Fresh Off The Boat Analysis
Fresh off the boat was created by Nahnatchka Khan. It is a comedy series starring Ranall Park,
Constance Wu, and Hidson Yang. This show is the first Asian–American family Television show.
There are a total of 30 episodes which is 2 seasons. The show was a huge hit that it got nominated as
Young Artist Award and won. In the first episode "Fresh off the boat" we were introduced to a
Chinese family that moves to suburban Orlando. It centers on the father who is obsessed with all
things American, a mother who is bewildered by a "white culture" and a hip–hop–loving son
(Eddie). In the beginning we get a glimpse of how the family feels about moving to Orlando. The
mother is completely against it and the children are worried about fitting in. The father on the other
hand is excited about opening his American Restaurant; that is the reason they moved in the first
place. In the few days the family moved, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mother had to fit in with the "white women" in her neighborhood and had to be engaged with
their daily routines. Eddie had problems of his own; the kids at his school did not understand why
Eddie ate a "nasty lunch" and that caused Eddie to beg his mom to buy him American food so he can
take it to lunch. The only one in the family who did not have troubles was the younger son who
found a girlfriend on his first day at school. The show is something new I have not seen. It makes
me realize of how different an American culture is to other foreigners. We are custom to this culture
we do not see how other people have to struggle. The first episode in my opinion felt discrimination
towards the Chinese family, because of how they had to change the way they lived just to fit in.
Sometimes we are not aware of how other people that just moved to America have to go through and
we expect them to already learn, and change their way just so we can be pleased. Overall the show

American classic in their current production of South Pacific under the direction of Charles Abbott,

Gender is a Fundamental Element of the Broadway Musical
Starting in the golden age of 1950, a Broadway musical's critical judgement depended on how well
the show's elements were formally integrated. Meaning the outlook of the plot in relation to the
music, lyrics and characterization of gender roles. Gender is a fundamental element of Broadway
musical theatre, constitutional to the musical's architecture. It is essential as a building block for
characters, music/lyrics, and stage settings. Broadway musical is a popular art, in which conveys
social issues in the female gender from the representations of women in the 1950's to today. The
Broadway musical participates in a larger conversation about gender and sexuality because it is a
commercial, profit–seeking, artistic commodity, entertainment form, and cultural product. Broadway
musical is a mainstream form that needs to relate to middle–class audiences' desires and
expectations, one might expect only social issues and stereotypical representations of women. The
female gender stereotypes are represented in Broadway musicals portrayed by the character's roles.
As time went by, the portrayal of the female characters in musicals changed because of the
representation that women in today receives. Thus, these musicals explore social issues of the day,
including women's rights and changing roles in U.S. culture, sometimes directly and sometime
obliquely. Therefore, the Broadway musical venerates female performers and provides substantial
roles for women. Female characters and roles

Narrative Essay: The Sioux City Boat Show
Many wonderful Friday evening dances were enjoyed with my one and only black–haired girlfriend.
The cost for the evening totaled thirty cents: five cents car fare each way to the Sioux City Boat
Club in Riverside, plus two five cent ice cream sodas at Phillips Drug Store on Pierce Street. The
evening ended as I walked the young lady home to 1211 Nebraska Street (the streetcars stopped
their regular schedules early in the evening). One more plus for streetcars: men in the late afternoon
would stand in front of Beck's Jewelry at the corner at 4th and Pierce and ogle the ladies who
exposed their ankles as they lifted their long–skirted Victorian–era dresses to board the streetcars,
which gave a big thrill to the onlookers. The automobile was just entering mass production, i.e. a
mass of so–called manufacturers, which finally topped ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ungainly chorus would never make the Ziegfeld Follies, which was a top–rung show in New
York at the time. The second floor balcony wrapped around three sides of the hall and was divided
into curtained stalls where the big spenders and ladies–of–the–evening viewed the show. The
curtains were opened or closed depending on the whims of the occupants. One event is vividly
remembered. The Superintendent, Mr. Gaddis, was an old time "pick handle" boss and frequently
cussed the laggards with a wide assortment of obscenities. My crew dug the trenches with long–
handled shovels, and if any were unable to keep dirt in the air, they were promptly laid off, easily
replaced by the unemployed sitting on the sidelines. There was a distinct depression following the
losses engendered by the San Francisco earthquake and fire. The collapse of big insurance
companies had a ripple effect, which caused widespread unemployment throughout the

Analysis Of The Poem ' The Bay Of Naples '
When I was looking through 17th–18th century European artwork in the Norton Simon Museum,
there was one piece of art that really stood out to me. That beautiful art piece was the Bay of Naples
by Claude–Joseph Vernet. This piece stood out to me because of the beautiful scenery that is
displayed and the deep serenity the piece gives me when I look at it. The Bay of Naples is a painting
of a landscape that captures the daily life of the bay. The materials used for this painting was oil on
canvas. Claude–Joseph Vernet made a painting that brings your attention to the foreground. In the
front, there is a boat being boarded. Some of the people that are not boarding the boat are standing
by the sea. In the sea, some boats are sailing off in the distance. One of the boats in the distance is a
large boat that gives the illusion of being three–dimensional. The form gives this illusion because of
the reflection in the sea. If you look in the lower–right, you can see the light from the sun
illuminating the sky. This light is hidden behind a large mountain that also has a three–dimensional
form. There is also lots of texture in the painting. Some texture is seen in the mountains and ground
giving a rough look, and some is seen in the sea in the form of ripples. On top of the mountain in the
lower–right, there is greenery that has an illusion of being light and feathery. In that mountain, there
is an arch that makes the other side visible. In the far distance, you can see a faint

Show Boat: Racial Injustice
The United States was built on a history of racial injustices. From the Native Americans being
bribed off of their land, Africans being kidnapped, shipped, and sold into slavery, Japanese
internment, to the more recent wrongs of faux vigilante–type killings like that of an African
American teen, Trayvon Martin, in Florida, and the alleged, police–involved killing of 18–year old,
African American teen Michael Brown of Ferguson, MO. These are just a few of the entrenched
ideologies that have haunted and continue to haunt the United States. With that being said, the arts
have not been immune to the throws of racial strife, in particular, theatrical productions.

Before that, music was mainly used as a backdrop to accompany blackface minstrel shows and
vaudeville. The musical talents of Kern and Hammerstein, "...was the first true combination of
music, lyrics, plot, and authentic characters in a theatrical work," (xroads, Virginia) used the music
to move the plot along and character development. Performers sung songs for emotional affect and
to show drama to a situation. For instance, Joe, the Cotton Blossom's dockworker, sang Ol' Man
River, which allowed the audience to understand Joe's importance on the boat, but also his life as an
observer of the shenanigans on and off of the Cotton Blossom. Moreover, after Magnolia left the

What Is The Most Memorable Moment In A Movie
Lights, Curtain, Action
The lights dimmed, the curtain lifted, and the actors came out. My excitement was growing, first
starting in my throat, then working its way to my stomach. The sound of the instruments filled the
theater as the actors start to sing in loud clear voices. This was how my most memorable moment in
my childhood started, at the Times Union Center Theater in the last week of February.
My interest in theater started when I was a little girl. In particular, it was a movie that started this
love. I can still remember the day my father brought home that movie, The Phantom of the Opera. It
was the first musical I watched that was not Disney. After watching it, I felt overwhelmed with all
the emotions expressed in the movie. Of course, being as young as I was then, I was unable to quite
understand the meaning in the movie but that was not a problem. I was more interested in the
singing and dancing that was shown throughout the movie. It was this musical that influenced me to
pursue a career in theater and movies.
Even though I loved the musical so much I never did see it live. My family could not afford to buy
tickets and very rarely did the show come to my hometown. That is until I was 17 when they came
to the Times Union Center in Jacksonville. My sister and I were thrilled, but instantly our
excitement died when we remembered that we do not have the money for tickets. The both of us
decided to start coming up with ways to earn money, such as extra chores and odd jobs around the
neighborhood. Slowly but surely we began to earn money.
By the end of December, we were still short a couple hundred bucks and seats were selling out
quickly. It was Christmas Day when the most wonderful thing happened. My family was opening up
presents and it was my turn to open mines. My father handed me this large present and inside was a
slightly smaller present and inside that was an even smaller present which inside contained an
envelope. Inside of that envelope was a Christmas card with the inside saying "Soak up this
moment!" Clipped to the side of the card was three tickets to The Phantom of the Opera. I was
overjoyed, I let out a little squeal and could not stop thanking my parents. Finally, I can see the

