22. A GLIMPSE OF HISTORY
Photosynthesis is a very important process in nature that it
is quiet difficult to understand. Scientists in early times conducted
many experiments to prove and fully understand how it works.
In the 1600s, scientist Jan Baptiste de Helmont carried out
an experiment on a willow tree. He believed that water was the
main source of life of plants. John Woodward rejected Helmont’s
conclusion by conducting his own experiment in plants in the
1600s. Woodward correctly concluded that most water absorbed
by plants is released into the atmosphere.
This led to further experiments about photosynthesis.
