Creating a strong thesis statement
1. ENGL 102-17 C.J. Hill
UNIT 3: The Research Essay
Creating a Strong Thesis Statement
This essay assignment is large with several moving parts. As a result, the thesis
statement cannot be completed in just one sentence. Use this worksheet as a guide
for creating a strong thesis statement for your Place Studies Research Essay.
1) THE UMBRELLA STATEMENT/STATEMENT OF CONNECTION
a. This is the part of the thesis that makes a straight-up claim/argument.
Ideally, for the requirements of this assignment, this statement will
double as the statement of connection between environment and
crisis/issue/topic.
b. Due to the hazardous baking fumes in Far Far Away, the gingerbread men have
been driven to protest.
2) AS A RESULT…
a. This is the part of the thesis that may discuss several things. It may
discuss the effect your chosen topic has had on your chosen
environment, or vice versa.
b. This statement is similar to a “typical” one sentence thesis statement
in that it includes (at least) three body points that will be discussed in
the essay.
c. As a result, these protests have led to further unrest and deterioration to the
region, including dramatically falling property values, pollution increases, and an
overall drop in morale.
3) STATEMENT OF SOLUTION OR COMMENTARY
a. This is the part of the thesis that should come last in the three parts. It
should give a statement toward a solution to this crisis, or some
personal commentary on how this crisis could have been avoided or
avoided in the future.
b. However, there may be a solution to this crisis in the act of opening a more
productive dialogue between humans and baked goods.
