Isle Of Dogs
As to be expected, Director Wes Anderson once again delivers a masterfully crafted stop–motion
animation film Isle of Dogs with distinctive style and striking visuals. Anderson captures the spirit
of each canine character behavior with palpable affection and a careful eye for detail while
addressing ideas of fear and aggression with underlying messages about distrust of the government
and public resistance. Isle of Dogs is an artful masterpiece of skillful word building that lures
viewers into the story with aplomb.
From beginning to end, Isle of Dogs is told like a fable with surprising soberness and brutal honesty;
the nostalgia of the film persists throughout despite it's setting twenty years in the future. The film is

Fox (2007). In true Wes Anderson fashion, every shot is breathtakingly beautiful, captivating, and
absolutely necessary to the film, with a unique style and stunning visuals not dissimilar to that of
Blade Runner 2049 (which won an Academy Award for its amazing cinematography). The copious
amounts of perfectly balanced shots in this film exhibits Anderson's love of symmetry, which
contrasts with the endearing rough–around–the–edges quality of the stop–motion animation. Each
setting has its unique tone and feeling, yet stays consistent with the film's overall theme. Every
detail is included with immaculate precision and care, from discarded water bottles that catch the
light like precious gemstones to each blade of grass billowing in the wind; this dissonant beauty and
almost grotesque imagery is very prominent in Isle of Dogs. Best of all are the fight scenes, which
devolve into cotton–cloud puffs of dust and flailing

Hayao Miyazaki and Japanese Animation Essay
Hayao Miyazaki Hayao Miyazaki has been revolutionary in Japanese animation. A mangaka (an
artist/writer/creator of manga, Japanese comics), an animator, and storyteller, Miyazaki has not only
been very successful in his work, well known and loved by many, but has changed the world of
anime with his unique style of drawing. Through passion and hard work, Miyazaki has become one
of the most successful animators in all of Japan. Miyazaki was born on January 5th, 1941, in Tokyo,
Japan (MUBI.com). His father, Katsuji Miyazaki, was the director and owner of their family's firm,
Miyazaki Airplane, that made parts for Zero fighter planes. His father's job contributed to his

2: 344–345) Manga grew in popularity in Japan while he was still in high school, and he decided he
wanted to be a comic artist. While animation was regaining its popularity in the postwar years, he
saw Legend of the White Serpent by Taji Yabushita, the first Japanese colour animated movie, and
he absolutely fell in love with the feature. After graduating from Toyotama High School (1959) he
went on to enroll in Gakushuin University, where he studied political science and economics. While
he was there, he studied European childrens books and comics after joining a children's literature
research society, things by authors like Rosemary Sutcliff and Antoine du Saint–Exupery. In 1963,
he finally graduated with a degree in political science and economics, but instead of moving into the
fields of politics or finance, he promptly went to get a job at the animation studio of Toei Company,
Toei Cine, where he had an apprenticeship before he was allowed to work as an entry–level in–
betweener on Watchdog Woof–Woof and Wolf Boy Ken (an in–betweener takes the first and last
frames of the action or movement drawn by the animator and creates the flow, the series of
picutres/sketches in between the two to connect them and complete the movement or action). He
was a hard, dedicated worker, with a passion for what he does, and so he quickly climbed up to
positions with more and more responsibility in the animation industry. Wolf

to take care of his younger sister after losing their home in an American bombing during WWII. He
is very talented at capturing the audience's emotions in his movies. Toshio Suzuki was born August

Asahi Geino Magazine before becoming an editor of Animage in 1978. In fact, he met Hayao
Miyazaki when he created the Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind manga. Suzuki was so impressed

Hiroshima And Nagazaki's Effect On Japan
The film Akira was produced at the year 1988, while the first part of the manga for Akira was
released in Decemeber 1982 and the manga was serialised in the pages of Weekly Young Jump
Magazine from 1982 to 1990. Katsuhiro Otomo inspiration for the film Akira comes from some of
the western film, such as Bonnie and Clyde. Katsuhiro Otomo was given with a huge budget of $11
million to bring Akira to the screen. Katsuhiro Otomo then proceeds producing Akira with 70
animators. 327 colours were used in the film, which include 50 specially created colour and in total
of 97 shades of red. With over 160,000 cels, Akira was produced with a smooth, realistic and
convincing animation.

History depicts that Japan had gone through periods of rebuilding. By seeing into Japan's culture, it
seems like it is true in terms of Japan's layered past and representation of new media. At the year
1945, Hiroshima and Nagazaki were levelled by the atomic bomb dropped by the United State, and
this catastrophic event would have shape the nation over time. However, the Japanese has not
simply forgotten about it, but the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagazaki seems to have given the
Japanese a new meaning with the newer generation today. The word of atomic bomb to most of the
people meant death and destruction, but at the same time it can also mean rebirth or hope for the
future. Hence the concept of death and rebirth had become common theme in Japanese anime.
The concept of rebirth can be seen the film Akira. Akira took place after the World War III, Tokyo
has been rebuilt into a new city called "Neo–Tokyo", since at the start of the film Tokyo was
destroyed by Akira. Neo–Tokyo is presented to the audience as a glowing city that filled neon lights
and higher technology. Some people may see Akira as a tech noir genre film, according to what
John Treat stated, "paradoxical genre that excoriates technology at the same time as its sophisticated
special effects are implicit celebrations of technological achievement" (Contemporary Japan and

The 's The Circle Of Life
It's the circle of life.
The generation that grew up with "The Lion King" movie as children, get to experience the
television reboot as adults.
Although the television show is meant for kids, it's more than likely that adults will be interested in
the show just to see what everyone in the Pride Lands is up too.
Samuel Morin, 3rd year animation student at Sheridan, was lucky enough to work on it.
"I feel like I've come full circle with Lion King. I grew up being absolutely obsessed with Lion King
and so the fact that they would kind of reboot it and that I get the opportunity to work on the first
episode (and other episodes after that) its just crazy," said Morin. I'm not a big believer it fate, but of
all the Disney movies that I loved growing up, this is the one I was most obsessed with and that I am
now getting to work on it"
The television show Lion Guard is based on the 1994 "The Lion King." It'll premiere first as an hour
long episode called The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar, and will continue as a regular television
series later in the year on the Disney channel. The first episode will be released in November and
the rest of the series is expected in early 2016.
In the show we get to meet Nala's and Simba's second–born son Kion and his friends who create a
group to protect the Pride Lands. There are also returning characters.

