Conodoguinet Creek Field Trip
This year I went on a field trip to the Conodoguinet Creek. This creek runs into the Susquehanna
River and drains 500 square miles of diverse landscapes. Conodoguinet comes from an indian word
meaning "a long way with many bends." It begins near Carlisle at North Middleton Park and comes
to an end in West Fairview, when it flows into the Susquehanna River. The Conodoguinet Creek is
about 90 miles of bends and loops that meander throughout Cumberland Valley. When I went on this
trip, I tested how fast the water was moving downstream. I also tested the creek for the acidity and
eutrophication. Eutrophication is excessive richness of nutrients in a lake or other body of water,
frequently due to fertilizer runoff from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this station, we had to go into the creek, pick out rocks, and observe and identify the animal life
living on that rock. Animals that live in the water need dissolved oxygen so they can breathe under
the water. The more turbulent the water is, the more dissolved oxygen can be found in it. The
amount of dissolved oxygen in a body of water will determine the type and number of macro–
invertebrates that may live there. There are three groups of animals that you could find in the
Conodoguinet Creek. Group one is called stream insects and crustaceans. These are pollution
sensitive organisms, which means they cannot exist in polluted waters. Group one organisms are
only found in good quality water. Some examples of these organisms are mayflies, gilled snails,
water penny, or a stonefly(shown in figure 8.) The next group is the organisms that are somewhat
pollution tolerant, which means they can be found in good or fair quality water. Crayfish,
dragonflies, and clams are all examples of group two organisms (shown in figures 3, 6, and 9.)
Group three organisms are pollution tolerant organisms. This means they can be found in any quality
water. Some examples of group three organisms are pouch snails, pond snails, orb snails, and
leeches. When I conducted this experiment, I found seven group one organisms, seven group two
organisms, and five group three organisms. Macroinvertebrate is another word for organism.

A Short Story : A Story?
.Zane looks at me and says, "Hey Alex, let's go do something different."i look back at him ''ok like
what'' zane said ''I don't know what do you think we should do'' I look at him with a puzzled look
and say ''maybe we could go get some friends'' he looked at me then we looked at each other then he
said ''sounds fine to me'' we called some people we knew like, Dan and Jeremiah. Zane and I wanted
them to come over so we could do something. We didn't know what we wanted to do but that was ok
we had to walk to go get them so it gave us some time to think about what we wanted to do outside.
It was a nice day, not too hot not too cold and the sun was ut. It was a good day. Zane and I were
having fun. He was staying at my house and we just got bored playing video games, call of duty, and
stuff like that. It smelled nice out, like clean, almost like when you clean house really good and it
just smells so much better. That's kinda what it smelled like. So when we got to dan's house we still
didn't know what we wanted to do so Zane said, "We will figure it out on the way to Jeremiah's. We
got Dan and we had to walk back through town to go to Jeremiah's house. On are way to Jeremiah's
we were talking about what would be fun to do together. We passed the pet store, and the ice cream
shop. Zane finally says, "lets go to the park". Dan says, " ya", and I say," why not". I remember the

Waterfalls form differently most of the time and it creates something interesting. Waterfalls can be
formed in many ways. One way they can form is when natural disasters hit a rock under a stream
then it forms. Another way they can form is when water pushes the rock away many times from the
stream. There are many types of waterfalls and some waterfalls have more than one type. The
dictionary meaning of waterfall is "a very steep descent of the water of a stream." The Pacific

Ricketts Glen State Park Waterfalls
There are 24 named waterfalls in Ricketts Glen State Park in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania along
Kitchen Creek as it flows in three steep, narrow valleys, or glens. They range in height from 9 feet
(2.7 m) to the 94–foot (29 m) Ganoga Falls. Ricketts Glen State Park is named for R. Bruce
Ricketts, a colonel in the American Civil War who owned over 80,000 acres (32,000 ha) in the area
in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but spared the old growth forests in the glens from
clearcutting. The park, which opened in 1944, is administered by the Bureau of State Parks of the
Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). Nearly all of the
waterfalls are visible from the Falls Trail, which Ricketts had built from 1889 to

The Governor of Georgia is trying to get rid of historical sites in Georgia, to save money. I think that
there are some she should rethink about and keep, but the most important one is Cloudland Canyon.
This beautiful state park has some of the best views you could see in the state. To begin with,
everyone of all ages can experience this historical sight and not be bored. The trails that people can
walk on are only a small part of what you can do at the state park. There is a 18 hole golf course,
wild cave tours, fishing ponds, horseback riding, and several picnicking spots. There are also several

