Racial Tension Among The Black And White Societies
Recently in class we observed the controversial film A Raisin in the Sun which initially was a play
written by Lorraine Hansberry in the late 1950s. Lorraine was the youngest of her siblings and grew
up in rural Chicago back during the era of segregation. It was evident that her hard trials growing up
directly correlated with this film as the setting of the plot occurred in her hometown, Chicago, right
before the Civil Rights Movement began. This explicit film vividly conveyed many important issues
that were ongoing in American history which saw the nation go from economic prosperity to racial
tension and turmoil briefly after World War II. Through Hansberry's production of this play the
viewer is given an honest depiction of the black family and contrary to popular belief, the black
community of that time was not comedic or flattering which we sometimes see in today's society. A
Raisin in the Sun successfully specifies the racial tension amongst the black and white societies and
strongly illustrates the difficulty in which the main characters had in trying to respond to racial
oppression situations throughout the film. The Younger family which Hansberry focuses on is a
black family struggling with poverty, yet dreaming of possessing a lifestyle far more promising.
This covers two of the main themes of the film which I believe are the concepts of dreams and
money. Walter Younger, who is Lena's only son serves both as an antagonist and protagonist in the
film due to his

Racial Tension In America Essay
The Internet, social media, and the emergence of terrorist groups in America; what do these three
have in common? The mere fact that they are some America's daily trends of the modern era. Being
a child of the millennial age, I strongly feel as if no one has experienced racial tension in America as
much as my fellow millennials and I. We see it in news headlines all over, the Internet, and hear
about it during our daily commutes. All asking one question; what's your opinion on this racial
inequality? Since we are the land of the free, the opinion of the public is highly valued, as well as
diverse. Recently, the diversity has become more than just the simple opinions of the people; it's
become the issue of racial tension. A tension so deep that it has accounted for many physical
altercations, uproars, and unfortunate deaths within the country. How do you put into this
detrimental norm of society you ask? Here's what I think.
For starters, I highly do not believe that placing the blame on a certain race, which has been subtly
going on within the American public, is the effective way to go. The most effective way to handle
the situation, in my sincere opinion, is to take a look at the history of America's diverse cultures,
instead of re–creating the mistakes made by our predecessors. The segregation era of the 1950s, the
mistreatment of the Native ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There will always be a new and effective way to solving the racial divisions caused by the issue.
Importantly, these new and effective ways will only emerge if the America public is ready to discuss
and share their input on fixing the problem, rather than exploiting there opinions that increase the
problem. With all suggestions considered the following remains true; a general consensus, a national
discussion, or a national evaluation is in much need. We can't move forward if no one is willing to
take a step in the right direction for a nationwide

Migration And Racial Tension Of Australia
Migration and racial tension
I believe that the two topics that I have chosen relate to each other in many ways. The racial tension
came from the migrating races to Australia, and the issues that the Australians of the time had with
the "new people". The migration occurred because there was a growing business in a new country,
there were more opportunities for trade and everyone wanted to try their luck on the gold fields. I
found the migrating story's from the Chinese to be more of an interesting theme. This is the same
with the racial tension, the mass groups of Chinese were the main targets with the racism.
Most migrants that came to Australia to grab a share of the gold rush, left behind family and home.
In traditional Chinese culture this was particularly difficult for them to come from a parent's heavy
focused family system, to an alien country to live.
The Chinese people that came to Australia were typically men brining there family over with them
to work for an income that would be big enough to support them. The wife however was left at
home to forfill the role of looking after her in–laws in this time. The family would have to work for
them aswell, and send a percentage of there profit over.
As the population of chinses immergents started to climb, they were starting to become apart of
population statistics. If you were Chinese by birth and you were outside NSW, the governments of
the other states took advantage of you and made you pay a special reentry

Racial Tensions In The United States
Racial tensions in the United States have been an ongoing event since around slavery and Jim Crow
Laws. Americans have focused all of their attention on how police officers treat black Americans.
The Criminal Justice System states, "Black Americans are more likely to have their cars searched."
People moving around in a vehicle can indicate efforts to retrieve or conceal a weapon, hide drugs,
liquor, or stolen property. If the officer suspects anything suspicious, then they have a right to search
your vehicle. This gives people the idea that officers are racist and treat white Americans with more
respect. Logically, I believe that if a person driving a car isn't handling things appropriately, then
they will be pulled over and questioned

Racial Tension and The Declaration of Independence
"The past is never dead. It's not even past." Requiem of a Nun by William Faulkner. In a speech
given by commander–in–chief, president Barack Obama he uses this quote as an example to
describe the racial situation that plagues contemporary America. Over two hundred years ago a
document was signed promising no guaranteeing that every man was entitled to life, liberty and the
pursuit of happiness. This document found that it was self evident, that all men were created equal
and that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights (life, liberty and the
pursuit of happiness). When it was written the Declaration of Independence guaranteed every man
he shall not be denied certain unalienable rights by the government and if his ... Show more content

The black people who have had a horrific experience ever since they were captured and brought to
this country. Plagued with memories of embarrassment and the injustice of slavery, Jim Crow laws,
one–drop doctrines, inflicted upon them by depraved white men and women who thought nothing
more of them than animal that could be exploited and to add insult to injury now that African
Americans have come to a point where they are finally getting a milliliter of respect they are told by
their Caucasian counter parts to just get over it (slavery, Jim Crow, and the countless other injustices
and embarrassments we have had to suffer). This has led to some African Americans developing a
"the white man is keeping me down" mentality that is not only detrimental to himself but also the
African–American and American community. In many cases this mentality has been justified by the
institution of doctrines such as the one– drop doctrine or one drop rule stating that a person could
have between one–eighth and one–quarter African blood and be considered legally white entitling
said person to all the right of an American citizen. Although justified to a certain degree this
mentality is counterproductive to the abolishment of bigotry and the beginning of social, cultural
and racial understanding amongst all Americans whether they are black, white, brown, red, yellow,
green or purple. Laws have been instituted to

history there has been much social division due to racial tension. Because black people were mainly
the victims in early history, many of their thoughts are influenced by their past. This reality can be
hard to erase from the minds of those who experienced such injustice. In the story 'A Worn Path',

Values Education's Reactio Paper
"Our attitudes control our lives. Attitudes are a secret power working twenty–four hours a day, for
good or for bad. It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great
force." –Tom Blandi
Values can either be transmitted or acquired. It is anything that we put importance on. It comprises
all the behaviors, attitudes and cultures one is into. Sometimes, we are confused if values are how
we deal with people but realistically speaking, it is how we deal with our environment– how we
view things in or with its realize how important we are as a rational being. Human as rational

This is sometimes the irony that we assume that we really participate in some work or activities
even if we are not. Just because we are busy doing something. We cannot work on two mental
activities at the same time that's why we perform less involvement in the task assigned. But, we
should always remember that life is not a contest to see who can drop into the grave the fastest.
Guard your mental and physical health by slowing down to a reasonable pace. Concentrate on the
task at hand, and do it well before moving on. More isn't always better. Life failures caused by our
mishandling of the situation may lead to stress, conflict, frustration, and at the end, we need to cope
with it. Experiencing depression is like coming to a dead end. Life holds no meaning anymore. The
once all–time high self–esteem now dangerously touches the zero level. Even a rosy retirement life
suddenly becomes a death march. We, persons, with ability to feel must be very serious and
sensitive about this because in our day to day scenario, we must learn to handle thing right. Stress is
a part of life. Regardless of all the media hype, we need stress in our life! It may be surprising.
Without stress, life would be dull and unexciting. Stress adds flavor and, challenge, and opportunity
to life. We need a degree of stress to operate, to meet a challenge r goal, to laugh, to love, and to

