Manifest Destiny And James K. Polk
The United States started out as a real small country back in the 1700's. The country wanted to expand their land so they created something called
"Manifest Destiny". Manifest Destiny was where the United States wanted to own all land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The United
States was usually able to get the land they wanted pretty easily but Some land they wanted took time and war to claim it. James K. Polk was the
President during the end of Manifest Destiny so he was the first president to run the country when it had fully developed. The Louisiana Purchase was
the first and the biggest part of land that the United States had bought. France had owned the territory until Napoleon needed money to finance his wars.

How Did James K. Polk To Fight Mexico
At the age of 10 Polk moved with his family from his native North Carolina to middle Tennessee. It was a grueling though the doubtlessly exciting
journey of nearly 500 miles by wagon terrain. In Tennessee, they were met by Ezekiel Polk, Polk's grandfather, who had already purchased land and
settled there. The lad helped his father clear a section for their new home in the for title Duck River.
A long–time advocate of free trade, Polk signed into the law a significant reduction in the tariff rate drawn up by the Secretary of the Treasury Robert
J. Walker. To getTexas, we had to fight the Mexico in we won that is why we have Texas today. Polk at first settled for nothing less than the entire
region of Oregon. Oregon Treaty is an agreement between the United States between and the Canada. "Fifty–four Forty or fight!" Independent treasury

As the 11th president of the United States, James K. Polk was often considered the last strong president before Civil War. Despite that he is not as
well–known as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt, no one can deny that his contributions to the United States was
tremendous. During his term in the White House, the United States gained more than 800,000 square miles of territory which equals to one–third of
land the US had by that time and extended across the continent for the first time. Also, James reduced tariff in order to stimulate trade and created an
independent US treasury.
James K. Polk was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on November 2nd, 1795. He was the eldest children in Polk family. When he was 11
years old, he moved to Columbia, Tennessee with his whole family where his father operated a prosperous farm and became a businessman and
slaveholder. Right before his seventeenth birthday, he survived a major operation for stones in his urinary bladder when modern antiseptics and
anesthesia had not been invented yet. Perhaps the surgery left him not only sterile, but also encouragement. In 1816, James successfully fulfilled the
entrance requirement of University of North Carolina and became a sophomore there. In 1818, he graduated with top honors in bother mathematics and

Going To War With Mexico Justified Essay
When there is justice, there is no mercy. In 1812, Mexico was freed from its mother country, Spain. Only 12 years after, the Alamo was fought with the
Anglos and the Mexicans. The Alamo was a settlement that turned into a fort when the Mexicans tried to attack the Texans, or also called, Anglos. The
U.S. was a growing nation and it needed more land. So many Americans moved to Mexico. In 1846, Mexico welcomed the Americans and allowed the
farmers to rent or buy the land in Texas. Mexico's land stretched from Guatemala to Oregon. It was almost the size of the U.S., and most of it had no
inhabitants. The reason the War with Mexico started was because the Mexicans thought America was robbing their land. TheUnited States was justified
for going to war with Mexico because the Texans rightfully bought the land, Mexico was limiting their freedom, and that the Mexicans struck first.
Americans bought the land from the Mexican province of Texas. "A special effort was made to encourage... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Mexican government had a law that stated they had to become Catholic in order to live in Mexico, the Texans remained Protestant. They
even bought their slaves from America when slavery was forbidden. Although these are true, the Americans born people of Texas were just doing what
they believed and thought was right.
The Americans had a justified reason for going to war with Mexico because America bought the land, Mexico was limiting the Texan's freedom, and
Mexico struck first. Once Mexico sold their land to the Texans, they realized that they wanted it back, which started the war. They were oblivious to the
fact that the Americans bought it from them. The Mexican government was limiting the Texans rights, as well as starting the war. In the end, American
won the fight, as well as Texas and California, which are now the two largest states in the country. As President polk said, it was "manifest

Manifest Destiny By James K. Polk
Manifest Destiny was the widely held belief that the United States of America were destined to expand over a vast area through the will of God. The
President of the United States of America, James K. Polk, who had been elected into office in 1844. Polk won the election by showing his support of
the re–occupation of Oregon and the re–annexation of Texas. In doing so he was able to appeal to both the southern and northern expansionists. Polk
spearheaded the tasks soon after entering office. Manifest Destiny is what urged The States to expand their territory, forming the country we have
today. Many United States citizens had migrated into Texas, which was under the control of Mexico. Many also migrated from the United States and to
Oregon, which was occupied by both The United States and Britain. In 1824, Mexico put in place a law that would offer cheap land and a four year
exemption from taxes for all Americans willing to migrate to Texas. Six years later, American immigrants had outnumbered the Mexican population.
The American migrant population had become more than double of that of the Mexican population in Texas. Tensions had been raised and led to
conflict in Texas. In the Oregon Territory, both Britain and the United States had claimed sovereignty, or authority, over the Oregon Territory. Without
any actual resolution, both Britain and the United States decided to sign an 1818 treaty that would allow both factions to occupy the territory. By 1820