Washington, D.C. Ecological Issues Introduction: Ecologies and environments in the nation's
capitol, Washington, D.C. Washington, D.C. is known for the White House, for Capitol Hill, all the
monuments to great Americans and to historic moments. But there is a great deal more in the
nation's capitol than politics and monuments. According to the Website HYPERLINK

D.C. is bounded on the west by the State of Virginia and the State of Maryland surrounds the city on
the northwest, northeast and southeast. Three main rivers flow through Washington D.C., the
Potomac River, the Anacostia River, and Rock Creek. Actually the major river running through the
city is the Potomac, and the Rock Creek and Anacostia River are tributaries of the Potomac
(meaning, they contribute water to the Potomac). Seventy percent of the land in Washington, D.C.
"...is controlled by the National Park Service" and there are 250,000 acres of parkland in the
metropolitan area of Washington D.C. ( HYPERLINK "http://www.Washington.org"

Some of the most common bunchgrasses are basin wildrye and blue–bunch wheatgrass. They are
typically found on the sloped areas. In the lower land cheatgrass and medusahead rye are invasive
nonnative grasses, and must be maintained in order to preserve the native plants. Near the streams
visitors will find cottonwoods, willows, alder, and hawthorn trees. Once it's April the wildflowers
begin to take bloom. In more recent years bitterroot has bloomed covering the most land. Other
wildflowers found in this area are gold bee plants, prairie stars, fiddle neck and false dandelion.
Climate Painted hills are affected by the rainshadow effect in Eastern Oregon. The area is very dry
and arid, good for preserving fossils. Precipitation varies from 9–16 inches a year with snow in the
winter time. The coldest time of the year is in January with temperatures ranging from 42ºF to 24ºF.
July and August tend to be the hottest with temperatures from 86ºF to 52ºF. Vegetation is sparse but
you can expect to find wildrye or sage brush. The previous climates gave coloration to the painted

Acid Rain Experiment
The Conodoguinet Creek is a 101 mile tributary of the Susquehanna River in south central
Pennsylvania. Recently, a group of East Pennsboro 8th grade students went to the Conodoguinet
Creek in Acri Meadow Park to test it for pollution. The two main causes of water pollution are
eutrophication and acid rain. Eutrophication is excessive richness of nutrients in a body of water,
frequently due to runoff from land, which causes a dense growth of plant life and death of animal
life from lack of oxygen. Acid rain is mainly caused by a chemical reaction that starts when
compounds such as sulfur and nitrogen are released into the air. It can come in many forms such as
rain, snow, and hail. Three experiments that were done to test for pollution are counting ... Show

This experiment uses the pH scale to determine the purity of the water. The pH scale measures
acidity and alkalinity or base. Acidity is the level of acid in a substance and alkalinity is a measure
of the capacity of solution to neutralize an acid. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14. A reading of 0 to 6
is an acid reading and a reading of 8 to 14 is an alkaline reading. For one of the acidity tests the
students had to get a rock from the creek and pour acid on it. If the rock bubbles and makes a
sizzling sound, then it neutralizes acid. Neutralizing means rendering something ineffective or
harmless by applying an opposite force or effect. In this case, the acid is neutralizing the alkaline on
the rock. Limestone neutralizes acid and sandstone doesn't. The show that the creek has a neutral pH
of 7 and 69.1% of the rocks collected neutralize acid. Another test was an alkalinity test which
shows that the creek has about 13 ppm. This means that the majority of the rocks neutralize acid
rain, keeping the water

Description Of A Photo Journal Assignment
This photo journal assignment was very interesting and educational. It helped me look outside the
box and to really relate geography to my everyday life. My first relatable topic that I came in contact
with during this assignment was the process of evaporation. At Dry Creek park in Modesto, CA, I
witnessed evaporation taking place in the creek. I have been going to this park for quite some time
and in the summer, water levels decrease drastically. Evaporation is one of the four phases in the
hydrologic cycle (water cycle). According to our Geosystems Eighth Edition book, Christopherson