Racial Inequalities and Tension Essay
After centuries of fighting, protesting, and labor, the fight for equality seemed to reach a conclusion.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 brought an end to segregation and promoted full equal opportunities
for not only African Americans but other ethnicities as well. America elected Barack Obama as its
president, allowed certain months to represent cultural awareness, and immigration numbers
augmented. However, regardless of the fact that the country becomes increasingly diverse by the day
and heavy, racial social boundaries no longer exist, racism, prejudice, and stereotypes still exist.
"The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color–line" (McQuade 391) says it the

Losing to the white man became routine, primarily because African Americans seemingly
relinquished the struggle. Simple things such as small acts of racism affect them whereas their
ancestors faced deeper issues. The message that Cosby wanted the most emphasis on revolves
around the idea that blacks should worry more about judging themselves instead of worry about the
whites judging them on the content on their character. However, that doesn't seem like an attainable
possibility. Obviously, the majority of racism in today's society fell into extinction, but not all.
People are still failing to accept equality for a variety of reasons. As Cosby said, history plays an
important role but then again it's even natural for people to associate themselves by commonalities
in physical appearances. Frankly, removing something natural and instilled either cannot be done or
it takes a great amount of time. Therefore, the inequality exists in today's society. Early Sunday, Jake
England, 19, and Alvin Watts, 32, found themselves in handcuffs after a series of tips led
investigators to England's burned pickup truck, said to be the vehicle used in several reported crime
scenes that day. Following reports, police found five African–Americans shot, with 3 dead and 2
wounded. Both suspects received charges of three counts of murder and

Racial Tension And Police Brutality
Racial tension and police brutality are the most controversial topics in the United States today. As a
society, we never really know what to do with racism. The increase tensions between the African
American community and Caucasian community has been at an ultimate high recently. The
contemporary events in places such as Missouri, Florida, Chicago, etc. have highlighted the
seriousness of these issues.
In Ferguson, Missouri, 18–year–old African American male Michael Brown was shot and killed by
police officer Darren Wilson. The incident involving Brown created a critical environment in
Ferguson and became a dangerous and controversial time in America. The events following the
initial incident impacted Missouri significantly. Following this incident, a ripple effect of police
brutality incidents took place. The question "Is the law is really doing their job and protecting us?"
Was created.
The issue of police brutality is a significant issue within America today. I strongly think that this
issue is an important issue because as civilians, individuals should feel protected by their law system
and officers. But also, police officers should not be anxious to arrest individuals and/or patrol
communities because of tensions created within the community. Specifically, since Michael Brown's
death police officers become apprehensive to do their job because of the split between civilians and
the police force during this time. One incident that created fear, anxiousness, and anger

Racial Tension In To Kill A Mockingbird
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee portrays conflict and racial tension in the south in a small
community known as Maycomb. The town is examined by viewing each individual's morals and
ethics that either creates drama in the town or counts as an ethically correct lesson towards the
people. This is evident within the two children known as Scout and Jem., where their character
develops and changes drastically throughout the story due to crucial and vital lessons that not only
mature them but open them up to new perspectives, maturity and show them how courage can take
many forms. The first segment of the TKAM revolves around Boo radley, a mysterious figure that
the children portray as the monster of Maycomb, though they have not seen him, they ... Show more

As many would say that Atticus is courageous by striving to do the right thing, others like Jem and
Scout, during the first segment of the book, would see their father as an uncourageous and inactive
hero. As children, their view is varied and restricted due to the fact that Scout and Jem criticise
Atticus' ability to play sports. They constantly complain about his ability to football and his
lawyering skills. They do not appreciate the courage and risk he is taking by defending an African–
American and doing the right thing. Perhaps in a child's perspective, courage is seen when he shoots
the dog with a rifle. However, as they later on see that courage can take many forms like Ms.
Dubose's morphine addiction and how Atticus takes the leap of faith by choosing to do the right
thing and protect Tom Robinson. This resonates with Jem because he sees his father's Lawyering
abilities and how he is using the for the good of Maycomb. One can tell that Jem has a lot of hope in
him and as if Atticus might actually win the case. However, as realistic and compelling as the
evidence might seem, Jem is unaware of the racist adult society of maycomb. Nevertheless, by using
his father's morals and the evidence he was shown in the court. Jem finally comes to a realization
that pure racism is affecting the views and minds of not only the Jury but the entire town of

The Racial Tension in the NFL
Author Peter S. Morris once said, "If baseball is America's favorite pastime, then football must be its
passion" (Morris, 2004). Throughout the years, the sport of football has risen through the ranks to
become the spectator sport in North America. Football has been interwoven into the "American
psyche" and culture. Millions of dedicated and loyal fans keenly await the chance to pack out
stadiums at the beginning of each National Football League (NFL) season. They stare into the
dazzling field lights, clothe themselves in paraphernalia, and wildly cheer on the players of their
chosen team. Football has become a part of the American life. The NFL embodies the "fun" in
American society. It is seventeen weeks filled with excitement, high spirits, and a competitive
atmosphere. A piece of American society that isn't so jubilant has been making serious headlines as
of lately. These series of incidents have been a Public Relations nightmare for the beloved league.
The use of racial slurs both on the field and off the field by NFL players is an issue that, until
recently, was not openly discussed in the sport. The number of "incidents" has gradually increased
throughout the years. As a solution to this growing problem, NFL committees have recently decided
to impose a 15 yard penalty on any and all players that use the racial slur "Nigga(er)" while playing
the game. The racial tension in the NFL, the pros of the new penalty, and the cons of the new
penalty are certainly worth

Racial Tension In The United States
Racial tension in the United States reached a new high in the second half of the twentieth century.
Black Power movements arose as blacks realized that negotiations and peace talks for integration
could only take them so far in the fight against racism. Particularly, lacks found inspiration in
Africa, which motivated them to act more aggressively against racist thinking (Marable 105).
Furthermore, the Vietnam War added to the loss of rationale as many Americans deemed the war
unnecessary. This affected the black community in that despite the official end of segregation in the
armed forces, blacks were widely unrepresented in the higher ranks (97). The country reflected the
violence abroad due to all of the unrest, but the hostility of blacks ... Show more content on

She notes that the Guidelines exist as a "starting point" and an "initial benchmark" rather than a
definitive source for handing punishments (Kimbrough 108). This is a remarkable assertion because
it undermines the power of the Anti–Drug Abuse Act and affirms that the discrepancy between the
sentences for crack and cocaine offenders are indeed unreasonable. Justice Ginsburg acknowledges
this specifically by revealing that the Sentencing Commission itself found the disparity set by the
1986 Act "greater than necessary" (110). This case is a victory for Kimbrough as the Court
overturned the appeal and allowed him to carry on with the sentence the district court first
presented. Moreover, a bigger victory against the War on Drugs is seen by the Court's decision as
there is now greater federal recognition for the severity of drug laws. Nevertheless, the implications
of this case still has grave realities for the people who are most

We cannot quite comprehend the situation. Racism is birthed out of fear of the other. The
authors/directors convey that blacks fear whites because they want to stay alive and keep their
families. They are afraid of their houses being burnt down (Mississippi Burning), getting hung (To
Kill A Mocking Bird), and being acused of crimes that were not committed (The Help). There is a
powerful scene in Mississippi Burning when a black man is questioned by an FBI agent about the
murder of some young boys committed by the Ku Klux Klan. Fear is shown through his body
language as he does not make direct eye contact and appears to sound quite nervous. In the dialogue
he repeats 'please sir i have nothing to say.' This captures that he is afraid of speaking against the
white men incase his house is burnt and his children witness his murder. Within the texts, the white
man fears the black because he is scared of losing control and superiority. They justify they are right
by saying the blacks have diseases and are a sub specie. In The Help Miss Hilly truly buys into the
lie. 'Its plain dangerous they carry different diseases, i'll do whatever it takes to protect our children.'
Similarly in Mississippi Burning a married couple when interviewed state thats 'niggars' do not have
the same genetic makeup as a white man. They imply that black people are not human and are to be

