Characteristics Of Oteka In War Brothers
In the book War Brothers (Sharon E. McKay), Oteka is constantly showing that his independence,
dedication, and intelligence are his most powerful personality traits. Throughout the book, Oteka
displays a great deal of independence. He spends a year raising money for a medicine man so he can
speak to his mother. Oteka does this alone, without the help of friends or family. He simply relies on
himself. He says: "The two five–thousand shilling notes that were folded tightly in his hand, added
to the ninety thousand shillings he had hidden in his hut, would at least be enough. Begging, selling,
working– it had taken him almost a year to collect this princely sum" (McKay 23). Oteka has lost
his whole family to many different illnesses, and does not have any money left to him by his
parents. His only friend/family is a woman named Adaa. She is old and is slowly growing blind, so
Oteka cannot go to Adaa for help. On his own, he finds a way to raise ninety thousand shilling notes
by working a job, selling, and begging on the streets. Another demonstration of Oteka's
independence is when he buries his little sister, Esther. He also cares for his mother when no one
else would. He recalls his past saying, "When Oteka's baby sister, Esther, died of twoo jonyo AIDS,
Oteka alone buried her. As his beautiful mother grew weaker and weaker it was Oteka who bathed
her and dripped water onto her parched tongue" (McKay 30). Oteka had waited for no one to bury
his sister. He must have known that none of the villagers would go near her in fear of catching the
disease. Nobody dared to go near or look after his mom because of the same reason. He did what
needed to be done without being told, or asking assistance from anyone. Oteka's independence is
what helps him move forward in life, He acts on his own without any influence. Other than showing
independence, being dedicated is another key aspect to Oteka's character. When Oteka is warned by
his mother's spirit of Kony, he thinks he should leave the displacement camp. However, he decides
to keep his promise and care for Adaa instead. As he runs back toward the camp he determines: "The
answer was in that– to stay and fulfill his obligation to the old woman and wait for a

Lord's Resistance Army
Over 1.8 million people in Northern Uganda have been displaced, in fear of attacks from the Lord's
Resistance Army, into internally displaced people's camps. This extremist group has been causing
havoc in Northern Uganda by ransacking villages, kidnapping children, and brutally killing innocent
people. Their violent acts are fueled by their radical religious beliefs. The notorious Joseph Kony
founded the Lord's Resistance Army, also know as LRA, in 1986, with the intentions of creating a
new government based on the Ten Commandments. Since 1986, he has created a powerful army of
almost 3,000 soldiers, most of them who are children. They specifically target the Acholi people, an
ethnic tribe located in Northern Uganda and some parts of Sudan. ... Show more content on

The group's effects on the region are prevalent and easily noticeable, but it is important to consider
the causes in order to really understand the issue. Uganda's unstable, harsh rulers, such as Idi Amin
and Milton Obote, have caused many ethnic groups, like the Acholi, serious pain and oppression.
Once this hatred toward the government is paired with radical Christian ideas, the LRA is going to
cause a lot of damage through heinous actions that effect a swarm of people. The Lord's Resistance
Army's power was infinite because did not face a lot of opposition within Uganda, and with outside
sources, such as Sudan supporting it, it was able to be self–sufficient. Today, Uganda continues to
face the harsh rebels, but since a viral internet campaign called "Kony 2012", the awareness for the
issue amongst the rest of the world increased dramatically. Even though the campaign itself ended
up being a flop, it raised concern and the Ugandan government made a huge push to combat the
issue. Although Kony has not been caught, it is estimated that he now only has several hundred
fighters, all of whom live in the bush and do not attack villages as often. There is still a lot of
progress to be made, especially with helping the families recover from their losses, but there has
been a large wave of aid organizations who have been working towards mending the wound in
Northern Uganda. In the history of the conflict, the world

Life of Idi Amin Essay
Idi Amin was a soldier first and foremost. He imposed a scheduled and militaristic way of life on his
followers. His own military record paints the picture of his rise to power. During British
colonization of Uganda Idi Amin began his endeavor into the military. It was in 1946 that Amin
enlisted in the King's African Rifle's, KAR, the British army in colonized Africa. (Boddy–Evans)
Upon his entry he was placed as assistant cook, a far from glorious position. However he managed
to rise through the ranks. He became a Corporal in 1948 and was stationed in Burma, Somalia, and
Kenya. This was during the British situation in Kenya that was referred to as the Mau Mau revolt.
The Mau Mau gunmen were a secret society of rebels which aimed to over ... Show more content on

He did so out of fear of being taken out by Obote because he was seen as a threat to the ex–
presidents authority. Secondly he performed a coup because he acknowledged that he was capable
of gaining a higher status of power. Though there were some attempts on Amin's administration he
remained in office from 1971–1979. (Boddy–Evans) Idi Amin's time in office was seen as the
bloodiest times in his countries history. Like most dictators he ruled with fear. His crimes against
humanity are well documented and anything that isn't is still spread through word of mouth. It was
these erratic actions that lead to the downfall of the Ugandan economy. (Idi Amin Killer File)
Obote, the man Amin helped into power prior to his own coup, had a positive effect on the economy.
Obote declared a strong national economy with little foreign dependence. Unlike Amin's
administration, these types of statements were not propaganda. In the years of Obote's financial
independence there was an 11% GDP growth in the economy. However Amin's administration left
the country at a negative 0.6% GDP. (Luganda)
Amin was welcomed by most western states such as the United Kingdom and Israel. He was seen as
a gentle giant and worthy of going into business with. This was in part due to the fact

Lassa Fever Chapter Summary
Beginning from Prehistory, the author mentions that once upon a time when there were no diseases.
Life spans were much longer than those we appreciate today, there was no suffering. Then the
disaster struck, the oldest bacteria found at the Strelley Pool Chert in Pilbara, Western Australia is
around 3.4 billion years old. The fossilized bones of a mother and child, dating from around 8,000
BC found which demonstrates the presence of tuberculosis from that long period of time. According
to the historian Manetho of Sebennytos (fl. third century BC), the earliest recorded epidemic
occurred in 3180 BC in Egypt.
Antiquity, in this chapter the author starts with a mythological aspect of the disease, then talk about
the disease prevailed in each ancient ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of these is Marburg virus, the symptoms of the strange disease progressed from the initial flu–
like stage to acute viremia. The World Health Organization gave Marburg it's highest rating in its
risk group categorization of disease. There is no cure for this disease at this moment. In between the
two Ugandan and Rhodesian outbreaks of Marburg, another new disease appeared on 12 January
1969 known as Lassa fever symptoms include bad back, sore throat, irregular heartbeats and unusual
clotting. The next major outbreak in Africa is Ebola. After further outbreaks in Zaire and Sudan,
Ebola had effectively disappeared by 1979. In 2007, the Bundibugyo ebolavirus emerged in Uganda.
The two original strains of the disease have remained active. The 2014 outbreak of Ebola was the
worst yet recorded and marked the first time the disease has reached epidemic proportions. It
appears to be conceivable that Ebola has been spreading through the bat colonies of central and West
Africa for decades, mutating as it goes. What number of bats are tainted, nobody knows. As to
where it will strike next, that too is obscure and researchers still don't know precisely how Ebola
kills people. The most likelihood course is by causing the immune system breakdown, and afterward
flooding the body with replicating viruses. Besides this several another disease also threatens
humanity, such as Nipah virus, SARS, mad cow disease, bird flu, anthrax and much more. The
author also mentions that adjacent to these new diseases, some older diseases are making a round
back such as cholera, diphtheria, genital herpes, giardiasis, viral hepatitis, malaria, measles,
pertussis, pneumonic plague, syphilis, tuberculosis and viral encephalitis. He termed this round back
of diseases as 'The Return of Pandora's