Essay On Disputed Territory
Disputed territory is often described as a land that has been disagreed over power and ownership typically between a new state and the previously
owning country. Disputed territory was also the main reason for the battle between Mexico and the United States to brew. United States was the first to
act and begin this war, but did the country really have good reasoning to get even with Mexico? Indeed, the United was justified in going to war with
Mexico because 16 of our American soldiers were killed, Mexico was just beginning to be a their own country and did not exert enough government
control, and Texas wanted to be part of theUnited States in the first place. In the year 1846, our soldiers were sent down to the border between newly

The soldiers were sent as protectors from Mexico. Before becoming part of the United States, Texas had new citizens already arriving in their part of
the country. These citizens were coming from the United States. Most of them were Protestants, and did not abide by the Catholic religion, which
Mexico had ordered them to. All of the previous United States citizens in Texas agreed to revolt against Mexican officials. Texas gained their
independence at the Battle of San Jacinto and was commenced a search for a new land to abide to. They had annexed to become part of the United
States, but unfortunately Congress voted against this proposal. The reason being was that, many congressmen did not want a large slave territory being
added in the Northeast. Somehow in late 1844, President James K. Polk was elected as a leader of this nation. He spread the idea of Manifest Destiny
throughout the nation. Manifest Destiny was a belief that it was God's will for this democracy to spread all the way to the Pacific ocean. Before this
president took office, Congress had reversed their whole way of thinking, and voted to annex Texas. This was where United States soldiers were sent

James K. Polk And Manifest Destiny
James K. Polk was elected as president of the United States in 1848 and with him he brought a determination to expand territory more than any other
president had before. In his one term administration he expanded the country by two–thirds. Polks hunger for more land resulted in a war with Mexico
over Texas which evoked lots of opposition from the Whig party. The idea of Manifest Destiny was germinating throughout Democrats everywhere,
countering the Whig ideology of "true republicanism". They believed "A nation cannot simultaneously devote its energies to the absorption of
others' territories and the improvement of its own," (pg, 49). Polk ignored this belief and soon John C. Fremont was declaring California
independent and Stephen Watts Kearny was leading his army to several victories south of the Rio Grande. Nicholas Trist was able to get Mexico to
sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, recognizing the Rio Grande boundary of Texas and ceding New Mexico and upper Californian to the US. Now
that this triumph of Manifest Destiny was complete, the question of expanding slavery to the newly acquired territories arose. Polk assumed there
would not be slavery there because it would simply not work in the natural conditions of the lands but southerners strongly disagreed. Northern
congressmen tried to pass a resolution known as the Wilmot Proviso to exclude slavery from the new territory, extremely infuriating southerners and
dividing the parties into a conflict of sections.

The first 15 presidents of the United States were essential in building up such a new nation, though not all contributed to it's prospering. Making
successful judgements about the Antebellum presidents' effectiveness and overall legacy in office required specific criteria. Analyzing their roles in
forming a more perfect union, their accomplishments, and economic management while in office could carve out the best president during this time.
Those who asserted peace, freedom, and unity among the nation, ultimately made significant contributions to their name or the state of the country, and

Most importantly though, what he said he would do in his campaign he accomplished when elected. He expanded the United States, reestablished the
treasury system, cut tariffs, and won the war against Mexico (Millercenter.org). Texas was annexed and joined the United States, while Oregon,
California, and New Mexico was bought from Mexico for 15 million dollars (Whitehouse.gov). Polk was motivated by manifest destiny, the belief the
United States was meant to expand across North America (Millercenter.org). These states expanded population, introduced new resources, respect for
the country, and most importantly, brought on the California gold rush of 1848 (Millercenter.org). Not only did Polk achieve what he had mapped out,

Essay On Mexican War
The Mexican and American War "The United States had emerged as a modern capitalist nation, and the spirit of nationalism in the country was strong
and growing" (Henderson 71). As tensions grew between the Unites States and Mexico, there was a thirst for war. The Unites States declared war with
Mexico, because they owned land that Americans desired, resulting in America's fulfillment of achieving their philosophy of "Manifest Destiny". The
blood boil of both countries caused a lot of bloodshed. The dispute lasted for a long two year battle which was for huge amounts of land. The
Americans were victorious and claimed new territories from the conflict. Manifest means obvious movement or expected movement. In the 1840's, this