Racial Tensions And Racial Conflicts
Ferguson, Missouri is a city approximately 20 miles north of St Louis, MO. Part of St. Louis
County, MO, Ferguson's police department is composed of only two percent black officers despite
the city's demographic at 65 percent black (The Washington Post, 2014). With an overwhelming
statistic such as this, civilian–officer tensions are, unfortunately, unavoidable. Worse still, it would
seem that these tensions are a result of racial conflicts. For at least the past decade, incidents of
racial tensions have surfaced between the civilian and law enforcement communities (Ross as cited
in Lowery, Leonnig, & Berman, 2014). Residents of the Ferguson area describe a long standing
issue regarding profiling and targeting, in particular when it comes to traffic stops, even noting the
rarity of any civil communication at all between the two parties (Crawford as cited in Lowery,
Leonnig, & Berman, 2014). For years, the issue of race has gone unacknowledged and a lack of trust
in regard to law enforcement officials has prevailed (Lowery, Leonnig, & Berman, 2014). "It 's
never easy to move past the sins of our country 's history. Especially when some of that history is
only hours old" (The Washington Post, 2014). We see this in the case of Michael Brown.
On August 9, 2014, 18 year old Michael Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson.
The confrontation resulted from the officer telling Brown and a friend to walk on the sidewalk
instead of the street (Clarke & Lett, 2014).

Racial Tension In Baseball By Jackie Robinson
Jackie Robinson's life changed when he became the first black man to play in the World Series and
Major League baseball during a time of racial tension in America. These life changing events
challenged him because he had to face racially tense crowds and enured threats from teammates,
opponents and bigoted fans. In paragraph three of the text, Robinson states,"Some of my own
teammates refused to accept me because I was black", "It hadn't been easy to fight resentment
expressed by team owners and bigoted fans screaming "n––––" These quotes show challenges
Robinson faced in racial tension in crowds and fans. Despite the racism he had faced, Robinson
learned to have pride in his accomplishments and appreciate the support, courage and love shown by
his supporters. In paragraph eleven the text says, " People came in a hostile audience and made the
turnstiles hum." This quote shows the black people came to support Robinson even though they
were not fans for baseball. And made Robinson feel like to succeed in his career. Robinson
responded to these life–changing events by continuing to play baseball and prove himself on the
field Robson's reactions impacted his society and country by encouraging more blacks to play
professional sports integrating the Major Leagues and breaking the color barrier.

T.I.'s Response to Present Day Racial Tension in America
The United States has recently become a news headline for the world over the current tension
between the U.S. police force and minority groups. In 2014, the music artist T.I. released "New
National Anthem" as a response to the recent killings and injustices in America at the time through
Grand Hustle and Columbia Records. In the wake of the Michael Brown incident with law
enforcement. Even though some people may argue that "New National Anthem" is just another
mainstream song, the song holds a strong response to the struggle of growing up as an African–

The artist brings up Trayvon Martin and the similar injustices that he and Michael Brown faced, thus
implying that the young community, mainly blacks, are afraid to go out with the fear of being
attacked. It also demonstrates that, in recent years, the police force has been the executioners, the
cause, in the conflict of social and racial tension. It is to be noted as well that the police force should
not expect the black community to be at a standstill, that the black community will respond to the
actions taken by the police officers. The artist, T.I., makes this clear in his song, detailing the events
that occurred during the writing of his song. This violence and killings have gotten so out of hand, to
the point where the violence has become part of the "New National Anthem," henceforth the title of
the song.
Lastly, the song highlights the ongoing conflicts in the U.S. within two specific factions. It is
centered around the injustice and the police brutality that has occurred recently, even connecting it
back to historical efforts by the black community to relieve the oppression that follows them. It is
not just a mainstream song, but a song with a strong sense of the ongoing conflict that will be in
future history books, where historians will analyze it to get a stronger sense of the sentiments of the
African American community during this time period. This would allow them to better analyze both

Examples Of Racial Tension In To Kill A Mockingbird
This novel introduced that racial tension still continued in the South during the 1960's. In To Kill a
Mockingbird, Harper Lee introduces literary devices to address the racial tensions that still continue
in the South during the 1960's. The conflict in this story is external because it incorporates how the
black community is severely criticized by the other residents in Maycomb, Alabama. These racial
tensions caused many black people to be accused of to cleanse the south and return it to how it
originally was. First of all , hyperbole was used in this novel to show that there are still those who
want the blacks to be treated like third class citizens. As stated in the novel "They said he just broke
into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over"(pg. 235 ) this shows that they
exaggerated the truth of him escaping in order to have an excuse to kill him. This further proves that

Many of these cases involved a black male being accused of a crime they didn't commit. For
instance, " Shields argues persuasively that Lee's novel more closely reflected the less infamous

understood the tragedy that was happening in the south and wanted to demonstrates how blacks
were treated in her novel. Moreover, "To Kill a Mockingbird is the structural and ideological detail
of the Emmett Till trial of 1955, which upon close consideration seems unquestionably to have
provided a workable model for aspects of Lee's fictional Tom Robinson trial". (Chura) in Lee's
novel To Kill a Mockingbird Tom's case helped understand how the other cases in history were won
due to racists being put on jury. This further proves that racism will continue in the south even in

Former linebacker and now alumni of the Missouri tigers Michael Sam also expressed his opinion
on the racial tension going at Missouri. "There was nobody here. Two tents and a reporter," he said.

Michael Sam's statement is true and sports played a very big role in bringing the help and attention
to the campus to try and put a stop to the racism that was going on. Not only should football players
not go through this but normal students as well. Students should not have to pay thousands of dollars
for an education to get treated any kind of way. The football team makes millions of dollars every
year for the university and the players don't get paid. Most of the African American football players
have been awarded a scholarship and work hard every day to maintain the scholarship they have
earned, so they shouldn't have to face racism and got through some of the things they went through.
In my opinion I would not send my child to the university of Missouri because of the conflicts and
because people just ignore the conflicts on campus. If I were a parent I would want my child to be in

The ideal situation when I encountered a black person was to, if possible, avoid conversation. Now,
the reason this came to be is because their actions during school were extremely vulgar not only in
hallways, but in classrooms where they showed no respect to the teacher. Personally, I find that this
vulgarity stems from home; they aren't being disciplined enough to stay in line. The
inappropriateness, stubbornness, loud–mouth, and ignorance stirred the way I think. That I don't
want to associate myself with people with those qualities. These qualities I tended to avoid were
typically found in many black people in school. There's always exceptions and I've become friends
with a few, but for the most part I divert myself away from them since I generalize those qualities in
black people. For the reason I avoid them are the same reason why some white people hate them.
The older residents in my neighborhood tend to show this trait. Their opinion of black people is

black people were seen as a different race than them. Deeply embedded they casually reference

Racial Tension And Civil Unrest
As diverse as the city of Los Angeles is, it has a history of racial tension and civil unrest. From
1910, the start of the Mexican Revolution and World War I when President Theodore Roosevelt
instituted the "brown scare" (Coerver, 2001), to 1913, when the California Alien Land Act
prohibited Japanese immigrants and citizens of Japanese descent from owning land in California, to
1934, when 3000 Chinese immigrants were displaced to make way for Union Station, to 1942, when
110,000 Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps, Los Angeles has historically been
the center of racial controversy and tension ("Year by Year," 1999). In 1943, Los Angeles was also
full of young African Americans and Mexican Americans trying to protest the racism in the
American culture by expressing themselves with their own music, clothing, culture, and style
(Cosgrove, 1985). By the time of the Sleepy Lagoon murder in 1942, the stage had been set for the
Zoot Suit Riots that occurred in June 1943. Although the riots only lasted ten days, the ramifications
ranged from cultural repression on the part of many Mexican American families, to political
activism on the part of others, and the beginning of reform within the Los Angeles Police
Department.
In 1910, Mexico entered into a revolution; shortly thereafter the United States entered World War I.
About this time President Theodore Roosevelt started talking about a "brown scare"; profiling
Mexican Americans as possible "trouble makers"

