Special Places In El Salvador
We have all visited a place that has impacted our lives in a good way or in a bad way. Many have
memories from their childhood home, while others have unforgettable memories from a trip they did
to the beach. All of our experiences are different because they impact us in different ways. For me a
special place that I visited that is very memorable to me is Los Planes de Renderos which is a city in
El Salvador. Los Planes De Renderos in El Salvador is a memorable place to me because I got to
experience the beautiful city with my family , It's where I got to try my favorite food which are
pupusas directly from where they originally come from, and because I got to experience the
celebration of independence day in El Salvador.

Los Planes De Renderos is known for their amazing restaurants which sell salvadorian authentic
food. Since we were there, it was a must to try El Salvadors traditional food , pupusas. Pupusas are
stuffed corncakes with anything you want and it comes with tomato sauce and curtido which is
cabbage with other vegetables which is infused with vinegar. First, we went to this popular
restaurant which is known for making "the best pupusas". I ordered 3 pupusas one cheese and 2
beans with cheese, when they were brought to me I expected small but normal pupusas like I'm used
to, but in front of me were 3 large pupusas the size of a plate. Shortly after the waiters which were
uniformed in white button up shirts and blue ties, brought us the sauce and curtido. The sauce was a
bright red color and had a smooth liquidy consistency while the curtido was a bright orange color.
The smell was a little bit different from the ones that I eat at home, It had a very good cheese smell
and the tomato sauce and curtido all combined which created an authentic smell. The whole
restaurant was filled with this smell, it was amazing. I took a piece of my pupusa and added the
sauce and curtido , the taste was like an explosion in my mouth, the cheese was gooey and the
cabbage had a good crunch everything had the perfect texture and combined deliciously. While
enjoying my pupusas, the restaurant had music playing in the background and there was laughter
and the sound of kids playing and people taking picture, all of this made the environment perfect.
Finally, after I was done eating we explored the restaurant. This restaurant was big it had 2 stories
and it was painted blue. The workers there all attended us with a smile , but you can see the
exhaustion in their face because of all the walking they

Geography : El Salvador 's Geography
Geography:
El Salvador 's geography is very diverse, most of the land is plains and flat land but it is bordered by
a chain of mountains. El Salvador is "known as the Land of Volcanoes, it has frequent earthquakes
and volcanic activity. It is the only country in Central America that does not have a coastline on the
Caribbean Sea," (National Geographic). There are about 20 active volcanoes surrounding El
Salvador, it is located on The Ring of Fire. There are two mountain ranges that circle around El
Salvador. The northern mountain ranges, the Sierra Madre, form a chain along the border with
Honduras and the southern mountain ranges are a discontinuous chain of more than twenty
volcanoes. The central plain covers only 25 percent of the land ... Show more content on

national and international campaigns, social and environmental justice movements, and
democratization and citizenship that is focusing on the same goals, to advocate strategically around
public policy, in alliance with other national and international networks, with the aim of achieving
necessary structural changes; and they want to advocate relationships built on equality, honor, and

One of the many pressing Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is zero hunger which aims to end
hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2030. Hunger has struck so many lives throughout the
world, but the struggle with hunger has progressed considerably over the past fifteen years(UN

Empanadas In El Salvador
El Salvador is a tropical country with unnumbered delicious fruits. Everywhere you go you will find
plantain trees. Plantain trees are super popular in El Salvador. Salvadorans do not only use the
plantains produced by this exotic tree for empanadas but they use the leaves of the tree for wrapping
the famous tamales. My culture item is empanada but these empanadas are different. The empanada
crust is made from the ripe plantains. In order to make the crust, the plantains must be ripe because
that way it will taste sweeter. People in El Salvador smash the ripe plantains to make it into a dough.
The empanada has a sweet milky cream inside. The milky cream is a mixture of milk and
cornstarch. If you don't like the milky cream you will find empanadas

The Government Of El Salvador
Unidos por la Solidaridad
The government of El Salvador has also created a similar program to Mexico's Tres por Uno called
Unidos por la Solidaridad (Unity for Solidarity) (Orozco and Rouse, 2007). This program was
launched in 2001 is managed by El Fondo de Inversión Social para el Desarrollo Local de El
Salvador (FISDL), a national agency whose goal is to promote local development and reduce
poverty in El Salvador (Orozco and Rouse, 2007). Unidos por la Solidaridad collaborates alongside
Salvadoran hometown associations, NGO's, and other private organizations that help fund local
projects to develop social infrastructure in poor communities (Orozco and Rouse, 2007; Terry, 2005
). Although this is a smaller and fairly new program when compared to Mexico's Tres por Uno it has
created over 500 projects in El Salvador, involving infrastructure, recreation, and health (Orozco and
Rouse, 2007; Terry, 2005 ).. The total contribution of hometown associations (through remittances)
has been over $2.1 million and continues to grow (Programa Unidos Por La Solidaridad; Terry, 2005
). This program has too seen positive results in the community such as strengthening of the social
capital at a local level, greater human and economic development along with more successful
redirections of remittances. However, like other governmental projects it has some flaws such as
government transparency, and limited resources (Programa Unidos Por La Solidaridad. Nonetheless

Violence : El Salvador 's Violence
Violence in El Salvador El Salvador is a country known for its beautiful beaches, mountainous
landscape, and coffee export. Unfortunately, this perfect picture is only a wall that hides the true
violence that occurs in the country. El Salvador's violence is an ongoing cycle, so how does today's
violence differ and compare from the violence in the 1980's? The differences and similarities of
violence in El Salvador from now and then involve root cause, political involvement, and economic
issues.
Today's violence in El Salvador consists of ruthless gang members. According to CRS
(Congressional Research Service) about 30,000 kids have joined the maras and it will continue to
increase. Due to the gang violence, children are fleeing the country to prevent from becoming
victims or recruited, furthermore families are streaming into the U.S to seek asylum. Alike today, El
Salvador experienced the same immigration crisis back in 1980 when the civil war was the cause for
Salvadorans to immigrate to the United Sates. Repression and violation of human rights was the root
cause, now gang violence is the root cause striking a similar pattern of the effects of violence. In
1980, El Salvador's right–wing government had death squads to kill citizens for suspicion of
supporting a social reform. Military soldiers attacked many villages, including El Mozote in which
men, women, and children were tortured and subjected to sexual violence.
In contrast, the violence Salvadorans face today is not

