if there was a way to humanely slaughter a horse would you still be against horse meat? Yes. Horses are often seen as companions and are even used to assist mentally ill rehabilitations, almost like a dog. It is taboo in America to slaughter and eat dog meat because dogs are domesticated. Dogs are also very strong animals with strong senses and good fight–or–flight responses. However, dogs are not quite as built as horses, and although dogs are also known to ... • 64. Descriptive Essay On The Slaughter House This is absolutely despicable, these are living breathing creatures. I stared out from the dirty car window and I sat in my parked car across the road from the slaughter house. Hundreds of cows milled aimlessly with glazed eyes, through dust clouds of the overturned earth. I watched as several other cars pulled up behind mine, checking in my rear view mirror to see a familiar face. Bianca in her little yellow bug looked so out of place on this filthy dirt road. Today was going to be the day we put a stop to the slaughter. Bianca stepped out of her car and I watched as she slowly walked towards the fence of the slaughter house. A man parked further behind us called out something illegible but she took no heed. Ok... this is it. I jumped out of my little old truck, and sprinted across the road to the gate. Bianca had cut the lock and stood back as I slammed the gate wide open. The cows stared with starved for attention but overfed ,eyes in my direction. I ran through the tightly packed animals and shoved over the nearest feeding trough , motioning to Bianca to come with me. She shook her head and backed away, but held the gate open. I began to push the nearest bull and he bucked , starting a panic. The animals raced towards the gate as Bianca pressed herself against it to avoid being trampled. My laugh could be heard even over the frantic mooing of panicked animals. "Take this you inhumane bast****!" A shout echoed through the compound and I turned around quickly to see ... "I've always loved horses and I just wanted to call and see if I could volunteer here, mucking stalls or just learning about horses in general." Now, almost two years later, Danielle has been given a spot on the board of the BCHR as Event Coordinator and Head of Marketing. As the only rescue in the area, the BCHR works to save horses not only from Bergen County, but from as far away as Pennsylvania. They rescue horses that have been abused or are headed for auction or slaughter and then try to find new homes for as many as possible. The fact that horse slaughter is illegal in the United States doesn't stop the cruel process from taking place. According to the ASPCA, 150,000 horses are transported over the borders to Mexico and Canada each year to be slaughtered for human consumption. "People need to learn about the need for horse rescues and the abuse that goes on in the horse community with slaughtering and horse neglect," Danielle said. "Not to say that it's more or less important than a dog rescue, but if these horses do go to slaughter it's a brutal, brutal process that people aren't really aware of." However, amidst all the political controversies, lawmakers on Capitol Hill have introduced a bill that would permanently ban horse slaughter and the exportation of horses for that purpose the ASPCA reported in early January 2016. The bill has received bipartisan support, but it doesn't seem to currently be the top priority in Congress. Until then, it's up to places like BCHR and the communities around them to save as many horses as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Persuasive Essay On Horse Slaughter Horse slaughter has a wide history starting as early as 1915 when the first bill was passed to prevent the inhumane slaughter of horses and donkeys for human consumption among many others to soon arise. The slaughter industry itself has always been secretive and tries its best to avoid public attention as it is a very controversial practice. For many years people of the UNited states have polled and voted to ban the slaughter of horses in the united states .It has been concluded that 70% of Americans oppose horse slaughter and do not think horses are raised for food or any sort of consumption. Though, various people do not know that horse slaughter is even conducted . Up to 79% percent of texas polled to be unaware of these acts in their own states even though Texas houses two of the last three slaughter houses in the United States .Many horses that enter the slaughter houses have been found to be in excellent condition and ranging from 8 to 15 years of age .Overall, since the USDA started recording horse killings in 1985, a total of 3,355,000 horses, ranging from racetrack Thoroughbreds to the nearly extinct wild horse, have been slaughtered in the US alone. Nearly a million or more American horses have been exported for slaughter to Canada and Mexico. Unfortunately the situation today remains nearly unchanged with roughly 100,000 horses being transported to slaughter plants to be inhumanely killed in unspeakable conditions in canada and central america.Currently, ... • 72. Persuasive Essay About Horse Slaughter Would you kill your best friend after years of hard work together? I believe horse slaughter is a necessary evil due to many different reasons. The first reason is due to horses that cannot be used anymore due to health reasons. It would be wonderful to be able to afford a lame horse to sit on pasture all day, but that is not always an option. Nobody is going to buy a lame horse when they can buy a perfectly able horse for the same price. Where does a lame horse go? He goes to the auction and a kill buyer buys him. He gets sent across the US border into Canada or Mexico to be slaughtered. He has to suffer through the long trailer ride in horrendous conditions to the slaughter plant. Then, he arrives at the slaughter plant. They open the trailer doors and he gets trampled by other horses trying to get off. Now, he is injured and limps out of the trailer. If there is truly a monetary problem, the horse world is full of people with a love for horses that is far greater than a love for money. These people will be more than willing to help. It is commonly argued that the alternative to slaughter is a horse being abandoned or neglected. In these cases, the people feel that slaughter is cruel and not an option. They also feel that there is no other option but to leave the issue behind or neglect it. There are thousands of horse rescue centers worldwide, there is no need for neglect, there is help. Another point that was made, is that horses cannot be dropped off at a shelter like an unwanted cat or dog. While this is true, there are horse sanctuaries which are basically an animal shelter for horses. • 76. Should Horse Slaughter Be Banned Essay A Slaughter ban, is not the answer for the Canadian Horse As of "2007, [in the United States] the last three processing plants in Texas and Illinois were closed due to state and federal laws" (Stull 68). Currently, there are "four Canadian and three to five Mexican plants in operation with federal licenses and government–inspected programs necessary for export markets" (Stull 69). In view of this, if Canada, enacts a ban on horse slaughter, there is no guarantee that it will save equine lives or improve their welfare. The slaughter of horses in Canada does not require a ban for the following reasons, it results in horses travelling further for slaughter, it leads to higher rates of horse abandonment and neglect, and finally the regulations under which horses travel, and receive stunning in Canada effectively ensure the humane treatment of horses. Other defenders of anti–slaughter legislation, have several reasons for their objections. People have very strong opinions about it whether you are for it or against it. In this essay I will explain my views on the matter of Horse slaughter in the US. Horses have been a part of man's life for a very long time. The relationship between man and horse first began at the time of the horse's domestication between 4000 and 3500 B.C. They have been by our side to help us complete agricultural tasks as well as recreational uses for thousands of years. While the USDA may classify the horse as livestock, many Americans consider the horse to be something more along the lines of a companion animal. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