Texans revolted against their Mexican government to seek for independence. This caused theTexas annexation and revolution. In the 1830's, Texas
fought for their independence from Mexico. This sparked the Mexican revolution. There were three main reasons why Texans wanted independence:
Mexico outlawed slavery, high taxes, and the Mexicans wanted everyone to join the Catholic Church. One of the major players in Texas was Stephen
Austin. He had 300 land grants which he gave to the Texans. After some time, Stephen Austin went all the way to Mexico to present petitions for a
greater self–governing government for Texas. Even though Stephen Austin was known as the father of Texas, the President of Mexico harshly denied
his request. Stephen Austin wanted to establish an independent area where there were no drunkards, no gamblers, no profane swearers, and no one that
was lazy would be allowed. Austin wanted people that were going to work. When Austin was petitioning for the self–governing state, he was arrested
for inciting a revolution (Faber 75). His arrest caused many little rebellions. After his return in 1835, he concluded that the only way he was able to
have his self–governing state was to start a war with Mexico. Knowing that the Texans were not obeying Mexico's laws, the Mexican President sent
Antonio LГіpez de Santa Anna to fight and stop the revolting Texans. "Santa Anna gained his earliest military experience fighting for the Spanish army

John K Polk And Western Expansion
John K Polk and Western Expansion Under James Knox Polk, the United States grew by more than a million square miles, adding territory that now
composes the states of Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, much of New Mexico, and portions of Wyoming, Montana, and
Colorado. Much of the United States is owed to the expansion planned by Former President John K Polk. His actions would lead to the annexation
of Texas and purchase of California and New Mexico from Mexico. In the mid 1840's John L. O'Sullivan editor of the United States magazine and
democratic Review used the phrase "Manifest Destiny". To him these words seemed to be an appropriate label for the spirit of expansionism that
boosted from the presidency of John K Polk and his extension of pre–civil war united states. The current president has not had to deal with this large of
land acquisition in fact he's done almost the exact opposite of this. He hasn't even taken any land from any other country. He has given land back to
many other foreign governments. In the case of giving back Guantanamo Bay to the Cuban government, which is coincidentally also a Spanish
speaking country. Another comparison that could be made is the war in Iraq. Just like the Iraq war we went in to stop Saddam Husain and in this war
we went in to get land from the Mexican government. No modern achievements by other presidents really compare to just how huge and important his
actions were in the creation of the United

Manifest Destiny Manifest Destiny is the belief during the 19th century, that the United States of America not only could, but was destined to, stretch
from coast to coast. The idea of Manifest Destiny helped to fuel the war with Mexico and the removal of Indians from the United States. The American
people and government lived by this belief. Manifest Destiny had many good results like the expansion of the American territory. It also had many
poor results like the killing of Indians who were "in the way" of the belief of Manifest Destiny. The president that followed through with the belief
of Manifest Destiny the most is that of James K. Polk. His war with Mexico and strong stand against the British about the Oregon territory solidified
Manifest Destiny. The Unites States of America and its government drilled into its citizens that they should spread the political idea of democracy for
"the common good of the people". The United States government has established democracy in foreign lands, like Guam. They have encouraged
countries to use democracy, like Mexico. There are still some countries though, that are not open to the idea of democracy, like Cuba for example.
Some countries, like Russia and China, have been open to the idea of it and are incorporating democratic ideas into their government and economy.
The biggest reason the United States spreads democracy is for economic and political gain. Money makes the

Manifest Destiny : Ideal Or Justification Essay
Manifest destiny: Ideal or Justification
The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of U.S in 1803. But it is not enough for ambitious Americans, we are not satisfied, we wanted more territory.
So western expansion did not end, it actually keep moved. Westward Expansion is a very significant part in U.S history. It operated perfectly based on
the ideology called manifest destiny. However, the creation of this theory is on purpose. It was used to push U.S territory to further west.
When the idea of manifest destiny was came up? The idea of Manifest Destiny was foreshadowed by some of the writings during the revolutionary
times, with the desire for Canada in the period between the American War for Independence and the War of 1812. It rationalized the Louisiana
Purchase and United States ' support for Texas independence and annexation. We could tried to find what period this idea came up, but to be
exactly, who, when and where, it would be difficult as looking for a needle in a haystack. What I know is this ideology is modified and became an
excuse to expand west, invaded Indians, declared war with Mexico.
What is the manifest destiny? Everyone or every group have their own definitions. According to many historians, there are three basic themes to
manifest destiny: The special virtues of the American people and their institutions; America 's mission to redeem and remake the west in the image of
agrarian America; and an irresistible destiny to accomplish this essential duty. To

The Manifest Destiny is the idea of continental expansion by the United States, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, which naturally occurred out of
a deep want and need to explore and conquer new lands and establish new borders. This idea contributed to several wars, including the US–Mexican
War.
Mexico and the United States had its share of territorial issues. With only four more days of his presidency, on March 1, 1845, President John Tyler
signed the Texas annexation bill. When the United States formally offered annexation to Texas in 1845, Mexico, protested. On December 29, 1845,
Texas was formally admitted to the Union. Mexico refused to accept the loss of Texas, as written in the Treaty of Velasco that was created after the...

