Oranges Stan Analysis
In his essay, Stan tells the story of Christmas Eve in 1989 shortly after the Romanian revolution, and the sacrifice he made for his eight–year–old
brother. Before Stan even thought about the sacrifice, he was heading to the movie theater with a few friends. They heard oranges were available for
purchase today, and Stan starts thinking about oranges for Christmas. Hundreds of people are willing to wait in line for just one orange, a very rare treat
in war–torn Romania. Next, Stan changed his mind about the movie and decided to amaze his younger brother with oranges. The younger brother has
never seen or touched an orange before. It was an incredible sight, seeing boxes of oranges stacked as tall as Stan at the rear entrance of the grocery
market. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, there are the small sacrifices or good deed we do on a daily basis. A friendly smile or word can make the stressed out cashier at Stater Bros
realize that they are appreciated. Letting your spouse have the last Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookie, shows him that you love him, but also that
you care for him. Next, are the sacrifices that require planning ahead. Helping at the Knights of Columbus spaghetti dinner on the first Saturday in
November requires me to request the day off from work. Weeks before the event I create the flyers to advertise the spaghetti dinner to the
Victorville community and make changes and revisions as needed. We purchase eight tickets ahead of time to invite friends to the dinner and
support the fundraiser. The fundraiser helps the disadvantaged youth of Saint Joan of Arc join the catechism program. The day of the dinner, my
husband Guy and I use 33 loaves of French bread to make garlic bread for all the guests. Without a doubt the enormous sacrifices we make are the
most rewarding. Being a parent is one of the greatest sacrifices made by ordinary people. When my son Guy was born, there was nothing in the
world that could have prepared me of the joy I was feeling. While my children were minors, my life revolved around them. I worked the graveyard shift
so I could be home when my daughter Stella had a bad day at school. I coached basketball for three years while they both played. I worked at the

Stan Grant's 'Australian Dream'
The purpose of a text is driven by the context which determines the tone and structure. Stan Grant's "Australian Dream" debate and Wallace Wurth
lecture differ in context, causing great contrast, while retaining the same purpose, exposing the unjust treatment of Indigenous Australians. The Wallace
Wurth lecture occurred soon after the abusive treatment of Aboriginal youth in the Din Dale juvenile facility was divulged to the public. Grant's
vexation is conveyed through his harsh tone and emotive language. The "Australian Dream" debate is more neutral. According to Grant, the Australian
Dream was built on the backs of his people. Both speeches share a powerful call to action and a well defined tonality.
The foundation of Stan Grant's speeches is the context in which they were written. Grant's Wallace Wurth lecture occurred shortly after the exposure of
the horrendous treatment of Aboriginal youth in detention centres. "This week Australia is a boy strapped to a chair. This week Australia is aboriginal
boys tear gassed, locked down and beaten." A cry was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the "Australian Dream" debate Grant is composed, despite the use of personal anecdotes, his words are smooth and flow easily creating an
engaging speech. Grant's voice is kept respectful, calling for action without demanding it. Passion can still be heard in his voice, passion for his
people and for his cause, but he does not let this take over. It is also clear that what he is discussing, the injustice that has been thrust upon the
Aboriginal people, specifically that of his relatives, does cause him pain but it is shrouded. There is no urgency to this speech, while it is still
important. This debate was not planned because of a source of outrage, simply a debate to make arguments known, it is due to this that Grant has kept
himself composed throughout the

Analyzing Eminem's Song 'Stan'
I think it depends on the individual choice. In today's audience, it is no secret that vocal music dominates overall. When we listen to vocal music,
the mood of the song can have you feeling one way and suddenly have you feeling another way. Eminem's song "Stan" is a perfect example. The
song has a fan writing a letter to Eminem. In the beginning, he tells Eminem how much of a big fan he was to him and has been trying to get it
contact with him, while also telling him about his life and feeling sorry about the loss of one of Eminem relatives, but by the end of the song he is hurt
and mad that Eminem never responded to him. Unfortunately, he takes his and his child's mother life. The lyrics can take you up and down in vocal
music. Online radio

struggled because Stan's dad struggled with alcoholism. Stans mother put in long hard hours as a domestic worker and the family often relied on

used salesmanship, the personal touch. Where other wrote, they talked. Where others waited, they acted. That early bird that got the worm must
have been a redbird." When he retired he said "if I had to do it all over again he would've went to college before he went and played professional