El Salvador And The Civil War
El Salvador is a small, Central American, Hispanic speaking country, which borders with Honduras,
Guatemala and the Pacific Ocean and has currently a population of 6.4 million. In the late 1880s
coffee was the major export product and it became 95% of the country's income. This wealth
although was unequally distributed and as a result it was concentrated only on the 2% of the
population. As a result poverty grew and the conflict between the poor and the rich became a big
problem El Salvador had to deal with during the 20th century. A Central American Socialist Party
was born and lead people against the government and in response the government of El Salvador at
the time supported military death teams who killed anyone who supported that party.
In 1980 El Salvador's civil war officially began. Thousands of people were kidnapped and killed.
Church workers were abducted, raped and killed, yet again the peace talks did not begin until 1984
and the Peace Accords of El Salvador was not signed until 1992. Between those twelve years 75,000
people died as a result of the civil war and most of these people were completely innocent.
Since 1992 the El Salvadorian economy has been trying to recover from a bitter war that left many
wounds open. Between 1991 and 2002 poverty levels in the country declined significantly and many
social advances were seen as school enrolment and access to health and water services increased.
Therefore someone can assume that since the traumatic civil

El Salvador 's Impact On The United States
The area that is currently El Salvador was originally comprised of 3 vast indigenous states and
various territories. The Pipils, indigenous occupants who settled in present day Mexico, are a
nomadic people that originated from Nahua. The Lencas settled and represented the eastern district
while the Mayan the Chortis occupied the North zone of the Lempa Hi River.
In 1524, Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado neglected to seize area in light of the Pipil
warriors. Be that as it may, in 1525 he returned and effectively vanquished the nation and named it
El Salvador which English translation means, "The Savior". In 1811, the longings for freedom
reverberated throughout the country, yet was quickly pounded by the troops sent by neighboring
country Guatemala. In 1821, El Salvador and other Central American nations declared independence
from Spain and were joined to Mexico the following year, however El Salvador opposed the union.
The nation turned into an autonomous republic in 1838 after the Central American coalition
separated.
Geology
El Salvador is the least expansive nation in Central America and is no bigger than the state of
Massachusetts. This precipitous nation is flanked by the Pacific Ocean, Guatemala, and Honduras.

The twelve–year civil war in El Salvador displaced thousands from their homeland leading many to
flee as refugees and from political persecution to neighboring countries like the United States. Today
an estimated quarter of the Salvadoran population are living outside the country's borders (Perla,
2009). Although Salvadorans in the United States have gone from a refugee population, it is evident
that the long–term effects from the civil war are still present today. Today's higher education system
has yet to address those long–term effects by failing to understand the Salvadoran experience.

Salvadoran Refugee Experience
During the 1980's, the country's civil war caused thousands of Salvadorans to flee their homeland in
search of a more politically stable country (Menjivar, 2000). Ironically, despite the signing of the
Peace Accords that ended the war almost two and a half decades ago, today thousands of
Salvadorans still continue to seek safety and refuge in the U.S. and in other countries (Menjivar,
2000)
Historically, migration has played a key role in Salvadoran history yet events during the late 20th
century increased the number of people emigrating out of El Salvador. In an attempt to escape the
violence and repression caused by the civil war, thousands of Salvadorans fled to other countries
where many ended up in refugee camps.(Menjivar, 2000) From the late 1970s onward, migration
trends within and from El Salvador changed drastically. People became displaced after fleeing from
conflict areas; "some fled to adjacent regions such as Honduras or Guatemala, and others crossed
two international borders (to Mexico) or three (to the United States)" (Menjivar, 2000). Migration to
the United States continued to increase drastically from the 1960s to 1980s. During the 1980's
thousands of Salvadorans fled in hopes of escaping the violence and repression caused by the civil
war. Beth Baker–Cristales (2004) explains how the civil war displaced thousands of Salvadorans,
many who were sent to refugee camps in

Southern California Vs. El Salvador
I wake up to the warmth of the sun touching my skin; I can hear the birds chirping outside calling
my name to get ready and start the day. I get out of bed just to be attacked by two furry blurs trying
to lick my face and showing me how much they love me. I know that I have a long day ahead of me
but I have no idea what I should do. I could go to the beach and feel the soft sand in between my
toes or go to a store and prepare a nice dinner for myself. So much time in a day, but I don't have a
clue on how to spend it. These are the types of decisions I need to make on a daily basis. I go
outside and take in the beauty of my surroundings. Everything seems so perfect, so beautiful, as if it
was supposed to look that way. El Salvador is a wonderful place, full of wonderful people, and
amazing scenery and there is no place I would rather be at the moment. Living in California is
wonderful, but it doesn't give me the culture that I am looking for. El Salvador is like my home,
somewhere where I can visit once in a while, but my real home is California where I will always
want to live. Although El Salvador and California share some similarities like the settings, there are
some traits like foods, culture, and the people that make them special in their own way.
One of the common differences between El Salvador and Southern California is the food. Carl's Jr
and In–N–Out are two of the most beloved fast food restaurants that have won people's hearts and
taste buds. For people who live

It is known for its Pacific ocean beaches, surf spots and mountainous landscape. It is named "the
savior" and is the largest coffee exporters in the world. In fact, it is the only country in Central

country in South America, and this is the country I will be traveling to. El Salvador is the most
misunderstood country of them all. Some people say that it is quite dangerous while others say it's
quite boring compared to the rest of Central America. Most visitors say El Salvador is not safe and
this is because the lack of mass tourism equals lack of information. This is the reason I chose El
Salvador to travel to. This vibrant nation is very tropical with rich forests and fertile farmlands.
From Volcanoes and crater lakes to surfing and Wildlife, it's filled to the top with so many things to

