The Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders
By using data originated from the 2001–2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and
Related Conditions, Bridget F. Grant, Deborah S. Hasin, Frederick S. Stinson, Deborah A. Dawson,
Patricia Chou, June Ruan, and Roger P. Pickering discovered that 14.79% of adults in the United
States had a personality disorder (The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, 2004). According to the
American Psychiatric Association (2013), "a personality disorder is an enduring pattern of inner
experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual's culture, is
pervasive and inflexible, has an onset in adolescence or early adulthood, is stable over time, and
leads to distress or impairment" (p. 645).
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM–V) identifies ten
distinct personality disorders and groups them into three clusters which are established by
"descriptive similarities" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 645). While grouping these
personality disorders into three clusters often proves to be useful for educational and research
purposes, this system "has serious limitations and has not been consistently validated" (American
Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 645).
Although narcissistic personality disorder is very common among individuals, accompanied by
deficiencies in functioning and social abandonment, and often associated with other disorders, the
least amount of research has been conducted on this particular

ADHD Diagnostic Analysis
The incidence and prevalence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the child
population of the United States has rapidly increased over the past thirty years (Thomas, Mitchell, &
Batstra, 2013). Many researchers and psychologists are concerned about the possibility that ADHD
is over–diagnosed or even misdiagnosed, as many children who receive the diagnosis are reported to
have mild cases that may not be clinically significant and many of them are diagnosed without
fulfilling the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. The standard process of diagnosing ADHD is flawed
because there are no tests to objectively detect the disorder (Thomas, Mitchell, & Batstra, 2013), so
a therapist's biases and interpretations always play a role in the ... Show more content on

This is problematic because many patients diagnosed with ADHD have a very mild case, and may
not experience clinically significant impairment (Merten et al., 2017; Thomas, Mitchell, & Bastra,
2013). Since the DSM–IV and DSM–5 mention clinically significant impairment in their
inclusionary criteria for mental illnesses, all healthcare professionals should focus on the degree of
impairment their patients experience as a result of their ADHD symptoms when making a diagnosis.
In the future, psychologists should work with the American Psychiatric Association when writing
the DSM–6 to ensure that ADHD's diagnostic criteria is more exclusive by emphasizing the degree
to which a person's functioning is impaired by ADHD symptoms (Bruchmüller, Margraf, &
Schneider, 2012). Doing this may lead to more accurate diagnoses of patients with a potential
ADHD diagnosis, which will ultimately lead to better diagnostic treatment and healthcare services
(Gualtieri & Johnson, 2005). More exclusive criteria should help to reduce to risk of over–
diagnosing children with

Diagnostic Criteria (from the DSM–5): Excessive anxiety and worry, occurring more days than not
for at least 6 months, about a number of events or activities. The individual finds it difficult to
control the worry. For children only one of the following are required:
Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge.
Being easily fatigued.
Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank.
Irritability.
Muscle tension.
Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep, or restless, unsatisfying sleep).
The anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in
social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. The disturbance is not attributable to

Treatment
A type of psychotherapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is especially useful for treating
GAD. CBT teaches a person different ways of thinking, behaving, and reacting to situations that
help him or her feel less anxious and worried.
Doctors may also prescribe medication to help treat GAD. Your doctor will work with you to find
the best medication and dose for you. Different types of medication can be effective in GAD:
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
Serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)
Other serotonergic medication
Benzodiazepines
Doctors commonly use SSRIs and SNRIs to treat depression, but they are also helpful for the
symptoms of GAD. They may take several weeks to start working. These medications may also
cause side effects, such as headaches, nausea, or difficulty sleeping. These side effects are usually
not severe for most people, especially if the dose starts off low and is increased slowly over time.
Talk to your doctor about any side effects that you

Diagnostic Labeling Psychology
Mental disorder is a psychological problem. The disorder appears in various forms. This writing
tries to explore how clinicians and researchers practices regarding mental disorder create diagnostic
labels and how those labels in different cultural contexts functions. The final part of the paper
stresses the path of mediation to come out from mental disorder.
Clinicians and researchers prior to admitting the mentally suffered people go through the diagnosis
process. On the basis of diagnostic results, clinicians label the mentally disorder patients. The
diagnostic labeling process help clinicians and researchers to distinguish patient groups by a set of
definable boundaries (Garand, Lingler, Conner, & Dew, 2010, para. 6). At the one hand, the ... Show

The society even perceives such psychotic behaviors as madness or insanity. Schizophrenic person
shows fragmented behavior, distortion in communication, and bizarre thoughts. If a person
expresses delusions, goes hallucinations, shows incoherence speech, and reflects dysfunctional
interpersonal relation then the person immediately needs medical attention or mental therapy. But, I
have different pathways to follow in case of mental issues. Medical science claims that it cures
mental disorder. In the same way, psychiatrist suggests to undergo through different therapies to
solve mental disorder. In my views, if the sickness is in initial phase, it is better to seek help from
psychiatrist. But, if the situation is worse than normal, it is better for such abnormal people to tread
through the path of meditation and Yoga. Both the ancient practice helps to attain ultimate
happiness.
Finally, the clinicians and researchers' diagnostic labels on mental patients at the one hand helps to
categorize and study about mental patients. On the other hand, such labeling enables stereotyping.
Apart from medical and psychiatric institutions, meditation and yoga also give alternative hope to

Diagnostic Testing
There are several types of diagnostic techniques in classifying the types and conditions of knee
injuries. Currently, the method used is diagnostic tests. The doctor uses one or more tests to
determine the nature of a knee problem. In most cases, patients are given a primary diagnosis based
on their medical history, physical examination, and imaging or other procedures [7]. There are
several steps or process in determining the ACL diagnosis system. The process starts with a medical
history, where the patient's history is reviewed for further action. MRI is a non–invasive type of
diagnosis. In MRI, an accurate diagnosis for ACL test could be obtained [17]. MRI is the best
technique in evaluating the knee joint since its sensitivity is 90%.