Demonstrate understanding of design principles:
Order of paragraph: 1st Context, 2nd design principals, 3rd subjective, 4th objective
Intro:
In this report of demonstrating key design principals, I am going to discuss the different design
elements and principals for the 3 websites I have chosen. The first website, which is on Shotover Jet
was created in 2001, compared to my second website which is again Shotover jet, but this was
created in 2014. For my third website I have chosen to use my own website I had designed in 2014,
for Rotorua Adventure Tourism LTD. I will be discussing these three websites by outlining the
websites specific contents and the elements that the website has used and by outlining the subjective
and objective aspects of each webpage.
Context
Discuss technology of time, and how it could have impacted the design. Eg access to computers and
internet speed
Discuss how what was happening in the world could have affected the design, eg recession, people
being aware of global warming, and NZ's clean green image
In the 2001 Shotover Jet website: How did the people advertise, were there lots of design to choose
from, who used websites (making a background of what are you going to say), eg in the 2001
census, over 37% households had access to internet , compared to in 2013 over 75% of households
had access to internet.
Due to the Lord of the Rings movies and the Rugby World Cups, NZ started to gain a wider

Show Boat Sparknotes
Show Boat Changes Its "Wicked Stage" On the night of December 27, 1927 the musical Show Boat
opens (Laufe 475). The show ends in silence; no applause or a standing ovation. There was not even
a curtain call. (Sheed 120) Producer Florenz Ziegfeld thought that the show had failed. (Sheed 120)
What he did not know that night was that Show Boat was to go on to be one of the most influential
shows in American musical theatre. Show Boat revolutionized American musical theatre by
changing the setting of the average musical theatre work to America to make the show inherently
American, by changing and challenging what topics could be discussed, and by making the songs an
integrated part of the musical that emphasize the themes, express the emotions of the characters, and
move the story along. Show Boat tells the story of a river boat named the Cotton Blossom that
travels up and down the Mississippi River and the lives of the people on and surrounding the Cotton
Blossom. The Cotton Blossom is run by Captain Andy who has a daughter named Magnolia
Hawkes. Magnolia befriends Julie LaVerne, a performer on the ship. Upon stopping in one of the
towns Julie is found out to be part black and is arrested on the charge of miscegenation and is forced
to leave the ship. Magnolia also falls in love with a man from the same town named Gaylord
Ravenal, and she ultimately leaves the boat with him and starts a new life. Eventually Magnolia and
Gaylord's marriage breaks up. Magnolia then returns to

Show Boat History
On December 27, 1927 when the premiere of Show Boat opened in the spectacular new Ziegfeld
Theater, producer Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. had brought something new to Broadway. As Katherine Leigh
Axtell writes, the show was "neither an operetta nor a musical comedy, neither a vaudeville nor a
revue." For the first time, composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II seamlessly
integrated plot, character, music, and dance into a modern musical production –– starting a new
genre of musical, which is often called "musical theater" or "book musical." Show Boat also brought
serious themes that left the audience unable to react the way they had to the previous Broadway
musicals. For the first time, there was a breakthrough in racial integration. ... Show more content on

According to Todd Decker, an Associate Professor of Musicology at the Washington University of
St. Louis, "Ferber's story is best known today for its retelling as a musical. Just weeks after the novel
was published, the composer Jerome Kern and the lyricist and author Oscar Hammerstein II set
about making Ferber's interracial cast of characters sing and dance on the Broadway stage." Show
Boat illustrates the real lives of both blacks and whites living and working alongside the Mississippi
river. Although within the storyline blacks and white were both on the same stage, Show Boat
tackles complicated issues through an intricate tale of interracial

Musical Theatre As A Theatrical Performance
Musical Theatre is a theatrical performance when the story is told through dialogue, song, and
dance. Back then, people didn't Snap Chat, Face Time or watch TV for entertainment; they would go
to the Theatre for a night out, first date, etc. To give a more definitive description of how musicals
evolved, affected, and influenced throughout history, a time line of major musicals that defined
certain stages of Musical Theatre will probably help people understand what makes it so unique.
Now a quick history lesson, Musical Theatre technically was created in 5th Century BCE Ancient
Greece, when staged comedies and tragedies would be told with a bit music and dance...but
Musicals didn't fully emerge into the world until the early 20th Century when the art form went to
London, England, and then to America, which formed the famous theatre district, Broadway. Now
that the basics are covered of where Musical Theatre came from, this paper is more about how
Broadway Musicals evolved into what they are in present day, how people have reacted to such
performances, and how musical theatre has impacted not only America, but also the world.
The first era of Musical Theatre actually started in the 1920's–1930's during the Great Depression.
This was a the first time there were musicals other than the fun, young, and enjoyable shows, the
first example of this would be the musical Show Boat, which premiered in December 1927, the
music was by Jerome Kern, book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II,

Creating Engaging Literacy Lesson Plan
Creating engaging literacy lesson plans takes a combination of effective instruction and material
interesting to students. Knowing your students is essential in the planning and implementing of any
lesson to ensure it reaches all students .Reading Comprehension: What Every Teacher Needs to
Know, states" Influential teachers are highly valued participants in the reading process. They know
the importance of every student comprehending successfully."(McLaughlin,2012 p. 433). Ensuring
all students have the opportunity to learn and comprehend the information presented in a lesson is
important to lesson creation. Creating and implementing a reading/writing lesson for this course,
took some extra care and a planning. Using literacy based instruction practices in combination with
STEM education proved to be very helpful as well as engaging to my students.
I feel this lesson motivated students to read more informational texts. By reading this story, students
were intrigued about the other different kinds of boats there are and how they are made and work.
This also encouraged students to use a fictional text to learn about real–world items. One student
asked what other kinds of books we could read to inspire us to build things. We discussed finding a
story about cars or buildings and then using different materials to create our own versions. This
lesson also introduced students to a way of applying what they learned from a fictional text, to other
subjects, in this case

A Boating Safety Course
Boating safety is an issue of great importance for people who spend a lot of time on the water. Once
you've passed the required boat test and received your necessary boating license, you can focus on
the different elements of in–boat safety. A boating safety course is wise to take so you can get the
training necessary to stay safe on the water and make the most of your boat licence. Any boating
license Ontario centre can steer you in the right direction to take a safety test along with your regular
boating course exam. Some of the topics you'll learn about in boating safety course include the
minimum amount of safety equipment allowed on your boat, how you should respond to
emergencies on the water and other applicable regulations.
One important aspect of boating safety is to always be prepared before you take your boating license
and head out onto the water. Inspect your boat well so you know all the equipment is in working
order, and check the weather report for your area, too. Let someone know where you'll be going and
be sure to bring enough fuel to get you there and back. Once the boat is ready to go, double–check
that you have your boat licence and go practice all the things you've learned from your boat test.

Essay about Showboat: A Revolutionary Production
Showboat; a Revolutionary Production
The 1900's were a time for great transformations and growth within the theatrical community. Of all
types of theater that were developed during that period, musical theater matured into a more
respected and widely desired form of entertainment. Musical theater transformed from blackface
minstrel shows with gag productions into pieces of reputable theater. One of the most influential
productions in making that turn into sophistication is Showboat. Based on the novel by Edna Ferber
Showboat was written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II (Smith 627). Showboat was
premiered in the Ziegfeld Theatre on December 27, 1927 (Smith 627). The 1926 novel chronicled

Regardless of what any critic labels it, Showboat was a change in theater during a time when very
little changes were being made. Many productions during the 1920's were diluted into a simple
formula. Add in some dancing girls, gag tricks and "happy go lucky" musical numbers and one has a
generic 1920's musical production. As stated by Stanley Green, "it [1920 era] was not a period
distinguished by many changes in the structure of the musical comedy theatre. Of all the musicals
written and produced during that decade, only Showboat was able to offer a truly adult libretto
combined with superior music and lyrics" (2). Jerome Kern, the primary lyricist, started his writing
career at The Princess Theatre where he made conscientious efforts to create a new form of musical
comedy, but in his efforts only Showboat is considered a classic because it broke so many musical
comedy taboos (Green 71). He was assisted by Oscar Hammerstein II in his efforts to mold
Showboat into a new age production. Showboat's "musical integration and before it's time
characterization has put itself in a class of its own; "[s]ome have gone so far as to say that if there is
ever to be an American school of opera, this is the model upon which it must be based" (Howard
666). The major difference between Showboat and other productions of its time was the fluidity and
depth Kern creates. Roy Hemming writes, "Kern's pioneering work in integrating songs and text