Spider Man Stan Lee Quotes
Quote: With great power comes great responsibility. That quote came from the Spider–Man comic books but is most famous for the movie Spider–Man
in 2002. But it has quite a bit of meaning. It is telling you that if you have power over something you need responsibility to control that power. When
Stan Lee made Spider–Man he knew he would have to have a special quote that would run through the whole series. When Stan Lee first started
making the comics into what he wanted to see, and people loved it! Stan Lee completely changed the way comics were made, I guess you could
say that Stan Lee could have changed the world too. When Stan Lee made the comics and then the movies about his heroes, it gave people
inspiration to be able to do things they were to scared or they thought were not possible before. Just about everywhere you look you see something
from marvel something about his heroes. I believe that Stan Lee changed the way people saw the world. And maybe how people saw each other. Stan
Lee changed the world with his heroes, and he can change you too.

Stan Lee loved to read and some of his favorite authors were Stephen King , H.G Wells, Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle, William Shakespeare,
Charles Dickens, Harlan Ellison and many more. Stan Lee was the older brother of Larry Lieber. When his mom died later on during the great
depression, Stan Lee had a lot of responsibility when he was in charge of his brother. Stan Lee never really played outside either because the weather
was often bad. He mostly just stayed in his house and read books that he really liked. Maybe the early reading influenced his career in making comic
books later in life.

Comic Books, By Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, And Frank Millar
There will always be entertainment and in the 1960's comic books ruled the entertainment industry, and even now they dominate as comic book
movies. The worlds created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Frank Millar have become pop culture and people across the world have gazed upon this
form of art and literature combined. The protectors of the universe, as powerful as they can be, are missing one key component, the universe. The
issue that comic books have not been as diverse as the world they protect is, has been raised many times and the controversy has been mostly
addressed. The ways in which they have been addressed has caused even more controversy. The argument has many to believe that anyone can relate to

The comic book is a way in which so many have taken to reading and observing art, and it has changed throughout the years. In the 1930's and 40's a
child of color or even a girl would be able to find someone who looked like them in the comic books they purchased. They were to read Superman and
Batman, with whom both were well–off and white. They had to read these characters in order to get their entertainment before televisions became
popular. In the 50's the comic books were still white dominated, however, a female hero was introduced as Wonder Woman. That was the status quo
until 1966 when Black Panther was introduced. The mainstream comic scene was changed and he was followed by Falcon, Storm, and Luke Cage.
That was a changing point and yet many argue that there is still not enough representation of minorities in comic books. The support for more diverse
characters is noticeable in an article by Matthew J. Smith Ph.D. written for The Washington Post. The article titled A Brief History of Racial and
Gender Diversity in Comic Books Movies is where he makes his point that the need for more diverse characters in entertainment such as comic books
and their motion picture counterparts. In the article he argues that most of the population wants what they see to represent them fully. However, he
acknowledges there are many characteristics that hold true with the minority groups, such as growing up in Brooklyn and

Violence In Stan Lee's Dr. Strange
Silver age comics were steeped in the conservative nature of the 50s, even the edgier Marvel comics fell into this trap and Dr. Strange is no
exception. Stan Lee's Dr. Strange, though he wears a cape, is no golden age Superman. Instead, he is a conservative man who answers to a greater
vow to aid all humanity regardless of the cost to himself, who just happens to get along with local law enforcement. There are four main things in the
Dr. Strange comics that set them apart from the golden age comics, the first is the conservative nature of the conflict seen, even in the "greatest battles
ever seen" no one is truly hurt, the second is the lack of corporate or harden criminals who need to be taught a lesson, instead the criminals introduced in