Environmental Problems in El Salvador
With a total land mass of just 8,124 square miles, El Salvador is the smallest country in Central
America. Like many of its' neighboring countries, it possesses very few natural resources. Since the
nation's economy is based predominantly on agriculture, it's no surprise that its' citizens often
experience "resource roller coasters". In addition, its' long history of inappropriate land tenure and
ownership practices date all the way back to colonialism. Even more strikingly, "sixty percent of El
Salvador's population is expected to live in the capital by 2010." As a result, El Salvador has to deal
with continuing environmental problems. The fact that the nation lies along the Pacific Ring of fire
doesn't help either, which subjects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite receiving six feet of rainfall each year, most of the nation's water is highly contaminated. In
fact, thousands are killed each year due to water contamination, many of whom are children. At the
same time, most of the citizens of the nation cannot afford bottled water. After the twelve year civil
war destroyed much of the country's infrastructure, poor areas became even poorer. Homes and
water sources had been destroyed by militia during the war. After returning home, some citizens
chose to hand dig wells in order to obtain drinking water. However, many others went to their
nearest stream, river or pond to collect water. These unsafe and contaminated water sources caused
many people to become ill with intestinal diseases. According to Ricardo Navarro, El Salvador's
government has failed to protect its' most precious resource: "Farmers have cut down forests that
used to store rain water. Ranchers have allowed their livestock to pollute rivers. Communities have
put latrines too close to shallow wells." Others, such as Marisol Prima Ponza, who runs a
government dispensary that tracks the health of 375 children in several communities, believe that
things are improving. "There have been fewer cases of diarrhea," she says. "For example, from
January to August of this year I have only recorded 17 cases." Ponza also added that these
improvements are due to several projects that

Ph 1: Describe the specific geographic location and some statistics regarding El Salvador:
El Salvador gained its independence in 1821 (C). El Salvador is located in Central America, north of
the Panama Canal and south of Mexico. El Salvador shares a border with Honduras to the north and
east and with the Pacific Ocean to the south, and Guatemala to the northwest (C). El Salvador's
territory is located entirely on the Pacific Ocean side of Central America, making it the only Central
American country that does not have a Caribbean shoreline, unlike Guatemala, Honduras,
Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in
Central America and is known as the Land of Volcanoes (C). Just to give some perspective on the
size of El Salvador, it is approximately the same size as Massachusetts (C). El Salvador is similarly
located on the Ring of Fire, a string of volcanoes located around the edges of the Pacific Ocean
which cause seismic activity, as well as earthquakes. Not unlike other countries in the region, El

Gangs Of El Salvador Analysis
Gangs of El Salvador
In the documentary, Gangs of El Salvador by Vice News, the viewer gets an insider's perspective of
the gang activity in El Salvador. The two gangs that were talked about in this documentary was the
notorious MS–13 and 18th street gang. This documentary was made to inform people that there is a
serious gang problem not only in the United States, but in other parts of the world as well.
Furthermore, I will discuss the Gangs of El Salvador, current issues regarding gangs, and how the
country of El Salvador is combating the gang issue.
According to the United States Federal Government and the Department of Justice, the definition of
a gang is an association of three or more individuals, whose members collectively identify
themselves by adopting a group identity. In addition, it then describes the ways that gangs can
identify themselves by tattoos, hand signs, a common name, slogan, and graffiti. On the other hand,
the definition then goes into saying that the group's focus is to implement fear, engage in criminal
activity, and intimidate others. If we look into the history of MS–13 and 18th street gang, we can see
that the refugees had a tough time assimilating into the American culture in the 1980s when they
came over from El Salvador to Los Angeles. With ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

is only going to antagonize the gang members and aggravate them and make them want to kill cops.

members and try to educate the population, so that the youth don't resort to joining

El Salvador Civil War Effects
There has been many long term effects from the civil war in El Salvador. The war lasted about 12
years from 1980 to 1992, and El salvador is still dealing with old issues from that time. It was the
darkest times in El Salvador's history. The inequality of social classes, poverty, and military rule led
Salvadorians to revolt against their own government.
In 1932, the Central American Socialist Party was created in El salvador. The peasants revolted
against this with riots. Within a few weeks, the revolt died after the military killed around 30,000
civilians, most people killed were indigenous. Some people were killed just for looking as if they
supported the uprising. This massacre is know as the Matanza.
The salvadoran military ruled for decades until finally the death of an archbishop Oscar Romero was
assassinated during mass in 1980, which fueled political violence and led to the civil war. To make
matters worse, at Oscar Romero's funeral, many came to mourn and were attacked by snipers on the
roofs, killing 42 and wounding 200. In December 1980, four American nuns were killed by the
military even though they framed 5 salvdorans, 4:5 spoke out and told the press they were ordered to
by the Salvadoran military. The United States president, Jimmy Carter, reacted by cutting off aid to

Through globalization, a country obtains the opportunity to have a diversity of cultures. ""In a flat
world, where value is increasingly created, and complex problems solve, by whom you connect with
horizontally, having a high trust society is even more of an advantage. 'Having an abundance of trust
is essential in a world of collaboration' added Seidman, 'because the more people trust each other, or
their leaders, the more likely they are going to work well together'" (Friedman, The World Is Flat: A
Brief History of The Twenty–First Century 334–335). Friedman emphasizes the idea that
collaborating with each other creates an environment of trust, an environment of connections that
become helpful when adversities are shown in a country's path. Additionally, Friedman brings the
fact that the world has become a tiny world. "And while the dynamic force in Globalization 1.0 was
countries globalizing and the dynamic force in Globalization 2.0 was companies globalizing, the
dynamic force in Globalization 3.0–the force that gives it its unique character–is the newfound
power for individuals to collaborate and compete globally" (Friedman, The World Is Flat: A Brief

Gang Violence In El Salvador
Over the years, Salvadoran citizens have been experiencing a rise in homicides in their

police brutality, and even a declining economy, which is basically everything that can go wrong in a

Given these circumstances, El Salvador's economy was largely shaped by the Guatemalan elite.
Although, Guatemala had size and power, El Salvador was able to resist takeovers but it left them
tough and often violent, leaving the perfect atmosphere to foster El Salvador's gangs. Likewise, El
Salvador has also had a history of violence because of the Salvadoran Civil War that lasted from
1979 to 1992. This civil war took the lives of approximately 80,000 soldiers and civilians in El
Salvador (Wood, 1). The Civil War separated families as some were granted temporary protection in
the United States during the war, and while others lived as undocumented migrants. Once the war
ended, many migrants were sent back to El Salvador where conditions were not good. With a
government recovering from a war, gangs saw an opportunity to build and start battling for territory.