Diagnostic Criteria
The current diagnostic criteria for social anxiety disorder can be found in the DSM–5. The criteria
are split into ten different diagnostic features (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The first
diagnostic feature is one or more situations where fear or anxiety occurs due to possible negative
evaluation received from others (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The second feature is the
fear is of negative evaluation such as humiliation (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The
third feature is that social settings continually cause this anxiety or fear (American Psychiatric
Association, 2013). The fourth feature is the avoidance of social settings or large amounts of anxiety
or fear when experiencing social settings (American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most anxiety disorders tend to involve fear of negative evaluation while fear of positive evaluation
is found solely in social anxiety disorder (Rodebaugh, Weeks, Gordon, Langer, & Heimberg, 2012).
If more empirical support is gathered, there may need to be a change in social anxiety disorder's
Criterion A and B that will add positive evaluation or change negative evaluation to simply be called
evaluation (Rodebaugh, Weeks, Gordon, Langer, & Heimberg, 2012). Another possible change
would be to create a fear of positive evaluation only specifier which would be similar to the
performance only specifier. Social anxiety disorder may need to be reevaluated and critiqued if this
theory gains more support. (Weeks, Jakatdar, & Heimberg, 2010). This is a theory I am interested in
and believe could be an important finding. I am currently working on creating thesis proposal that
involves the fear of positive evaluation and alcohol

Diagnostic Imaging
X– ray is electromagnetic radiation that penetrates structures within the body and creates images of
these structures on photographic film or a fluorescent screen. Diagnostic x– ray is useful in
detecting abnormalities within the body. They are a painless, non–invasive way to help diagnose
problems such as broken bones, tumors, dental decay, and the presence of foreign bodies. Computed
tomography (CT) is a modern imaging tool that combines X–rays with computer technology to
produce a more detailed, cross–sectional image of patient's body. A CT scan lets the doctor see the
size, shape, and position of structures that are deep inside patients' body such as organs, tissues, or
tumors. The doctor need to use CT if the patient has a problem with a small, bony structure or have
severe trauma to the brain, spinal cord, chest, abdomen, or pelvis. ... Show more content on

IMPACT ON PLANNING ASSESSMENT SCHEDULES DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT?
Diagnostic assessment is an essential device in a teacher's "toolkit", which can be used to diagnose
strengths and area of need in all students. Diagnostic assessment is intended to improve the learner's
experience and their level of achievement. However, diagnostic assessment looks backward rather
than forwards. It assesses what the learner already knows and/or the nature of difficulties that the
learner might have, which, if undiagnosed, might limit their engagement in new learning. It is often
used before teaching or when a problem arises. Diagnostic assessment involves the gathering and
careful evaluation of detailed dates using student's knowledge and skills in a given learning area.
ADVANTAGES OF DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT Can help teachers identify their student's
current knowledge, skill sets, and capabilities. Can also clarify any misconceptions before teaching

Single Axis Diagnostic Analysis
Before, the DSM 4 used a 5–Axis diagnosis to address the whole person (DSM–IV–TR Multiaxial
Diagnosis and the DSM–5 Single Axis Diagnosis [PowerPoint PDF], 2013). Today, the DSM 5 uses
the single axis approach (DSM–IV–TR Multiaxial Diagnosis and the DSM–5 Single Axis Diagnosis
[PowerPoint PDF], 2013). In my opinion, the single axis approach is favorable because there is no
separation of personality disorders (DSM–IV–TR Multiaxial Diagnosis and the DSM–5 Single Axis
Diagnosis [PowerPoint PDF], 2013). "No separation of personality disorders" means: no misguided
belief that these disorders were largely untreatable and medical conditions can be listed side–by–
side with the mental disorder (DSM–IV–TR Multiaxial Diagnosis and the DSM–5 Single Axis ...

My conceptualization of mental illness, and treatment is that it's much more ethical than before.
Today, we cannot condemn someone to a psychiatric center because we feel like it, let alone leave
someone there. What I found the most alarming/surprising aspect of the podcast was the way people
with mental illness was treated back in 1869. It was easy to enter a psychiatric center, but it was
very hard to get out. They accepted people who were troublesome, embarrassing, and strange (e.g.
minor psychological issues) (Britt & Christenfeld, 2007). At most, it was difficult to leave a
psychiatric center because families would often drop off their troublesome family member and
never return (Britt & Christenfeld, 2007). Also, if patients did leave, they weren't prepaid for the
outside world (Britt & Christenfeld, 2007). Today, it's the opposite, it's hard to get in the psychiatric
center, but it is easy to leave (Britt & Christenfeld, 2007). The only way a person could be
committed to a psychiatric center is when several psychiatrists are required to sign as proof that the
individual is a danger to others and themselves (Britt & Christenfeld, 2007). In contrast, when a
person leaves a psychiatric center, they have people preparing a smoother ride for their

Limitations Of Rapid Diagnostics
Timely administration of appropriate antibiotics is essential for decreasing hospital mortality in
patients with sepsis12. Kumar et al. demonstrated that with each hour delay, there is a 7.6%
decrease in survival. Moreover, delaying appropriate antibiotics can increase healthcare costs, length
of stay and antimicrobial resistance13, 14. Traditional methods of microbial identification have time
concerns. Most laboratories take 48–72 hours to determine microorganisms' susceptibility testing10,

In another study by the same author, compared a historical control group with MALDI–TOF MS
coupled with antimicrobial stewardship and showed mortality benefits (21% vs 8.9%; p = 0.01)19.
The later study overcame some of the limitations of the previous study and included only patients
with antibiotic–resistance gram negative bacteremia with sufficient sample size. Selecting the most
appropriate and cost effective rapid diagnostic testing is somehow challenging given the wide range
of commercially available diagnostic tools. Some of these tools require labor intensive clinical
laboratories work with high complexity10. For gram–negative bacteremia, two tools have potential
clinical benefits, Verigene gram–negative blood culture (BC–GN) and FilmArray blood culture
identification (BCID) given their ability to detect resistance patterns in certain microorganisms and
have a short turnaround time after a positive blood culture. A study by MacVane S et al. examined
the usefulness of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) coupled with BCID versus
conventional organism identification coupled with ASP or conventional organism identification
(controls) alone20. Although microorganism identification was shorter in the BCID group (17 hours

Cd Diagnostic Test
Individuals suspected of having CD may undergo physical examination and diagnostic tests to
determine whether the individual has the disease, and differentiate between CD or other intestinal
diseases such as UC, diverticular disease or colon cancer, which have many similar symptoms to
CD. During a physical examination, bloating, pain following gently tapping of the abdomen or
appearance of unusual intestinal sounds, detected via auscultatory methods using a stethoscope, are
used to aid in the diagnosis of IBD but not CD.
CD can only be determined via diagnostic tests as it is not possible to determine which areas, as
well as which layers, of the GIT are affected via superficial examination. Some diagnostic tests
performed to detect CD are lab tests, Upper Gastrointestinal (UG) series, Computed Tomography
(CT) scans, Magnetic Resonance Enterography (MRE) scans and intestinal endoscopies.

