TELEVISION DRAMA.
ITV1 - Audience
 “We appeal to a broad, heartland
audience”
 Appeals to the mainstreamers and the
resigned
ITV - Origins
 Formed after the television act of 1954
 Passed on the basis that the channel
would regulate the new service and not
follow the same path followed by
American television networks (seen as
vulgar by some)
 Wanted a clear distinction between
television shows and adverts
 Made up of different companies so no one
had the monopoly over adverts.
ITV – Types of
programmes televised
(remit)
 “…hilarious highs or plunge to very
dark areas of human behaviour. But
we will always look for some
element of mainstream appeal and
an accessible way in for our
audience.”
 “We can take our audience to
places they have never been as long
as we don’t alienate them.”
 “An ITV drama is never cynical and
is always entertaining”
 Downton abbey, Broadchurch,
Coronation Street,
E4 - Audience
 Appeal to a niche audience, mostly people
in schools, colleges and universities by
airing relatable programmes to young
adult life
 Main demographic is under 18’s. also
appeal to 18-24 yr.olds
 Appeal to both males and females. Mainly
females from the types of drama (comedy
drama, romantic drama)
 They appeal to the mainstreamers and
the strugglers
E4 - Origins
 Began as a bonus subscription channel
with the main channel, Channel 4.
 Because of its large popularity became
part of the Freeview channels to attract a
larger audience.
 It was also part of the Sky satellite
package.
E4 – Types of
programmes televised
(remit)
 Usually broadcasts drama with
a majorly teen cast, set in
Britain, follows ordinary lives
of these teens and the
problems they face. (Skins,
My Mad, Fat Diary)
 The channel aims to stimulate
debate, share alternative
views and show cultural
diversity within Britain.
Sky Living - Audience
 Sky living mainly aim their programming
at a female audience around the age of 35
and younger
 They appeal to a wide audience with a
focus on action and “real-life”
 Their psychographics would primarily
appeal to the mainstreamers and the
aspirers
Sky Living - Origins
 Sky Living, used to be UK Living, began
broadcasting September 1st 1993
 It was originally owned by a three-way
partnership, ITV being the main
contributor
 The channel was originally aimed a
women between 25-45
 Sky then bought the rights and rebranded
it Sky Living in early 2011
Sky Living – Types of
televised programmes
(remit)
 Sky Living’s main programming
is drama television shows,
mostly from America
 The main subjects of drama
they focus on is action and they
mostly deal in two types of
drama shows, medical or police
authority (Criminal minds or
Grey’s Anatomy)
 The programming usually
focuses on ordinary people
doing extraordinary jobs

  • 2. ITV1 - Audience  “We appeal to a broad, heartland audience”  Appeals to the mainstreamers and the resigned
  • 3. ITV - Origins  Formed after the television act of 1954  Passed on the basis that the channel would regulate the new service and not follow the same path followed by American television networks (seen as vulgar by some)  Wanted a clear distinction between television shows and adverts  Made up of different companies so no one had the monopoly over adverts.

E4 - Audience  Appeal to a niche audience, mostly people in schools, colleges and universities by airing relatable programmes to young adult life  Main demographic is under 18’s. also appeal to 18-24 yr.olds  Appeal to both males and females. Mainly females from the types of drama (comedy drama, romantic drama)  They appeal to the mainstreamers and the strugglers
  • 6. E4 - Origins  Began as a bonus subscription channel with the main channel, Channel 4.  Because of its large popularity became part of the Freeview channels to attract a larger audience.  It was also part of the Sky satellite package.
  • 7. E4 – Types of programmes televised (remit)  Usually broadcasts drama with a majorly teen cast, set in Britain, follows ordinary lives of these teens and the problems they face. (Skins, My Mad, Fat Diary)  The channel aims to stimulate debate, share alternative views and show cultural diversity within Britain.
  • 8. Sky Living - Audience  Sky living mainly aim their programming at a female audience around the age of 35 and younger  They appeal to a wide audience with a focus on action and “real-life”  Their psychographics would primarily appeal to the mainstreamers and the aspirers

Sky Living - Origins  Sky Living, used to be UK Living, began broadcasting September 1st 1993  It was originally owned by a three-way partnership, ITV being the main contributor  The channel was originally aimed a women between 25-45  Sky then bought the rights and rebranded it Sky Living in early 2011

Sky Living – Types of televised programmes (remit)  Sky Living’s main programming is drama television shows, mostly from America  The main subjects of drama they focus on is action and they mostly deal in two types of drama shows, medical or police authority (Criminal minds or Grey’s Anatomy)  The programming usually focuses on ordinary people doing extraordinary jobs
