Grant vs Mcclellan Comare and Contrast
1. Describe the different approaches to waging war of Grant and McClellan, utilizing Grant's campaign in the West and McClellan's maneuvers in
Virginia.
During the American Civil War, leadership within the Union's army was constantly an issue. Within the Union, various generals were found at times
to be at odds with the political leaders in Washington. This was especially evident in the relationship between General George McClellan and
President Lincoln. This tension was the result of McClellan's approach to waging war. By examining the differing approaches to waging war of U.S.
Grant and George B. McClellan one can gain a better appreciation for the decision making that was necessary by leaders like Lincoln, in selecting

He suffered what some might refer to in today's vernacular as something akin to "analysis paralysis." (McPherson, 1988, pp. 361–365)
McClellan's caution in waging war is evidenced clearly in the Army of the Potomac's Peninsula Campaign. McClellan was charged with leading the
assault on Richmond, delivering what could have been a fatal blow against the Confederacy. During the Army of the Potomac's movements towards
Richmond, McClellan repeatedly delayed, believing he had inferior numbers to his initial adversary, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. Johnston
knew the caution McClellan was prone to, and slowly drew McClellan closer to Confederate forces defending Richmond. At the Battle of Seven Pines,
Johnston reinforced the idea in McClellan's mind that caution was necessary. (McPherson, 1988, p. 461) The surprise attach by Johnston's forces,
though ultimately defeated by the Army of the Potomac, delayed McClellan's advance as he called for more reinforcements from Washington. Johnston
was wounded in the battle, and replaced by General Robert E. Lee. Lee, whose prowess as a tactician bordered on legendary, led a series of surprise
attacks against McClellan's Army of the Potomac in the Seven Days' Battle. McClellan's forces were pushed back, and he was relieved of duty as
commander of the Army of the Potomac, until later in 1862. (McPherson, 1988, pp. 462–470)

Compare And Contrast Mcclellan And Lee
Both General McClellan and Lee where the commander's for both the north and south at the beginning of the war. General Lee was President
Lincoln's first choice to command the Union forces. McClellan was hired and fired by President Lincoln where General Lee commanded the south
from beginning to the end of civil war. General McClellan was more of a politician and took analyzed risks, and took a cautious approach to war.
General Lee's military viewpoint was offensive, take the fight to the north not a defensive stance. General McClellan was not a great commander during

McPherson and Hearn on Abraham Lincoln Essay
The presidency of Abraham Lincoln came during a highly radical and chaotic period of American history. For historians such as James McPherson,
they see Lincoln as the greatest leader in American history. For McPherson, Lincoln succeeded in combining military pragmatism with the political
ideologies of the North, as well as Lincoln's own idealism, thus assuring Northern victory. However, not all historians agree that Lincoln was a
masterful tactician. Chester Hearn, believes that although Abraham Lincoln was one of America's most venerable statesmen, his presidency was
marked by flaws and a general misunderstanding of how war is waged. McPherson's Tried by War and Hearn's Lincoln, The Cabinet and the Generals,
make the argument for each of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although Hearn does not entirely refute the commonly view of Lincoln as a brilliant tactician and morally inspired leader, he also provides many
examples of Lincoln's failures. Many of the policies, which McPherson celebrates, Hearn depicts as misguided and desperate.
Although James McPherson presents Lincoln as having numerous qualities that defined him as a brilliant leader, he wastes no time in revealing what
he believes to be Lincoln's greatest strength. In his Introduction, McPherson states regarding Lincoln's political leadership: "In a civil war whose
origins lay in a political conflict over the future of slavery and a political decision by certain states to secede, policy could never be separated from
national strategy.... And neither policy nor national strategy could be separated from military strategy" (McPherson, p.6). Lincoln could not approach
the war from a purely martial standpoint–instead, he needed to focus on the issues that caused it. For the catalyst of the war was also the tool for its
solution; a war started by differing ideologies could only be resolved through the military application of ideology. This non–objective approach to the
waging of the war almost resembles the inspired approach McPherson brings to his examination of Lincoln himself.
For Hearn, Lincoln's true level of tactical skill is hard to discern due to the legendary status that history has given him. In response to this confusion,

Failure of Mission Command by General McClellan Essay
The Battle of Antietam could have been a devastating and fatal blow to the Confederate Army if Gen. McClellan acted decisively, took calculated
risks, and veered away from his cautious approach to war. There are many instances leading up to the battle and during the battle in which he lacks
the necessary offensive initiative to effectively cripple and ultimately win the war. This paper is intended to articulate the failure of Mission
Command by GEN McClellan by pointing out how he failed to understand, visualize, describe and direct the battlefield to his benefit. GEN McClellan
may not have been a great war time General but he excelled at training Soldiers, getting his men ready to fight and raising the morale of the Armies he...

As is noted from the quote above, questions were raised about Gen McClellan's inability to lead an Army during a time of war. Only because of
uncertainty of the Union Army after GEN Pope's defeat on September 1 at Second Bull Run did McClellan live to Command during Antietam. For all
of GEN McClellan's ability to rally the Soldiers to fight, his inability to garner the trust and confidence in his generals proved pivotal during the battle.
Stephen Sears depicts McClellan as only trusting two of his six Corps commanders. The testing of battle uncovered another McClellan failing – his
management of his own generals. Of his six corps commanders, he displayed confidence in only two, Fitz John Porter and Joseph Hooker. He had
termed 65–year–old Edwin Sumner "even a greater fool than I had supposed," and regarded William Franklin as slow and lacking in energy. He had
recently rebuked Ambrose Burnside for his tepid pursuit of the Rebels after the fighting at South Mountain. Joseph Mansfield, new to command, was an
unknown quantity. McClellan called no council of his generals to explain his intentions, issued no plan of battle, and on September 17 conferred at
length only with Fitz John Porter.

What Is Sears Thesis For The Battle Of Antietam
The Confederate invasion of the North in September of 1862 was an attempt by Robert E. Lee to swing the war in favor of the South. The main
reason for the Confederate invasion was that the British were on the verge of recognizing the Confederacy if they could show it could hold its own,
and Lee was anxious to provide a cornerstone for the Confederacy to build upon. The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest day in American history and
was a major blow to the Army of Northern Virginia and the morale of the south. This is the tableau against which our story unfolds.
Stephen W. (Ward) Sears was born July 27th, 1932 in Ohio. He is a pre–eminent American historian specializing in all facets of the Civil War. He
graduated from Oberlin College in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sears uses language that most all of us can understand, and clearly it is a very well researched work. He supports his claims in the book with a
copious amount of facts and yet still keeps the course of the book moving forward. He draws on a variety of sources including diaries and letters of
the participants to produce, arguably, his definitive work. Sears thesis is actually two–fold; one that McClellan missed countless opportunities to defeat
Lee and two that McClellan was an incompetent commander who missed several instances to take initiative and win the battle decisively. The young
Napoleon, as McClellan was known, often waited an inordinate amount of time before making a movement with his troops. For me, reading the details
(with heavy emphasis to the Union story) was captivating. No recon, no communication, egotistical leadership, timidity, and procrastination all
combined and helped the Union snatch defeat (or, at the very least, a draw) from the jaws of victory. This battle, like others before and after it, could
have really shortened the Civil War.
On the other hand, Sears holds Lee in high esteem. Though taking unnecessary risks at times, he manages to skillfully avoid being crushed at the hands
of a numerically superior opponent. According to Sears, Antietam proved a tactical victory for the Army of Northern Virginia, "It had beaten back a foe
much superior in manpower and ordinance