Fresh Off The Boat Stereotypes
Fresh Off the Boat is an ABC comedy, based on Eddie Huang's best–selling memoir of the same
name, that has resonated with audiences perhaps in part thanks to its grounding in real experiences.
Set in the 1990's, it tells the story of a young Eddie, played by newcommer, Hudson Yang, and his
experience moving from Washington DC's Chinatown to suburban Orlando, Florida. Fresh Prince of
Bel–Air starred Will Smith as a fictionalized version of himself, who is sent to live in an upper–class

result of a fight. Both sitcoms, Fresh Off the Boat and the Fresh Prince of Bel–Air highlights the

The theory suggests that the mass media could influence a very large group of people directly and
uniformly by 'shooting' or 'injecting' them with appropriate messages designed to trigger a desired
response. Stereotypes can be found in both sitcoms; although both shows find away to have viewers
look the other way. For example, asians have a long history of being made fun of because of their
thick accents. In Fresh Off the Boat, Eddie and his siblings speak like every other American kid. In
fact, asian names are a common joke as well, but the show's characters have typical names. Media is
an important source of information about a culture and media portrayals contribute to public
perception (Hodan, 2015). Fresh Prince of Bel–Air is used as a medium at which stereotypes are
presented through the show. In the beginning years, Will is shown as an outcast who brings
embarrassment to his Bel–Air family being conveyed as how the average young black man is seen
in society. However, in an episode where Will's uncle is utterly embarrassed by his actions during a
gathering at their home full of wealthy upper–class patrons, Uncle Phil himself is proved wrong of
his misconceptions after hearing Will play "Für Elise" by Beethoven. Prior to the Fresh Prince of
Bel–Air, black families were portrayed as poor, uneducated or broken. The show's attempt to screen
out stereotypes and create a more positive image with references that expand the cultural context is
represented in the show in a brighter

noticed was the sports potential that the industry had. With the acceptance of waterskiing into the

competition to all time highs. These shows allow the main consumers to get different options from

American Musical Theatre has been influenced and developed over many hundreds of years
stretching back to the Greek tragedy through Europe to the Integration of story, music and spectacle

the cyclical nature of theatre and its history across Europe. Each stage is influenced by the

My Musical Theatre
Throughout my entire life I have never had any real interest in musical theatre. One time when I was
in about 5th grade, my grandfather took me, my brother and my cousin to a showing of the
"Nutcracker." Let me tell you, I tried my hardest, I really tried, but I couldn't stay awake for the
entire performance. This experience I had put a bad taste in my mouth as for the next several years, I
never attended another musical theatre event.
One day in the spring, I was going through Golden Bear Advising, and I saw that Berkeley
recommended that everyone should listen to the Hamilton soundtrack. I didn't know much about the
musical other than that a couple of my friends in my high school's theatre company listened to it.
My first thought was that it must be better than the Nutcracker, so I decided I'd give it a chance.
About 15 seconds into "Alexander Hamilton" I remember saying out loud, "hmm wow, this bumps!"
My first time listening to the soundtrack, I didn't listen to it all the way through, but I was definitely
hooked –– I wanted to keep listening. Over the summer, whenever I'd go on long car rides, I'd try to
listen to the soundtrack. To be honest, before I listened to the soundtrack, I didn't think that I would
like it, simply because I wasn't a fan of musical theatre. However, I was blown away and thoroughly
the music, the way in which it was presented and the story that was told.
What sticks out to me about the soundtrack is that it kept my attention because at the end

Pros And Basics Of BUI
All U.S. states have laws against using alcohol and drugs while operating a boat or any other
watercraft. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard oversees federal laws against drinking on a boat and
arrests people for boating under the influence, or BUI. Conviction of a BUI crime is a serious
offense, and it can result in jail time, large monetary fines, suspension of boating and driver's
licenses, and increases in auto and boat insurance premiums.
Increases in BUI Arrests Laws against BUI have been enacted across the country, because operating
a boat while intoxicated leads to accidents, deaths, and property damage. The Coast Guard tracks
statistics regarding boating accidents and reported 4,158 accidents and 626 deaths ... Show more

States without formal marine law enforcement orders may also set–up BUI checkpoints for
questioning and inspecting boat operators and passengers for intoxication while boating. BUI
checkpoints operate in much the same way as roadside DUI checkpoints, and this type of
enforcement is leading to an increasing number of BUI arrests and convictions. [5].
Basics of BUI Charges The crime of boating under the influence is defined in most states as
operating any form of watercraft on a body of water with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or
above. A few states define a BUI charge as having a blood alcohol content of .1 percent or above.
In some states it is an additional crime if there is a minor onboard the boat, especially if the minor
has a blood alcohol level above .01 percent.
Elements of BUI Charges A person can be convicted of a BUI offense when they are operating any
watercraft and are intoxicated to any significant degree by alcohol, drugs, or both.
In most cases, this involves a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or higher for recreational vessels
and .04 percent of higher for commercial vessels.
The crime of BUI applies to all forms of watercraft, including sailboats, speedboats, yachts, fishing
boats, jet skis, and commercial vessels.

The Song Ten Minutes Ago, Is From Rodgers And Hammerstein...
The song "Ten Minutes Ago" is from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. A musical adaption of
the classic fairytale by the same name, it became a musical sensation when Richard Rodgers and
Oscar Hammerstein transformed it into a live musical television broadcast in 1957. Starring Julie
Andrews, it retold the fairytale of a young girl living a miserable life under the roof of her evil
stepmother and her three equally vicious stepsisters. With the Prince's Ball nearing, the four women
in her family were planning to go, leaving Cinderella at home on the night of the ball. When all hope
seemed lost, Cinderella's Fairy Godmother appears, granting her wishes by transforming her from
rags to riches, and giving her a pair of glass slippers. Cinderella was able to go to the ball
unrecognized, under the condition to be home by midnight, when the spell wore off. At the ball, she
meets the prince and there is immediately chemistry, but she rushes to leave before the clock strikes
twelve, in fear of the prince seeing her for who she really was and being disgusted by her true self.
As she escapes the castle, she loses one of her glass shoes on the steps of the castle. Leaving it
behind, she makes it home without being seen by anyone, and resumes her life as a poor girl being
abused by her family. The next day, the prince announces a search for Cinderella, not knowing her
name or remembering her face. He went around town and asked women to try on the glass shoe,
believing that he would

Rogue Wave Analysis
It is not safe for teens to sail by themselves or with friends. Although, sailing by themselves or with
friends can help them get more experience with sailing and even fishing. It can also help them learn
more about the ocean and the different things in the ocean. But, many things could go wrong while
they are sailing and no one can help them, they could die or go missing forever! If a teen goes
sailing by themselves or with few friends, they could go missing somewhere in the ocean and no one
could find them. In the article "Marine experts say missing Fla. teenagers should not have been

fishing boat," it doesn't say if they have found the children yet so they probably haven't. It also says
that they searched day and night and haven't found the children. Also, if a teen goes sailing by
themselves, many things could go wrong, like somethings could break, something could fall out of
the boat, or someone could get trapped in the boat. In the short story "Rogue Wave" Scoot had
gotten trapped under the deck and was sinking every minute. In the story, it says that the doors were

This paper is a critique of a production of Show Boat, a musical classic with compositions by
Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, which was performed and produced by NETworks
Presentations LLC at Emens Auditorium on the 14th of February 2001. Clayton Phillips, the director
of the production, attempted to test the waters of racial discrimination by exploring controversial
themes such as prejudice and interracial relationships. Show Boat takes an enlightened approach to
ethnic controversy by using both music and drama to express the feelings and hopes of the
characters to the audience. Even though I enjoyed the production, I felt that it was lacking in terms

The scenes and props complimented the attire of the performers, blending together create a
magnificent display. The scenery was realistic enough to afford the viewer an escape into depths of
the show. The setting was beautiful and the structures almost lifelike, excepting the absence of a
front screen door. It seems that almost all plays and television shows I have viewed neglect this
detail. The stage lighting played a key role in the show by setting the mood of the performance
during soulful, pensive songs. In contrast, the lighting proved to be a detriment by overbearing the
performance of the artists, in that one's attention was drawn to the glare of extreme quantities of
makeup rather than the actions of the characters. This was most notable during the final portions of
the production.
The entertainers gave their characters genuine life through their gestures, attitude and charm. Even
the way the voices led one to believe that the characters were actually presenting their own thoughts
and ideas, not those of fictional characters. During the play, the voices of the performers were quite
audible, excepting certain musical presentations when the lyrics of the songs were at points nearly
indiscernible. Even with consideration given to this technical glitch, the sound quality was quite
agreeable and the songs enjoyable. The voices of the performers were strong