Cloud falls into is the precipitation category. "Water vapor, droplets of water suspended in the air,
builds up in the Earth 's atmosphere. Water vapor in the atmosphere is visible as clouds and fog"
(http://nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/condensation/). Precipitation the process when water is
released from clouds in different types such as rain, snow, hail or sleet.
My second relatable topic that I came into contact with were these beautiful stepping stones. These
large stepping stones are sedimentary rock which is one of the rock types in the rock cycle. The
word sedimentary means that the rocks was formed by organic minerals and different particles. This
rock forming process can take many years and it starts when rocks weather and erode. This specific
stepping stone that I encountered was known as "chert." So how is chert formed exactly? According
to Geoscience News and information (http://geology.com/rocks/chert.shtml), "When microcrystals
of silicon dioxide grow within soft sediments that become limestone or chalk [...] when dissolved
silica is transported to the formation site by the movement of groundwater."
Global warming and the greenhouse effect were some of the negative topics that I researched. After
further research for each topic, I became aware how I contribute to global warming. On my way to
the park, I was driving my car and then it hit me. I remembered that for every gallon of gas used, our
cars are accounted for 24 pounds of

Berowra Valley National Park: An Historical Point of Interest for the Guringai and Darug Nations.
Myself in front of one of the many known rock engraving sites within the Berowra Valley National
Park. March 16, 2016.
Community Profile
Berowra Valley National Park is a particularly important place of historical significance to
Berowra's indigenous and non–indigenous communities. The traditional owners of the land of the
Berowra area are the Guringai and Darug people. (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2013)
published that there were 565 residents or around 0.4% of the total population living in the Hornsby
Shire in 2011. This number had increased from 447 in the 2006 census (ABS, 2007). Some
important places around the Berowra area are the Muogamarra Nature Reserve, Kuring–gai Chase
National Park, Berowra Valley National Park and Marramarra National Park. Some key indigenous
members of the community are Aunty Edna Watson and Uncle Wes Marne (The Australian Research
Institute for Environment and Sustainability – Macquarie University, 2014) who continue to educate
the community of the Aboriginal heritage and culture of the area. Other key organisations of the area
include Kalkari discovery centre and the Guringai Tribal Link Aboriginal Corporation.
A Place of Nation Borders

Annual Rate Of Precipitation, Maryland And The District Of...
Annual Rates of Precipitation Maryland and the District of Columbia have similar average annual
precipitation patterns (based on a period of 30 years from 1951–1980) with 42 inches and 43 inches,
respectively. Although the precipitation pattern distributed evenly throughout the year, the spring
and summer months (May – September) get approximately 2.5 inches more precipitation compared
to the rest of the year (USGS, 1999). Furthermore, apart from the seasonal variation in the
precipitation rates, there has been an increase in the annual precipitation rate of Washington, DC,
since 1965 (see methods/discussion Evapotranspiration According to a USGS study, approximately
one–third to one–half of total precipitation becomes runoff in central Maryland and the District of
Columbia (USGS, 1999). Evapotranspiration makes up the difference between amounts of
precipitation and runoff. AET = P – Q Where AET is actual evapotranspiration, P is the precipitation
depth, and Q is runoff depth. Combined evaporation and transpiration from plants
(evapotranspiration) is balanced by inflows as precipitation and outflows as runoff. Based on a
research conducted by McGuiness (1963) for a period of seventeen years (1933–1949), the Rock
Creek basin received an average precipitation of 43.5 inches, in which 12 inches was surface runoff.
Therefore, if the precipitation and runoff values are substituted into the equation above, actual

National Park Volcano
Yellowstone National Park is a historical site of some of the largest calderas on the planet. Today it
is visited by more than 2.7 million visitors every year and is considered one of our country's greatest
national landmarks. However, in recent times, scientists have begun to question the hard truth that
someday within in this century, the super volcano could once again erupt. Currently the volcano is
still active with signs that another pyroclastic explosion may soon happen.
The Largest Explosion
The area around Yellowstone has been home to some of the most pyroclastic explosions currently
known to mankind. Based on rock layers found around Yellowstone and areas impacted by prior
eruptions, scientists at the USGS (United States Geological ... Show more content on

Yellowstone's groundwater resources and how it affects the caldera. (USGS, n.d.) These studies will

protect the environment as well as protect park infrastructure from encroaching of hot ground.
As of November 7, 2016, new studies are directed towards Yellowstone's geothermal waters. For
one month, the USGS will study the shallow water system that affects the hots springs, geysers and
other thermal features surrounding Yellowstone. (YVO, Yellowstone Volcano Observatory , 2016).