Essay on The Impact of Sanctions on Idi Amin's...
From the time Idi Amin came to power in Uganda until the time his regime fell, his brutal rule
negatively impacted Uganda in every aspect of its existence. In 1971, Idi Amin along with military
support, ousted Prime Minister Milton Obote while he was out of the country in Singapore attending
a Commonwealth summit meeting with many other leaders of African and European countries. Over
the course of his violent reign, Idi Amin killed between 100,000 and 300,000 of his own people and
doomed the economy with the expulsion of those of Asian nationality. Many of his victims were
killed for no reason, or for a very insignificant action. Amin was in power from 1971 to 1979 and
proved early into his dictatorship that he was very powerful. Only one ... Show more content on

Not only did Amin harm Uganda by killing a lot of its population, he also was the cause of an
almost complete economic collapse, when, in 1972, he declared an "economic war" on the Asian
population in Uganda. Uganda's economy relied heavily on its Asian population because they ran
most of the manufacturing and trade sectors as well as making up a large portion of the civil service.
Amin's order of expulsion for the Asian population gave them three months to exit Uganda. They
were given British passports and the businesses they left behind were turned over to Amin's
supporters. Amin not only decimated the population of Uganda during his despotic reign but caused
the economy to falter and fail as well. As his reign of terror went on, news of Amin's crimes and
atrocities began surfacing internationally, spurring retaliatory actions from countries all over the
world. The United States as well as the United Kingdom, Japan, France, the Netherlands, and West
Germany played a large role in Uganda's trading by being the largest exporters of their coffee. The
United States exported the most, being responsible for 75% of all the coffee exported by Uganda. In
the beginning stages of Amin's reign, the United States did not do much more than denounce Amin
and the major violations of human rights being committed under him (Nurnberger 71). Through the
thesis and knowledge of Uganda's economy from William Goold, the legislative

The Death Toll Of The Genocide
The crime of committing, destroying, or trying to destroy the existence of a group of people because
of their racial (whose identity is defined by physical), national (whose identity is defined by a
common country of nationality or national origin), ethnic (whose identity is defined by physical
characteristics), or religious group (whose identity is defined by common religious creeds, beliefs,
practices, or rituals), is known as genocide, and this term did not exist before 1944. Usually the
death toll of the genocide is in thousands and in some cases in millions. According to the Canadian
scholars, Frank Chalk and Kurt Jonassohn, they have identified four main types of genocide: first,
Ideological: this type of genocide is committed in an effort to achieve an ideal social structure in
which all members of society are alike or hold the same belief. For example the Armenian genocide
in 1915, when the leaders of the Turkish government killed over 1.5 millions of Turkey's Armenians
living in the Ottoman Empire. Also, Cambodian, and Jews/Roma in Germany. Second type,
Retributive: this genocide mostly to occur when one group dominates another group and fears its
rebellion or when the other group actually rebels. For example the genocide in Rwanda in 1994,
when members of the Hutu ethnic majority in Rwanda murdered as many as 800,000 people, mostly
of the Tutsi minority. The third type is Developmental: usually the government use this type of
genocide against the native people to

Child Soldiers in Uganda
Children and families in Gulu, Uganda today. It is now over one year since peace talks between the
Ugandan government and the Lord's Resistance began in Sudan. A year later little has changed and
people are still suffering, especially women and children.
The endless war in northern Uganda has affected mostly women and children. Many women have
become widows as a result of the rebels killing their husbands. Consequently, they are overloaded
with the heavy responsibility of looking after orphans.
And women do not have time to rest. They wake up early in the morning to find ways of feeding

A Growth Of Human Rights Violations
In Northern Uganda there has been a growth of Human Rights violations for the last thirty years due
to power of Joseph Kony and the LRA. The Lord 's Resistance Army started when Joseph Kony
took over the Holy Spirit Movement, and founded the LRA. The LRA is an army focused on
overthrowing the Ugandan government and replacing it with a government rule using the 10
commandments. The LRA has committed constant Human Rights on the citizens of Uganda over the
last thirty years. The LRA has kidnapped over 25 thousand children (boys and girls) and forced them
to join the LRA. The LRA has been known to ruthlessly destroy villages, to kill the old, and kidnap
the young, only to later force the kidnappees to murder or torture their parents and ... Show more

After Lakwena's exile, Joseph Kony began to lead the movement. Joseph Kony claimed to be
Lakwena's cousin(War Child, Linton House). Without a clear objective Joseph Kony rebranded the
movement from the Holy Spirit Movement to the Lord's Resistance Army(LRA). Joseph Kony
intended to take over the Ugandan Government and run the country based on the Christian ten
Commandments. Kony's movement quickly lost support, so he started abducting children to increase
the popularity and dominance, thus starting the Human Rights Violations. The Children once
kidnapped would be turned into soldiers (boys) or sex slaves(girls). Joseph Kony made it a point of
his invasions to violate the basic human rights of the kidnapees as well as their families. The attacks
were often without a purpose, only to assert dominance over the rest of the population(War Child,
Linton House). The Soldiers would masquerade as military soldiers, or other trusted figures, or wait
until the majority of villagers were in one gathered space, and launch their ruthless attacks. The
Soldiers would kidnap those who they thought could be useful, and kill those who did not have a
significant up side. Joseph Kony's repeatedly violated human rights, because of his blatant lack of
respect or boundaries when pertaining to others(War Child, Linton House). The "raids" on innocent
villages often ended with unnecessary and

Essay On Lord's Resistance Army
The Lord's Resistance Army
The Lord's Resistance Army began as The Holy Spirit movement in the 1980's which was guided by
Alice Lakwena. Alice believed that she was lead by the Holy Spirit to overthrow the Ugandan
government because of their abuse to the Acholi people. People quickly joined the resistance out of
their hatred of the Ugandan government. The movement continued to grow until they lost a battle to
the government which eventually lead to the capture of Alice. The movement lacked leadership until
Alice's supposedly cousin Joseph Kony took over. In the late 80's Joseph Kony renamed the
movement to The Lord's Resistance Army. He based the resistance on overthrowing the government
and base his government on the Ten Commandments. The movement earned their status by their acts
of violence. Their goal was to overthrow the Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni. Kony ... Show

There has been desperate pleas for peace between the Ugandan government and the Lord's
Resistance Army. Every time efforts for peace has been offered Kony shuts the efforts down. While
government efforts have weakened the army's numbers they still have not been stopped. Efforts such
as the Ugandan People's Defence Force has taken various steps to stopping this resistance but has
not successfully stopped the group from attacking villages. The army has spread over the years in
the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and the Central African Republic. The United
Nations has taken steps to protect and aid civilians but unfortunately in the DRC, the UN does not
have the resources to protect civilians. Another problem is communication, an attack might happen
but won't get word until weeks after the event. The International Criminal Court has issued warrants
for Joseph Kony but the warrants have failed to arrest him and his

Children in Armed Conflict/Child Soldiers in the Realm of Human Security
Introduction
A widely misunderstood concept of human security is the existence of child soldiers. Child soldiers
are what the United Nations and other international organizations refer to as any person below 18
years of age who is "associated with an armed force or armed group." They have been recruited or
used by an armed force or group in any capacity, including but not limited to being employed as
fighters, cooks, porters, messengers, spies or for sexual purposes. It does not only refer to a child
who is taking or has taken a direct part in hostilities."