The Tension Of Racial Separation
The tension of racial separation is a driving factor in Ralph Ellison's "Battle Royal". In the early
1940's the Deep South decided to create "Jim Crow" laws in which were intended to prevent blacks
from voting. For the entirety of the narrators life he has being living acceptingly and conforming to
these laws. The narrator states "On my graduation day I delivered an oration in which I showed that
humility was the secret, indeed, the very essence of progress. (Not that I believed this – how could I,
remembering my grandfather? – I only believed that it worked)" (228). This quote defines an era in
which blacks were more afraid of disruption then of the corruption surrounding them. After his
graduation day speech he was invited to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believed that by beating the narrator he would relieve himself of the pain the white have pushed
upon him. We can see this when the narrator asked why are you fighting me and he responds, "For
me, sonofabitch" (231). Rather than dispensing his anger upon his oppressor the brute of his attack
was at his own community. This is exactly what the white men wanted. After the fight was over and
Tatlock won the boys were thrown into a group and called over to collect their earnings for the
night. To deepen the wedge separating them they throw the money on a rug. Unknowingly the boys
scram in a frenzy to collect all the pay they can obtain, only to learn that they rug is electrocuted.
Once again they were put at war with each other and struggled to obtain what they all truly wanted.
The naked woman is heavily symbolic of the lack of worth the black community holds during this
time period. She is the apple in the Garden of Eden, the forbidden fruit of America, the item blacks
see every day but will never be allowed to obtain. She is a dream, an everlasting but never
obtainable goal. Just the sight of this never obtainable goal frightens the strongest and bravest of the
boys in the room, many want to run away. All are horrified of what the whites will do if they see
them staring at the woman. I believe that this woman is a symbolism of the blacks frightening away
at the sight of an

Essay On Racial Tension
There's Tension, But Why?
All you have to do is turn on the t.v. and you can tell there's a lot of racial tension, it has always been
there, but now there's one difference, the media. The media is playing a huge role in the tension
surrounding racial discrimination, by spreading it everywhere. Now that the tension's there is there
any particular race or culture or maybe a community that has the spotlight? Could there be groups or
people making it worse, would the media play a role in this too? Have there been groups like this in
the past? So what community does have the spotlight right now?
Right now most of the spotlight lies mostly on the black community. The spotlight lies on the
community, for the reason that a lot of tension is being aroused around the recent police shootings.
You see the majority of the tension is created through the argument that police shoot more black
Americans that white. But, according to The Washington Post there were 991 people shot and killed
by the police in 2015, out of those 495 were white and only 258 black people. So why is there so
much more attention on black shootings than white. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are doing this by simply by spreading the stories about the black shootings more than the
white. You may not believe this, but like I said earlier all you have to do is turn on the t.v.. One
group that is heavily involved with the current movement , that is causing the tension, is Black Lives
Matter, or BLM. BLM gets involved with the movement by setting up protest's, but the only
problem with this is that these protests tend to get violent, or they disrupt daily life. An example of
this is one of the latest protests they got involved in was in Charlotte, where the got on the interstate
and blocked it.Are their actions believed to work, or are they just causing more harm to their
movement? This leads us into our next topic of, have there been groups like this in the

African American Racial Tension
The history in the United States, has created several issues weather it involves, women's rights,
politics, or the wars that Americas have fought in. However, the issue that has caused the most
conflict throughout the years in the United States is racial tension. Racial tension was first created in
the United States, when the citizens of Europe decided that they no longer wished to do their own
labor, and instead they went to Africa and stole and enslaved the individuals of that country.
However, after several years of despicable events, the Africans who were enslaved were now free by
law. Converting from once being a slave to now wanting to be treated as in equal in the United
States was a great challenge. The white citizens of America ... Show more content on

The rioters could not be controlled. Throughout the riots, majority of the attacks were being caused
by white civilians, who were forming mobs of fifty plus members to go around town and torment or
kill black civilians. These mobs were assaulting the blacks in the community by stabbing them,
shooting them, or beating them up. And a lot of the violence that these mobs were causing usually
resulted in the death of several blacks. The blood that was shed, only increased the violence and
anger throughout the city of Chicago. This created an engagement for the black communities to
begin to attack the white community members back, harming them as well. Near the end of the five
days of the riot, approximately 500 Chicagoans of both races were injured. Leaving 16 blacks, and
15 whites dead. The riots in Chicago in 1919, should not have come as a surprise in Americas
history. This is due to the racial violence and racial tension between blacks and whites that has
occurred throughout the years. The race riot in Chicago was not the only riot that had taken place in
America. In fact, there were 26 total race riots throughout the United States. For instance, during the
1800s there were race riots in New York, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Philadelphia just to name a few.
These riots were said to be triggered by the interracial labor conflict. Since African Americans
wanted better lives for themselves and their

Racial Tensions In The Workplace
Unbeknownst to many, the workplace harbors a notorious serial killer; Race. There are several
cases, notably that of Alison Parker and Adam Ward, where racial tensions in the workplace sparked
hatred and resentment. Alison Parker and Adam Ward were murdered by Vester Flanagan, a
coworker of theirs. As for why, The Louisiana Weekly states that Vester "sued his former employer
for racial discrimination," but the claim fell through. While his reasons do not justify his actions,
racial discrimination is just as intolerable, especially in the workplace. But racial tension doesn't
come naturally to the workplace, it is brought by the people, people instilled with the ideas of their
ancestors. The repression of African Americans began with the Transatlantic

Racial Segregation And Tension In The United States
Racial segregation and tension have existed in the United States of America since the country was
first discovered by the Spanish in the 1400s. From the genesis of the colonization of the "new
world," as it was called, the Native American people were treated as an inferior species by the
European settlers. Over the course of time, in an act justified by the flawed concept of "Manifest
Destiny," these indigenous people were forcibly removed from their land. Since then, in issues such
as the shameful practice of slavery, voting rights, and general segregation, racism has continued to
infiltrate the social dynamic of our country. This dilemma still persists today. It is evidenced in
scenarios such as the current tension between the African American population and police officers
and the general racial profiling that is present in all socioeconomic groups. The question is: How can
we as a society accept our differences while at the same time view each other as equals, thus
eradicating this mindset of dissention and hostility between the races? What can I do personally to,
at the very least, improve the situation in my circle of influence? ... Show more content on

old way of thinking is contrary to what I believe God intended for us when He created humans and

Racial tensions are high in the United States currently. Donald Trump's campaign has put
Immigration policies on the hot seat. Some of the decisions the Obama administration has made has

Fox news constantly releases articles that contain very blatant attacks against immigrants in the

immigration policies allow gangs to thrive in violence–plagued NY community, say critics, is a
particularly good example of how harmful imaginative geographies are formed of the immigration
situation.

