Widespread Media Coverage Of Mass Shootings
For this current event, I chose to read the article titled, Widespread media coverage contributing to
rise in mass shootings, say psychologists, by Jess Staufenberg. In this article Jess elaborates on the
idea proposed by psychologists that giving mass shooters the fame they desire in the media is
contributing to their rise. Staufenberg begins by highlighting the reasons the media is being looked
at as the root cause of the problem. Mass shootings are escalating as well as the mass coverage of
them due to higher ratings and advertiser sales. As a result of the media covering an abundance of
mass shooting stories, young adults have been found to be obsessed with those mass murderers and
have actually replicated their behavior. According to

The Effect Of Media Coverage On The Thinking And Behavior...
Abstract
This paper explores published articles that report on results from research conducted on various
methods of persuasion. The articles, however, vary in their definitions and utilization of the methods
of persuasion and their relationship with consumers. Based on psychological principles that direct
human behavior, Robert Cialdini's (2007), 6 principals of persuasion suggests that face to face
interactions are most effective in emphasizing knowledge and authority. This paper examines Berger
and Berger's (2012) scientific research evidence to substantiate the major role of technology and
mass media in the persuasion of consumers. The use of persuasion to control people for the sole
benefit of the persuader is examined in Ridout and Franz's (2011) research of persuasive ads and
who is affected by ad exposure. This book also presents evidence to support this research. Shen and
Dillard's (2013) research suggests mass media contributes great influence on the thinking and
behavior of consumers' and is scientifically proven to be the universal source of information. This
paper will examine the impact of media coverage of elections and how it persuades the electorates '
behavior, it will explore the effects of mass media on political power and show how media
simultaneously disrupts and defends the status quo, including the advantages and disadvantages
during election campaigns. Shrum's (2012) research suggests that marketers integrate products in the
media by injecting

Media Coverage Of The Media
Lindsay Lohan. Britney Spears. Winona Ryder. Farrah Fawcett. The preceding list of people all have
a few things in common. Most noticeable is the fact that they are all contemporary celebrities and
women. However, these celebrities share another common trait that will be of much more relevance
in the discussion that will follow: they have all been given the label of kleptomaniac at one point or
another in the public eye due to being caught shoplifting at least once. To be fair, diagnoses made by
tabloids and the media are of much less substance than medical diagnosis. It is plausible that one or
more of the celebrities mentioned above who were caught shoplifting were not stealing out of a
recurrent and compulsive urge. Regardless, whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a case of a man who would not eat unless his food was stolen, so a servant would take pains
to hide the man's food in such a manner that the man could "steal" it and eat rather than die from
starvation. One woman was so afflicted with the compulsion to steal that she would not hesitate in
stealing offerings and tithes from church baskets at the altar. An otherwise upstanding woman was
such a helpless thief that she would steal bread from her friends' dinner table if there was nothing
else more valuable to be had. There is even record of a clergyman whose kleptomania was so
notorious that the Church eventually had to cut ties with him. A British lady, presumably of high
society, was prosecuted for stealing handkerchiefs from a clothing store; the Times which reported
on the case insinuated that recurrent and compulsive theft of cheap items from shops is quite
common among the ladies of high society in London. This behavior was so well–known that family
members arranged a well–coordinated effort with drivers and shopkeepers to keep tabs on their
thieving ladies and to make sure that the shopkeepers got reimbursed. Sometimes the thief herself
would be the one writing the check that the shopkeepers would inevitably send to their home. One
of the causes of kleptomania appears to be general insanity. The behavior is so compulsive, that
people who are otherwise upstanding and moral in

Media War Coverage From the beginning of time when humans started fighting wars regardless of
the reasoning leaders discovered how important propaganda and the public's opinion of why they
were fighting the war. If the nation's leaders believes in why they are fighting a war the Country
willbe more likely to give their support and motivated to stay in the fight for the long haul. Edward
R. Murrow, former reporter for CBS once said, "We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. We
will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason if we remember that we are not descended from
fearful men, not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate and to defend causes which

Media Coverage Of Women In Sports Essay
The article advances to examine the extent of media coverage in sports targeting female athletes.
C.A. Tuggle claims, shows like Sports Center allocate less than five percent of the coverage on the
show to women's sports (Qtd in Hallmark and Armstrong 224). This reaffirms what I already knew
about coverage and female athletes. Shows centered around sports have an uneven distribution of
coverage. Females in basketball has the highest coverage among all sports played by women at one
percent of the coverage. Armstrong brings up a valid argument, "Televising women's games less
often than men's games and in particular, producing them in a less appealing fashion than men's
games, creates a cycle wherein poor coverage begets minimal advertising interest ... Show more

Utilizing what I just learned from the previous articles I decided to type "Sports spectatorship" in the
search engine. I discovered an article called, "Women's Sport Spectatorship: An Exploration of
Men's Influence," This study examined women's perspective on what's considered as "men's sports".
Many women who were interviewed at men's basketball games all repeated that they haven't gone to
a women's basketball game in a while or maybe never. A woman named Hannah was interviewed
and she acknowledged that she could name statistics and names of basketball players on the top of
her head but had little to no knowledge on women's basketball. She basically restated the same
predicament I was in. Another interviewee named Claire reiterated and confirmed what I already
learned that women's basketball is an unknown phenomenon and ties it back to the media's
involvement in the situation. The most interesting part was when Hannah was interviewed, and she
had stated my feelings exactly on women's basketball. This indicates that there is a recurring theme,
but not just women but people in general are not being exposed to women in basketball and it's no
wonder that there is such a wide gap of pay between the two

Media Coverage On ISIS
ISIS has been training young children to fight against the infidels. They have raped multiple women
from the age of nine and older. ISIS has begun to expand its borders into Afghanistan; which in turn,
is causing the remaining followers of Al Aqidah to join ISIS. Covering the "War on Terror" is a big
opportunity for both sides of the campaign, so it is crucial to know whether or not people are getting
accurate coverage from the media. The media covering this campaign is depicting accurate
coverage, because the media provides information about ISIS by interviewing people who have been
affected by ISIS, videoing live ISIS attacks and Yazidi rescue operations, and filming how ISIS is
training their followers. Firstly, the media provides accurate coverage on ISIS, because they
interview the victims of ISIS. The majority of the people that were interviewed were women,
because ISIS uses them as slaves and are treated very poorly. For example, in the video "Escaping
ISIS", a young Yazidi women was interviewed about how ISIS treats their captures. She explained
that they would rape several women over the course of a week. Furthermore, she says that ISIS was
acting so terrible to these women that the women tried to find ways to commit suicide. She

not only video live rescues, but also live "tours" of some of the ISIS hideouts to learn more about
ISIS' lifestyle. For example, in the film "ISIS in Afghanistan", there is a village that is primarily
controlled by ISIS. ISIS uses this village as a training ground for young children and refuge from the

Media Coverage of Homicides Essay
Media coverage of news events can be disseminated to the general public in any number of different
ways and media biases often "reflects certain organizational and/or professional preferences or
values" (Bennett 2011, 173). In fact, Lundman (2003) points out "that journalists assess the
newsworthiness of homicides occurrences using the relative frequency of particular types of
murders and how well specific murder occurrences mesh with stereotypical race and gender
typifications (357)." In addition, Johnson (2012) felt that the real job of media was to "create a
message that...grabs public attention (62)." In other words, can the media grab the public's attention
and hold it?
Take for example the recent case of George Zimmerman and ... Show more content on

The general public became inundated with every detail of the trial and national leaders began
weighing in on the guilt or innocence of the defendant, George Zimmerman. Why? Was it the
general public's fascination with the players in the tragedy or the media's basis towards this
homicide? Bennett (2011) points out; "that people in the middle see the press as generally neutral,
whereas those on the left complain that the news is too conservative, and those on the right think the
news has a left–leaning bias (176)."
Lundman (2003) pointed to the fact that "not all murders...are selected for coverage by news media
(358)." And, that "when murders are selected, some receive frequent and prominent attention, while
others receive infrequent and obscure coverage (358)." In fact, during the time frame of George
Zimmerman's trial there were other murders involving race and gender. One can only wonder then,
"do some homicides therefore receive more attention and others less because of the race and gender
of the actors involved (Lundman, 2003, 358)?" Throughout

