was the patron of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.
This source suggests the Great Exhibition followed a similar trend how museums mainly operated in
the nineteenth century. Most images in the catalogue represent the Victorian notion of progress,
making visitors react a certain way to exhibits and also influencing behaviour generally throughout
the museum to the same way that Foucault shows with the concept of the Panopticon. Using the
images of Moving Machinery, General View of the Exterior of the Building and The Transept in the
Comprehensive Pictures catalogue, this essay will analyse each of these images to show their
revelation of exhibitionary cultures, which means to critically understand attitudes to the way which
museums operate exhibitions. It will also examine how historians responded to the historiographical
debate surrounding the Great Exhibition, and argues that the Great Exhibition was generally
successful and that it had a mainstream exhibitionary culture compared with other museums in the
nineteenth century.

Joseph Paxton was born in Milton Bryan in Bedfordshire, England on August 3rd 1803, he was the
seventh son of a farmer, grew up in a big family. He was an English architect, gardener and also

when we obtained an employment opportunity at Battlesden Park. At the time he was 15 years old,

hotels are usually not allowed to do this but the lady at the reception desk allowed us to stay because
we explained to her that we had no money left.
We did not have any dinner that night and had no clue of what to do the next day.

I have always looked forward to traveling to London. This is because of the exciting stories I heard
from my friends. From the stories, I heard that London accommodated the best museums, and other
historical places. I planned and decided to take the trip before the first year of my college. I have not
traveled alone outside the United States of America so I scheduled the visit to London late October
2014. Before traveling, I bought the travel card via online. I ensured I had paid for my return ticket.
This timing turned out to be perfect because my cousin who resides in London invited me to his
place, it was an opportunity for me to spend my vacation with him in London. I ensured that I had