occurring in the country. Furthermore, the many wars and political revolts in El Salvador impeded
its economic and social growth. The main focus of the Oligarchy was to turn a profit. And because
they essentially ran the economy, they assumed that their actions were best for both their profits and
the country's economy as a whole. Their selfish single–minded focus led to a growing economic

However, the Indians were susceptible to the diseases brought over by the Spaniards, which led to a
decline in the Indian population. Because the Oligarchy viewed the Indians as disposable labor, they
did not feel the need to treat them to prevent their numbers from dwindling. Instead, the Spanish
replaced them with slaves imported from Africa (Montgomery 71). This was one of the first signs of
inequality brought to El Salvador by the Oligarchy. In the seventeenth century, the demand for cacao
dropped. As a result of this, El Salvador plunged into an economic depression, and the Oligarchy
had to find a new source of revenue, which they found in indigo (Montgomery 71). Indigo was
profitable because of the increase in demand for textiles in Europe at this time (Krauss 59–60). This
led the Oligarchy to increase its acquisition of land in El Salvador, which was mainly inhabited by
the native Indians. On top of being extremely lucrative, indigo was far less labor–intensive than
cacao was, so it became the main focus of El Salvador's agriculture by 1600 (Montgomery 71).
Unfortunately, these developments had high costs for the Indian populations. When the indigo
rotted, diseases would be brought to the Indian villages that cultivated it, killing off entire villages in
several instances. When this happened, they were merely replaced by another tribe (Krauss 60).
Eventually the mistreatment of the Indians by the

Examples Of Injustice In El Salvador
This movie exemplifies much injustice that happens within El Salvador. It is shown how it is very
hard to find a separation between church and state. This is hard because their Government is killing
their own people, not only that, but they are hiring people to kill the people so that it doesn't seem as
if the government is against the people. As the Guerillas are for the people, they do many things that
are against the Government such as killing government leaders and the rich. As Romero is the
Archbishop, his faith challenges him to practice the virtues of prudence, justice, and fortitude. The
Virtue of prudence is "being cautious or weary" (98). Being prudent "inclines people to see lightly
and translate our seeing into rightful actions" (Madison, 98). Prudence is demonstrated in the scene
is how Romero acted after he found out about the killing of Father Grande. When he saw father
Grande, Romero didn't lash out, he grieved and found peace. This propelled him to act and find
ways that the church could be a safe haven for the people. Priests were in a difficult position as to
who to side with, but he chose to side with the poor so that he could be a face of hope for them. ...

Romero demonstrates, justice, "suum cuique which means to each his due, an act gives another what
they deserve" (Mattison,141). The way he is practicing this virtue is, Romero, fighting for the
people because he is working with the people against the government. As Romero is watching the
government go against the people he realizes that he needs something to do. He takes it upon
himself to Baptize all people without distinction at the same place, to unite the people. He tells the
people to stop killing each other because it causes more injustice, instead of bringing the people

El Salvador, meaning "The Savior" in Spanish, is a small Central American nation, mostly known
for its beaches near the Pacific Ocean. This place is home to over six million people whose spoken

Although we hear, little about El Salvador and the people there, they seem to be going through quite
the struggle. El Salvador have a democratic government, who are trying to expand job opportunities
for the people of El Salvador. Although they have shown success in trying to do so they still face
major challenges such as high crime rate, natural disasters, etc. Not only do they face high crime

The Republic of El Salvador's geography has had a strong impact on its history and politics. Its hilly

United States wanted to democratize the government and knew the pros and cons of this governing

The History Of El Salvador
The history of El Salvador begins with the time period in which indigenous peoples resided in the
country. According to Roy Poland, in Culture and Customs of El Salvador, El Salvador was
conquered by the Spanish in 1524; the spanish found the country was divided into three states (13).
The spaniards hegemonic influence finally converted El Salvador into a Spanish colony after twenty
six years of indigenous resistance(Poland 14). Such conquest brought violence, diseases, and
poverty to the indigenous people. The invasion of El Salvador by the Spanish also resulted in
mestizaje, racial mixing. The colonial period lasted until 1821(Poland 14). El Salvador finally
became independent from Spain in 1821 and joined the United Provinces of Central America in
1823; however, in 1840 El Salvador gained full independence (Eileen Garron Batres 6), One of the
most important crops in El Salvador during the 1800's and 1900's was coffee; during the 1900's El
Salvador was the third largest coffee producer internationally (Susan B. Hecht).
After colonization–"La Matanza" Twentieth century El Salvador is made up of violence, suffering,
and hardships. After the independence of El Salvador, the elite took control of this country which
produced discontent amongst the lower classes. During the 1920's this discontent grew because of
political abuse and increased poverty. According to John Chasteen in Born In Blood and Fire,

Growing the Small Country of El Salvador
El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America; most of the country is on a fertile volcanic
plateau about 2,000 ft high. The people of El Salvador use the land for raising crops, building cities,
and are very skillful weavers. El Salvador remained a Spanish colony for around 300 years. It was
taken over by Europeans in the 1500's. Before the Spanish conquest, which was an invasion from
the Spaniards to the native people; one of the earliest groups of settlers was a group of indigenous
people called the Pipil people. (World Book E6 252). El Salvador is a democratic republic whose
constitution was adopted in 1983. It has executive, judicial, and legislative government branches.
They have a president, and he/she cannot serve more than two terms. The president has the
executive power, when he is elected he is in office for five years. The Legislative single–chamber
Assembly has 84 members who are elected by popular vote. El Salvador is also divided into 14
administrative departments and their armed forces have 15,500 active members, and their National
Civilian Police has about 12,000 members. (World Book E6 248–249). The average Salvadoran
usually focuses on soccer and basketball. On every Sunday and occasional holidays, the people
crowd into the National Stadium/Gymnasium in the capitol to cheer and root for the team of their
choice. Baseball has also grown in popularity and many schools now have their own teams. (Land