The article " The Perfect Weapon for the Meanest Wars," by Jeffrey Gettleman discusses the issue of
child soldiers, children who are used during the war. He explains that the idea of the child soldier is
spreading. In these places rebels are taking control without caring and using population as prey. The
authors message in the article is that adults are manipulating children and using them as weapons for
their own needs. Jeffrey Gettleman uses cause and effects, the principle of causation, throughout
article. The author uses the strategy to show us how the child soldier started and its aftereffect. For
example in the article the author talks about Somalia. It began in 1991, when the government was

Unfortunately, looking back at the holy texts of various religions provides no answers. There are
elements and contexts in all of them, which can be correlated with both tolerance and intolerance,
indeed contradictory and confusing. Not to forget that those texts are usually abstract, vague, and
implicit with ambiguity and every translation is an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The concept of 'Jihad' was used in order to justify the fight for the 'injustice of poverty' (not fight
towards non–believers). When a subsequent Khalifah, Bakr was selected, many were claiming
themselves the subsequent prophet after Prophet Muhammad. In order to gain recognition and
achieve unity in the Islamic world, he launched wars to the surrounding areas. The conquest was
continued by his successors as the expansion of power contributed to the accumulation of wealth
and talent, finally constituting the grand Islamic civilisation. During that time, the Christians and
other believers lived peacefully with the Muslims, paid tax and were well protected.3 These series of
'Jihad' depicted the natural rise of a civilisation, like any other civilisations in the world history.
They do not fit in the usual conception of 'religious wars' that one has in mind, which are battles
with explicit aim to exterminate other religions. Subsequently, in the 11th century in Europe, the
crusades were summoned by Pope Urban II, to free Jerusalem from Seljuk Turks, who harassed
peaceful Christian pilgrims to the holy land. The war ended after the explicit aim of freeing
Jerusalem was achieved. The subsequent crusades in the region were mainly due to the struggle for
dominance between Islamic and Christian powers after the establishment of Christian Kingdoms to
harvest riches following the victory of the first crusade.4 Hence the very first war

Ethnic Conflicts And Its Effects On Post Colonial Societies
Today, it is hard to imagine how only sixty years ago the world was dominated by European
empires. In 1921, 84 percent of the earth's surface had been colonised since the sixteenth century.
There were as many as 168 colonies. By the 1960s, after years of fighting, most Western colonial
territories had gained independence. The following decades showed how much the ghost of
colonisation still loomed over post–colonial societies though. Around the world today, conflict is
found in many areas that were once colonised or controlled by Western European powers. The cause
of many of these continuing and uncontrollable conflicts lies in past colonial policies, especially
those regarding territorial boundaries, the treatment of indigenous people, the privileging of some
groups over others, the unequal distribution of wealth and resources, local governmental
infrastructures, and the formation of non–democratic or non–participatory governmental systems. It
is therefore essential, if one wants to understand the causes of these ethnic conflicts, to examine not
only the contemporary issues, but also important historical factors such as past colonial policies and
their lingering effects. Colonisation was motivated by the European hunger for African resources.
The subsequent exploitation of the African people and the uprooting of their spiritual values by
Christian missionaries would leave a permanent European stamp on the continent. Colonial states
often promoted ethnic rivalry by

Essay The Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda and South Sudan
Introduction In the African countries of Uganda and South Sudan, thousands of men, women and
children are being brutally murdered and mutilated in their own villages. Children are being
kidnapped by the thousands. Women are being brutally raped. Shockingly, the assailants in these
heinous crimes are children, armed under the leadership of a military madman named Joseph Kony.
Calling themselves the Lord's Resistance Army, they are considered one of the most vicious terrorist
groups in the world.
Beginning of the LRA The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) was originally founded in 1986 by Alice
Lakwena in northern Uganda under the name the Holy Spirit Movement Forces. Subsequently, the
group was taken over in 1987 by Joseph Kony after the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
State Department as a terrorist group since 2001. Likewise, the group's leader Joseph Kony has also
been listed as global terrorist by the State Department since 2008. Subsequently, the LRA was
officially listed as a terrorist organization by the African Union in 2011.
Kony Under the leadership of Joseph Kony, the LRA has become increasingly violent, often towards
the Acholi people, who they claim to protect. Kony uses scriptures taken from the Pentateuch to
convince his followers that they are doing the will of God by murdering and mutilating innocent
people. Moreover, while declaring he follows both Christianity and Islam, he also maintains that he
receives guidance from the spirits of the dead through black magic rituals. A warrant was issued for
Kony along with four of his commanders by the International Criminal Court in 2005, for crimes
against humanity and related war crimes. According to the U.S. State Department, two of the
commanders are assumed dead, while the whereabouts of Kony and the two others remain unknown.
Currently, the United States has offered a reward of five million dollars for information leading to

The Course of Political Development in Uganda and its Effect on Economic Development
Development has recently become a new buzz word in international relations. Through an
exploration of political, social and economic development around the globe, scholars are trying to
understand which policies are most beneficial, and why certain policies are effective and why some
fail. The connection between different types of development is often an important part of this
research as well. The connection between political and economic development is of specific interest
since the end of the Cold War and the failure of most communist–based systems. The emergence of
capitalism as the dominant world economic system at the conclusion of the Cold ... Show more

Political and economic development in Uganda based on these terms provides a strong case for the
relationship between the two. The lack of political development in Uganda since independence from
Britain in 1962 has hindered economic development and it was not until recent political stability that
Uganda has been able to experience any sort of economic development.
To understand the political development in Uganda, it is important to start shortly before 1962 to
examine the political atmosphere of independence. Under the colonial system, Uganda was a
protectorate, meaning that land rights of Africans were respected, despite the commonplace of
forced labor and high taxes. In 1961 Uganda was granted self–rule before gaining full independence
in 1962. With the granting of self–rule, three major political parties formed, the Uganda People's
Congress (UPC), the Democratic Party (DP) and the Kabaka Yekka (KY). The main platform of the
UPC was nationalist and the party strived to unite all Ugandans despite ethnic differences. The KY
was mainly an ethnic party consisting of the Baganda people who were the most favored under
British rule. An alliance between the UPC and KY gave them more collective strength than the DP
and increased the political power of Milton Obote.
At independence in 1962, Obote, of the UPC, was appointed Prime