Dating Anxiety
Have you ever been really stressed about something? Think of the time when you have been the
most stressed out. Multiply that to the 10th power and you have me before a date. It seems to me
dating and stress are like salt and pepper; you almost never have one without the other. Endless
anticipations flood your mind, making it almost impossible to keep a continuous train of thought.
The worst thing about dating is that you get seriously stressed out for one lousy night. It's enough to
turn a sane mind into a basket case. So much energy is put into preparing for a night that ends up
being pretty lame. One thing is for sure; dating is not worth the stress it brings. Here are some
examples of typical stresses you are faced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tension is filling the house so you decide to wait outside.
While waiting for your date you get ambushed by mosquitoes. Now your arms are covered in itchy
red bumps that will be nagging at you the entire evening. By the time your date finally arrives, your
hair has turned into a frizzy rat's nest from waiting in the humidity, not to mention you are in the
worst mood possible. You get in the car trying to fake a genuine smile and just when you start to
chill out and relax the next issue is faced: where to go.
Of course your date leaves this crucial decision entirely up to you. After thinking through all of the
spots you like to go to, you pick one that seems to suit you both. Unfortunately, you picked the place
where your date's ex–girlfriend likes to go. So you spend the whole evening trying to spark a good
conversation as your date jealously eyeballs all the guys his ex is flirting with. After you realize the
night is not going to get any better, you get the tab and ask your date for a ride home. Just when you
think it's over and you're in the clear, you arrive at the most awkward situation of the evening:
saying goodnight.
Tradition says that there must be a kiss before the night is officially over, but there is absolutely no

Racial Tensions In America
As of recent the trending tales of police brutality have filled headlines and brought light to racial
tensions that have been brewing in America for centuries. We have seen over the past couple of
years an alarming increase of shootings in the African American community by law enforcement. In
like manner, we have seen a series of retaliation tactics and protest, both violent and peaceful. And
as we watch things unfold we question whether or not there is a real solution to the racial tensions in
America. Ironically, America is considered the melting pot of the world but still promotes the
theories of a homogeneous community and sways away from contact zones. Pratt defines contact
zones as a cultural clash of ideas, perspectives, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An autoethnography is a piece of work that is written by the marginalized culture, commonly used
to reach out to the more dominant culture. This piece of work is used to give a more authentic
representation and at the same time eradicates cultural stereotypes, misconceptions, and
generalizations produced among the dominant discourse of society. Hence, the pure splendor of
contact zones is gaining the perspectives from the marginalized people of society. When
marginalized people are able to voice their own perspectives and experiences we are able to
emphasize and receive a more transparent representation. For example, we can not seek
understanding on the topics of racial tensions and police brutality, without first finding out the
authentic perception of African Americans and other marginalized cultures who fall under the
oppression of racism in America. Marginalized individuals are not to be ignored but to be cultivated

Racial Tension, Racial Tensions, And Dramatic Social Change
Turbulent times have engulfed the United States. Violent extremism, a stagnating economy, racial
tension, and dramatic social change have left Americans worried about the country's future.
Candidates from both major political parties pander to those concerns in hopes of ascending to the
presidency. None have capitalized on those anxieties more than Donald Trump. His promise to
restore the countries "greatness" is based on his ability to rid the country of its "Alien" problems.
Hearkening to a darker time, Trump has staked his presidential campaign on placing blame for
America's troubles at the feet of non–Americans, specifically non–white Americans. Reminiscent of
debate surrounding passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act, Trump's subtle use of racism to galvanize
support has threatened to set America back one hundred twenty–five years and tear the country
apart.
Trump proposes radical change to standing immigration practice to relieve American anxieties.
During his announcement speech, he pointed the finger at Hispanic immigrants for much of
America's angst. Referring to them as criminals, Trump held non–whites, from south of the U.S,
liable for what he claimed was America's decline. A few months later, in the name of national
security, he added Muslims to his list of those responsible for America's troubles.
Asserting the measure was necessary to keep Americans safe, Trump proposed a moratorium on all
Muslim immigration into the United States. In a written statement he

between the Han and Uighur communities in Xinjiang, China was enhanced in July 2009. There are

Meanwhile, religion is their spiritual sustenance. To them, their religions are together with them as a

The Causes Of Racial Tensions In WWII
Racial Tensions in America WWII America has always been a place of great racial tensions. From
colonial times to the present day, The United States has always been racially contested. However, in
the onslaught of WWII these tensions reached new levels and different levels. Americans came to
fear the Japanese, Japanese Americans, and Mexican Americans. While many believed that these
racially based fears were unjustified, due to the racial ideas already in place, the violence and
aggression that occurred during the war, propaganda, and the government's actions, these fears were
not as unrealistic as they may appear today. During the time leading up to the onslaught of the
Second World War, the Japanese had never been considered much of a threat on the international
stage. The Japanese had stayed unindustrialized and rather primitive until this time. As far as White
Europeans were concerned the Japanese were "little men". They were not at all anywhere near
comparable to the sophisticated and racially, economically, morally, and physically superior Whites
of the Western Hemisphere (Dower 173). However, Japanese violence quickly caused these ideas of
weak and harmless Japanese to fade away. "On December 7, 1941", the Japanese military attacked
Pearl Harbor, and continued to have victories in "Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Wake
and Midway Island" soon after (Gorn 202) Theses victories revealed the power and violence the
Japanese were capable of. The "unpreparedness

Racial Tension In Strange Fruit
According to the NAACP article in the late 19th century racial tension grew throughout the United
States. More of this tension was noticeable in the Southern parts of the United States. Lynchings
were becoming a popular way of resolving some of the anger that whites had in relation to the free
blacks. From 1882–1968, 4,743 lynching's occurred in the United States. Of these people that were
lynched 3,446 were black ("History of Lynchings," 2017).Many poets and writers took those
tragedy's and decided to put their feelings into writing. "Bitter Fruit" later turned into " Strange
Fruit," was written by a Jewish high school English teacher from the Bronx and a member of the
American Communist Party. This astonishing writers name is Abel Meeropol. In 1937, Meeropol
saw a photograph of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith being lynched in the South. The two
gentleman was accused of rape towards a white lady and was sent to jail falsely for it. A number of
people broke into the jail with sledgehammers to get the two men to beat and lynch them. Meeropol
decided to write a poem about the disbelief that came across his eyes. Meeropol wrote the poem as a
protest poem. Meeropol recalled how the photograph " haunted me for days" and inspired the
writing of the poem ("Strange Fruit," 2017). He wanted to expose the American racism basing it on
the lynching of African Americans. Meeropols work was so stunning it brought major attention to
the New York lawmakers. The New York lawmakers did not

Racial Tensions And Racial Profiling
With the recent upheaval in Ferguson, Missouri, racial tensions have taken a center stage role in the
daily lives of many Americans. Color–blindness remains the gut response to inequality, but this
ignores the fact that heritage makes us inevitably different. Thus, the question, why does society
continue to assimilate other races into a color–blind whiteness instead of recognizing and affirming
difference?
In modern society, racism is on a fast track to becoming a buzz word. Terms such as "cracker" and
the "n–word" as racial slurs hurt feelings, but that does not make them racist. The racism comes
from the historical context of the word and its reinforcement through time. "Cracker" is an example
of racial prejudice but not racism because the word originally means someone in the south that
refused to integrate after the civil war. However, the "n–word" is both racial prejudice and racist due
to its historically oppressive context of slavery and association with the status of black bodies as
animals of domination. While everyone is hurt by racial prejudice, this divergence is critical when
addressing issues of race. This difference removes all chances of reverse racism that many whites
claim as a means of victimization in order to claim their oppression of minorities is reciprocal.
Essentially, racism is prejudice from a position of power and privilege.
With the surfacing of the civil rights movement, self–proclaimed advocates for equality incorporate
an ethic of

For centuries, many political and civil rights activist have taken a stance against the growing racial

instance, President Trump's campaign used disapproving religious and racial views to gain support
which subsequently escalated the already strained racial relations. Even though political elections

story about a civilian taking matters into their own hands. This is not the first story of prejudice
against police officers, or the racial ideology of "them (the police officers) versus us (the public)."
Another story would take place on December 19th, 2014. On that day, Ismaaiyl Brinsley would