President Polk received word that Mexican forces had ambushed two of General Taylor's companies along the Rio Grande. On May 11, 1846,
President Polk asked Congress to declare war on Mexico, stating the following: "After reiterated menaces, Mexico has passed the boundary of the
United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American Soil. She has proclaimed that hostilities have commenced, and
that the two nations are at war." (1) Two days later, the US Congress overwhelmingly votes in favor of PresidentJames K. Polk's request to declare war
on Mexico.
American military forces took up several major campaigns in the course of the war resulting in significant battles that occurred throughout the region.
American Brigadier General Stephen Kearney led a small force to seize Santa Fe and the New Mexico territory, and then marched west to California.
There he met up with an American force and eventually secured the completion of the Bear Flag Revolt; American settlers declared their independence
from Mexico. American General Taylor fought General Ampudia and his Mexican troops, who surrendered control of Monterey, which enabled
General Taylor to secure another essential city as he proceeded southward towards central Mexico. Former Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa
Anna returned to Mexico from exile and trained a new army of men to oppose the invaders.

Reasons To Go To War With Mexico Essay
Imagine a school yard bully terrorizing a child half his size. This bully was demanding the child's lunch money despite the fact that he already had
enough to buy a lunch. America acted like the bully and Mexico was the small child. The United States of America, fresh off the annexation of Texas
were destined to go to war with the rival nation of Mexico. However, America lacked significant reasons to go to war with Mexico. The question many
present day historians are asking is "Did the United States have enough reasons to go to war with Mexico?" The answer is no. Due to the fact that
Manifest Destiny is wrong, the Undisputed Territory is undisputed, and America had no regard for Mexican law, America was not justified in going to
war with Mexico. America was expanding. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd president of the United States, purchased a large amount of
land, the Louisiana Purchase, which added 50% of land to America's current size. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This concept is widely accepted concept that even President Polk believes it to be true. They believe that "the Anglo–Saxon foot" is already on the west

Mexican War Expansion
The Mexican War was very helpful towards U.S expansion. At the time, the U.S was pretty small. There were only 27 states before Texas joined them.
At first, the U.S was not excited about letting Texas become one with them, but after they learned that they would be able to expand westward with
Texas' land, many more people wanted Texas to be annexed into the U.S. Apparently, the belief of Manifest Destiny was stronger than any of the
doubts they had before including uneven slave states. Finally, in 1845, Texas was officially annexed into the U.S. However,Mexico refused to believe
that Texas was an independent nation, or that it had joined the U.S. They only though of Texas as a rebellious territory. They thought that by annexing

Polk strongly believe in the U.S's Manifest Destiny goal. In fact, he was the president that got Texas annexed. But, Mexico did not want to believe
that such a big part of their land had practically been stolen from them. Another issue was deciding Texas' border. Mexico believed that Texas' border
was what it had always been, the Nueces River. However, the U.S believed that the actual border of Texas' was the Rio Grande River. Almost like
adding fuel to fire, James K. Polk made the situation a whole lot worse when he sent diplomat John Slidell to offer Mexico $30 million for the
Mexican Cession. The Mexican Cession included parts of: California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. Mexican officials never did meet
up with Slidell, as they were so offended, they did not even want to discuss the matter with the U.S. On April 25,846 Mexican troops attacked

the U.S won. They then gave $15 million, half the original price, for the Mexican Cession. While the U.S benefitted greatly, Mexico suffered a great

