What they discovered was that girls and women are exposed to an almost constant barrage of media messages that only certain body types are beautiful and that to appear less than model-thin calls for extreme measures such as the digital alteration of photographs. The sisters devised an idea they called “Beauty Redefined,” which aimed to promote healthy body image and self-esteem among girls and to challenge the popular media’s unrealistic female images. They soon discovered the benefits of networking and found potential partners in unexpected places—such as the makers of Dove products—who shared their goals. The sisters concluded that the partnerships they forged were their most important asset in spreading their message. Why are partnerships so important to public health programs? Partnerships are integral to advocacy and funding. When reaching out to others for help in building a public health program, consider both private and public partnerships. Research has shown that high-capacity coalitions are more successful in effecting community change. But what does “high capacity” mean? Evaluators have developed tools to provide an answer, but documentation is scarce regarding how they are implemented, how the results are used, and whether they predict coalition success in collaborative community change efforts. This breakfast talk will focus on a coalition assessment tool designed by Innovation Network to assess changes in coalition capacity over time. Developed for a health promotion initiative of the Kansas Health Foundation, this tool is designed to assess coalition progress in seven key areas across twelve different community coalitions, over the course of a four-year initiative. The Innovation Network team will share lessons learned from the first year of the initiative about developing and deploying the assessment tool, as well as what these tools can—and can’t—tell us about a coalition’s capacity to conduct community change work. Social Media Outreach. This deck provides an overview of how to develop an online grass roots campaign, with an emphasis on the tactics and strategies employed by Bloggers Unite. Bloggers Unite was one of the first social action campaigns ever developed as a pro-bono cooperative effort for organizations such as Amnesty International, March of Dimes, The Gesundheit Institute, and AIDS.gov. among others. While the focus of the case study relies heavily on the Human Rights campaign developed for Amnesty International, the techniques used by this approach also benefited several smaller, hyper-local efforts as well. The deck is presented as a supplement and course outline for a class taught by Richard Becker, ABC, president of Copywrite, Ink., at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Becker developed the social outreach campaign for all Bloggers Unite benefactors and others. The campaign was then coordinated as a joint-effort by his team, the nonprofit, and the fastest-growing blogger network at the time. KAPLAN AND MICHAEL PORTER Introductory Incident Two-Way Communication and Competitive Advantage Health care organizations are notorious for one-way communication. When communicating with patients and communities, health care organizations typically employ traditional techniques such as broadcast advertising, distribution of educational materials prepared for a variety of audiences, and similar methods. A few organizations, however, have recognized the possibilities created by social media and understand that health is extremely personal and materials prepared for mass audiences rarely address the unique concerns of individual patients. Moreover, when patients must access the 127 128 health care system they are unprepared for the experience, lost in the confusion of the high-technology environment of health care, and grasping for information. Social media has done much to change this situation. Patients can easily communicate with people across the globe, share common experiences and fears, discover the personal experiences faced by others, and access all types of medical information. Unfortunately, many health care organizations choose to use social media as just another means of one-way communication. In some cases most of the organization's posts are designed to promote the hospital or medical practice rather than address patient issues and concerns. A few organizations, recognizing this temptation, develop policies that “no more than a certain percentage” of posts can be used for promotion purposes. At Inova Health System an effort is made to ensure that 80–90 percent of its posts address patient health rather than promoting the System. Inova has made serious attempts to use social media effectively. It has created Facebook communities in specific areas such as wellness, pediatric care, bariatric surgery, and so on. Attempts are made to encourage users to trust Inova as a supplier of valuable health information. Information can be shared about the System but only after trust is built and the interests of the organization are consistent with the interests of the communities. It is essential to remember why social media is important. The goal is to connect with friends and build communities around common interests and to share information better and faster. Furthermore, communicating poorly is almost as bad as not communicating. The quality of posts is more important than the quantity. Because real-time communication is so exciting we frequently confuse social media overuse with proper use. The sponsorship of some children is sometimes falsified and it is always based on false information that may be provided to the sponsor. This shows that the sponsors are sometimes made to believe that there contribution is being given directly to the children under sponsorship yet the funds are for the whole community. Corruption at local levels is also a problem to the world vision because most of the funds that are supposed to help the poor are diverted and given to those who are able due to corruption hence it seizes to be beneficial to the targeted group. Political conflicts also affect the world vision, the procedures are sometimes not followed and therefore aid is given to some people who can be felt to be of benefit to a particular person or group of persons (Roth, 2015). These problems are caused by increased poverty especially in developing countries and people work not to benefit the community but to benefit themselves. Greed is another cause to the problem where an individual cannot be contented with what he or she receives from servicing. Lack of knowledge and awareness of community is another reason that makes the organization staff not to fear providing false information because the community members can rarely defend themselves. Mostly the organization staff is the one that causes the problems by exaggerating or falsifying information. In order to solve this problem the world vision should at least ensure that the living condition of the staff providing service to the community is good to avoid temptation of using the fund. The community should also be taught about the organization and its importance to the community. There should be frequent communication between the sponsors and sponsored to ensure that funds are used as expected (Roth, 2015).
