The Importance Of Prosocial Behavior
Humans are inherently social being meaning they naturally tend to live in groups and that can consist of both kin and nonkin. While humans do form
communities there are conflicts that have and will continue to occur because humans possess and exhibit traits both for and against prosocial behavior.
These antisocial traits continue to thrive in humans because it is working in conjunction with other traits that are desired in humans or the trait
themselves yields unexpected, but welcome behavior. Morality, human's conscience that dictates right from wrong, balances these traits and
encourages this prosocial behavior, by enabling important inclinations such as cooperation and altruism that improve human interactions. Generally
speaking, actions that benefit the community will in turn benefit the survival of that individual in the social environments constructed by humans.
While there are methods to both suppress unwanted tendencies and encourage wanted tendencies, Boehm focuses a significant amount on these
suppression techniques. The suppression of such "bad" behavior allows coherency in the group.
This will cover a few key mechanisms of this suppression including the guidelines created by societies, the regulation of them to uphold such ideals
and some of the genetic forces that drive evolution.
An important way to maintain a functioning society is to suppress the individuals who are unable to abide by the social norm and therefore threaten to
disrupt the balance and order of

The Pros And Cons Of Utilitarianism
Many societies seem to be teetering in prosperity, which causes anxiety about future for many individuals. Some call for a society to run on the
principle of utility, others call for individual freedom to be the prime drive to a society, while others call for the collective participation of all the
members of a society to promote its just existence. A good, functional society must do more than the ideas promoted byutilitarianism and liberalism, it
must cultivate good citizens through the process of involvement in the community and debate on moral issues.
The two ideas which fall short in their ability to form a just society are utilitarianism and freedom–based theories. In utilitarianism, the main goal is the
maximization of happiness for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of America, close communities were founded in which everyone either could or had to participate. Present America holds many
individuals which, by one way or another, have passed the civic duties of a citizen and involvement in the politics of their society on to the
governing body over them. The American dream includes a personal collection of material goods and comforts instead of good citizen
characteristics. Social media involves little deep conversations and is instead comprised of superficial, quick communications. With bonds no longer
being available in a public way, the pursuit of personal success and the pursuit of fulfillment of feeling only allow for private connections at most.
Bellah warns, "the culture of separation, if it ever became completely dominant, would collapse of its own incoherence" (281). Bellah encourages
religion as a source of connection in a community where individuals are encouraged to give back to their communities instead of focusing on
themselves. What Bellah describes that truly destroys a society is not wars, it is inactivity: "we have put our own good, as individuals, as groups, as a
nation, ahead of the common good" (285). A test is put on society observing the way in which they handle wealth and poverty – extremes which cannot
exist in a just society. Giving up our individualism does not mean our

Conscience In I Hunt Killers, By Barry Lyga
One or more traumatic events can weaken one's conscience. Conscience is a feeling or voice in one's mind that acts as a guide to the rightness or
wrongness of one's actions. Having a conscience allows you to be able to bring yourself back to reality, to face the truth and take responsibility
over your actions. Traumatic experiences can weaken your conscience so it will no longer be able to keep you in reality. Serial killers, or the
criminally insane lack conscience and that's why they are able to harm one or a bunch of people, without realizing how it affects others. I am
interested in the minds of serial killers who are cold hearted and have no remorse for what they have done. I believe that there is specific reason deep
down hidden behind their heartless persona that has caused them to act a violent way. I take interest in the minds of the criminally insane because they
tend to lose the ability to function mentally due to a traumatic experience or experiences.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Natural Law Theory Vs Utilitarianism
In this paper, I will argue that a combination of Natural Law Theory and Utilitarianism best captures what should be required in terms of respecting
natural rights.
One of the benefits of Utilitarianism is that it looks at what we ought to do, not must do, while keeping in mind the consequences of our actions. On the
negative side, all consequences, short term and long term, must be considered, often making it very difficult to make the ultimately correct decision,
since seeing the future is not a human attribute. Who is to determine what is best? The easy answer is the majority, but this could result in the tyranny
of the majority. One of Natural Law Theory's benefits is that it uses reason to determine social and personal human nature to... Show more content on

Since Utilitarianism is mainly about what ought to be done, when what ought to be done is decided by the majority, and goes against what the
minority believes to be right, the tyranny of the majority is pushed onto the minority. As an example, prior to the 1980's it was common to smoke in
public, at work, and in restaurants. American society's norms changed, and smoking was no longer approved of by the majority. The result was that
millions of smokers, unable or unwilling to quit, were forced to give up their freedom of smoking. While argument that smoking is unhealthy is valid,
smoking was acceptable for over 200 years in America. This also happened with alcohol, with the 18th Amendment banning it in 1920, and Marijuana
being outlawed in 1937.
While on the surface the argument that Natural Rights Theory could lead to anarchy sounds plausible, and Bentham and Burke may have had cause to
state so, eventually the turmoil that may at first seem to be anarchy, eventually does settle down as social contracts are developed, and governments
created. The American Revolution may have seemed like anarchy at the time, but it did develop into a constitutional republic that is now 240 years
old. While France also went through some anarchical times in the 1790's, and did revert to a monarchy for a time, France is still around

Cider House Rules Essay
The 1999 film, "Cider House Rules" is a touching story of morality, issues of life/death, and the violence and suppression to which women are
concerned with, but the law unjustly dictates. The title of the film, after digesting the movie, suggests rules are hard to dictate for a home, when
someone has never lived in it.
Philosophical ethics is the attempt to offer a rational response to the question of how humans should best live. Aristotle regarded ethics and politics as
two related but separate fields of study, since ethics examines the good of the individual, while politics examines the good of the city–state (https:/
/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristotelian_ethics). This movie touches on the different scenarios of lives that make everyone such individuals, sharing a
glimpse of the massive decisions the individuals must make in their life and how people are impacted on society as a whole. How in some cases it
takes a loss of innocence to truly gain the know how to learn a lesson about how to lead a better life.