Materialism In El Salvador
El Salvador is a modest country in Central America. It is the smallest nation in the region but the
most densely populated (Flemion). This small nation has endured many tribulations throughout its
history. There has been an incessant amount of political and economic unreliability due to the stark
inequality experienced by the working–class majority (Flemion). This bellicosity has been
distinguished through unrelenting revolts, coups, and finally, through the culmination of the
Salvadoran Civil War. This rich history filled with great friction and animosity truly displays many
core principles of Historical Materialism, which is simply characterized as the theory that economic
affairs account for non–economic experiences. The history of El Salvador ... Show more content on

The Spanish established plantations throughout El Salvador in order to exploit its only resource.
However, there was great competition for land since El Salvador's size was very restricted. Such
competition for land and production greatly influenced El Salvador's society and economy. At the
start of the eighteenth century however, Salvadorans pushed towards independence from the Spanish
crown. They had hopes for liberation and the long held desire for equality and opportunity to
recuperate as a nation advocating for unity which are ideologies characterized by liberalism.
Although independence from the crown seemed promising, little did the oppressed know all these
expectations would crumble due to the maintained stratification held in the country. After the
independence the inheritance of the Spanish family's ancestors was still in effect. Agriculture was
still as strong as ever as it was needed for sustenance. Following the revolution from Spain most of
the land divisions were still apportioned to the same Salvadoran families that held it during the
conquest. After the independence these families were considered the new appointed elite. As a
result, this led to the perpetuance of inequality and abuse between the elite few and the

When we think of culture, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Many of us begin to envision
how certain people or countries carry themselves in their daily routines. Whether it is in the way
they cook, dress, celebrate certain holidays, or just other beliefs in general. Picture a country that at
one–point war was so bad and constant that is was normal for women to cook for soldiers who are
passing by their homes. It isn't frowned upon to have a corrupted government because that is
something they have had to deal with since their independence, and children as young as the age of

Throughout 1939–1971, El Salvador was run by a military–style dictatorship, causing those who
had land and wealth to be stripped from them just because they could. According to Encyclopedia

who forced the Salvadorian Communist Party (2017). Proving to be a catalyst for conflicts for years

countries that continue to invade, or their most recent civil war that took over 12 years to resolve
and their present war with gangs. My family was unfortunate to be personally affected by the 12–

children, sow, and cook. Other women chose to arm themselves and become militants as well. It

El Salvador 's Economic Freedom
El Salvador, located in Central America between Honduras and Guatemala, gained its independence
from Spain in 1821, but El Salvador has recently suffered a devastating amount of loss due to a 12–
year long civil war. The civil war finally ended in 1992, but the effects of the civil war can still be
felt today. El Salvador is one of the poorest developing nations in the world. According to the 2014
Index of Economic Freedom, El Salvador ranks 59th out of 186 countries based on 10 freedoms.
When ranking countries, the Index of Economic Freedom considers the rule of law, government
size, regulatory efficiency, and open markets within each country in order to determine its ranking.
"El Salvador's economic freedom has been stagnant and scores for eight of the 10 economic
freedoms, notably freedom from corruption, property rights, business freedom, and government
spending, have deteriorated markedly over the past two decades." I believe El Salvador's poor
economic global presence is mainly a result of corrupt government and violence. The existence of
corruption and violence in El Salvador demonstrates a politically and economically extractive
institution, presents evidence of critical junctures that have led to societal changes, and begins to
explain why some nations choose not to be prosperous. In addition, El Salvador's close proximity to
North America does not lend itself to a shared political and economic course. These factors
combined with the presence of corruption

El Salvador Compare And Contrast
El Salvador: A Land of Contrasts and Compassion There are plenty of good things to be said about
El Salvador, the Latin American country that sits in the heart of Central America, surrounded by
volcanic mountains, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and a Pacific coast of startlingly beautiful
beaches and rustic fishing villages. Unfortunately, we rarely hear them, and, in fact, the last time
anything truly positive about the country made the mainstream news in the U.S. was when President
Barak Obama visited with his family in 2011, and most of that was cursory and short–lived. Beyond
the bloody civil war that lasted from 1979 to 1992, there has been little heard, or a word written ,or a

The Size Of Connecticut, El Salvador
The size of Connecticut, El Salvador is one of Central America's most densely populated countries
and has the highest mortality rate in the world. First conquered by the Spaniards in the early 1500s,
El Salvador's history is filled with tension, violence, and exclusion; the settlers robbed the
indigenous people of their land and forced them to slave in the coffee plant fields. Not only were the
indigenous people deprived of their land, it was kept in the hands of the elite, creating little to no
social mobility and further subjugating native Salvadorans. As discontent and tension increased
between the elite and the poor, a massacre occurred on January 22, 1932 that was carried out by the
National Guard, killing between 10,000 and 40,000 peasants–most of whom were indigenous
people. The slaughter ignited a fire among the Salvadoran people that was fueled by unfulfilled
promises of socio–economic parity and agrarian reform. In 1979 a civil war broke loose,