9/11 Media Coverage
Everyone can remember, vividly in their mind, where they were on September 11th, 2001. Fourteen
years later, and even though I was in third grade, at the time, I clearly remember the day. The
September 11th attacks (9/11) were a series of coordinated terrorist attacks which targeted symbolic
United States' landmarks. Islamic terrorist group, al–Qaeda, hijacked planes and crashed them into
these landmarks– The World Trade Center's Twin Towers and The Pentagon being two of the
biggest. These events left almost three thousand people dead. It is a tragic day, which we solemnly
reflect on every year (History.com Staff 1). The details and the attack, itself, are shocking and
devastating. However, with every day in age, what tends to be most striking, is how the media
handled the event and how the media landscape was transformed.
Compared to most of today's coverage, the news of the 9/11 attacks spread like wildfire. When
people had gotten word that the first plane hit the World Trade Center, many immediately turned on
their televisions. Television news seemed to have been the most popular source of news among the
people. By 8:52 a.m., minutes after the initial attack, many news stations, from Fox News to CNN,
were covering the attacks (K. Fung 1). During this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

had really devoted most of their coverage on the attacks and it is known to be a respectable source.
They even went as far to adding a special section called, "A Nation Challenged", which was solely

Media Coverage Of Crime Statistics
Crime statistics are been used by individuals, groups in society and government as a source of
information about the nature and extent of crime, locally and nationally. Crime statistics and media
coverage of statistics is used by government as a basis and justification for their criminal justice
policies in order to respond to crime effectively. A good example of this is the drug classification
policy in England and Wales whereby changing media coverage of incidents of the usage of
cannabis influenced the government to move the drug from class B to C in 2004, and back to class B
in 2009.
Crime statistics helped the public to know how much crime, and which particular type of crime are
in a particular area. For example, how much crime is in

interesting points during the presentation from the news reporters. First, their lack of emotion shows
that news coverage was very straight forward and to the point. They read through the teleprompter

Media Coverage Of Childhood Obesity
Media coverage contributes to how childhood obesity is framed and stigmatized in Canadian
society. The media contributes to changes in popular culture, which can affect how the dilemma of
childhood obesity is viewed and addressed. Several forms of media, including campaigns, social
media, and the news help to construct popular opinions when looking at the issue. The views
provided by different media platforms and organizations help to frame the problem of childhood
obesity, and address the problems associated with the dilemma. First, media coverage of childhood
obesity can be seen from organizations such as the Childhood Obesity Foundation. The
organization's purpose is "...to lead a societal shift toward healthy eating and active lifestyles to
promote childhood healthy weights and the resulting physical and emotional impacts" (Childhood
Obesity Foundation 2015). The mission statement promotes the idea that childhood obesity could
cause unhappiness and sickness for children, and that society needs to change in order to address the
issue. A section on the website addresses the current obesogenic environment of society, which it
describes as "...places that encourage people to eat unhealthily and not exercise enough" (Childhood
Obesity Foundation 2015). The foundation frames society as a negative environment that
encourages unhealthy behaviors, requiring changes to a more health–focused society. Furthermore,
the website has a section regarding the complications of childhood

Media Coverage Of Mass Violence Analysis
When news outlets document media in great detail, such as a shooting or a suicide, by the news and
other media, according to the article "Media coverage of mass violence" page 1, "there is a two–
week period following in which imitations become significantly more likely." (1) This is called the
contagion effect. To circumvent this, media reporters should follow guidelines, such as being more
brief with their report, or omitting the person's information. News reporters are quick to jump onto
bandwagons to report media, but in their efforts to get news out to viewers quickly and clearly, they
may be unintentionally setting the stage for others to commit the same act. Many are influenced by
something, whether it be a movie, song, or another person's actions. How do they get inspired by
someone else's actions though? The media. Their uncensored coverage of any and all news seems to
be feeding off of itself by causing even more tragedies, which keeps the cycle going. What can be
done about this death trend that news reporters unknowingly keep going? If reporters were urged to
dilute or omit details from their reports, then ratings of suicides and shootings would potentially
decrease. In the article "Reporters Must Adopt Guidelines for Mass Shootings to Prevent Copycat ...

right to hear, the amount of potential saved lives makes the argument obsolete. In the end, it is up to
the reporters to take matters into their own hands to stop the contagion

Though some groups still persist that are by and large are politically motivated for instance, ETA,
Hamas and Hezbollah. It is difficult to singularly define terrorism, as the concept itself is much
disputed in society. It can be interpreted as a method of repeated violence by groups, individuals or
state actors, for idiosyncratic or political reasons by creating feelings of apprehension and
uncertainty (Jongman, A. J, 1988). Albert Jongman selecting the stated United Nations definition

others due to its authority as a political intergovernmental organisation. The definition states both
reasons for terrorist activity which is crucial in relation to whether religion is an effective source of
crime prevention. The apparent shift in the nature of terrorism clearly demonstrates that religion
generates further acts of criminality. The role of religion as decribed in academic literature is more
from a critical perspective as opposed to media sources that tend to be much one sided. Manas K.

The CNN Effect: The Media and Crime Coverage
The Media and Crime Coverage
Introduction The manner in which mainstream media depicts various aspects of American life has a
correspond effect on how these events are perceived by the American public. When isolated media
events are sensationalized, these depictions can result in misperceptions and fear, especially when
they involve issues that have personal implications for viewers such as crime. To gain some fresh
insights into these issues, this paper examines how CNN covers crime in its productions such as
"The Situation Room" with Wolf Blitzer as well as its other productions. A review of the relevant
literature concerning these issues from a criminological perspective is followed by a summary of the
research and important findings in the conclusion.
Review and Analysis Across the board, major news networks exert an enormous amount of
influence over public thought in the United States. Some major news networks, though, appear to
exert more than their fair share of influence on American public thought. In fact, in what has been
termed "the CNN effect," the ability of this news organization to influence public thought and even
national lawmakers has become the source of growing concern by some observers (Robinson,
2002). According to Robinson, "The original CNN effect referred to the ubiquity of the channel (so
that all sides were using the same information source and originated during the 1991 Gulf War.

Western Media And Its Coverage Of Terrorism
If a child grows up on the false conviction that the world is flat, like a map, s/he will believe it until
proven otherwise. When s/he is presented with a three dimensional sphere, s/he will deny that the
object is an accurate portrayal of the world, because all s/he knows is that the world is flat. But if
another child grows up on the true conviction that the world can be viewed flat as well as three–
dimensional, then being presented with the a globe, s/he will accept that both are legitimate ways to
view Earth. This is the same principle that follows Western media and their coverage of terrorism.
The U.S. media continues to remain loyal to a deceitful standard of terrorism, presenting the entire
country with an invalid perception of terrorism in the Middle East. This coverage reaches all
demographics nation wide and raises a misguided population. America is a democratic society
where the power is vested in it's people. It is imperative that we educate our nation to be globally
contestant and accurately knowledgeable.
People may question the relation between terrorism and American media; the two are more closely
analogous than anyone can really comprehend. Terrorism and media have a symbiotic relationship
that has a grand scale influence on millions– creating a singular image of the victims and
perpetrators to a national audience, which in turn forms stereotypes and stigmas. Media today,
thrives on stories of conflict and perfectly, terrorism thrives on gaining

The Effects Of Mass Media Coverage On Society
Throughout history, mass media coverage, which is most common in developed nations, has been a
key benefactor, among several factors, that has influenced science, public policy, knowledge, and
aptitude. A poll conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and Press found in the United
States that television ranks number one as the leading source of daily news followed by newspapers,
radio, and the internet. Knowledge has never been so easily accessible than it is now, with the latest
news being available to us, whenever and usually wherever. We are able to communicate with others
on opposite hemispheres and learn about another country's values and customs without actually
going there. Regrettably, due to the media's extensiveness and accessibility it inevitably bears
certain problems as it reports information that is inadequate or creates bias. As a society, we should
rethink some opinions and investigate numerous perspectives before making judgments in order to
avoid prejudice.
An intimidating ordeal that has received much attention in the media is climate change caused by
global warming. Global warming is a gradual rise in the general temperature of earth's atmosphere
due to the greenhouse effect, which is caused by increasing carbon dioxide levels,
chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. The greenhouse effect occurs when solar radiation that
should be reflected back into space, instead becomes trapped in the atmosphere because of the
accumulation of greenhouse