More than The Drum Beat
"O.M.G, I love that beat." The few years I have spent in the United States of Americas, more
generally in the western culture, it is very common to hear young people embrace such phrases in
appreciating music. In non–western culture, music is always created for very specific purposes and
one cannot just 'love that beat.' Music is more than just the beat, rhythm and a sing–along melody. In
this paper, I will compare the traditional purpose of music and the culture of the drum in Native
American and Ugandan tribes. Dr. Peck, in her book, Native American Music, defines culture as

UGANDA Uganda is a country located in Africa that is surrounded by Kenya and the Republic of
Congo. Uganda's capital is Kampala and some other major cities would be Gulu, Lira, Mbarara,
Jinja, Bwizibwera, Mbale, Mukono, Kasese and Masaka. The coordinates are 1 00 N, 32 00 E and
the total area of Uganda is two hundred forty one thirty eight thousand. The land is one hundred
ninety seven hundred thousand square kilometers and the water being forty three nine hundred thirty
eight thousand square kilometers. When you are comparatively speaking about Uganda it is just
slightly smaller than the state of Oregon.
The population of Uganda is three forty–seven thousand fifty–eight hundred. There is one thousand
four hundred Gross Domestic Product per capita. The life expectancy for males is fifty–three years
old and the female lives to about fifty–five. The currency is equal to about two thousand six hundred
four and six cents in the United States of America. The literacy rate for males is seventy–seven
percent and the females are fifty–eight percent.
At first Uganda was controlled by the British and was called Baganda and was ruled by a king. The
British East Africa Company claimed the territory in 1888. The British did not have as much control
as they liked and this led to fighting amongst the different religious groups. Then a little later the
British broadened the power they had and established Uganda as a protectorate. A treaty between

Idi Amin As A Leader That Abuse The Power
Throughout history there have been many leaders who abuse the power that has been bestowed upon
them. A person who abuses such power is considered a dictator, tyrant, despot, etc. These dictators
typically rule through fear, and don't usually win the hearts of many. They will do whatever it takes
to stay in power over the country that they rule. One such ruler is named Idi Amin. Idi was a ruler
who abused his power and saw himself as someone who was a man of influence.
Idi Amin was born on 1925 in Koboka, Uganda (History.com). He was raised with little to no
education, but quickly found his place in the world. He joined the King's African Rifles (KAR) and
quickly rose through the ranks.Milton Obote had become the first prime minister of Uganda in 1962.
He had forged an alliance with Amin, who helped expand the size of the Ugandan military. After a
few assassination attempts, Obote began to question Amin's loyalty and ordered his arrest. When the
leader of Uganda was away, Amin staged a coup and seized the government. Idi took the
government with blood, which isn't surprising due to his reputation (History.com).
Idi earned his reputation through the killing of about 500,000 people (History.com). He started off
by executing members of the Acholi and Lango tribes that had been loyal to Obote, and set up
agencies to eliminate anyone opposed to his regime. Within his rule he expelled Uganda's entire
Asian population, resulting in a collapse of the economy as manufacturing,

Lord's Resistance Army Essay
The Lord's Resistance Army insurgency is an ongoing guerrilla campaign that started in 1987. The
Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel group was led by Joseph Kony. Kony proclaims himself as the
"spokesperson" of god. His objective is to overthrow the Ugandan government, establishing a
theocratic state based on the Ten Commandments and Acholi tradition.
The early history of the rebellion began in January of 1987. Kony made his first appearance as a
spirit medium. The former Uganda People's Democratic Army commander Odong Latek played a
huge part in helping Kony rebel. Latek convinced him to adopt conventional guerrilla warfare
tactics. These were primarily surprise attacks on civilian targets. Kony wanted to prove the inability
of the government to protect their populace. In March of 1991, "Operation North" was presented.
This was a plan to destroy the LRA by cutting away its roots of support among the population
through heavy–handed tactics. The Minister Betty Oyella Bigombe, created "Arrow Groups"
generally armed with arrows, as a form of local defense. However, the LRA was armed with modern
weaponry, there for the groups were overpowered. In response to this particular operation the LRA
brutally harmed numerous Acholi people, to whom they thought to be government supporters.
Following Operation North, Bigombe initiated the first face–to–face meeting to settle the dispute
between representatives of the LRA and government. The LRA stated that they would not surrender,

The only thing that is worse than the bully is the bystander that watches silently as the innocent is
victimized. It is even more crucial to get involved when the bully is on a national scale and affecting
countless individuals. Kony brutally terrorizes victims that are unable to defend themselves without
foreign aid. The United States should take more action against Kony because of his strong influence
and beliefs in the LRA, the actions he has committed against humanity, and the way he has left
survivors scarred. Joseph Kony, born in Odek, Uganda in 1961, is a Ugandan rebel who leads the

The malicious Kony has ordered the "mass abductions of children" from villages in the Ugandan
countryside. The children abducted in raids and ambushes became the "living fuel for a war" (C. J.

the US to sit back and watch. Kony's religious beliefs influence his appalling tactics that he applies
to enhance his armed troops. The goal of the LRA is to install a government based on the Biblical
Ten Commandments. However, his methods of conquering the Ugandan government are immoral
and unethical. Kony claims that he was "told by God to kill his own impure people, because it says
so in the Ten Commandments" (Mike Pflanz). Kony believes that God is on his side aiding him
through his trials. Before going into battle, Kony tells his child soldiers that they must spread oil on
their bodies in a cross shape to be protected by the bullets since he believes in the literal protection
of the cross. Kony calls himself the Messiah and claims that he can connect to the spiritual world.
He goes through a routine that "includes dressing in a white robe, holding a bible, and having a glass
of water to dip his fingers" in so he can become possessed by the spirits (C. J. Chivers). Kony
believes that each individual spirit that enters his body has a separate personality. One in particular,

In 1972, Amin hurled a genocidal program to eradicate Uganda of its Lango and Acholi ethnic
groups. Amin also declared all citizens that may still be attached or loyal too Uganda's predecessor

Uganda that were unfaithful to him. He is quoted stating "You can't run faster than a bullet" in

powerful than he and intimidated with fear. He used his military background to fuel his tyrant

It's as if we don't exist. The government says the LRA are no longer a problem, but I know that's not
true. I beg of you, please talk to others about what has happened to us," said an eighty year old chief
struck by grief after the LRA killed his son. The LRA has committed many atrocities throughout
their existence, but one in particular stands out among the rest. On December 14, 2009 the LRA
entered the Haut Uele district of the Makombo area in the Democratic Republic of Congo ready to
kill. Over the course of four days, they attacked ten villages, killing 321 civilians and abducting over
250 people. At least eighty of the people abducted were children. Those who died were mostly adult
men, and they were found tied to trees where they had been hacked to death by machetes. Those
who lived, were tied up in chains and forced to carry the LRA's pillaged goods as they marched off
to attack more villages. People who did not comply with the LRA, tried to run away, or walked to
slow, were killed. Families were separated and many people had to watch as their loved ones were
killed. The attack on Makombo was one of the largest massacres committed by the LRA, but it was

