the first detailed account of the mission in Somalia. A major character in the book is Major General
William F. Garrison. He was the commander of the Task Force Ranger and also served as a private
and served two tours in Vietnam. This character dealt with different situations very well and never

War is a traumatic and scarring experience for all who are involved. In Black Hawk Down, author
Mark Bowden cleverly portrays this theme to his audience by appealing to their emotions. However
Mark's uses of rhetoric may not necessarily include figurative language, it does include literary
techniques such as intense realism to embody the action packed portions of the story and in–depth
characterization that allows the audience to bond with his characters and sympathize for them.

realize that during this mission, U.S. troops had the most continuous and gruesome battle fought by
American's since the Vietnam War. The afternoon of October 3rd, 1993, soldiers of Task Force
Ranger, and Delta Force were sent to capture two lieutenants of a rebel Somalian warlord and return
to base. This mission was supposed to take 30 min, but instead, the soldiers were pinned down in the
middle of Mogadishu market and in a desperate effort of kill or be killed. For about 20 hours, U.S.
soldiers created a bloody firefight that resulted in 19 American fatalities and the death of 1000
Somali fighters. Black Hawk Down tells the story of that desperate battle, from all angles of the war.
An external conflict is the U.S army trying to help the people of Somalia from the vicious militia

Mogadishu. It started on March 2001 and it was released January 18, 2002. During the real

they may have made. One main one is that they always have each others' backs. The Deltas look
after the Rangers, and act as their role models. "It was as if the Rangers saw the D–Boys as their big

Unfortunately, the mission does not go as planned. One unit of Humvees and helicopters, led by
Sargent Jeff Struecker, played by Brian Van Holt, successfully takes the hostages of advisors while
Staff Sargent Matthew Eversmann's, played by Josh Harnett, unit is dropped in by helicopter but, at
the wrong drop zone a few blocks away. The operation then begins to fall apart when both units
receive heavy gun fire. Each unit then to separates, complicating things further. In the midst of the
gun fire and explosions, Black Hawk Super–Six One, piloted by Chief Warrant Officer Clifton
"Elvis" Wolcott, played by Jeremy Piven, is hit with an RPG. The helicopter crashes to the ground a
few miles away from the rest of the convoy, leaving them stranded and unprotected. Wolcott and his
co–pilot do not survive, leaving two gunmen wounded. Eversmann's team is sent to secure the
Super–Six One. Shortly after their arrival Black Hawk Super–Six Four, piloted by Chief Warrant
Officer Michel Durant, played by Ron Eldard, is shot down by another RPG landing another few
miles away. With no ground team able to make it to the crash site, Sargent First Class Randy
Shughart and Master Sargent Gary, played by Johnny Strong and Tom Guiry,

The events that were portrayed in "Black Hawk Down" drastically affected the U.S.' foreign policy
during the 1990's. The U.S soldiers went into a country in East Africa called Somalia. They went
into the one city, Mogadishu, to capture top lieutenants of the warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The
mission was only supposed to take an hour, but it ended up lasting the entire night into the next
morning. It was a short war that the U.S. never wanted to get into. At that time in the early 1990's
the U.S. was the only superpower country left in the world. The Soviet Union collapsed after the
Cold War and the left the U.S. at the top. With the U.S. being the only superpower left, it meant that

What should have taken no more than an hour, lasted the whole day and into the night. Things went
wrong right from the beginning. To start, they went into the Bakaara Market, which is one of the
most dangerous places because mostly everyone there has a gun. Also, all of Aidid's followers were
high on a drug called khat. They would pack it in their mouth and they would be very energetic
during the day and then they would lose all that energy and crash at night. The U.S. forces went in
during the middle of the day. Once the mission started, the one Ranger fell out of the one Black
Hawk when they were fast–roping to the ground. They had to get him on a stretcher and transport
him back to base. Then one of the Black Hawks got shot down and crashed into the city streets.
More Rangers had to go and secure that crash site and bring all the crew with them. They had to do
all this while being shot at by thousands of Aidid's followers. To make things worse, another Black
Hawk was shot down and they had to go defend that crash site. No one could get to it quickly, so
Delta Force snipers Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart went down voluntarily to secure the crash
site. Sadly, they both were killed trying to defend the men inside the helicopter. The pilot of the
Black Hawk, Mike Durant, was captured and taken prisoner by Aidid's men. The United States
citizens were shocked when they heard about this event. The images that they
