2. April 14, 2014
Dear Class of 2014,
The purpose of this commencement guide is to address and answer as many of your
questions as possible concerning senior end-of-the-year activities and graduation. We are
very excited about both of these events. Many, many hours of planning have gone into the
preparation of what will be a very special time for both you and your parents.
This has been a very successful year for the Class of 2014. You have excelled in many areas.
We have truly enjoyed working with you and playing a role in your final year at Marietta.
Also, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the administration
team, the members of the staff, and the parents of the community who have been so helpful,
cooperative, and supportive throughout this school year.
Good luck, Class of 2014! You are a delightful group of young people and a very special
class of seniors.
Sincerely,
Leigh Colburn

Guidelines for Proper Commencement Attire
4. Gown should be removed from its individual package as soon as received.
Flowers and pins are not appropriate worn on gradation gowns.
No sunglasses, no gum, no cap or gown adornments.
Caps should be placed on head so that the mortarboard is level. The front of the cap
is indicated on the inside of the crown. Caps are never worn on the back of the head.
For graduation, caps should be worn parallel to the ground with the point in the center
of the forehead. Hats should be affixed with bobby pins. Tassels should be
positioned on the right. Minimal jewelry should be worn.
Ladies find it more practical to wear simple-styled, lightweight dresses without high
neckline or excess skirt fullness. Since the white robes are thin, white or light
colored dresses or sun dresses should be worn. If your dress is longer than the robe,
hem it up temporarily. White dresses are most appropriate and white or nude colored
hose will look best. Flip flops, sandals, and tennis shoes are inappropriate and not to
be worn.
Men need not wear coats under the gowns. A white shirt and a dark tie with dark
pants and dark dress shoes should be worn. Flip flops, sandals, and tennis shoes are
inappropriate and not to be worn. No shorts.
Honor Graduates remember to wear your gold honor cords. High Honor Graduates
remember to wear your gold honor cords and medals.
National Honor Society members remember to wear your stoles.
Beta Club members remember to wear gold honor tassels.
IB students remember to wear your cords.
NO graduation cap and gown adornment may be worn, unless it has been
approved by the Principal.
5. Special Reminders
Senior Guidelines
Commencement ceremony participation is a privilege and honor. The purpose is to
provide public recognition to graduates who have met all state and local
requirements.
Proper behavior is expected from Marietta High School students at all times.
Seniors are reminded that they are subject to the same rules and regulations while
on school property or participating in any school activity. In the last few weeks of
school, we would hate to see seniors place themselves in a position which would
bring embarrassment to them and their family and jeopardize their eligibility to
participate in commencement ceremonies.
Commencement ceremonies are conducted in a formal manner, and it is important
that all seniors be in attendance at practice. Any senior who does not attend
practice will not be permitted to participate in the formal commencement
ceremonies. Notify any employer now that you will be required to attend
graduation practice.
Tickets will be distributed at graduation practice on Friday, May 23, 2014. EACH
SENIOR WILL BE ISSUED TEN TICKETS FOR THE STADIUM
GRADUATION and ONLY SIX tickets for graduation in the gym. Additional
tickets are available upon request by the seniors for the stadium graduation only.
Handicap parking will be on Polk Street adjacent to the stadium. Gates will open at
8:00 AM.
Students are expected to meet their responsibilities and obligations as members of
our school. Seniors are reminded that all delinquent obligations are to be taken care
of prior to graduation practice. No tickets will be distributed to a senior who has a
deficiency or delinquent obligation. Students owing for any obligation can pickup
their diploma on Tuesday, May 27 after clearing their obligation.
Display proper behavior at all events.
Be on time for all practices and the graduation ceremony. GRADUATION
PRACTICE IS MANDATORY.
Wear appropriate clothing to each event.
PAY ANY FINANCIAL OBLIGATION PRIOR TO THURSDAY, MAY 22.
