JUSTIN BIEBER
I'LL SHOW YOU
MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS
Throughout the beginning of the music video, there are a number of panoramic shots as well as
establishing shots of the location that features only Justin Bieber. The camera appears to move in
which to follow Justin as he walks around the set location, seemingly to be an incredibly urban
location, with only hills and mountains as well as rivers surrounding the area. At the beginning of the
video, the camera often acts as a point of view shot acting to be Justin as he walks, therefore is
angled downwards towards the floor as a point of view shot. Often, the editing cuts to different shots
of Justin Bieber, yet he is always in the same location or doing a similar action / movement and
therefore the continuity remains, despite the sharp cuts to different shots. I feel as though the mise-
en-scene of the music video focuses heavily on the location in order to show the message of the
video being that he is exploring the world, exemplified through the use of constant establishing shots
used throughout the music video, but as well as this the use of simplicity within the music video and
the shots used as often fast pace shots to show the location in all of its forms reinforcing that he is
travelling and exploring.
There are often various low angle shots such as when the artist is walking across the floor,
showing only the bottom half of his body. This could be to suggest that the main focus is
not on the actions of the singer, but instead what is around him. This can also be enforced
through how the singer lacks facial expression and communication with the camera at
various points within the music video, often looking out towards the rest of the setting and
location, rather than focusing his attention at the camera. A clear example for this within
the music video, is through the use of a pan used beginning with his shoes, which then
rises up to show his whole body, yet doesn’t just stop at the artist and instead pans higher
to show the waterfall in the distance. This helps build the representation of the artist as he
is seen to be exploring and focusing what is around him more than on himself - reinforced
through how the camera has captured him on his journey.
The location in itself appears incredibly isolated through how it is placed away from everyone and
everything and it is interesting to consider to simplicity of the music video and how the camera is solely
focused on following Justin around the area in relation to Justin Bieber as an artists lifestyle. The camera
helps to isolate Justin in just the surroundings around him, often following him from behind which could
mirror and parallel the idea of paparazzi following Justin in his everyday life. I feel as though the simplicity
of the music video also separates this video and contrasts it from his everyday life as he is alone and
secluded away from his fans and could have been used not to show his isolation but the representation of
his inner thoughts and feelings and that he needs to escape from his everyday reality every so often. As
an audience member, they may react to this music video surprised to see how his music has changed
and evolved from what is used to be, as the song in itself isn't particular up beat all the way through and
instead is more relaxing. Yet, I feel as though it would be enjoyable for an audience member to watch as
some may say that they feel as though they are following the journey with Justin. This is encouraged by
the title and the lyrics of the music video referencing "I'll show you". Here, there are direct links to the
lyrics in the video alongside the music video, focusing on exploring.
As the video progresses, there are often slight changes in the way that it has been edited which
changes the pace of the music video, and makes it incredibly interesting for audience members. At
some points, due to the use of only a single location and artist within the video, as well as the
repetitive nature of the events can sometimes make the video seem as though it is going on for a
prolonged amount of time. Therefore, it is sometimes switched up to be more original and effective
through the use of editing. This can be specifically seen when there is a pan of the location, and
suddenly the camera movement has been edited so the pace is quickened. I believe that this is
effective when linking the music video to the song and the pace of the chorus, as although the
versus within the music video are often slow, the chorus has a slight drop which often doesn't match
up to the camera work and events taking place within the music video, therefore when the editing
was sped up, it helps to add something interesting for the audience so it doesn't remain incredibly
repetitive all the way through. This same idea can be applied when the editing is slowed down so
the events happen in slow motion, which drag out the length of certain clips within the music video,
specifically when the artist is led in the water.
Sped up Slowed down
The music video begins to progress and although it would seem that the conventions of
the music video fit that of a concept music video, as he is not directly performing within the
music video, it almost seems to switch to a narrative music video through the conventions
displayed as the representation of the Justin Bieber within the video seems to fit that of
someone attempting to escape and express their freedom. There could be a hidden
message within the music video that is trying to be expressed by the artist through his use
of abstract and concept video, through how there is no real progression within the music
video and it often seems to repeat itself with the terms of the location and what he is doing
within the video. An example for this is that at the beginning, he is seen walking towards
the edge of the cliff, and after 2 minutes of establishing shots and pans of
The structure of the music video doesn't appear to have any set structure or purpose, thus again
fitting to the concept music video conventions. A concept music video is often 'based around a single
idea or concept and are usually unusual or obscure, even surreal for the audience'. I feel as though
the events, and with the editing within the music video constantly changing between being faster and
slower paced, it seems as though it fits the idea of it not being a particularly serious music video,
potentially filmed in a way that is just for fun, as the footage within the music video doesn’t appear to
be filmed incredibly professionally, as well as due to the behavior of Justin Bieber within the video, it
seems as though the mise-en-scene focuses primarily on him and his actions, presenting him as
enjoying himself and having fun. This is also reinforced through the use of the skateboard as a prop,
due to how the artist is often seen on the skateboard, thus reinforcing that it is used to show him
enjoying himself within the video - also suggesting he is not playing a particular character at all, and
is instead acting the way he would when he is not being filmed.
