3. INTRODUCTION
Edusat is a communication satellite
It is also known as GSAT-3
It was launched on 20th Sep 2004 from Satish Dhawan space centre Sriharikota
It was planned for 7 years
It was deactivated on 30th sep 2010.
It is a collaborative project of the MHRD, IGNOU
& the ISRO.
Edusat is a combination of two words ( Education & Satellite)
In a broader sense it means education through satellite.
3
5. WHERE WAS IT LAUNCHED
It was launched into geo stationary transfer
orbit ( GTO)
It is an elliptical orbit
The orbit is 36,000Km high from earth.
After 17 Min flight the satellite weighing 1950kg was successfully placed into a
geo transfer orbit at a height of 180 km above the earth
5
7. FEATURES OF EDUSAT
First full fledged educational satellite.
First satellite to serve in education sector.
Can cover whole geography of India.
To meet the demand for an interactive satellite based distance education
Primarily for providing connectivity to school, college & Higher level education &
also support the informal education
7
8. TYPES OF EDUSAT
Edusat facility can be set up in 2 ways
ROT – Receive only terminal- one way video & one way audio
SIT- Satellite interactive terminal, one way video & 2 way audio
8
9. HOW EDUSAT WORKS
In its orbit it carries-
1 KU band transponders & 6 Extended C-band transponders
The transponders are dedicated to specific regions of India
KU band is the micro wave frequency used for satellite communication
9
11. FUNCTIONS
It covers all the geographical areas inside the country
It can provide interactive & cost effective education
It can provide consistency to information
The spot beams used in the EDUSAT are more powerful & signals can be received
with a smaller satellite dish
It is a satellite fully dedicated to the cause of education
It is useful to implement virtual class rooms in remote & rural schools
The teacher at the transmission end virtually becomes available to all the virtual
class rooms at the receiving end.
This process can help in over coming shortage of trained teachers.
11
12. It can provide audio visual medium & interactive multi media facility
It can open up many possibilities like online teachings, video conferencing etc
It can be used at all levels of education, from primary schools to professional
courses
It can provide live lecture sessions frothe best & expert teachers
It can facilitate provision of equality in educational opportunity
Before establishing EDUSAT quality classes & classes Handled by experts benefitted
only urban students,
With the working of the EDUSAT rural students can also enjoy its benefits
EDUSAT has enhanced distance education in the country, especially in medical,
technical & Higher education streams.
The project will be run by the ISRO & IGNOU the former providing technical
infrastructure & the later developing courses & training teachers
Students will get the facility to see what they read in their text books & to do
experiments with the help of multimedia technologies
12
14. ADVANTAGES
Distance education will get strengthened
Education could be made available at a fraction of its cost to a large no of students
It eliminates the demand of huge no of teachers
Education reaches the door steps of students as there is no need for students to go
in search of good education
14
15. LIMITATIONS
Proper infrastructure & internet facilities are not yet available everywhere
Lack of efficient instructors
Lack of electricity in remote areas
This system is very Expensive
15
16. CONCLUSION
The launch of EDUSAT has helped in providing excellent education through video
programmes to students
The students have benefitted a lot from the delivered videos through EDUSAT
It has helped the learners to strengthen their knowledge by under standing the
proper contents through distance education
