1. Introduction
From this project, we are asked to design out own city that has good sustainable green
features that will sustain itself. Before starting to design our own, we are first required to do
some research on towns and cities. This includes historical, present and future cities that has or
will exist.
To plan for the future, we have to study the past. Many great and beautiful cities existed
back then and we can learn from their mistakes to create a better future city. Cities have been
called the highest forms of social organization. Think of the complexity of road systems,
transportation, building laws, markets, business centre, sports events, food distribution,
educational systems, sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing and etcetera. But that complexity
didn't spring up over night. It is the result of long years of human development.
Cities contain within them the key challenges facing our civilization. There are two sides of
a city, the positive and the negative, the promise of success and the threat of disaster. We can
certainly make improvements to older cities. A great city is a city that is sustainable and liveable.

Definition of a city
A place where people live that is larger or more important than a town; an area where
many people live and work. It can also be defined as an inhabited place of greater size,
population, or importance than a town or village. A city is not just an overgrown village. It has
its own economy. Goods are made and traded there.
Brief history of a town
The first cities appeared in Neolithic times when the development of agricultural
techniques assured extra crop are large enough to sustain a permanent population. Cities are
physical artifacts inserted into a pre-existing natural world, and natural built must be respected if
a settlement is to survive and prosper. Cities must conform to the landscape in which they are
located, although technologies have gradually been developed to reorganize the land to suit
human purposes.
What makes a city/ town
A city is a place with government entity that has powers delegated by the state and
country and has been created and approved by the voters of the city. A city is also a place that
provides us with everything we need to survive and live well.
A good township
1. Fully equipped facilities for the public’s use
2. Has a good job based for the citizens to earn money
3. A good township meaning a place that is happening and therefore a town that has good
tourism will definitely make a good township
4. The town has to have good sense of community and communication. For example :
school events, family day etc
5. A town that consist of quality necessities
6. A good and sustainable layout
7. good site might be on a bend in a navigable river, or beside a river crossing.
What will future towns be like?

Future cities will have to be very efficient because theses cities can learn the past
mistakes of other cities. It will also be a place that stimulates multidisciplinary work, promoting
collaboration among partners from different areas. Future cities will also need to adapt to the
Green Technology in construction, management and maintenance. Green technology will not
only be able to help the environment but it will also help to sustain the town itself than to depend
on other sources.

Ancient Cities / towns
Among the earliest cities in the world are:
Roman
In the century before the Roman conquest
a few tribal centres (oppida) grew up in
southern Britain, though only one appears
truly urban - Calleva, which was laid out
c. 25 BC on a grid plan influenced by
Roman town planning. Towns were laid
out on a grid plan, with a forum in the
centre forming a market place, surrounded
by shops and offices. In the 4th century
AD many gained defenses.

The inspiration I have for town came from Karlsruhe.
According to legend, the name Karlsruhe, which
translates as Charles’ repose, was given to the new city
after a hunting trip when Charles III William,
Margrave of Baden-Durlach, woke from a dream in
which he dreamt of founding his new city.
Charles William founded the city on June 17, 1715, after
a dispute with the citizens of his previous capital,
Durlach. The founding of the city is closely linked to
the construction of the palace. Karlsruhe became the capital of Baden-Durlach and in 1771 of the
united Baden until 1945. Built in 1822, the "Ständehaus" was the first parliament building in a
German State. In the aftermath of the democratic revolution of 1848, a republican government
was elected here.
Much of the central area, including the
palace, was reduced to rubble by Allied
bombing during World War II but was
rebuilt after the war. Located in the
American zone of the post-war Allied
occupation, Karlsruhe was home to an
American military base, established in
1945. In 1995, the bases closed and their
facilities were turned over to the city of
Karlsruhe.

(a) Business (b) Agriculture
Business is one of the main features in Insel
because there is a town center or also known as
Central Business District right in the center of the
island. At the Central Business District, jobs,
education, medical help and basic needs are
provided. This ensures that the citizens of Insel
will have their necessities without worrying or
looking for other sources.
Besides business being the main feature of Insel, agriculture
also plays a very important role in the island on Insel.
Because Insel is built in the middle of Kenyir Lake, water
the surrounds Insel are half sea water, half river water
depending on which side of the island. Agriculture is
strongly needed by Insel because it needs to provide food for
the island for it to sustain itself. A wide field of plant
plantations are located on the south east of the island where
land is more fertile for the plants to grow.
I got the idea of a business and agricultural town from Al Maryah Island.