Manifest Destiny Essay
In the 19th century the settlers in America believed they had a mandate from God to expand west, this is called the Manifest Destiny. This expansion
would involve not merely territorial aggrandizement, but the progress of liberty and individual economic opportunity as well. The Manifest Destiny
shaped America throughout the years. Three main things that revolve around the Manifest Destiny are the moon race with Russia, western expansion,
and how we found more resources and advancements in technology. Western expansion was the main topic in the Manifest Destiny, but the Manifest
Destiny was not the only thing involved with western expansion. One of the other main factors in Western expansion was the louisiana purchase. In
1803, President Thomas Jefferson purchased the territory of Louisiana from the French government for $15 million. The land that the bought stretched
from the Mississippi river to the Rocky mountains, and from Canada to New Orleans, it was also double the size of the United States. James K. Polk
was the 11th presidents of the United states of America. His name is perhaps most closely associated with Manifest Destiny, because a year before
he became the president, the Manifest destiny started the embody the governing philosophy of the Polk administration and its ardently
expansionist aims. Polk's campaigning methods is the leading cause to his victory of becoming the president of America. He campaigned on an
expansionist platform, and vowed to not agree with the British on the dispute over the Oregon Territory's northern border. After Polk took office,
the tension with Mexico over the annex of Texas continued to grow. In May 1846, Polk got his cabinet to approve of him to send a message of war
against Mexico to Congress. In May 1847, president Polk had Nicholas P. Trist, the chief clerk in the state department, to Mexico with Gen. In spite
of Polk's wish, Trist signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in early February 1848. This was the Treaty that ended the Mexican American War. Polk

The Mexican American War On America Essay
While it is the country's job to shape itself, it is man who defines what that country, in fact, represents. The Mexican–American War showed citizens
how "...the war and its unintended consequences shaped the meaning of American identity, ethics, and patriotism" . The U.S.–Mexican conflict
proposed questions that struck at the heart of American culture. "What would become of slavery?" Southerners asked themselves; while abolitionists
fought against the institution in the North, on the western front soldiers protected America from becoming divided. However, little did citizens know
that the U.S.–Mexican conflict would further separate the North's and the South's opinions on certain issues. These –the consequences of war– could
be seen in how slavery became the forefront of American problems. As great figureheads strove to claim more land for America, the unbalanced ratio
of free to slave states would suffocate American culture under the weight of its own problems. The War created a new flourishing generation of leaders
to help America settle those problems which emerged. This was partially because the Mexican–American War forced citizens to address issues that they
had been avoiding for some time now. Amidst the political scene rose a question that haunted American minds for decades: what are the consequences
to the lust for war and American actions as a whole? Many prominent figureheads during the Mexican–American War were divided on their ideas of

Why Did The United States Have Independence From Mexico
Texas gained its independence from Mexico in 1836. The United States declined to assimilate Texas into the union, due to northern views on slavery
and acquiring an additional slave state. Another reason why the United States did not want Texas was because the Mexican government warned that
any annexation attempt by the United States would lead to war. Things slowly started to change when American immigrants or Anglos who immigrated
to Texas in 1821 began to withstand Mexican power over them as well as, President Andrew Jackson offering $10,000 to purchase Texas which heavily
increased tensions between Mexico and the United States. (Modern World History, ch. 10) Things got very bad in 1831 when Mexico abolished

Santa Anna convinced James K. Polk that he would end the war if he is to be set free Mexico, an agreement in which Santa Anna violated and instead

on December 29. 1845. Not stopping there Polk also determined to purchase both California and New Mexico in 1840s, an offer in which the
Mexican leaders refused which caused the United States to declare war. The United States army under the lead of General Zachary Taylor and later
General Winfield Scott managed to invade and capture most of Mexico and secure California, Santa Fe, and Texas. (Modern World History, ch. 10)
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican–American War, and even though Guerilla attacks continued the war was completely over. The
consequences of the war included: Rio Grande to be established as the U.S. – Mexican border, formal annexation of Texas, New Mexico, and

Who Was James K. Polk A Bully?
Was James K. Polk A Bully? In the election of 1844, James K. Polk was known as the dark horse candidate who campaigned issues concerning the
annexation of texas and the settlement of disputes over Oregon boundaries. Although there were some arguments against westward expansion, Polk
zealously worked towards expanding America without minding that he was not supported by all. It can be seen that James K. Polk was justified
engaging war with Mexico through his many actions prior to the war.
Arguments against westward expansion include that expansion will increase tension between the north and south. Polk's expansionist program would
eventually lead to acquiring more land in states such as Texas, where slavery was prominent. The north felt it unfair because that would mean more
power is given to those who actually support slavery. Since he appeared to be more pro–slavery than not, Polk was very popular among southern
expansionists but was despised by antislavery forces.