Strange finds himself faced with also differ from the golden age criminals. Instead of committing violent crimes or being a part of organized crime that
put others in danger they are petty criminals such a thieves, or guilt–ridden men. Even as these men commit the crimes seen in the comics they are
wholesome criminals. For example, in issue 110 When Dr. Strange is faced with a man haunted by nightmares and guilt about robbing a man,
Strange agreed to help the man stop his nightmares as he was not yet aware of their cause. As Dr. Strange attempted to help the man he was
trapped in a trance. The man then attempted to kill Strange to prevent him from telling the authorities but, Strange easily subdued the man once
he awoke from his trance. Faced with his guilt the man clamed "it's over! You're alive, that means I've lost." (Dr. Strange 110, 5) The man
concluded that his escape was improbable, therefore deciding it was best to surrender and claim "now I'll confess." (Dr. Strange 110, 5) In a later
issue Strange is faced with Two thieves' who steal a gem and get transported to the Purple dimension and become slaves. Not only is the issue of
slavery addressed as being fundamentally wrong, as Dr. Strange makes it so Aggamon can only regain his strength by letting people go, but the
criminals once saved realize the error of their ways and turn themselves into the police (Dr. Strange 119, 8). "They said they wanted to serve time, pay

evidence relies on his faith, which is entirely objective. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed Coppinger's squirrel analogy. Prior to this reading, I never

Stan Kenton: Progressive Concepts in Jazz
Stanley Newcomb Kenton is one of the most influential figures to be found in all of jazz history, even being called "the most significant figure of the
Modern Jazz age" by Frank Sinatra (Agostinelli, 6). Kenton's progressive concepts of how music is written and performed greatly affected the genre of
jazz, and created something new and unique. Always under controversy, Kenton and his band always strove to do something different, never settling
into a niche for long periods of time. Even today, when hearing modern jazz performers (particularly big bands) one can often hear the influence from
Kenton's music.
Kenton was born in Wichita, Kansas on December 11, 1911, although he spent most of his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The standard big band sound of the late 1940s and 1950s was very laid back. Rhythmically, it was normal to play just behind the beat to create this
relaxed feel, with a definite emphasis on the "swing" style. Swing music was usually composed of one melody played by one section of the band, and
other sections, if playing at all, would play chord hits in different places. The function of the rhythm section is mostly to comp and stay out of the way.
These bands usually stayed within either 3/4, 4/4, 2/2, or 2/4 time signatures. Kenton altered this system in many ways to create something fresh and
progressive.
Kenton's sound was more aggressive and even occasionally more abrasive than of other bands. The saxophones played strongly, with screaming
trumpets, and a lush, rich trombone sound. One aspect that made the Kenton charts different from others was the layering techniques used within the
band. This would involve one section of the band playing a melody. Then another section would play a different melody over top of the first one. Both
would compliment each other rhythmically and harmonically. This process could then continue, adding more lines. When extracted, each line is still
interesting by itself. The best example of layering in the Kenton library is "Artistry in Rhythm." This tune begins with the rhythm section playing a riff
over which the sax section plays the main melody

The atmosphere of World War II helped enhance Lee's writing because it led to the debut of Captain America Issue #3 in 1941 with the help of Joe
Simon and Jack Kirby. Lee used elements of the war and incorporated it into his work. The controversy and calamity of the war made Lee's Captain
America a prominent figure during the war period because he epitomized anti–Nazism in an unexpressed interventionist tone (Wright 474). Lee
constructed a tone towards Captain America, which pledged to wage war against the enemies who were a threat to justice not only home in America
but also out of the country. With this tone, Lee's work had the most attention in the World War II years. The influence of the war in Lee's work,
however, led to some criticism. The ideology that Lee's Captain America held wasn't viewed properly by political groups of other countries at the
time, but Lee found reverence from young readers who idolized patriotism. At the time, Marvel Comics was called Timely Comics, and Timely Comics
became the first comic book company to publish anti–Nazi stories. After World War II transitioned to the Cold War, America and the Soviet Union had
high tensions between one another, and the feeling of uncertainty grew amongst the two nations. Lee used the high tension and uncertainty America
faced with the Soviet Union, and incorporated them into his writing. Lee's style of writing