Larch's words are so relevant to Homer Wells life, the parallels of their positions in society, he has seen many children exist unwanted, which could
have been remedied by their mother's having abortions. Buster, an orphan, is a prime example of a child who, had he been given the option, would
probably have chose to never exist– to have been aborted. This became apparent a few times throughout the movie, initially when he is asked "why
he would want to meet his parents", and he replied "maybe to tell them I can cook a little, or that I can drive, or maybe to kill them." Again, when he
almost drives off the road while listening to Homer's opinion about how "life is a gift," his poor driving indicated that it was a gift that was unwanted
in his eyes and that his home is a literal place where unwanted children exist, the byproduct of women who did not have

When Cheating Is Wrong
I have lied to my parents about my where I have been. I have returned a wallet full of money to I have the lost and found. I have kept driving past a
person on the road if they are having car trouble and when exposed to peer pressure I have decided to abstain from doing drugs. I have made many
moral decisions in my lifetime. Some of them are no–brainers, others take some careful deliberation. One of the moral decisions that I still think about
to this day, is when I cheated in a relationship. An Absolutist would say that cheating is wrong, not matter what the circumstance. A relativist would
think it is wrong only, if the cheater thought it was wrong.. Upon agreeing to be in a relationship with one another, it is understood that going outside t

The Use Of Spyware Into The Diabetes Foundation Website
In this case Jake Markos is the moral agent and is contemplating on whether or not he should embed spyware into the Diabetes Foundation website that
allows his company, ALAC marketing, to collet email addresses and use them to market a product. Other moral agents presented in this case are
Nathan Brook, Jake's boss, Maia Herrick, Nathan's assistant manager, and ALAC Marketing. In this case, ALAC is the least importantmoral agent
because it possess vicarious moral sensitivity and responsiveness thus, if we examine the sensitivity and responsiveness of its individual employees we
would understand ALAC's position regarding Jake's dilemma. This is also, in part, due to the fact that corporations employ highly organized holistic
decision–making and although corporations are morally accountable it does not mean that individuals who are employed by the corporation are not
also morally accountable.
The first question presented in the case is whether or not Jake should embed the spyware. If Jake decides to embed the spyware then he will be
deceiving the Diabetes Foundation by making them believe that the survey does exactly what they want, when really it does more. Although, as stated
in the book, the survey tool does not explicitly state that the donors' anonymity will be protected, the ownership rights over confidential information of

Social Work Philosophy Statement
Life experiences have shaped into wanting to help those who considered less fortunate and are oppressed by systematic rules and regulations. My
personal philosophy of helping is that if individuals and groups in society are provided with the equal opportunities then everyone can become a
productive member of society. If the necessary resources are provided to oppressed groups in society, then the result will be that individuals in those
groups will work hard to become an effective citizen of society. It is my belief that everyone wants to be successful in life and with a little motivation
and support from others they would have the ability to achieve certain goals. Equal Rights and Social Justice are concepts that I stand by and plan to ...

I want to help individuals such as my brothers, specifically minorities youths who get caught up in the system and is underrepresented by the entire
system. Another significant driving force is the fact that I come from a single parent home of low socioeconomic status, where there was an inherent
struggle by my mother to make ends meet. There are so many people out there such as myself, who if they are just given the opportunity and resources
could become a productive member of society and accomplish becoming a successful person.
Professional experiences have also impacted and shaped my philosophy of helping. One specific example is when I attended college in Buffalo,
NY I volunteered for a year at the Hope Refugee Center. It was an intake center for refugees and their families to come and receive services and

Personal Philosophy Of School Social Work
I am interested in school social work. My biggest goal is to work and help neglected children. When volunteering at Bessemer Elementary I got to
see a school social worker in action. Making sure the children weren't being abused, making sure that a child had the necessary needs to grow, and
be successful in, and outside of school. This field has always interesting to me because when I was younger I had a family social worker. She came
to visit my brothers and I after my father passed when it became hard for my mother to take care of all five of us. Every time she came she had a big
smile on her face, and she gave my mother hope that everything would be okay; which is what I want to help someone else with.
A School Social Workeris someone that trained to help students, parents, and sometimes staff with child needs. A school social worker focuses on
providing a great outcome for the child, and the family they are working with. A school social worker can help with mental health which is focusing
on a child who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment, behavioral concerns, making sure the way a child acts or
conducts his/ her self especially toward others, positive behavioral support is a behavior management system used to understand what maintains an
individual's challenging behavior, academic and classroom support may refer to a wide variety of instructional methods, educational services, or school

The Philosophy Of Social Science
Hollis expresses his intention to explore the philosophy of social science of which he categorises into four modes. He attempted to seek for the
acceptable compromises between all and each mode to define a better way of understanding the social world. Hollis clearly states that the key task of
this book is to reflect on the underlying philosophy of social science through the critical examination of the theory and methodology in each approach.
Some of the key questions are; whether the study of social science can use the same method as in natural science, does structure determine an action or
does action determines structure in the process of social changes, and is there such a thing as the universal strategy to help social scientists in
understanding the way of the world. The main theme focuses on Explanation and Understanding with the minor theme of Holism and Individualism.
The book initially gives the impression that each social study approach has its strength and weakness that the combination of approaches would be
beneficial and worth pursuing.
Hollis starts off with the introduction of Structure and Action. The comparative framework is set out by the two social scientists who employ two
different principles; Karl Marx and John Stuart Mills. Determinism is then introduced to further illuminate the difference between these two theories.
Hollis also provides readers with the fundamental feature of Explanation and Understanding. The comparison represented through the

Difference Between Stockholder And Stakeholders
Chapter 11
1.What is the difference between stockholder and stakeholders to a company
A company's stakeholders are individuals or groups with an interest, claim, or stake in the company, in what it does, and in how well it performs. They
include stockholders, creditors, employee customers, the communities in which the company does business, and the general public.
A company's stockholders are usually put in a different class from other stakeholder groups, and for good reason. Stockholders are legal owners and
the providers of risk capital, a major source of the capital resources that allow a company to operate its business. The capital that stockholders provide
to a company is seen as risk capital because there is no guarantee that stockholders will ever recoup their investment and/or earn a decent return.
2.How ethics in any business responds to stakeholders concerns
The ethical issues that strategic managers confront cover many topics, but most are due to a potential conflict between the goals of the enterprise, or
the goals of individual managers, and the fundamental rights of important stakeholders, including stockholders, customers, employees, suppliers,
competitors, communities, and the general public. Stakeholders have basic rights that should be respected, and it is unethical to violate those rights.
Stockholders have the right to timely and accurate information about their investment and it is unethical to violate that right. Customers have the right

Punishment Philosophy: Social Control Functions
Mini Paper 1
Leon Nelson
Liberty University
Punishment Philosophy
Punishments vastly vary in terms of their underlying philosophies and forms. Fundamental punishment philosophies involve deterrence, retribution,
rehabilitation, restoration, and incapacitation. In terms of form, punishments come as either formal or informal depending on the legitimate authority
held by the sanctioning body. While the nature ofpunishment intends to execute various social–control functions, the principles of incapacitation,
retribution, rehabilitation, deterrence, and restoration seem relevant. At that, each philosophy intends to prevent the occurrence of criminal offenses.
Deterrence assumes persuading people against committing crimes and violating laws. This way, deterrence shapes public awareness about what is
wrong and unlawful. Rather than actual punishment, the deterrence philosophy warns and alerts people from the consequences of violating the law.
Obviously, imposing warnings seems more effective than taking formal legal actions. This means that deterrence releases the society from possible
offenders, and therefore omits punishment at all. General deterrence assumes one's decision not to commit a crime at all while a person realizes ... Show