The United States portion of this region would soon form the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and part of Montana. Polk and his expansionist
ambitions increased the size of the United States and supported America's political, moral, and strategic interests.
Polk would not have the same peaceful negotiations with Mexico over disputed land as he did with Great Britain. Though General Santa Anna signed
a treaty recognizing Texas' independence in 1836, both parties would dispute ownership of the land between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande
until 1848. When the United States annexed Texas and stood behind its claim over the disputed land, the Mexican government became infuriated with
America and broke off all diplomatic relations and started to prepare for war. The Mexican–American War would ultimately start over disputed land in
Texas. It would turn into so much more. Polk's final goal was to gain control of all the Mexican territories to the west of Texas. Polk continued to try
to resolve this problem peacefully through a treaty with Mexico, but they refused to hold any diplomatic talks with Polk's representatives. This forced
Polk to have his military occupy the disputed land all the way to the Rio Grande. General Taylor informed Polk that soon after arrival to the Rio

Polk's foreign policy was mainly impacted by his everlasting proclamation of expanding America's territory. Polk wanted to claim Texas as a state,
which upset Mexico. Polk did not let other countries stand in the way of his ideas. Polk's economic and domestic policies focused on lowering tariffs
in the U.S. and establishing a moderate policy that lasted nearly 15 years up until the Civil War. He reestablished the subtreasury and therefore,
restored a sense of order to the fiscal system still left in utter disorganization from the 1830's when Andrew Jackson entailed the Bank War. His policies

What Was The Cause Of The Mexican War
The Mexican War started in 1846 and began after the United States annexed the independent Republic of Texas. This provoked outrage because at the
time Mexico still considered Texas part of its northeastern province territory, although Texas declared its secession after the 1836 Texas Revolution.
Initially, the United States refused to accept Texas as part of the United States due to the rising concerns over slavery in the nation at the time. But at the
end of President John Tyler's term, he annexed the state into the U.S. and left Mexico's reaction to the descending president. President James K. Polk led
the United States into Mexico because he, like many others in the nation at the time, believed in manifest destiny, and wanted to expand the

The focus on the campaign was to annex Texas which Polk was for the idea versus Clay who opposed the idea. Clay opposing the idea led Polk to

the United States for annexation. In 1837 at the time President Martin Van Buren was against the idea of having Texas annexed because of concerns
that it would become another slave state in the United States. Another reason why he did not want to annex Texas was because he did not want to start

The South and Texans immediately wanted to annex the republic into theUnited States but the republics' pro–slavery stance would not allow it until

The Mexican American War : Causes Of The Mexican American War
Southern desire to spread slavery went a long way in causing in the Mexican American war, this desire, along with expansion and power, were the
main motivators of this fight. The South had wanted to spread its slavery empire westward into Texas through the annexation. Desire was a major
factor in the decision to fight for Texas as during this time, a large amount of support was rallied behind the deciding forces. Expansion had meant that
slavery would continue spreading westward, and these slaveholders were keen on achieving this goal. Power that came with the acquisition of Texas
and the spread of the practice of slavery further motivated pro–annexationists to fight in a war. The following combined elements: desire, expansion,
and power, drove slavery supporters so far as to go to war with Mexico in 1846. The Southerners desire for the spread of slavery played an integral
part in the orchestration of the Mexican American War. As William Henry Harrison's replacement, John Tyler caused a mess, and then urged for the
annexation of Texas. After the success of the Webster
–Ashburton treaty, he used the political momentum to led a campaign in 1843 with the help of
Duff Green, a slavery supporter, to vilify Great Britain for their attempts in abolishing slavery in Texas. Then, in 1844 he attempted to secretly get a
treaty ratified by the Senate which would've quietly annexed Texas to theUnited States. In The War in Texas, written in 1836 by Benjamin Lundy,

War Between Mexico And The United States Essay
The war between Mexico and the United States occurred 1846–1848. The conflict arose because the United states wanted to expand and buy land that

Mexico obviously was not happy with this and refused to allow the United States to purchase their land, which consisted of what is now know as the
southern parts of the United States. Even though the Mexicans had refused, president Polk was stuck in his belief of his God–given right to acquire the
whole continent, Polk went ahead and still pushed for the land that did not belong to him (History.com).

James K. Polk Essay
James K. Polk was the eleventh President, from 1845 to 1849. James K. Polk had said in his inaugural address on March 4, 1845, " The world has
nothing to fear from military ambition in our government. " He basically is saying that we as citizens and people in the world should not have any
fear in military ambition from our government. Polk's presidency reflected this statement by achieving his four main goals he set out to achieve during
his presidency. The four main goals were to cut tariffs, reestablishing an independent U.S Treasury, securing the Oregon Territory, gaining the territories
of California and New Mexico from Mexico. In ways that didn't reflect the statement was that he caused war with Mexico for three years.
James K.Polk wanted to cut tariffs, so his Secretary of Treasury name Robert J. Walker came up with a plan that reduced the previous tariff rates from
thirty–two percent to twenty–five percent, with the help of Britain's repeal on the Corn–laws. This plan also boosted the rates of trades. This plan was
called the Walker Tariff, and Polk supported this plan. He... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

presidents of the United States. By the end of his term the United States had grown by more than a million square miles, tariffs had been lowered, the

humorless, he at the same time was extremely determined, hardworking, honest, and meet matters with a degree of caution that was tempered by the
ability to make decisions when needed. He chose his cabinet with care with half coming from congress and all being spread out geographically.
Polk managed to fully utilize the experience and advice of his cabinet while keeping it under complete control. He held cabinet meetings twice a