The Mainstream Media 's Coverage Of The Drug War
The mainstream media's coverage of the drug war fits the propoganda model relatively well. There
are a few instances where the media does stray from a strict view of the propoganda model, but they
are well within the spirit of the model and fall within the model's application in modern times. This
paper will examine the mainstream media's coverage of the drug war, particularly that of the 43
missing students and the Gary Webb controversy, and compare it to the five filters the propoganda
model assigns. The first filter deals with the ownership of the media. Since the media is owned by
various corporations, it does follow that coverage of the drug war may not be the most popular of
topics. According to Pedro, generally stories that do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the coverage of the protests surrounding the 43 missing students by each of the big news
outlets focuses on the same issues. Each of the stories published by big media outlets covering the
protests hit the same points of the missing students, the drug war death count, and the fault of the
Mexican government. None of the articles mentioned the historic U.S. involvement in the drug war.
Also, none of the articles from big media gave any sort of context about the protest other than it was
on the day the Mexican Revolution is commemorated. Although the protest was covered, a reader
who knew nothing about the drug war would assume that Mexico alone is responsible for these
deaths, when in reality, that is not the case. The coverage of this protest leads readers to an overly
simplistic view of the drug war and does not give an accurate view of just how messy the drug war
has become. The second filter addresses advertising revenue and how that could skew the coverage
of a particular topic. This second filter is related strongly to the first, but has more direct
implications especially as it related to the drug war and its coverage. Advertising has little to do with
the drug war, and as such, it is difficult to find much coverage of the issues surrounding it. There has
been a fair amount of coverage of the drug war as it relates to the 43 missing students and the
protests surrounding it. However, most of the coverage is focusing on the

percent of the wealth was controlled by one percent of the population. The name Occupy Wall Street
began because the protestors were occupying the space outside of Wall Street through setting up

Due to the scattered and non–hierarchical organization of Occupy Wall Street, it is unclear how
many sexual assaults occurred in the Occupy camps. There is no official data from the camps and
many women in the camps decided to deal with the perpetrators on their own rather than reporting
to the police. However, the actual number of assaults are not necessary for this research because the
news media made this issue into a pressing concern and presented it as a crisis to the point where
Occupy Wall Street released the statement "Transforming Harm & Building Safety: Confronting
Sexual Violence At Occupy Wall Street & Beyond" about sexual assaults in the camp

narrative of sexual assaults during the Occupy Wall Street protests.
How the media covers sexual assaults creates serious implications for how society responds to
sexual assault. Because individuals both receive and interpret knowledge from the media, the
messages media shape help the public create informed opinions on social issues. Due to society
taking mainstream news coverage to be objective and truthful, the messages society learns from
news coverage of sexual assault have serious effects on survivors. These effects include how likely a
survivor is to come forward with his or her assault, what people's attitudes are about sexual assault
and how the public

Social Media And International News Coverage
Terrorist attacks occur around the globe, but how does the location and the target affect the world's
response to the attack? The following will investigate two attacks that occurred in two very different
parts of the world at relatively the same time and the reasons for the disparity in their attention on
social media and international news coverage. The 2015 Baga Massacre occurred January 3–7 in the
Nigerian town of Baga. The series of mass killings was committed by Boko Haram, a Salafi jihadist
group. Boko Haram raided the regional Multinational Joint Task Force base, then turned on the
locals. Grabbing their machetes, a group of young men fought the attackers off, but a few hours
later, Boko Haram fighters returned with increased numbers and opened fire, forcing everyone to
run. As many as 15,000 people fled to Chad with another 5,000 seeking refuge 100 miles away in
the capital Maiduguri (Fessy). Disputes exist about the number of fatalities, with estimates varying
from 150 to 2,000 deaths, part of this indeterminacy is that the government did not make an effort to
solidify the death toll and no one stayed behind to count the bodies after Boko Haram ravaged the
city (Fessy). On January 7, 2015, two brothers Saïd and Chérif Kouachi attacked the French satirical
newspaper offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris. The newspaper was known for printing satirized
versions of religious and political figures and printed controversial depictions of the Prophet
Muhammad, which was the

Abstract
Sports fans usually acknowledge various sports through different mass media outlets. To develop
our comprehension of social qualities inserted in sports and to investigate current values and power
structures in regards to men and women, it is important to explore the potential impact that media
may have in manipulating conventions about gender–appropriate sport conduct. One question that
will be answered is, does mass media influence the beliefs about gender–appropriate sport behavior
during the broadcast of various sports? To help answer this question three sets of participants are
going to be involved. Ranging from 16 to 26 years of age, the sets will include individuals who have
ample knowledge regarding various sports, individuals who have no–in–depth knowledge, and
finally individuals who are active athletes throughout various levels like high school, college, and
professional leagues. These individuals will view interviews, and coverage of different athletes,
sports and events present in the Olympics. Following the exposure to the various segments,
participants will complete a questionnaire and a survey regarding their experience during the
viewing. With an international aspect and various races, cultures, and genders a change in both the

has the power of fast deliverance of information, reproducing to an audience of mass quantity, and
ability to distort the candidates' authenticity. Though it largely relies on the campaign contribution
that gets the attention of the media. However, it is the media that is more important in determining
the likely success of a presidential candidate because of their coverage on a stimulating competitive
race, complexive variety of biases, and techniques on issue framing. There are claims that
perceptions of public support bring with them financial contributions. News emphasizing who is
ahead or behind, gaining or losing, is the primary cause of how people "develop perceptions of the
extent of mass support for candidates" (Mutz 1015). One way in which media portrayals of public
support are important in determining the nature of campaigns is through their "influence on
candidates' abilities to attract contributors and ultimately, to finance a competitive race" (Mutz
1016). By encouraging mass fundraising efforts aimed at attracting many small donations from large
number of individuals, "changes in campaign finance regulations have further enhanced the
importance of mass media in the process" (Mutz 1016). In the 1988 Democratic primary and pre–
primary period, all the presidential

The Olympic Games and Media Coverage
A very popular and large sporting event that receives an extremely high volume of national media
coverage is the Olympic Games. For a number of years, major stations like NBC has provided
audiences with an around the clock coverage of the Games. Many other major medias similar to
NBC have also done the same by devoted sections solely to the Olympic Games. The Olympics is a
time where citizens come together to root for their home country, strengthening their sense of
nationalism and pride and cheering for their home athletes to come out victoriously and the country
as a powerhouse of the world. Organically, the games give off a sense of war like mentality because
countries are competing against each other for the prize, the gold metal. ... Show more content on

They did recognize the negative attention they have been receiving as a country and therefore
slightly attempted to address many of them with the opening ceremony where millions of people

"transforming into an advanced nation." They also acknowledge a mistake they made when the
Olympic snowflakes failed to open, however they confidently fixed their error by covering it by
using rehearsal footage when it was being podcasted live. This resonated with me because it was a
way of saying that as a nation they are resilient and can overcome anything that comes their way.
The Russian newspapers were more critical of themselves then I expected them to be, they did
mention the disapproval the government had received for the amount of money spent for the
Olympics. However similarly to the New York Times the message overall was to convey a
nationalistic attitude, pride, and to change the reputation of the country around the world through "