Spirited Away
Viewing Hiyao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" for the third time, I was struck by a quality between
generosity and love. On earlier viewings I was caught up by the boundless imagination of the story.
This time I began to focus on the elements in the picture that didn't need to be there. Animation is a
painstaking process, and there is a tendency to simplify its visual elements. Miyazaki, in contrast,
offers complexity. His backgrounds are rich in detail, his canvas embraces space liberally, and it is
all drawn with meticulous attention. We may not pay much conscious attention to the corners of the
frame, but we know they are there, and they reinforce the remarkable precision of his fantasy
worlds.
"Spirited Away" is surely one of the finest of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That is why it plays so powerfully for adult viewers. Movies made for "everybody" are actually
made for nobody in particular. Movies about specific characters in a detailed world are spellbinding
because they make no attempt to cater to us; they are defiantly, triumphantly, themselves. As I
watched the film again, I was spellbound as much as by any film I consider great. That helps explain
why "Spirited Away" grossed more than "Titanic" in Japan, and was the first foreign film in history
to open in the U. S. having already made more than $200 million.
I was so fortunate to meet Miyazaki at the 2002 Toronto film festival. I told him I love the
"gratuitous motion" in his films; instead of every movement being dictated by the story, sometimes
people will just sit for a moment, or sigh, or gaze at a running stream, or do something extra, not to
advance the story but only to give the sense of time and place and who they are.
"We have a word for that in Japanese," he said. "It's called 'ma.' Emptiness. It's there intentionally."
He clapped his hands three or four times. "The time in between my clapping is 'ma.' If you just have

The Film Mulan
Disney Film: Mulan
This one of a kind Disney film "Mulan" (Bancrofty and Cook, 1998) draws an innovative path for
Disney's animation studio. It mixes the traditional elements such as with a brave heroine and those
cute animal sidekicks. The material appears to be more adventuresome and grown up. Similar to
Fox's "Anastasia," Mulan is known as a film from which not just children but also adults can enjoy
on their own, devoid of feeling an obligation in taking along with their children.
In terms of the story, it tells the time as not a retread of a recognizable Western children's classic,
however on the basis of a Chinese folk fiction concerning a brave Chinese teenage girl who covers
up herself as a boy to have fought by the assaulting Huns. By the time the invaders along with their
pitiless leader named Shan–Yu, who then was looking like Karl Malone in an alarming way sweep
down on the Chinese Wall, capable men were called by the Emperor in order to combat for a
defense for the kingdom.
The father of Mulan in this film emphasizes being old and weak. However, he throws away his
crutch to make a voluntary effort. In order for his father be granted of his personal desire, Mulan on
its best has stolen the family sword, summons the family ancestors for aid, and clandestinely went to
his place. As a matter of fact, Mulan defies not merely for get–together, nevertheless on the desire of
her family to let him stand for by the plans of a matchmaker and marrying whomever Mulan

The Importance Of Japanese Animation
Over the years, Japanese animation have gain more attention from the public than before. Japanese
animation, also widely known as anime, dominates most of the animation that exists in today's
media. Much of its popularity originates from Studio Ghibli's movies and classics, such as Astro
Boy, One Piece, and Pokémon. These anime movies and series allowed anime to gain attention from
the world as it revealed a different level of animation. However, anime was not at first well received
by the Japanese people along with other foreign countries. Due to the fact that some anime
displayed an amount of violence that ruined the specific purpose of animation. Since it carried a
negative connotation, anime had only gained more popularity during the 20th century. In addition,
many people learned that anime's audience were not just children, as young teens and adults
indulged in anime as well. At the same time, anime displayed a variety of genres that differ from
animation that strive to connect with children. Compared to any animation that is created children,
anime strives to incorporated different concepts and ideas that reflect today's political, social,
historical, and economic situation. Nevertheless, this paper will analyze how anime plays a role in
people's life as they consume it. Anime has given many people a collective identity that helps them
identify themselves with the anime and its elements that defined it. Anime is not same as animation

Racism Present In Disney/Pixar Films. For Many Parents,
Racism Present in Disney/Pixar Films For many parents, these Disney/Pixar movies are something
nice they can show to their children, they grew up on many of them and they wish to share this joy
with their kids as well. If one was to walk up and tell them "These movies are fairly racist, you
should show them to your children lest they get the wrong idea!" in most cases, they will find them
to be just a closet nutcase and ignore that like it never happened. Society and these movies have
conditioned the people so much that people cannot even identify the racism present, because when
they see it, those cases are not seen in there head as unnatural but the opposite so then it fades into
the background and unless asked to focus they probably ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This movie was mostly made to try to make those who were upset with urban life, more specifically
whites who were upset, to leave it behind and join the plantation life (Terry, 471–2). This movie was
more for the white audience, making the black slaves who are living on the plantation out to be
happy, and that it's the dream place to be. This was of course not how it really was, it was a much
darker situation then, especially for the "happy" blacks. The lead actor himself could not even come
to watch his own movie, due to the segregation laws in place during that period. One common type
of propaganda done by the media is usually dehumanizing the enemies during war times or just
during times of tension between multiple countries. Usually it is newspaper comics or other similar
media outlets, but what some people probably did not know if Disney made a few as well. They had
made some during conflicts with Germany and Japan. A few examples would be such as "Der
Fuehrer's Face (1943)", "Commando Duck (1944)", and Education of Death (1943)" which made
the Axis enemies look like brainless fools (Young). The Japanese soldiers depicted in "Commando
Duck" had weird glasses, giant buck teeth, and spoke in broken English while saying to each other
"Its Japanese custom to shoot enemy in back".

Stop Motion Animation
Stop motion animation: Stop motion animation is when you take a picture of something, move it
ever so slightly (depending on how smooth you want the sequence to be) then take another picture
and so on and so on. The sequence of pictures will create an illusion of a moving image. When
creating a stop motion animation it can either be done traditionally or a computer can be used to
generate the background sets. Examples of stop–motion animation on TV are commonly children's
shows such as Morph, Shaun the sheep, Bagpuss, The Clangers, Noddy and Wallace and Gromit's
World of Invention. The advantage of stop motion animation is that you can be creative because
there aren't many limitations on what you can do with an object like you do in real life. The
disadvantage is that it's very time consuming and extremely laborious and you have to make sure
the camera's still because one little slip up shows very clearly.
Clay animation: It is similar to stop motion animation however using clay. It works by capturing
each frame and then playing the recorded shots to see a live action. Clay animation films were
created in the 1908's, however it's in 1916 that it started to become popular overseas. Each clay
character is produced by using a wire and clay, the wire is called an armature. The disadvantage of
clay is that it's very fragile therefor when producing and shooting the characters and objects must