Northern Uganda
There are claims that the government is actively trying to under–develop the north (Acker,p. 343).
Northern Uganda was mainly populated by the Acholi people, an ethnic group that comprises of
over a million people (Acker, p. 340). One of the largest impacts that the under–development of the
north was on the subsistence economy. In Africa, cattle is one of the most popular forms capital. In
the Gulu and Kitgum districts of northern Uganda, almost all of their cattle were taken during a time
of conflict between the government and the LRA. In the Kitgum region, the cattle population fell
from 156,667 to 3,239 in just 12 years, while at the same time, the national cattle population has
risen from 3 to 5.6 million in the same time period (Acker, p. 344). This downfall of the Ugandan
government to care for the north and the Acholi people lead for leaders like Lakwena and Kony to
emerge. Both of these leaders offered holistic solutions based on Acholi learnings, creating a social
hierarchy that mobilized the population (Acker, p. 345). Since the government was not supporting

repercussions (ICC 145). This shows a sense of reconciliation amongst the Ugandan people to those
members of the LRA, and an understanding if their situation. By 2004, more than 5000 former LRA
soldiers had applied for amnesty. Many of them took their story to main radio stations in the Gulu

Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, And Religion
Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism these are the different types of religions that exist
in our society. Religion is a prominent part of most people 's lives in our contemporary world.
Religion is a cultural system, in this system, there are different beliefs that are normally unique to
the religion. In most religions, there is a belief in spiritual beings also known as God. Many people
around the world practice their religion by following what is expected of them according to history
of the religion. Religion influences people and is a factor in shaping one 's perception. Virtually,
people tend to follow the rules of the religion they practice. With this our society will adopt these
ideas and this will be a factor in shaping one 's perceptions. Religion can also lead to stereotypes,
that create an title for people who are part of the religion. This stereotypes are not an accurate
representation of the people who practice this religion, and are just what some people perceive. An
example of religious stereotypes that exists in our society due to previous actions is that all Islamic
people are terrorists. Before I talk about this, I would like to state my opinion on this topic. I do not
believe that Islamic people are terrorist and I believe sadly our society are trying to blame it on
somebody. Islamic people are called terrorists because of the actions of other Islamic people in the

They carry messages to different camps and spy on government forces. Unfortunately, numerous
children are caught while on the job. Others surrender to the government and then are detained for
working for a rebel group, instead of being integrated back into a community. One of the major jobs
of a child soldier is being a troop. When armies recruit children, they make sure they are able to find
the most children in the most vulnerable places (Mancini 30). Ninety percent of the Lord's
Resistance Army are children (Mancini). Kids are sometimes forced to kill a family member or
watch them be killed. Most younger children are recruited as suicide bombers. Children do not get
stopped by armed forces when they run around a community. Therefore, they are able to bring out
any sort of attack ( Mancini 21). Children recruited as suicide bombers are easily influenced into
thinking that after they carry out their mission, they will go to heaven (25). One–third of child
troops in the world are girls (56). When girls are exposed to killing family members and abducting
other children, their girlhood is warped and relationships towards people change dramatically (58).
On the other hand, girls may experience pleasure while battling on the front line because they finally
feel equal to men. The girls that are not fighting on the battlefield are the "wives." They are the
children that are raped and prematurely give birth to kids whose

Hope And Ways Of Hope
[A] Hope is not a new concept in life. We all can have it and can lose it. [B] The person who has
hope, has the will and determination that goals will be achieved. Hope is sometimes taken for
granted and undervalued in society, but it is the bases on everything we do. We do not achieve
anything unless we have set goals to get there. We may not think we set goals, but we all do it. Even
if it is just small dreams in our minds. We don't have to write it out on a piece of paper for it to be a
goal. Hope, dreams, and goals are all linked together. The articles "How We Lose Hope and How
We Get It Back" and " The Will and Ways of Hope" help support hopes importance. The film, The
Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the novella Of Mice and Men, and the documentary ... Show more

[F] They are both working on a farm to try and make their dreams reality. When Candy finds out
about George's plan, he offers them three hundred dollars in order to be a part of it. This really
raised the level of hope for George and Lenny because then they would not have to work as long to
be able to accomplish buying a house. [G] From the article "How we Lose Hope and how we get it
back", it says, "If you or someone else is apathetic and are tired of dunning the rat race of life you
may be starting to lose hope.", from Scott Barry Kaufman [H] The raising of hope can allow people
to do better and keep trying, just like it did for George and Lenny. Once they started to get caught up
in all the problems of life; that's when they started to lose hope. [I] So, not just having hope, but
gaining more and keeping it will provide people with what they need to be successful and
accomplish great things. [J] To be able to achieve their dream, they had to set little goals to get
there. Lenny knew that he could not hurt anyone or else he would not be able to have any rabbits.
Therefore, Lenny's little goal was to not hurt anyone. Doing so, this gave hope to both George and
Lennie because if Lenny didn't hurt anyone then their dream might actually come true. [K] "Hope is
related to positive outcomes", from "The Will and Ways of Hope", by Joe Wilner [L] They raised
their hopes so high, it kept on helping and pushing them to get their goal accomplished. [M] They
were willing to work hard and complete the mini goals in order to achieve the big ones. If someone
has a goal but is not willing to work for it, then the goal will never be met. The goal being met is the
best outcome showing how successful they can be. [N] Overall, George and Lenny kept hope and
came closer to meeting their goal. Having reassuring hope pushed

Lord's Resistance Army Essay
The Lord's Resistance Army is one of the longest running and most violent armed groups in Africa.
The US State Department reports that it has been active since 1986, it was formed in northern
Uganda to fight Uganda's government. It has a sordid and violent history including the forcible
recruitment of over 66,000 children for both sex slaves and child soldiers. The longevity and
continued activity of the Lord's Resistance Army can be attributed to its leader, Joseph Kony.
The Lord's Resistance Army was created due in part to the Holy Spirit Movement which was
founded in the 1980's to represent the Acholi people of northern Uganda. Kony founded the L.R.A
in order to combat Uganda's government headed by President Yoweri Museveni.
The Lord's Resistance Army has never been a popular movement, it has never had the support of the
citizenry in the countries in which it operates. Although it was created in Uganda, it has operated in
the Central African Republic, Southern Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The
supposed mandate of the L.R.A when it was conceived was to create a theocratic style state in
Uganda based on the 10 commandments of the Bible.
The armed status of the L.R.A has been reduced to an almost insignificant amount, the Guardian
reported after being chased across the Nile in 2005 the L.R.A has maybe around a few hundred
fighters. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kony to this day states that he is a medium of spirits and is able to communicate with them. A report
by Lt. Col. Richard W. Skow detailed the spiritual beliefs of the L.R.A and the elaborate methods
that Kony went through in order to maintain his aura of control and mysticism over his troops.
Reported Skow: "To start the possession Kony would dip his fingers into a clear glass of water.
Multiple spirits would pass through Kony in a single session. On average at least three spirits would