An eye for an eye is no more proper agenda for the civilized society. As well as this, I do not believe in the 'curing' effect of the rehabilitation
philosophy; neither am I in for the philosophy of incapacitation that emphasizes on physical restraining of offenders against victimizing others or
isolating criminals from the rest of society. All these concepts tackle the outcomes of the offence as part of imprisonment, whereas the deterrence
paradigm tries to prevent them. Thus, every society and legal system should strategically emphasize on the causes of a crime rather than tackle with its
consequences (Chambliss & Seidman,

Utilitarian ( Evans, Kubasek, Audi)
Utilitarian is the school of thought based several theorist based on the end justify the means. Meaning the moral thought is not viewed based on
making the decision for outcomes. Utilitarian's base its ethics on measuring the greatest good of options and choices that create a net happiness for
society. Ethics was seen based on the history of choices ad rules established in a political or social arena that produced good or alleviated social pain.
Once such is example is our human thought of bribing. In most cases this would be viewed as unethical. But utilitarian's believe that if the bride would

He believe that the two could be addressed in the act utilitarian and the rule utilitarian. The act utilitarian believe that the ethics is based on adding up
the costs and the benefits of a choice that leads to the net happiness of large groups. On the other hand the Rule utilitarian's states that the rule or
decision of one should not change the outcomes of many due the general rule. The utilitarian resolve that ethics is the outcome of the act and not on
rather it is right or wrong. The school of thought is that every person matters and groups or decisions makers should make decision based on increasing
happiness; reducing unhappiness and not just on what is defined on what is individually ethically wrong. It should support the net benefit to the

Duty and Right (Audi)
The Duty and Right school of thought is discussed thru E. Audi in Determining Ethical Obligation. He concluded that people should act within in their

"Accountability is important in the military because soldiers are often times required to perform extremely challenging duties and services. Without
accountability, a soldier cannot be expected to meet these high demands and expectations". Being accountable means being in the right place at the

the right thing at the right time and all the time. One of the most important parts about being accountable is so that you do not miss any important...

you must be aware of your actions and always be vigilant and never to lose self accountability. Once you have gained self accountability, you can
then start to worry about other people if the task requires it. Accountability does not only happen on the week days but also during your personal
time because a lot of what you do or people see you do on your personal time can affect how people view and see you on work time. Also it can also
affect how you feel about yourself or how other people feel about you. The next topic i am going to cover is the importance of being accountable as a
Non–Commissioned Officer. This is really important because soldiers will always be coming to you for advice, guidance and almost everything
they can not do alone. NCO's are the backbone of the military, they relay information from the top of the channels all the way to the bottom. The
NCO mindset comes from a lot of honest hard work and working your way up from the bottom, which is why the NCO's should know most about
accountability, and also because they need to have accountability of not only themselves but that of others that are under them. If one domino falls
then most of the time they will all fall. so in other words if one person messes up then it could mess up everyone. In some missions this is very bad
because if you are in Afghanistan or Iraq then you need to have accountability so that everyone gets home safe and unharmed. The higher that you go in

Howard Becker– an American sociologist– a person who has shaped the labeling theory. In "Outsiders Studies in the Sociology of Deviance," by
Howard Becker (1963), he pointed out that "social groups create deviance by making the rules whose infraction constitutes deviance, and by applying
those rules to particular people and labelling them as outsiders." (Becker, 1963) In this sense, deviation is not the substance of the form of activity of a
person who makes, but that is the effect of others applying the rules of punishment for the "offender". Additionally, long–term labeling will become the
"lock" of individuals into misleading roles. That means the long–term outcome of the labeling process locks individuals into misleading roles and...

Social Reconstruction And Education : A Philosophy Focused...
Social Reconstruction & Education
Social reconstruction is a philosophy focused on achieving social change. As a practice, it strives to achieve social justice and equity by altering the
various social systems upon which society rests. It is based upon two major understandings; first, that society tends to develop systems that marginalize
and oppress others and thus need to change, and second, that achieving this change requires both creating a system that serves as a change agent and is
open to changing it's own purposes and structures as the social contexts in which it exists naturally evolve.
Since we live in a world of seemingly endless and diverse challenges, and since educational systems and schools are one of the primary means by
which we develop understanding and skills related to functioning in society, social reconstruction requires that social reform serve as the primary goal
of every student's education. As an educational philosophy, educational institutions at all levels are viewed as the main means by which students are
prepared to reconstruct the systems through which inequality and the oppression and marginalization of other people occur. Educational reconstruction
purposefully and explicitly requires that our schools function as change agents, empowering students to question the very systems in which they live
and work, and to create a society that is more equitable and just.

Utilitarian 's Vs. Deontologists
Utilitarian's vs Deontologists
On the topic of the conception of right action, deontologists and utilitarian's had opposing views on what makes an action just. I argue that Bentham's
view of determining right action, that an action is right if it has the tendency to maximize pleasure, is the optimal one because we are not able to
determine the motivations of others with absolute certainty.
Deontologists believed that good actions are bad without good will, and that motivation only mattered in determining a right action, not the outcome.
Oppositely, utilitarian's believed that only the outcome mattered in determining right action, not the motivations.
Immanuel Kant, a deontologist, determined good will as the concept of a will "good in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kant gives an example for why lying is not a right action. He states that there is a man who needs money even though he knows he will not be able
to pay it back, his maxim is "'I will borrow money and promise to pay it back, though I know that this will never be done'" (Kant 534). Kant
explains that this maxim would not work as a universal law because every banker would not believe someone who says they are going to pay
money back, therefore would never give out any loads. He goes on to explain how people should treat each other. He argues that it is not acceptable
to treat someone as "a merely as a means but "at the same time as an ends" (Kant 536). He says that to treat someone as a merely a means is to treat
them merely as a machine in ones plan and involving them without their ability to consent. He argued that people needed to be treated as an ends
meaning that people needed to be able to enter agreements of their own free will and without manipulation (Kant 537). Kant believed that treating
people merely as a means was without good will and therefore could never produce a right action.
On the other hand, Jeremy Bentham, a utilitarian, argued that the right action was the one that "tendency it has to augment the happiness of the