It is designated by the emirate's Urban Planning Council to be the capital's Central
Business District (CBD).
Sowwah Square is the exclusively commercial first
phase of Abu Dhabi's new Central Business
District (CBD). Now leasing, this flagship 450,000
sqm office, retail and hotel development delivers
the best office space in the city and provides an
imposing stage for world business at the core of
Abu Dhabi.
Abu Dhabi, 26 December, 2012: Mubadala
Real Estate & Infrastructure (MREI), a business
unit of Mubadala Development Company

CBD-Central Business District.
Consists of office buildings, commercial buildings, government buildings (Isnel Parlimen)and
etc. it is also the work area for the public.
This zone also consists of service apartments, high density residential area and some historical
tourist attraction. l to
.
Industrial Zone
This zone is for the water turbines to transform kinetic energy from the
waves to electrical energy for the town.
Commercial Zone
This zone consists of the education/ institutional areas, medical centers, retail shops and
shopping malls.
Residential Zone
There are 3 types of residential zones, which are:
1. High density residential area. Eg: Condominium, apartments, flats and etc.
2. Medium density residential are. Eg: semi-d.
3. Low density residential area. Eg: Bunglos.
Water Treatment Zone
This zone is specifically for water to be treated here and to be reused back by the town. Water
will be recycled therefore less water will be wasted.
Park Zones
This areas are for small commercial parks that will help maintain a balance ecosystem within the
town.
Agricultural Zones This zones are for planting plants that will help provide basic needs for the
town to sustain itself.
The 4 sustainable features
(a) Recycle water treatment
Water from the houses and buildings will be
transported to the water treatment plant.
At here, water that is treated will be reused back by
the town for domestic uses such as watering the
plants and toilet flush.
Access water will be the next batch of water that will
be treated, filtered and purified to be used for the
town’s residence consumption.

14
ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation
This water will be very clean unlike like the other water. Therefore this water will be used for the
citizen’s consumption.
Water on this island will be reused and recycled constantly thus allowing the island to sustain
itself.
(b) Crop Rotation
Crop rotation is a process in which a certain plant will
not be planted on the same area as before. This is to
ensure that the soil will not be lacking in certain
minerals because different kinds of plants needs different
minerals.
Crop rotation gives various nutrients to the soil. A
traditional element of crop rotation is the replenishment
of nitrogen through the use of green manure in sequence
with cereals and other crops. Crop rotation also mitigates
the build-up of pathogens and pests that often occurs
when one species is continuously cropped, and can also improve soil structure and fertility by
alternating deep-rooted and shallow-rooted plants. Crop rotation is one component of
polyculture.
(c) Wave Technology
Unlike fossil-fueled power plants,
wave and tidal energy facilities
generate electricity without producing
any pollutant emissions or greenhouse
gases. Since the first wave and tidal
energy facilities are currently being
CHRISTINA NG SUE LI| 0319671 | Mr. Cherng Yih| FNBE APR 2014 | Taylor’s University
15
ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation
deployed, the full environmental impacts of wave and tidal power remain uncertain but
are projected to be small.
The tidal wave technology is the use of kinetic energy produced from the movement of the waves
to spin the turbine that is then converted to electrical energy that will provide electricity to the
town.
Wave Energy --> Kinetic Energy ---> Electrical Energy.
These turbines are located on the East side of the island because the wave current there is
stronger, therefore spinning the turbine more, resulting more electrical energy produced.
(d) Connecting Bridges
There are bridges connecting from the high density residential area to the commercial buildings,
close to the Central Business Distrct area.
This is to allow residence to get to their work
place without driving. This way, its is not only
eco friendly but it is also convenient for the
residence.
The bridges are simple structures connecting 2
buildings. These bridges are also build above the
bicycle tracks. This will allow more convenience
to street pedestrians and cyclist.
Inside these bridges will also be decorated and
furnished nicely to provide a more comfortable vibe
for the users.
This will not only lighten up the vibe of the bridges
but will also encourage the citizens to use the bridges.
7. Conclusion
From this project, I’ve learnt that when planning a town is not to make it look nice or
beautiful, that is just the secondary purpose. The main purpose of this town planning is to put in
sustainable features to ensure that the town can sustain and live by itself and not depend on
outsiders to support them.
Besides that, the sustainable features must also be related to the town. For example, if you
put solar panels on a island and compare it to a normal land with solar panels, there is no
CHRISTINA NG SUE LI| 0319671 | Mr. Cherng Yih| FNBE APR 2014 | Taylor’s University
16
ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation
difference. Therefore to improve it, we should put tidal wave technology to the island. In this
way, the island and the land will have a difference.
In conclusion, we need to be smart when come to planning a town. We cannot just
simply put in and take out elements from a town. Sustainable features are also important to
sustain a town keeping it eco-friendly.