A Broadway Dream Book Analysis
Picture it. Broadway during the 1920s. Florenz Ziegfeld produces a revue called Ziegfeld's Follies.
Girls appear in elaborate costumes bordering on the risque. Gangsters are running rampant from Al
Capone to Bugs Moran to Machine Gun Kelly. This is the world in which Agnes "Bobbie" Storey
finds herself.
Agnes' family lived in Leaholme until the war nearly closed their inn, forcing them to find work in
London. Shortly afterward, her father dies of Spanish Influenza, and Agnes is forced to find a job to
help support her family. She manages to land a job at a restaurant belonging to a friend of her father.
It is here that she wins The Most Beautiful Barmaid in London contest. This sparks Andre Charlot to
offer her a spot in his revue that is traveling to Broadway. She immediately accepts, thus beginning
her love affair with fame, success, and New York City.
A Broadway Dream by Jane Hill is a fiction based on the historical person by the name of Bobbie
Storey. Amazon has this correctly classified as historical fiction or biographical fiction; however, it
was incorrectly classified as romance on OBC. The book is fairly short with only about 200 pages.
It may seem odd, but my favorite part of this story was the ending. I am not familiar with the history
of the 1920s nor the life of Bobbie Storey. Therefore when I read the ending, I was actually taken
aback. To me, the ending contributed to the reality of the story. It's unfortunate that I cannot share

Intro and Description:
The boating industry ( SIC code 3732 and NAICS code: 336612) is a collection of firms that works
predominantly in the business of manufacturing boats. Within this particular NAICS entry are
manufacturers that specialize in the production of watercraft, not in shipyards, for the purpose of
personal customer use; Including: classic boats, airboats, inflatable plastic and inflatable rubber
boats, sailboats, yachts, underwater remote operated vehicles, pleasure boats and motor boats, just to
name a few.

The main thing that separates competitors today is price, delivery time, and quantity. If a company
does not measure up to its competition in these three areas then they run the risk of losing business.
Potential Entrants: To open a business in this industry requires a large amount of start–up capital and
is quite difficult to acquire the needed inputs due to high prices. In addition, it is hard to get in
contact with the suppliers and government agencies needed to successfully run the business. New
entrants also face the challenge of attracting and retaining customers. The business is currently in
the growing phase with multiple firms already pining for customer attention or have acquired a large
pool of loyal customers. That being said the threat of new entry is low to this industry. Starting a
new company is so difficult that it is unlikely that firms in this industry will pay new entrants much
mind. More likely than not firms trying to enter the industry will not be seen much of a threat.
However, it would be wise for those already active to be on their guard to make sure that they don't
underestimate their new competitions potential to outwit them.
Power of Buyers/ Customers:
The main buyer in this industry has been upper–class White males. More specifically Baby
boomers. This demographic has slowly gone down over the past couple years, due to old age. On the

Essay on African American Representation in Show Boat
The evolution of musical theater in America can be viewed through many lenses. Through the lens
of hindsight, it is easy to reflect on the treatment and portrayal of African–Americans in the
contextual fruition of live entertainment in the United States. Dating back to the later half to the
nineteenth and into the early twentieth century, ethnic representation in musical theater underwent a
gradual change paralleling a shift in societal opinion toward racial equality. Though by today's
standards, its depiction of African–Americans may seem archaic at best, Show Boat changed the
way audiences viewed musical theater through its success as the first show to deal with racial issues
in the United States. In order to fully understand the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In her doctoral dissertation, Katherine Axtell examines Show Boat from its novel origins to its
inception and creation as a work of musical theater. It is clear from her analysis that even though
Hammerstein and Kern may not have intended Show Boat to be about race, it was still at the
forefront of their minds. Axtell states, "sources...strongly suggest that, page for page and line for
line, the composer and librettist expended the greatest energy on the development of material for the
romantic leads, Magnolia and Ravenal; that they took inspiration...from contemporary African–
American musical theater."6 Axtell also cites Todd Decker, "who in 2007 included Show Boat in a
larger study of 'black–white encounters' in selected American stage and film musicals... Decker
argues that Kern and Hammerstein concentrated, from the beginning of their collaboration, on the
development of interracial encounters and the creation of such numbers as 'Can't Help Lovin; Dat
Man' and 'Ol' Man River.'"7
It was, in fact, "Ol' Man River" that many believed to be the highlight of the show. Sung by the
African–American character, Joe, "Ol' Man River" represents the overarching theme of Show Boat.
The "river" in the song represents the Mississippi River, but the lyrics

The Importance Of Weather Conditions In The Sea
Any experienced captain will tell you that weather conditions play a huge roll in decision making
while navigating any vessel. Seaworthiness does not rely on the size of your boat. How your boat
handles weather conditions are taken into consideration during the design and construction process.
Using your boat for what it is designed to do is key. Voyages into water ways and harsh weather that
your boat cannot handle can be disastrous. Different levels of experience determine your ability to
handle weather conditions. One boater may find certain heavy weather conditions to be manageable
while another may not. The type of waterway you're operating on has much to do with how
treacherous weather conditions will become. Navigating in deep, ... Show more content on

The zig–zag approach will enable you to leave your boat in the trough long enough to turn. You
need to minimize the time in the trough and being broad side by the swell, so you do not broach.
Running with the swell behind you
When running in front of the sea,, the swell comes from behind you and this can be challenging. The
stern can be swept and pushed side to side. Keep the stern perpendicular to the oncoming seas to
navigate these conditions.
Being lifted by heavy seas is reason for concern. Boats tend fall quickly down the slope crest to
trough. When the stern is high your propeller could rise out of the water. If the rudder loses contact
with the flow of water, it will be left useless. Your boat could yaw to one side and broach into the
trough.
Sliding down the wave fast enough to bury the bow is another reason for concern. Pitchpoling can
exists when the stern is being pushed. To take the swells off one quarter and the other try tacking
before the seas. When running before the seas consider towing a drogue to slow your speed. This
will allow the helmsman an easier time control the stern in the proper position. The heaving to
maneuver
When conditions are become violent beyond your control, you and the boat are taking too much
force it's time to for the heaving to maneuver. Depending on the type of boat, this maneuver keeps
the bow in to the wind or a tad off the wind and waves.

Show Boat Scene Analysis
To be sure, sound summons our attention to the spatial and temporal dimensions of a scene by

This particular art form began in 1927, when a Universal employee, Jack Foley helped turn the film

High Island Research Paper
I've been going to the same summer camp for six years and most years we canoe out to High Island,
which is about a mile away from the camp, or a 45 minute paddle. I've never had much luck going
out to the island. One year it was so windy we had to stop at a town dock and be driven back to
camp because the winds were so strong, and the water was so choppy. Another year my canoe was
dented, which dramatically affected the tracking so we had to be tied to a counselor's canoe and
brought back to camp. With the strong memories of those trips I was worried when my counselor in
training program required a three day camping trip to High Island, meaning a canoe trip out with
lots of supplies. For our group of four guys, four girls, and two counselors ... Show more content on

While my friends paddled away, Sophia and I were blown around by the wind, and wouldn't get to
the island in the predicted time window. We stopped at a dock and quickly were able to switch
positions, so I was in the front of the boat, and sophia was in the back. This helped a lot but, we
were coming upon a part of the route where we had to travel past an area where two islands allowed
strong winds to come through. We paddled hard, not caring about the calluses or sore arms, just
trying to get where we needed to be. Once our boat passed the channel of wind, we paddled our way
past the choppy water and found our way to the island shore where Liam and Ethan were waiting.
They helped us unpack and tie up the boat, when our counselor noticed a broken part of the boat.
The yoke or middle beam of the boat was broken, which he explained, was extremely dangerous,
and most likely why it was so hard to get to the island. Whenever we traveled in the canoe from that
trip on we couldn't have much extra weight in the boat, and we had a designated rescue boat. The
day after we arrived on the island we paddled to a quarry next to Liam and Ethan, and did the same
the day after that when we went back to camp. This trip showed me that road trips are seen as an
American tradition because it shows how a journey can change people and in circumstances they
can sometimes relate to. Although I was