I interviewed Peter Arsenault, a School Psychologist for a local high school in South Jersey. Our
interviewed focused on diagnostic assessments and his role in the process of evaluating individuals
with exceptionalities. Arsenault stated the leading method for identifying whether a child is SLD is
discrepancy analysis. This involves looking at the overall scores such as FSIQ, reading, math or
writing. His preference is the neuropsychological. He explains this based on his doctorate studies.
He further contends that neuropsychology looks at both cognitive, and learning as well as attention
and executive functioning. Tests should be administered with the goal of getting the most accurate
reading of the child, says Arsenault. Ways to do this are, make sure the child took his/her
medications, got a decent night's sleep and for students with weakness in language reasoning, you
can deem the language parts of the cognitive assessment as invalid and focus more on the visual–
spatial. I was struck by the way Arsenault interprets information about diagnostics. His view is that
the assessments are not a "stead–fast, concrete representation of a child's abilities forever"
(Arsenault). This viewpoint is encouraging to me because most of my experiences have been that ...

The Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders...
History of DSM The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is a mental
health diagnostic system that allow clinicians (i.e. psychiatrics, psychologists, social workers,
occupational therapists and nurses) to have a common understanding of mental health conditions
(American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000). It also enables clinicians, pharmaceutical
companies, researchers and policy–makers to make clear decisions around access to services and
treatment guidelines for the clients. The first version of the DSM was published in 1952 (APA,
1952) and major updates were made in 1968 and 1980, which subsequently became DSM–II and
DSM–III (APA, 1968; APA, 1980). DSM–III was considered to have the most significant changes
from its previous two iteration (Widiger & Mullins–Sweatt, 2008; Widiger & Trull, 2007). First, the
DSM–III moved away from the psychodynamic underpinnings of the previous editions which
resulted in terminology used that does not reflect a particular theory of therapy. Secondly, the
introduction of the multiaxial assessment system allowed clinicians to give a more comprehensive
diagnosis, where psychiatric problems were described on each of the five axes respectively: Clinical
Syndromes / Disorders(Axis I), Personality Disorders / Mental Retardation(Axis II), Medical
Conditions(Axis III), Psychosocial and Environmental Stressors(Axis IV), and Global Assessment
of Functioning(Axis V)(APA, 1980). Thirdly, it made use of specific diagnostic

Cipani's Diagnostic Analysis
Cipani (1994) discussed methods for assessment and treatment for children with developmental and
learning disabilities with severe behavior concerns. The four features of a diagnostic system that is
behaviorally based are discussed. The first characteristic examines the antecedents and
consequences of the child's behavior, as opposed to predicting the function of the problem behavior
based on the child's internal cognitions or personality traits. The second characteristic encompasses
the notion that the treatments for the problem behavior are based on the behavior itself and not
internal factors of the child. The third characteristic is that the assessment process includes gathering
information about the child's environments; thus, the assessment process involves more than simply
gathering information on the frequency of the behavior. This process includes the practitioner
gathering information on the antecedents before the target behavior occurs and the consequences
after the target behavior occurs. The last phase involves the practitioner making a diagnostic
decision about the child based on his or her problem behaviors. Behaviorally–based diagnostic
system involves three states. The first stage, "Assessment Function", also known as functional
analysis, involves gathering information on the child's environment and ... Show more content on

"among individuals, as well as nations, respect for the rights of others is peace." This phrase has
stuck with me for most of my life. This quote is meaningful to me, because it is about having
respect towards others, their rights and property. Particularly my father always brought it to my

The DSM-5 Diagnostic Analysis
While the DSM–5 remains largely based on categorical nosology, the introduction acknowledges the
need for a more dimensional approach (APA, 2013). In fact, the DSM–5 task force and work groups
were instructed to consider empirically–based guidelines to improve dimensional aspects of disorder
categorization such as: shared neural substrates, biomarkers, family traits, course of illness, high
comorbidity, genetic risk factors, and shared treatment response. While the DSM–5 task force
ultimately decided that it was scientifically premature to transition to a completely dimensional
diagnostic system that would have in effect changed the requirements for most disorders, the current
edition serves as a transitional guideline to new diagnostic approaches without dramatically
disrupting current clinical practice/research (APA, 2013). Dimensional approaches can be observed
throughout the DSM–5 through the consolidation of related disorders, Section III additions, and
supplemental online materials. Consolidation of Disorders. The DSM–5 contains reorganized,

DSM–5 asserts that this modification serves to improve sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis

Parkinson's Diagnostics
Diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is not a simplistic process. Currently, there is not a precise way of
diagnosing Parkinson's, rather Parkinson's diagnostics is based on clinical presentations and ruling
out all other possible explanations for the patient's symptoms. As a result a correct clinical
diagnostics for Parkinson's disease can take anywhere from two months to eighteen years,
depending on the clinical presentation. Additionally many patients are misdiagnosed with
Parkinson's, leading to inappropriate treatment, management, and prognosis. Over the past decade,
many neuroimaging diagnostic techniques have been developed using PET scans or SPECT scans.
SPECT scans are a cheaper and more versatile neuroimaging technique than PET scans, ... Show

It also aids in misdiagnosis of Parkinson's as some Parkinson's–diagnosed patients did not show
evidence of a dopaminergic deficit in their scans, suggesting that there may be need for an alternate
diagnosis. DAT–SPECT imaging has shown to be effective in distinguishing normal patients from
Parkinson's disease patients, which supports the use of DAT–SPECT as a diagnostic tool for
Parkinson's. DAT–SPECT has also been suggested for use in prognosis of Parkinson's disease, with
less success. It has been difficult to determine a correlation between tracer uptake and disease
severity and low DAT binding did not always correspond to poor prognosis. Additionally, DAT–
SPECT has not been shown to aid in differentiation of patients with diseases that all present with
presynaptic dopaminergic deficiency. DAT–SPECT cannot be used to differentiate between
Parkinson's disease and other degenerative cases such as multiple system atrophy, progressive
supranuclear palsy, and corticobasal degeneration. Overall, DAT–SPECT may aid in diagnosis of
Parkinson's disease in many cases but cannot definitively diagnosis or rule out