Japanese Culture In Japan
Japanese culture is filled with creativity, especially in Tokyo. The best way to describe Tokyo is to
compare it to New York. In America New York is the heart of fashion, business and music. Basically
it was the place to be or go to if you wanted your dreams to come true. Tokyo is a mirror of these
themes for the Japanese people. One of the attractions in Tokyo specifically is Anime. The first
generations to begin Anime started in the late 1910's. From then on Anime has become the core
content to view one of the most famous animated series in the world. Especially since Anime started
in Japan, it's very likely that you'll see a lot of the Japanese culture within every animated piece.
Two animated movies that have been greatly obsessed with not only in Japan, but also all around the
world are Akira and Michiko & Hatchin. Both movies were created by two different director who
rose in the Anime popularity not so far from one another. Katsuhiro Otomo was the director who
created Akira which was published in 1988, and Sayo Yamamoto was the director who created
Michiko & Hatchin. With animation being a competitive field where directors are trying to create
the most critically acclaimed filmed, some of the factors that are often ignored is whether the
director was a male or female. If you were to watch these movies one after the other you would be
amazed with the overall results of each one, but what is it that makes one movie better than the other
and how does it play an effect.

Anime In America Research Paper
Everyone knows each project has a process no matter how long or short it may be, with that said this
will be a deep analysis on my project: Anime in America. I chose a topic revolving around anime
mainly because I watch it and I wanted to do my project on something I found interesting. Another
reason for my choice in topics is because I already knew about some of the things revolving around
my thesis, my thesis being how America's encounter resulted in a sanitized, non–stereotyped and
easily accessible form of media. Even though I had background information on my topic,
researching it gave me material I could build upon and use to support the reasons behind my thesis.
Now that you know the topic that this project is based on, it would probably be important for you to
know where most of my information was derived from. Most the information used in this project
came from my own background knowledge and the internet. Background knowledge on this topic
was especially useful since it helped with figuring out what to focus on and building ideas. The
format I chose for presenting my topic was the performance format due to the well–executed
examples I've seen. Another reason for my choice in format was an Anime where at the end of each

My Personality Group Through Human Metrics
Over the course of this assignment; I have discovered much about myself. Likewise, I probably
would not have learned this much about myself or my career, had I not taken this course. Such as
how I have found my personality group through Human metrics; which presented that I was within
the INFJ grouping (Jung, 1998). I was also able to learn much more about the career that I may be
pursuing in the future, as well as the people in the field similar to it. The Jungian personality test
showed that my personality type, the INFP, is a mediator (Jung, 1998). The website claims that
INFJs are idealistic, future–oriented, as well as creative. The possible careers listed on the website
are psychologists, artists, and child care/ teachers (BSM, 2016). These results show some correlation
to my own personality, as I am aspiring to be an artist. I am also very future–oriented and I would
like to perceive myself as being rather creative. Another trait that I relate with would be how INFJs
would typically value deep and authentic relationships with others. I enjoy harmony with others and
predictable schedules. Such an example would be how I tend to eat dinner with friends around 6pm
every night and do homework afterwards, as well as have the classes at the appropriate times
throughout the week. The consistency of the schedule allows me to plan ahead without feeling too
much stress, which may result in some errors along the way. As a child, I was always fascinated

Thank You for Our Project, Jessica
Hello again Jessica. I know I haven't exactly been keeping my promises on the due dates and I'm
only fortifying the stigma that I touched on in my last email but I've still got a few questions. (Did
you get my last email, by the way?) Anyway, would you just like me to submit what I have? I have
well over two minutes and way more than five angles. Sound has also been added and mixed. The
entire movie, however, is not finished. It should give you enough to grade or at least be a worthy
placeholder until I can really submit a product I'm not totally disappointing with. I know it may be
hard to even fathom what could possibly be taking so long but I've been mulling over several other
things regarding this project.
One of the reasons I can't seem to get anywhere and one of the areas I'm constantly getting hung up
on is the nature and tone of the project itself.
I wanted to establish a sort of creepy and unsettling mood for the project and I can't achieve what I
was originally visioning in my head. Some of the animations employed simply seem to make their
scene seem frivolous, silly, and awkward. I may spend up to an hour or two just trying to figure out
how to make the seemingly insignificant feel "right."
Another issue that I'm having is that there are several frame rate and "frame jump" mishaps that
have occurred during the initial picture taking. Sometimes the character will "jump" from one shot
to another and, subsequently, the scene appears

Stop Motion Animation
Stop–motion animation requires the shooting of physically manipulated still objects to appear as
moving objects.
Some use dolls, props or clay (also known as called Claymation) to sequentially move an object in
between individually shot frames.
Depending on the preference of the director, stop–motion animation may also require either
traditional or computer animation to supplement the movie's other visual requirements such as the

Examples of stop–motion animation on TV are commonly children's shows such as Morph, Shaun

'Misfit Lit': comics and graphic novels
How do story telling techniques in Japanese comic media differ to the western tradition?
The differences between the Eastern, Anime and Manga and the Western, Comic and Cartoon
counterparts are clear from the outset. Apart from the obvious contrast in styles, there are many
more distinctions that can be made between the two.
The words Anime and Manga refer to two separate and distinct, but interrelated things. The word
Anime is used to describe Animation of Japan, similar to the animation made popular in America,
by companies like Walt Disney. The word Manga is used to describe the Comic Books of Japan,

They are designed to be an escape from the harsh world of reality from which we all want to protect
our children.
It is also a strange phenomenon that almost all feature length animation by Americans are musicals.
Rousing musical numbers designed to excite the senses in a multimedia experience. Hardly any
other popular medium except animation has made a successful musical in the last 20 years.
Animation in America on the most part is strictly for kids. No one dies, no one gets hurt. The evil
villain's plans are defeated, but the villain himself escapes to hatch new villainy in the next episode.
One great difference between Japanese and American TV Series is that the Japanese TV Series are
designed to last only one or two seasons, 13 or 26 episodes and then come to a climactic and
definite ending
Recently however several American cartoons have broken the mould and chosen to tackle real world
problems and issues, while still maintaining a cartoon persona. Cartoons like The Simpson's, Family
Guy, South Park or Spawn have come to the forefront and some have even been labeled for a mature
audience. The ways these cartoons depict society is interesting in itself. The primary way in which
all these shows display their message is by obvious exaggerations of reality. The Simpson's and
South Park highlight some of the more colorful examples of American family life. The series Spawn

I don't think you need to be embarrassed about that. (We both laughed.)
No, it's funny. I will literally sometimes binge on a cartoon the way someone might binge on a

been in the Japanese cartoons and their storylines. Just wild worlds 'cause I think there's something
really cool about an animation series––if you're going to make a prime time TV series––they're
getting pretty close with CGI these days, but with a cartoon, the director can say, "I literally want all
this insane stuff to happen," and they can just make it happen. They wouldn't have to worry about

helpless as some might imagine the "damsel–in–distress" character to be, but she is constantly
victimized (helplessly raped twice by two different enemy demons) and is saved a countless number
of times by
Jubei. Sure enough, in the end, she falls in love with Jubei, the only man to ever steal her heart.
The third main character type is "the enemy". The "head" antagonist, usually male, is a hideous
monster in horror anime, and in action anime almost always possesses supernatural powers. He
seems much more invincible and usually batters in the climax, but he always has a weakness for the
hero to capitalize on. He is impure, immoral, unethical and, in short, evil. His heart has no remorse
for his actions and for those suffering from them. The enemy, like the hero, is unknown to us and is
gradually introduced throughout the story. The enemy of this story is Himuro Gemma. Gemma is a
bisexual, immortal human with the ability to reincarnate himself. In his early days, he caused Jubei
and his friends to turn on each other, forcing Jubei to kill them. He poisons an entire village, and
with the help of his henchmen, plans to take over an already dark army of ninjas.

The Meaning Of The Fate Apocrypha Poster From A-1 Pictures
Art is different for each individual. There are those who believe that art only includes high class
paintings made by people from high social order like Michelangelo or Francisco Goya. There are
also those who believe anything can be considered art, not just paintings but songs, movies, and
even video games. But while everybody has different opinions what art can be, everyone
understands that art has some meaning behind it. On this passage below, I will be demonstrating the
meaning behind "Fate Apocrypha" poster from A–1 Pictures. A–1 Pictures is an entertainment
company that animates stories from light novels to manga. While they do not actually create stories
themselves, the publish stories that can have a light hearted theme to emotional themes. Since they
publish numerous stories per year, they strive to have each story be as developed and lucid as
possible. Their ultimate goal in doing all of this is to attract a huge number of audiences to their
shows in hopes of increasing sales and views. A–1 Pictures created this poster in order to attract
people who are interested in watching genres that are the action–fantasy. To be able to portray the
action genre, the background is drawn that displayed some sort of conflict. The background
displayed a dead tree, ashes, burning building, and embers flying around. The dead tree signified
that the land itself was dying. The burning buildings signify the destruction of humanity. The ashes
are covering most of the poster which gives the idea that the land has been burning for a long time.
With all the destruction on the background, the main focus of the poster is the picture of two
determined and strong looking characters. Since the characters looks determined and strong while
there is chaos all around them, the audience can tell that the story will not be focused on the
hardships of war but on the fights that happen in battle. To portray the fantasy portion of the story,
the two characters are wearing completely different clothing. The male character seems to be
wearing a suit and vest which is common to the present day era, while the female character is
wearing armor which was common to the medieval era. This indicates that the genre is fantasy

The Negative Impact Of Eroticism In Japanese Animation
While violence attributed to either technological fusion or natural depiction is a great cause of
concern for most critics of anime, it does not compare to the outrage visited upon Japanese
animation on the basis of sexually explicit content. According to Hinton (2014), the greatest concern
for most critics of anime is the constant depiction of underage girls in sexually suggesting situations
and scenes. This is especially true for Japanese animation subgenres such as hentai, lolicon and
rorikon. Accordingly, Hinton (2014) suggests that western media in particular is often outraged by
images of scantily dressed underage girls in Japanese animation. The reality of the matter, according
to Hinton, is that Japanese culture as a whole seems to tolerate this sexual depiction because their
culture has in the past permitted the prostitution of underage, school going girls by older me for
financial gain (Hinton, 2014). In this regard, Hinton (2014) suggests that eroticism in Japanese
animation is largely influenced by two key factors; fantasy and purity or innocence, which when
combined often have the net effect of distorting human nature.
The Negative Impact of Violence and Eroticism in Japanese Animation on Teenagers There exists,
among proponents of Japanese animation, the notion that an individual can exists both in the fantasy
world of anime, and the real world. This is shown by Yui (2010), who states that those who

The Fireflies ( 1988 ) Directed By Isao Takahata And Waltz...
In America, most animated movies incite young audiences. The funny characters and feel–good
script entertain children and also gives them moral lessons along the way. The same cannot be said
for international films such as Grave of the Fireflies (1988) directed by Isao Takahata and Waltz
with Bashir (2008) directed by Ari Folman. These animated films contrast each other, not only
cinematically, but in the plotline as well. Wars replay over the main characters in each film, both
inside and outside the war itself. The difference between civilians and soldiers, color and grayscale,
dreams and reality create films which mesmerize the adult audience. Both anime and comic–book
animation soften the audience's overwhelming emotions when facing the realities brought by war
and help story–tellers create scenes with a specific purpose. The animation used in Grave of the
Fireflies provides child–like imagination during World War II. Set in Japan, the plot follows two
children torn away from their parents and struggling to survive on their own. By using anime, the
children's harsh conditions seem unreal, yet powerful. If the director, or producers, used real actors
and actresses to create Grave of the Fireflies, then the audience would find Setsuko and Seita's
situation harder to swallow. Seeing real people ripped from their families and starving on the streets
forces people to accept other realities different from their own. American audiences see how the air

In Orientalism, Edward Said claims that, "as much as the West itself, the Orient is an idea that has a
history and a tradition of thought, imagery, and vocabulary that have given it reality and presence in
and for the West" (5). The complex network of political, economical, academic, cultural, or
geographical realities of the Orient called "Orientalism" is a way of coming to terms with the Orient,

In other words, not only construction but deconstruction of the dubious entity "Orient" require the
West (the Orient's agent) to speak for the Orient. Another problem is what Said calls "a triumph of
Orientalism" (323) today, the major source of which is no longer Britain or France, but the United
States, the democratically totalizing economy power. It means cultural domination on the one hand
("Orientals" educated in the United States repeat the Orientalist cliché), and economic absorption of
poor nations on the other (consumerism in the Orient). A simple example Said takes up is "the
paradox of an Arab regarding himself as an 'Arab' of the sort put out by Hollywood" (325). The
Orient, in short, playacts its image as imagined by the West. This is far more problematic than the
former form of Orientalism because the subject position of an "Oriental" is now realized only as the
subject that (re–)presents itself as the Other before the Western eyes, as imagined by the West: and
this Western gaze is what the Oriental subject identifies her/himself. It is disappointing in a sense
that Said does not develop his arguments more than the idea that this phenomenon of cultural