Stan Musial
Stan Musial (born 1920), one of baseball's greatest hitters, enjoyed an extraordinary career with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1941 through 1963. Called
"Stan the Man" because of his intimidating presence at the plate, Musial won seven batting championships and three Most Valuable Player awards.
Accommodating to fans and the media both during and after his playing career, Musial was considered one of the game's most gentlemanly and
down–to–earth ambassadors. He came from rural Pennsylvania, never graduated from high school, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"They horsed around more, cut up with hillbilly songs and musical instruments. ... I never had the courage to try my harmonica outside my hotel room,
but I could make my share of noise with that slide whistle and coat hanger. I always thought it helped to laugh it up before a game, not to become too
tense."
Led by Musial's hot bat, the loose, inexperienced Cardinals surprised everyone by winning 106 games, including 43 of their last 52, to claim the
National League pennant. Then St. Louis beat the favored Yankees in the World Series, and Musial was on a world championship team in his first full
season.
Musial was disliked by Brooklyn Dodgers' fans, who bestowed his nickname. Groaning when he came up to bat in key situations, they would yell:
"Oh no. Here comes that Man again." From then on, he was always "Stan the Man." Musial didn't find out till after he retired that Dodgers' shortstop,
Pee Wee Reese, often used to steal his bat before games.
Musial had an unorthodox batting stance. He crouched down to make the strike zone smaller, held his hands back until the last possible instant, and
punched many of his hits the opposite way. "A lot of guys saw my hitting style and said I'd never hit in the big leagues," Musial recalled. In fact,
Musial feasted on all types of pitching. "I learned early to hit the curveball," Musial wrote in his

"With great power comes great responsibility." It's a quote everyone has heard in their life time, and this man is the mastermind behind the phrase. In
Stan Lee's case he may have created the catchy line as a one off for a character, but never would he of expected to have it end up in dozens of movies
and tv shows spanning decades. Stanley Martin Lieber, later legally changed to his pseudonym name Stan Lee, is the creator of some of the worlds
most recognizable and profitable characters and franchises on the planet to this day through Marvel Comics. To name just a few of these marvelous

Jack Kirby and Joe Simon briefly decide to leave the company. This gives Stan Lee free range to create characters and story lines as he pleases.
After a long gray period of watered down comics that people were not enjoying reading or creating Lee makes a bold move based on the opinion of
his wife, Joan Lee, who sees how much they are struggling. He pushes his higher ups to allow him to start producing comics outside the CCA. They
hesitantly allow him to try this risky business move. This turns out to be just the step Timely needed as it saved them from bankruptcy.Fantastic Four is
published pushing them out in front of their only leading competitor DC for the first time in history. The success of Fantastic Four brings upon the
X–Men, Hulk, Iron Man, and the rise of multi cultural/ethnic characters to the comic world. Timely promptly rebrands to Marvel Comics, and the
Silver Age of Comics comes to a close and the Bronze Age begins. The Bronze Age (1970's/1985') restored the comic culture to America and slowly
began spreading around the globe as well. As they evolved Stan Lee pushed boundaries right along with it. Lee is largely credited for being the person
who re–envisioned the very structure of how heroes are portrayed and wrote. He strongly believed the character under the mask is just as or more
important than the hero itself. This shift in direction changed the entire way visual story telling was perceived at the time. Now characters weren't just
super, they were human too. Relatable people with struggles, relationships, and even everyday jobs. He also strived to set the majority of Marvels
stories in the real world and not in fictional settings. This allowed for relatable fathomable individuals and the creation of Marvels biggest triumph

"Love what you do and do what you love." – Ray Bradbury. Stan Witty, my grandfather, was an extremely determined man. But he was always

paying someone to do it for him. He had a very strong work ethic and did what it took to pursue his interests and passion.

his childhood. During his childhood his whole family contributed to his current issues. His mother shattered his view of women due to the fact she

Also, Stan was in the shadows of his two brothers and one sister. He was the "black sheep" of the family and his parents let him know that with

