Conodoguinet Creek Field Trip
This year I went on a field trip to the Conodoguinet Creek. This creek runs into the Susquehanna
River and drains 500 square miles of diverse landscapes. Conodoguinet comes from an indian word
meaning "a long way with many bends." It begins near Carlisle at North Middleton Park and comes
to an end in West Fairview, when it flows into the Susquehanna River. The Conodoguinet Creek is
about 90 miles of bends and loops that meander throughout Cumberland Valley. When I went on this

At this station, we had to go into the creek, pick out rocks, and observe and identify the animal life
living on that rock. Animals that live in the water need dissolved oxygen so they can breathe under
the water. The more turbulent the water is, the more dissolved oxygen can be found in it. The
amount of dissolved oxygen in a body of water will determine the type and number of macro–
invertebrates that may live there. There are three groups of animals that you could find in the
Conodoguinet Creek. Group one is called stream insects and crustaceans. These are pollution
sensitive organisms, which means they cannot exist in polluted waters. Group one organisms are
only found in good quality water. Some examples of these organisms are mayflies, gilled snails,
water penny, or a stonefly(shown in figure 8.) The next group is the organisms that are somewhat
pollution tolerant, which means they can be found in good or fair quality water. Crayfish,

Four days and 1,304 miles can be the experience of a lifetime. Driving through California, up to the
forest was breathtaking. I saw trees mix together until massive trees towered over us. Although the
trees are tall and straight, they have knots and grooves in the bark. Some of the trees have rough
char marks from past fires. The gigantic trees are thick around the base and rise like skyscrapers; the
canopy blocking out the sun. The forest air has a sense of damp earth and nature with cool mist

A Yellow Bridge Analysis
Art can be seen everywhere from technology, houses, paintings, drawings, graffiti and etc. On
Marple Avenue there is a bright yellow bridge that leads from Drexel hill to Clifton heights . This

This experiment uses the pH scale to determine the purity of the water.The pH scale measures
acidity and alkalinity or base. Acidity is the level of acid in a substance and alkalinity is a measure
of the capacity of solution to neutralize an acid. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14. A reading of 0 to 6
is an acid reading and a reading of 8 to 14 is an alkaline reading. For one of the acidity tests the
students had to get a rock from the creek and pour acid on it. If the rock bubbles and makes a
sizzling sound, then it neutralizes acid. Neutralizing means rendering something ineffective or
harmless by applying an opposite force or effect. In this case, the acid is neutralizing the alkaline on

This photo journal assignment was very interesting and educational. It helped me look outside the
box and to really relate geography to my everyday life. My first relatable topic that I came in contact
with during this assignment was the process of evaporation. At Dry Creek park in Modesto, CA, I

Community Profile
Berowra Valley National Park is a particularly important place of historical significance to
Berowra's indigenous and non–indigenous communities. The traditional owners of the land of the
Berowra area are the Guringai and Darug people. (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2013)
published that there were 565 residents or around 0.4% of the total population living in the Hornsby
Shire in 2011. This number had increased from 447 in the 2006 census (ABS, 2007). Some
important places around the Berowra area are the Muogamarra Nature Reserve, Kuring–gai Chase
National Park, Berowra Valley National Park and Marramarra National Park. Some key indigenous
members of the community are Aunty Edna Watson and Uncle Wes Marne (The Australian Research
Institute for Environment and Sustainability – Macquarie University, 2014) who continue to educate
the community of the Aboriginal heritage and culture of the area. Other key organisations of the area
include Kalkari discovery centre and the Guringai Tribal Link Aboriginal Corporation.