Diagnostic And Diagnostic Classification System Essay
Introduction
Mental health disorders has been very strenuous and complex to understand and diagnose, many
diagnosis criteria such as DSM have been used to determine the disorders and medication (Szabo,
2011). I am asserting that "Yes, Psychopathology diagnostic classification systems (such as the
DSM or ICD) are of little use to health professionals and patients because behaviours are often
misidentified and medicalised". To assert this, this paper is going to explore four main topics that
contribute to the little use of psychopathology diagnostic classification system, these include
downsides for using DSM diagnostic criteria, Medicalisation and misdiagnose, consequences of
medicalisation to the health professionals and community and Psychological trauma in patients.
Szabo, (2011) states that Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has been
utilised to diagnose and categorize mental illness in psychiatry. However this diagnosis is focused
on definitions of operational rather than the cause (Warelow & Holmes, 2011). This paper will first
explore the downside of using DSM criteria to diagnose mental health.
Downsides for using DSM diagnostic criteria
Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder as a diagnostic method has been of
little use for clients and health professionals as this method gives indications that are similar for
nearly all mental health issues (Johnstone, 2008). The fact is that there is no individuals who can

There is also swelling that causes joint stiffness, brittle nails, thin skin that is cool, and trophic skin
changes. It is common for X–rays to show noticeable bone loss and osteoporosis at this stage of
CRPS. Stage three, also known as atrophic stage, occurs six to twelve months from the start of
symptoms and can last many years. At this stage, pain continues to worsen and spread to other areas
of the body. The edema begins to harden and contractures occur. The extremity affected has a
decrease in temperature, and there are atrophic skin changes, such as changes to the fingers and
toes, that are unchangeable. "X–rays are likely to show demineralization and ankylosis. Throughout
each stage of CRPS, some motor disorders may also occur. These ... Show more content on

Most complications begin to occur when stage four is reached. "A list of the various complications
seen with CRPS is as follows: agitation, cardiac disturbance, depression, disturbance of immune

Diamond Syndrome (spontaneous bruising), gastrointestinal complications, GERDS, headaches or
migraines, hearing complications, hypothyroidism, insomnia, internal organ involvement, interstitial
cystitis, intractable hypertension, irritability, keratitis sicca (dry eyes), limbic system dysfunction,
low cortisol levels, movement disorders, respiratory system complications, skin lesions, rashes,
ulcers, spread of CRPS, tinnitus, urological complications, visual disturbance, and vulvodynia."10

likely not to advance through all the stages therefore preventing many of these

Diagnostic Mammograms
Mammograms are used for screening purposes and for accurate diagnosis of breast cancer or
diseases. Screening and diagnostic mammograms are the two types of mammograms. National
Cancer Institute (2016) states, "Screening mammograms usually involve two or more x–ray
pictures, or images, of each breast. Diagnostic mammograms can also be used to check for breast
cancer after a lump or other sign or symptom of the disease has been found". There are several
issues concerning mammograms such as false–positive results. In addition, screening is an issue
with individuals with breast implants. False– positive results is could be caused if the individual is
taking hormonal therapy or have dense breast tissue. National Cancer Institute (2016) explains,
"More than 50% of women screened annually for 10 years in the United States will experience a ...

The Center of Disease Control and Prevention (2016) gives a breakdown of the steps for conducting
a mammogram, "You will stand in front of a special X–ray machine. A technologist will place your
breast on a clear plastic plate. Another plate will firmly press your breast from above. The plates
will flatten the breast, holding it still while the X–ray is being taken. You will feel some pressure.
The steps are repeated to make a side view of the breast. The other breast will be X–rayed in the
same way". However, there are issues with high dose of radiation causing cancer with repeated
mammograms. Information gather from mammograms include early breast cancer diagnosis, which
aids in prompt treatment that could save individuals lives. Using a diagnostic mammogram is
conducted after an abnormal screening mammogram. It is essential to educate the public of the signs
and symptoms of breast cancer such as lumps, nipple discharge, breast pain, and changes of the
shape and size of the breast. The advance practice nurse should know that screening mammograms

Medical Diagnostic Devices
Healthcare, and all that it provides, is considered one of the most precious resources in the United
States today. Everyone has been there. After days of feeling crummy you break down and go the
doctor. After all, there is so much you need to do. From your child's soccer game your little one has
been talking about for days, your cousin's wedding with the perfect dress hanging in the closet and
of course, you cannot afford to miss work. So there you are, in the doctor's office with the all
important question. What is wrong with me? Thankfully, with modern day science, there is
technology available to peer inside and discover what stands between you, the soccer field sideline,
and embarrassing your family by dancing the "Macarena." With each passing year, the
sophistication of medical diagnostic devices increases with disruption to the traditional and
centralized diagnostic delivery model. A review of five medical diagnostic devices available today,
or coming soon to a healthcare facility near you, will be reviewed along with how it will disrupt the
current model.
Capsule Endoscopy According to Christensen, Grossman, and Hwang (2009), medical device and
diagnostic equipment (MDDE) is progressively decentralized with each pass year in a predictable
and consistent fashion. This pattern of change may be seen in every discipline of medicine including
the arena of endoscopy, which involves a visual examination of the gastrointestinal tract. The

they can overlap. According to our text the following defines both types of procedures. Diagnostic
procedure: a procedure performed to obtain information needed to make a diagnosis and treatment
plan. Therapeutic procedure: a procedure performed to treat a disease or condition. Mammograms
and colonoscopies are examples of diagnostic procedures. However, a colonoscopy can be a
procedure that overlaps and provides a therapeutic service. In the case of a diagnostic colonoscopy
where polyps are discovered and removed at the same time, the code would need to reflect that the
therapeutic service was performed. You would NOT code the diagnostic colonoscopy. ... Show more

