1. According to a research done by the Harvard University, a fullsearch requests done on the search engine Google, produce asmuch carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle of water. Every time youdo a search requests on Google, it produces 7 grams of CO2. In total there are 200 million search requests done on Google every day, that's1,400,000 kg of carbon dioxide every day. Google replied to this research by claiming that every search request would just produce 0,2 gram of carbon dioxide. And, if you do the math's , that's just 40,000 kg of carbon dioxide every day. A recent research, done by the research firm Gartner, claimed that IT causes 2 percent of global emissions nowadays.. Previously, it has been calculated that worldwide 8.3 megawatt hours could be saved, if the home page of Google would be black instead of white 9/25/2010 1 AND HOW DO YOU REACT TO THAT!

6. 9/25/2010 5 Approaches to Green computing: Virtualization Power management Material recycling
7. 9/25/2010 6 VIRTUALIZATION VIRTUALISATION IS THE PROCESS OF RUNNING TWO OR MORE LOGICAL COMPUTER SYSTEMS ON ONE SET OF HARDWARE , MINIMISING POWER AND COOLING CONSUMPTION.
8. With virtualization, a system administrator could combine several physical systems into virtual machines on one single, powerful system, thereby unplugging the original hardware and reducing power and cooling consumption. Storage virtualization uses hardware and software to break the link between an application, application component, system service or whole stack of software and the storage subsystem. Revolutionized Data centers power efficiency. 9/25/2010 7 Concept Of Virtualization:

10. Video card: A fast GPU may be the largest power consumer in a computer. Energy efficient display options include: •No video card - use a shared terminal, shared thin client, or desktop sharing software if display required. •Use motherboard video output •Reuse an older video card that uses little power many do not require heat sinks or fans . •Select a GPU based on average wattage of performance per watt. LCDS: 66% more efficient than the CRTS. 9/25/2010 9 Displays:
11. Consider that the average computer lifespan is about 2 years. Between 1997 and 2004, it is estimated that 315 million computers became obsolete (and were discarded, donated, or recycled) 183 million computers were sold in 2004. New users in China (178 million by 2010) and India (80 million by 2010) will require the creation of new computers Disposal of these devices constituted 20-50 million tons per year (about 5% of the total waste of the planet) This waste is called e-waste. where are we going to put all of it? 9/25/2010 Concerns:The fills are filled 10
12. Reuse: donate your computer components to people who may not have or have lesser quality computers. Refurbish: rather than discarding your computer when the next generation is released, just get a new CPU and memory chips – upgrade rather than replace. Are there adequate incentives to do either of the above? Do computer companies encourage refurbishing/upgrading? 9/25/2010 11 Solution to e-waste:
13. If companies can recycle the plastics and other components, this can greatly reduce waste and toxins however, the hazardous materials in e-waste can harm the recycle workers if they are not properly protected Developed countries now have facilities for recycling e-waste however, in Europe, the plastics are discarded instead of recycled because the flame retardant chemicals are too toxic to work with To resolve these problems, the computer manufacturers must start using recyclable chemicals 9/25/2010 12 ANOTHER SOLUTION:RECYCLING
14. Develop a sustainable green computing plan. Reduce-Re use-Recycle. Make environmentally sound purchase decision. Reduce paper consumption. Use e-mails, electronic-archiving, track changes in electronic documents. Conserve energy. 9/25/2010 13 GO GREEN : THE BASIC 5 STEPS
22. ZONBU COMPUTERS Energy efficient pc. Consumes one third of power of typical light bulb. Contains no moving parts. It runs the Linux operating system. Cost is only $99 with a two years subscription signed. 9/25/2010 18
23. Turn off the computer when not in use, even if just for an hour Turn off the monitor when not in use (as opposed to running a screen saver) Use power saver mode In power saver mode, the top item is not necessary, but screen savers use as much electricity as any normal processing, and the screen saver is not necessary on a flat panel display Use hardware/software with the Energy Star label Energy Star is a “seal of approval” by the Energy Star organization of the government (the EPA) Don’t print unless necessary and you are ready Use LCDs instead of CRTs as they are more power efficient. 9/25/2010 19 You can help!
24. consumers haven't cared about ecological impact when buying computers, they've cared only about speed and price. Become pickier about being green. The greenest computer will not miraculously fall from the sky one day; it’ll be the product of years of improvements. The features of a green computer of tomorrow would be like: efficiency, manufacturing & materials, recyclability, service model, self-powering. Green computers will break down the 'digital divide', the electronic gulf that separates the information rich from the information poor 9/25/2010 20 MY TAKE ON GREEN COMPUTING:
