The Three Types of Air
Compressors
COMPRESSOR WORLD
1. Air pressure is usually measured in psi
(pounds per square inch).
2. Air pressure measured above
atmospheric pressure is measured in gage
pressure (psig), while pressure measured
against vacuum is measured in (psia).
Measuring Air Pressure
 Reciprocating Compressors
 Rotary Screw Compressors
 Centrifugal Compressors
Three Main Types of Air
Compressors
Pros and Cons of Reciprocating
Compressors
PROS
1. Better for homes where
smaller applications are
required.
2. Uses very little power.
3. Is extremely affordable.
4. Is operable under a wide
range of pressure.
CONS
1. Maintenance is
problematic.
2. Creates a lot of
noise.
3. Can’t be used for
bigger applications.
4. Replacement of oil-free
parts can be
expensive.
PROS
1. Continuous
Intercooling and
excellent efficiency.
2. Extremely low cost of
maintenance.
3. No noise.
4. Can be operated for a
long period of time.
CONS
1. Is good only for
medium loads.
2. At the time it is
unloaded it can use
50%to90% of the
power.
Pros and Cons of Rotary Screw
Compressors
PROS
1. Is the best for heavy
pressure applications.
2. Requires very less
maintenance.
3. Is beneficial in applications
when the load is greater
than 200 hp.
CONS
1. Cannot give as much
efficiency as a rotary
screw compressor.
2. Intercooling should be
provided in case being
used for applications
that need higher
pressure.
Pros and Cons of Centrifugal
Compressor