Although basic goals are set forth by our parents at an early age, it is during the time of adolescences that we start to narrow these goals for
ourselves. As we start to make decisions for ourselves, we will narrow these goals to fit what we want out of life. In the case with Stan, it will be
useful to structure the six sessions in such a way that he gradually feels himself just as normal as everyone else is, so that his feeling of inferiority
is terminated. We will need to convenience Stan that his success depends solely on himself; by clear vision of possible future success, Stan will
get rid of his inferiority complex. Technically, in order to make Stan feel successful, we will need to capitalize on his strengths and achievements,
no matter how scarce they are. Adlerians believe that this path to reach these goals is very important. If problems are encountered in trying to reach
the goals, it can cause maladjustment and psychosocial problems. The term fictional finalism refers to an imagined central goal that guides a
person's behavior (Corey, 2005). For instance, setting goals for doing well on exams in a particular class may help achieve the bigger goal of
graduating and getting a degree. Therefore behavior is defined in the contexts as we try to reach the goals whether small or big. One of the most
important concepts I find useful for Stan in Adlerian therapy is the term lifestyle. Lifestyle refers to an individual's basic orientation to life, or one's

The film Meet the Stans largely portrays Kazakhstan as a country trying to find its identity. The start of the film shows scientists opening up vials of

Film Analysis Of Mothlight, By Stan Brakhage
Mothlight, by Stan Brakhage, is also a film heavily focused on the visuals. Released in 1963, Mothlight's running time of four minutes consists of
nothing but what look like pictures of winged insects and foliage. Further investigation reveals that Brakhage created the film without a camera, and
instead used two strips of splicing tape to press the object enough to emit light through it (Braunstein 285). No viewer of Mothlight will stop to
wonder about a conceivable plot the film could be trying to convey. The film itself does not express that there is a plot to be perceived. Instead,
audiences view the visuals and think only about the visuals because it is the only thing being presented. Once the connection to the title of the film is
made, the next natural question to ask is "How?" The question is no longer directed at the screen in which the film is being projected. Instead, the
question becomes about the physical objects being presented. Brakhage was able to use film to show or emphasize a part of nature one might not have
taken a second to observe. By directing attention to film as a physical object, Brakhage used Mothlight to enlighten audiences with a unique technique
to showcase the visuals of film. A Movie and Mothlight are both subverting preconceptions of mainstream cinema at the time, but they both do so by
calling the audience's attention to the film medium. A Movie puts effort into directly reminding audiences that it is a film while Mothlight gets

Reviving Opheli Saving The Selves Of Adolescent Girls
While reading Mary Pipher's, "Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls" and Dan Kindlon and Michael Thompson's, "Raising Cain:
Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys," I got a better understanding of the mindsets of teenagers in todays society. I learned that countless girls and
boys have the same inner battles and do not even realize it. The two songs I chose that best represent ideas of woman and manhood are "Unpretty," by
TLC and "Stan," by Eminem. I believe these songs support many of the stereotypes portrayed in both of the class readings and hold strong messages
that can impact the views of girls and boys alike. They address many struggles that teenagers today may be going through but afraid of speaking about
openly.
In Reviving Ophelia, Pipher takes us into the minds of teenage girls and evaluates the ordinary troubles they encounter. She explains how girls tend to
let the opinions of others influence their interests and appearance. They visualize how others perceive them and based on this, they form a
self–perception. This perception can either be a positive or negative one. Generally if a girl establishes a negative self–perception, they have an urge to
alter whom they are to gain approval. They crave acceptance from others so much that they usually through great lengths to get it. The problem is that
many girls don't accept themselves for whom they are and "Unpretty" speaks to those girls in particular. The song is by the popular 90's R&B group