Media Coverage Of Disability Essay
Thoughts on Media Coverage of Disability Sport
Currently the Paralympics are occurring until September 18th so it is fitting that in Accelerated
composition we read an article entitled "Media Representations of Disability Sport." I have
personally always been interested in the Paralympics as it is something different that is covered by
the media, but after discussing this article in class and with other friends I have come to the
realization that this fascination with the Paralympics is not generally shared. Half of the people I
conversed with over disability sport did not even know that the Paralympics actually occurred and
this article covers the reasons for the lack of understanding of disability sport pretty well. Using this
article as well as personal knowledge and understanding I am going to dive into why the
understanding of disability is so low. I think the title of the article hits the nail right on the head as it
is the media that "shapes the representation of social issues," but why does the media barely cover
the Paralympics? Okay, yes, NBC does broadcast the Paralympics but when the Olympics were
airing a month ago there was always channels playing different events, news articles about
everything from backstories to placements, commercials with the athletes, and a constant
conversation about them: "Did you see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some people suggest putting the Paralympics before the Olympics and airing them in August, but
this would reduce the income of the Olympics probably because it reduce the hype, so the
broadcasting networks would not want to do this. Also, airing the Paralympics on off years would be
expensive as the Paralympics use the same stadiums as the Olympics so the stadiums would have to
be kept usable between the two. Logically speaking there is no way to get more coverage of the
Paralympics until the stigma against the disabled is reduced as the monetary cost of any other way
to get people more hyped for the Paralympics is too

Media Coverage On The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War introduced many new forms of technology on and off of the battlefield. Increased
weaponry helped shape the outcome of the war, but media coverage also played a large role in
representing the news and opinions of the war. Viet Thanh Nguyen's The Sympathizer helps
illustrate how the media influences and spreads the opinions of the people during the Vietnam War.
The war media, which includes newspapers, movies, and most importantly television, caters towards
its audience. What the media publishes shapes the public opinion, and the media creates their stance
based on the profit they receive.
The media reports on material that will produce the largest viewership. War coverage is the most
profitable form of news that these news sites cover, so when a war is being fought, they cover the
war almost exclusively to gain a large audience. CNN saved their company from going bankrupt by
exclusively showing coverage of the Iraq War in 1991; now they are a multibillion dollar business
venture. Television media such as CNN and FOX News cover positive stories and news, but the
negative news gains them the largest audience, which translates to the largest revenue. The primary
drive for these media networks is profit and market shares rather than upholding high journalistic
standards. The government knows how popular these shows are during war and they use these
shows to their advantage to sway the public opinions and support of the war. They can't necessarily
control the shows

Media Coverage Of The Election Essay
While the media coverage of the presidential election as a game has given the media a great deal of
power in deciding who the president will be, the media does not choose who they will cover
extensively based on who they believe the best president will be. It has been said that, "It's not that
journalists sit back and decide to put their finger on the scale in a way deliberately intended to help a
candidate who captures their fancy. They are in it for the story, though the political impact is real
enough" (Patterson, "News Coverage of the 2016 Presidential Primaries: Horse Race Reporting Has
Consequences). Additionally, Politicus USA stated that, Broadcast network news is a for–profit

Now, it seems that media coverage is the opposite. News stories today are ones that involve
scandals, polls, and the personal lives of the candidates rather than policies and issues. It is
concerned more with profit than it is with educating the American people well, so they can make an
informed decision. Today's media has deteriorated in value to the public who wish to choose the best
president for America, but has increased in value to the news networks, who make a large amount of
money off the presidential election. The media has become a calculating business firm, who chooses
what stories to run based on the money the stories will bring in rather than which story is more
important. And, the stories that are making the most money, are those that entertain the American
people. Therefore, the media has become biased toward stories that entertain rather than send an
important message. Thus, the coverage of the presidential election has little value in

Television Coverage And Alternative Media Coverage
The difference in mass media coverage and alternative media coverage is that mass media focuses
more on a broader relationship between the Call of Duty franchise and the USDoD; however,
alternative media goes more in–depth to the subject. When accessing mass media sources, their
content often filled with positive 'takes' of the subject because they are usually funded by the
company. For instance, game developers would not want bad reviews of their content out on mass
media sources like CNN because it reduces the profit. Also it appeals to most retailers, such as
Gamestop, Wal–Mart, or Target. On the other hand, alternative media gives a more closely look of
the contents of the game. The Call of Duty franchise – in this case, Advanced Warfare – and the
USDoD have been working with each other in making the FPS game. The technology applied in the
game are currently ideas from the USDoD. For example, the weapons, the exoskeleton, and the
style. They are ideas from DARPA as well. There are many different technologies presented in
Advance Warfare. For instance, the use of the Tac–19, which blast energy instead of slug or
buckshot. These type of technology is influence by the USDoD or DARPA because without their
collaborations of such weapons, Advance Warfare may result to using weapons available today. For
example, assault rifles like the M–19 or Scar–H. Noam Chomsky's propaganda model, from

Abstract
Media coverage over the years has expanded quickly with the help of new age technology, forcing
today's society on total reliance of media coverage. With the news in the palm of our hands, we are
constantly being updated on worldwide dilemmas every second, but who takes advantage of
coverage? Using coverage for the downfall of others or to help them prosper. As I have channeled
my research on how politics, uses both negative and positive coverage to assist them during
elections and small businesses and major corporation needing media coverage to be viewed as

Various types of media coverage exist and some of these can be used in a good way while others
may be used in a bad way. It is common, before to the Second World War, for governments to use
the media to make other(s) countries look bad and during that time, media wasn't as advanced as it is
now. The types of media coverage was very limited, still media could be used to help the downfall
of a world leader and its country.
Political Figures and Major Companies
Many politicians, if not all I believe use the media to its upmost advantage – for better and worst.
Media and politics will always go hand in hand. Politicians rely on the media to get the exposure
they need to win elections. Reporters and journalist are demanded to cover the people chosen to lead
government. But in election years, people who work in media should prepare themselves for the
manipulation they 'll likely face when a politician 's quest for office runs suddenly into the media 's
eagerness to seek the truth. The way for a candidate to get media coverage is to invite reporters to a
news conference for a mandatory announcement. That announcement could be the same over
exaggerated economic idea that has been discussed plenty of times. These conferences are to get you
there to cover the candidate.
Senator Trent Lott, was on his way of becoming majority leader of the U.S Senate. In 2002 of

Essay on Mass Media Coverage of Presidential Election
Mass media coverage of the U.S. presidential election involves two key elements– news reporting
and paid advertising. Combined they make the media an important and influential factor in the
election process. The media depends upon the campaigns for both news and revenues. The
candidates then rely upon the media to get in touch with the largest number of voters possible. The
Media has a " very powerful and justifiable role"
(Fullerton–1) to play in presidential elections and can actually dictate a campaign agenda. "It is the
media's job to sort of be the watchdog
(Fullerton–1)." Their job is basically to ferret out the truth and sniff out the ... Show more content on

"Such shows really impact the viewing audience due to the voters chance at speaking directly to the
candidate and expressing their own views." (Gorin–1)
The presidential debates are probably the most important media events covered in a campaign
because voters can see how candidates react in stressful situations and can read numerous articles
analyzing the debate after they occur. The debates basically allow the candidates to go head to head
with one another and see who can handle themselves more efficiently and who has the most going
for them.
As far as coverage, newspapers usually provide more material to the campaign than does television,
due to the large amount of reporters able to cover the campaign as well as less cost and time
restraints as TV.
Newspapers also have the benefit of "corrective journalism" (Gorin–2).
"Instead of printing a candidate's statement one day, an oppositions rebuttal the next and a related
opinion piece the third day, journalists have the capability to include charges, countercharges,
background research and analysis all in the same article.
However, Louis Wolfson, a professor at American University says " In a larger sense, I don't think
the media sent the agenda for a campaign he said.
I think the politicians do, because they try to campaign on the issues they are going to be most
successful with and to avoid the ones