William Golding 's Lord Of The Flies
World of Militant Governments How does being stranded on a remote island sparsely populated
with young boys who trying desperately to establish and maintain order reflect our society? In fact,
William Golding holds important messages for the reader about how the purpose and peril of
government remain relevant as metaphors of modern politics. Today, government substantially
influences our lives in many aspects for the better or in some instances for the worse. In Lord of the
Flies methods of control, propaganda, along with opposing militant governmental ideologies instill
fear upon the boys which eventually lead to their downfall. Military dictatorship is a form of
government wherein the political power resides with the military. Both in today's society and around
in past years militant governments all over the world fight for power. Likewise, Ralph and Jack
symbolize different types of government seeking power. Ralph symbolizes democracy. The boys
elect Ralph as leader. In addition, Ralph shares responsibilities with the other boys by leading by
example. Ralph has a vision, as much as a boy can have, of a functioning society. He even gives
Jack control of the hunting wing of government. Ralph evolves by utilizing the strengths of other
boys, like Simon and Piggy, to help develop a better society and perhaps get rescued. On the other
hand, Jack represents an autocratic dictatorship. He has no interest in society or rescue. For
example, Jack exclaims shortly after his first

Characteristics Of Oteka In War Brothers

  • 1. Characteristics Of Oteka In War Brothers In the book War Brothers (Sharon E. McKay), Oteka is constantly showing that his independence, dedication, and intelligence are his most powerful personality traits. Throughout the book, Oteka displays a great deal of independence. He spends a year raising money for a medicine man so he can speak to his mother. Oteka does this alone, without the help of friends or family. He simply relies on himself. He says: "The two five–thousand shilling notes that were folded tightly in his hand, added to the ninety thousand shillings he had hidden in his hut, would at least be enough. Begging, selling, working– it had taken him almost a year to collect this princely sum" (McKay 23). Oteka has lost his whole family to many different illnesses, and does not have any money left to him by his parents. His only friend/family is a woman named Adaa. She is old and is slowly growing blind, so Oteka cannot go to Adaa for help. On his own, he finds a way to raise ninety thousand shilling notes by working a job, selling, and begging on the streets. Another demonstration of Oteka's independence is when he buries his little sister, Esther. He also cares for his mother when no one else would. He recalls his past saying, "When Oteka's baby sister, Esther, died of twoo jonyo AIDS, Oteka alone buried her. As his beautiful mother grew weaker and weaker it was Oteka who bathed her and dripped water onto her parched tongue" (McKay 30). Oteka had waited for no one to bury his sister. He must have known that none of the villagers would go near her in fear of catching the disease. Nobody dared to go near or look after his mom because of the same reason. He did what needed to be done without being told, or asking assistance from anyone. Oteka's independence is what helps him move forward in life, He acts on his own without any influence. Other than showing independence, being dedicated is another key aspect to Oteka's character. When Oteka is warned by his mother's spirit of Kony, he thinks he should leave the displacement camp. However, he decides to keep his promise and care for Adaa instead. As he runs back toward the camp he determines: "The answer was in that– to stay and fulfill his obligation to the old woman and wait for a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Lord's Resistance Army Over 1.8 million people in Northern Uganda have been displaced, in fear of attacks from the Lord's Resistance Army, into internally displaced people's camps. This extremist group has been causing havoc in Northern Uganda by ransacking villages, kidnapping children, and brutally killing innocent people. Their violent acts are fueled by their radical religious beliefs. The notorious Joseph Kony founded the Lord's Resistance Army, also know as LRA, in 1986, with the intentions of creating a new government based on the Ten Commandments. Since 1986, he has created a powerful army of almost 3,000 soldiers, most of them who are children. They specifically target the Acholi people, an ethnic tribe located in Northern Uganda and some parts of Sudan. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The group's effects on the region are prevalent and easily noticeable, but it is important to consider the causes in order to really understand the issue. Uganda's unstable, harsh rulers, such as Idi Amin and Milton Obote, have caused many ethnic groups, like the Acholi, serious pain and oppression. Once this hatred toward the government is paired with radical Christian ideas, the LRA is going to cause a lot of damage through heinous actions that effect a swarm of people. The Lord's Resistance Army's power was infinite because did not face a lot of opposition within Uganda, and with outside sources, such as Sudan supporting it, it was able to be self–sufficient. Today, Uganda continues to face the harsh rebels, but since a viral internet campaign called "Kony 2012", the awareness for the issue amongst the rest of the world increased dramatically. Even though the campaign itself ended up being a flop, it raised concern and the Ugandan government made a huge push to combat the issue. Although Kony has not been caught, it is estimated that he now only has several hundred fighters, all of whom live in the bush and do not attack villages as often. There is still a lot of progress to be made, especially with helping the families recover from their losses, but there has been a large wave of aid organizations who have been working towards mending the wound in Northern Uganda. • 5. Life of Idi Amin Essay Idi Amin was a soldier first and foremost. He imposed a scheduled and militaristic way of life on his followers. His own military record paints the picture of his rise to power. During British colonization of Uganda Idi Amin began his endeavor into the military. It was in 1946 that Amin enlisted in the King's African Rifle's, KAR, the British army in colonized Africa. (Boddy–Evans) Upon his entry he was placed as assistant cook, a far from glorious position. However he managed to rise through the ranks. He became a Corporal in 1948 and was stationed in Burma, Somalia, and Kenya. This was during the British situation in Kenya that was referred to as the Mau Mau revolt. The Mau Mau gunmen were a secret society of rebels which aimed to over ... Secondly he performed a coup because he acknowledged that he was capable of gaining a higher status of power. Though there were some attempts on Amin's administration he remained in office from 1971–1979. (Boddy–Evans) Idi Amin's time in office was seen as the bloodiest times in his countries history. Like most dictators he ruled with fear. His crimes against humanity are well documented and anything that isn't is still spread through word of mouth. It was these erratic actions that lead to the downfall of the Ugandan economy. (Idi Amin Killer File) Obote, the man Amin helped into power prior to his own coup, had a positive effect on the economy. Obote declared a strong national economy with little foreign dependence. Unlike Amin's administration, these types of statements were not propaganda. In the years of Obote's financial independence there was an 11% GDP growth in the economy. However Amin's administration left the country at a negative 0.6% GDP. (Luganda) Amin was welcomed by most western states such as the United Kingdom and Israel. • 7. Lassa Fever Chapter Summary Beginning from Prehistory, the author mentions that once upon a time when there were no diseases. Life spans were much longer than those we appreciate today, there was no suffering. Then the disaster struck, the oldest bacteria found at the Strelley Pool Chert in Pilbara, Western Australia is around 3.4 billion years old. The fossilized bones of a mother and child, dating from around 8,000 BC found which demonstrates the presence of tuberculosis from that long period of time. According to the historian Manetho of Sebennytos (fl. third century BC), the earliest recorded epidemic occurred in 3180 BC in Egypt. One of these is Marburg virus, the symptoms of the strange disease progressed from the initial flu– like stage to acute viremia. The World Health Organization gave Marburg it's highest rating in its risk group categorization of disease. There is no cure for this disease at this moment. In between the two Ugandan and Rhodesian outbreaks of Marburg, another new disease appeared on 12 January 1969 known as Lassa fever symptoms include bad back, sore