Oranges Stan Analysis

  • 1. Oranges Stan Analysis In his essay, Stan tells the story of Christmas Eve in 1989 shortly after the Romanian revolution, and the sacrifice he made for his eight–year–old brother. Before Stan even thought about the sacrifice, he was heading to the movie theater with a few friends. They heard oranges were available for purchase today, and Stan starts thinking about oranges for Christmas. Hundreds of people are willing to wait in line for just one orange, a very rare treat in war–torn Romania. Next, Stan changed his mind about the movie and decided to amaze his younger brother with oranges. The younger brother has never seen or touched an orange before. It was an incredible sight, seeing boxes of oranges stacked as tall as Stan at the rear entrance of the grocery market. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, there are the small sacrifices or good deed we do on a daily basis. A friendly smile or word can make the stressed out cashier at Stater Bros realize that they are appreciated. Letting your spouse have the last Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookie, shows him that you love him, but also that you care for him. Next, are the sacrifices that require planning ahead. Helping at the Knights of Columbus spaghetti dinner on the first Saturday in November requires me to request the day off from work. Weeks before the event I create the flyers to advertise the spaghetti dinner to the Victorville community and make changes and revisions as needed. We purchase eight tickets ahead of time to invite friends to the dinner and support the fundraiser. The fundraiser helps the disadvantaged youth of Saint Joan of Arc join the catechism program. The day of the dinner, my husband Guy and I use 33 loaves of French bread to make garlic bread for all the guests. Without a doubt the enormous sacrifices we make are the most rewarding. Being a parent is one of the greatest sacrifices made by ordinary people. When my son Guy was born, there was nothing in the world that could have prepared me of the joy I was feeling. While my children were minors, my life revolved around them. I worked the graveyard shift so I could be home when my daughter Stella had a bad day at school. • 2. Stan Grant's 'Australian Dream' The purpose of a text is driven by the context which determines the tone and structure. Stan Grant's "Australian Dream" debate and Wallace Wurth lecture differ in context, causing great contrast, while retaining the same purpose, exposing the unjust treatment of Indigenous Australians. The Wallace Wurth lecture occurred soon after the abusive treatment of Aboriginal youth in the Din Dale juvenile facility was divulged to the public. Grant's vexation is conveyed through his harsh tone and emotive language. The "Australian Dream" debate is more neutral. According to Grant, the Australian Dream was built on the backs of his people. Both speeches share a powerful call to action and a well defined tonality. The foundation of Stan Grant's speeches is the context in which they were written. Grant's Wallace Wurth lecture occurred shortly after the exposure of the horrendous treatment of Aboriginal youth in detention centres. "This week Australia is a boy strapped to a chair. This week Australia is aboriginal boys tear gassed, locked down and beaten." A cry was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the "Australian Dream" debate Grant is composed, despite the use of personal anecdotes, his words are smooth and flow easily creating an engaging speech. Grant's voice is kept respectful, calling for action without demanding it. Passion can still be heard in his voice, passion for his people and for his cause, but he does not let this take over. It is also clear that what he is discussing, the injustice that has been thrust upon the Aboriginal people, specifically that of his relatives, does cause him pain but it is shrouded. There is no urgency to this speech, while it is still important. This debate was not planned because of a source of outrage, simply a debate to make arguments known, it is due to this that Grant has kept himself composed throughout the ... • 3. Analyzing Eminem's Song 'Stan' I think it depends on the individual choice. In today's audience, it is no secret that vocal music dominates overall. When we listen to vocal music, the mood of the song can have you feeling one way and suddenly have you feeling another way. Eminem's song "Stan" is a perfect example. The song has a fan writing a letter to Eminem. In the beginning, he tells Eminem how much of a big fan he was to him and has been trying to get it contact with him, while also telling him about his life and feeling sorry about the loss of one of Eminem relatives, but by the end of the song he is hurt and mad that Eminem never responded to him. Unfortunately, he takes his and his child's mother life. The lyrics can take you up and down in vocal music. Online radio ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The comic book is a way in which so many have taken to reading and observing art, and it has changed throughout the years. In the 1930's and 40's a child of color or even a girl would be able to find someone who looked like them in the comic books they purchased. They were to read Superman and Batman, with whom both were well–off and white. They had to read these characters in order to get their entertainment before televisions became popular. In the 50's the comic books were still white dominated, however, a female hero was introduced as Wonder Woman. That was the status quo until 1966 when Black Panther was introduced. The mainstream comic scene was changed and he was followed by