Physicians routinely order a panel of lab tests for their patients however, that does not mean that all
the tests meet the requirement for medical necessity. This can be an expensive problem for patients
that are on Medicare and Medicaid. Physicians must provide patients with the ABN if they suspect
that these tests will not be covered. Labs can offer discounts to physicians through panel pricing
however by ordering a panel it might be that the patient will have to pick up the tab. For example,
the General Health Panel is not covered by Medicare and some other insurance carriers. One lab in
Washington State clearly stated on their site that it would be more appropriate for physicians to
order the tests individually and document the medical necessity of the test with the appropriate
ICD–10 diagnostic code. Custom profiles are panels that are often ordered by certain providers to
treat and manage their patient. However, the Washington lab discouraged this practice but suggested
that the provider meet with their marketing representative who has underwent compliance training.
If it the diagnosis supports the medical necessity the marketing representative can assist the provider

In consideration of some of Crawford's early childhood occurrences, it may be possible to speculate
on the etiology and possible diagnosis for conditions that Mrs. Crawford might have been suffering
throughout her life. Joan Crawford was born at the turn of the century as Lucille Fay LeSueur in San
Antonio, Texas to a single mother as Joan's father left the family shortly before her birth ("American
Legends," 2013). Though there are claims that her actual birthdate was before 1908, the date printed
at the place of her interment reads as 1908–1977. For Hollywood starlets, lying about age might
elongate audience and industry interest especially in regard to women, therefore it is easy to
understand why the relentlessly ambitious and accomplished actress might have felt compelled to be
untruthful over the years. Crawford had to climb her way to the top never having a moment to
assess all the obstacles with which she would face throughout her life though, according to her, she
would never have accepted professional assessment during her life as she explains to talk show host
David Frost, "I have never had to go to a psychologist or psychiatrist because I feel if you have an
ounce of good sense and one good friend, you'll never have to go to a psychiatrist" (The David Frost
Show, 1970). With attention to the enormous influence of the Roaring Twenties, Joan Crawford
certainly embodied the newfound independence, freedom, and

Diagnostic Assessments
This study assessed the variation of results for diagnostic assessments across cultures. The author's
attempted to identify factors that contributed to the variation between populations and cultures when
using psychological assessment tools. This study was conducted through collected data from several
countries databases and research. The authors gathered data from the World Health Organization
standard diagnostic system, Epidemiological Catchment area studies, Diagnostic Interview case
identification studies, and National Comorbidity Surveys, among others. Analysis of both national
and international research revealed that practitioners did not provide consistent diagnoses across
cultures even when standardized diagnostic tools were used. ... Show more content on

These diagnostic errors were attributed to the cultural misunderstandings in communication during
interviews. The authors further posit that most traditional diagnostic practices are views of Euro–
American conceptualizations, and the process of patient / practitioner interactions can complicate
assessments when individuals differ in cultural backgrounds. Depending on the cultural background
of the individuals using the assessment tools, may determine the way assessments are used and
interpreted. Therefore, the authors posit that a need to understand cross–cultural differences in the
use and interpretation of assessment tools should be considered. This article may be useful for
informing audiences how cultural differences among individuals can impact the use and
interpretation of diagnostic assessments. In addition, practitioners should be aware of personal
cultural influences that may affect their use and interpretation of assessments. Accordingly, if
practitioners have knowledge of cultural differences among populations, this knowledge may help
practitioners mitigate the disparity of inappropriate diagnoses for individuals who come from
different cultures other than their

The beginning settlements of the Massachusetts and Virginia colonies were both brought together by
the similar groups of people, however their different beginnings as a colony, views on religion, and
means of economic stability created two different political and economic systems.
The colonies of Virginia and Massachusetts were both established during the same time, but the
ways that they were established were very different .The Virginia colony had many failures and
close calls, while on the other hand Massachusetts landed a successful first settlement. Their smart
decisions regarding food and planning made this possible. Virginia did not have good person in a

Virginia began to create plantations for tobacco and Massachusetts was a seaport, both began to
suffer from the increase of immigrants. The immigrants created a lot of competition for work. Both
societies were engulfed with an increase of immigrants, creating a competition for jobs. Boston was
in bad shape and people looked to the community for help. Virginia made its money through
tobacco, and along with that came an increase in slavery. On the other hand Massachusetts did not
have as great of a demand for slaves. Though both of the settlements had different tactics, neither of
them could avoid the problems from increase of immigration and both relied on their separate
means of making profit.
To conclude, it can be seen that both colonies, had similar goals as to what needed to be done to
make their colonies last, but the methods that were used were very different. From Virginia and
Massachusetts it can be determined that two colonies with the same goal can come to two separate

The Diagnostic Statistical Manual For Mental Health
The Diagnostic Statistical Manual is an extremely important asset to the mental health field. The
DSM was created to assist clinicians in diagnosing and recognizing mental illness in their clients. It
has been used for over six decades and there are a total of five editions. Each edition has some
updated and new information that wasn't included in the last edition. The reason for the changes in
the DSM is because the mental health field is always evolving. There's new information that's
discovered from research and is implemented into the next DSM. All mental health clinicians have
the common goal of providing treatment to their clients in the best and most effect way possible.
Homosexuality was once labeled a mental illness in the DSM, but in a later edition it was removed
from the DSM. In May 2013, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) published the fifth
edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM–5). This culminated 12
years of work with the stated goal of "enhancing the clinical usefulness of DSM–5 as a guide in the
diagnosis of mental disorders" (APA, 2013, p. 5). The latest edition of the DSM is DSM–5 it
represents some of the most current information on clinical psychology. Clinicians all over the
world use the same DSM and that's important for whole host of reasons. Some reason are to ensure
that everyone is getting the best treatment possible and to make sure clinicians are following a
guideline to diagnose people and not just

The Diagnostic And Statistical Manuals
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals (DSMs) have long provided diagnostic guidelines for both
clinical and research use in psychiatry and psychology all around the world. The tension between
categorical and dimensional conceptualisations in assessing psychiatric syndromes and disorders is
reflected in debate. Despite the ongoing concerns, recent discussions have argued for the
implementation of a dimensional classification system, the categorical approach continues to
dominate the field of psychology and psychiatry linked to clinical practice. This essay will present a