The Role Of Media Coverage On The Media
While analysing media ownership, it resulted clear how proprietorial influence plays an important
role in citizens' lives. It is not just a matter of controlling the news outcome but it also directly
influences politics where media coverage is essential for the spreading of ideas. Regarding this
topic, the perfect example in position of power is Rupert Murdoch, a man whose only cravings are
power and control, a man who has built an empire from the ground earning a position of
international respect and importance. He has become the face of the news, or more accurately, the
man behind the news. Every single person that works for him is subjected to is halo of influence
even when he is not around. Politicians fear his power because it can affect their careers, freedom of
the press activists sill dream of the day his massive empire will disaggregate. Today's news is overall
influenced by five major companies; therefore, the questions arises spontaneously: can we trust what
we read? Media ownership, as concentration of power in the hands of one individual, is considered
antidemocratic because it restricts media diversity and becomes an issue for social justice and
democracy itself (Freedman, 2012). For instance Silvio Berlusconi, ex Italian Prime Minister,
'maintains control of all but one of the country's national TV channels and a sizable piece of its
publishing industry while holding office' (Randall, 2015) making impossible for the citizen to rely
on the news as it was

The Media 's Influence On Media Coverage
Introduction
According to Wikipedia website state a media circus is a news event where the media coverage is
perceived to be out of proportion to even being to be covered. Examples of media circuses include
the Sandy Hook School Shooting, Casey Anthony Trial, and Kitty Genovese Murder. However, one
of the media circus that the media has been focusing on is Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus is seen as one
of the outrageous celebrities who caused the media to symbolize her as a promiscuous in the media
and is therefore seen as a norm violator.
Background Destiny Hope Cyrus, also known as "Miley Cyrus," was born on November 23, 1992,
and is presently a singer and actress. In 2006, she started her career as a pop star at the age of 15,

For example, Miley Cyrus is a person who violates the norms of a society.
Norm Violation #1 Over the years, Miley Cyrus has made insolent, racist comments during her
interviews and television appearances. Throughout American history, America has always been a
nation of immigrants. Much less at a young age, one learns to treat others the way one wants to be
treated with respect, regardless of skin color, so forth. The media have portrayed this norm violation
towards Miley Cyrus, which has received negative backlash. If people look at Miley Cyrus' "Don 't
Stop" video, she has received several negative comments about how she does not understand
cultural appropriation. According to Splicetoday, during an interview with Professor Akil Houston,
Wilbert L. Cooper identified what Miley Cyrus did in her "Don't Stop" music video as a hand
gesture that indicates "eating the other" in black culture. Furthermore, in the 2015 MTV Video
Music Awards, Miley Cyrus has used the word "mammy" in a skit, which has caused the media,
audience, and even celebrities to give criticisms about Miley Cyrus using the term "mammy." For
example, Chance the Rapper, a musician tweeted: "I think shorty said "my real mammy."
Additionally, on social media had issues with Miley using the term "mammy." Such as one viewer
tweeted: "The most uncomfortable, racist, confusing, POS award show I have ever seen."

Unequal Media Coverage In Sports
This article talked about the daunting unequal media coverage in sports of male sports teams in
comparison to females. They researched the true differentiations of coverage between men and
women sports. The actual percentage difference of coverage of male vs female sports discovered in
their research truly is unfathomable. Men's sports receive 96.3% of the airtime, women's sports
1.6% and gender neutral topics were 2.1%. When you think back about twenty years ago and the
coverage of media people tend to think that America is generally trending positively forward,
however that is not the case for the coverage of women's athletics. It has actually gone down since
then. Although on the scarce occasion that they are feature in the news, more often than not they are
conveyed in the stereotypical way: as wives, girlfriends, or mothers. When media is highlighting
these aspects instead of their talent, hard work or success it takes away from their image as an

media coverage affects the NFL players, (2) the players' perceptions of media personnel, and (3) the
athletes' perception of black quarterbacks. The study of the experienced media reporters' meetings

Media Coverage Of Women In Sports
A major impact on the lack of financial investments in women sports and women athletes is the lack
of media coverage that women sports and athletes receive. Media coverage is very important to the
career of an athlete and especially, the popularity of a sports team. Women's sports are often
overshadowed by the media coverage of men's sports. This is one of the reasons why women's
sports and female athletes still receive far less corporate sponsorship and fewer advertising dollars
than their male counterparts.
When speaking of women's sports, men's sports, media coverage and sponsorships, many will think
of sports leagues where things are very similar for both genders like the NBA and WNBA.

what they can do on a more consistent basis and it was more positive. If people are only able to see
small and short stints of what is happening in the world of female sports, then they won't be able to
ever really change their minds on what they think about them. If the media even used half of the two
percent to speak about things other than a female athlete's body or facial features when they do
speak about them, then women's sports would be able to gain a few more admirers. If the focus was
on their talents they would be respected as athletes instead of dainty ladies who don't know anything

Essay about Discrepancy in Media Coverage
The discrepancies in media coverage in coverage of female and children athletics have large gaps,
but are gaining momentum in sharing equality. Major athletic leagues such as the NBA and FIFA
World Cup have wide gaps in marketing and ratings for their male and female athletes. Children are
future athletes and superstars, but as funding and coverage in athletics catering to the males, women
are breaking the barriers to be in the spotlight of sport. Both gender contribute equally to athletics,
and challenge the each other to accept new ideas and change. The sports world that has a single
gender dominating the media is unjust. Society does not want to bored, we need change in sports

As a result, there are few females in sporting activities in the media. Hence, female students never
have role models to idolize in sports.
Boys find several sources of motivation to participate in sports. However, the discrepancy in media
coverage is getting better with time. There is a realization of the importance of balanced attention
with regard to gender in sports programs. Therefore, there are increased efforts to ensure that several
sport programs show women participating in games. This will lead to a better perception of sports
by girls. Eventually, girls will change their attitude about sports.
While significant changes have been made towards equity in athletics, we must still continue to
watch and record our progress and make sure that our society's young women have the rights and
opportunities that we all have as human beings. A study shows that high school girls still receive
almost 1 million fewer opportunities to play sports than high school as boys do (Andrew 329). The
difference between media coverage of males and females has a corresponding effect on the
participation of girls in sports activities, it is difficult for girls to have role models as athletes as few
are marketed in the mainstream of media.
Media forums have always been instrumental in preparing a platform for the activities of the society.

News Media and the Coverage of Darfur
News Media and the Coverage of Darfur Our news media is as celebrity–obsessed as the rest of the
nation. And why shouldn't it be? The articles and television news coverage of celebrities is going to
sell a lot more magazines and draw in a lot more viewers than something depressing and/or hard to
understand like a genocide. Let's face it, when people come home from a long, hard day at work,
they want to be entertained, not forced to think of the bad things happening in the world. Plus,
thanks to a sub–par educational system in the United States that "teaches to the test" and lets
important subjects such as geography and social sciences fall by the wayside, many people don't
even know where these places are that are experiencing humanitarian crises. They can't be expected
to be interested in places of which they have never heard. This, at least, is the common perception
among the media today. In 2005, the collective news media channels of this country ran 55 times as
many stories about Michael Jackson and his trial for alleged child sexual abuse than they did
regarding the genocide going on in Darfur. In fact, MTVu, which is the university station for MTV,
did a more thorough job of covering Darfur than any of the major media outlets in the United States.
Further, while the news media in other countries, most notably the BBC in Great Britain, do a
generally good job of covering important world events (proving it can be done), the news media in
the United States tends to

Media Coverage Of Presidential Election
Our society's focus is short and poorly aimed. An example of this, and its end result. is the current
process of the presidential election. Unfortunately, many are dissatisfied with the end result of our
presidential candidates. Perhaps this is simply the fault of the people. Media will only cover what
the people demand to see, the people are far more likely to follow/support a presidential candidate
who has significant media coverage. By demanding coverage of the most "entertaining" candidates,
we have eliminated their opponents. The people have focused so much of their attention on those
who provided a spectacle that worthier candidates were neglected by the media and therefore
eliminated from the process. A second example of this is

Unfortunately, not all the information accessed is about stats of players and teams, but rather about
the athlete's personal life, which is not always true. The downside of having 24/7 media coverage
available, is how news outlets tend to focus primarily on the athlete's personal and private life, and
less on their skill set. Often times, media focuses on the bad actions or statements an athlete has