The Walt Disney Company vs. Studio Ghibli
What does a whistling mouse and a catlike bunny creature have in common? They are both the
logos of two leading animation companies: the Walt Disney Company and Studio Ghibli. While
Disney and Studio Ghibli vary in their style, production, and overall themes, they both produce
award winning and adventurous movies for Western and Non–Western audiences alike.
In 1928, the whistling Mickey Mouse in the short cartoon Steamboat Willie led to the beginnings of
success in Walt Disney's company and set the ball rolling for the studio to become the widest known
in the world (Holliss and Sibley 5). Before that, the company was strained financially and ... Show

Isao Takahata focused more on realistic settings such as school life during adolescence and

Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs set the stage for Walt Disney's studio rise to fame. Once more,

As western and foreign influences in animation are very much the issue for Malaysian animation
productions, it is very hard to pull ourselves away from this 'norm' since people are thinking that
following 'the trend' is the right thing to do. Although to start with, animation shorts that were

Cultural Differentialism in Regards to Studio Madhouse
Madhouse Inc. is a Japanese animation studio that was founded in October of 1972. Since then, the
studio has created many popular animated TV series, films and OVAs; short for original video
animations. Some of their works include the 2011 series Hunter X Hunter, The Animatrix, Paprika,
One–Punch Man, Highschool of the Dead and Death Note; just to name a few. The studio has
approximately 70 employees, once you include contractors, and their employment levels vary
depending on the number of productions the studio decides to take on at any given time (Madhouse
Inc.). In addition, the directors and animators at the studio are constantly changing; meaning that
there is no consistent style of animation. As a result, each project is approached from a new and
unique perspective.
In regards to the theoretical frameworks discussed by George Ritzer, Madhouse Inc. serves as a
prime example of cultural differentialism. Cultural differentialism is essentially the idea that
cultures, more often than not, do their best to differentiate themselves from one another and put up
barriers in an attempt to prevent other cultures from infringing on their traditions (Ritzer 155).
According to Ritzer, this theory is geared primarily towards cultures that, "at their core are largely
unaffected by any processes of globalization" (Ritzer 155). Excellent examples of cultural
differentialism can be found in cultures that consistently interact with

Review of Related Literature Throughout history most of Asia has been viewed as strange and
exotic by western cultures. This is especially true for Japan, because, unlike other Asian nations
Japan was isolated from western culture until around the year 1542 when the Portuguese landed at
Tanegashima (Bryant 14). There are several reasons for Japan's solitude, most of them geographical.
One of the primary reasons is what the Japanese call kamikaze, or divine wind (Bryant 24). These
strong stormy winds blew across the waters surrounding Japan, making it quite difficult to approach
the island. Japan is also quite far away from most western nations, especially since the ships had to

Gender Role in Kids & Young Adults' Animated Shows & Movies.
We grow up following the steps of the cartoon characters we see on TV. Thanks to these characters,
we get the sense of who we want to be in life, and how we want to make a change. History of
animation dates back to 1906, when the first animated cartoon was created. The title was Humorous
Phases of Funny Faces, and it was a sensation at that time. And then, the first "Mickey Mouse"
cartoon appeared in 1928, and with it came the Walt Disney Company. After years of history of
animation, people are now able to look back in history, and pay attention to the small details, such
as gender role in cartoons. At the beginning, cartoons were short films, supposed to make people
laugh; but when Disney's first animated movie came out, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves"
(1937), the meaning of animation changed. The movie tells the story of fourteen years old Snow
White, who has to run away from home because her stepmother wants to kills her, so that she can be
the most beautiful woman that exists. When she's running away, she goes into the deep forest,
finding a tiny house where she found refuge. Not realizing that the house had an owner already, she

Compare And Contrast Anime And Anime
In recent years, animated programs have dominated the world of film and TV in both America and
Japan. These programs, known as cartoons and anime, are some of the most popular forms of
entertainment today. Anime and cartoon shows, such as One Piece and Family Guy, have been
running for decades and are very well known among society. Animated films such as Disney's The
Lion King and Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away have also thrived and even surpassed animated
television shows in some instances. Both American and Japanese animation industries have
flourished, and their cartoons and animes continue to grow in popularity. However, similarities and
differences between the two soon arise when compared closely; these observations are often what
lead fans to prefer one style over the other as well as shape pop culture. Anime and cartoons had
very similar origins. Gertie the Dinosaur from 1914 is considered the first American cartoon. Japan's
first anime is not as clear, but many believe it to be 1917's An Obtuse Sword. Both of these
animated features were short, silent, and black–and–white. Their rise in popularity and introduction
of the style of animation seen in the modern world did not begin until their "Golden Age" of
animation. In the US, the "Golden Age" was from the 1920's to 1960's; this was when Walt Disney
created his own animation studio and began to put out longer cartoons with sound and color. Snow
White from the late 30's was Disney's first big feature film hit. In the

The Peabody Awards have a long history of finding and rewarding shows that exhibit excellence in
television programming, and Avatar: The Last Airbender is no exception. The show was incredibly
successful during its run and even though it ended almost a decade ago, still has a large fan base of
all different ages and genders. The show has also inspired several graphic novels and print books as
well as a spinoff series, Avatar: The Legend of Korra. Avatar is an excellent example of how mixing
styles and genres can enhance a show's potential.
Running for 61 episodes over three seasons, Avatar features an unusually deep plot for a children's
cartoon. In her article "The Influence of Japanese Animation on Avatar: The Last Airbender",
Katalin Bakonyi mentions that this is significant because, "American TV animation tends to be
constructed in an episodic way, where at the end of every episode characters are "reset" to their
default status." (Bakonyi 30) This is not the case in Avatar, however, where the overarching plot is
stated within the first couple episodes – Aang must master the four elements and defeat the Firelord
before the end of summer – and stays true to this mission all the way to the end. Although the group
occasionally gets off track, each episode propels them towards that final goal in one way or another.

follow as the characters develop in life. The movie really stands out because its realistic and honest
characters that win your sympathy despite their many flaws.
"Ponyo" was released in 2008 and won several awards. In 2008 Tokyo Anime Fair announced
"Ponyo" as Animation of the Year. In addition, the film reached #9 in the US box office charts on its
opening weekend and was a box office success.
The film has the very noticeable visual style and artwork, with bright, dreamy, watery, pastel
colours, Miyazaki always creates. Everything in the film was animated by hand with the traditional
technique. The backgrounds were created in pastels. In addition, the film is dealing with the
relationship humans have with the environment, a theme you often see in Miyazaki's films.