Racial Tension Among The Black And White Societies

  • 1. Racial Tension Among The Black And White Societies Recently in class we observed the controversial film A Raisin in the Sun which initially was a play written by Lorraine Hansberry in the late 1950s. Lorraine was the youngest of her siblings and grew up in rural Chicago back during the era of segregation. It was evident that her hard trials growing up directly correlated with this film as the setting of the plot occurred in her hometown, Chicago, right before the Civil Rights Movement began. This explicit film vividly conveyed many important issues that were ongoing in American history which saw the nation go from economic prosperity to racial tension and turmoil briefly after World War II. Through Hansberry's production of this play the viewer is given an honest depiction of the black family and contrary to popular belief, the black community of that time was not comedic or flattering which we sometimes see in today's society. A Raisin in the Sun successfully specifies the racial tension amongst the black and white societies and strongly illustrates the difficulty in which the main characters had in trying to respond to racial oppression situations throughout the film. The Younger family which Hansberry focuses on is a black family struggling with poverty, yet dreaming of possessing a lifestyle far more promising. This covers two of the main themes of the film which I believe are the concepts of dreams and money. Walter Younger, who is Lena's only son serves both as an antagonist and protagonist in the film due to his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Racial Tension In America Essay The Internet, social media, and the emergence of terrorist groups in America; what do these three have in common? The mere fact that they are some America's daily trends of the modern era. Being a child of the millennial age, I strongly feel as if no one has experienced racial tension in America as much as my fellow millennials and I. We see it in news headlines all over, the Internet, and hear about it during our daily commutes. All asking one question; what's your opinion on this racial inequality? Since we are the land of the free, the opinion of the public is highly valued, as well as diverse. Recently, the diversity has become more than just the simple opinions of the people; it's become the issue of racial tension. A tension so deep that it has accounted for many physical altercations, uproars, and unfortunate deaths within the country. How do you put into this detrimental norm of society you ask? Here's what I think. For starters, I highly do not believe that placing the blame on a certain race, which has been subtly going on within the American public, is the effective way to go. The most effective way to handle the situation, in my sincere opinion, is to take a look at the history of America's diverse cultures, instead of re–creating the mistakes made by our predecessors. The segregation era of the 1950s, the mistreatment of the Native ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There will always be a new and effective way to solving the racial divisions caused by the issue. Importantly, these new and effective ways will only emerge if the America public is ready to discuss and share their input on fixing the problem, rather than exploiting there opinions that increase the problem. With all suggestions considered the following remains true; a general consensus, a national discussion, or a national evaluation is in much need. We can't move forward if no one is willing to take a step in the right direction for a nationwide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Migration And Racial Tension Of Australia Migration and racial tension I believe that the two topics that I have chosen relate to each other in many ways. The racial tension came from the migrating races to Australia, and the issues that the Australians of the time had with the "new people". The migration occurred because there was a growing business in a new country, there were more opportunities for trade and everyone wanted to try their luck on the gold fields. I found the migrating story's from the Chinese to be more of an interesting theme. This is the same with the racial tension, the mass groups of Chinese were the main targets with the racism. Most migrants that came to Australia to grab a share of the gold rush, left behind family and home. In traditional Chinese culture this was particularly difficult for them to come from a parent's heavy focused family system, to an alien country to live. The Chinese people that came to Australia were typically men brining there family over with them to work for an income that would be big enough to support them. The wife however was left at home to forfill the role of looking after her in–laws in this time. The family would have to work for them aswell, and send a percentage of there profit over. As the population of chinses immergents started to climb, they were starting to become apart of population statistics. If you were Chinese by birth and you were outside NSW, the governments of the other states took advantage of you and made you pay a special reentry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Racial Tensions In The United States Racial tensions in the United States have been an ongoing event since around slavery and Jim Crow Laws. Americans have focused all of their attention on how police officers treat black Americans. The Criminal Justice System states, "Black Americans are more likely to have their cars searched." People moving around in a vehicle can indicate efforts to retrieve or conceal a weapon, hide drugs, liquor, or stolen property. If the officer suspects anything suspicious, then they have a right to search your vehicle. This gives people the idea that officers are racist and treat white Americans with more respect. Logically, I believe that if a person driving a car isn't handling things appropriately, then they will be pulled over and questioned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Racial Tension and The Declaration of Independence "The past is never dead. It's not even past." Requiem of a Nun by William Faulkner. In a speech given by commander–in–chief, president Barack Obama he uses this quote as an example to describe the racial situation that plagues contemporary America. Over two hundred years ago a document was signed promising no guaranteeing that every man was entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This document found that it was self evident, that all men were created equal and that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness). When it was written the Declaration of Independence guaranteed every man he shall not be denied certain unalienable rights by the government and if his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The black people who have had a horrific experience ever since they were captured and brought to this country. Plagued with memories of embarrassment and the injustice of slavery, Jim Crow laws, one–drop doctrines, inflicted upon them by depraved white men and women who thought nothing more of them than animal that could be exploited and to add insult to injury now that African Americans have come to a point where they are finally getting a milliliter of respect they are told by their Caucasian counter parts to just get over it (slavery, Jim Crow, and the countless other injustices and embarrassments we have had to suffer). This has led to some African Americans developing a "the white man is keeping me down" mentality that is not only detrimental to himself but also the African–American and American community. In many cases this mentality has been justified by the institution of doctrines such as the one– drop doctrine or one drop rule stating that a person could have between one–eighth and one–quarter African blood and be considered legally white entitling said person to all the right of an American citizen. Although justified to a certain degree this mentality is counterproductive to the abolishment of bigotry and the beginning of social, cultural and racial understanding amongst all Americans whether they are black, white, brown, red, yellow, green or purple. Because black people were mainly the victims in early history, many of their thoughts are influenced by their past. This reality can be hard to erase from the minds of those who experienced such injustice. In the story 'A Worn Path', with its location in the south, it is almost guaranteed that such tension will be present. But, we should always remember that life is not a contest to see who can drop into the grave the fastest. Guard your mental and physical health by slowing down to a reasonable pace. Life failures caused by our mishandling of the situation may lead to stress, conflict, frustration, and at the end, we need to cope with it. Experiencing depression is like coming to a dead end. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 brought an end to segregation and promoted full equal opportunities for not only African Americans but other ethnicities as well. America elected Barack Obama as its president, allowed certain months to represent cultural awareness, and immigration numbers augmented. However, regardless of the fact that the country becomes increasingly diverse by the day and heavy, racial social boundaries no longer exist, racism, prejudice, and stereotypes still exist. "The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color–line" (McQuade 391) says it the best; racial and ethnicity still remain underlying causes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Losing to the white man became routine, primarily because African Americans seemingly relinquished the struggle. Simple things such as small acts of racism affect them whereas their ancestors faced deeper issues. The message that Cosby wanted the most emphasis on revolves around the idea that blacks should worry more about judging themselves instead of worry about the whites judging them on the content on their character. However, that doesn't seem like an attainable possibility. Obviously, the majority of racism in today's society fell into extinction, but not all. People are still failing to accept equality for a variety of reasons. As Cosby said, history plays an important role but then again it's even natural for people to associate themselves by commonalities in physical appearances. Frankly, removing something natural and instilled either cannot be done or it takes a great amount of time. Therefore, the inequality exists in today's society. Early Sunday, Jake England, 19, and Alvin Watts, 32, found themselves in handcuffs after a series of tips led investigators to England's burned pickup truck, said to be the vehicle used in several reported crime scenes that day. • 17. Racial Tension And Police Brutality Racial tension and police brutality are the most controversial topics in the United States today. As a society, we never really know what to do with racism. The increase tensions between the African American community and Caucasian community has been at an ultimate high