TOP Places to Visit in El Salvador

  • 1. Special Places In El Salvador We have all visited a place that has impacted our lives in a good way or in a bad way. Many have memories from their childhood home, while others have unforgettable memories from a trip they did to the beach. All of our experiences are different because they impact us in different ways. For me a special place that I visited that is very memorable to me is Los Planes de Renderos which is a city in El Salvador. Los Planes De Renderos in El Salvador is a memorable place to me because I got to experience the beautiful city with my family , It's where I got to try my favorite food which are pupusas directly from where they originally come from, and because I got to experience the celebration of independence day in El Salvador. One reason Los ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Los Planes De Renderos is known for their amazing restaurants which sell salvadorian authentic food. Since we were there, it was a must to try El Salvadors traditional food , pupusas. Pupusas are stuffed corncakes with anything you want and it comes with tomato sauce and curtido which is cabbage with other vegetables which is infused with vinegar. First, we went to this popular restaurant which is known for making "the best pupusas". I ordered 3 pupusas one cheese and 2 beans with cheese, when they were brought to me I expected small but normal pupusas like I'm used to, but in front of me were 3 large pupusas the size of a plate. Shortly after the waiters which were uniformed in white button up shirts and blue ties, brought us the sauce and curtido. The sauce was a bright red color and had a smooth liquidy consistency while the curtido was a bright orange color. The smell was a little bit different from the ones that I eat at home, It had a very good cheese smell and the tomato sauce and curtido all combined which created an authentic smell. The whole restaurant was filled with this smell, it was amazing. I took a piece of my pupusa and added the sauce and curtido , the taste was like an explosion in my mouth, the cheese was gooey and the cabbage had a good crunch everything had the perfect texture and combined deliciously. While enjoying my pupusas, the restaurant had music playing in the background and there was laughter and the sound of kids playing and people taking picture, all of this made the environment perfect. Finally, after I was done eating we explored the restaurant. This restaurant was big it had 2 stories and it was painted blue. The workers there all attended us with a smile , but you can see the exhaustion in their face because of all the walking they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Geography : El Salvador 's Geography Geography: El Salvador 's geography is very diverse, most of the land is plains and flat land but it is bordered by a chain of mountains. El Salvador is "known as the Land of Volcanoes, it has frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. It is the only country in Central America that does not have a coastline on the Caribbean Sea," (National Geographic). There are about 20 active volcanoes surrounding El Salvador, it is located on The Ring of Fire. There are two mountain ranges that circle around El Salvador. The northern mountain ranges, the Sierra Madre, form a chain along the border with Honduras and the southern mountain ranges are a discontinuous chain of more than twenty volcanoes. • 5. Empanadas In El Salvador El Salvador is a tropical country with unnumbered delicious fruits. Everywhere you go you will find plantain trees. Plantain trees are super popular in El Salvador. Salvadorans do not only use the plantains produced by this exotic tree for empanadas but they use the leaves of the tree for wrapping the famous tamales. My culture item is empanada but these empanadas are different. The empanada crust is made from the ripe plantains. In order to make the crust, the plantains must be ripe because that way it will taste sweeter. People in El Salvador smash the ripe plantains to make it into a dough. The empanada has a sweet milky cream inside. The milky cream is a mixture of milk and cornstarch. If you don't like the milky cream you will find empanadas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Government Of El Salvador Unidos por la Solidaridad The government of El Salvador has also created a similar program to Mexico's Tres por Uno called Unidos por la Solidaridad (Unity for Solidarity) (Orozco and Rouse, 2007). This program was launched in 2001 is managed by El Fondo de Inversión Social para el Desarrollo Local de El Salvador (FISDL), a national agency whose goal is to promote local development and reduce poverty in El Salvador (Orozco and Rouse, 2007). Unidos por la Solidaridad collaborates alongside Salvadoran hometown associations, NGO's, and other private organizations that help fund local projects to develop social infrastructure in poor communities (Orozco and Rouse, 2007; Terry, 2005 ). Although this is a smaller and fairly new program when compared to Mexico's Tres por Uno it has created over 500 projects in El Salvador, involving infrastructure, recreation, and health (Orozco and Rouse, 2007; Terry, 2005 ).. The total contribution of hometown associations (through remittances) has been over $2.1 million and continues to grow (Programa Unidos Por La Solidaridad; Terry, 2005 ). This program has too seen positive results in the community such as strengthening of the social capital at a local level, greater human and economic development along with more successful redirections of remittances. However, like other governmental projects it has some flaws such as government transparency, and limited resources (Programa Unidos Por La Solidaridad. Nonetheless the program continues to move ... • 9. Violence : El Salvador 's Violence Violence in El Salvador El Salvador is a country known for its beautiful beaches, mountainous landscape, and coffee export. Unfortunately, this perfect picture is only a wall that hides the true violence that occurs in the country. El Salvador's violence is an ongoing cycle, so how does today's violence differ and compare from the violence in the 1980's? The differences and similarities of violence in El Salvador from now and then involve root cause, political involvement, and economic issues. Today's violence in El Salvador consists of ruthless gang members. According to CRS (Congressional Research Service) about 30,000 kids have joined the maras and it will continue to increase. Due to the gang violence, children are fleeing the country to prevent from becoming victims or recruited, furthermore families are streaming into the U.S to seek asylum. Alike today, El Salvador experienced the same immigration crisis back in 1980 when the civil war was the cause for Salvadorans to immigrate to the United Sates. Repression and violation of human rights was the root cause, now gang violence is the root cause striking a similar pattern of the effects of violence. In 1980, El Salvador's right–wing government had death squads to kill citizens for suspicion of supporting a social reform. Military soldiers attacked many villages, including El Mozote in which men, women, and children were tortured and subjected to sexual violence. In contrast, the violence Salvadorans face today is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. El Salvador And The Civil War El Salvador is a small, Central American, Hispanic speaking country, which borders with Honduras, Guatemala and the Pacific Ocean and has currently a population of 6.4 million. In the late 1880s coffee was the major export product and it became 95% of the country's income. This wealth although was unequally distributed and as a result it was concentrated only on the 2% of the population. As a result poverty grew and the conflict between the poor and the rich became a big problem El Salvador had to deal with during the 20th century. A Central American Socialist Party was born and lead people against the government and in response the government of El Salvador at the time supported military death teams who killed anyone who supported that party. In 1980 El Salvador's civil war officially began. Thousands of people were kidnapped and killed. Church workers were abducted, raped and killed, yet again the peace talks did not begin until 1984 and the Peace Accords of El Salvador was not signed until 1992. Between those twelve years 75,000 people died as a result of the civil war and most of these people were completely innocent. Since 1992 the El Salvadorian economy has been trying to recover from a bitter war that left many wounds