throat, irregular heartbeats and unusual clotting. The next major outbreak in Africa is Ebola. After further outbreaks in Zaire and Sudan, Ebola had effectively disappeared by 1979. In 2007, the Bundibugyo ebolavirus emerged in Uganda. The two original strains of the disease have remained active. The 2014 outbreak of Ebola was the worst yet recorded and marked the first time the disease has reached epidemic proportions. It appears to be conceivable that Ebola has been spreading through the bat colonies of central and West Africa for decades, mutating as it goes. What number of bats are tainted, nobody knows. As to where it will strike next, that too is obscure and researchers still don't know precisely how Ebola kills people. The most likelihood course is by causing the immune system breakdown, and afterward flooding the body with replicating viruses. Besides this several another disease also threatens humanity, such as Nipah virus, SARS, mad cow disease, bird flu, anthrax and much more. The author also mentions that adjacent to these new diseases, some older diseases are making a round back such as cholera, diphtheria, genital herpes, giardiasis, viral hepatitis, malaria, measles, pertussis, pneumonic plague, syphilis, tuberculosis and viral encephalitis. • 9. Essay on The Impact of Sanctions on Idi Amin's... From the time Idi Amin came to power in Uganda until the time his regime fell, his brutal rule negatively impacted Uganda in every aspect of its existence. In 1971, Idi Amin along with military support, ousted Prime Minister Milton Obote while he was out of the country in Singapore attending a Commonwealth summit meeting with many other leaders of African and European countries. Over the course of his violent reign, Idi Amin killed between 100,000 and 300,000 of his own people and doomed the economy with the expulsion of those of Asian nationality. Many of his victims were killed for no reason, or for a very insignificant action. Amin was in power from 1971 to 1979 and proved early into his dictatorship that he was very powerful. Only one ... Not only did Amin harm Uganda by killing a lot of its population, he also was the cause of an almost complete economic collapse, when, in 1972, he declared an "economic war" on the Asian population in Uganda. Uganda's economy relied heavily on its Asian population because they ran most of the manufacturing and trade sectors as well as making up a large portion of the civil service. Amin's order of expulsion for the Asian population gave them three months to exit Uganda. They were given British passports and the businesses they left behind were turned over to Amin's supporters. Amin not only decimated the population of Uganda during his despotic reign but caused the economy to falter and fail as well. As his reign of terror went on, news of Amin's crimes and atrocities began surfacing internationally, spurring retaliatory actions from countries all over the world. The United States as well as the United Kingdom, Japan, France, the Netherlands, and West Germany played a large role in Uganda's trading by being the largest exporters of their coffee. The United States exported the most, being responsible for 75% of all the coffee exported by Uganda. • 11. The Death Toll Of The Genocide The crime of committing, destroying, or trying to destroy the existence of a group of people because of their racial (whose identity is defined by physical), national (whose identity is defined by a common country of nationality or national origin), ethnic (whose identity is defined by physical characteristics), or religious group (whose identity is defined by common religious creeds, beliefs, practices, or rituals), is known as genocide, and this term did not exist before 1944. Usually the death toll of the genocide is in thousands and in some cases in millions. According to the Canadian scholars, Frank Chalk and Kurt Jonassohn, they have identified four main types of genocide: first, Ideological: this type of genocide is committed in an effort to achieve an ideal social structure in which all members of society are alike or hold the same belief. For example the Armenian genocide in 1915, when the leaders of the Turkish government killed over 1.5 millions of Turkey's Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire. The Lord 's Resistance Army started when Joseph Kony took over the Holy Spirit Movement, and founded the LRA. The LRA is an army focused on overthrowing the Ugandan government and replacing it with a government rule using the 10 commandments. The LRA has committed constant Human Rights on the citizens of Uganda over the last thirty years. The LRA has kidnapped over 25 thousand children (boys and girls) and forced them to join the LRA. Without a clear objective Joseph Kony rebranded the movement from the Holy Spirit Movement to the Lord's Resistance Army(LRA). Joseph Kony intended to take over the Ugandan Government and run the country based on the Christian ten Commandments. Kony's movement quickly lost support, so he started abducting children to increase the popularity and dominance, thus starting the Human Rights Violations. The Children once kidnapped would be turned into soldiers (boys) or sex slaves(girls). Joseph Kony made it a point of his invasions to violate the basic human rights of the kidnapees as well as their families. The attacks were often without a purpose, only to assert dominance over the rest of the population(War Child, Linton House). The Soldiers would masquerade as military soldiers, or other trusted figures, or wait until the majority of villagers were in one gathered space, and launch their ruthless attacks. The Soldiers would kidnap those who they thought could be useful, and kill those who did not have a significant up side. • 18. Essay On Lord's Resistance Army The Lord's Resistance Army The Lord's Resistance Army began as The Holy Spirit movement in the 1980's which was guided by Alice Lakwena. Alice believed that she was lead by the Holy Spirit to overthrow the Ugandan government because of their abuse to the Acholi people. People quickly joined the resistance out of their hatred of the Ugandan government. The movement continued to grow until they lost a battle to the government which eventually lead to the capture of Alice. The movement lacked leadership until Alice's supposedly cousin Joseph Kony took over. In the late 80's Joseph Kony renamed the movement to The Lord's Resistance Army. He based the resistance on overthrowing the government and base his government on the Ten Commandments. The movement earned their status by their acts of violence. Their goal was to overthrow the Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni. Kony ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, looking back at the holy texts of various religions provides no answers. The concept of 'Jihad' was used in order to justify the fight for the 'injustice of poverty' (not fight towards non–believers). When a subsequent Khalifah, Bakr was selected, many were claiming themselves the subsequent prophet after Prophet Muhammad. In order to gain recognition and achieve unity in the Islamic world, he launched wars to the surrounding areas. The conquest was continued by his successors as the expansion of power contributed to the accumulation of wealth and talent, finally constituting the grand Islamic civilisation. During that time, the Christians and other believers lived peacefully with the Muslims, paid tax and were well protected.3 These series of 'Jihad' depicted the natural rise of a civilisation, like any other civilisations in the world history. They do not fit in the usual conception of 'religious wars' that one has in mind, which are battles with explicit aim to exterminate other religions. Subsequently, in the 11th century in Europe, the crusades were summoned by Pope Urban II, to free Jerusalem from Seljuk Turks, who harassed peaceful Christian pilgrims to the holy land. The war ended after the explicit aim of freeing Jerusalem was achieved. The subsequent crusades in the region were mainly due to the struggle for dominance between Islamic and Christian powers after the establishment of Christian Kingdoms to harvest riches following the victory of the first crusade.4 Hence the very first war ... • 28. Ethnic Conflicts And Its Effects On Post Colonial Societies Today, it is hard to imagine how only sixty years ago the world was dominated by European empires. In 1921, 84 percent of the earth's surface had been colonised since the sixteenth century. There were as many as 168 colonies. By the 1960s, after years of fighting, most Western colonial territories had gained independence. The following decades showed how much the ghost of colonisation still loomed over post–colonial societies though. Around the world today, conflict is found in many areas that were once colonised or controlled by Western European powers. The cause of many of these continuing and uncontrollable conflicts lies in past colonial policies, especially those