However, beside the good animation and the beautiful scenes Miyazaki creates, the film lacks in
character development. Most of the characters doesn't really serve any real purpose. They seem to

Who Said That Animation Is Just For Kids Essay
Ask any student in college about old cartoon shows like Looney Toons or X–men, and you'll
probably get a response like "I used to love watching that show!". Children in America today are
raised on cartoons, as most American animation is directed at children. If you were to ask the people
who said that they used to watch cartoons if they still watch animated shows today, they would
probably say that they grew out of watching cartoons a long time ago. However, this is not the case
everywhere, in Japan animated shows are directed to all ages instead of just children. Animated
television shows are made for children in America, but in Japan animation has a much broader
spectrum. In America one of the first popular achievements in ... Show more content on

This made animation much easier and soon became a trademark of American cartoons. As the years
went on cartoons did not diverge from the successful slapstick routine that was shown. But as the
years passed and local televisions were introduced, cartoons were no longer something you could
only see in theaters. Adults became less interested in the cartoons, and began considering cartoons
as something that only children should watch. As such animation companies began directing all of
their shows at young children. Merchandising was now the best way to make money off of these
cartoons now that the cartoons could be watched at home, with constant advertisement, companies
could sell all kinds of merchandise based off of cartoons, a great example of which is Disneyland.
Up into the 90s cartoons were still directed at children urging them to purchase the next cool toy
based off of the show. Today some animated shows are becoming more adult oriented with shows
like The Simpsons, or South Park which contain more mature content but still keep the crazy antics
that are prevalent in animation. Over the years American animation has almost always been very
episodic, where at the end of the episode every thing was back to normal and life keeps going as if
nothing has happened, character's in shows never age and always stay the same. This way people

Snow White Argumentative Essay
"Mon Dieu," I murmured, glancing at "the sassy, burping cow" that gawked brainlessly from the
cover of Home On the Range; its reverse had the words, "Round up the family and get ready for a
whole lotta fun with Disney's hilarious animated comedy Home on the Range," (Roper).
Unfortunately, Disneytends to exaggerate ever so slightly in marketing their products. Competitors–
DreamWorks, Blue Sky, and Laika– usually promote film mediocrity under the all–encompassing
banner of "the family film." But animation has changed significantly since Snow White and the
Seven Dwarves: Walter Elias Disney, the pioneering, persevering innovator, lowered the floodgates
for a burgeoning art, and suddenly, animation created thrillers, adventures, and worlds full ... Show

When Walt Disney debuted his first feature–length film, its titular character–Snow White– refrained
from decision–making, with every other character affecting her future: her stepmother, the wicked
queen, attempts to kill Snow White several times; the huntsman spares her life; the seven dwarves
take her in, although with initial surprise and reluctance; and the prince revives Snow White from
her death–like coma. Throughout this whirlwind of events, Snow White passively undergoes both
enjoyment and troubles, being acted upon by everyone except herself. Sleeping Beauty (1959)
possibly epitomises the "quintessential Disney princess, . . . who does nothing the whole film but
sing wistfully about Finding Her Man, before becoming the ultimate passive Damsel in Distress,
and other than that has maybe ten actual lines of dialogue," (Butler). Again, Aurora acts as the
recipient of consequences from the actions of all other characters, without attempting to take action,
nor to determine her fate. Feminist Disney attacks Aurora for helplessly watching events unfolding
around her, arguing that, "The older princesses– Cinderella, Aurora, Snow White– all of these
women have been rewarded for their beauty and kind, obedient disposition. None of these women
did anything to achieve being held up as role models for young girls." Thus "Disney and [other
animation studios] . . . [have] responded to parental demands for positive female role models with . .
. films featuring increasingly three–dimensional heroines"– giving their characters force of will to
actively participate in their stories, instead of overtly relying on others to influence their futures.
Going into the contemporary era, The Little Mermaid (1989) began to reflect that growing trend
among animated films, although