Essay Lincoln and His Generals Book Report
Lincoln and His Generals Book Review Lincoln and His Generals is a book by Thomas Williams that focuses on the Civil War as being the first
modern war and the way President Lincoln lead his divided nation during this dark historic time. Williams introduces the Union army as one that has
no shape to it. This includes the lack of any plan of attack, as the thought of war had not been converted into any type of scheme. The armies lacked
organization and communication, and existing generals were old and incompetent. The first task that Lincoln had was the immediate selection of
Generals. Lincoln's selection process was sometimes based on political and personal grounds, and he was in the position of selecting from a pool of
generals... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Williams shows us that Lincoln never hesitated in making difficult decisions based on results. Lincoln's people skills are clearly established in
Williams's writings. Lincoln seems keen at applying pressure as well as giving his generals a free hand when necessary. Williams shows that
Lincoln's patience does wear thin when there are no early victories and the lack of aggressiveness on the Union side. Williams shows a gradual
transformation on Lincoln's selection process. Initially each general was selected on characteristics such as battle experience and political backing. As
the enemy holds out and there is inaction, Lincoln starts to doubt the ability of his generals and starts to seek generals who can win without excuses.
Williams describes the pressure that is placed on Lincoln. The union government and the public were questioning the inactivity of McClellan and his
troops. Lincoln was willing to absorb most of this pressure but eventually seeks answers to the same questions. Williams shows the desperate side of
Lincoln. Lincoln starts to recklessly allow attack plans that he did not always agree with, just because he was desperate to see action from McClellan.
Williams indicates that Lincoln is a misunderstood man through the eyes of his Generals. His chief general McClellan thought little of him and had
doubts about Lincoln early on. Union Generals sometimes failed at getting

Clarisse Mcclellan In Fahrenheit 451 : Character Analysis
Clarisse McClellan is an important character in the novel Fahrenheit 451 because of her personal feelings and actions on herself and others. Clarisse, a
17–year–old girl who lived in a supposed utopia positively affected Guy Montag's views on the government.. As a result of growing up in a peculiar
family, she stuck out in society. She was an only child who lived with her mother, father, and uncle. Unusual things would happen in their home such
as the lights being on at night, having conversations about events going on in their time, and her family's criminal record. In this society, people go to
jail for being unconventional. Their way of life intrigued Montag and drew him to pay more attention to their odd way of life. "Montag heard the
voices talking, talking, talking, giving, talking, weaving, reweaving their hypnotic web." (14). The family prefers discussing real issues and have
normal human communication skills which allowed Clarisse to gain her large spectrum of knowledge. When the other children went to school,
Clarisse did her own learning about the outside world. Her appearance along with her personality was extremely distinct. "Her face was slender and
milk–white, and in it was a kind of gentle hunger that touched over everything with tireless curiosity" (3). Clarisse had a magnetic personality that
opened up Guy Montag's mind to new ideas. She asked curious questions about the world around her and was extremely observant. Clarisse would take

15 May 2015 The Anaconda Plan 's Effect on The Civil War From 1861
–1865 the Civil War was fought to determine the survival of the independent
Confederacy. In January 1861, seven Southern slave states seceded from the United States of America to create the Confederate States of America
("Civil War AcademyAmerican Civil War"). The twenty three states that remained loyal were called the Union. War was declared on April 12, 1861
between the North and South due to the controversial issue of slavery and its extension in Western territories. Following the first attack on April 12,
1861 at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, Union General Winfield Scott proposed the Anaconda plan to defeat the South. Instead of attacking the South
with a vast number of troops and killing everyone in sight, this three–part plan aimed to fight the rebellion in a more humane way, with least amount of
casualties possible. The strategy of the plan was to use the Navy to blockade Southern ports to prevent imports/exports, control the Mississippi River,
splitting the confederacy in two, and to capture the Confederate capital at Richmond, VA. Although the Anaconda plan was not directly successful, it
led to similar approaches by Union Generals McClellan, Sherman, and Grant. This system was called 'The Anaconda Plan ' for its snake–like strategy
of crushing the life out of the Confederacy. Scott presented his strategy in letters

General Mclellan Dbq
General McClellan was a famous general during the civil war who lead the Army of the Potomac. President Lincoln wanted him to move forward
towards Richmond but General McClellan would hold back until he was finally ordered to move. Him being removed can be considered a loss
but it also was a victory for the people back in Washington. George McClellan was somewhat of a perfectionist he would not do anything till the
time he didn't have it all figured out, also he was never sure and doubted himself. Another thing that caused him issues is that he overestimated the
abilities and manpower of his enemies. George McClellan was considered to be a perfectionist and would never take the next step until everything
else wasn't all figured out. He wanted more reinforcements but President Lincoln had to explain to him that this would not be a wise move. The
amount of time it would take President Lincoln to get him reinforcements would be enough for the "rebels" or the confederates to gain upon him and
be able to take him on easily. Even though President Lincoln stayed calm he was still impatient, he ordered McClellan and said he must move. This is
because if the orders were not given McClellan would have stayed back and would doubt him self upon when to move. [Document A and B]... Show

He can be considered one of the reason to make the union wait longer for its victory. McClellan kept fearing the amount of soldiers that Lee would
bring and was slowing down instead of moving towards the Confederate capital in Richmond. He slowed down because he thought that his army was
unfit for battle and wanted more reinforcements. President Lincoln even tried to assure him and helped him strategize by telling him that he must think
like his enemy and if he continues to do what he is instructed to do he will achieve his goal in no time. [ Documents G and

The Battle of Antietam Essay
September 16–18, 1862, outside of the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland, between the Potomac River and Antietam Creek, was the location of the
bloodiest battle in American history. Confederate Colonel Stephen D. Lee described it as "Artillery Hell" because of the frightful toll on his gunners
and horses from Federal counter battery and infantry fire. (AotW, 2014) Thebattle of Antietam, or the Battle of Sharpsburg, would collect an estimated
23,100 total casualties (Luvaas and Nelson, 1987). The body count far exceeded any of the other three battles waged in the Maryland Campaign
(Harpers Ferry, South Mountain, and Shepherdstown). This battle was a contributing factor in the outcome of our country and the rest of the world.

Civil War: Many notable Officers served during the Antietam battle that shaped the outcome of the Civil War. Major General George B. McClellan
commanded the Federal Army comprised of 87,164 troops and 275 artillery cannons, while General Robert E. Lee commanded the Confederate Army
with 41,000 troops and 194 guns. (Alexander, 2013). Along with notable Officers, there was notable Non–Commissioned Officers (NCO). One such
NCO, who received a battlefield commission, was "Commissary Sergeant William McKinley (later President) of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry who
distinguished himself during the Battle of Antietam for getting needed rations to his men during the heat of battle." (Elder, 2003)

cultures, differences in climate and differences in geography. Their differences really became a problem when talks about the gaining of Nebraska
and Kansas as states and whether they should be slave or Free State. During the time before the Civil War, the slaves worked hard with no pay. The
treatment of slaves was harsh and they never were treated as U.S. citizens. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln became president with the Republican Party,