diverse geological area to study tectonic setting, metamorphic and igneous rocks, and how the
tectonic history has affected the development of the minerals in the area. The Blue Ridge Mountains
sit within a larger tectonic area that includes part of the smoky mountains and Appalachian mountain
chain. The Blue Ridge Mountains sit upon a large thrust plate area that has experienced repeated
movement in the orogeny process as the Appalachians were built. This process occurred during the
Proterozoic to the Paleozoic period (Tectonic Setting of the Southern Appalachians). Evidence of the
faulting includes sedimentary zones at the end of the thrust. Within the thrust areas is high–grade
metamorphic rocks and some igneous rocks from intrusion during collision events (Hatcher, R).
Evidence of the intrusions are the dikes which can be seen and the large granite facies throughout
the area (Grant, Willard). The age of the thrusts and the areas where they occurred are dated to
varying ages with the oldest tectonic action dated 595 million years ago to the youngest at 265
million years ago (Hatcher, R). The thrust faults in the center of the Blue Ridge area would appear to
have the highest grade of metamorphism while the faults to the edge have the lowest grade

Recently, feeling a little lazy, my hiking partner and I decided to check out the East Canyon
Connector route. This day hike is a relatively easy and suitable for children and families. Climbing
gently along the canyon above the creek on an old service road the trail the route features terrific
views of the second–growth western hemlock, western cedar and douglas fir forest. There are
numerous creek crossings – frequent opportunities to rock hop. Always a hit with the kids!
Thanks to the Ridge Meadows Outdoor Club there is a newly flagged "unofficial" route from the
East Canyon Trail to several viewpoints on Mt. Nutt. This trail is rated difficult, and with limited
daylight, we decided to save this one for another day, although it was tempting to climb!
As we continued along the East Canyon route, we were able to catch glimpses of the Golden Ears
looking stunning with a dusting of new snow. Wanting more of a challenge, we decided to follow
the connector trail down to the Lower Falls route. The connector route is quite steep, and as you
descend to the falls, you quickly become mesmerised by the forest. The trees tower above, and you
quickly find yourself surrounded by ferns, mosses and lichens. We did not encounter a single soul
on the trail and enjoyed the stillness and calm as we listened to the falls roaring below.There is

Many people go hiking and unfortunately leave their trash behind or graffiti the rocks. The trash left
behind does not only hurt the environment, it hurts the view, experience, and safety of other visitors.
On some rocks there are pieces of glass from a beer bottle that can injure animals and people who
are just on a climb, hike, or going about their lives. Others bring permanent markers or use knives to
stain the rocks with their initials or derogatory words. Red Rock thrives on volunteers and visitors to
help clean the park and donate money. Some visitors also try to destroy the property of the
restrooms by breaking toilet seats or knocking down sign posts; although some of the damage is
done unintentionally by wild animals. Throughout the year these small damages to the property add
up detrimentally in costs. Hopefully in the future, the park can concentrate more on creating more
parking, fixing the roads, and adding more trails to the park. Unfortunately, these types of things and
activities require the money, time and attention from the staff who are distracted by constantly
cleaning, maintaining, and repairing the park every day from harmful visitors. The small $7 daily
fee per car or the small $30 annual fee to visit this national park is a small price to pay to help it

very interesting area to visit. It is located in the east–northern part of the park. These rockslides are
part of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The very steep bank located at the bottom of Slide Mountain is
3230 meters in elevation. The glacial polish located in the rockslide indicates that Slide Mountain
was once filled with glaciers that eroded the mountain to make it so steep. This is such a wonderful
natural–made masterpiece to visit for those interested in the geology of Yosemite. An extremely
enjoyable activity to do while you are there is to rock climb Slide Mountain.