regarding territorial boundaries, the treatment of indigenous people, the privileging of some groups over others, the unequal distribution of wealth and resources, local governmental infrastructures, and the formation of non–democratic or non–participatory governmental systems. It is therefore essential, if one wants to understand the causes of these ethnic conflicts, to examine not only the contemporary issues, but also important historical factors such as past colonial policies and their lingering effects. Colonisation was motivated by the European hunger for African resources. The subsequent exploitation of the African people and the uprooting of their spiritual values by Christian missionaries would leave a permanent European stamp on the continent. Colonial states often promoted ethnic rivalry by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Kony Under the leadership of Joseph Kony, the LRA has become increasingly violent, often towards the Acholi people, who they claim to protect. Kony uses scriptures taken from the Pentateuch to convince his followers that they are doing the will of God by murdering and mutilating innocent people. The connection between different types of development is often an important part of this research as well. Political and economic development in Uganda based on these terms provides a strong case for the relationship between the two. The lack of political development in Uganda since independence from Britain in 1962 has hindered economic development and it was not until recent political stability that Uganda has been able to experience any sort of economic development. To understand the political development in Uganda, it is important to start shortly before 1962 to examine the political atmosphere of independence. Under the colonial system, Uganda was a protectorate, meaning that land rights of Africans were respected, despite the commonplace of forced labor and high taxes. In 1961 Uganda was granted self–rule before gaining full independence in 1962. With the granting of self–rule, three major political parties formed, the Uganda People's Congress (UPC), the Democratic Party (DP) and the Kabaka Yekka (KY). The main platform of the UPC was nationalist and the party strived to unite all Ugandans despite ethnic differences. The KY was mainly an ethnic party consisting of the Baganda people who were the most favored under British rule. An alliance between the UPC and KY gave them more collective strength than the DP and increased the political power of Milton Obote. A person who abuses such power is considered a dictator, tyrant, despot, etc. These dictators typically rule through fear, and don't usually win the hearts of many. They will do whatever it takes to stay in power over the country that they rule. One such ruler is named Idi Amin. Idi was a ruler who abused his power and saw himself as someone who was a man of influence. Idi Amin was born on 1925 in Koboka, Uganda (History.com). • 44. Lord's Resistance Army Essay The Lord's Resistance Army insurgency is an ongoing guerrilla campaign that started in 1987. The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel group was led by Joseph Kony. Kony proclaims himself as the "spokesperson" of god. His objective is to overthrow the Ugandan government, establishing a theocratic state based on the Ten Commandments and Acholi tradition. The early history of the rebellion began in January of 1987. Kony made his first appearance as a spirit medium. The former Uganda People's Democratic Army commander Odong Latek played a huge part in helping Kony rebel. Latek convinced him to adopt conventional guerrilla warfare tactics. These were primarily surprise attacks on civilian targets. Kony wanted to prove the inability of the government to protect their populace. In March of 1991, "Operation North" was presented. This was a plan to destroy the LRA by cutting away its roots of support among the population through heavy–handed tactics. The Minister Betty Oyella Bigombe, created "Arrow Groups" generally armed with arrows, as a form of local defense. However, the LRA was armed with modern weaponry, there for the groups were overpowered. In response to this particular operation the LRA brutally harmed numerous Acholi people, to whom they thought to be government supporters. Following Operation North, Bigombe initiated the first face–to–face meeting to settle the dispute between representatives of the LRA and government. Joseph Kony is the leader of a rebel group called the Lord's Resistance Army. The LRA began in 1986 under the rule of Alice Lakwena and was called the Holy Spirit Movement. The LRA has committed many atrocities throughout their existence, but one in particular stands out among the rest. On December 14, 2009 the LRA entered the Haut Uele district of the Makombo area in the Democratic Republic of Congo ready to kill. Over the course of four days, they attacked ten villages, killing 321 civilians and abducting over 250 people. At least eighty of the people abducted were children. Those who died were mostly adult men, and they were found tied to trees where they had been hacked to death by machetes. Those who lived, were tied up in chains and forced to carry the LRA's pillaged goods as they marched off to attack more villages. People who did not comply with the LRA, tried to run away, or walked to slow, were killed. Families were separated and many people had to watch as their loved ones were killed. The attack on Makombo was one of the largest massacres committed by the LRA, but it was not the only attack. • 52. Northern Uganda There are claims that the government is actively trying to under–develop the north (Acker,p. 343). Northern Uganda was mainly populated by the Acholi people, an ethnic group that comprises of over a million people (Acker, p. 340). One of the largest impacts that the under–development of the north was on the subsistence economy. In Africa, cattle is one of the most popular forms capital. In the Gulu and Kitgum districts of northern Uganda, almost all of their cattle were taken during a time of conflict between the government and the LRA. In the Kitgum region, the cattle population fell from 156,667 to 3,239 in just 12 years, while at the same time, the national cattle population has risen from 3 to 5.6 million in the same time period (Acker, p. 344). This downfall of the Ugandan government to care for the north and the Acholi people lead for leaders like Lakwena and Kony to emerge. Both of these leaders offered holistic solutions based on Acholi learnings, creating a social hierarchy that mobilized the population (Acker, p. 345). This shows a sense of reconciliation amongst the Ugandan people to those members of the LRA, and an understanding if their situation. By 2004, more than 5000 former LRA soldiers had applied for amnesty. Many of them took their story to main radio stations in the Gulu district in order to encourage others to apply (ICC, 145). Up until 2006 the LRA had shown no interest in peace negotiations. The first peace negotiations were named the Juba Peace Talks as they were held in Juba, Sudan. Sadly, it is believed that during the negotiations Kony ordered his troops to destroy villages and abduct children in the Democratic Republic Congo. In August, 2006, a Cessation of Hostilities agreement was signed by Uganda and the LRA. Kony sent someone in his place to delegate but when it was time to officially sign the document he would continuously postpone the date or not show up. Some believe Kony only entered the peace talks in order to regroup and rest considering the entire time the LRA was provided with food, clothes, and medicine as a good gesture. When it became obvious that Kony would not sign the treaty Operation Lightning Thunder was launched, a coordinated effort of Uganda, DO of Congo, the Central African Republic, and Sudan, along with intelligence and logistical support from the USA. The US State Department reports that it has been active since 1986, it was formed in northern Uganda to fight Uganda's government. It has a sordid and violent history including the forcible recruitment of over 66,000 children for both sex slaves and child soldiers. The longevity and continued activity of the Lord's Resistance Army can be attributed to its leader, Joseph Kony. The Lord's Resistance Army was created due in part to the Holy Spirit Movement which was founded in the 1980's to represent the Acholi people of northern Uganda. Kony founded the L.R.A in order to combat Uganda's government headed by President Yoweri Museveni. In fact, William Golding holds important messages for the reader about how the purpose and peril of government remain relevant as metaphors of modern politics. Today, government substantially influences our lives in many aspects for the better or in some instances for the worse. In Lord of the Flies methods of control, propaganda, along with opposing militant governmental ideologies instill fear upon the boys which eventually lead to their downfall.