Widespread Media Coverage Of Mass Shootings

  • 1. Widespread Media Coverage Of Mass Shootings For this current event, I chose to read the article titled, Widespread media coverage contributing to rise in mass shootings, say psychologists, by Jess Staufenberg. In this article Jess elaborates on the idea proposed by psychologists that giving mass shooters the fame they desire in the media is contributing to their rise. Staufenberg begins by highlighting the reasons the media is being looked at as the root cause of the problem. Mass shootings are escalating as well as the mass coverage of them due to higher ratings and advertiser sales. As a result of the media covering an abundance of mass shooting stories, young adults have been found to be obsessed with those mass murderers and have actually replicated their behavior. • 3. The Effect Of Media Coverage On The Thinking And Behavior... Abstract This paper explores published articles that report on results from research conducted on various methods of persuasion. The articles, however, vary in their definitions and utilization of the methods of persuasion and their relationship with consumers. Based on psychological principles that direct human behavior, Robert Cialdini's (2007), 6 principals of persuasion suggests that face to face interactions are most effective in emphasizing knowledge and authority. This paper examines Berger and Berger's (2012) scientific research evidence to substantiate the major role of technology and mass media in the persuasion of consumers. The use of persuasion to control people for the sole benefit of the persuader is examined in Ridout and Franz's (2011) research of persuasive ads and who is affected by ad exposure. This book also presents evidence to support this research. Shen and Dillard's (2013) research suggests mass media contributes great influence on the thinking and behavior of consumers' and is scientifically proven to be the universal source of information. This paper will examine the impact of media coverage of elections and how it persuades the electorates ' behavior, it will explore the effects of mass media on political power and show how media simultaneously disrupts and defends the status quo, including the advantages and disadvantages during election campaigns. Shrum's (2012) research suggests that marketers integrate products in the media by injecting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Media Coverage Of The Media Lindsay Lohan. Britney Spears. Winona Ryder. Farrah Fawcett. The preceding list of people all have a few things in common. Most noticeable is the fact that they are all contemporary celebrities and women. However, these celebrities share another common trait that will be of much more relevance in the discussion that will follow: they have all been given the label of kleptomaniac at one point or another in the public eye due to being caught shoplifting at least once. To be fair, diagnoses made by tabloids and the media are of much less substance than medical diagnosis. It is plausible that one or more of the celebrities mentioned above who were caught shoplifting were not stealing out of a recurrent and compulsive urge. Regardless, whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is a case of a man who would not eat unless his food was stolen, so a servant would take pains to hide the man's food in such a manner that the man could "steal" it and eat rather than die from starvation. One woman was so afflicted with the compulsion to steal that she would not hesitate in stealing offerings and tithes from church baskets at the altar. An otherwise upstanding woman was such a helpless thief that she would steal bread from her friends' dinner table if there was nothing else more valuable to be had. There is even record of a clergyman whose kleptomania was so notorious that the Church eventually had to cut ties with him. A British lady, presumably of high society, was prosecuted for stealing handkerchiefs from a clothing store; the Times which reported on the case insinuated that recurrent and compulsive theft of cheap items from shops is quite common among the ladies of high society in London. This behavior was so well–known that family members arranged a well–coordinated effort with drivers and shopkeepers to keep tabs on their thieving ladies and to make sure that the shopkeepers got reimbursed. Sometimes the thief herself would be the one writing the check that the shopkeepers would inevitably send to their home. One of the causes of kleptomania appears to be general insanity. The behavior is so compulsive, that people who are otherwise upstanding and moral in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If the nation's leaders believes in why they are fighting a war the Country willbe more likely to give their support and motivated to stay in the fight for the long haul. Edward R. Murrow, former reporter for CBS once said, "We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. • 9. Media Coverage Of Women In Sports Essay The article advances to examine the extent of media coverage in sports targeting female athletes. C.A. Tuggle claims, shows like Sports Center allocate less than five percent of the coverage on the show to women's sports (Qtd in Hallmark and Armstrong 224). This reaffirms what I already knew about coverage and female athletes. Shows centered around sports have an uneven distribution of coverage. Females in basketball has the highest coverage among all sports played by women at one percent of the coverage. Armstrong brings up a valid argument, "Televising women's games less often than men's games and in particular, producing them in a less appealing fashion than men's games, creates a cycle wherein poor coverage begets minimal advertising interest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Utilizing what I just learned from the previous articles I decided to type "Sports spectatorship" in the search engine. I discovered an article called, "Women's Sport Spectatorship: An Exploration of Men's Influence," This study examined women's perspective on what's considered as "men's sports". Many women who were interviewed at men's basketball games all repeated that they haven't gone to a women's basketball game in a while or maybe never. A woman named Hannah was interviewed and she acknowledged that she could name statistics and names of basketball players on the top of her head but had little to no knowledge on women's basketball. She basically restated the same predicament I was in. Another interviewee named Claire reiterated and confirmed what I already learned that women's basketball is an unknown phenomenon and ties it back to the media's involvement in the situation. The most interesting part was when Hannah was interviewed, and she had stated my feelings exactly on women's basketball. This indicates that there is a recurring theme, but not just women but people in general are not being exposed to women in basketball and it's no wonder that there is such a wide gap of pay between the two ... ISIS has begun to expand its borders into Afghanistan; which in turn, is causing the remaining followers of Al Aqidah to join ISIS. Covering the "War on Terror" is a big opportunity for both sides of the campaign, so it is crucial to know whether or not people are getting accurate coverage from the media. The media covering this campaign is depicting accurate coverage, because the media provides information about ISIS by interviewing people who have been affected by ISIS, videoing live ISIS attacks and Yazidi rescue operations, and filming how ISIS is training their followers. Firstly, the media provides accurate coverage on ISIS, because they interview the victims of ISIS. The majority of the people that were interviewed were women, because ISIS uses them as slaves and are treated very poorly. For example, in the video "Escaping ISIS", a young Yazidi women was interviewed about how ISIS treats their captures. She explained that they would rape several women over the course of a week. • 13. Media Coverage of Homicides Essay Media coverage of news events can be disseminated to the general public in any number of different ways and media biases often "reflects certain organizational and/or professional preferences or values" (Bennett 2011, 173). In fact, Lundman (2003) points out "that journalists assess the newsworthiness of homicides occurrences using the relative frequency of particular types of murders and how well specific murder occurrences mesh with stereotypical race and gender typifications (357)." In addition, Johnson (2012) felt that the real job of media was to "create a message that...grabs public attention (62)." In other words, can the media grab the public's attention and hold it? Take for example the recent case of George Zimmerman and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The general public became inundated with every detail of the trial and national leaders began weighing in on the guilt or innocence of the defendant, George Zimmerman. Why? Was it the general public's fascination with the players in the tragedy or the media's basis towards this homicide? Bennett (2011) points out; "that people in the middle see the press as generally neutral, whereas those on the left complain that the news is too conservative, and those on the right think the news has a left–leaning bias (176)." Lundman (2003) pointed to the fact that "not all murders...are selected for coverage by news media (358)." And, that "when murders are selected, some receive frequent and prominent attention, while others receive infrequent and obscure coverage (358)." In fact, during the time frame of George Zimmerman's trial there were other murders involving race and gender. One can only wonder then, "do some homicides therefore receive more attention and others less because of the race and gender of the actors involved (Lundman, 2003, 358)?" Throughout ... • 15. 