What Does Clarisse Mcclellan Mean In Fahrenheit 451
Is it right for society to be in charge of what everyone has to say and do if they do not want to be an outcast? Many people follow whatever is
popular in society because they do not want to be the one who does not fit in. In Fahrenheit 451, everyone follows a certain standard. People are
not allowed to keep books in their houses because they will inspire people to be different. If people are suspected to, or have, books, the
government hires firemen to come burn people's houses down. Citizens drive so fast they must have ten lanes of road to help the traffic flow and
billboards 200 feet long so people can see them as they drive. Society is only in control because people do not try to be different or change it. Clarisse

moving around and doing something different to have fun. She is viewed as being antisocial because asking questions, talking to other people,
thinking, or even being a pedestrian outside is viewed as different. "I tell them sometimes I just sit and think...I've got them running," (23). She
tells Montag she is afraid of other kids her age because they kill each other and do not care if they are hurting anyone else (30). She enjoys being
outside and pays attention to details such as the dew on the ground in the morning and thinks people cannot tell what grass looks like because it is
all a blur as they drive by. "There's dew on the grass in the morning," (9). She is a threat to the ideas about society in the novel because she is more

The Anaconda Plan In 1861
At the onset of the war in 1861, plans were already being developed by both sides on how to defeat the other in the shortest amount of time. The Union
was faced with trying to defeat a secession without destroying the Confederate States with the ultimate goal of returning the states to the Union. One
suggestion was made by the standing General–in Chief of the U.S. Army,Winfield Scott, to President Lincoln and later deemed the "Anaconda Plan".
The plan would not be put in action until 1862 and would contribute to the degrading of the Confederacy's ability to wage war and ultimate surrender to
the Union. In 1861, Winfield Scott the standing General–in–Chief of the U.S. Army developed a plan to slowly and passively defeat the Confederacy in

The Battle Of Malvern Hill
The Battle of Malvern Hill:
Field Artillery played a significant role in many battles during the Civil War. The Battle of Malvern Hill is one such instance. Located in Henrico
County VA, Malvern Hill sits South East of Richmond just north of the James River. This battle is part of The Peninsula Campaign (March

1862) and more specifically the Seven Days Battle. The Seven Days Battle was a series of six battles starting on June 25, 1862 at The Battle of
Oak Grove and ending at Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862. During the battle, artillery in both armies had a drastic effect on the outcome whether good
or bad. In this paper, we will discuss the initial disposition of troops as well as the challenges faced by each army, the actions taken once hostilities
initiated and the outcome of the battle. In conclusion, we will discuss the lessons learned from this battle as it pertains to the Field Artillery as well as
the relevance of the lessons learned to the modern day battlefield.

The Battle Of Antietam By Robert E. Lee
The Battle of Antietam was battled on September 17, 1862. Union armed force led by General George B. McClellan battled against the Confederate
Army led by General Robert E. Lee. The fight was battled along the Antietam Creek close Sharpsburg, Maryland. The union armed force lost more than

McClellan started his military profession by entering the United States Military Academy in 1842. He graduated second in a class of 59 in 1846. He
was selected as a brevet second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers and served under General Winfield Scott during the Mexican–American War. Upon

The Seven Days Campaign Of 1862
The Seven Days Campaign of 1862 was a sequence of battles that took place along the Virginia Peninsula east of Richmond, between the Union Army
of the Potomac and the Confederate Virginia Army from 26 June through 2 July. The campaign consisted of the following six battles: Mechanicsville,
Gaines ' Mill, and Savage Station, engagement at Oak Swamp Bridge, and battles of Frazier 's Farm and Malvern Hill over a seven–day period. Major
General George B. McClellan led the Union Army of nearly 104,000 soldiers, while the newly appointed commander, General Robert Edward Lee led
the Confederate Army of nearly 92,000 soldiers during this campaign. General Lee's major objective was to protect and defend the City of Richmond
against the Union Army. General Lee's usage of the mission command principles and battlefield management during the Seven Days Campaign secured
a quick and significant victory for the Army of Northern Virginia, and drove the Major General McClellan Union troops to retreat down the Virginia
Peninsula. His ability to build a cohesive team through mutual trust, provide a clear commander's intent, create shared understanding, and accept
prudent risk led to the successful defense of Richmond. General Lee's triumph in those seven days remains among the most important battles in the

Callum shouldered his sack, eyes focused on the back of the man before him, trying not to think about the ache in his feet, the soreness of his back, the
grime that layered his body. "Just keep marching, keep moving" Callum repeated in his head like a mantra.
Callum could see in the distance beyond the trees the faint outlines of green hills. Hills that he last remembered were bathed in red and flesh. Over a
year has passed since the First Battle of Bull Run and so much as changed since then. With a lack of manpower and volunteers, the Confederacy
issued a draft for all men of age. Of course, Callum could have bought his way out of the draft, if it were not for his rat bastard of a father. Said war
would put some hair on his chest – that it would be good for him and then refused to cover the draft fees.
So here Callum was, trudging alongside several thousand men under General Lee's command. The Union has been trying to gain control of Virginia
since the very inception of the war. After Virginia joined the Confederacy, it was rewarded with the Confederate capitol in Richmond due to its industry
and factories. His hometown was the only large–scale industrial city in the Confederacy. Having the capitol and the bulk of the army here allowed for
easy restocking of supplies. It was a logistically sound move, but also a dangerous one.
Virginia lies at the border of the Confederacy and the Union, not even a hundred miles south of the Union's capital in Washington. Losing

The Battle Of The American Civil War
On September 17, 1862, the Union and Confederate armies met near the Maryland village of Sharpsburg in a battle that still remains the single
bloodiest day in American history. The battle consisted of many attacks and counterattacks between Union General George B. McClellan and The
Army of the Potomac against Confederate Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Confederates
managed to fight relentlessly over the course of the struggle. However, after losing over a quarter of his forces, the following day General Lee pulls his
army and retreats back to Virginia, ending the Confederate offensive attack. Although theBattle of Antietam was not a complete victory for the Union,

On the other hand, the battle and the Confederate retreat increased the morale in northern soldiers and civilians, including the Army of the Potomac.
After months of despair and despondency, spirits and confidence had been lifted in the North. Newspapers and press rejoiced of the great victory
and spoke of the wonderful outcomes the Nation will experience as a result for centuries to come. For instance, one daily newspaper, the New York
Herald, declared that "the battle of Antietam has broken the back of the rebellion [and] changed the tide of affairs, and victory now attends us
everywhere." (138) This battle was the first time that the North had fought upon their own territory and soldiers, and civilians of western Maryland,
began to feel a deep–seated American patriotism. FINAL SENTENCE??? Another significant outcome of Antietam was the issuing of President
Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Two months earlier, Lincoln had called a meeting with the Cabinet to announce his intentions of
issuing an Emancipation Proclamation. However, at this time, for both domestic and foreign reasons, members of the Cabinet counseled Lincoln to
postpone issuing the proclamation until the Union was again experiencing military success. The Battle of Antietam proved to be the military victory
that Lincoln and the Cabinet needed. On September

Election Of 1864 Essay
The Election of 1864 was important for many reasons, including the outcome of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln's assassination, and the first
Presidential Re–Elect since 1832. Abraham Lincoln ran for the Union Party and ran against General George B McClellan and John Fremont. Lincoln
was very pessimistic about his chances of winning the Presidential race, as evidenced by the memorandum he penned, stating what he would do in the
very likely event that he was not re–elected. The victories in Atlanta and Cedar Creek boosted Lincoln's chances of winning immensely. Lincoln
eventually won with a 55/45 split of the popular vote and an electoral landslide. His election eventually lead to the North's victory in the Civil War and

North's victory. After the North emerging victorious, slavery was abolished (Achenbach). Lincoln was the first presidential re–elect since Andrew