The Blue Ridge Mountains Of North Carolina
Vincent Carter 10/4/15 GLY 3311c Homework 2 The Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina is a
diverse geological area to study tectonic setting, metamorphic and igneous rocks, and how the
tectonic history has affected the development of the minerals in the area. The Blue Ridge Mountains
sit within a larger tectonic area that includes part of the smoky mountains and Appalachian mountain
chain. The Blue Ridge Mountains sit upon a large thrust plate area that has experienced repeated
movement in the orogeny process as the Appalachians were built. This process occurred during the
Proterozoic to the Paleozoic period (Tectonic Setting of the Southern Appalachians). Evidence of the
faulting includes sedimentary zones at the end of the thrust. Within the thrust areas is high–grade
metamorphic rocks and some igneous rocks from intrusion during collision events (Hatcher, R).
Evidence of the intrusions are the dikes which can be seen and the large granite facies throughout
the area (Grant, Willard). The age of the thrusts and the areas where they occurred are dated to
varying ages with the oldest tectonic action dated 595 million years ago to the youngest at 265
million years ago (Hatcher, R). The thrust faults in the center of the Blue Ridge area would appear to
have the highest grade of metamorphism while the faults to the edge have the lowest grade
metamorphism or sedimentary features (Hatcher, Robert, and Arthur Merschat.). this is easily seen
because the area where the

Recently, feeling a little lazy, my hiking partner and I decided to check out the East Canyon
Connector route. This day hike is a relatively easy and suitable for children and families. Climbing
gently along the canyon above the creek on an old service road the trail the route features terrific
views of the second–growth western hemlock, western cedar and douglas fir forest. There are
numerous creek crossings – frequent opportunities to rock hop. Always a hit with the kids!
Thanks to the Ridge Meadows Outdoor Club there is a newly flagged "unofficial" route from the
East Canyon Trail to several viewpoints on Mt. Nutt. This trail is rated difficult, and with limited
daylight, we decided to save this one for another day, although it was tempting to climb!
As we continued along the East Canyon route, we were able to catch glimpses of the Golden Ears
looking stunning with a dusting of new snow. Wanting more of a challenge, we decided to follow
the connector trail down to the Lower Falls route. The connector route is quite steep, and as you
descend to the falls, you quickly become mesmerised by the forest. The trees tower above, and you
quickly find yourself surrounded by ferns, mosses and lichens. We did not encounter a single soul
on the trail and enjoyed the stillness and calm as we listened to the falls roaring below. There is
evidence of past logging along the route, and as

Many people go hiking and unfortunately leave their trash behind or graffiti the rocks. The trash left
behind does not only hurt the environment, it hurts the view, experience, and safety of other visitors.
On some rocks there are pieces of glass from a beer bottle that can injure animals and people who
are just on a climb, hike, or going about their lives. Others bring permanent markers or use knives to
stain the rocks with their initials or derogatory words. Red Rock thrives on volunteers and visitors to
help clean the park and donate money. Some visitors also try to destroy the property of the
restrooms by breaking toilet seats or knocking down sign posts; although some of the damage is
done unintentionally by wild animals. Throughout the year these small damages to the property add
up detrimentally in costs. Hopefully in the future, the park can concentrate more on creating more
parking, fixing the roads, and adding more trails to the park. Unfortunately, these types of things and
activities require the money, time and attention from the staff who are distracted by constantly
cleaning, maintaining, and repairing the park every day from harmful visitors. The small $7 daily

very interesting area to visit. It is located in the east–northern part of the park. These rockslides are
part of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The very steep bank located at the bottom of Slide Mountain is
3230 meters in elevation. The glacial polish located in the rockslide indicates that Slide Mountain

Water Is A Vital Nutrient Needed For The Survival Of All...
Water is a vital nutrient needed for the survival of all species. One quality of water that was
observed in this lab is known as the "hardness" of water. Hardness is caused by the presence of
polyvalent cations that dissolve in the water as it moves through soil and rock.1 The main minerals
that give water a hard quality are Ca2+ and Mg2+ therefore, a sample containing a large
concentration of calcium and magnesium is considered hard while a sample containing little or no
calcium and magnesium is considered soft.3 Hard water is not harmful to the body but it proves to
be a problem when dealing with daily household chores such as doing dishes, laundry, and even
bathing. When combined with soap, hard water produces an insoluble precipitate, known as soap
scum, that lessens the effectiveness of soap and requires more to remove.4 Hard water also
interferes with industrial processes due to the formation of a precipitate known as scale. Scale tends
to be found in pipes, boilers, and other devices used in industrial processes as it is formed when hard
water is heated. This proves to be a major problem as the scale formation reduces the water flow,
greatly decreases the heat transfer process, and eventually requires the metal in the devices to be
replaced, which is a very expensive process. Therefore, many industries require the use of soft water
to perform their everyday functions.2 The hardness of water can be measured in units of parts per
million (ppm) or grains per gallon.