Falcon, Storm, and Luke Cage. That was a changing point and yet many argue that there is still not enough representation of minorities in comic books. Stan Lee's Dr. Strange, though he wears a cape, is no golden age Superman. Instead, he is a conservative man who answers to a greater vow to aid all humanity regardless of the cost to himself, who just happens to get along with local law enforcement. There are four main things in the Dr. Strange comics that set them apart from the golden age comics, the first is the conservative nature of the conflict seen, even in the "greatest battles ever seen" no one is truly hurt, the second is the lack of corporate or harden criminals who need to be taught a lesson, instead the criminals introduced in ... Instead of committing violent crimes or being a part of organized crime that put others in danger they are petty criminals such a thieves, or guilt–ridden men. Even as these men commit the crimes seen in the comics they are wholesome criminals. For example, in issue 110 When Dr. Strange is faced with a man haunted by nightmares and guilt about robbing a man, Strange agreed to help the man stop his nightmares as he was not yet aware of their cause. As Dr. Strange attempted to help the man he was trapped in a trance. The man then attempted to kill Strange to prevent him from telling the authorities but, Strange easily subdued the man once he awoke from his trance. Faced with his guilt the man clamed "it's over! You're alive, that means I've lost." (Dr. Strange 110, 5) The man concluded that his escape was improbable, therefore deciding it was best to surrender and claim "now I'll confess." (Dr. Strange 110, 5) In a later issue Strange is faced with Two thieves' who steal a gem and get transported to the Purple dimension and become slaves. Not only is the issue of slavery addressed as being fundamentally wrong, as Dr. Strange makes it so Aggamon can only regain his strength by letting people go, but the criminals once saved realize the error of their ways and turn themselves into the police (Dr. Strange 119, 8). I found it intriguing that Coppinger, who has been diagnosed with incurable cancer, claims his faith in God has grown following his diagnosis; in general, people tend to lose their faith when confronted with life altering obstacles. Although Coppinger's story is inspiring, I am skeptical about the validity of his claim when it is expanded to incorporate the general population because much of his supporting evidence relies on his faith, which is entirely objective. Essay Stan Kenton Stan Kenton: Progressive Concepts in Jazz Stanley Newcomb Kenton is one of the most influential figures to be found in all of jazz history, even being called "the most significant figure of the Modern Jazz age" by Frank Sinatra (Agostinelli, 6). Kenton's progressive concepts of how music is written and performed greatly affected the genre of jazz, and created something new and unique. Always under controversy, Kenton and his band always strove to do something different, never settling into a niche for long periods of time. The standard big band sound of the late 1940s and 1950s was very laid back. Rhythmically, it was normal to play just behind the beat to create this relaxed feel, with a definite emphasis on the "swing" style. Swing music was usually composed of one melody played by one section of the band, and other sections, if playing at all, would play chord hits in different places. The function of the rhythm section is mostly to comp and stay out of the way. These bands usually stayed within either 3/4, 4/4, 2/2, or 2/4 time signatures. Kenton altered this system in many ways to create something fresh and progressive. Kenton's sound was more aggressive and even occasionally more abrasive than of other bands. The saxophones played strongly, with screaming trumpets, and a lush, rich trombone sound. One aspect that made the Kenton charts different from others was the layering techniques used within the band. This would involve one section of the band playing a melody. Then another section would play a different melody over top of the first one. Both would compliment each other rhythmically and harmonically. This process could then continue, adding more lines. When extracted, each line is still interesting by itself. The best example of layering in the Kenton library is "Artistry in Rhythm." The ideology that Lee's Captain America held wasn't viewed properly by political groups of other countries at the time, but Lee found reverence from young readers who idolized patriotism. At the time, Marvel Comics was called Timely Comics, and Timely Comics became the first comic book company to publish anti–Nazi stories. Released in 1963, Mothlight's running time of four minutes consists of nothing but what look like pictures of winged insects and foliage. Further investigation reveals that Brakhage created the film without a camera, and instead used two strips of splicing tape to press the object enough to emit light through it (Braunstein 285). No viewer of Mothlight will stop to wonder about a conceivable plot the film could be trying to convey. The film itself does not express that there is a plot to be perceived. Instead, audiences view the visuals and think only about the visuals because it is the only thing being presented. Once the connection to the title of the film is made, the next natural question to ask is "How?" The question is no longer directed at the screen in which the film is being projected. Instead, the question becomes about the physical objects being presented. Brakhage was able to use film to show or emphasize a part of nature one might not have taken a second to observe.