Isle Of Dogs

  • 1. Isle Of Dogs As to be expected, Director Wes Anderson once again delivers a masterfully crafted stop–motion animation film Isle of Dogs with distinctive style and striking visuals. Anderson captures the spirit of each canine character behavior with palpable affection and a careful eye for detail while addressing ideas of fear and aggression with underlying messages about distrust of the government and public resistance. Isle of Dogs is an artful masterpiece of skillful word building that lures viewers into the story with aplomb. From beginning to end, Isle of Dogs is told like a fable with surprising soberness and brutal honesty; the nostalgia of the film persists throughout despite it's setting twenty years in the future. The film is set in futuristic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fox (2007). In true Wes Anderson fashion, every shot is breathtakingly beautiful, captivating, and absolutely necessary to the film, with a unique style and stunning visuals not dissimilar to that of Blade Runner 2049 (which won an Academy Award for its amazing cinematography). The copious amounts of perfectly balanced shots in this film exhibits Anderson's love of symmetry, which contrasts with the endearing rough–around–the–edges quality of the stop–motion animation. Each setting has its unique tone and feeling, yet stays consistent with the film's overall theme. Every detail is included with immaculate precision and care, from discarded water bottles that catch the light like precious gemstones to each blade of grass billowing in the wind; this dissonant beauty and almost grotesque imagery is very prominent in Isle of Dogs. Best of all are the fight scenes, which devolve into cotton–cloud puffs of dust and flailing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Hayao Miyazaki and Japanese Animation Essay Hayao Miyazaki Hayao Miyazaki has been revolutionary in Japanese animation. A mangaka (an artist/writer/creator of manga, Japanese comics), an animator, and storyteller, Miyazaki has not only been very successful in his work, well known and loved by many, but has changed the world of anime with his unique style of drawing. Through passion and hard work, Miyazaki has become one of the most successful animators in all of Japan. Miyazaki was born on January 5th, 1941, in Tokyo, Japan (MUBI.com). His father, Katsuji Miyazaki, was the director and owner of their family's firm, Miyazaki Airplane, that made parts for Zero fighter planes. While animation was regaining its popularity in the postwar years, he saw Legend of the White Serpent by Taji Yabushita, the first Japanese colour animated movie, and he absolutely fell in love with the feature. After graduating from Toyotama High School (1959) he went on to enroll in Gakushuin University, where he studied political science and economics. While he was there, he studied European childrens books and comics after joining a children's literature research society, things by authors like Rosemary Sutcliff and Antoine du Saint–Exupery. In 1963, he finally graduated with a degree in political science and economics, but instead of moving into the fields of politics or finance, he promptly went to get a job at the animation studio of Toei Company, Toei Cine, where he had an apprenticeship before he was allowed to work as an entry–level in– betweener on Watchdog Woof–Woof and Wolf Boy Ken (an in–betweener takes the first and last frames of the action or movement drawn by the animator and creates the flow, the series of picutres/sketches in between the two to connect them and complete the movement or action). At the year 1945, Hiroshima and Nagazaki were levelled by the atomic bomb dropped by the United State, and this catastrophic event would have shape the nation over time. However, the Japanese has not simply forgotten about it, but the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagazaki seems to have given the Japanese a new meaning with the newer generation today. The word of atomic bomb to most of the people meant death and destruction, but at the same time it can also mean rebirth or hope for the future. Hence the concept of death and rebirth had become common theme in Japanese anime. The concept of rebirth can be seen the film Akira. Akira took place after the World War III, Tokyo has been rebuilt into a new city called "Neo–Tokyo", since at the start of the film Tokyo was destroyed by Akira. Neo–Tokyo is presented to the audience as a glowing city that filled neon lights and higher technology. Although the television show is meant for kids, it's more than likely that adults will be interested in the show just to see what everyone in the Pride Lands is up too. Samuel Morin, 3rd year animation student at Sheridan, was lucky enough to work on it. "I feel like I've come full circle with Lion King. I grew up being absolutely obsessed with Lion King and so the fact that they would kind of reboot it and that I get the opportunity to work on the first episode (and other episodes after that) its just crazy," said Morin. • 6. Spirited Away Viewing Hiyao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" for the third time, I was struck by a quality between generosity and love. On earlier viewings I was caught up by the boundless imagination of the story. This time I began to focus on the elements in the picture that didn't need to be there. Animation is a painstaking process, and there is a tendency to simplify its visual elements. Miyazaki, in contrast, offers complexity. His backgrounds are rich in detail, his canvas embraces space liberally, and it is all drawn with meticulous attention. We may not pay much conscious attention to the corners of the frame, but we know they are there, and they reinforce the remarkable precision of his fantasy worlds. Movies made for "everybody" are actually made for nobody in particular. Movies about specific characters in a detailed world are spellbinding because they make no attempt to cater to us; they are defiantly, triumphantly, themselves. As I watched the film again, I was spellbound as much as by any film I consider great. That helps explain why "Spirited Away" grossed more than "Titanic" in Japan, and was the first foreign film in history to open in the U. S. having already made more than $200 million. I was so fortunate to meet Miyazaki at the 2002 Toronto film festival. I told him I love the "gratuitous motion" in his films; instead of every movement being dictated by the story, sometimes people will just sit for a moment, or sigh, or gaze at a running stream, or do something extra, not to advance the story but only to give the sense of time and place and who they are. "We have a word for that in Japanese," he said. "It's called 'ma.' Emptiness. It's there intentionally." He clapped his hands three or four times. "The time in between my clapping is 'ma.' It mixes the traditional elements such as with a brave heroine and those cute animal sidekicks. The material appears to be more adventuresome and grown up. Similar to Fox's "Anastasia," Mulan is known as a film from which not just children but also adults can enjoy on their own, devoid of feeling an obligation in taking along with their children. Japanese animation, also widely known as anime, dominates most of the animation that exists in today's media. If one was to walk up and tell them "These movies are fairly racist, you should show them to your children lest they get the wrong idea!" in most cases, they will find them to be just a closet nutcase and ignore that like it never happened. • 11. Stop Motion Animation Stop motion animation: Stop motion animation is when you take a picture of something, move it ever so slightly (depending on how smooth you want the sequence to be) then take another picture and so on and so on. The sequence of pictures will create an illusion of a moving image. When creating a stop motion animation it can either be done traditionally or a computer can be used to generate the background sets. Examples of stop–motion animation on TV are commonly children's shows such as Morph, Shaun the sheep, Bagpuss, The Clangers, Noddy and Wallace and Gromit's World of Invention. The advantage of stop motion animation is that you can be creative because there aren't many limitations on what you can do with an object like you do in real life. The disadvantage is that it's very time consuming and extremely laborious and you have to make sure the camera's still because one little slip up shows very clearly. Clay animation: It is similar to stop motion animation however using clay. It works by capturing each frame and then playing the recorded shots to see a live action. Clay animation films were created in the 1908's, however it's in 1916 that it started to become popular overseas. In America New York is the heart of fashion, business and music. Basically it was the place to be or go to if you wanted your dreams to come true. Tokyo is a mirror of these themes for the Japanese people. One of the attractions in Tokyo specifically is Anime. The first generations to begin Anime started in the late 1910's. From then on Anime has become the core content to view one of the most famous animated series in the world. Two animated movies that have been greatly obsessed with not only in Japan, but also all around the world are Akira and Michiko & Hatchin. Both movies were created by two different director who rose in the Anime popularity not so far from one another. Katsuhiro Otomo was the director who created Akira which was published in 1988, and Sayo Yamamoto was the director who created Michiko & Hatchin. With animation being a competitive field where directors are trying to create the most critically acclaimed filmed, some of the factors that are often ignored is whether the director was a male or female. I chose a topic revolving around anime mainly because I watch it and I wanted to do my project on something I found interesting. Another reason for my choice in topics is