The Saints And Roughnecks Summary
Everyone has broken the norms of our society one time or another, or even committed a crime, like shoplifting or speeding. The Saints and
Roughnecks in the article written by William J. Chambliss should be considered deviant because they both commit similar acts. Deviance isn't just
committing a crime but it's a violation of norms. The saints are only viewed differently than the roughnecks because of the ascribed status they have.
Degradation ceremony defines how the roughnecks were labeled as deviant and performed in some type of public setting in which they were found
guilty and given the new identity of deviant. Deviancy, the norms set by society and the social conformity all revolve around the status's we ascribe to
those who break them.

cooperate for social benefits by sacrificing some individual freedom for state protection." Rousseau: "Oh no" Hobbes: "What you haven 't heard
of it?" Locke: "No, we know about it, you just get a little hostile when you drink." Hobbes: "Its not my fault that all the people who make up the
state are corrupt. But you could imagine living in a state of nature?" Locke: "In my opinion, if people were living in a society where there was no
government, society would be intolerable to live in. People could do whatever they wanted. Although there would be no government, this doesn't
mean the state would be free of morality." Hobbes: "I agree with what you on one thing and that is that people could do whatever they want.
However in this very hypothetical state, I think people would be living in constant fear." Locke: "I think this state is a reality. "It is often asked as a
a mighty objection, where are, or ever were, there any men in such a state of nature? To which it may suffice as an answer present, that since all

The Foundation Of Social Philosophy And The Philosophy Of...
III Social Philosophy literally means philosophy of society. Society means general society, the network of social relations, and not any particular
society because the philosophical view points towards universality. According to Daya Krishna, society "is the sort of reality," the truth of existence of
every being in relation with each other. Hence, the subject of social philosophy is the human society as a whole. As the relations that exist between the
objects of nature are different from social relations, social philosophy does not concern itself with nature and creatures other than man. Mere
coexistence, either among the people of one nation or among the nations themselves, is not enough for social relations. In the field of social relations,
social change and control cause integrative and disintegrative processes. Both similarity and dissimilarity are to be found in society, though the former
is more important. Unity in diversity... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So are all the social sciences. But it is concerned only with their more general aspects not with each one of them. The scope of social philosophy can
be understood by comprehending its main problem which is to discover the philosophical foundations of the society. Since the beginning of knowledge,
philosophers have been trying to study the philosophical foundations of various aspects of human society. They have discovered how far the society is
eternal and natural and how far it is changing and artificial. Whereas some thinkers believe that the individual is independent of society, others
emphasize the social nature of the individual. According to Aristotle, man is born social animal. On the other hand, Jean–Jacques Rousseau held that
man's social nature is the product of a social contract. Indian philosophers too have studied the social nature of man as natural. About the main problem
of social philosophy, John Stuart Mackenzie may be quoted

Social Contract
According to Hughes, major themes in common are examples of ideas in social philosophy include social contract theory, cultural criticism, and
individualism. Individualism often comes up in social philosophy, including questions regarding the separation, or lack thereof, of individual persons
from society and each other (Hughes, 2011).
Develop and Receive Legitimacy
Individuals in the state of nature came together and made agreements out of self–interest. It is these agreements that give legitimacy to government;

Structured Political Systems

"This American Life" was the story of The fractioned view Keith Aldrich's children had of him, and his daughter, Gillian's, attempt to reconcile an
entire image of her father. Aldrich's story was one of caution, of becoming too caught up in one's surroundings. In seeking to become a staple of a
piece of time and history, Aldrich disregarded his individuality in order to emulate those he admired. Aldrich life was a pattern of change
categorized by numerous marriages and the resulting children. He dawned new roles once he tired of his domestic life, until he decided to move
on to a new family, and the cycle started again. Gillian has categorized her father's life into time periods, periods in which he enacts a new persona
and dons a new family to complete the illusion. There were many moral issues raised in this podcast. Some were individually perceived morals
flaws, while others were more widely agreed upon to be negative. Some of his ethical issues that are more subjective were things like absentee
parenting, extramarital affairs, drugs, and alcohol use. However, his more egregious ethical issues were the physical and emotional abuse of his
children, particularly Josie, his assault on his son's girlfriend, and his malicious treatment of his wives in response to his own life failings. He
consistently rationalized his wrong doings and blamed those around him for his inability to be who he wanted. Overall, his life sounded like a case of

Individual Vs Utilitarianism
It is believed that the utilitarian concept does not allow for an individual to invoke what they feel is their "God–given" right because utilitarianism is
mainly concerned with achieving the greatest good for the majority of people with little concern about the "individual". Based on this theory, it would
be in the highest order to actually infringe on an individual's rights so as to benefit the greater population. This theory is rarely ever concerned with
justice, benevolence, egocentricity, or independence of a single person if the outcome does not benefit the greater amount of people
First let us further examine what is defined as utilitarianism. Utilitarianism states that ever act should comply with the "principle of utility." It points
out what we ought to do and what we shall do. It also, pushes for the most pleasure, with the least pain, for the majority of people involved. Why do
people make certain choices? Utilitarianism states that we are now slaves to pain and pleasure and knowing the balance between the two will assist in
knowing what choices others will make. While with a utilitarian mindset, making moral decisions based on God– given rights are no longer as
important as decisions based ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea of self–preservation, self–protection, self–acknowledgement, self–fulfillment, self–regard is pretty taboo if one is to be aligned with this line
of thinking. Dream fulfillment is not an ideology of this theory. There is no place for super–heroes or those who seek to do good for personal gain. The
individual always has to have others on his/her mind and consider how the outcome would affect the whole. They do good without justification and/or
qualification. Even if nothing is accomplished, happiness was achieved. As mentioned above, utilitarianism is done to solely reach the maximum goal.
It is not focused on justice–if oppressing the individual leads to a solution that benefits the most

Social Philosophy Of Immigration And Organized Crime
Various immigrants migrated to the United States. Many struggled to find jobs once in America. Why? Because whether they be Catholic or
immigrants they suffered racism from whites. As a result, they couldn't acquire any jobs to sustain their families. This led them to get involved in
illegal crimes (organized crime). Many of these immigrants has a social philosophy that contributed to the rise of organized crime. This paper will
analyze the social philosophy of immigrants and how it contributed to organized crime. As Lyman and Potter describe in the text, immigrants used
organized crime to attain wealth and stature in their new county (Lyman & Potter, 2014). Their business motto was to make large amount of money