Compare And Contrast The American Musical Theatre In The...
Compare and contrast the American musical theatre in the 1920s with that of the 1930s. How did
each reflect and absorb its era? What forms & styles were dominant, what was the same, what was
different and why? Do we see elements from these decades in shows today? Use examples from
specific musicals. In the 1920's, musical theater was "roaring" just like the economic situation in the
United States. Florenz Ziegfeld was at his peak, buying shows and catapulting them to the forefront
of pop culture. The most popular songs on the radio were songs that were written and performed in
broadway shows. The subway station had just opened in times square and people came rushing to
the theaters. Rag–time was the popular genre at the time and Jazz musicians were working on their
own genre just blocks away. Prohibition caused the rise of the speakeasy and as a result, people of
different social classes were interacting. People were looking for entertainment that matched the
change in people's sensibilities. During this period, musicals (which were labeled "musical
comedies" at the time) were in the form of acceptable of guilty pleasures – the appeal of women and
their sexuality, silly characters that made fools of themselves, or the goofy country girl dancing
through the chores of the day. Ziegfeld's Follies, Marx brother shows, and Al Jolson playing his
character in blackface are great examples of these shows that focused on showing off the stars and

Rocking the Boat is a sculpture created by Janis Mars Wunderlich in 2016. It is a ceramic clay piece
with underglaze, slips, oxides, and glaze. This piece of art really caught my eye when I entered the

with a boat on her head, I was perplexed, but also curious. My first thoughts about the meaning of
the piece was that the woman was the mom of the two children in the boat. The weight of her
children had really weight her down to the point where she is crying and rather tattered looking.

The Motorcycle Diaries, Natural Lighting And Quick Camera...
In The Motorcycle Diaries, natural lighting and quick camera movements are consistent layers in the
filming technique used. To evoke a greater sense of importance in certain scenes, directional lighting
is used. An important and foreshadowing scene in the film, the ferry from Pucallpa, Peru to the leper
colony shows the division of wealth through soft natural lighting and the use of shadows. This
particular scene uses an important element of mise–en–scene, lighting, to create a powerful,
suggestive introduction to the culmination of their voyage. The 1–minute sequence is free of
dialogue, but conveys necessary information through subliminal filming techniques. The scene
begins with a wide, overhead crane landscape shot that encapsulates town they're leaving in a
shadow, while the ferry is surrounded by bright, natural light, heading towards the unknown. This
particular shadowing may infer they're leaving the past behind, while the engulfing bright light may
indicate a positive future in their travels. The next shot is a lower side shot that shows the expansive
river and the ferry with a small–unidentified boat trailing behind. This scene is void of any
structures other than the forest behind the two boats. Slowly, the boats move down the river with
beautiful, soft side lighting from the natural sunset. The use of this lighting induces a personal
connection with the ferry and its respective travels. Different from a typical Hollywood scene, the
side lighting allows for

The Rebirth Of American Musical Theatre Essay
Two great writers of American musical theatre, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, had one
idea in common. They wanted to present to the American public a new and revolutionary musical
that would stand out above the rest. They wanted to make an impact on the societies of the era. They
wanted to be creative and do something that was considered rebellious. When they finally combined
their ideas together they created an American masterpiece in musical theatre: Oklahoma!. It was the
first Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration, starting the most successful creative partnership in the
history of American musical theatre.

has been recognized as a new kind of musical play that denied its Broadway audiences many of their
most treasured traditions, says David Ewen in American Musical Theatre. There was no opening
chorus line, no chorus until midway through the first act, in fact. There was rather a serious ballet
and other serious overtones, including a killing in act two. The story, which was so simple, seemed
to engage the audience in more than mere evening diversion. (248) These changes, far from
disappointing to viewers, were upheld by a success that had never been seen in the history of
musical theatre.
He continued to say that with their first collaboration, Rodgers and Hammerstein ushered in a new
era for the musical theatre. This beautiful folk play realized fully that which the earlier Rodgers and
Hart musicals had been striving to obtain: a synchronization of all the elements of the musical
theatre into a single entity. At best Oklahoma! could lay legitimate claim to have carefully woven a
new element, dance, into the artful fabric of the modern musical. No longer would singers sing and
then go into their dance, a purely decorative dance at that. (248)
Dance was not a new element in the theatre realm. It had been used for years as a way of
interpretation of feelings of a character that the writer or director wanted the audience to feel
visually. Through movement, expression of those feelings was portrayed and helped the audience to

The History Of Broadway
Broadway 'Mamma Mia, The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked and many more have made the impact.
Broadway plays old and new, have been a part of many people's lives throughout history. Even from
its beginnings, Broadway and all of its productions have had a massive impact on society's art and

Effects Of Sondheim's Nonconformity On Musical Theatre
Sondheim's Nonconformity and Its Effect on Musical Theatre
Musical theatre performance, which presents fictional plots and impresses audiences with show–
stopping dance and song, unites dramatic works across the globe. American musical theatre,
specifically, draws inspiration from European straight plays, burlesques, and operas, while
dramatizing American topics. Nineteenth–century musical comedies use entertaining situations,
rather than plot, to frame performances involving song, dance, and humor. For example, George M.
Cohan's works, although inspired by European musical theatre, fail to please audiences as its unified
music and book neglect the plot. By the twentieth century, however, pioneers such as Oscar
Hammerstein II create musical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast to early American musical comedies, whose songs separate the characters from the
action, Sondheim carefully crafts his songs, with every word serving both the actor and the
audience. When writing a musical, he thinks as the character, attempting and usually succeeding at
portraying his situation. As Arthur Laurents, one of his collaborators, said, "Steve...is the only
lyricist who almost always writes songs for the characters they are written for" (Michener 384).
Since he writes the songs for the characters, each word has a specific purpose, but he still puts a
twist on established devices of musical theatre. Musical theatre often contains rhyme, but
Sondheim's rhymes provide emphasis because all rhymes "draw attention to the rhymed word"
(Sondheim, Finishing the Hat, xxvii). Since the songs' words signify a profound amount of meaning,
Sondheim makes sure that the lyrics and rhythms work for the character and the actor. "Getting
Married Today" in Company demonstrates this particularity. On Amy's wedding day, she
experiences doubt in marrying Paul, expressed through a fast–paced frenzy of thoughts and
emotions. So that this whirl of emotions does not become too chaotic, Sondheim's word choice
allows the actress playing Amy to capitalize on every word, as he calculates the song "to alternate
vowel and consonant sounds in such a way as to make them easy for the tongue, teeth, and breath to
articulate" (184). Thus, every word in "Getting Married Today" has a specific purpose, unlike the
lyrics of other musicals without such a careful word choice. While the audience needs to use the
lyrics to understand the plot, Sondheim's intelligence and wit leaves the audience "marveling at what
clever things he does with words" (Banfield 113). In his songs, Sondheim wants to show off his
literary skills while staying true to the

Fresh Off The Boat Analysis

  • 1. Fresh Off The Boat Analysis Fresh off the boat was created by Nahnatchka Khan. It is a comedy series starring Ranall Park, Constance Wu, and Hidson Yang. This show is the first Asian–American family Television show. There are a total of 30 episodes which is 2 seasons. The show was a huge hit that it got nominated as Young Artist Award and won. In the first episode "Fresh off the boat" we were introduced to a Chinese family that moves to suburban Orlando. It centers on the father who is obsessed with all things American, a mother who is bewildered by a "white culture" and a hip–hop–loving son (Eddie). In the beginning we get a glimpse of how the family feels about moving to Orlando. The mother is completely against it and the children are worried about fitting in. The father on the other hand is excited about opening his American Restaurant; that is the reason they moved in the first place. In the few days the family moved, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mother had to fit in with the "white women" in her neighborhood and had to be engaged with their daily routines. Eddie had problems of his own; the kids at his school did not understand why Eddie ate a "nasty lunch" and that caused Eddie to beg his mom to buy him American food so he can take it to lunch. The only one in the family who did not have troubles was the younger son who found a girlfriend on his first day at school. The show is something new I have not seen. It makes me realize of how different an American culture is to other foreigners. We are custom to this culture we do not see how other people have to struggle. The first episode in my opinion felt discrimination towards the Chinese family, because of how they had to change the way they lived just to fit in. Sometimes we are not aware of how other people that just moved to America have to go through and we expect them to already learn, and change their way just so we can be pleased. Overall the show was funny and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