because I already knew about some of the things revolving around my thesis, my thesis being how America's encounter resulted in a sanitized, non–stereotyped and easily accessible form of media. Even though I had background information on my topic, researching it gave me material I could build upon and use to support the reasons behind my thesis. Now that you know the topic that this project is based on, it would probably be important for you to know where most of my information was derived from. Most the information used in this project came from my own background knowledge and the internet. Background knowledge on this topic was especially useful since it helped with figuring out what to focus on and building ideas. I was also able to learn much more about the career that I may be pursuing in the future, as well as the people in the field similar to it. The Jungian personality test showed that my personality type, the INFP, is a mediator (Jung, 1998). The website claims that INFJs are idealistic, future–oriented, as well as creative. The possible careers listed on the website are psychologists, artists, and child care/ teachers (BSM, 2016). These results show some correlation to my own personality, as I am aspiring to be an artist. I am also very future–oriented and I would like to perceive myself as being rather creative. • 20. The Meaning Of The Fate Apocrypha Poster From A-1 Pictures Art is different for each individual. There are those who believe that art only includes high class paintings made by people from high social order like Michelangelo or Francisco Goya. There are also those who believe anything can be considered art, not just paintings but songs, movies, and even video games. But while everybody has different opinions what art can be, everyone understands that art has some meaning behind it. On this passage below, I will be demonstrating the meaning behind "Fate Apocrypha" poster from A–1 Pictures. A–1 Pictures is an entertainment company that animates stories from light novels to manga. While they do not actually create stories themselves, the publish stories that can have a light hearted theme to emotional themes. Since they publish numerous stories per year, they strive to have each story be as developed and lucid as possible. Their ultimate goal in doing all of this is to attract a huge number of audiences to their shows in hopes of increasing sales and views. A–1 Pictures created this poster in order to attract people who are interested in watching genres that are the action–fantasy. To be able to portray the action genre, the background is drawn that displayed some sort of conflict. The background displayed a dead tree, ashes, burning building, and embers flying around. The dead tree signified that the land itself was dying. The burning buildings signify the destruction of humanity. The ashes are covering most of the poster which gives the idea that the land has been burning for a long time. With all the destruction on the background, the main focus of the poster is the picture of two determined and strong looking characters. Since the characters looks determined and strong while there is chaos all around them, the audience can tell that the story will not be focused on the hardships of war but on the fights that happen in battle. To portray the fantasy portion of the story, the two characters are wearing completely different clothing. The male character seems to be wearing a suit and vest which is common to the present day era, while the female character is wearing armor which was common to the medieval era. • 21. The Negative Impact Of Eroticism In Japanese Animation While violence attributed to either technological fusion or natural depiction is a great cause of concern for most critics of anime, it does not compare to the outrage visited upon Japanese animation on the basis of sexually explicit content. According to Hinton (2014), the greatest concern for most critics of anime is the constant depiction of underage girls in sexually suggesting situations and scenes. This is especially true for Japanese animation subgenres such as hentai, lolicon and rorikon. Accordingly, Hinton (2014) suggests that western media in particular is often outraged by images of scantily dressed underage girls in Japanese animation. The reality of the matter, according to Hinton, is that Japanese culture as a whole seems to tolerate this sexual depiction because their culture has in the past permitted the prostitution of underage, school going girls by older me for financial gain (Hinton, 2014). In this regard, Hinton (2014) suggests that eroticism in Japanese animation is largely influenced by two key factors; fantasy and purity or innocence, which when combined often have the net effect of distorting human nature. The Negative Impact of Violence and Eroticism in Japanese Animation on Teenagers There exists, among proponents of Japanese animation, the notion that an individual can exists both in the fantasy world of anime, and the real world. The funny characters and feel–good script entertain children and also gives them moral lessons along the way. The same cannot be said for international films such as Grave of the Fireflies (1988) directed by Isao Takahata and Waltz with Bashir (2008) directed by Ari Folman. These animated films contrast each other, not only cinematically, but in the plotline as well. Wars replay over the main characters in each film, both inside and outside the war itself. The difference between civilians and soldiers, color and grayscale, dreams and reality create films which mesmerize the adult audience. Both anime and comic–book animation soften the audience's overwhelming emotions when facing the realities brought by war and help story–tellers create scenes with a specific purpose. The animation used in Grave of the Fireflies provides child–like imagination during World War II. Set in Japan, the plot follows two children torn away from their parents and struggling to survive on their own. By using anime, the children's harsh conditions seem unreal, yet powerful. Since then, the studio has created many popular animated TV series, films and OVAs; short for original video animations. Some of their works include the 2011 series Hunter X Hunter, The Animatrix, Paprika, One–Punch Man, Highschool of the Dead and Death Note; just to name a few. The studio has approximately 70 employees, once you include contractors, and their employment levels vary depending on the number of productions the studio decides to take on at any given time (Madhouse Inc.). In addition, the directors and animators at the studio are constantly changing; meaning that there is no consistent style of animation. As a result, each project is approached from a new and unique perspective. In regards to the theoretical frameworks discussed by George Ritzer, Madhouse Inc. serves as a prime example of cultural differentialism. Cultural differentialism is essentially the idea that cultures, more often than not, do their best to differentiate themselves from one another and put up barriers in an attempt to prevent other cultures from infringing on their traditions (Ritzer 155). According to Ritzer, this theory is geared primarily towards cultures that, "at their core are largely unaffected by any processes of globalization" (Ritzer 155). This is especially true for Japan, because, unlike other Asian nations Japan was isolated from western culture until around the year 1542 when the Portuguese landed at Tanegashima (Bryant 14). There are several reasons for Japan's solitude, most of them geographical. One of the primary reasons is what the Japanese call kamikaze, or divine wind (Bryant 24). • 33. Compare And Contrast Anime And Anime In recent years, animated programs have dominated the world of film and TV in both America and Japan. These programs, known as cartoons and anime, are some of the most popular forms of entertainment today. Anime and cartoon shows, such as One Piece and Family Guy, have been running for decades and are very well known among society. Animated films such as Disney's The Lion King and Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away have also thrived and even surpassed animated television shows in some instances. Both American and Japanese animation industries have flourished, and their cartoons and animes continue to grow in popularity. However, similarities and differences between the two soon arise when compared closely; these observations are often what lead fans to prefer one style over the other as well as shape pop culture. Anime and cartoons had very similar origins. Gertie the Dinosaur from 1914 is considered the first American cartoon. Japan's first anime is not as clear, but many believe it to be 1917's An Obtuse Sword. Both of these animated features were short, silent, and black–and–white. Their rise in popularity and introduction of the style of animation seen in the modern world did not begin until their "Golden Age" of animation. In the US, the "Golden Age" was from the 1920's to 1960's; this was when Walt Disney created his own animation studio and began to put out longer cartoons with sound and color. Throughout this whirlwind of events, Snow White passively undergoes both enjoyment and troubles, being acted upon by everyone except herself. Sleeping Beauty (1959) possibly epitomises the "quintessential Disney princess, . . . who does nothing the whole film but sing wistfully about Finding Her Man, before becoming the ultimate passive Damsel in Distress, and other than that has maybe ten actual lines of dialogue," (Butler). Again, Aurora acts as the recipient of consequences from the actions of all other characters, without attempting to take action, nor to determine her fate. Feminist Disney attacks Aurora for helplessly watching events unfolding around her, arguing that, "The older princesses– Cinderella, Aurora, Snow White– all of these women have been rewarded for their beauty and kind, obedient disposition.
