2. Mise en scene
โข The location in which the music video is set relates to the
folk rock genre as it is set in the countryside which can be
seen as a calm place, it also fits in with the tempo of the
song.
โข Also, the use of props such as bales of hay, straw buckets
and shovels can be linked in with genre as it is folk rock,
and these props can be stereotypically linked in with folk
music.
3. The costumes used in the video are casual
clothes, which are quite bland and donโt tend to
stand out, the people in the video are also
covered up, which is something you donโt tend to
see in modern music videos. The use of these
costumes help the audience focus on other things
in the video, other than the costumes worn.
Low key lighting was used at the beginning of the video; this allows the
audience to see that the video starts off at the beginning of the day. It
also sets a calm atmosphere and fits in well with the slow tempo shown at
the beginning of the song.
The lighting gradually gets higher as the video goes on, which shows
that the day is going by and the tempo is gradually building
4. Editing
During the first part of the music video, multiple close ups were
used, which focus on minor things and make most of the image
blurry and unclear of what it is. I think that this effect can
work as a cliff-hanger, as you want to work out what it is that is
being shown. The camera also focuses on random things such as
bubbles, a bucket, trees, a small portion of some oneโs body and
small areas of the landscape. This allows the audience to get a
rough idea of what is going on in the video, and where the video
is set.
5. There are some shots at the beginning which show an ellipse of
time, which allows you to see the events that are going on throughout
the day. It also allows them to squeeze more time into the video, as it
jumps from one event to another, showing how the days go on.
I have also noticed that a lot of short takes have been used throughout
the video. For example, short shots of ben walking through the fields and
the woods have been shown, with short takes of other things such as
bubbles, and shots of the location. I believe that this has been done to
break up the video and to add a bit of variety. It also makes the video
seem more interesting as it shows a number of different shots, which
keeps the audiences attention focused on the video.
6. In the music video, cutting has been used to cut from one view of the
setting to another, which allows you to observe the location; in this
case it is the countryside at the end of the day. It allows us to see
that the setting is peaceful and calm.
Some fading has been used during the times when the
camera cuts from different angles, which allows a
smoother transfer of shots, which makes it calmer
and more relaxed, where you wouldnโt be able to
get this affect if they had just cut from scene to
scene.
Slow paced editing is used throughout the music video, even though the
events shown in the video gradually build and become livelier; the
editing is still at a slow pace. This allows the fast action shown to
fit in with the slower paced music being played at the time.
7. Sound
The music played during the music video is quite slow paced which fits in
well with the storyline, as it shows ben and his friends working to make a
water slide which goes through the countryside, and at the end of the
video you see them enjoying the slide that they had worked all day to
build, which shows that you may struggle through your path but in the end
you will be happy.
There were no added dialogue in the music video or any other added sounds.
The music being played was ambient sound, as it was added to the video as
a background sound.
8. Camerawork
At the beginning of the music video there was a close up on bubbles, -
which are shown throughout the video, as they link in well with the end
of the video- which gives a relaxed feeling to the video, and it works
well with the tempo of the music.
There is a low angle shot, showing ben walking
past holding a shovel and bags of straw in the
middle of the countryside.
Multiple long shots were used, which allows you to see the
location, and how it links in with the genre of music.
9. Closer to the end of the music video close ups were used to show the
peoples faces. This allows the audience to see the emotions of the
people, and allows us to see that the people were happy and enjoying
themselves.
I have also noticed that the storyline tends to relate to the song
lyrics in some way. For example, the song is about the artist
finding himself. In the video you see him walking down a path, in
order to find himself and be happy.
Tracking has been used quite a bit throughout the music video. It was
used to shows ben walking though the countryside and to show his
journey throughout the day. It was also used to show them going down
the water slide. The camera went down the slide too, to share the
experience of the slide with the audience.