The Rise and Fall of George McClellan Essay
George B. McClellan is famous in history because of his involvement with the civil war. He was a powerful general who was hired, and fired by
Abraham Lincoln. George was born on December 3rd in 1826, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was born the son of a prominent surgeon, and a
caring mother. He was also the grandson of the Revolutionary War General, Samuel McClellan. He married the daughter of a powerful Pennsylvania
family. They had 5 children, two girls and three boys. When George McClellan attended the University of Pennsylvania at age 13 in 1840, he was
studying law. Two years later he changed direction, and decided to go into the military. He asked his father to write a letter to the President of the

He graduated from his class in 1846, only coming in second due to poor drawing skills. He was commissioned as a Brevet Second Lieutenant in the
US Army Corps of Engineers. McClellan's first military action was in the Mexican–American war. He frequently complained that he was too late to
join in on the American victory. While in Mexico, he received many medals and awards for his services as a brave engineer. He received much
experience on the battlefield and it helped his military performance. After the war, he performed 'peacetime service,' training young cadets at West
Point, working on the construction of a fort, and surveying land for the Transcontinental Railroad. While George was living in Ohio, he became
quite popular. The Civil War had started and there was a need for a powerful Union general. George was asked by Governors of his state and
surrounding states to become the general of volunteer Soldiers. The general in his home state of Ohio was the most persuasive out of the three states
that approached him. It was for Ohio that he agreed to serve. He won some small battles near Ohio, which brought national attention upon him. The
North had about everything the South had, but bigger and better. Everything but one thing; Generals. The North was lacking some good Generals to
lead the war, and with all of George's success, Lincoln approached him and asked him if he would like to be in the Civil War. Of

Economics, Political, And Union Leadership
Economics, political viewpoint, and union leadership were the primary reason the union won the war. Although, Abraham Lincoln, committed to the
preservation of the union, his leadership was not the primary reason the north won. The union economy had an advantage to winning the war over the
south. The northern states had more money; which allowed them to increase their assets, such as, their industries, technologies, as well as
transportation. The North acquired their money by raising loans and issuing bonds, as well as encouraging citizens and bankers to invest. Two– thirds
of the money was from loans and bonds and one– fifth by taxes. More importantly the Internal Revenue Act (1862) brought in ten times more of the
money than regular... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite those loses the Union army was able to redeem themselves in the battle of Fort Henry and Donelson and Shiloh. Their manpower and their
economic advantage showed in all three of the important battles favoring the Union winning the war. Although, President Lincoln was focused on
winning the war, he was able to pick good generals to lead the armies; however he was not mainly focused on the political aspects of the war. Lincoln
came into office as President with little administrative experience. Whereas Davis, Confederate president, had military and administrative experience
could use both to his advantage. Lincoln, having an analytical mind, was able to master the military strategy for the war. This made him more involved
in the military aspect of the war and not the political or economic matters which was left to Congress. After his inauguration as President of the United
States on March 4, 1861, Abraham Lincoln warned the South that secession was illegal under the Constitution and would declare war against the
rebelling states if deemed necessary. Once the war began Lincoln was always fearful of the threat of southern sympathizers so, he suspend the writ of

A Brief Note On The Battle Of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam started the morning of September 17, 1862 at 0600. Union troops of the First and Twelfth Corps made their way across
Antietam Creek the day before in efforts to attack the left flank. From 0600 to 1000, the Union troops were with Confederates under Major General
Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. This engagement occurred in a 24–acre cornfield. These were the most deadly hours of the battle; over 8,000 casualties
were killed at this time. As Union General Joseph Hooker later wrote, 'It was never my fortune to witness a bloody, dismal battlefield in that nature. '
In the first hour of the battle in the Cornfield, the slaughter was so intense that one man fell, was killed or wounded every second. By 10 am, Union

casualties at Antietam.

The battle moved south into a section of the line known as the Sunken Road because of a major terrain feature. At about mid morning the fight was
expected to take place from 9:30 AM and last until 1:00 PM. The Confederates in the middle of the battlefield, led by General D.H. Hill, were in a
sunken road that they were told to hold at any price. Colonel John B. Gordon said to General Lee "these men are going to stay here, general, till the sun
goes down or victory is won." They shot from the sunken road at the approaching Northern generals French and Richardson's soldiers of General
Sumner's corp. The union line retreated 5 times, but kept returning. For some unexplained reasoning, the right of the Confederate boundary ultimately
stammered and subsided. Union General Richardson exploited this convenience and went in the Confederate right. He attacked through the sunken

Hesitation at Antietam: McClellan's Stumble in the Civil War
Introduction
As the bloodiest single–day in American history, the battle of Antietam shifted Union confidence sufficiently enough to serve as an early turning point
in the Civil War while simultaneously discouraging international support towards the Confederacy. On September 17, 1862, Major GeneralGeorge B.
McClellan's Army of the Potomac met General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Antietam Creek in what would become one of the most
significant early battles of the Civil War. On September 13th, 1862, McClellan's Army intercepted Special Order 191, a misplaced Confederate order
which disclosed the location of much of the Confederate Army including Lee's position ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his book written several years after the war, McClellan's remarks on Burnside clearly depict his disdain for the subordinate General, "I think that his
weak mind was turned; that he was confused in action; and that subsequently he did not know what had occurred, and was talked by his staff into any
belief they chose" (McClellan, G. B. 1887). Instead of fostering mutual trust and respect, he provided unclear and biased guidance to his subordinate
leaders resulting in confusion, angst, and eventually he lost control of the battle around mid–day. Despite his preferential treatment of his Generals,
McClellan cared deeply for his Soldiers, so much so, that he often found himself overanalyzing the situation and delaying his attacks worried that he
may be putting his men at risk. When McClellan took charge of the Army of the Potomac, many of the Soldiers rejoiced that "Little Mac" was back in
charge because his supreme respect for the livelihood of his enlisted Soldiers was evident in both how he interacted with his men and how he
maneuvered his formations on the battlefield. Unfortunately, his deep feelings for his Soldiers led to worrisome and slow planning that eventually
resulted in too little action too late to achieve a decisive victory.

The Battle Of Bull Run. The American Civil War Was Fought
The Battle of Bull Run
The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine whether the Union or Confederacy would survive. The fight would take place
between the North, called Union states and the South, called Confederate states. The Confederate states wanted to leave the North and South union and
stand on their own.
The war started on April 12, 1861 when Confederate forces attacked a Union military base at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The reason the war started
at this time was that Abraham Lincoln had just been elected President in 1860. Abraham Lincoln wanted to end slavery but keep the union together. The
North had an increase of industry and the South still depended on farming the land. However, the South ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The battle was also known as the Battle of First Manassas. This was the first major battle of the Civil War. Even though the Union Army outnumbered
the Confederate Army, the experience of the Confederate Army made the difference and they won that battle.
The Confederate reinforcements had time to arrive by railroad because the Union 's forces were slow positioning themselves. Even though the
Union and Confederate sides had about 18,000 troops in their first battle, they were not trained and they were led poorly. The outcome of this battle
was a Confederate victory. The Union forces suffered a disorganized retreat of their troops. Union troops marched from the Federal capital in
Washington, D.C. to strike a Confederate force along a small river known as Bull Run. After fighting on the defensive for most of the day, the rebels
rallied and were able to break the Union right flank, sending them into a chaotic retreat towards Washington. The Confederate victory gave the South a
false confidence and shocked many in the North, who realized the war would not be won as easily as they had hoped.
By July 1861, the northern press and the public were eager for the Union Army to make an advance on Richmond, ahead of the planned meeting of
the Confederate Congress there on July 20, 1861. Encouraged by early victories of Union troops in western Virginia, and by the war fever spreading

