sport specific to that culture(a sport not
popular in America). Be sure to include
rules, equipment, objective of game and how
it is played.
 You will have time to work on this in class
today
 You will present the sport to the class.

 There are many differences among cultures
which makes it hard to understand those
different form us.
 If an Australian invites you over for tea and
says arrive at 7:00, what time should you
arrive and what could you expect to do?

– Arrive no earlier than 8:00 and expect lamb
chops, sausage, French fries, a veggie, salad,
and dessert.

20. Dealing with Variation in other
societies
 Difference are interesting, but often causes
problems
 Ethnocentrism- one’s use to their way and do
not like to accept ways of doing it.
– Can avoid a new way that may be beneficial.
 Cultural Relativism- judge things by their own
standards not using your own bias.

21. Variation among Societies
 Subcultures- cultures that exists with in a
culture but follow the norms and values of
the larger culture
– Example: Puerto Rican, Catholic, teachers,
 Counter culture- Exists with the larger culture
but goes against the norms and values.
– Examples Hippies, KKK, Youth movement of the
60’s
