1. NIGHTINGALE’S ENVIRONMENTAL THEORY

2. Florence Nightingale the founder of modern nursing of
professional nursing, was born in Florence, Italy, on 12
May 1820, in an English family; she was named of the
city of her birth. Florence learned mathematics,
language, philosophy and religion
Florence in 1860 established nightingale nursing
school as the first nursing school in the world With the
establishment of this school, she changed nursing to a
respectful profession.

3. • Florence Nightingale (1820–1910), considered
the founder of educated and scientific nursing
and widely known as "The Lady with the Lamp",
wrote the first nursing notes that became the basis
of nursing practice and research. The notes,
entitled Notes on Nursing (1860), Nightingale is
considered the first nursing theorist. One of her
theories was the Environmental Theory, which
incorporated the restoration of the usual health
status of the nurse's clients into the delivery of
health care—it is still practiced today.

4. MAJOR CONCEPTS
PERSON :-
Person is the recipient of nursing care, People
are multidimensional, composed of biological,
psychological, social and spiritual components.
ENVIRONMENT:-
Environment can be external as well as internal,
poor or difficult leads to poor heath and disease.

5. • HEALTH:-
Health is “not only to be well but
maintaining well being by using a person’s
power to the fullest extend”
Health is maintained by controlling the
environmental factors to prevent disease.
Disease is considered as dys-ease or the
absence of disease

6. • NURSING:-
Nursing "is an act of utilizing
the environment of the patient to assist
him in his recovery" (Nightingale
1860/1969)

8. • HEALTH OF THE HOUSING :-
The importance of the health of
the house as being closely related to
presence of the pure air , pure water
,efficient drainage , cleanliness and
light.

9. • Ventilation and warming :-
Nurse has to keep the air he breathes
as pure as the external air without
chilling him/her
Pure Water :-
well water of a very impure kind is used for
domestic purposes. And when epidemic
disease shows itself, persons using such
water are almost sure to suffer."

10. • LIGHT:-
“The usefulness of light in treating disease
is very important” (especially direct
sunlight).
CLEANLINESS:-
The greater part of nursing consists in
preserving cleanliness “ Assess the room
for dampness, darkness , and dust”

11. • CHATTERING HOPES AND ADVICES :-
Avoidances of talking without
reason or giving advices that is without
fact . Continues to talk to the client as a
person and to stimulates the client’s
mind.
VARIETY:-
Provide variety in the patient room to
help him/her avoid boredom and
depression.

12. NOISE :-
Avoidance of sudden / stratling
noises . Nurses responsibility is to
assess and stop different kind of noise.
NUTRITION :-
Variety of food presented to the
patients and discussed the importance
of food presented.

13. • BED AND BEDDING:-
She started that dirty carpets and
walls containing large quantities of
organic matter and provided ready
source of infection , just as dirty sheets
and bed did.
