1. How does your media product
represent certain social groups
Chloe Bailey
2. Conventions
• My genre is psychological horror, this consists of two main characters an
antagonist who is the intimidating character and the protagonist who is
the victim and is usually in danger. The psychological element is usually
played out on screen with the protagonist being hurt.
3. Representation Of Gender And Age
• Antagonist – stereotypically male and an adult of 25+ years old. He is
usually intimidating and scary because he is older the most of the other
characters in the film and therefore has a sense of more power.
• Protagonist – conventionally female and younger than the
antagonist, usually a teenager. They are terrified of the antagonist because
he has more power than a young, vulnerable female.
• Under 16
Young and helpless, normally not featured as main characters in horror
films because they are too young.
4. Representation Of Gender And Age
• Teenagers 16-19
Often used as the protagonist in horror films. They are vulnerable and
naïve to dangerous situations. They are used mainly if the target audience
is teenagers so they can relate to the film more.
• Adults 20 – 60
Males are usually the antagonist, however some films subvert the
stereotype and use females. They are strong, powerful and intimidating.
They have a higher social status than teenagers and are often used in
horror films to make it tense and scary.
5. Antagonist
The antagonist in when a stranger
calls, represents the horror genre
well and has some similarities and
differences to my antagonist. They
are both older than the
protagonist, suggesting they have
more power. They are also both male
and this is stereotypically the gender
of the antagonist. The differences are
that he is wearing dark clothes from
what I can see and the antagonist in
my film is wearing red and simple
colours.
6. Protagonist
When a stranger calls’ protagonist
is a young female, who is very
vulnerable. She leads a normal
life and is dressed in simple
clothes. The protagonist In my
film shares similar qualities to
her, although there are some
differences, for example she is
being followed where as my
character has already been
captured.
7. Conclusion
I believe I have followed the conventions of social groups in
horror films and also have made comparisons between my
protagonist and antagonist to other characters in horror films.
I have followed stereotypes for the protagonist and antagonist
for age, gender, clothing, role in the film, power and
emotions.
