They say that international relocation is the third most traumatic experience in life right after divorce and death. Leaving behind elements that you are familiar with, your friends, family, career, language, your GP can indeed be traumatic! For accompanying spouses/partners, following your principal spouse on international assignment often leads to identity crisis, especially when a good job is left behind-give yourself time to mourn this loss but do not linger in misery for too long. Being a professional on the upward career ladder to a home-maker can be a daunting and even hostile shift. But by crafting a portable career, you can alleviate some of the potential angst and help yourself cope with the career transition. Check out my presentation for ideas on how to manage your career as a job seeking spouses/partner. I look forward to your comments and hear about your own experience as a job seeking spouse/partner in a foreign country.