Matterhorn Canyon
Just east of Slide Mountain, you will come across Matterhorn Canyon. This thirteen–mile hike is
very famous because you will not find another canyon in Yosemite that compares to this one. This
canyon has a small river flowing in between the walls of Matterhorn Canyon. These "walls" are
scattered with rocks and meadows. Its cliffs are made out of smooth granite, which are crystallized
igneous rock. Hiking up the trail to the northern boundary of Matterhorn Canyon is Matterhorn
Peak. This peak is very spectacular in that you are able to ascend this peak with the right gear and it
is one of the highest peaks in the Northern part of the

Water is a vital nutrient needed for the survival of all species. One quality of water that was
observed in this lab is known as the "hardness" of water. Hardness is caused by the presence of
polyvalent cations that dissolve in the water as it moves through soil and rock.1 The main minerals
that give water a hard quality are Ca2+ and Mg2+ therefore, a sample containing a large
concentration of calcium and magnesium is considered hard while a sample containing little or no
calcium and magnesium is considered soft.3 Hard water is not harmful to the body but it proves to
be a problem when dealing with daily household chores such as doing dishes, laundry, and even
bathing. When combined with soap, hard water produces an insoluble precipitate, known as soap
scum, that lessens the effectiveness of soap and requires more to remove.4 Hard water also
interferes with industrial processes due to the formation of a precipitate known as scale. Scale tends
to be found in pipes, boilers, and other devices used in industrial processes as it is formed when hard
water is heated. This proves to be a major problem as the scale formation reduces the water flow,
greatly decreases the heat transfer process, and eventually requires the metal in the devices to be
replaced, which is a very expensive process. Therefore, many industries require the use of soft water
to perform their everyday functions.2 The hardness of water can be measured in units of parts per
million (ppm) or grains per gallon.

When one thinks of Death Valley National Park in California, the first image that comes to mind is
usually an endless desert of dry, cracked terrain or rippling sand with little wildlife or vegetation.
While that is what you'll find in most of Death Valley today, it wasn't always so. During the
Holocene Eon and the Pleistocene ice ages, Death Valley had its fair share of streams and rivers,
many of which originated from the nearby mountains. In fact, the driest area of Death Valley today
was once an island! During that time, glaciers had formed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and water
from the rivers cascaded into the area now known as Shoreline Butte, forming Lake Manly; a lake

The ripples on the sand dunes form when the sand starts to pile up high enough to cause a slope on
the wind–blowing side of the dune. Once the sand piles up past the angle of repose, approximately
30 degrees, the extra weight causes it to become unstable. The sand particles making up this extra

At the center of Death Valley National Park is Furnace Creek. Unlike much of Death Valley, a wide

The Wonder
I have always found nature to be so amazing from the hundreds of trees and flowers to the animals
within the forest. Experiencing nature is one of the best things that could happen in your life. I have
always lived near the woods so I can experience nature every day. I have always felt calm when I go
into the woods so I go there when I feel stressed. I lay in my hammock for a while or go put my feet
into the icy cold water in the creek to get away from the world and just be at peace. To get away
from the judgmental glares and the expectations from people.
One thing I used to love to do when I was little was put on my bathing suit and play in the creek
with my cousins and two sisters. We would hunt crawdads and lizards. We tried to go up or down
the creek as far as we could without getting in trouble. We had a tire swing to swing over the creek.
We also made mud pies and mud castles. A bunch of us always made mud balls to throw at each
other. The amount of imagination you get when you mix going into the woods with a bunch of
people is crazy. We always make up games to play when we are in the creek, like villains and
heroes.
Another thing I love to do outdoors is ride my families Polaris razor. I drive it all around at home or
my family and I go somewhere to ride. We go to Windrock Park in Tennessee which has over 72,000
acres with 314 miles of trails to drive on. We get to drive for hours there and see all the amazing
sights.

Bull Creek Research Paper
Bull Creek is a 45–50 acre dog–friendly natural park and swimming hole owned/managed by the
city of Austin. The stream running through the center is perennial and runs over a small man–made
damn. The park is close to Loop 360 and there is ample parking at several points along the hiking
path. Bull Creek is mainly popular as a hiking spot you can bring your dogs to, rock climbing off of
one particular granite face, and swimming. We did not swim on our visit because we had our kids
with us and the creek has tested positive for fecal matter on several occasions after rain – most likely
overland flow washing in waste from the dogs that use the park. The hiking trail stretches ~3 miles