In 1846 the Walker Tariff became law and it "moved rates downward to revenue

increased international trade, which also happens to be another one of his great accomplishments. Polk also accomplished his goal to reestablish the
U.S. Treasury by reinitiating the Independent Treasury Act put in place originally by Martin Van Buren. This "established independent treasury
deposit offices separate from private or state banks to receive all government funds" (Miller Center of Public Affairs)3. This gave the government full
control over all of their funds which reduced the risks of losing money to the other banks, and also was supposed to stop the treasury's influence over
the market. In 1845 the annexation of Texas was also completed and it became the twenty eighth state on December twenty ninth. This was soon

The Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States was destined to expand from coast to coast. It was the concept that which heavily influenced
American policy in the 1800s. Americans supported the manifest destiny because the Southerners wanted more land and Northerners believed
expansion would relieve the population. The idea was the driving force behind the rapid expansion of America into the West from the East and heavily

The nation didn't wait for Polk's inauguration to see results from his victory. A month later President Tyler wanted to deliverTexas and Polk promised
that he wanted to deliver Oregon. Westerners demanded that the new president make good on the Democrat's pledge but Polk was already close to
being at War withMexico and couldn't afford a war with Britain over U.S. claims in Canada. What Polk did was renew an offer to divide Oregon along
the forty–ninth parallel. In 1846, a war between the United States and Mexico had already broken out.
What Polk wanted was to push Mexico into negotiating with the United States, and he was willing to create a threat of war to do this. So Polk justified
the Mexican War by saying Mexico attacked American troops and invaded the United States and shed American blood upon American soil. The United
States responded to the attack on American soil, which was justified. The war didn't strengthen peace in any of the territories. Although the United
States claimed that the war was in self–defense, its motive was manifest destiny; Americans believed that it was their "destiny" to expand across the
entire North American continent. Some Americans criticized the war. They charged Polk with wanting to acquire more slave territory and that
America was the true aggressor. In which, Polk acted as if the war was his and directed it personally. He planned a short war in which

The Mexican war had many battles, while America won all battles fought, Mexico was adamant in putting up a fight against America, as they were
not willing to give up Texas to America. The Mexican war lasted longer than Polk had hoped for, it lasted well over a year. While war continued
Polk feared that Taylor could not achieve tactical skills to defeat Mexico. Polk also feared that Taylor would gain political power if he was
successful with his tactic against Mexico, and he did gain that political power that Polk feared he would have. While Polk was fearful he also went
ahead and made orders to move offensive tactics against New Mexico and California. Kearny saw that America needed help, so he helped to bring
American forces together under his command, eventually they had complete control over California. Mexico was still adamant not to be defeated
by America. Polk and General Winfield Scott decided that the war had gone on long enough. Scott advanced on the Mexicans, and while he did so
he was able to keep a low body count of his own soldiers, while he had never lost a battle before finally seizing the Mexican capital. After seizing the
Mexican capital, a New Mexican government took control and was now willing to negotiate peace with America. Polk still was wanting to annex
more of Mexico, but wanted the war to be over so, he sent Nicholas Trist to decide on a settlement.

doctrine is believed to have been the primary sources which led to the vast expansions because of its belief that the expansion was both justified and
inevitable. Unfortunately, this phenomenon caused the gristly and bloody Mexican American War which began due to the Annexation of the Republic
of Texas as they wanted to join the union. This war determined the destiny of the nation as to whether or not it would become a powerful nation. The

The Mexican War : The Causes Of The Mexican American War
When many hear of the Mexican American War, mix feelings and controversies arise.
During the start of the battle in 1846, when James K. Polk declared war against the Mexican's, the nation was divided. One part of the war and the
other half against. While slave owners saw it as " a place to extend slavery," others such as Frederick Douglas saw it as "robbingMexico of her
territory." The Mexican American War rose out of the desire of expansion and resulted in new discoveries. The cause of the war and the reasons
American became involved are two vital questions that must be addressed before examining any other issues. The birthing forth of the conflict came
through the Presidential election of James K. Polk, who promised to bring forth unity by bringing both Texas and Oregon into the union. After
Congress voted to annex Texas into the union Texas became a state. During this time President Polk began negotiation with Britain about Oregon also
becoming part of the U.S., but the British were unwilling to surrender without a compromise in which a territorial dividing line was implemented by
extending the already existing boundaries between the U.S. and Canada to the West Coast. However, the negotiation with Texas was overruled and
although Mexico could not prevent Texas from claiming dependency, the Mexicans, with absolute certainty would not allow Texas borders to reach
into the river of Rio Grande and so war was declared. "A military historian named John S.D. Eisenhower