Introduction. Weathering Occurs Through Interaction Between
Introduction Weathering occurs through interaction between rocks, soils, and minerals and the
Earth's atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere. Different types of weathering fall under three
general categories of weathering: physical, chemical, and biological. Tafoni weathering refers to
small cavernous holes and features that is found in granular rock. Typically, these features include
smooth concave walls and are adjacent with one another in networks. Tafoni weathering is a subtype
of weathering that falls under hydration weathering and ultimately under the larger umbrella
category of physical weathering processes. Fundamentally, this particular weathering occurs due to a
salt crystal expansion process where salt crystals or deposits ... Show more content on

Also, the Santa Monica Mountains also undergo Aeolian processes during particularly strong wind
activity such as "Santa Ana" wind events. Moreover, our primary focus area was restrained to about
a 1–mile hike into the park and reached a large volcanic swimming hole. The swimming hole acted
as a boundary, but there are a few observations beyond the swimming hole that also contribute to
this weathering process. In a short distance beyond the swimming hole, there is a visible fault line.
Within the hike, the first observable evidence of tafoni weathering was about 40 minutes into the
hike. Passing a large rock archway, tafoni weathering was evident in the rock face of the archway as
well as the side of the mountains beyond this point. In addition to larger mountains, tafoni
weathering was also present in smaller hillsides. This particular type of weathering was also evident
in the mountains overlooking the swimming hole. The tafoni weathering observed in the mountains
around the swimming hole had larger cave–like features than the mountains not directly touching a
body of water. Discussion Presently, there are studies conducted to better understand tafoni
weathering with several investigations and theoretical models but due to "limited data available on
temperature, moisture and salt regimes" it is difficult to

Death Valley National Park was Very Different in the Past...
When one thinks of Death Valley National Park in California, the first image that comes to mind is
usually an endless desert of dry, cracked terrain or rippling sand with little wildlife or vegetation.
While that is what you'll find in most of Death Valley today, it wasn't always so. During the
Holocene Eon and the Pleistocene ice ages, Death Valley had its fair share of streams and rivers,
many of which originated from the nearby mountains. In fact, the driest area of Death Valley today
was once an island! During that time, glaciers had formed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and water
from the rivers cascaded into the area now known as Shoreline Butte, forming Lake Manly; a lake
that was estimate to be almost 600 feet deep! The evidence of ... Show more content on

The ripples on the sand dunes form when the sand starts to pile up high enough to cause a slope on
the wind–blowing side of the dune. Once the sand piles up past the angle of repose, approximately
30 degrees, the extra weight causes it to become unstable. The sand particles making up this extra
weight then slips down the other side of the slope.
At the center of Death Valley National Park is Furnace Creek. Unlike much of Death Valley, a wide
variety of desert plants and animals call this oasis home and visitors can enjoy all the amenities at
the Furnace Creek Inn and Resort complex; including its lush green golf course and refreshing
swimming pool. There are a few other areas of the park that are just as jaw–dropping; the Saline
Valley Marsh in the West, the Cottonball Marsh in the central part of the park and Saratoga Springs
and Valley Springs, to the south. So why is there such a drastic difference between these rare
habitats within Death Valley National Park and the others? The answer is simple ... the accessibility
of water. These areas either have large ponds, some measuring six acres or more, or are fed by
several of the parks natural springs. Saratoga Springs in particular is home to some very rare species
not found anywhere else in the world including the Saratoga Springs Pupfish, the Amargosa Spring

Descriptive Essay About Nature
The Wonder
I have always found nature to be so amazing from the hundreds of trees and flowers to the animals
within the forest. Experiencing nature is one of the best things that could happen in your life. I have
always lived near the woods so I can experience nature every day. I have always felt calm when I go
into the woods so I go there when I feel stressed. I lay in my hammock for a while or go put my feet
into the icy cold water in the creek to get away from the world and just be at peace. To get away
from the judgmental glares and the expectations from people.
One thing I used to love to do when I was little was put on my bathing suit and play in the creek
with my cousins and two sisters. We would hunt crawdads and lizards. We tried to go up or down
the creek as far as we could without getting in trouble. We had a tire swing to swing over the creek.
We also made mud pies and mud castles. A bunch of us always made mud balls to throw at each
other. The amount of imagination you get when you mix going into the woods with a bunch of
people is crazy. We always make up games to play when we are in the creek, like villains and
heroes.
Another thing I love to do outdoors is ride my families Polaris razor. I drive it all around at home or
my family and I go somewhere to ride. We go to Windrock Park in Tennessee which has over 72,000
acres with 314 miles of trails to drive on. We get to drive for hours there and see all the amazing
sights.

