After leaving Apple, Steve Jobs bought a company by the name of Pixar. The original plan for his company called for separate buildings and offices. Still, he decided to change it around, and he designed the space for his company in such a way to provide a large open space in the center where the coffee bar, and cafeteria, and other things like the mailboxes were located. This philosophy of design brought the employees together. Steve's idea blossomed into a place for people to collaborate and cultivate ideas, solutions and build relationships. People would run into each other and make eye contact - in doing so, things happen. This is when true collaboration takes place. Working with others is one of the most important ways to develop ideas and solutions to problems creatively. "The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the Body of Christ." Case: Zappos Employees Do More Than Sell Shoes
It’s hard to imagine not being able to buy a pair of shoes online. It’s even harder to imagine not owning a pair of shoes at all. The founders and employees at Zappos are familiar with both situations. Co-founder and CEO Tony Hsieh got Zappos off the ground in 1999 when he and other investors realized that nowhere on the Internet could consumers find a real selection of shoes. You know how successful Zappos has become since then, despite subsequent competition—but you might not be aware of the company’s efforts to give back to its community, including giving shoes away to children in need.
Zappos engages in social responsibility initiatives because “we feel that it’s the right thing to do,” explains Shannon Roy, the company’s Happiness Hippie (her job title). The company develops relationships with charitable organizations that are similar to those it builds with customers and vendors, looking for ways that employees can interact directly with the community through these organizations. Some of the broad areas in which Zappos offers assistance are poverty and education, cancer research and care, and pets and nature. Specific efforts include partnerships with charitable organizations, such as Goodie Two Shoes, a foundation that provides new shoes and socks to children in crisis or need. Through its Goodie Two Shoes Giveaway each year, the organization teams up with Zappos and other firms to donate and distribute thousands of footwear products to children who need them. “It’s giving back to the community,” says Shannon Roy, who adds that Zappos employees feel driven to participate. “It’s part of our being, part of our culture, it’s very inherent in what Zappos is all about.” Working at Zappos is “grander than the 9 to 5 job. It’s doing something for the greater good.”
It would be easy for an online retailer like Zappos to set up shop anywhere and ignore its surroundings. But that’s not Zappos. Instead, the firm made a deal to renovate the vacant Las Vegas City Hall for $40 million, bringing about 2,000 employees to downtown Las Vegas—an area that could use an economic and social boost. CEO Tony Hsieh admits that originally he thought about building a “dream corporate campus,” much like those of Apple, Google, and Nike. But when the Las Vegas opportunity came along, Hsieh and other Zappos managers thought: “Let’s not be like the other companies. Let’s not be insular and only care about our employees. MACPA/BLI Makes the Shift Change - Cloud and Open, Collaborative Office
On September 19, 2014, MACPA/BLI moved into its new open, collaborative office space as part of its strategy to make the "shift change" and begin its transformation to a more nimble association capable of innovating in order to keep our members and clients ahead of the "shift change".

People use the term “modern” in a variety of ways, often very loosely, with a lot of implied associations of new, contemporary, up-to-date, and technological. We know the difference between a modern society and one that remains tied to the past and it usually has less to do with art and more to do with technology and industrial progress, things like indoor plumbing, easy access to consumer goods, freedom of expression, and voting rights. In the 19th century, however, modernity and its connection with art had certain specific associations that people began recognizing and using as barometers to distinguish themselves and their culture from earlier nineteenth century ways and attitudes.
Chronologically, Modernism refers to the period from 1850 to 1960. It begins with the Realist movement and ends with Abstract Expressionism. That’s just a little over one hundred years. During that period the western world experienced some significant changes that transformed Europe and the United States from traditional societies that were agriculturally based into modern ones with cities and factories and mass transportation.
Here are some important features that all modern societies share.
Capitalism
Capitalism replaced landed fortunes and became the economic system of modernity in which people exchanged labor for a fixed wage and used their wages to buy ever more consumer items rather than produce such items themselves. This economic change dramatically affected class relations because it offered opportunities for great wealth through individual initiative, industrialization and technology—somewhat like the technological and dot.com explosion of the late 20th and early 21st century. The industrial revolution which began in England in the late 18th century and rapidly swept across Europe (hit the U.S. immediately following the Civil War) transformed economic and social relationships, offered an ever increasing number of cheaper consumer goods, and changed notions of education. Who needed the classics when a commercial/technically oriented education was the key to financial success? The industrial revolution also fostered a sense of competition and progress that continues to influence us today.
Urban culture
Urban culture replaced agrarian culture as industrialization and cities grew. Cities were the sites of new wealth and opportunity with their factories and manufacturing potential..

- 1. After leaving Apple, Steve Jobs bought a company by the name of Pixar. The original plan for his company called for separate buildings and offices. Still, he decided to change it around, and he designed the space for his company in such a way to provide a large open space in the center where the coffee bar, and cafeteria, and other things like the mailboxes were located. This philosophy of design brought the employees together. Steve's idea blossomed into a place for people to collaborate and cultivate ideas, solutions and build relationships. People would run into each other and make eye contact - in doing so, things happen. This is when true collaboration takes place. Working with others is one of the most important ways to develop ideas and solutions to problems creatively. "The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the Body of Christ."