9/11 Media Coverage Everyone can remember, vividly in their mind, where they were on September 11th, 2001. Fourteen years later, and even though I was in third grade, at the time, I clearly remember the day. The September 11th attacks (9/11) were a series of coordinated terrorist attacks which targeted symbolic United States' landmarks. Islamic terrorist group, al–Qaeda, hijacked planes and crashed them into these landmarks– The World Trade Center's Twin Towers and The Pentagon being two of the biggest. These events left almost three thousand people dead. It is a tragic day, which we solemnly reflect on every year (History.com Staff 1). The details and the attack, itself, are shocking and devastating. However, with every day in age, what tends to be most striking, is how the media handled the event and how the media landscape was transformed. Compared to most of today's coverage, the news of the 9/11 attacks spread like wildfire. When people had gotten word that the first plane hit the World Trade Center, many immediately turned on their televisions. Television news seemed to have been the most popular source of news among the people. • 17. Media Coverage Of Crime Statistics Crime statistics are been used by individuals, groups in society and government as a source of information about the nature and extent of crime, locally and nationally. Crime statistics and media coverage of statistics is used by government as a basis and justification for their criminal justice policies in order to respond to crime effectively. A good example of this is the drug classification policy in England and Wales whereby changing media coverage of incidents of the usage of cannabis influenced the government to move the drug from class B to C in 2004, and back to class B in 2009. Crime statistics helped the public to know how much crime, and which particular type of crime are in a particular area. For example, how much crime is in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Media Coverage On The Assassination Of Jfk Media Coverage on the Assassination of JFK: The Past and Present Watching media coverage in the past, during the first few hours after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, I found some interesting points during the presentation from the news reporters. First, their lack of emotion shows that news coverage was very straight forward and to the point. They read through the teleprompter like a flat lined story. If this occurred today, I know I would see news reporters expressing the news in a more passionate manner, depending on how they would like to steer the information given. • 21. Media Coverage Of Childhood Obesity Media coverage contributes to how childhood obesity is framed and stigmatized in Canadian society. The media contributes to changes in popular culture, which can affect how the dilemma of childhood obesity is viewed and addressed. Several forms of media, including campaigns, social media, and the news help to construct popular opinions when looking at the issue. The views provided by different media platforms and organizations help to frame the problem of childhood obesity, and address the problems associated with the dilemma. First, media coverage of childhood obesity can be seen from organizations such as the Childhood Obesity Foundation. The organization's purpose is "...to lead a societal shift toward healthy eating and active lifestyles to promote childhood healthy weights and the resulting physical and emotional impacts" (Childhood Obesity Foundation 2015). The mission statement promotes the idea that childhood obesity could cause unhappiness and sickness for children, and that society needs to change in order to address the issue. A section on the website addresses the current obesogenic environment of society, which it describes as "...places that encourage people to eat unhealthily and not exercise enough" (Childhood Obesity Foundation 2015). • 23. Media Coverage Of Mass Violence Analysis When news outlets document media in great detail, such as a shooting or a suicide, by the news and other media, according to the article "Media coverage of mass violence" page 1, "there is a two– week period following in which imitations become significantly more likely." (1) This is called the contagion effect. To circumvent this, media reporters should follow guidelines, such as being more brief with their report, or omitting the person's information. News reporters are quick to jump onto bandwagons to report media, but in their efforts to get news out to viewers quickly and clearly, they may be unintentionally setting the stage for others to commit the same act. Many are influenced by something, whether it be a movie, song, or another person's actions. How do they get inspired by someone else's actions though? The media. Their uncensored coverage of any and all news seems to be feeding off of itself by causing even more tragedies, which keeps the cycle going. What can be done about this death trend that news reporters unknowingly keep going? According to the Global Terrorism Database there have been 8,441 listed terrorist attacks in 2012 a staggering increase of 7,046 from the figure recorded in 1998 (Doward, 2015).As terrorist groups seek to expand their agendas through media , causalities approximately in the past 15 years have soared from 3,387 to 15,396. Though some groups still persist that are by and large are politically motivated for instance, ETA, Hamas and Hezbollah. It is difficult to singularly define terrorism, as the concept itself is much disputed in society. It can be interpreted as a method of repeated violence by groups, individuals or state actors, for idiosyncratic or political reasons by creating feelings of apprehension and uncertainty (Jongman, A. J, 1988). Albert Jongman selecting the stated United Nations definition 1992, in spite of identifying 109 other definitions. The United Nations definition was preferred to others due to its authority as a political intergovernmental organisation. The definition states both reasons for terrorist activity which is crucial in relation to whether religion is an effective source of crime prevention. The apparent shift in the nature of terrorism clearly demonstrates that religion generates further acts of criminality. • 27. The CNN Effect: The Media and Crime Coverage The Media and Crime Coverage Introduction The manner in which mainstream media depicts various aspects of American life has a correspond effect on how these events are perceived by the American public. When isolated media events are sensationalized, these depictions can result in misperceptions and fear, especially when they involve issues that have personal implications for viewers such as crime. To gain some fresh insights into these issues, this paper examines how CNN covers crime in its productions such as "The Situation Room" with Wolf Blitzer as well as its other productions. A review of the relevant literature concerning these issues from a criminological perspective is followed by a summary of the research and important findings in the conclusion. Review and Analysis Across the board, major news networks exert an enormous amount of influence over public thought in the United States. Some major news networks, though, appear to exert more than their fair share of influence on American public thought. In fact, in what has been termed "the CNN effect," the ability of this news organization to influence public thought and even national lawmakers has become the source of growing concern by some observers (Robinson, 2002). According to Robinson, "The original CNN effect referred to the ubiquity of the channel (so that all sides were using the same information source and originated during the 1991 Gulf War. • 29. Western Media And Its Coverage Of Terrorism If a child grows up on the false conviction that the world is flat, like a map, s/he will believe it until proven otherwise. When s/he is presented with a three dimensional sphere, s/he will deny that the object is an accurate portrayal of the world, because all s/he knows is that the world is flat. But if another child grows up on the true conviction that the world can be viewed flat as well as three– dimensional, then being presented with the a globe, s/he will accept that both are legitimate ways to view Earth. This is the same principle that follows Western media and their coverage of terrorism. The U.S. media continues to remain loyal to a deceitful standard of terrorism, presenting the entire country with an invalid perception of terrorism in the Middle East. This coverage reaches all demographics nation wide and raises a misguided population. America is a democratic society where the power is vested in it's people. It is imperative that we educate our nation to be globally contestant and accurately knowledgeable. People may question the relation between terrorism and American media; the two are more closely analogous than anyone can really comprehend. Terrorism and media have a symbiotic relationship that has a grand scale influence on millions– creating a singular image of the victims and perpetrators to a national audience, which in turn forms stereotypes and stigmas. • 31. The Effects Of Mass Media Coverage On Society Throughout history, mass media coverage, which is most common in developed nations, has been a key benefactor, among several factors, that has influenced science, public policy, knowledge, and aptitude. A poll conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and Press found in the United States that television ranks number one as the leading source of daily news followed by newspapers, radio, and the internet. Knowledge has never been so easily accessible than it is now, with the latest news being available to us, whenever and usually wherever. We are able to communicate with others on opposite hemispheres and learn about another country's values and customs without actually going there. Regrettably, due to the media's extensiveness and accessibility it inevitably bears certain problems as it reports information that is inadequate or creates bias. As a society, we should rethink some opinions and investigate numerous perspectives before making judgments in order to avoid prejudice. An intimidating ordeal that has received much attention in the media is climate change caused by global warming. Global warming is a gradual rise in the general temperature of earth's atmosphere due to the greenhouse effect, which is caused by increasing carbon dioxide levels, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. The greenhouse effect occurs when solar radiation that should be reflected back into space, instead becomes trapped in the atmosphere because of the accumulation of greenhouse ... There are a few instances where the media does stray from a strict view of the propoganda model, but they are well within the spirit of the model and fall within the model's application in modern times. This paper will examine the mainstream media's coverage of the drug war, particularly that of the 43 missing students and the Gary Webb controversy, and compare it to the five filters the propoganda model assigns. The first filter deals with the ownership of the media. Since the media is owned by various corporations, it does follow that coverage of the drug war may not be the most popular of topics. According to Pedro, generally stories that do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the coverage of the protests surrounding the 43 missing students by each of the big news outlets focuses on the same issues. Each of the stories published by big media outlets covering the protests hit the same points of the missing students, the drug war death count, and the fault of the Mexican government. None of the articles mentioned the historic U.S. involvement in the drug war. Also, none of the articles from big media gave any sort of context about the protest other than it was on the day the Mexican Revolution is commemorated. Although the protest was covered, a reader who knew nothing about the drug war would assume that Mexico alone is responsible for these deaths, when in reality, that is not the case. The coverage of this protest leads readers to an overly simplistic view of the drug war and