War was inevitalble. Washington was filled with spies and Pinkerton
approached the President, offering to create a secret service to uncover and arrest the
spies. Lincoln would not agree.
George McClellan, an old friend of Pinkerton's, wanted him to set up a military
intelligence operation and send agents into the South. Pinkerton assigned himself
and traveled as E.J.Allen, a Southern rebel. The information he gathered helped
McClellan win several minor battles in the Ohio Valley when war broke out. In 1861,
Pinkerton received devastating news. The Northern Army of the Potomac had been
defeated at Bull Run in the first major battle of the Civil War.
Pinkerton's most challenging opponents was Rose O'Neal Greenhow, the South's
most productive and effective spy. She concealed information that thwarted the
attack by General George McDowell at Manassas, outside of Washington. Pinkerton
realized Rose Greenhow, "the Southern Rose," presented a great danger and had to be
arrested. A Union army captain was arrested leaving her home, carrying a vital military
map of gun ports. Pinkerton and his agents uncovered many military plans that she had
obtained to aid in the Southern war effort. She had a network of spies, including many
women. After her arrest and release from prison, she traveled abroad, raising money
for military support. Returning from Europe, her boat

The second area of attack happened toward the center of the battlefield, Union assaults against the Sunken Road pierced the Confederate center after a

third area of attack during the Battle of Antietam occurred at the Rohrback Bridge where the Union Commander, General Burnside, was tasked to
cross the bridge and flank Lee's forces. By the time the order had come down to cross the bridge, the Confederate Army had shifted the majority of its

Anthony Espindola Dr. Flashnick HST 340 15 February 2015 Book review: Lincoln and His Generals & Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as
Commander in Chief While there are countless books and biographies written on the life of Abraham Lincoln, none argue quite so heavily in favor
of Lincoln's military brilliance during the Civil War as T. Harry Williams' book Lincoln and His Generals, published in 1952. Williams, born in
1909, is an experienced historian who taught at Louisiana State University and wrote multiple books on military and political history (Williams, 2).
Large amounts of his work focused on the Civil War, primarily with that of the Union's leadership. Within the preface of his book, Williams directly
states that his "theme is Lincoln as a director of war and his place in the high command and his influence in developing a modern command system for
this nation" (Williams, 7). While the theme of this book was certainly original at the time it was written, the book Tried by War: Abraham as
Commander in Chief – written by James M. McPherson and published in 2008 – shares similar contributions to the leadership qualities of President
Lincoln. McPherson also argues that it was Lincoln's learned military genius that won the war for the north. McPherson, like Williams, has written
many essays and works about the Civil War, and is a renowned historian for his expertise in that genre. Both authors are well educated in the history of
Lincoln even though their works are nearly

Cartoon Summary : Cartoons Of The Chicago Fire
This cartoon is depicting the Chicago fire. Rumor has it that a cow started the Chicago fire and that's exactly what this cartoon is showing. This
cartoon was published in 1871 depicting the O'Learys. Specifically Mrs. O'Leary. After the fire it was found by reporter that the O'Learys started
the fire in their barn by a cow knocking over a lantern. The cartoon says "supposed" cause of the fire, which leads me to think that this artist also
believes what later came out about Mrs. O'Leary. She was later rumored to have started the fire on purpose because city officials cut off her milk
selling side business. This cartoon raises a good point by saying supposed in that it could mean Mrs. O'Leary started the fire intentionally or that it
maybe was just an accident.
In 1900, when this cartoon was published, is when China was being overcome by western civilizations. The other countries that were controlling
China are given sharp teeth and look vicious. China is left helpless on the ground, squished. Imperialism is represented in this picture in that the larger
animals have total control over China. China is being taken over by other countries and is left helpless which caused lots of problems in the 1900s.
This picture shows how defeated China looks compared to the other countries and how China has no weapons compared to the other animals.

The War between the States
The Civil War also known as the War Between the States was a war fought from 1861 to 1865. The war was fought in the United States after seven
Southern slave sates declared their separation to form the Confederate States of America. The Southern states were known as the Confederacy. But, the
states that remained which were the Northern States were called the Union. The War was the deadliest war in American history; it killed
approximately 620,000 soldiers. The soldiers died from combat, accidents, starvation, and diseases. The Southern States declared secession because
they did not want to get rid of slavery. However, the Northern States andAbraham Lincoln had abolished slavery and were completely against it. This
made the Southern states upset; it became the major cause of The Civil War.
On April 12, 1861, the deadliest was begun, shots were fired. The Confederate soldiers attacked the Union's Fort Sumter in South Carolina. General
Beauregard sent Major Anderson a message an hour before the attack saying he would fire if Anderson and his soldiers didn't surrender. An hour
passed and Anderson did not surrender so the firing began. Major Anderson and 68 of his soldiers were inside the fort when the attack began. A couple
months prior Anderson moved his troops from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter, because he thought Fort Sumter was more protected. Fort Sumter had been
the only fort in South Carolina that was not seized. On the day of the attack when the Confederate opened fire,

The Plan Of The Anaconda Plan
The anaconda plan
At the beginning of the war the Union thought it would be an easy, quick war. The Union leaders at this time had no actual plan for the war. General
Scott saw this and came up with the Anaconda plan. Scott considered the war a strategy game, and would attack and penetrate the enemy 's forces
without destroying all of their troops; focusing mainly on victory. At the beginning of the war Scott, unlike others, thought that the war would be over
in more than two years. The war ended in four years. The term Anaconda plan came from Northern press trying to explain Scotts plan. Many people
thought that Scotts plan was too passive and difficult. The Union's effort in the civil war increased greatly on April 19, 1861. At this pointAbraham
Lincoln created a naval blockade, a system of ships that stops all imports and exports, on the Confederate coastline. This blockade stretched from the
Rio Grande to the Chesapeake Bay. At this time Lincoln's argument was that the Confederacy had no right to secede. Creating this blockade allowed
the National warships to attack privateers. Privateers are privately owned and run warships. These ships were used to take the Union's trade ships.
Getting rid of the privateers meant that the Union could transport goods easier. Scott 's anaconda plan needed the Union's army and navy to surround
the Confederacy. After encompassing the Confederacy the army and navy would tighten in, and effectively strangle the South. This contained two

George Mcclellan And Robert E. Lee
In war, the commander in chief makes or breaks the efficiency and effectiveness of the army. The Civil War involved 3 main commanders in chief of
the Union and Confederate Army. Through letters written by these three leaders, Ulysses S. Grant, George McClellan and Robert E. Lee, it is evident
that their opinions and strategies differed greatly. While Grant considered himself part of the army, Lee separated himself as a ruling commander.
Grant's humble nature and vast knowledge on war technique also made him a more efficient leader, compared to the egotistical George McClellan,
another commander of the Union army. Ultimately, Grant and the union army won the war, because of Grant's hands–on leaderships skills, while Lee
lacked confidence in his troops, causing him to remove himself from his men.
Throughout his time as commander in chief of the union army, Ulysses S. Grant understood and appreciated the commitment his soldiers made, as
suggested by letters to his family, which forced him to focus greatly on war technique, ultimately allowing him to be a great leader of the Union army.
In a letter written to his Father, in which he discusses the war, Grant states, "I do not wish to act hastily or unadvisedly in the matter." Grant's
cautiousness and attention to details, when his troops and his army are concerned, shows that all decisions he makes concerning his troops have been
carefully thought out, so he doesn't put his troops in danger. Grant wishes to give "all the