Conodoguinet Creek Field Trip

  • 1. Conodoguinet Creek Field Trip This year I went on a field trip to the Conodoguinet Creek. This creek runs into the Susquehanna River and drains 500 square miles of diverse landscapes. Conodoguinet comes from an indian word meaning "a long way with many bends." It begins near Carlisle at North Middleton Park and comes to an end in West Fairview, when it flows into the Susquehanna River. The Conodoguinet Creek is about 90 miles of bends and loops that meander throughout Cumberland Valley. When I went on this trip, I tested how fast the water was moving downstream. I also tested the creek for the acidity and eutrophication. Eutrophication is excessive richness of nutrients in a lake or other body of water, frequently due to fertilizer runoff from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this station, we had to go into the creek, pick out rocks, and observe and identify the animal life living on that rock. Animals that live in the water need dissolved oxygen so they can breathe under the water. The more turbulent the water is, the more dissolved oxygen can be found in it. The amount of dissolved oxygen in a body of water will determine the type and number of macro– invertebrates that may live there. There are three groups of animals that you could find in the Conodoguinet Creek. Group one is called stream insects and crustaceans. These are pollution sensitive organisms, which means they cannot exist in polluted waters. Group one organisms are only found in good quality water. Some examples of these organisms are mayflies, gilled snails, water penny, or a stonefly(shown in figure 8.) The next group is the organisms that are somewhat pollution tolerant, which means they can be found in good or fair quality water. Crayfish, dragonflies, and clams are all examples of group two organisms (shown in figures 3, 6, and 9.) Group three organisms are pollution tolerant organisms. This means they can be found in any quality water. Some examples of group three organisms are pouch snails, pond snails, orb snails, and leeches. When I conducted this experiment, I found seven group one organisms, seven group two organisms, and five group three organisms. Macroinvertebrate is another word for organism. ... I saw trees mix together until massive trees towered over us. Although the trees are tall and straight, they have knots and grooves in the bark. Some of the trees have rough char marks from past fires. The gigantic trees are thick around the base and rise like skyscrapers; the canopy blocking out the sun. The forest air has a sense of damp earth and nature with cool mist everywhere; the surroundings are calm and relaxing. • 15. Acid Rain Experiment The Conodoguinet Creek is a 101 mile tributary of the Susquehanna River in south central Pennsylvania. Recently, a group of East Pennsboro 8th grade students went to the Conodoguinet Creek in Acri Meadow Park to test it for pollution. The two main causes of water pollution are eutrophication and acid rain. Eutrophication is excessive richness of nutrients in a body of water, frequently due to runoff from land, which causes a dense growth of plant life and death of animal life from lack of oxygen. Acid rain is mainly caused by a chemical reaction that starts when compounds such as sulfur and nitrogen are released into the air. It can come in many forms such as rain, snow, and hail. Three experiments that were done to test for pollution are counting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This experiment uses the pH scale to determine the purity of the water. The pH scale measures acidity and alkalinity or base. Acidity is the level of acid in a substance and alkalinity is a measure of the capacity of solution to neutralize an acid. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14. A reading of 0 to 6 is an acid reading and a reading of 8 to 14 is an alkaline reading. For one of the acidity tests the students had to get a rock from the creek and pour acid on it. If the rock bubbles and makes a sizzling sound, then it neutralizes acid. Neutralizing means rendering something ineffective or harmless by applying an opposite force or effect. In this case, the acid is neutralizing the alkaline on the rock. Limestone neutralizes acid and sandstone doesn't. The show that the creek has a neutral pH of 7 and 69.1% of the rocks collected neutralize acid. Another test was an alkalinity test which shows that the creek has about 13 ppm. This means that the majority of the rocks neutralize acid rain, keeping the water ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It helped me look outside the box and to really relate geography to my everyday life. My first relatable topic that I came in contact with during this assignment was the process of evaporation. At Dry Creek park in Modesto, CA, I witnessed evaporation taking place in the creek. I have been going to this park for quite some time and in the summer, water levels decrease drastically. Evaporation is one of the four phases in the hydrologic cycle (water cycle). According to our Geosystems Eighth Edition book, Christopherson say, "Water travels endlessly through the hydrosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. Precipitation the process when water is released from clouds in different types such as rain, snow, hail or sleet. My second relatable topic that I came into contact with were these beautiful stepping stones. These large stepping stones are sedimentary rock which is one of the rock types in the rock cycle. The word sedimentary means that the rocks was formed by organic minerals and different particles. This rock forming process can