recently. The contemporary events in places such as Missouri, Florida, Chicago, etc. have highlighted the seriousness of these issues. In Ferguson, Missouri, 18–year–old African American male Michael Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson. The incident involving Brown created a critical environment in Ferguson and became a dangerous and controversial time in America. The events following the initial incident impacted Missouri significantly. Following this incident, a ripple effect of police brutality incidents took place. The question "Is the law is really doing their job and protecting us?" Was created. The issue of police brutality is a significant issue within America today. I strongly think that this issue is an important issue because as civilians, individuals should feel protected by their law system and officers. But also, police officers should not be anxious to arrest individuals and/or patrol communities because of tensions created within the community. Specifically, since Michael Brown's death police officers become apprehensive to do their job because of the split between civilians and the police force during this time. One incident that created fear, anxiousness, and anger ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is evident within the two children known as Scout and Jem., where their character develops and changes drastically throughout the story due to crucial and vital lessons that not only mature them but open them up to new perspectives, maturity and show them how courage can take many forms. As many would say that Atticus is courageous by striving to do the right thing, others like Jem and Scout, during the first segment of the book, would see their father as an uncourageous and inactive hero. As children, their view is varied and restricted due to the fact that Scout and Jem criticise Atticus' ability to play sports. They constantly complain about his ability to football and his lawyering skills. They do not appreciate the courage and risk he is taking by defending an African– American and doing the right thing. Perhaps in a child's perspective, courage is seen when he shoots the dog with a rifle. However, as they later on see that courage can take many forms like Ms. Dubose's morphine addiction and how Atticus takes the leap of faith by choosing to do the right thing and protect Tom Robinson. This resonates with Jem because he sees his father's Lawyering abilities and how he is using the for the good of Maycomb. One can tell that Jem has a lot of hope in him and as if Atticus might actually win the case. However, as realistic and compelling as the evidence might seem, Jem is unaware of the racist adult society of maycomb. • 21. The Racial Tension in the NFL Author Peter S. Morris once said, "If baseball is America's favorite pastime, then football must be its passion" (Morris, 2004). Throughout the years, the sport of football has risen through the ranks to become the spectator sport in North America. Football has been interwoven into the "American psyche" and culture. Millions of dedicated and loyal fans keenly await the chance to pack out stadiums at the beginning of each National Football League (NFL) season. They stare into the dazzling field lights, clothe themselves in paraphernalia, and wildly cheer on the players of their chosen team. Football has become a part of the American life. The NFL embodies the "fun" in American society. It is seventeen weeks filled with excitement, high spirits, and a competitive atmosphere. A piece of American society that isn't so jubilant has been making serious headlines as of lately. These series of incidents have been a Public Relations nightmare for the beloved league. The use of racial slurs both on the field and off the field by NFL players is an issue that, until recently, was not openly discussed in the sport. The number of "incidents" has gradually increased throughout the years. As a solution to this growing problem, NFL committees have recently decided to impose a 15 yard penalty on any and all players that use the racial slur "Nigga(er)" while playing the game. • 23. Racial Tension In The United States Racial tension in the United States reached a new high in the second half of the twentieth century. Black Power movements arose as blacks realized that negotiations and peace talks for integration could only take them so far in the fight against racism. Particularly, lacks found inspiration in Africa, which motivated them to act more aggressively against racist thinking (Marable 105). Furthermore, the Vietnam War added to the loss of rationale as many Americans deemed the war unnecessary. This affected the black community in that despite the official end of segregation in the armed forces, blacks were widely unrepresented in the higher ranks (97). Justice Ginsburg acknowledges this specifically by revealing that the Sentencing Commission itself found the disparity set by the 1986 Act "greater than necessary" (110). This case is a victory for Kimbrough as the Court overturned the appeal and allowed him to carry on with the sentence the district court first presented. The blacks and white were not equal. It was a time of black oppression an injustice. These themes are shown through the texts, 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett, 'Mississippi Burning' directed by Allan Parker, 'To Kill a Mocking Bird' by Harper Lee and 'Caged Bird' by Maya Angelon. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We cannot quite comprehend the situation. Racism is birthed out of fear of the other. The authors/directors convey that blacks fear whites because they want to stay alive and keep their families. They are afraid of their houses being burnt down (Mississippi Burning), getting hung (To Kill A Mocking Bird), and being acused of crimes that were not committed (The Help). There is a powerful scene in Mississippi Burning when a black man is questioned by an FBI agent about the murder of some young boys committed by the Ku Klux Klan. Fear is shown through his body language as he does not make direct eye contact and appears to sound quite nervous. In the dialogue he repeats 'please sir i have nothing to say.' This captures that he is afraid of speaking against the white men incase his house is burnt and his children witness his murder. Within the texts, the white man fears the black because he is scared of losing control and superiority. They justify they are right by saying the blacks have diseases and are a sub specie. In The Help Miss Hilly truly buys into the lie. 'Its plain dangerous they carry different diseases, i'll do whatever it takes to protect our children.' • 29. Racial Tensions And Racial Conflicts Ferguson, Missouri is a city approximately 20 miles north of St Louis, MO. Part of St. Louis County, MO, Ferguson's police department is composed of only two percent black officers despite the city's demographic at 65 percent black (The Washington Post, 2014). With an overwhelming statistic such as this, civilian–officer tensions are, unfortunately, unavoidable. Worse still, it would seem that these tensions are a result of racial conflicts. For at least the past decade, incidents of racial tensions have surfaced between the civilian and law enforcement communities (Ross as cited in Lowery, Leonnig, & Berman, 2014). Residents of the Ferguson area describe a long standing issue regarding profiling and targeting, in particular when it comes to traffic stops, even noting the rarity of any civil communication at all between the two parties (Crawford as cited in Lowery, Leonnig, & Berman, 2014). For years, the issue of race has gone unacknowledged and a lack of trust in regard to law enforcement officials has prevailed (Lowery, Leonnig, & Berman, 2014). "It 's never easy to move past the sins of our country 's history. Especially when some of that history is only hours old" (The Washington Post, 2014). We see this in the case of Michael Brown. On August 9, 2014, 18 year old Michael Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson. The confrontation resulted from the officer telling Brown and a friend to walk on the sidewalk instead of the street (Clarke & Lett, 2014). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These life changing events challenged him because he had to face racially tense crowds and enured threats from teammates, opponents and bigoted fans. In paragraph three of the text, Robinson states,"Some of my own teammates refused to accept me because I was black", "It hadn't been easy to fight resentment expressed by team owners and bigoted fans screaming "n––––" These quotes show challenges Robinson faced in racial tension in crowds and fans. Despite the racism he had faced, Robinson learned to have pride in his accomplishments and appreciate the support, courage and love shown by his supporters. In paragraph eleven the text says, " People came in a hostile audience and made the turnstiles hum." In 2014, the music artist T.I. released "New National Anthem" as a response to the recent killings and injustices in America at the time through Grand Hustle and Columbia Records. In the wake of the Michael Brown incident with law enforcement. The artist brings up Trayvon Martin and the similar injustices that he and Michael Brown faced, thus implying that the young community, mainly blacks, are afraid to go out with the fear of being attacked. It also demonstrates that, in recent years, the police force has been the executioners, the cause, in the conflict of social and racial tension. It is to be noted as well that the police force should not expect the black community to be at a standstill, that the black community will respond to the actions taken by the police officers. The artist, T.I., makes this clear in his song, detailing the events that occurred during the writing of his song. This violence and killings have gotten so out of hand, to the point where the violence has become part of the "New National Anthem," henceforth the title of the song. Lastly, the song highlights the ongoing conflicts in the U.S. within two specific factions. It is centered around the injustice and the police brutality that has occurred recently, even connecting it back to historical efforts by the black community to relieve the oppression that follows them. It is not just a mainstream song, but a song with a strong sense of the ongoing conflict that will be in future history books, where historians will analyze it to get a stronger sense of the sentiments of the African American community during this time period. • 37. Examples Of Racial Tension In To Kill A Mockingbird This novel introduced that racial tension still continued in the South during the 1960's. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee introduces literary devices to address the racial tensions that still continue in the South during the 1960's. The conflict in this story is external because it incorporates how the black community is severely criticized by the other residents in Maycomb, Alabama. These racial tensions caused many black people to be accused of to cleanse the south and return it to how it originally was. First of all , hyperbole was used in this novel to show that there are still those who want the blacks to be treated like third class citizens. As stated in the novel "They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over"(pg. 235 ) this shows that they exaggerated the truth of him escaping in order to have an excuse to kill him. This further proves that the racial tensions in the South continued and there would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, " Shields argues persuasively that Lee's novel more closely reflected the less infamous 1933 case of Walter Lett, a black man accused of raping a white woman" (Best) this proves that Lee understood the tragedy that was happening in the south and wanted to demonstrates how blacks were treated in her novel. Moreover, "To Kill a Mockingbird is the structural and ideological detail of the Emmett Till trial of 1955, which upon close consideration seems unquestionably to have provided a workable model for aspects of Lee's fictional Tom Robinson trial". Michael Sam's statement is true and sports played a very big role in bringing the help and attention to the campus to try and put a stop to the racism that was going on. Not only should football players not go through this but normal students as well. Students should not have to pay thousands of dollars for an education to get treated any kind of way. The football team makes millions of dollars every year for the university and the players don't get paid. Most of the African American football players have been awarded a scholarship and work hard every day to maintain the scholarship they have earned, so they shouldn't have to face racism and got through some of the things they went through. In my opinion I would not send my child to the university of Missouri because of the conflicts and because people just ignore the conflicts on campus. The ideal situation when I encountered a black person was to, if possible, avoid conversation. Now, the reason this came to be is because their actions during school were extremely vulgar not only in hallways, but in classrooms where they showed no respect to the teacher. Personally, I find that this vulgarity stems from home; they aren't being disciplined enough to stay in line. The inappropriateness, stubbornness, loud–mouth, and ignorance stirred the way I think. That I don't want to associate myself with people with those qualities. These qualities I tended to avoid were typically found in many black people in school. There's always exceptions and I've become friends with a few, but for the most part I divert myself away from them since I generalize those qualities in black people. For the reason I avoid them are the same reason why some white people hate them. The older residents in my neighborhood tend to show this trait. Their opinion of black people is extremely poor; referring to them as things rather than people. The only way I can understand thier opinion is the time period by which they were raised. Growing up when racial tension were high; black people were seen as a different race than them. From 1910, the start of the Mexican Revolution and World War I when President Theodore Roosevelt instituted the "brown scare" (Coerver, 2001), to 1913, when the California Alien Land Act prohibited Japanese immigrants and citizens of Japanese descent from owning land in California, to 1934, when 3000 Chinese immigrants were displaced to make way for Union Station, to 1942, when 110,000 Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps, Los Angeles has historically been the center of racial controversy and tension ("Year by Year," 1999). In 1943, Los Angeles was also full of young African Americans and Mexican Americans trying to protest the racism in the American culture by expressing themselves with their own music, clothing, culture, and style (Cosgrove, 1985). By the time of the Sleepy Lagoon murder in 1942, the stage had been set for the Zoot Suit Riots that occurred in June 1943. Although the riots only lasted ten days, the ramifications ranged from cultural repression on the part of many Mexican American families, to political activism on the part of others, and the beginning of reform within the Los Angeles Police Department. However, the issue that has caused the most conflict throughout the years in the United States is racial tension. And a lot of the violence that these mobs were causing usually resulted in the death of several blacks. The blood that was shed, only increased the violence and anger throughout the city of Chicago. This created an engagement for the black communities to begin to attack the white community members back, harming them as well. Near the end of the five days of the riot, approximately 500 Chicagoans of both races were injured. Leaving 16 blacks, and 15 whites dead. The riots in Chicago in 1919, should not have come as a surprise in Americas history. This is due to the racial violence and racial tension between blacks and whites that has occurred throughout the years. The race riot in Chicago was not the only riot that had taken place in America. In fact, there were 26 total race riots throughout the United States. For instance, during the 1800s there were race riots in New York, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Philadelphia just to name a few. • 53. Racial Segregation And Tension In The United States Racial segregation and tension have existed in the United States of America since the country was first discovered by the Spanish in the 1400s. From the genesis of the colonization of the "new world," as it was called, the Native American people were treated as an inferior species by the European settlers. Over the course of time, in an act justified by the flawed concept of "Manifest Destiny," these indigenous people were forcibly removed from their land. Since then, in issues such as the shameful practice of slavery, voting rights, and general segregation, racism has continued to infiltrate the social dynamic of our country. This dilemma still persists today. It is evidenced in scenarios such as the current tension between the African American population and police officers and the general racial profiling that is present in all socioeconomic groups. Violent extremism, a stagnating economy, racial tension, and dramatic social change have left Americans worried about the country's future. Candidates from both major political parties pander to those concerns in hopes of ascending to the presidency. None have capitalized on those anxieties more than Donald Trump. His promise to restore the countries "greatness" is based on his ability to rid the country of its "Alien" problems. Hearkening to a darker time, Trump has staked his presidential campaign on placing blame for America's troubles at the feet of non–Americans, specifically non–white Americans. Reminiscent of debate surrounding passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act, Trump's subtle use of racism to galvanize support has threatened to set America back one hundred twenty–five years and tear the country apart. Trump proposes radical change to standing immigration practice to relieve American anxieties. During his announcement speech, he pointed the finger at Hispanic immigrants for much of America's angst. Referring to them as criminals, Trump held non–whites, from south of the U.S, liable for what he claimed was America's decline. From colonial times to the present day, The United States has always been racially contested. However, in the onslaught of WWII these tensions reached new levels and different levels. Americans came to fear the Japanese, Japanese Americans, and Mexican Americans. While many believed that these racially based fears were unjustified, due to the racial ideas already in place, the violence and aggression that occurred during the war, propaganda, and the government's actions, these fears were not as unrealistic as they may appear today. During the time leading up to the onslaught of the Second World War, the Japanese had never been considered much of a threat on the international stage. The Japanese had stayed unindustrialized and rather primitive until this time. As far as White Europeans were concerned the Japanese were "little men". They were not at all anywhere near comparable to the sophisticated and racially, economically, morally, and physically superior Whites of the Western Hemisphere (Dower 173). However, Japanese violence quickly caused these ideas of weak and harmless Japanese to fade away. "On December 7, 1941", the Japanese military attacked Pearl Harbor, and continued to have victories in "Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Wake and Midway Island" soon after (Gorn 202) Theses victories revealed the power and violence the Japanese were capable of. More of this tension was noticeable in the Southern parts of the United States. Lynchings were becoming a popular way of resolving some of the anger that whites had in relation to the free blacks. From 1882–1968, 4,743 lynching's occurred in the United States. Of these people that were lynched 3,446 were black ("History of Lynchings," 2017).Many poets and writers took those tragedy's and decided to put their feelings into writing. The two gentleman was accused of rape towards a white lady and was sent to jail falsely for it. A number of people broke into the jail with sledgehammers to get the two men to beat and lynch them. Meeropol decided to write a poem about the disbelief that came across his eyes. Meeropol wrote the poem as a protest poem. Meeropol recalled how the photograph " haunted me for days" and inspired the writing of the poem ("Strange Fruit," 2017). • 73. Racial Tensions And Racial Profiling With the recent upheaval in Ferguson, Missouri, racial tensions have taken a center stage role in the daily lives of many Americans. Color–blindness remains the gut response to inequality, but this ignores the fact that heritage makes us inevitably different. Thus, the question, why does society continue to assimilate other races into a color–blind whiteness instead of recognizing and affirming difference? In modern society, racism is on a fast track to becoming a buzz word. Terms such as "cracker" and the "n–word" as racial slurs hurt feelings, but that does not make them racist. The racism comes from the historical context of the word and its reinforcement through time. "Cracker" is an example of racial prejudice but not racism because the word originally means someone in the south that refused to integrate after the civil war. However, the "n–word" is both racial prejudice and racist due to its historically oppressive context of slavery and association with the status of black bodies as animals of domination. While everyone is hurt by racial prejudice, this divergence is critical when addressing issues of race. This difference removes all chances of reverse racism that many whites claim as a means of victimization in order to claim their oppression of minorities is reciprocal. Essentially, racism is prejudice from a position of power and privilege. With the surfacing of the civil rights movement, self–proclaimed advocates for equality incorporate an ethic of ...