Grant Vs Mcclellan Comare And Contrast

  • 1. Grant vs Mcclellan Comare and Contrast 1. Describe the different approaches to waging war of Grant and McClellan, utilizing Grant's campaign in the West and McClellan's maneuvers in Virginia. During the American Civil War, leadership within the Union's army was constantly an issue. Within the Union, various generals were found at times to be at odds with the political leaders in Washington. This was especially evident in the relationship between General George McClellan and President Lincoln. This tension was the result of McClellan's approach to waging war. By examining the differing approaches to waging war of U.S. Grant and George B. McClellan one can gain a better appreciation for the decision making that was necessary by leaders like Lincoln, in selecting military ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He suffered what some might refer to in today's vernacular as something akin to "analysis paralysis." (McPherson, 1988, pp. 361–365) McClellan's caution in waging war is evidenced clearly in the Army of the Potomac's Peninsula Campaign. McClellan was charged with leading the assault on Richmond, delivering what could have been a fatal blow against the Confederacy. During the Army of the Potomac's movements towards Richmond, McClellan repeatedly delayed, believing he had inferior numbers to his initial adversary, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. Johnston knew the caution McClellan was prone to, and slowly drew McClellan closer to Confederate forces defending Richmond. At the Battle of Seven Pines, Johnston reinforced the idea in McClellan's mind that caution was necessary. (McPherson, 1988, p. 461) The surprise attach by Johnston's forces, though ultimately defeated by the Army of the Potomac, delayed McClellan's advance as he called for more reinforcements from Washington. Johnston was wounded in the battle, and replaced by General Robert E. Lee. Lee, whose prowess as a tactician bordered on legendary, led a series of surprise attacks against McClellan's Army of the Potomac in the Seven Days' Battle. McClellan's forces were pushed back, and he was relieved of duty as commander of the Army of the Potomac, until later in 1862. (McPherson, 1988, pp. 462–470) In contrast with McClellan stood U.S. ... • 2. Compare And Contrast Mcclellan And Lee Both General McClellan and Lee where the commander's for both the north and south at the beginning of the war. General Lee was President Lincoln's first choice to command the Union forces. McClellan was hired and fired by President Lincoln where General Lee commanded the south from beginning to the end of civil war. General McClellan was more of a politician and took analyzed risks, and took a cautious approach to war. General Lee's military viewpoint was offensive, take the fight to the north not a defensive stance. General McClellan was not a great commander during was but he was excellent at training Soldiers. Lee's leadership style incorporated empathy, compassion, respect for others, discernment and honesty. General Lee listened ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. McPherson and Hearn on Abraham Lincoln Essay The presidency of Abraham Lincoln came during a highly radical and chaotic period of American history. For historians such as James McPherson, they see Lincoln as the greatest leader in American history. For McPherson, Lincoln succeeded in combining military pragmatism with the political ideologies of the North, as well as Lincoln's own idealism, thus assuring Northern victory. However, not all historians agree that Lincoln was a masterful tactician. Chester Hearn, believes that although Abraham Lincoln was one of America's most venerable statesmen, his presidency was marked by flaws and a general misunderstanding of how war is waged. McPherson's Tried by War and Hearn's Lincoln, The Cabinet and the Generals, make the argument for each of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Hearn does not entirely refute the commonly view of Lincoln as a brilliant tactician and morally inspired leader, he also provides many examples of Lincoln's failures. Many of the policies, which McPherson celebrates, Hearn depicts as misguided and desperate. Although James McPherson presents Lincoln as having numerous qualities that defined him as a brilliant leader, he wastes no time in revealing what he believes to be Lincoln's greatest strength. In his Introduction, McPherson states regarding Lincoln's political leadership: "In a civil war whose origins lay in a political conflict over the future of slavery and a political decision by certain states to secede, policy could never be separated from national strategy.... And neither policy nor national strategy could be separated from military strategy" (McPherson, p.6). Lincoln could not approach the war from a purely martial standpoint–instead, he needed to focus on the issues that caused it. For the catalyst of the war was also the tool for its solution; a war started by differing ideologies could only be resolved through the military application of ideology. This non–objective approach to the waging of the war almost resembles the inspired approach McPherson brings to his examination of Lincoln himself. For Hearn, Lincoln's true level of tactical skill is hard to discern due to the legendary status that history has given him. In response to this confusion, Hearn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Failure of Mission Command by General McClellan Essay The Battle of Antietam could have been a devastating and fatal blow to the Confederate Army if Gen. McClellan acted decisively, took calculated risks, and veered away from his cautious approach to war. There are many instances leading up to the battle and during the battle in which he lacks the necessary offensive initiative to effectively cripple and ultimately win the war. This paper is intended to articulate the failure of Mission Command by GEN McClellan by pointing out how he failed to understand, visualize, describe and direct the battlefield to his benefit. GEN McClellan may not have been a great war time General but he excelled at training Soldiers, getting his men ready to fight and raising the morale of the Armies he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As is noted from the quote above, questions were raised about Gen McClellan's inability to lead an Army during a time of war. Only because of uncertainty of the Union Army after GEN Pope's defeat on September 1 at Second Bull Run did McClellan live to Command during Antietam. For all of GEN McClellan's ability to rally the Soldiers to fight, his inability to garner the trust and confidence in his generals proved pivotal during the battle. Stephen Sears depicts McClellan as only trusting two of his six Corps commanders. The testing of battle uncovered another McClellan failing – his management of his own generals. Of his six corps commanders, he displayed confidence in only two, Fitz John Porter and Joseph Hooker. He had termed 65–year–old Edwin Sumner "even a greater fool than I had supposed," and regarded William Franklin as slow and lacking in energy. He had recently rebuked Ambrose Burnside for his tepid pursuit of the Rebels after the fighting at South Mountain. Joseph Mansfield, new to command, was an unknown quantity. McClellan called no council of his generals to explain his intentions, issued no plan of battle, and on September 17 conferred at length only with Fitz John Porter. ... • 5. What Is Sears Thesis For The Battle Of Antietam The Confederate invasion of the North in September of 1862 was an attempt by Robert E. Lee to swing the war in favor of the South. The main reason for the Confederate invasion was that the British were on the verge of recognizing the Confederacy if they could show it could hold its own, and Lee was anxious to provide a cornerstone for the Confederacy to build upon. The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest day in American history and was a major blow to the Army of Northern Virginia and the morale of the south. This is the tableau against which our story unfolds. Stephen W. (Ward) Sears was born July 27th, 1932 in Ohio. He is a pre–eminent American historian specializing in all facets of the Civil War. He graduated from Oberlin College in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sears uses language that most all of us can understand, and clearly it is a very well researched work. He supports his claims in the book with a copious amount of facts and yet still keeps the course of the book moving forward. He draws on a variety of sources including diaries and letters of the participants to produce, arguably, his definitive work. Sears thesis is actually two–fold; one that McClellan missed countless opportunities to defeat Lee and two that McClellan was an incompetent commander who missed several instances to take initiative and win the battle decisively. The young Napoleon, as McClellan was known, often waited an inordinate amount of time before making a movement with his troops. For me, reading the details (with heavy emphasis to the Union story) was captivating. No recon, no communication, egotistical leadership, timidity, and procrastination all combined and helped the Union snatch defeat (or, at the very least, a draw) from the jaws of victory. This battle, like others before and after it, could have really shortened the Civil War. On the other hand, Sears holds Lee in high esteem. Though taking unnecessary risks at times, he manages to skillfully avoid being crushed at the hands of a numerically superior opponent. According to Sears, Antietam proved a tactical victory for the Army of Northern Virginia, "It had beaten back a foe much superior in manpower and ordinance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Essay Lincoln and His Generals Book Report Lincoln and His Generals Book Review Lincoln and His Generals is a book by Thomas Williams that focuses on the Civil War as being the first modern war and the way President Lincoln lead his divided nation during this dark historic time. Williams introduces the Union army as one that has no shape to it. This includes the lack of any plan of attack, as the thought of war had not been converted into any type of scheme. The armies lacked organization and communication, and existing generals were old and incompetent. The first task that Lincoln had was the immediate selection of Generals. Lincoln's selection process was sometimes based on political and personal grounds, and he was in the position of selecting from a pool of generals... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Williams shows us that Lincoln never hesitated in making difficult decisions based on results. Lincoln's people skills are clearly established in Williams's writings. Lincoln seems keen at applying pressure as well as giving his generals a free hand when necessary. Williams shows that Lincoln's patience does wear thin when there are no early victories and the lack of aggressiveness on the Union side. Williams shows a gradual transformation on Lincoln's selection process. Initially each general was selected on characteristics such as battle experience and political backing. As the enemy holds out and there is inaction, Lincoln starts to doubt the ability of his generals and starts to seek generals who can win without excuses. Williams describes the pressure that is placed on Lincoln. The union government and the public were questioning the inactivity of McClellan and his troops. Lincoln was willing to absorb most of this pressure but eventually seeks answers to the same questions. Williams shows the desperate side of Lincoln. Lincoln starts to recklessly allow attack plans that he did not always agree with, just because he was desperate to see action from McClellan. Williams indicates that Lincoln is a misunderstood man through the eyes of his Generals. His chief general McClellan thought little of him and had doubts about Lincoln early on. Union Generals sometimes failed at getting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Clarisse Mcclellan In Fahrenheit 451 : Character Analysis Clarisse McClellan is an important character in the novel Fahrenheit 451 because of her personal feelings and actions on herself and others. Clarisse, a 17–year–old girl who lived in a supposed utopia positively affected Guy Montag's views on the government.. As a result of growing up in a peculiar family, she stuck out in society. She was an only child who lived with her mother, father, and uncle. Unusual things would happen in their home such as the lights being on at night, having conversations about events going on in their time, and her family's criminal record. In this society, people go to jail for being unconventional. Their way of life intrigued Montag and drew him to pay more attention to their odd way of life. "Montag heard the voices talking, talking, talking, giving, talking, weaving, reweaving their hypnotic web." (14). The family prefers discussing real issues and have normal human communication skills which allowed Clarisse to gain her large spectrum of knowledge. When the other children went to school, Clarisse did her own learning about the outside world. Her appearance along with her personality was extremely distinct. "Her face was slender and milk–white, and in it was a kind of gentle hunger that touched over everything with tireless curiosity" (3). Clarisse had a magnetic personality that opened up Guy Montag's mind to new ideas. She asked curious questions about the world around her and was extremely observant. • 10. The Anaconda Plan 's Effect On The Civil War Meyme Nakash Ms. Gulnac US History 9G 15 May 2015 The Anaconda Plan 's Effect on The Civil War From 1861 –1865 the Civil War was fought to determine the survival of the independent Confederacy. In January 1861, seven Southern slave states seceded from the United States of America to create the Confederate States of America ("Civil War AcademyAmerican Civil War"). The twenty three states that remained loyal were called the Union. War was declared on April 12, 1861 between the North and South due to the controversial issue of slavery and its extension in Western territories. Following the first attack on April 12, 1861 at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, Union General Winfield Scott proposed the Anaconda plan to defeat the South. Instead of attacking the South with a vast number of troops and killing everyone in sight, this three–part plan aimed to fight the rebellion in a more humane way, with least amount of casualties possible. The strategy of the plan was to use the Navy to blockade Southern ports to prevent imports/exports, control the Mississippi River, splitting the confederacy in two, and to capture the Confederate capital at Richmond, VA. Although the Anaconda plan was not directly successful, it led to similar approaches by Union Generals McClellan, Sherman, and Grant. This system was called 'The Anaconda Plan ' for its snake–like strategy of crushing the life out of the Confederacy. Scott presented his strategy in letters ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. General Mclellan Dbq General McClellan was a famous general during the civil war who lead the Army of the Potomac. President Lincoln wanted him to move forward towards Richmond but General McClellan would hold back until he was finally ordered to move. Him being removed can be considered a loss but it also was a victory for the people back in Washington. George McClellan was somewhat of a perfectionist he would not do anything till the time he didn't have it all figured out, also he was never sure and doubted himself. Another thing that caused him issues is that he overestimated the abilities and manpower of his enemies. George McClellan was considered to be a perfectionist and would never take the next step until everything else wasn't all figured out. He wanted more reinforcements but President Lincoln had to explain to him that this would not be a wise move. The Battle of Antietam Essay September 16–18, 1862, outside of the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland, between the Potomac River and Antietam Creek, was the location of the bloodiest battle in American history. The fight would take place between the North, called Union states and the South, called Confederate states. The Confederate states wanted to leave the North and South union and stand on their own. The war started on April 12, 1861 when Confederate forces attacked a Union military base at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The reason the war started at this time was that Abraham Lincoln had just been elected President in 1860. Abraham Lincoln wanted to end slavery but keep the union together. The North had an increase of industry and the South still depended on farming the land. However, the South ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The battle was also known as the Battle of First Manassas. This was the first major battle of the Civil War. Even though the Union Army outnumbered the Confederate Army, the experience of the Confederate Army made the difference and they won that battle. The Confederate reinforcements had time to arrive by railroad because the Union 's forces were slow positioning themselves. Even though the Union and Confederate sides had about 18,000 troops in their first battle, they were not trained and they were led poorly. The outcome of this battle was a Confederate victory. The Union forces suffered a disorganized retreat of their troops. Union troops marched from the Federal capital in Washington, D.C. to strike a Confederate force along a small river known as Bull Run. After fighting on the defensive for most of the day, the rebels rallied and were able to break the Union right flank, sending them into a chaotic retreat towards Washington. The Confederate victory gave the South a false confidence and shocked many in the North, who realized the war would not be won as easily as they had hoped. By July 1861, the northern press and the public were eager for the Union Army to make an advance on Richmond, ahead of the planned meeting of the Confederate Congress there on July 20, 1861. Encouraged by early victories of Union troops in western Virginia, and by the war fever spreading through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The information he gathered helped McClellan win several minor battles in the Ohio Valley when war broke out. In 1861, Pinkerton received devastating news. The Northern Army of the Potomac had been defeated at Bull Run in the first major battle of the Civil War. Pinkerton's most challenging opponents was Rose O'Neal Greenhow, the South's most productive and effective spy. She concealed information that thwarted the attack by General George McDowell at Manassas, outside of Washington. Pinkerton realized Rose Greenhow, "the Southern Rose," presented a great danger and had to be arrested. A Union army captain was arrested leaving her home, carrying a vital military map of gun ports. Pinkerton and his agents uncovered many military plans that she had obtained to aid in the Southern war effort. She had a network of spies, including many women. • 35. Mcclellan Battle "Commanders direct all aspects of operations by establishing their commander's intent, setting achievable objectives, and issuing clear tasks to subordinate units." During the battle, McClellan personally "directed the actions of his generals from his headquarters, two and one–half miles from the front lines, visiting