Personal Statement : My Personal Philosophy Of Social Work
For a majority of my life, I wanted to be a pediatrician when I grew up. I had wanted to be a pediatrician due to my passion to work with children,
in addition to enhancing the lives of children. As I continued to grow up, I realized that science is not my strong suit and I would never survive
medical school. I do not recall how I learned about the profession of social work, but around the eighth grade I have known that social work was the
profession that I wanted to pursue. The idea of helping others is what initially struck me as compelling because I did not understand social work in
it's entirety, but I knew that I would relish a life of helping other individuals. As I began to mature, my desire to help others grew potent due to the
new experiences that occurred in my life. I began to work at Discount Drug Mart during my sophomore year of high school, which introduced me
to an abundance of diverse people. My store is located in inner Cleveland, in a neighborhood that is not the worst, but is certainly not the best.
Being a cashier, I quickly discovered that well over 75% of the customers had an Ohio Direction Food Card, while perhaps roughly 25% of
customers had a Women, Infants and Children Card. I realized that people of all races, cultures, and ages used both of these cards. I have worked at
Drug Mart for about two and a half years now, resulting in me being on a friendly basis with a majority of the customers. From the old men who tell
me about the time they served

Why Do Criminogenic Environments Cause Crime
As define in "Criminology," criminogenic environments are communities generally higher in neighborhoods with lower levels of social integration
(71). Structural factors that include: age, gender and race are mostly related in communities where socio economic and class status are affected by. Low
income neighborhoods contribute to individuals to be involve in crime. As described on our book scholars say that "kinds of places matter more than
kinds of people" (134). This view refers to that the people do not cause crime but rather the place where individuals reside is the one causing the crime.
The living situation in urban neighborhoods is a common association between teenagers and other adults to be exposed to crime. Some individuals who
are not criminals and that are connected to this environment may be equally exposed to criminal behavior. The result to this is that in many urban
areas, individuals are exposed to crime and criminal behavior in this communities. The result of Crimimogenic in urban neighborhoods is the result in
anomie were individuals loose their group ethical standard. The individual adapts to their socio economic environment and choose the life of crime.
Other view to criminogenic is the disorganization theory, "these problems involve structural conditions at the general level that generate deviance"
(137). There have been many studies in how an individual decided to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Philosophy Of Social Science Summary
The philosophy of social science is the branch of philosophy that involves examining concepts, the methods, and the logic of the social sciences (Fay,
2016, P.1). Gordon (1991, P.2), defined social science as using the scientific method to study human social behaviour. Therefore, this branch analyses
the cooperation of human beings with the aim of achieving objectives collectively rather than individually. Furthermore, the philosophers of social
science are concerned with the investigation of the social science practices and the nature of human beings.
The purpose of this paper is to critically review Martin Hollis's, The Philosophy of Social Science. The paper will analyse the author's objective
regarding the book, the approach taken by the author, the strength, and weaknesses of the book as well as what the readers might find useful from the
book.
The author sets out to define and examine the explanation and understanding of the major theme in the social world. The concept of understanding
centers on a proposition that the social world preferably ought to be understood from within rather than being explained from outside (Hollis, 2011,
p.16).
The concept of holism and individualism is also addressed as a minor theme. Holism implies that human beings are morally responsible for what they
do and the most valued forms of political organisation are determined socially and thus rest on illusion (Hollis, 2011, p.107). The concept of
individualism is defined from social

Harvard Case Study On Deviance
Deviance is not an event. It is a process that involves multiple levels of disapproval in the society, which has been proved to be biased against certain
groups of people. Deviance isn't just a matter of actions, but our identity. Everyone commits crime, but not all obtain the identity as deviant. The
process of acquiring that status involves exclusion of others, and the attribution of stigma, as illustrated in Goffman's study. Visible and perceivable
stigma leads to spoiled identity, where people acquire through interactions with others. We become deviant through membership in different groups as
they produce deviance by participating the 'rituals' of inclusion and exclusion. Its complexity continued to elude our attention, as we had constantly...

Harvard University has a great reputation for both their academic standings and student's morality. Their fear for the reputation generated their
ignorance and avoidance to these matters. Around that same year, two recent graduates pled guilty to stealing money from a Harvard–based cancer
charity; one prospective student's acceptance was rescinded because she killed her own mother. These events can all potentially damage the school's
great reputation, and they are reluctant to talk about these issues, as shown in the report. The social elites, those that have high academic success,
defined morality in their own terms, associated with students' academic standings, as Sinedu's application to a certain class was denied because she
wasn't good enough, which was a rejection she did not take well with; groups that are powerless received less help, attention from other social groups
and received less help. In this case, Sinedu's status as a foreign student or "third world" student, as used in this article, could attribute to her lack of

Relationship Between Sex And Power
Introduction
Michel Foucault was a French philosopher, historian, social theorist, philologist and literary critic whose work had a tremendous impact on several
disciplines. He was not a sociologist by training, but he worked diligently on sociological issues and otherwise had significant influence on the work
of other sociologists. One of his most famous works is the The History of Sexuality, in which he examines the emergence of "sexuality" as a discursive
object and separate sphere of life. According to Foucault, the idea that everyone has a sexuality is relatively a recent development in the West. In
Volume 1, Foucault discusses the relationship between sex and power in a historical context. He states that the ways in which humans think about
sexuality is primarily shaped by the "repressive hypothesis," which claims that Western society had suppressed sexuality from the 17th to the mid–20th
century, and this was due to the rise of capitalism and the bourgeois society. There are several key concepts in this book that will be discussed in this
paper include repressive hypothesis, sexuality, power, and discourse. This paper will seek to show the ways in which sexuality is a discursive object,
and how sexuality was linked to power throughout history.
Foucault describes the "repressive hypothesis" as one that supposes that any increase of energy on purely pleasurable activities, such as sex, has been
frowned upon since the rise of the bourgeoisie. Due to this, sex

Professionalism Is The Definite Aspect Of All Professions...
Introduction
Professionalism is the definite aspect of all professions because it connects with typical conducts, aims, or qualities that stand in lieu to any
profession. As we have discussed in class and as it has been written in the class manual, the ability for a worker to groom his or her personality in line
with the temerity to "exhibit a courteous, conscientious and generally businesslike manner in the workplace" is the attributes labeled as a professional.
In retrospect, we have set a standard in the course of learning in the classroom regarding the behavioral looks of a professional. Be that as it may, it is
paramount to discuss the characteristics and the behaviors of a professional, to intensify the Values and the influence they have on the professional
behavior of a disability Support Worker, and also to discuss current personal traits andvalue system as they relate to this profession. I will also identify
any changes I anticipate happening in my value system as I gain more experience in this professional role.
It is unusual and abnormal to make a ferocious altercation concerning the Disability Support Service Profession and it is certainly an auspicious
proclamation to elude some lasting remarks about the characteristics and the behaviors of a professional. One of the essential aspects of a worker 's
characteristics in the field of DSS is his or her circle of ability to be committed to the Organization or employer, to the services the Organization