open. Between 1991 and 2002 poverty levels in the country declined significantly and many social advances were seen as school enrolment and access to health and water services increased. Therefore someone can assume that since the traumatic civil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. El Salvador 's Impact On The United States The area that is currently El Salvador was originally comprised of 3 vast indigenous states and various territories. The Pipils, indigenous occupants who settled in present day Mexico, are a nomadic people that originated from Nahua. The Lencas settled and represented the eastern district while the Mayan the Chortis occupied the North zone of the Lempa Hi River. In 1524, Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado neglected to seize area in light of the Pipil warriors. Be that as it may, in 1525 he returned and effectively vanquished the nation and named it El Salvador which English translation means, "The Savior". In 1811, the longings for freedom reverberated throughout the country, yet was quickly pounded by the troops sent by neighboring country Guatemala. In 1821, El Salvador and other Central American nations declared independence from Spain and were joined to Mexico the following year, however El Salvador opposed the union. The nation turned into an autonomous republic in 1838 after the Central American coalition separated. Geology El Salvador is the least expansive nation in Central America and is no bigger than the state of Massachusetts. This precipitous nation is flanked by the Pacific Ocean, Guatemala, and Honduras. Known as the Land of Volcanoes, El Salvador has incessant seismic tremors and volcanic movement. It is the sole nation in Central America that does not have a coastline on the Caribbean Sea. Also, the backwoods of El Salvador have been chopped down ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. El Salvador Research Paper Problem St atement The twelve–year civil war in El Salvador displaced thousands from their homeland leading many to flee as refugees and from political persecution to neighboring countries like the United States. Today an estimated quarter of the Salvadoran population are living outside the country's borders (Perla, 2009). Although Salvadorans in the United States have gone from a refugee population, it is evident that the long–term effects from the civil war are still present today. Today's higher education system has yet to address those long–term effects by failing to understand the Salvadoran experience. Purpose Statement The purpose of this study is to profoundly understand and explore the effects of trauma and war experience in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Salvadoran Refugee Experience During the 1980's, the country's civil war caused thousands of Salvadorans to flee their homeland in search of a more politically stable country (Menjivar, 2000). Ironically, despite the signing of the Peace Accords that ended the war almost two and a half decades ago, today thousands of Salvadorans still continue to seek safety and refuge in the U.S. and in other countries (Menjivar, 2000) Historically, migration has played a key role in Salvadoran history yet events during the late 20th century increased the number of people emigrating out of El Salvador. In an attempt to escape the violence and repression caused by the civil war, thousands of Salvadorans fled to other countries where many ended up in refugee camps.(Menjivar, 2000) From the late 1970s onward, migration trends within and from El Salvador changed drastically. People became displaced after fleeing from conflict areas; "some fled to adjacent regions such as Honduras or Guatemala, and others crossed two international borders (to Mexico) or three (to the United States)" (Menjivar, 2000). Migration to the United States continued to increase drastically from the 1960s to 1980s. During the 1980's thousands of Salvadorans fled in hopes of escaping the violence and repression caused by the civil war. • 17. Southern California Vs. El Salvador I wake up to the warmth of the sun touching my skin; I can hear the birds chirping outside calling my name to get ready and start the day. I get out of bed just to be attacked by two furry blurs trying to lick my face and showing me how much they love me. I know that I have a long day ahead of me but I have no idea what I should do. I could go to the beach and feel the soft sand in between my toes or go to a store and prepare a nice dinner for myself. So much time in a day, but I don't have a clue on how to spend it. These are the types of decisions I need to make on a daily basis. I go outside and take in the beauty of my surroundings. Everything seems so perfect, so beautiful, as if it was supposed to look that way. El Salvador is a wonderful place, full of wonderful people, and amazing scenery and there is no place I would rather be at the moment. Living in California is wonderful, but it doesn't give me the culture that I am looking for. El Salvador is like my home, somewhere where I can visit once in a while, but my real home is California where I will always want to live. Although El Salvador and California share some similarities like the settings, there are some traits like foods, culture, and the people that make them special in their own way. One of the common differences between El Salvador and Southern California is the food. Carl's Jr and In–N–Out are two of the most beloved fast food restaurants that have won people's hearts and taste buds. For people who live ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Descriptive Essay About El Salvador It is known for its Pacific ocean beaches, surf spots and mountainous landscape. It is named "the savior" and is the largest coffee exporters in the world. In fact, it is the only country in Central America that does not have a coastline on the Caribbean Sea. El Salvador is a Spanish–speaking country in South America, and this is the country I will be traveling to. El Salvador is the most misunderstood country of them all. Some people say that it is quite dangerous while others say it's quite boring compared to the rest of Central America. Most visitors say El Salvador is not safe and this is because the lack of mass tourism equals lack of information. This is the reason I chose El Salvador to travel to. This vibrant nation is very tropical with rich forests and fertile farmlands. From Volcanoes and crater lakes to surfing and Wildlife, it's filled to the top with so many things to do! El Salvador has so many things to offer and I am eager to explore it. I will be arriving in El Salvador on June 12th and leaving June 17th. My round trip ticket will cost $534. I will be flying with Spirit Airlines from Detroit Michigan. On June 12th my sister is driving me to the Detroit Wayne Airport. I will board the flight at 6:40 am. This flight will be two hours and fifty–three minutes, and I will arrive at Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida at 9:33 pm. I will then have a layover of one hour and thirty–five minutes. El Salvador Compare And Contrast Now El Salvador isn't a strong economic country there isn't really much of a police force or military like you would have in America where police waits to pull anyone over for a little thing. In El Salvador not many people had a car or even knew what driving was, the roads are narrow and if you're by the mountains or outside the city. Then, the only way to travel was someone truck if they had one and rode in the back, a bus, bike, or simply walking. Now the major difference which got my attention was one day we went to the mall to buy some toys and I wanted this small Porsche so my grandmother decided to get me it. Like many of its' neighboring countries, it possesses very few natural resources. Since the nation's economy is based predominantly on agriculture, it's no surprise that its' citizens often experience "resource roller coasters". In addition, its' long history of inappropriate land tenure and ownership practices date all the way back to colonialism. Even more strikingly, "sixty percent of El Salvador's population is expected to live in the capital by 2010." As a result, El Salvador has to deal with continuing environmental problems. Despite receiving six feet of rainfall each year, most of the nation's water is highly contaminated. In fact, thousands are killed each year due to water contamination, many of whom are children. At the same time, most of the citizens of the nation cannot afford bottled water. After the twelve year civil war destroyed much of the country's infrastructure, poor areas became even poorer. Homes and