the field only once." McClellan issued orders to his generals through couriers and flag signals; in addition, kept apprised of the action by telescope even though parts of the battle were not visible. This distancing potentially clouded his judgment, reducing his ability to achieve success. Since McClellan did not consult with his generals about his operations process, due to the lack of trust, there was no coordination between the McClellan's adjacent... The second area of attack happened toward the center of the battlefield, Union assaults against the Sunken Road pierced the Confederate center after a terrible struggle for this key defensive position. The Union army had a prime opportunity to split Lee's forces down the middle and possible destroy them. General Longstreet later wrote, "It was easy to see that if the Federals broke through our line there, the Confederate army would be cut in two and probably destroyed." McClellan did not seize the opportunity to end the battle and decided to hold his forces back in a defensive posture. The third area of attack during the Battle of Antietam occurred at the Rohrback Bridge where the Union Commander, General Burnside, was tasked to cross the bridge and flank Lee's forces. By the time the order had come down to cross the bridge, the Confederate Army had shifted the majority of its forces to supplement the proposed ambush. The bridge was well defended and it took Burnside three attempts to cross the bridge while suffering numerous casualties. At a crucial moment, during this battle General ... • 36. Lincoln And His Generals By War : Abraham Lincoln As... Anthony Espindola Dr. Flashnick HST 340 15 February 2015 Book review: Lincoln and His Generals & Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief While there are countless books and biographies written on the life of Abraham Lincoln, none argue quite so heavily in favor of Lincoln's military brilliance during the Civil War as T. Harry Williams' book Lincoln and His Generals, published in 1952. Williams, born in 1909, is an experienced historian who taught at Louisiana State University and wrote multiple books on military and political history (Williams, 2). Large amounts of his work focused on the Civil War, primarily with that of the Union's leadership. Within the preface of his book, Williams directly states that his "theme is Lincoln as a director of war and his place in the high command and his influence in developing a modern command system for this nation" (Williams, 7). While the theme of this book was certainly original at the time it was written, the book Tried by War: Abraham as Commander in Chief – written by James M. McPherson and published in 2008 – shares similar contributions to the leadership qualities of President Lincoln. McPherson also argues that it was Lincoln's learned military genius that won the war for the north. McPherson, like Williams, has written many essays and works about the Civil War, and is a renowned historian for his expertise in that genre. Both authors are well educated in the history of Lincoln even though their works are nearly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Imagine A Country Divided Into Two Sides With Fellow Country Imagine a country divided into two sides with fellow country men slaughtering each other, just because of an idea to enslave innocent people. In the mid–nineteenth century, the decades of tension between the North and the South of the United States of America, was exploding into the American Civil War. Although the economy was successful due to farming and manufacturing, the North and the South were feuding over westward expansion, slavery, and federal rights versus states rights. "I have fought against the people of the North because I believe they were seeking it's dearest rights. But never have I cherished toward or vindictive feelings and I have never seen the day I did not pray for them." (Robert E. Lee Quotes). After North Carolina, ... • 38. Cartoon Summary : Cartoons Of The Chicago Fire This cartoon is depicting the Chicago fire. Rumor has it that a cow started the Chicago fire and that's exactly what this cartoon is showing. This cartoon was published in 1871 depicting the O'Learys. Specifically Mrs. O'Leary. After the fire it was found by reporter that the O'Learys started the fire in their barn by a cow knocking over a lantern. The cartoon says "supposed" cause of the fire, which leads me to think that this artist also believes what later came out about Mrs. O'Leary. She was later rumored to have started the fire on purpose because city officials cut off her milk selling side business. This cartoon raises a good point by saying supposed in that it could mean Mrs. O'Leary started the fire intentionally or that it maybe was just an accident. In 1900, when this cartoon was published, is when China was being overcome by western civilizations. The other countries that were controlling China are given sharp teeth and look vicious. China is left helpless on the ground, squished. Imperialism is represented in this picture in that the larger animals have total control over China. China is being taken over by other countries and is left helpless which caused lots of problems in the 1900s. • 39. The War between the States The Civil War also known as the War Between the States was a war fought from 1861 to 1865. The war was fought in the United States after seven Southern slave sates declared their separation to form the Confederate States of America. The Southern states were known as the Confederacy. But, the states that remained which were the Northern States were called the Union. The War was the deadliest war in American history; it killed approximately 620,000 soldiers. The soldiers died from combat, accidents, starvation, and diseases. The Southern States declared secession because they did not want to get rid of slavery. However, the Northern States andAbraham Lincoln had abolished slavery and were completely against it. This made the Southern states upset; it became the major cause of The Civil War. On April 12, 1861, the deadliest was begun, shots were fired. The Confederate soldiers attacked the Union's Fort Sumter in South Carolina. General Beauregard sent Major Anderson a message an hour before the attack saying he would fire if Anderson and his soldiers didn't surrender. An hour passed and Anderson did not surrender so the firing began. Major Anderson and 68 of his soldiers were inside the fort when the attack began. A couple months prior Anderson moved his troops from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter, because he thought Fort Sumter was more protected. • 40. The Plan Of The Anaconda Plan The anaconda plan At the beginning of the war the Union thought it would be an easy, quick war. The Union leaders at this time had no actual plan for the war. General Scott saw this and came up with the Anaconda plan. Scott considered the war a strategy game, and would attack and penetrate the enemy 's forces without destroying all of their troops; focusing mainly on victory. At the beginning of the war Scott, unlike others, thought that the war would be over in more than two years. The war ended in four years. The term Anaconda plan came from Northern press trying to explain Scotts plan. Many people thought that Scotts plan was too passive and difficult. The Union's effort in the civil war increased greatly on April 19, 1861. At this pointAbraham Lincoln created a naval blockade, a system of ships that stops all imports and exports, on the Confederate coastline. This blockade stretched from the Rio Grande to the Chesapeake Bay. At this time Lincoln's argument was that the Confederacy had no right to secede. Creating this blockade allowed the National warships to attack privateers. Privateers are privately owned and run warships. These ships were used to take the Union's trade ships. Getting rid of the privateers meant that the Union could transport goods easier. Scott 's anaconda plan needed the Union's army and navy to surround the Confederacy. After encompassing the Confederacy the army and navy would tighten in, and effectively strangle the South. This contained two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. George Mcclellan And Robert E. Lee In war, the commander in chief makes or breaks the efficiency and effectiveness of the army. The Civil War involved 3 main commanders in chief of the Union and Confederate Army. Through letters written by these three leaders, Ulysses S. Grant, George McClellan and Robert E. Lee, it is evident that their opinions and strategies differed greatly. While Grant considered himself part of the army, Lee separated himself as a ruling commander. Grant's humble nature and vast knowledge on war technique also made him a more efficient leader, compared to the egotistical George McClellan, another commander of the Union army. Ultimately, Grant and the union army won the war, because of Grant's hands–on leaderships skills, while Lee lacked confidence in his troops, causing him to remove himself from his men. Throughout his time as commander in chief of the union army, Ulysses S. Grant understood and appreciated the commitment his soldiers made, as suggested by letters to his family, which forced him to focus greatly on war technique, ultimately allowing him to be a great leader of the Union army. In a letter written to his Father, in which he discusses the war, Grant states, "I do not wish to act hastily or unadvisedly in the matter." Grant's cautiousness and attention to details, when his troops and his army are concerned, shows that all decisions he makes concerning his troops have been carefully thought out, so he doesn't put his troops in danger. Grant wishes to give "all the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