  • 3. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation 1. Introduction From this project, we are asked to design out own city that has good sustainable green features that will sustain itself. Before starting to design our own, we are first required to do some research on towns and cities. This includes historical, present and future cities that has or will exist. To plan for the future, we have to study the past. Many great and beautiful cities existed back then and we can learn from their mistakes to create a better future city. Cities have been called the highest forms of social organization. Think of the complexity of road systems, transportation, building laws, markets, business centre, sports events, food distribution, educational systems, sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing and etcetera. But that complexity didn't spring up over night. It is the result of long years of human development. Cities contain within them the key challenges facing our civilization. There are two sides of a city, the positive and the negative, the promise of success and the threat of disaster. We can certainly make improvements to older cities. A great city is a city that is sustainable and liveable. CHRISTINA NG SUE LI| 0319671 | Mr. Cherng Yih| FNBE APR 2014 | Taylor’s University 3

  • 5. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation Definition of a city A place where people live that is larger or more important than a town; an area where many people live and work. It can also be defined as an inhabited place of greater size, population, or importance than a town or village. A city is not just an overgrown village. It has its own economy. Goods are made and traded there. Brief history of a town The first cities appeared in Neolithic times when the development of agricultural techniques assured extra crop are large enough to sustain a permanent population. Cities are physical artifacts inserted into a pre-existing natural world, and natural built must be respected if a settlement is to survive and prosper. Cities must conform to the landscape in which they are located, although technologies have gradually been developed to reorganize the land to suit human purposes. What makes a city/ town A city is a place with government entity that has powers delegated by the state and country and has been created and approved by the voters of the city. A city is also a place that provides us with everything we need to survive and live well. A good township 1. Fully equipped facilities for the public’s use 2. Has a good job based for the citizens to earn money 3. A good township meaning a place that is happening and therefore a town that has good tourism will definitely make a good township 4. The town has to have good sense of community and communication. For example : school events, family day etc 5. A town that consist of quality necessities 6. A good and sustainable layout 7. good site might be on a bend in a navigable river, or beside a river crossing. What will future towns be like? • 6. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation Future cities will have to be very efficient because theses cities can learn the past mistakes of other cities. It will also be a place that stimulates multidisciplinary work, promoting collaboration among partners from different areas. Future cities will also need to adapt to the Green Technology in construction, management and maintenance. Green technology will not only be able to help the environment but it will also help to sustain the town itself than to depend on other sources. 3.Investigation & Data Collection: Ancient Cities / towns Among the earliest cities in the world are: Roman In the century before the Roman conquest a few tribal centres (oppida) grew up in southern Britain, though only one appears truly urban - Calleva, which was laid out c. 25 BC on a grid plan influenced by Roman town planning. Towns were laid out on a grid plan, with a forum in the centre forming a market place, surrounded by shops and offices. In the 4th century AD many gained defenses. • 7. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation The inspiration I have for town came from Karlsruhe. According to legend, the name Karlsruhe, which translates as Charles’ repose, was given to the new city after a hunting trip when Charles III William, Margrave of Baden-Durlach, woke from a dream in which he dreamt of founding his new city. Charles William founded the city on June 17, 1715, after a dispute with the citizens of his previous capital, Durlach. The founding of the city is closely linked to the construction of the palace. Karlsruhe became the capital of Baden-Durlach and in 1771 of the united Baden until 1945. Built in 1822, the "Ständehaus" was the first parliament building in a German State. In the aftermath of the democratic revolution of 1848, a republican government was elected here. Much of the central area, including the palace, was reduced to rubble by Allied bombing during World War II but was rebuilt after the war. Located in the American zone of the post-war Allied occupation, Karlsruhe was home to an American military base, established in 1945. In 1995, the bases closed and their facilities were turned over to the city of Karlsruhe. 4. Investigation & Data Collection: Present Towns / township In Insel, my town will be concentrating on 4 sustainable features. Which are: 1. Recycle Water Treatment System 2. Crop Rotation 3. Tidal Wave Technology 4. Connecting Bridges My town, Insel concentrates on 2 things : CHRISTINA NG SUE LI| 0319671 | Mr. Cherng Yih| FNBE APR 2014 | Taylor’s University 7
  • 8. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation (a) Business (b) Agriculture Business is one of the main features in Insel because there is a town center or also known as Central Business District right in the center of the island. At the Central Business District, jobs, education, medical help and basic needs are provided. This ensures that the citizens of Insel will have their necessities without worrying or looking for other sources. Besides business being the main feature of Insel, agriculture also plays a very important role in the island on Insel. Because Insel is built in the middle of Kenyir Lake, water the surrounds Insel are half sea water, half river water depending on which side of the island. Agriculture is strongly needed by Insel because it needs to provide food for the island for it to sustain itself. A wide field of plant plantations are located on the south east of the island where land is more fertile for the plants to grow. I got the idea of a business and agricultural town from Al Maryah Island. CHRISTINA NG SUE LI| 0319671 | Mr. Cherng Yih| FNBE APR 2014 | Taylor’s University 8