take many years and it starts when rocks weather and erode. This specific stepping stone that I encountered was known as "chert." So how is chert formed exactly? According to Geoscience News and information (http://geology.com/rocks/chert.shtml), "When microcrystals of silicon dioxide grow within soft sediments that become limestone or chalk [...] when dissolved silica is transported to the formation site by the movement of groundwater." Global warming and the greenhouse effect were some of the negative topics that I researched. After further research for each topic, I became aware how I contribute to global warming. The Blue Ridge Mountains Of North Carolina Vincent Carter 10/4/15 GLY 3311c Homework 2 The Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina is a diverse geological area to study tectonic setting, metamorphic and igneous rocks, and how the tectonic history has affected the development of the minerals in the area. The Blue Ridge Mountains sit within a larger tectonic area that includes part of the smoky mountains and Appalachian mountain chain. The Blue Ridge Mountains sit upon a large thrust plate area that has experienced repeated movement in the orogeny process as the Appalachians were built. This process occurred during the Proterozoic to the Paleozoic period (Tectonic Setting of the Southern Appalachians). Evidence of the faulting includes sedimentary zones at the end of the thrust. Within the thrust areas is high–grade metamorphic rocks and some igneous rocks from intrusion during collision events (Hatcher, R). Evidence of the intrusions are the dikes which can be seen and the large granite facies throughout the area (Grant, Willard). The age of the thrusts and the areas where they occurred are dated to varying ages with the oldest tectonic action dated 595 million years ago to the youngest at 265 million years ago (Hatcher, R). The thrust faults in the center of the Blue Ridge area would appear to have the highest grade of metamorphism while the faults to the edge have the lowest grade metamorphism or sedimentary features (Hatcher, Robert, and Arthur Merschat.). this is easily seen because the area where the ... • 30. Water Is A Vital Nutrient Needed For The Survival Of All... Water is a vital nutrient needed for the survival of all species. One quality of water that was observed in this lab is known as the "hardness" of water. Hardness is caused by the presence of polyvalent cations that dissolve in the water as it moves through soil and rock.1 The main minerals that give water a hard quality are Ca2+ and Mg2+ therefore, a sample containing a large concentration of calcium and magnesium is considered hard while a sample containing little or no calcium and magnesium is considered soft.3 Hard water is not harmful to the body but it proves to be a problem when dealing with daily household chores such as doing dishes, laundry, and even bathing. When combined with soap, hard water produces an insoluble precipitate, known as soap scum, that lessens the effectiveness of soap and requires more to remove.4 Hard water also interferes with industrial processes due to the formation of a precipitate known as scale. Scale tends to be found in pipes, boilers, and other devices used in industrial processes as it is formed when hard water is heated. This proves to be a major problem as the scale formation reduces the water flow, greatly decreases the heat transfer process, and eventually requires the metal in the devices to be replaced, which is a very expensive process. Therefore, many industries require the use of soft water to perform their everyday functions.2 The hardness of water can be measured in units of parts per million (ppm) or grains per gallon. ... • 34. Personal Narrative: My Trailer Old beat up trailers, the neighbors were druggies and the landlord was creepy, composed my trailer park life: it wasn't all that great, but living in this particular trailer park was all we could afford at the time. When we moved it was our first time moving since my little sister was born, so I wasn't ready to move into a new place. First of all, I didn't like the thought of living here because we went from living in a four bedroom house to a two bedroom trailer. My family has six people in it; a two bedroom trailer was crowded for all seven of us, living there was like a hundred sardines trying to fit into one tight can (well, without that awful smell). Anyway, the trailer park had a creek by it ,so when I have my an attitude with my mother ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Introduction. Weathering Occurs Through Interaction Between Introduction Weathering occurs through interaction between rocks, soils, and minerals and the Earth's atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere. Different types of weathering fall under three general categories of weathering: physical, chemical, and biological. Tafoni weathering refers to small cavernous holes and features that is found in granular rock. Typically, these features include smooth concave walls and are adjacent with one another in networks. Tafoni weathering is a subtype of weathering that falls under hydration weathering and ultimately under the larger umbrella category of physical weathering processes. Fundamentally, this particular weathering occurs due to a salt crystal expansion process where salt crystals or deposits ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, the Santa Monica Mountains also undergo Aeolian processes during particularly strong wind activity such as "Santa Ana" wind events. Moreover, our primary focus area was restrained to about a 1–mile hike into the park and reached a