Social Work Philosophy
Social Work's core philosophy and values are centered around social justice and social well–being. Oppression, injustice, discrimination, and violence
are antithetical to the social work profession. Social Work believes in strength–based approaches and the person–in–environment perspective to cater
the needs and welfare of individuals, families, groups, communities, and society at large. Generally, the target populations forsocial work are
vulnerable, marginalized, and oppressed people; however, social workers provide services to people with a wide range of problems, such as poverty,
addiction, mental illness, etc. to empower them to meet their own needs. Historically, the social work profession started its operation by providing

Several decades after the Civil Right Acts of 1964 were passed, we still hear the slogans of "Black lives matter" and "All lives matter." According
to the NASW Code of Ethics (1996), social workers should be "sensitive to cultural and ethnic diversity and strive to end discrimination, oppression,
poverty, and other forms of social injustice" (p. 3). Social workers and the profession as a whole should address problems related to minority groups to
make our society equitable, just, and responsive to social justice. As a measure of this ethical standard, the content of the major journal of NASW
(National Association of Social Work), Social Work, should reflect studies conducted by researchers on minority groups and their problems, which this
study intends to analyze. Additionally, Council on Social Work Education has required social work schools to maintain cultural diversity in students'
enrollment, hiring of faculty, and the development of curricula (Trolander, 1997), but how well this diversity is reflected in research studies is a
matter of exploration, which this study has tried to address by doing the content analysis of the most prestigious social work journal, Social

