There are total of nine characters that play a role throughout the story, and each of them leave their
own mark on the story. For the most part all of the children have a shocked reaction when learning
the price of the toys they see at the toy store, but they do vary in the manner with which the react. In
Rena Korb's critical essay on "The Lesson" she explains this at a deeper level, "Big Butt reacts on a
visceral level. He sees the microscope and declares 'I'm going to buy that there,' when he is not even
sure what a person uses a microscope to look at." (Korb). Junebug on the other hand reacts in a

the only one who says she has a desk at home. Another instance where we see Mercedes react
differently than the other children is when everyone is shocked by the price of the sailboat being
over one thousand dollars; commenting how they would buy parts from a store to build their own
for less than a dollar, she says "My father'd but it for me if I wanted it." (Bambara, p. 149). These
are only a few examples of how the characters differ from each other, but all of them together make
the story great; the way Bambara was able to tie everything in and make the characters relate to one

mentions how she would rather "snatch Sugar and go to the Sunset and terrorize the West Indian
kids" but Sugar doesn't mention this plans but this could be because we don't have insight into
Sugar's thoughts. As the story progresses we see that both Sylvia's and Sugar's character undergo
some changes. While they were both affected by the event of the day, I believe that Sugar was more

Throughout her life, Maya Angelou was ridiculed for the color of her skin and was treated
differently because of it. So many racist people lived in her town and used her and the black
community as a doormat. African Americans were restricted to certain things and, "did not have the

childhood, especially when she was eight. When Angelou was eight she helped her grandmother run

think Calipurnia is a better mom for many different reasons. She puts more time into the kids than

The last two plays that I have seen on Broadway were Arthur Miller's The Price, and Stephen King's
Misery. Both plays were extremely interesting and captivating to watch because of their simple set
design, small cast, and concentrated, straightforward plot. Similarly, these plays employed non–
exaggerated direction, and focused on more subtle movements and stage direction to focus on the
focal point of the scene. Both plays were mainly dramas, so the direction caused the plays to feel
more personal and visceral. In Arthur Miller's The Price, one significant stage picture that stood out
was a scene where Gregory Solomon (played by Danny Devito) is eating an egg downstage right
center, while Victor Franz (played by Mark Ruffalo) stands in center stage having an argument with
Solomon. Solomon was directed to sit further downstage than Franz in order to pull the audiences
attention towards his actions. In the scene, Devito devours a hard–boiled egg while trying to explain
furniture appraisal to Ruffalo; Devito never stopped talking and eating (doing both at the same
time). This direction to not break dialogue further intrigued the audience because it pulled the
audiences attention towards Devito and the question of when he would finish. The physicality of the
stage picture was not excessive or magnified to draw attention, yet the scene was compelling

Courage is something that everyone is born with, but only some are courageous enough to find it
and put it to use. Merriam Webster 's defines courage as "Mental or moral strength to venture,
persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty." Courage can overcome any obstacle, proving
that if we have courage any dream truly can come true. As readers we must understand that there are
going to be times in life when we must use courage. By reading about others, and learning how to

It is very frightening to speak up against something so powerful and evil, example: The Taliban.
However, if the whole world were to realize that the power of these hate groups comes from the
creation of fear, maybe everyone would be a bit more like Malala's dad, and not have the fear to
speak up for what is right. The author is trying to show us that no matter our circumstances we can
all find the courage to fight for what we know is right. Malala is a prime example of courage
because her life was put on the line. However, she walked the tightrope over the hate of the Taliban.
She reached the tallest building and was able to achieve the greatest of accomplishments. Including
being the youngest person ever nominated for the Nobel
Peace Prize. Malala was able to accomplish many extraordinary things thanks to her courage.
The next example of a quiet girl with a loud mind is Maya Angelou. Maya was born in Arkansas and
raised with her grandma. For her whole life she never knew if she had parents, so she created the
perspective that she had been abandoned and unwanted. Though a negative outlook, a realistic one
for a child who had never received anything from the so–called "parents" that brought her into this

Alexandra puts her entire life into the land. In fact, Alexandra seems to exemplify the land itself.
She epitomizes the American Dream and everything it stands for. She takes a raw piece of
Nebraskan soil and works it until it becomes bountiful and she becomes wealthy and seemingly
successful. In all of her success in achieving the American Dream, very little is said about
Alexandra's own hopes and dreams. Though Alexandra is the only one to have achieved anything
close to the American Dream, she is the only character to become completely downhearted. In the
novel it is written that "she was actually tired of life" (112) and that "what was left of life seemed so
unimportant" (113). She also relates life to a poem she loved as a girl, and the poem reads as
follows: Hence Forth the world will only be/A wider prison–house to me...(118). Regardless of the
fact that Alexandra signifies everything that is the American Dream, she is still unhappy with and
imprisoned by life. It is not until she indulges in her own dream, the companionship of Carl
Linstrum that she begins to see life in an optimistic light. Another element soiled by the standards of
America is the spirituality of the pioneers. The best example of this is illustrated in the novel's
character Ivar. While the church itself rejects Ivar and most of Hanover wants to send him to an

Maya Angelou creates both personal narratives and poems that the reader
can relate to. Her exploration of this universal theme lends itself to a

motherhood.

She sees only
a woman that many people, both white and black, respect. The general
store that Annie owns is the center of activity in Stamps. This
centralization of the store has a direct correlation to the way Annie is
the moral center of Maya's childhood family (Lupton 8–9).
After ten years of living with Momma Henderson, Maya and Bailey are
sent to join their mother in St. Louis. By the time the children are in

their teens, they have covered the western portion of the United States,

This article connects to the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, by stating that looking for
the positive side of life will only give positive results. The story of To Kill a Mockingbird is about
Atticus Finch, a white lawyer who attempts to defend an innocent black man, and is told through the
eyes of his intelligent and innocent young daughter, Scout. As Scout grows up, she encounters many
people who make her angry, but instead of letting these people bring her down, she uses them to
learn how to find the good in people. When children grow up facing difficult problems with the
people in their lives, they learn to look for the positive aspects of people and treat them with respect.
Neighbors can be hard to deal with, but they also help children learn an important lesson about
staying positive during difficult times. This is clearly shown throughout the book with the character
named Mrs. Dubose. Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, the grouchy old lady living two doors down the