does not give an accurate view of just how messy the drug war has become. The second filter addresses advertising revenue and how that could skew the coverage of a particular topic. This second filter is related strongly to the first, but has more direct implications especially as it related to the drug war and its coverage. Advertising has little to do with the drug war, and as such, it is difficult to find much coverage of the issues surrounding it. There has been a fair amount of coverage of the drug war as it relates to the 43 missing students and the protests surrounding it. However, most of the coverage is focusing on the ... Media Coverage on Occupy Wall Street Essay In October of 2011, the media could no longer ignore the thousands of protesters camping in Zuccotti Park calling themselves Occupy Wall Street with their battle cry of "We are the 99 percent" (Gitlin 50). The social movement began to bring awareness on economic inequality in which 99 percent of the wealth was controlled by one percent of the population. The name Occupy Wall Street began because the protestors were occupying the space outside of Wall Street through setting up tents and refusing to leave the location (Gitlin 26). As more and more protestors flocked to the camps, the movement broadened its goals to include a wide variety of issues including agriculture, housing and student loans. Due to the scattered and non–hierarchical organization of Occupy Wall Street, it is unclear how many sexual assaults occurred in the Occupy camps. There is no official data from the camps and many women in the camps decided to deal with the perpetrators on their own rather than reporting to the police. However, the actual number of assaults are not necessary for this research because the news media made this issue into a pressing concern and presented it as a crisis to the point where Occupy Wall Street released the statement "Transforming Harm & Building Safety: Confronting Sexual Violence At Occupy Wall Street & Beyond" about sexual assaults in the camp (www.occupywallst.org). The hype created by news outlets created an opening to explore the narrative of sexual assaults during the Occupy Wall Street protests. How the media covers sexual assaults creates serious implications for how society responds to sexual assault. Because individuals both receive and interpret knowledge from the media, the messages media shape help the public create informed opinions on social issues. Due to society taking mainstream news coverage to be objective and truthful, the messages society learns from news coverage of sexual assault have serious effects on survivors. These effects include how likely a survivor is to come forward with his or her assault, what people's attitudes are about sexual assault and how the public ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The following will investigate two attacks that occurred in two very different parts of the world at relatively the same time and the reasons for the disparity in their attention on social media and international news coverage. The 2015 Baga Massacre occurred January 3–7 in the Nigerian town of Baga. The series of mass killings was committed by Boko Haram, a Salafi jihadist group. Boko Haram raided the regional Multinational Joint Task Force base, then turned on the locals. Grabbing their machetes, a group of young men fought the attackers off, but a few hours later, Boko Haram fighters returned with increased numbers and opened fire, forcing everyone to run. As many as 15,000 people fled to Chad with another 5,000 seeking refuge 100 miles away in the capital Maiduguri (Fessy). Disputes exist about the number of fatalities, with estimates varying from 150 to 2,000 deaths, part of this indeterminacy is that the government did not make an effort to solidify the death toll and no one stayed behind to count the bodies after Boko Haram ravaged the city (Fessy). On January 7, 2015, two brothers Saïd and Chérif Kouachi attacked the French satirical newspaper offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris. To develop our comprehension of social qualities inserted in sports and to investigate current values and power structures in regards to men and women, it is important to explore the potential impact that media may have in manipulating conventions about gender–appropriate sport conduct. One question that will be answered is, does mass media influence the beliefs about gender–appropriate sport behavior during the broadcast of various sports? To help answer this question three sets of participants are going to be involved. Ranging from 16 to 26 years of age, the sets will include individuals who have ample knowledge regarding various sports, individuals who have no–in–depth knowledge, and finally individuals who are active athletes throughout various levels like high school, college, and professional leagues. The media has the power of fast deliverance of information, reproducing to an audience of mass quantity, and ability to distort the candidates' authenticity. Though it largely relies on the campaign contribution that gets the attention of the media. However, it is the media that is more important in determining the likely success of a presidential candidate because of their coverage on a stimulating competitive race, complexive variety of biases, and techniques on issue framing. There are claims that perceptions of public support bring with them financial contributions. News emphasizing who is ahead or behind, gaining or losing, is the primary cause of how people "develop perceptions of the extent of mass support for candidates" (Mutz 1015). One way in which media portrayals of public support are important in determining the nature of campaigns is through their "influence on candidates' abilities to attract contributors and ultimately, to finance a competitive race" (Mutz 1016). By encouraging mass fundraising efforts aimed at attracting many small donations from large number of individuals, "changes in campaign finance regulations have further enhanced the importance of mass media in the process" (Mutz 1016). I have personally always been interested in the Paralympics as it is something different that is covered by the media, but after discussing this article in class and with other friends I have come to the realization that this fascination with the Paralympics is not generally shared. Half of the people I conversed with over disability sport did not even know that the Paralympics actually occurred and this article covers the reasons for the lack of understanding of disability sport pretty well. Using this article as well as personal knowledge and understanding I am going to dive into why the understanding of disability is so low. • 51. Media Coverage On The Vietnam War The Vietnam War introduced many new forms of technology on and off of the battlefield. Increased weaponry helped shape the outcome of the war, but media coverage also played a large role in representing the news and opinions of the war. Viet Thanh Nguyen's The Sympathizer helps illustrate how the media influences and spreads the opinions of the people during the Vietnam War. The war media, which includes newspapers, movies, and most importantly television, caters towards its audience. What the media publishes shapes the public opinion, and the media creates their stance based on the profit they receive. The media reports on material that will produce the largest viewership. War coverage is the most profitable form of news that these news sites cover, so when a war is being fought, they cover the war almost exclusively to gain a large audience. CNN saved their company from going bankrupt by exclusively showing coverage of the Iraq War in 1991; now they are a multibillion dollar business venture. Television media such as CNN and FOX News cover positive stories and news, but the negative news gains them the largest audience, which translates to the largest revenue. Today's media has deteriorated in value to the public who wish to choose the best president for America, but has increased in value to the news networks, who make a large amount of money off the presidential election. When accessing mass media sources, their content often filled with positive 'takes' of the subject because they are usually funded by the company. For instance, game developers would not want bad reviews of their content out on mass media sources like CNN because it reduces the profit. Also it appeals to most retailers, such as Gamestop, Wal–Mart, or Target. On the other hand, alternative media gives a more closely look of the contents of the game. The Call of Duty franchise – in this case, Advanced Warfare – and the USDoD have been working with each other in making the FPS game. The technology applied in the game are currently ideas from the USDoD. For example, the weapons, the exoskeleton, and the style. They are ideas from DARPA as well. There are many different technologies presented in Advance Warfare. For instance, the use of the Tac–19, which blast energy instead of slug or buckshot. The debates basically allow the candidates to go head to head with one another and see who can handle themselves more efficiently and who has the most going for them. • 61. The Role Of Media Coverage On The Media While analysing media ownership, it resulted clear how proprietorial influence plays an important role in citizens' lives. It is not just a matter of controlling the news outcome but it also directly influences politics where media coverage is essential for the spreading of ideas. Regarding this topic, the perfect example in position of power is Rupert Murdoch, a man whose only cravings are power and control, a man who has built an empire from the ground earning a position of international respect and importance. He has become the face of the news, or more accurately, the man behind the news. Every single person that works for him is subjected to is halo of influence even when he is not around. Today's news is overall influenced by five major companies; therefore, the questions arises spontaneously: can we trust what we read? Media ownership, as concentration of power in the hands of one individual, is considered antidemocratic because it restricts media diversity and becomes an issue for social justice and democracy itself (Freedman, 2012). The articles and television news coverage of celebrities is going to sell a lot more magazines and draw in a lot more viewers than something depressing and/or hard to understand like a genocide. Let's face it, when people come home from a long, hard day at work, they want to be entertained, not forced to think of the bad things happening in the world. Plus, thanks to a sub–par educational system in the United States that "teaches to the test" and lets important subjects such as geography and social sciences fall by the wayside, many people don't even know where these places are that are experiencing humanitarian crises. They can't be expected to be interested in places of which they have never heard. This, at least, is the common perception among the media today.