water sources had been destroyed by militia during the war. After returning home, some citizens chose to hand dig wells in order to obtain drinking water. However, many others went to their nearest stream, river or pond to collect water. These unsafe and contaminated water sources caused many people to become ill with intestinal diseases. According to Ricardo Navarro, El Salvador's government has failed to protect its' most precious resource: "Farmers have cut down forests that used to store rain water. Ranchers have allowed their livestock to pollute rivers. Communities have put latrines too close to shallow wells." Others, such as Marisol Prima Ponza, who runs a government dispensary that tracks the health of 375 children in several communities, believe that things are improving. The two gangs that were talked about in this documentary was the notorious MS–13 and 18th street gang. This documentary was made to inform people that there is a serious gang problem not only in the United States, but in other parts of the world as well. Furthermore, I will discuss the Gangs of El Salvador, current issues regarding gangs, and how the country of El Salvador is combating the gang issue. According to the United States Federal Government and the Department of Justice, the definition of a gang is an association of three or more individuals, whose members collectively identify themselves by adopting a group identity. In addition, it then describes the ways that gangs can identify themselves by tattoos, hand signs, a common name, slogan, and graffiti. On the other hand, the definition then goes into saying that the group's focus is to implement fear, engage in criminal activity, and intimidate others. If we look into the history of MS–13 and 18th street gang, we can see that the refugees had a tough time assimilating into the American culture in the 1980s when they came over from El Salvador to Los Angeles. • 35. El Salvador Civil War Effects There has been many long term effects from the civil war in El Salvador. The war lasted about 12 years from 1980 to 1992, and El salvador is still dealing with old issues from that time. It was the darkest times in El Salvador's history. The inequality of social classes, poverty, and military rule led Salvadorians to revolt against their own government. In 1932, the Central American Socialist Party was created in El salvador. The peasants revolted against this with riots. Within a few weeks, the revolt died after the military killed around 30,000 civilians, most people killed were indigenous. Some people were killed just for looking as if they supported the uprising. This massacre is know as the Matanza. The salvadoran military ruled for decades until finally the death of an archbishop Oscar Romero was assassinated during mass in 1980, which fueled political violence and led to the civil war. To make matters worse, at Oscar Romero's funeral, many came to mourn and were attacked by snipers on the roofs, killing 42 and wounding 200. In December 1980, four American nuns were killed by the military even though they framed 5 salvdorans, 4:5 spoke out and told the press they were ordered to by the Salvadoran military. Essay on Poverty and Inequality in El Salvador The poverty and inequality that has plagued El Salvador since the early twentieth century stems from their rule by the Oligarchy, which dates back to colonial times. The Oligarchy's lack of consistency in implementing and following through with reforms has prevented progress from occurring in the country. Furthermore, the many wars and political revolts in El Salvador impeded its economic and social growth. The main focus of the Oligarchy was to turn a profit. However, the Indians were susceptible to the diseases brought over by the Spaniards, which led to a decline in the Indian population. Because the Oligarchy viewed the Indians as disposable labor, they did not feel the need to treat them to prevent their numbers from dwindling. Instead, the Spanish replaced them with slaves imported from Africa (Montgomery 71). This was one of the first signs of inequality brought to El Salvador by the Oligarchy. In the seventeenth century, the demand for cacao dropped. As a result of this, El Salvador plunged into an economic depression, and the Oligarchy had to find a new source of revenue, which they found in indigo (Montgomery 71). Indigo was profitable because of the increase in demand for textiles in Europe at this time (Krauss 59–60). This led the Oligarchy to increase its acquisition of land in El Salvador, which was mainly inhabited by the native Indians. On top of being extremely lucrative, indigo was far less labor–intensive than cacao was, so it became the main focus of El Salvador's agriculture by 1600 (Montgomery 71). Unfortunately, these developments had high costs for the Indian populations. When the indigo rotted, diseases would be brought to the Indian villages that cultivated it, killing off entire villages in several instances. When this happened, they were merely replaced by another tribe (Krauss 60). Eventually the mistreatment of the Indians by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is hard because their Government is killing their own people, not only that, but they are hiring people to kill the people so that it doesn't seem as if the government is against the people. As the Guerillas are for the people, they do many things that are against the Government such as killing government leaders and the rich. As Romero is the Archbishop, his faith challenges him to practice the virtues of prudence, justice, and fortitude. The Virtue of prudence is "being cautious or weary" (98). Being prudent "inclines people to see lightly and translate our seeing into rightful actions" (Madison, 98). Prudence is demonstrated in the scene is how Romero acted after he found out about the killing of Father Grande. When he saw father Grande, Romero didn't lash out, he grieved and found peace. "El Salvador's economic freedom has been stagnant and scores for eight of the 10 economic freedoms, notably freedom from corruption, property rights, business freedom, and government spending, have deteriorated markedly over the past two decades." I believe El Salvador's poor economic global presence is mainly a result of corrupt government and violence. The existence of corruption and violence in El Salvador demonstrates a politically and economically extractive institution, presents evidence of critical junctures that have led to societal changes, and begins to explain why some nations choose not to be prosperous. Unfortunately, we rarely hear them, and, in fact, the last time anything truly positive about the country made the mainstream news in the U.S. was when President Barak Obama visited with his family in 2011, and most of that was cursory and short–lived. Beyond the bloody civil war that lasted from 1979 to 1992, there has been little heard, or a word written ,or a photo seen of the vibrant and sensual side of this land of forests, wide rivers, excellent restaurants and boutique hotels. A recent four–day day trip took us from San Salvador, the capitol, to the mountains, small towns and markets and ancient sites that feature glimpses of pre–historic life within a stones through of a golden statue of Che Guevara. Along the way we even got to mingle with the spirits in a cemetery that caters as much to the living as it accommodates the dead that was filled with opulent decorations and candles in honor of deceased relatives and friends. And everywhere, there is family. From the moment you step off the plane at Monsenor Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdamez International Airport, there are children, grandchildren, grand mothers, pop– pops, sisters, brothers, ... First conquered by the Spaniards in the early 1500s, El Salvador's history is filled with tension, violence, and exclusion; the settlers robbed the indigenous people of their land and forced them to slave in the coffee plant fields. Not only were the indigenous people deprived of their land, it was kept in the hands of the elite, creating little to no social mobility and further subjugating native Salvadorans. As discontent and tension increased between the elite and the poor, a massacre occurred on January 22, 1932 that was carried out by the National Guard, killing between 10,000 and 40,000 peasants–most of whom were indigenous people. The slaughter ignited a fire among the Salvadoran people that was fueled by unfulfilled promises of socio–economic parity and agrarian reform. In 1979 a civil war broke loose, Salvadorans were disappearing, illegally detained by the military, and killed.