Why Cheating Harms Society

  • 1. The Importance Of Prosocial Behavior Humans are inherently social being meaning they naturally tend to live in groups and that can consist of both kin and nonkin. While humans do form communities there are conflicts that have and will continue to occur because humans possess and exhibit traits both for and against prosocial behavior. These antisocial traits continue to thrive in humans because it is working in conjunction with other traits that are desired in humans or the trait themselves yields unexpected, but welcome behavior. Morality, human's conscience that dictates right from wrong, balances these traits and encourages this prosocial behavior, by enabling important inclinations such as cooperation and altruism that improve human interactions. Generally speaking, actions that benefit the community will in turn benefit the survival of that individual in the social environments constructed by humans. While there are methods to both suppress unwanted tendencies and encourage wanted tendencies, Boehm focuses a significant amount on these suppression techniques. The suppression of such "bad" behavior allows coherency in the group. This will cover a few key mechanisms of this suppression including the guidelines created by societies, the regulation of them to uphold such ideals and some of the genetic forces that drive evolution. An important way to maintain a functioning society is to suppress the individuals who are unable to abide by the social norm and therefore threaten to disrupt the balance and order of ... • 2. The Pros And Cons Of Utilitarianism Many societies seem to be teetering in prosperity, which causes anxiety about future for many individuals. Some call for a society to run on the principle of utility, others call for individual freedom to be the prime drive to a society, while others call for the collective participation of all the members of a society to promote its just existence. A good, functional society must do more than the ideas promoted byutilitarianism and liberalism, it must cultivate good citizens through the process of involvement in the community and debate on moral issues. The two ideas which fall short in their ability to form a just society are utilitarianism and freedom–based theories. In utilitarianism, the main goal is the maximization of happiness for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning of America, close communities were founded in which everyone either could or had to participate. Present America holds many individuals which, by one way or another, have passed the civic duties of a citizen and involvement in the politics of their society on to the governing body over them. The American dream includes a personal collection of material goods and comforts instead of good citizen characteristics. Social media involves little deep conversations and is instead comprised of superficial, quick communications. With bonds no longer being available in a public way, the pursuit of personal success and the pursuit of fulfillment of feeling only allow for private connections at most. Bellah warns, "the culture of separation, if it ever became completely dominant, would collapse of its own incoherence" (281). Bellah encourages religion as a source of connection in a community where individuals are encouraged to give back to their communities instead of focusing on themselves. What Bellah describes that truly destroys a society is not wars, it is inactivity: "we have put our own good, as individuals, as groups, as a nation, ahead of the common good" (285). A test is put on society observing the way in which they handle wealth and poverty – extremes which cannot exist in a just society. Giving up our individualism does not mean our ... • 3. Conscience In I Hunt Killers, By Barry Lyga One or more traumatic events can weaken one's conscience. Conscience is a feeling or voice in one's mind that acts as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of one's actions. Having a conscience allows you to be able to bring yourself back to reality, to face the truth and take responsibility over your actions. Traumatic experiences can weaken your conscience so it will no longer be able to keep you in reality. Serial killers, or the criminally insane lack conscience and that's why they are able to harm one or a bunch of people, without realizing how it affects others. I am interested in the minds of serial killers who are cold hearted and have no remorse for what they have done. I believe that there is specific reason deep down hidden behind their heartless persona that has caused them to act a violent way. I take interest in the minds of the criminally insane because they tend to lose the ability to function mentally due to a traumatic experience or experiences.... • 4. Natural Law Theory Vs Utilitarianism In this paper, I will argue that a combination of Natural Law Theory and Utilitarianism best captures what should be required in terms of respecting natural rights. One of the benefits of Utilitarianism is that it looks at what we ought to do, not must do, while keeping in mind the consequences of our actions. On the negative side, all consequences, short term and long term, must be considered, often making it very difficult to make the ultimately correct decision, since seeing the future is not a human attribute. Who is to determine what is best? The easy answer is the majority, but this could result in the tyranny of the majority. One of Natural Law Theory's benefits is that it uses reason to determine social and personal human nature to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since Utilitarianism is mainly about what ought to be done, when what ought to be done is decided by the majority, and goes against what the minority believes to be right, the tyranny of the majority is pushed onto the minority. As an example, prior to the 1980's it was common to smoke in public, at work, and in restaurants. American society's norms changed, and smoking was no longer approved of by the majority. The result was that millions of smokers, unable or unwilling to quit, were forced to give up their freedom of smoking. While argument that smoking is unhealthy is valid, smoking was acceptable for over 200 years in America. This also happened with alcohol, with the 18th Amendment banning it in 1920, and Marijuana being outlawed in 1937. While on the surface the argument that Natural Rights Theory could lead to anarchy sounds plausible, and Bentham and Burke may have had cause to state so, eventually the turmoil that may at first seem to be anarchy, eventually does settle down as social contracts are developed, and governments created. The American Revolution may have seemed like anarchy at the time, but it did develop into a constitutional republic that is now 240 years old. While France also went through some anarchical times in the 1790's, and did revert to a monarchy for a time, France is still around ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cider House Rules Essay The 1999 film, "Cider House Rules" is a touching story of morality, issues of life/death, and the violence and suppression to which women are concerned with, but the law unjustly dictates. The title of the film, after digesting the movie, suggests rules are hard to dictate for a home, when someone has never lived in it. Philosophical ethics is the attempt to offer a rational response to the question of how humans should best live. Aristotle regarded ethics and politics as two related but separate fields of study, since ethics examines the good of the individual, while politics examines the good of the city–state (https:/ /en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristotelian_ethics). This movie touches on the different scenarios of lives that make everyone such individuals, sharing a glimpse of the massive decisions the individuals must make in their life and how people are impacted on society as a whole. Larch's words are so relevant to Homer Wells life, the parallels of their positions in society, he has seen many children exist unwanted, which could have been remedied by their mother's having abortions. Buster, an orphan, is a prime example of a child who, had he been given the option, would probably have chose to never exist– to have been aborted. This became apparent a few times throughout the movie, initially when he is asked "why he would want to meet his parents", and he replied "maybe to tell them I can cook a little, or that I can drive, or maybe to kill them." Again, when he almost drives off the road while listening to Homer's opinion about how "life is a gift," his poor driving indicated that it was a gift that was unwanted in his eyes and that his home is a literal place where unwanted children exist, the byproduct of women who did not have ... I have made many moral decisions in my lifetime. Some of them are no–brainers, others take some careful deliberation. One of the moral decisions that I still think about to this day, is when I cheated in a relationship. An Absolutist would say that cheating is wrong, not matter what the circumstance. A relativist would think it is wrong only, if the cheater thought it was wrong.. The Use Of Spyware Into The Diabetes Foundation Website In this case Jake Markos is the moral agent and is contemplating on whether or not he should embed spyware into the Diabetes Foundation website that allows his company, ALAC marketing, to collet email addresses and use them to market a product. Other moral agents presented in this case are Nathan Brook, Jake's boss, Maia Herrick, Nathan's assistant manager, and ALAC Marketing. In this case, ALAC is the least importantmoral agent because it possess vicarious moral sensitivity and responsiveness thus, if we examine the sensitivity and responsiveness of its individual employees we would understand ALAC's position regarding Jake's dilemma. This is also, in part, due to the fact that corporations employ highly organized holistic decision–making and although corporations are morally accountable it does not mean that individuals who are employed by the corporation are not also morally accountable. The first question presented in the case is whether or not Jake should embed the spyware. If Jake decides to embed the spyware then he will be deceiving the Diabetes Foundation by making them believe that the survey does exactly what they want, when really it does more. My personal philosophy of helping is that if individuals and groups in society are provided with the equal opportunities then everyone can become a productive member of society. If the necessary resources are provided to oppressed groups in society, then the result will be that individuals in those groups will work hard to become an effective citizen of society. • 10. Personal Philosophy Of School Social Work I am interested in school social work. My biggest goal is to work and help neglected children. When volunteering at Bessemer Elementary I got to see a school social worker in action. Making sure the children weren't being abused, making sure that a child had the necessary needs to grow, and be successful in, and outside of school. This field has always interesting to me because when I was younger I had a family social worker. She came to visit my brothers and I after my father passed when it became hard for my mother to take care of all five of us. Every time she came she had a big smile on her face, and she gave my mother hope that everything would be okay; which is what I want to help someone else with. • 11. The Philosophy Of Social Science Hollis expresses his intention to explore the philosophy of social science of which he categorises into four modes. He attempted to seek for the acceptable compromises between all and each mode to define a better way of understanding the social world. Hollis clearly states that the key task of this book is to reflect on the underlying philosophy of social science through the critical examination of the theory and methodology in each approach. Some of the key questions are; whether the study of social science can use the same method as in natural science, does structure determine an action or does action determines structure in the process of social changes, and is there such a thing as the universal strategy to help social scientists in understanding the way of the world. The main theme focuses on Explanation and Understanding with the minor theme of Holism and Individualism. The book initially gives the impression that each social study approach has its strength and weakness that the combination of approaches would be beneficial and worth pursuing. Hollis starts off with the introduction of Structure and Action. The comparative framework is set out by the two social scientists who employ two different principles; Karl Marx and John Stuart Mills. Determinism is then introduced to further illuminate the difference between these two theories. Hollis also provides readers with the fundamental feature of Explanation and Understanding. • 12. Difference Between Stockholder And Stakeholders Chapter 11 1.What is the difference between stockholder and stakeholders to a company A company's stakeholders are individuals or groups with an interest, claim, or stake in the company, in what it does, and in how well it performs. They include stockholders, creditors, employee customers, the communities in which the company does business, and the general public. A company's stockholders are usually put in a different class from other stakeholder groups, and for good reason. Stockholders are legal owners and the providers of risk capital, a major source of the capital resources that allow a company to operate its business. The capital that stockholders provide to a company is seen as risk capital because there is no guarantee that stockholders will ever recoup their investment and/or earn a decent return. 