  • 14. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation CBD-Central Business District. Consists of office buildings, commercial buildings, government buildings (Isnel Parlimen)and etc. it is also the work area for the public. This zone also consists of service apartments, high density residential area and some historical tourist attraction. l to . Industrial Zone This zone is for the water turbines to transform kinetic energy from the waves to electrical energy for the town. Commercial Zone This zone consists of the education/ institutional areas, medical centers, retail shops and shopping malls. Residential Zone There are 3 types of residential zones, which are: 1. High density residential area. Eg: Condominium, apartments, flats and etc. 2. Medium density residential are. Eg: semi-d. 3. Low density residential area. Eg: Bunglos. Water Treatment Zone This zone is specifically for water to be treated here and to be reused back by the town. Water will be recycled therefore less water will be wasted. Park Zones This areas are for small commercial parks that will help maintain a balance ecosystem within the town. Agricultural Zones This zones are for planting plants that will help provide basic needs for the town to sustain itself. The 4 sustainable features (a) Recycle water treatment Water from the houses and buildings will be transported to the water treatment plant. At here, water that is treated will be reused back by the town for domestic uses such as watering the plants and toilet flush. Access water will be the next batch of water that will be treated, filtered and purified to be used for the town’s residence consumption. CHRISTINA NG SUE LI| 0319671 | Mr. Cherng Yih| FNBE APR 2014 | Taylor’s University 14
  • 15. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation This water will be very clean unlike like the other water. Therefore this water will be used for the citizen’s consumption. Water on this island will be reused and recycled constantly thus allowing the island to sustain itself. (b) Crop Rotation Crop rotation is a process in which a certain plant will not be planted on the same area as before. This is to ensure that the soil will not be lacking in certain minerals because different kinds of plants needs different minerals. Crop rotation gives various nutrients to the soil. A traditional element of crop rotation is the replenishment of nitrogen through the use of green manure in sequence with cereals and other crops. Crop rotation also mitigates the build-up of pathogens and pests that often occurs when one species is continuously cropped, and can also improve soil structure and fertility by alternating deep-rooted and shallow-rooted plants. Crop rotation is one component of polyculture. (c) Wave Technology Unlike fossil-fueled power plants, wave and tidal energy facilities generate electricity without producing any pollutant emissions or greenhouse gases. Since the first wave and tidal energy facilities are currently being CHRISTINA NG SUE LI| 0319671 | Mr. Cherng Yih| FNBE APR 2014 | Taylor’s University 15
  • 16. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation deployed, the full environmental impacts of wave and tidal power remain uncertain but are projected to be small. The tidal wave technology is the use of kinetic energy produced from the movement of the waves to spin the turbine that is then converted to electrical energy that will provide electricity to the town. Wave Energy --> Kinetic Energy ---> Electrical Energy. These turbines are located on the East side of the island because the wave current there is stronger, therefore spinning the turbine more, resulting more electrical energy produced. (d) Connecting Bridges There are bridges connecting from the high density residential area to the commercial buildings, close to the Central Business Distrct area. This is to allow residence to get to their work place without driving. This way, its is not only eco friendly but it is also convenient for the residence. The bridges are simple structures connecting 2 buildings. These bridges are also build above the bicycle tracks. This will allow more convenience to street pedestrians and cyclist. Inside these bridges will also be decorated and furnished nicely to provide a more comfortable vibe for the users. This will not only lighten up the vibe of the bridges but will also encourage the citizens to use the bridges. 7. Conclusion From this project, I’ve learnt that when planning a town is not to make it look nice or beautiful, that is just the secondary purpose. The main purpose of this town planning is to put in sustainable features to ensure that the town can sustain and live by itself and not depend on outsiders to support them. Besides that, the sustainable features must also be related to the town. For example, if you put solar panels on a island and compare it to a normal land with solar panels, there is no CHRISTINA NG SUE LI| 0319671 | Mr. Cherng Yih| FNBE APR 2014 | Taylor’s University 16
  • 17. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation difference. Therefore to improve it, we should put tidal wave technology to the island. In this way, the island and the land will have a difference. In conclusion, we need to be smart when come to planning a town. We cannot just simply put in and take out elements from a town. Sustainable features are also important to sustain a town keeping it eco-friendly. 8.