large volcanic swimming hole. The swimming hole acted as a boundary, but there are a few observations beyond the swimming hole that also contribute to this weathering process. In a short distance beyond the swimming hole, there is a visible fault line. Within the hike, the first observable evidence of tafoni weathering was about 40 minutes into the hike. Passing a large rock archway, tafoni weathering was evident in the rock face of the archway as well as the side of the mountains beyond this point. In addition to larger mountains, tafoni weathering was also present in smaller hillsides. This particular type of weathering was also evident in the mountains overlooking the swimming hole. The tafoni weathering observed in the mountains around the swimming hole had larger cave–like features than the mountains not directly touching a body of water. Discussion Presently, there are studies conducted to better understand tafoni weathering with several investigations and theoretical models but due to "limited data available on temperature, moisture and salt regimes" it is difficult to ... • 36. Death Valley National Park was Very Different in the Past... When one thinks of Death Valley National Park in California, the first image that comes to mind is usually an endless desert of dry, cracked terrain or rippling sand with little wildlife or vegetation. While that is what you'll find in most of Death Valley today, it wasn't always so. During the Holocene Eon and the Pleistocene ice ages, Death Valley had its fair share of streams and rivers, many of which originated from the nearby mountains. In fact, the driest area of Death Valley today was once an island! During that time, glaciers had formed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and water from the rivers cascaded into the area now known as Shoreline Butte, forming Lake Manly; a lake that was estimate to be almost 600 feet deep! The evidence of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ripples on the sand dunes form when the sand starts to pile up high enough to cause a slope on the wind–blowing side of the dune. Once the sand piles up past the angle of repose, approximately 30 degrees, the extra weight causes it to become unstable. The sand particles making up this extra weight then slips down the other side of the slope. At the center of Death Valley National Park is Furnace Creek. Unlike much of Death Valley, a wide variety of desert plants and animals call this oasis home and visitors can enjoy all the amenities at the Furnace Creek Inn and Resort complex; including its lush green golf course and refreshing swimming pool. There are a few other areas of the park that are just as jaw–dropping; the Saline Valley Marsh in the West, the Cottonball Marsh in the central part of the park and Saratoga Springs and Valley Springs, to the south. So why is there such a drastic difference between these rare habitats within Death Valley National Park and the others? The answer is simple ... the accessibility of water. These areas either have large ponds, some measuring six acres or more, or are fed by several of the parks natural springs. Saratoga Springs in particular is home to some very rare species not found anywhere else in the world including the Saratoga Springs Pupfish, the Amargosa Spring Snail and the Death Valley June bug. Due to the rate of evaporation in this extremely dry climate versus the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Descriptive Essay About Nature The Wonder I have always found nature to be so amazing from the hundreds of trees and flowers to the animals within the forest. Experiencing nature is one of the best things that could happen in your life. I have always lived near the woods so I can experience nature every day. I have always felt calm when I go into the woods so I go there when I feel stressed. I lay in my hammock for a while or go put my feet into the icy cold water in the creek to get away from the world and just be at peace. To get away from the judgmental glares and the expectations from people. One thing I used to love to do when I was little was put on my bathing suit and play in the creek with my cousins and two sisters. We would hunt crawdads and lizards. We tried to go up or down the creek as far as we could without getting in trouble. We had a tire swing to swing over the creek. We also made mud pies and mud castles. A bunch of us always made mud balls to throw at each other. The amount of imagination you get when you mix going into the woods with a bunch of people is crazy. We always make up games to play when we are in the creek, like villains and heroes. Another thing I love to do outdoors is ride my families Polaris razor. I drive it all around at home or my family and I go somewhere to ride. We go to Windrock Park in Tennessee which has over 72,000 acres with 314 miles of trails to drive on. We get to drive for hours there and see all the amazing sights. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Bull Creek Research Paper Bull Creek is a 45–50 acre dog–friendly natural park and swimming hole owned/managed by the city of Austin. The stream running through the center is perennial and runs over a small man–made damn. The park is close to Loop 360 and there is ample parking at several points along the hiking path. Bull Creek is mainly popular as a hiking spot you can bring your dogs to, rock climbing off of one particular granite face, and swimming. We did not swim on our visit because we had our kids with us and the creek has tested positive for fecal matter on several occasions after rain – most likely overland flow washing in waste from the dogs that use the park.