2.How ethics in any business responds to stakeholders concerns The ethical issues that strategic managers confront cover many topics, but most are due to a potential conflict between the goals of the enterprise, or the goals of individual managers, and the fundamental rights of important stakeholders, including stockholders, customers, employees, suppliers, competitors, communities, and the general public. Stakeholders have basic rights that should be respected, and it is unethical to violate those rights. • 14. Punishment Philosophy: Social Control Functions Mini Paper 1 Leon Nelson Liberty University Punishment Philosophy Punishments vastly vary in terms of their underlying philosophies and forms. Fundamental punishment philosophies involve deterrence, retribution, rehabilitation, restoration, and incapacitation. In terms of form, punishments come as either formal or informal depending on the legitimate authority held by the sanctioning body. While the nature ofpunishment intends to execute various social–control functions, the principles of incapacitation, retribution, rehabilitation, deterrence, and restoration seem relevant. At that, each philosophy intends to prevent the occurrence of criminal offenses. Deterrence assumes persuading people against committing crimes and violating laws. This way, deterrence shapes public awareness about what is wrong and unlawful. Rather than actual punishment, the deterrence philosophy warns and alerts people from the consequences of violating the law. Obviously, imposing warnings seems more effective than taking formal legal actions. This means that deterrence releases the society from possible offenders, and therefore omits punishment at all. Ethics was seen based on the history of choices ad rules established in a political or social arena that produced good or alleviated social pain. Once such is example is our human thought of bribing. The basis of morality is the quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct. Therefore, morality cannot demand that one make decisions that he/she truly does not choose. First off by definition "Accountability is important in the military because soldiers are often times required to perform extremely challenging duties and services. Without accountability, a soldier cannot be expected to meet these high demands and expectations". Being accountable means being in the right place at the right time, being in the proper duty uniform, being dependable and always arriving to work on time, appointments on time and most importantly doing the right thing at the right time and all the time. Also it can also affect how you feel about yourself or how other people feel about you. The next topic i am going to cover is the importance of being accountable as a Non–Commissioned Officer. This is really important because soldiers will always be coming to you for advice, guidance and almost everything they can not do alone. NCO's are the backbone of the military, they relay information from the top of the channels all the way to the bottom. The NCO mindset comes from a lot of honest hard work and working your way up from the bottom, which is why the NCO's should know most about accountability, and also because they need to have accountability of not only themselves but that of others that are under them. If one domino falls then most of the time they will all fall. so in other words if one person messes up then it could mess up everyone. In some missions this is very bad because if you are in Afghanistan or Iraq then you need to have accountability so that everyone gets home safe and unharmed. In "Outsiders Studies in the Sociology of Deviance," by Howard Becker (1963), he pointed out that "social groups create deviance by making the rules whose infraction constitutes deviance, and by applying those rules to particular people and labelling them as outsiders." (Becker, 1963) In this sense, deviation is not the substance of the form of activity of a person who makes, but that is the effect of others applying the rules of punishment for the "offender". Additionally, long–term labeling will become the "lock" of individuals into misleading roles. That means the long–term outcome of the labeling process locks individuals into misleading roles and... • 20. Social Reconstruction And Education : A Philosophy Focused... Social Reconstruction & Education Social reconstruction is a philosophy focused on achieving social change. As a practice, it strives to achieve social justice and equity by altering the various social systems upon which society rests. It is based upon two major understandings; first, that society tends to develop systems that marginalize and oppress others and thus need to change, and second, that achieving this change requires both creating a system that serves as a change agent and is open to changing it's own purposes and structures as the social contexts in which it exists naturally evolve. Since we live in a world of seemingly endless and diverse challenges, and since educational systems and schools are one of the primary means by which we develop understanding and skills related to functioning in society, social reconstruction requires that social reform serve as the primary goal of every student's education. As an educational philosophy, educational institutions at all levels are viewed as the main means by which students are prepared to reconstruct the systems through which inequality and the oppression and marginalization of other people occur. Educational reconstruction purposefully and explicitly requires that our schools function as change agents, empowering students to question the very systems in which they live and work, and to create a society that is more equitable and just. I argue that Bentham's view of determining right action, that an action is right if it has the tendency to maximize pleasure, is the optimal one because we are not able to determine the motivations of others with absolute certainty. Deontologists believed that good actions are bad without good will, and that motivation only mattered in determining a right action, not the outcome. Oppositely, utilitarian's believed that only the outcome mattered in determining right action, not the motivations. He states that there is a man who needs money even though he knows he will not be able to pay it back, his maxim is "'I will borrow money and promise to pay it back, though I know that this will never be done'" (Kant 534). Kant explains that this maxim would not work as a universal law because every banker would not believe someone who says they are going to pay money back, therefore would never give out any loads. He goes on to explain how people should treat each other. He argues that it is not acceptable to treat someone as "a merely as a means but "at the same time as an ends" (Kant 536). He says that to treat someone as a merely a means is to treat them merely as a machine in ones plan and involving them without their ability to consent. He argued that people needed to be treated as an ends meaning that people needed to be able to enter agreements of their own free will and without manipulation (Kant 537). Kant believed that treating people merely as a means was without good will and therefore could never produce a right action. On the other hand, Jeremy Bentham, a utilitarian, argued that the right action was the one that "tendency it has to augment the happiness of the community is greater than any it has to diminish it" (Bentham 481). Society means general society, the network of social relations, and not any particular society because the philosophical view points towards universality. According to Daya Krishna, society "is the sort of reality," the truth of existence of every being in relation with each other. Hence, the subject of social philosophy is the human society as a whole. As the relations that exist between the objects of nature are different from social relations, social philosophy does not concern itself with nature and creatures other than man. Mere coexistence, either among the people of one nation or among the nations themselves, is not enough for social relations. Individual Vs Utilitarianism It is believed that the utilitarian concept does not allow for an individual to invoke what they feel is their "God–given" right because utilitarianism is mainly concerned with achieving the greatest good for the majority of people with little concern about the "individual". Based on this theory, it would be in the highest order to actually infringe on an individual's rights so as to benefit the greater population. This theory is rarely ever concerned with justice, benevolence, egocentricity, or independence of a single person if the outcome does not benefit the greater amount of people First let us further examine what is defined as utilitarianism. Utilitarianism states that ever act should comply with the "principle of utility." It points out what we ought to do and what we shall do. It also, pushes for the most pleasure, with the least pain, for the majority of people involved. Why do people make certain choices? The Philosophy Of Social Science Summary The philosophy of social science is the branch of philosophy that involves examining concepts, the methods, and the logic of the social sciences (Fay, 2016, P.1). Gordon (1991, P.2), defined social science as using the scientific method to study human social behaviour. Therefore, this branch analyses the cooperation of human beings with the aim of achieving objectives collectively rather than individually. Furthermore, the philosophers of social science are concerned with the investigation of the social science practices and the nature of human beings. The purpose of this paper is to critically review Martin Hollis's, The Philosophy of Social Science. The paper will analyse the author's objective regarding the book, the approach taken by the author, the strength, and weaknesses of the book as well as what the readers might find useful from the book. The author sets out to define and examine the explanation and understanding of the major theme in the social world. The concept of understanding centers on a proposition that the social world preferably ought to be understood from within rather than being explained from outside (Hollis, 2011, p.16). The concept of holism and individualism is also addressed as a minor theme. Holism implies that human beings are morally responsible for what they do and the most valued forms of political organisation are determined socially and thus rest on illusion (Hollis, 2011, p.107). The process of acquiring that status involves exclusion of others, and the attribution of stigma, as illustrated in Goffman's study. Relationship Between Sex And Power Introduction Michel Foucault was a French philosopher, historian, social theorist, philologist and literary critic whose work had a tremendous impact on several disciplines. He was not a sociologist by training, but he worked diligently on sociological issues and otherwise had significant influence on the work of other sociologists. One of his most famous works is the The History of Sexuality, in which he examines the emergence of "sexuality" as a discursive object and separate sphere of life. According to Foucault, the idea that everyone has a sexuality is relatively a recent development in the West. In Volume 1, Foucault discusses the relationship between sex and power in a historical context. He states that the ways in which humans think about sexuality is primarily shaped by the "repressive hypothesis," which claims that Western society had suppressed sexuality from the 17th to the mid–20th century, and this was due to the rise of capitalism and the bourgeois society. There are several key concepts in this book that will be discussed in this paper include repressive hypothesis, sexuality, power, and discourse.