" "The story for Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1949 musical South Pacific, is drawn from a Pulitzer– prize– winning novel by James A. Michener, entitled Tales of the South Pacific, which dealt largely with the issue of racism" (Kurtus). It is also considered by many people to be among the greatest musicals of the twentieth century (Kurtus). The Broadway production won ten Tony Awards, including four acting awards, and many of its songs went to have a life of their own outside of the musical (Kurtus). The musical inspired a 1958 film adaption and has enjoyed many successful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though it hasn't been seen on Broadway since the first run closed, South Pacific has been produced worldwide and made into two great films (Costa). Herring 5 "The hunger for optimism is never in short supply these days. Walnut Street Theatre brings life to an American classic in their current production of South Pacific under the direction of Charles Abbott, with choreography by Michelle Gaudette" (Diehl). This great taste of paradise has more to offer than escapism (Diehl). "The music was by Richard Rodgers and the lyrics were by Oscar Hammerstein II, South Pacific begins unflinchingly as a parade of some of America's favorite show tunes" (Diehl). Lightening the mood is full of handsome Seabees helmed by the mischievous Fran Prisco (Luther Billis). A very strong ensemble with a loud booming sound under the direction of John Daniels, they delight in antagonizing local merchant Bloody Mary (Lori Ton Chinn) when they are not aging the female nurses (Diehl). "While not a highly demanding ensemble show, everyone stationed on the island brings a welcomed bit of uniqueness to the group making the landscape feel all the more genuine" ... • 5. Gender is a Fundamental Element of the Broadway Musical Starting in the golden age of 1950, a Broadway musical's critical judgement depended on how well the show's elements were formally integrated. Meaning the outlook of the plot in relation to the music, lyrics and characterization of gender roles. Gender is a fundamental element of Broadway musical theatre, constitutional to the musical's architecture. It is essential as a building block for characters, music/lyrics, and stage settings. Broadway musical is a popular art, in which conveys social issues in the female gender from the representations of women in the 1950's to today. The Broadway musical participates in a larger conversation about gender and sexuality because it is a commercial, profit–seeking, artistic commodity, entertainment form, and cultural product. Broadway musical is a mainstream form that needs to relate to middle–class audiences' desires and expectations, one might expect only social issues and stereotypical representations of women. The female gender stereotypes are represented in Broadway musicals portrayed by the character's roles. As time went by, the portrayal of the female characters in musicals changed because of the representation that women in today receives. Thus, these musicals explore social issues of the day, including women's rights and changing roles in U.S. culture, sometimes directly and sometime obliquely. Therefore, the Broadway musical venerates female performers and provides substantial roles for women. Female characters and roles ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Narrative Essay: The Sioux City Boat Show Many wonderful Friday evening dances were enjoyed with my one and only black–haired girlfriend. The cost for the evening totaled thirty cents: five cents car fare each way to the Sioux City Boat Club in Riverside, plus two five cent ice cream sodas at Phillips Drug Store on Pierce Street. The evening ended as I walked the young lady home to 1211 Nebraska Street (the streetcars stopped their regular schedules early in the evening). One more plus for streetcars: men in the late afternoon would stand in front of Beck's Jewelry at the corner at 4th and Pierce and ogle the ladies who exposed their ankles as they lifted their long–skirted Victorian–era dresses to board the streetcars, which gave a big thrill to the onlookers. The automobile was just entering mass production, i.e. a mass of so–called manufacturers, which finally topped ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second floor balcony wrapped around three sides of the hall and was divided into curtained stalls where the big spenders and ladies–of–the–evening viewed the show. The curtains were opened or closed depending on the whims of the occupants. One event is vividly remembered. The Superintendent, Mr. Gaddis, was an old time "pick handle" boss and frequently cussed the laggards with a wide assortment of obscenities. My crew dug the trenches with long– handled shovels, and if any were unable to keep dirt in the air, they were promptly laid off, easily replaced by the unemployed sitting on the sidelines. There was a distinct depression following the losses engendered by the San Francisco earthquake and fire. The collapse of big insurance companies had a ripple effect, which caused widespread unemployment throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Analysis Of The Poem ' The Bay Of Naples ' When I was looking through 17th–18th century European artwork in the Norton Simon Museum, there was one piece of art that really stood out to me. That beautiful art piece was the Bay of Naples by Claude–Joseph Vernet. This piece stood out to me because of the beautiful scenery that is displayed and the deep serenity the piece gives me when I look at it. The Bay of Naples is a painting of a landscape that captures the daily life of the bay. The materials used for this painting was oil on canvas. Claude–Joseph Vernet made a painting that brings your attention to the foreground. In the front, there is a boat being boarded. Some of the people that are not boarding the boat are standing by the sea. In the sea, some boats are sailing off in the distance. One of the boats in the distance is a large boat that gives the illusion of being three–dimensional. The form gives this illusion because of the reflection in the sea. If you look in the lower–right, you can see the light from the sun illuminating the sky. This light is hidden behind a large mountain that also has a three–dimensional form. There is also lots of texture in the painting. Some texture is seen in the mountains and ground giving a rough look, and some is seen in the sea in the form of ripples. On top of the mountain in the lower–right, there is greenery that has an illusion of being light and feathery. In that mountain, there is an arch that makes the other side visible. In the far distance, you can see a faint ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Show Boat: Racial Injustice The United States was built on a history of racial injustices. From the Native Americans being bribed off of their land, Africans being kidnapped, shipped, and sold into slavery, Japanese internment, to the more recent wrongs of faux vigilante–type killings like that of an African American teen, Trayvon Martin, in Florida, and the alleged, police–involved killing of 18–year old, African American teen Michael Brown of Ferguson, MO. These are just a few of the entrenched ideologies that have haunted and continue to haunt the United States. With that being said, the arts have not been immune to the throws of racial strife, in particular, theatrical productions. The musical talents of Kern and Hammerstein, "...was the first true combination of music, lyrics, plot, and authentic characters in a theatrical work," (xroads, Virginia) used the music to move the plot along and character development. Performers sung songs for emotional affect and to show drama to a situation. For instance, Joe, the Cotton Blossom's dockworker, sang Ol' Man River, which allowed the audience to understand Joe's importance on the boat, but also his life as an observer of the shenanigans on and off of the Cotton Blossom. • 15. What Is The Most Memorable Moment In A Movie Lights, Curtain, Action The lights dimmed, the curtain lifted, and the actors came out. My excitement was growing, first starting in my throat, then working its way to my stomach. The sound of the instruments filled the theater as the actors start to sing in loud clear voices. This was how my most memorable moment in my childhood started, at the Times Union Center Theater in the last week of February. My interest in theater started when I was a little girl. In particular, it was a movie that started this love. I can still remember the day my father brought home that movie, The Phantom of the Opera. It was the first musical I watched that was not Disney. After watching it, I felt overwhelmed with all the emotions expressed in the movie. Of course, being as young as I was then, I was unable to quite understand the meaning in the movie but that was not a problem. I was more interested in the singing and dancing that was shown throughout the movie. It was this musical that influenced me to pursue a career in theater and movies. Even though I loved the musical so much I never did see it live. My family could not afford to buy tickets and very rarely did the show come to my hometown. That is until I was 17 when they came to the Times Union Center in Jacksonville. My sister and I were thrilled, but instantly our excitement died when we remembered that we do not have the money for tickets. The both of us decided to start coming up with ways to earn money, such as extra chores and odd jobs around the neighborhood. Slowly but surely we began to earn money. By the end of December, we were still short a couple hundred bucks and seats were selling out quickly. It was Christmas Day when the most wonderful thing happened. My family was opening up presents and it was my turn to open mines. My father handed me this large present and inside was a slightly smaller present and inside that was an even smaller present which inside contained an envelope. Inside of that envelope was a Christmas card with the inside saying "Soak up this moment!" Clipped to the side of the card was three tickets to The Phantom of the Opera. I was overjoyed, I let out a little squeal and could not stop thanking my parents. Finally, I can see the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Show Boat Sparknotes Show Boat Changes Its "Wicked Stage" On the night of December 27, 1927 the musical Show Boat opens (Laufe 475). The show ends in silence; no applause or a standing ovation. There was not even a curtain call. (Sheed 120) Producer Florenz Ziegfeld thought that the show had failed. (Sheed 120) What he did not know that night was that Show Boat was to go on to be one of the most influential shows in American musical theatre. Show Boat revolutionized American musical theatre by changing the setting of the average musical theatre work to America to make the show inherently American, by changing and challenging what topics could be discussed, and by making the songs an integrated part of the musical that emphasize the themes, express the emotions of the characters, and move the story along. Show Boat tells the story of a river boat named the Cotton Blossom that travels up and down the Mississippi River and the lives of the people on and surrounding the Cotton Blossom. The Cotton Blossom is run by Captain Andy who has a daughter named Magnolia Hawkes. Magnolia befriends Julie LaVerne, a performer on the ship. Upon stopping in one of the towns Julie is found out to be part black and is arrested on the charge of miscegenation and is forced to leave the ship. Magnolia also falls in love with a man from the same town named Gaylord Ravenal, and she ultimately leaves the boat with him and starts a new life. • 21. Show Boat History On December 27, 1927 when the premiere of Show Boat opened in the spectacular new Ziegfeld Theater, producer Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. had brought something new to Broadway. As Katherine Leigh Axtell writes, the show was "neither an operetta nor a musical comedy, neither a vaudeville nor a revue." For the first time, composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II seamlessly integrated plot, character, music, and dance into a modern musical production –– starting a new genre of musical, which is often called "musical theater" or "book musical." Show Boat also brought serious themes that left the audience unable to react the way they had to the previous Broadway musicals. For the first time, there was a breakthrough in racial integration. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 23. Musical Theatre As A Theatrical Performance Musical Theatre is a theatrical performance when the story is told through dialogue, song, and dance. Back then, people didn't Snap Chat, Face Time or watch TV for entertainment; they would go to the Theatre for a night out, first date, etc. To give a more definitive description of how musicals evolved, affected, and influenced throughout history, a time line of major musicals that defined certain stages of Musical Theatre will probably help people understand what makes it so unique. Now a quick history lesson, Musical Theatre technically was created in 5th Century BCE Ancient Greece, when staged comedies and tragedies would be told with a bit music and dance...but Musicals didn't fully emerge into the world until the early 20th Century when the art form went to London, England, and then to America, which formed the famous theatre district, Broadway. Now that the basics are covered of where Musical Theatre came from, this paper is more about how Broadway Musicals evolved into what they are in present day, how people have reacted to such performances, and how musical theatre has impacted not only America, but also the world. The first era of Musical Theatre actually started in the 1920's–1930's during the Great Depression. This was a the first time there were musicals other than the fun, young, and enjoyable shows, the first example of this would be the musical Show Boat, which premiered in December 1927, the music was by Jerome Kern, book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, ... Using literacy based instruction practices in combination with STEM education proved to be very helpful as well as engaging to my students. I feel this lesson motivated students to read more informational texts. By reading this story, students were intrigued about the other different kinds of boats there are and how they are made and work. This also encouraged students to use a fictional text to learn about real–world items. One student asked what other kinds of books we could read to inspire us to build things. Of all types of theater that were developed during that period, musical theater matured into a more respected and widely desired form of entertainment. Musical theater transformed from blackface minstrel shows with gag productions into pieces of reputable theater. One of the most influential productions in making that turn into sophistication is Showboat. Based on the novel by Edna Ferber Showboat was written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II (Smith 627). Showboat was premiered in the Ziegfeld Theatre on December 27, 1927 (Smith 627). Regardless of what any critic labels it, Showboat was a change in theater during a time when very little changes were being made. Many productions during the 1920's were diluted into a simple formula. Add in some dancing girls, gag tricks and "happy go lucky" musical numbers and one has a generic 1920's musical production. As stated by Stanley Green, "it [1920 era] was not a period distinguished by many changes in the structure of the musical comedy theatre. Of all the musicals written and produced during that decade, only Showboat was able to offer a truly adult libretto combined with superior music and lyrics" (2). Jerome Kern, the primary lyricist, started his writing career at The Princess Theatre where he made conscientious efforts to create a new form of musical comedy, but in his efforts only Showboat is considered a classic because it broke so many musical comedy taboos (Green 71). He was assisted by Oscar Hammerstein II in his efforts to mold Showboat into a new age production. Showboat's "musical integration and before it's time characterization has put itself in a class of its own; "[s]ome have gone so far as to say that if there is ever to be an American school of opera, this is the model upon which it must be based" (Howard 666). The major difference between Showboat and other productions of its time was the fluidity and depth Kern creates. Roy Hemming writes, "Kern's pioneering work in integrating songs and text ... For example, asians have a long history of being made fun of because of their thick accents. In Fresh Off the Boat, Eddie and his siblings speak like every other American kid. In fact, asian names are a common joke as well, but the show's characters have typical names. Media is an important source of information about a culture and media portrayals contribute to public perception (Hodan, 2015). The stage lighting played a key role in the show by setting the mood of the performance during soulful, pensive songs. In contrast, the lighting proved to be a detriment by overbearing the performance of the artists, in that one's attention was drawn to the glare of extreme quantities of makeup rather than the actions of the characters. Though by today's standards, its depiction of African–Americans may seem archaic at best, Show Boat changed the way audiences viewed musical theater through its success as the first show to deal with racial issues in the United States. In order to fully understand the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In her doctoral dissertation, Katherine Axtell examines Show Boat from its novel origins to its inception and creation as a work of musical theater. It is clear from her analysis that even though Hammerstein and Kern may not have intended Show Boat to be about race, it was still at the forefront of their minds. Axtell states, "sources...strongly suggest that, page for page and line for line, the composer and librettist expended the greatest energy on the development of material for the romantic leads, Magnolia and Ravenal; that they took inspiration...from contemporary African– American musical theater."6 Axtell also cites Todd Decker, "who in 2007 included Show Boat in a larger study of 'black–white encounters' in selected American stage and film musicals... Decker argues that Kern and Hammerstein concentrated, from the beginning of their collaboration, on the development of interracial encounters and the creation of such numbers as 'Can't Help Lovin; Dat Man' and 'Ol' Man River.'"7 It was, in fact, "Ol' Man River" that many believed to be the highlight of the show. Sung by the African–American character, Joe, "Ol' Man River" represents the overarching theme of Show Boat. The "river" in the song represents the Mississippi River, but the lyrics ... • 57. The Importance Of Weather Conditions In The Sea Any experienced captain will tell you that weather conditions play a huge roll in decision making while navigating any vessel. Seaworthiness does not rely on the size of your boat. How your boat handles weather conditions are taken into consideration during the design and construction process. Using your boat for what it is designed to do is key. Voyages into water ways and harsh weather that your boat cannot handle can be disastrous. Different levels of experience determine your ability to handle weather conditions. One boater may find certain heavy weather conditions to be manageable while another may not. The type of waterway you're operating on has much to do with how treacherous weather conditions will become. Navigating in deep, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The zig–zag approach will enable you to leave your boat in the trough long enough to turn. You need to minimize the time in the trough and being broad side by the swell, so you do not broach. Running with the swell behind you When running in front of the sea,, the swell comes from behind you and this can be challenging. The stern can be swept and pushed side to side. Keep the stern perpendicular to the oncoming seas to navigate these conditions. Being lifted by heavy seas is reason for concern. Boats tend fall quickly down the slope crest to trough. When the stern is high your propeller could rise out of the water. If the rudder loses contact with the flow of water, it will be left useless. Your boat could yaw to one side and broach into the trough. Sliding down the wave fast enough to bury the bow is another reason for concern. Pitchpoling can exists when the stern is being pushed. To take the swells off one quarter and the other try tacking before the seas. When running before the seas consider towing a drogue to slow your speed. This will allow the helmsman an easier time control the stern in the proper position. The heaving to maneuver When conditions are become violent beyond your control, you and the boat are taking too much force it's time to for the heaving to maneuver. Depending on the type of boat, this maneuver keeps the bow in to the wind or a tad off the wind and waves. When in a power boat forget where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The audio in films completes what our eyes expect to see. In fact, sound brings the scene together because, without the audio, our minds could not reasonably finish the scene. This particular art form began in 1927, when a Universal employee, Jack Foley helped turn the film studios silent film Show Boat into a musical. Because the microphones only picked up the dialogue, Foley added the sounds later. First, he projected the film onto a screen and recorded the movement, footsteps, the props all on one track and basically acted out the movie again, adding sound. • 63. High Island Research Paper I've been going to the same summer camp for six years and most years we canoe out to High Island, which is about a mile away from the camp, or a 45 minute paddle. I've never had much luck going out to the island. One year it was so windy we had to stop at a town dock and be driven back to camp because the winds were so strong, and the water was so choppy. Another year my canoe was dented, which dramatically affected the tracking so we had to be tied to a counselor's canoe and brought back to camp. With the strong memories of those trips I was worried when my counselor in training program