First and foremost, it is intended to provide a helpful guide to clinical practice. Proponents of
categorical systems assert that clinical practice favours categorical characterisation; categories serve
the practical aim of specifying the scope of clinically significant psychopathology in need of
treatment, and of creating boundaries between syndromes in order to facilitate communication.
There are numerous benefits to a categorical approach to psychiatric diagnoses in general and
schizophrenia. Historically, psychiatry emerged as a discipline based on informal rules of
categorisation of everyday experiences, developed to draw distinctions based on the healthy and the
ill. This was used as attempt to introduce formal and universal diagnostic criteria guided to promote
clear communication and reliability, validity and amongst clinicians whom held different view on
disorders. Firstly, categorical diagnoses facilitate decision–making process regarding individuals
who present clinically worth psychosis regarding treatments methods like antipsychotic drug
therapy (Kraemer & O'Hara, 2004). Thus, it is particularly useful when a clinician is required to
make a decision about diagnoses and treatment methods. The current categorical approaches provide
clinicians with a framework of reference for treating patients with psychotic disorders. As

Diagnostic Lab
Problem Statement
Cell filtration is often necessary for diagnostic lab tests. One example of this is for cystic fibrosis
patients. Individuals with cystic fibrosis often get lung infections due to the thick mucus in their
lungs. In order to prescribe antibiotics for these lung infections, a bacterial culture needs to be
performed, which requires bacterial samples to be separated from the thick mucus of sputum.
Passive filtration is the most commonly used type of filtration in cell sorting for diagnostic purposes
and extorts cells physical properties (Yoon et al., 2016). Dead end filtration is a form of passive
filtration where the filtrate is added perpendicularly to the filter (Yoon et al., 2016). While dead end
filtration is relatively easy to perform, larger particles can block the filter, stopping the flow of
filtrate through the filter. This blockage problem causes dead end filtration to be underutilized
(Mugnier, Howell, & Ruf, 2000). It has been shown that a cycle of forward and backward flushes
can dislodge larger particles from the filter– allowing more of the smaller particles to rush through
the filter pores (Smith, Vigneswaran, Ngo, Ben–Aim, & Nguyen, 2005)– but what percentage of
backward flush is most efficient in a duty cycle with a constant amount ... Show more content on

The intelligence community needs to work even harder to get information on ISIS. There are five

including food, energy, and protection. These main pillars cover a wide range of services and
products that DuPont provides its customers. Scientific breakthroughs and advancements allow
DuPont to constantly expand its capabilities and products. Therefore, new products are often

The Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders

  • 1. The Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders By using data originated from the 2001–2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, Bridget F. Grant, Deborah S. Hasin, Frederick S. Stinson, Deborah A. Dawson, Patricia Chou, June Ruan, and Roger P. Pickering discovered that 14.79% of adults in the United States had a personality disorder (The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, 2004). According to the American Psychiatric Association (2013), "a personality disorder is an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual's culture, is pervasive and inflexible, has an onset in adolescence or early adulthood, is stable over time, and leads to distress or impairment" (p. 645). The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM–V) identifies ten distinct personality disorders and groups them into three clusters which are established by "descriptive similarities" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 645). While grouping these personality disorders into three clusters often proves to be useful for educational and research purposes, this system "has serious limitations and has not been consistently validated" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 645). Although narcissistic personality disorder is very common among individuals, accompanied by deficiencies in functioning and social abandonment, and often associated with other disorders, the least amount of research has been conducted on this particular ... • 2. ADHD Diagnostic Analysis The incidence and prevalence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the child population of the United States has rapidly increased over the past thirty years (Thomas, Mitchell, & Batstra, 2013). Many researchers and psychologists are concerned about the possibility that ADHD is over–diagnosed or even misdiagnosed, as many children who receive the diagnosis are reported to have mild cases that may not be clinically significant and many of them are diagnosed without fulfilling the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. The standard process of diagnosing ADHD is flawed because there are no tests to objectively detect the disorder (Thomas, Mitchell, & Batstra, 2013), so a therapist's biases and interpretations always play a role in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is problematic because many patients diagnosed with ADHD have a very mild case, and may not experience clinically significant impairment (Merten et al., 2017; Thomas, Mitchell, & Bastra, 2013). Since the DSM–IV and DSM–5 mention clinically significant impairment in their inclusionary criteria for mental illnesses, all healthcare professionals should focus on the degree of impairment their patients experience as a result of their ADHD symptoms when making a diagnosis. In the future, psychologists should work with the American Psychiatric Association when writing the DSM–6 to ensure that ADHD's diagnostic criteria is more exclusive by emphasizing the degree to which a person's functioning is impaired by ADHD symptoms (Bruchmüller, Margraf, & Schneider, 2012). Doing this may lead to more accurate diagnoses of patients with a potential ADHD diagnosis, which will ultimately lead to better diagnostic treatment and healthcare services (Gualtieri & Johnson, 2005). More exclusive criteria should help to reduce to risk of over– diagnosing children with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The individual finds it difficult to control the worry. For children only one of the following are required: Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge. Being easily fatigued. Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank. Irritability. Muscle tension. Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep, or restless, unsatisfying sleep). The anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Etiology Treatment A type of psychotherapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is especially useful for treating GAD. CBT teaches a person different ways of thinking, behaving, and reacting to situations that help him or her feel less anxious and worried. Doctors may also prescribe medication to help treat GAD. Your doctor will work with you to find the best medication and dose for you. Different types of medication can be effective in GAD: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) Serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) Other serotonergic medication Benzodiazepines Doctors commonly use SSRIs and SNRIs to treat depression, but they are also helpful for the symptoms of GAD. They may take several weeks to start working. These medications may also cause side effects, such as headaches, nausea, or difficulty sleeping. These side effects are usually not severe for most people, especially if the dose starts off low and is increased slowly over time. Talk to your doctor about any side effects that you ... • 4. Diagnostic Labeling Psychology Mental disorder is a psychological problem. The disorder appears in various forms. This writing tries to explore how clinicians and researchers practices regarding mental disorder create diagnostic labels and how those labels in different cultural contexts functions. The final part of the paper stresses the path of mediation to come out from mental disorder. Clinicians and researchers prior to admitting the mentally suffered people go through the diagnosis process. On the basis of diagnostic results, clinicians label the mentally disorder patients. The diagnostic labeling process help clinicians and researchers to distinguish patient groups by a set of definable boundaries (Garand, Lingler, Conner, & Dew, 2010, para. 6). But, I have different pathways to follow in case of mental issues. Medical science claims that it cures mental disorder. In the same way, psychiatrist suggests to undergo through different therapies to solve mental disorder. In my views, if the sickness is in initial phase, it is better to seek help from psychiatrist. But, if the situation is worse than normal, it is better for such abnormal people to tread through the path of meditation and Yoga. Both the ancient practice helps to attain ultimate happiness. The doctor uses one or more tests to determine the nature of a knee problem. In most cases, patients are given a primary diagnosis based on their medical history, physical examination, and imaging or other procedures [7]. There are several steps or process in determining the ACL diagnosis system. The process starts with a medical history, where the patient's history is reviewed for further action. MRI is a non–invasive type of diagnosis. In MRI, an accurate diagnosis for ACL test could be obtained [17]. MRI is the best technique in evaluating the knee joint since its sensitivity is 90%. ... The criteria are split into ten different diagnostic features (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The first diagnostic feature is one or more situations where fear or anxiety occurs due to possible negative evaluation received from others (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The second feature is the fear is of negative evaluation such as humiliation (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The third feature is that social settings continually cause this anxiety or fear (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Most anxiety disorders tend to involve fear of negative evaluation while fear of positive evaluation is found solely in social anxiety disorder (Rodebaugh, Weeks, Gordon, Langer, & Heimberg, 2012). If more empirical support is gathered, there may need to be a change in social anxiety disorder's Criterion A and B that will add positive evaluation or change negative evaluation to simply be called evaluation (Rodebaugh, Weeks, Gordon, Langer, & Heimberg, 2012). Another possible change would be to create a fear of positive evaluation only specifier which would be similar to the performance only specifier. Social anxiety disorder may need to be reevaluated and critiqued if this theory gains more support. (Weeks, Jakatdar, & Heimberg, 2010). EXPLAIN INITIAL AND DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT, RETENTION AND ACHIEVEMENT, IMPACT ON PLANNING ASSESSMENT SCHEDULES DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT? Diagnostic assessment is an essential device in a teacher's "toolkit", which can be used to diagnose strengths and area of need in all students. Diagnostic assessment is intended to improve the learner's experience and their level of achievement. However, diagnostic assessment looks backward rather than forwards. It assesses what the learner already knows and/or the nature of difficulties that the learner might have, which, if undiagnosed, might limit their engagement in new learning. It is often used before teaching or when a problem arises. Diagnostic assessment involves the gathering and careful evaluation of detailed dates using student's knowledge and skills in a given learning area. ADVANTAGES OF DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT Can help teachers identify their student's current knowledge, skill sets, and capabilities. Can also clarify any misconceptions before teaching takes place learner planning. Diagnostic assessments of reading ability are commonly used to identify students at risk for reading problems DISADVANTAGES OF DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT Pretests can cause anxiety in students who aren't sure of the material Interviews can be time–consuming Self–assessments are not true assessments. Single Axis Diagnostic Analysis Before, the DSM 4 used a 5–Axis diagnosis to address the whole person (DSM–IV–TR Multiaxial Diagnosis and the DSM–5 Single Axis Diagnosis [PowerPoint PDF], 2013). Today, the DSM 5 uses the single axis approach (DSM–IV–TR Multiaxial Diagnosis and the DSM–5 Single Axis Diagnosis [PowerPoint PDF], 2013). In my opinion, the single axis approach is favorable because there is no separation of personality disorders (DSM–IV–TR Multiaxial Diagnosis and the DSM–5 Single Axis Diagnosis [PowerPoint PDF], 2013). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My conceptualization of mental illness, and treatment is that it's much more ethical than before. Today, we cannot condemn someone to a psychiatric center because we feel like it, let alone leave someone there. What I found the most alarming/surprising aspect of the podcast was the way people with mental illness was treated back in 1869. It was easy to enter a psychiatric center, but it was very hard to get out. They accepted people who were troublesome, embarrassing, and strange (e.g. minor psychological issues) (Britt & Christenfeld, 2007). At most, it was difficult to leave a psychiatric center because families would often drop off their troublesome family member and never return (Britt & Christenfeld, 2007). Also, if patients did leave, they weren't prepaid for the outside world (Britt & Christenfeld, 2007). Today, it's the opposite, it's hard to get in the psychiatric center, but it is easy to leave (Britt & Christenfeld, 2007). The only way a person could be committed to a psychiatric center is when several psychiatrists are required to sign as proof that the individual is a danger to others and themselves (Britt & Christenfeld, 2007). In contrast, when a person leaves a psychiatric center, they have people preparing a smoother ride for their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Kumar et al. demonstrated that with each hour delay, there is a 7.6% decrease in survival. Most laboratories take 48–72 hours to determine microorganisms' susceptibility testing10, 15. Some of these tools require labor intensive clinical laboratories work with high complexity10. For gram–negative bacteremia, two tools have potential clinical benefits, Verigene gram–negative blood culture (BC–GN) and FilmArray blood culture identification (BCID) given their ability to detect resistance patterns in certain microorganisms and have a short turnaround time after a positive blood culture. A study by MacVane S et al. examined the usefulness of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) coupled with BCID versus conventional organism identification coupled with ASP or conventional organism identification (controls) alone20. Cd Diagnostic Test Individuals suspected of having CD may undergo physical examination and diagnostic tests to determine whether the individual has the disease, and differentiate between CD or other intestinal diseases such as UC, diverticular disease or colon cancer, which have many similar symptoms to CD. During a physical examination, bloating, pain following gently tapping of the abdomen or appearance of unusual intestinal sounds, detected via auscultatory methods using a stethoscope, are used to aid in the diagnosis of IBD but not CD. CD can only be determined via diagnostic tests as it is not possible to determine which areas, as well as which layers, of the GIT are affected via superficial examination. Some diagnostic tests performed to detect CD are lab tests, Upper Gastrointestinal (UG) series, Computed Tomography (CT) scans, Magnetic Resonance Enterography (MRE) scans and intestinal endoscopies. Our interviewed focused on diagnostic assessments and his role in the process of evaluating individuals with exceptionalities. Arsenault stated the leading method for identifying whether a child is SLD is discrepancy analysis. This involves looking at the overall scores such as FSIQ, reading, math or writing. His preference is the neuropsychological. He explains this based on his doctorate studies. He further contends that neuropsychology looks at both cognitive, and learning as well as attention and executive functioning. Tests should be administered with the goal of getting the most accurate reading of the child, says Arsenault. Ways to do this are, make sure the child took his/her medications, got a decent night's sleep and for students with weakness in language reasoning, you can deem the language parts of the cognitive assessment as invalid and focus more on the visual– spatial. I was struck by the way Arsenault interprets information about diagnostics. • 17. The Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders... History of DSM The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is a mental health diagnostic system that allow clinicians (i.e. psychiatrics, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and nurses) to have a common understanding of mental health conditions (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000). It also enables clinicians, pharmaceutical companies, researchers and policy–makers to make clear decisions around access to services and treatment guidelines for the clients. The first version of the DSM was published in 1952 (APA, 1952) and major updates were made in 1968 and 1980, which subsequently became DSM–II and DSM–III (APA, 1968; APA, 1980). DSM–III was considered to have the most significant changes from its previous two iteration (Widiger & Mullins–Sweatt, 2008; Widiger & Trull, 2007). First, the DSM–III moved away from the psychodynamic underpinnings of the previous editions which resulted in terminology used that does not reflect a particular theory of therapy. Secondly, the introduction of the multiaxial assessment system allowed clinicians to give a more comprehensive diagnosis, where psychiatric problems were described on each of the five axes respectively: Clinical Syndromes / Disorders(Axis I), Personality Disorders / Mental Retardation(Axis II), Medical Conditions(Axis III), Psychosocial and Environmental Stressors(Axis IV), and Global Assessment of Functioning(Axis V)(APA, 1980). • 18. Cipani's Diagnostic Analysis Cipani (1994) discussed methods for assessment and treatment for children with developmental and learning disabilities with severe behavior concerns. The four features of a diagnostic system that is behaviorally based are discussed. The first characteristic examines the antecedents and consequences of the child's behavior, as opposed to predicting the function of the problem behavior based on the child's internal cognitions or personality traits. The second characteristic encompasses the notion that the treatments for the problem behavior are based on the behavior itself and not internal factors of the child. The third characteristic is that the assessment process includes gathering information about the child's environments; thus, the assessment process involves more than simply gathering information on the frequency of the behavior. This process includes the practitioner gathering information on the antecedents before the target behavior occurs and the consequences after the target behavior occurs. The last phase involves the practitioner making a diagnostic decision about the child based on his or her problem behaviors. Behaviorally–based diagnostic system involves three states. Former Mexican president Benito Juarez once said, "among individuals, as well as nations, respect for the rights of others is peace." This phrase has stuck with me for most of my life. This quote is meaningful to me, because it is about having respect towards others, their rights and property. Particularly my father always brought it to my attention whenever I got in trouble at school. • 20. The DSM-5 Diagnostic Analysis While the DSM–5 remains largely based on categorical nosology, the introduction acknowledges the need for a more dimensional approach (APA, 2013). In fact, the DSM–5 task force and work groups were instructed to consider empirically–based guidelines to improve dimensional aspects of disorder categorization such as: shared neural substrates, biomarkers, family traits, course of illness, high comorbidity, genetic risk factors, and shared treatment response. While the DSM–5 task force ultimately decided that it was scientifically premature to transition to a completely dimensional diagnostic system that would have in effect changed the requirements for most disorders, the current edition serves as a transitional guideline to new diagnostic approaches without dramatically disrupting current clinical practice/research (APA, 2013). Dimensional approaches can be observed throughout the DSM–5 through the consolidation of related disorders, Section III additions, and supplemental online materials. Consolidation of Disorders. • 25. Diagnostic And Diagnostic Classification System Essay Introduction Mental health disorders has been very strenuous and complex to understand and diagnose, many diagnosis criteria such as DSM have been used to determine the disorders and medication (Szabo, 2011). I am asserting that "Yes, Psychopathology diagnostic classification systems (such as the DSM or ICD) are of little use to health professionals and patients because behaviours are often misidentified and medicalised". To assert this, this paper is going to explore four main topics that contribute to the little use of psychopathology diagnostic classification system, these include downsides for using DSM diagnostic criteria, Medicalisation and misdiagnose, consequences of medicalisation to the health professionals and community and Psychological trauma in patients. Szabo, (2011) states that Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has been utilised to diagnose and categorize mental illness in psychiatry. However this diagnosis is focused on definitions of operational rather than the cause (Warelow & Holmes, 2011). This paper will first explore the downside of using DSM criteria to diagnose mental health. Downsides for using DSM diagnostic criteria Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder as a diagnostic method has been of little use for clients and health professionals as this method gives indications that are similar for nearly all mental health issues (Johnstone, 2008). The DSM was created to assist clinicians in diagnosing and recognizing mental illness in their clients. It has been used for over six decades and there are a total of five editions. Each edition has some updated and new information that wasn't included in the last edition. The reason for the changes in the DSM is because the mental health field is always evolving. There's new information that's discovered from research and is implemented into the next DSM. All mental health clinicians have the common goal of providing treatment to their clients in the best and most effect way possible. Homosexuality was once labeled a mental illness in the DSM, but in a later edition it was removed from the DSM. In May 2013, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) published the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM–5). This culminated 12 years of work with the stated goal of "enhancing the clinical usefulness of DSM–5 as a guide in the diagnosis of mental disorders" (APA, 2013, p. 5). There are numerous benefits to a categorical approach to psychiatric diagnoses in general and schizophrenia. Historically, psychiatry emerged as a discipline based on informal rules of categorisation of everyday experiences, developed to draw distinctions based on the healthy and the ill. This was used as attempt to introduce formal and universal diagnostic criteria guided to promote clear communication and reliability, validity and amongst clinicians whom held different view on disorders. Individuals with cystic fibrosis often get lung infections due to the thick mucus in their lungs. In order to prescribe antibiotics for these lung infections, a bacterial culture needs to be performed, which requires bacterial samples to be separated from the thick mucus of sputum. Passive filtration is the most commonly used type of filtration in cell sorting for diagnostic purposes and extorts cells physical properties (Yoon et al., 2016). Dead end filtration is a form of passive filtration where the filtrate is added perpendicularly to the filter (Yoon et al., 2016). While dead end filtration is relatively easy to perform, larger particles can block the filter, stopping the flow of filtrate through the filter. This blockage problem causes dead end filtration to be underutilized (Mugnier, Howell, & Ruf, 2000). It has been shown that a cycle of forward and backward flushes can dislodge larger particles from the filter– allowing more of the smaller particles to rush through the filter pores (Smith, Vigneswaran, Ngo, Ben–Aim, & Nguyen, 2005)– but what percentage of backward flush is most efficient in a duty cycle with a constant amount ...