required a three day camping trip to High Island, meaning a canoe trip out with lots of supplies. For our group of four guys, four girls, and two counselors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While my friends paddled away, Sophia and I were blown around by the wind, and wouldn't get to the island in the predicted time window. We stopped at a dock and quickly were able to switch positions, so I was in the front of the boat, and sophia was in the back. This helped a lot but, we were coming upon a part of the route where we had to travel past an area where two islands allowed strong winds to come through. We paddled hard, not caring about the calluses or sore arms, just trying to get where we needed to be. Once our boat passed the channel of wind, we paddled our way past the choppy water and found our way to the island shore where Liam and Ethan were waiting. They helped us unpack and tie up the boat, when our counselor noticed a broken part of the boat. The yoke or middle beam of the boat was broken, which he explained, was extremely dangerous, and most likely why it was so hard to get to the island. Whenever we traveled in the canoe from that trip on we couldn't have much extra weight in the boat, and we had a designated rescue boat. The day after we arrived on the island we paddled to a quarry next to Liam and Ethan, and did the same the day after that when we went back to camp. This trip showed me that road trips are seen as an American tradition because it shows how a journey can change people and in circumstances they can sometimes relate to. Although I was ... • 65. Compare And Contrast The American Musical Theatre In The... Compare and contrast the American musical theatre in the 1920s with that of the 1930s. How did each reflect and absorb its era? What forms & styles were dominant, what was the same, what was different and why? Do we see elements from these decades in shows today? Use examples from specific musicals. In the 1920's, musical theater was "roaring" just like the economic situation in the United States. Florenz Ziegfeld was at his peak, buying shows and catapulting them to the forefront of pop culture. The most popular songs on the radio were songs that were written and performed in broadway shows. The subway station had just opened in times square and people came rushing to the theaters. Rag–time was the popular genre at the time and Jazz musicians were working on their own genre just blocks away. Prohibition caused the rise of the speakeasy and as a result, people of different social classes were interacting. People were looking for entertainment that matched the change in people's sensibilities. During this period, musicals (which were labeled "musical comedies" at the time) were in the form of acceptable of guilty pleasures – the appeal of women and their sexuality, silly characters that made fools of themselves, or the goofy country girl dancing through the chores of the day. Ziegfeld's Follies, Marx brother shows, and Al Jolson playing his character in blackface are great examples of these shows that focused on showing off the stars and gave little care to the ... This piece of art really caught my eye when I entered the gallery because I am a huge fan of boats. Titanic is my favorite movie and cruises are my favorite vacations, and one of my major goals in life is to own a yacht. So, when I saw this piece of a woman with a boat on her head, I was perplexed, but also curious. My first thoughts about the meaning of the piece was that the woman was the mom of the two children in the boat. The weight of her children had really weight her down to the point where she is crying and rather tattered looking. Lastly, I thought the nonhuman creatures may have been pets ... • 69. The Motorcycle Diaries, Natural Lighting And Quick Camera... In The Motorcycle Diaries, natural lighting and quick camera movements are consistent layers in the filming technique used. To evoke a greater sense of importance in certain scenes, directional lighting is used. An important and foreshadowing scene in the film, the ferry from Pucallpa, Peru to the leper colony shows the division of wealth through soft natural lighting and the use of shadows. This particular scene uses an important element of mise–en–scene, lighting, to create a powerful, suggestive introduction to the culmination of their voyage. The 1–minute sequence is free of dialogue, but conveys necessary information through subliminal filming techniques. The scene begins with a wide, overhead crane landscape shot that encapsulates town they're leaving in a shadow, while the ferry is surrounded by bright, natural light, heading towards the unknown. This particular shadowing may infer they're leaving the past behind, while the engulfing bright light may indicate a positive future in their travels. The next shot is a lower side shot that shows the expansive river and the ferry with a small–unidentified boat trailing behind. This scene is void of any structures other than the forest behind the two boats. Slowly, the boats move down the river with beautiful, soft side lighting from the natural sunset. The use of this lighting induces a personal connection with the ferry and its respective travels. Different from a typical Hollywood scene, the side lighting allows for ... • 71. The Rebirth Of American Musical Theatre Essay Two great writers of American musical theatre, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, had one idea in common. They wanted to present to the American public a new and revolutionary musical that would stand out above the rest. They wanted to make an impact on the societies of the era. They wanted to be creative and do something that was considered rebellious. When they finally combined their ideas together they created an American masterpiece in musical theatre: Oklahoma!. It was the first Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration, starting the most successful creative partnership in the history of American musical theatre. According to Joseph Swain in his book The Broadway Musical: A Critical and Musical Survey, there are a number of ... There was no opening chorus line, no chorus until midway through the first act, in fact. There was rather a serious ballet and other serious overtones, including a killing in act two. The story, which was so simple, seemed to engage the audience in more than mere evening diversion. (248) These changes, far from disappointing to viewers, were upheld by a success that had never been seen in the history of musical theatre. He continued to say that with their first collaboration, Rodgers and Hammerstein ushered in a new era for the musical theatre. This beautiful folk play realized fully that which the earlier Rodgers and Hart musicals had been striving to obtain: a synchronization of all the elements of the musical theatre into a single entity. At best Oklahoma! could lay legitimate claim to have carefully woven a new element, dance, into the artful fabric of the modern musical. No longer would singers sing and then go into their dance, a purely decorative dance at that. (248) Dance was not a new element in the theatre realm. It had been used for years as a way of interpretation of feelings of a character that the writer or director wanted the audience to feel visually. Through movement, expression of those feelings was portrayed and helped the audience to somewhat ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Love Boat Show Analysis Love Boat– Week 6 Presentation Script By Lucas da Paz This presentation draws to a greater extent on the problem of jurisdiction, which particular crimes primarily happen on cruise ships as well as analysing The Love Boat TV series to draw on the hidden meanings behind the show and themes that are conveyed. The Love Boat The Love Boat show is about the characters dealing with their problems like getting a 'lack of 'love as described by Cathy Schwichtenberg in her readings. It is about the characters going on a 'love boat journey' whilst encountering problems such as finding the wrong lover based off mistaken identities (Schwichtenberg,1984). 'Love is a complex, abstract relation between two people (Schwitchenberg,1984).However, in the Love Boat tv series, 'love' is objectified and can be 'bought', it is another commodity when linked with another object 'a boat' with the ultimate reward of love being exchanged with money for a cruise, creating the false pretence and idea that 'love can be bought' (Schwichtenberg,1984). • 77. Effects Of Sondheim's Nonconformity On Musical Theatre Sondheim's Nonconformity and Its Effect on Musical Theatre Musical theatre performance, which presents fictional plots and impresses audiences with show– stopping dance and song, unites dramatic works across the globe. American musical theatre, specifically, draws inspiration from European straight plays, burlesques, and operas, while dramatizing American topics. Nineteenth–century musical comedies use entertaining situations, rather than plot, to frame performances involving song, dance, and humor. For example, George M. Cohan's works, although inspired by European musical theatre, fail to please audiences as its unified music and book neglect the plot. By the twentieth century, however, pioneers such as Oscar Hammerstein II create musical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast to early American musical comedies, whose songs separate the characters from the action, Sondheim carefully crafts his songs, with every word serving both the actor and the audience. When writing a musical, he thinks as the character, attempting and usually succeeding at portraying his situation. As Arthur Laurents, one of his collaborators, said, "Steve...is the only lyricist who almost always writes songs for the characters they are written for" (Michener 384). Since he writes the songs for the characters, each word has a specific purpose, but he still puts a twist on established devices of musical theatre. Musical theatre often contains rhyme, but Sondheim's rhymes provide emphasis because all rhymes "draw attention to the rhymed word" (Sondheim, Finishing the Hat, xxvii). Since the songs' words signify a profound amount of meaning, Sondheim makes sure that the lyrics and rhythms work for the character and the actor. "Getting Married Today" in Company demonstrates this particularity. On Amy's wedding day, she experiences doubt in marrying Paul, expressed through a fast–paced frenzy of thoughts and emotions. So that this whirl of emotions does not become too chaotic, Sondheim's word choice allows the actress playing Amy to capitalize on every word, as he calculates the song "to alternate vowel and consonant sounds in such a way as to make them easy for the tongue, teeth, and breath to articulate" (184). Thus, every word in "Getting Married Today" has a specific purpose, unlike the lyrics of other musicals without such a careful word choice. While the audience needs to use the lyrics to understand the plot, Sondheim's intelligence and wit leaves the audience "marveling at what clever things he does with words" (Banfield 113). In his songs, Sondheim wants to show off his literary skills while staying true to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