Since 1818, The United States and Great Britain both occupied Oregon country. Throughout their negotiations, the united states wanted the boundary
division at the 49th parallel, but Britain which feared the Colombia River as a boundary rejected their offer. The American claim kept being pushed
forward until finally it rested at 54o40'. When he was a presidential candidate he accepted it but when he became president he tried to offer a deal to
Richard Pakenham, the British minister in Washington a boundary settlement the 49th parallel again. He knew that if this deal happens American
interests would be protected because The United States would have control of Puget Sound. Richard rejects the offer but that doesn't stop James. He
vowed that he was not going to change his offer and will get the compromise. He had an idea to get the compromise by sending them a termination of
joint occupancy and stated that The United States will pursue its interests in Oregon Country aggressively. He was pretty confident but there was one
downside to this. This had the possibility of a war with Britain. Eventually by the end of 1845 Britain lost all interest with Oregon as mainly they
were focused on themselves. They were busy facing the issue of starvation and little harvest in Britain. This allowed The United States to acquire
Oregon under their terms. James Polk as president didn't give up on adding

Manifest Destiny And James K. Polk

  • 1. Manifest Destiny And James K. Polk The United States started out as a real small country back in the 1700's. The country wanted to expand their land so they created something called "Manifest Destiny". Manifest Destiny was where the United States wanted to own all land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The United States was usually able to get the land they wanted pretty easily but Some land they wanted took time and war to claim it. James K. Polk was the President during the end of Manifest Destiny so he was the first president to run the country when it had fully developed. The Louisiana Purchase was the first and the biggest part of land that the United States had bought. France had owned the territory until Napoleon needed money to finance his wars. So he ... • 2. How Did James K. Polk To Fight Mexico At the age of 10 Polk moved with his family from his native North Carolina to middle Tennessee. It was a grueling though the doubtlessly exciting journey of nearly 500 miles by wagon terrain. In Tennessee, they were met by Ezekiel Polk, Polk's grandfather, who had already purchased land and settled there. The lad helped his father clear a section for their new home in the for title Duck River. A long–time advocate of free trade, Polk signed into the law a significant reduction in the tariff rate drawn up by the Secretary of the Treasury Robert J. Walker. To getTexas, we had to fight the Mexico in we won that is why we have Texas today. Polk at first settled for nothing less than the entire region of Oregon. • 3. James K. Polk Dbq As the 11th president of the United States, James K. Polk was often considered the last strong president before Civil War. Despite that he is not as well–known as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt, no one can deny that his contributions to the United States was tremendous. During his term in the White House, the United States gained more than 800,000 square miles of territory which equals to one–third of land the US had by that time and extended across the continent for the first time. Also, James reduced tariff in order to stimulate trade and created an independent US treasury. James K. Polk was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on November 2nd, 1795. He was the eldest children in Polk family. When he was 11 years old, he moved to Columbia, Tennessee with his whole family where his father operated a prosperous farm and became a businessman and slaveholder. Right before his seventeenth birthday, he survived a major operation for stones in his urinary bladder when modern antiseptics and anesthesia had not been invented yet. Perhaps the surgery left him not only sterile, but also encouragement. In 1816, James successfully fulfilled the entrance requirement of University of North Carolina and became a sophomore there. • 4. Going To War With Mexico Justified Essay When there is justice, there is no mercy. In 1812, Mexico was freed from its mother country, Spain. Only 12 years after, the Alamo was fought with the Anglos and the Mexicans. The Alamo was a settlement that turned into a fort when the Mexicans tried to attack the Texans, or also called, Anglos. The U.S. was a growing nation and it needed more land. So many Americans moved to Mexico. In 1846, Mexico welcomed the Americans and allowed the farmers to rent or buy the land in Texas. Mexico's land stretched from Guatemala to Oregon. It was almost the size of the U.S., and most of it had no inhabitants. The reason the War with Mexico started was because the Mexicans thought America was robbing their land. TheUnited States was justified for going to war with Mexico because the Texans rightfully bought the land, Mexico was limiting their freedom, and that the Mexicans struck first. Americans bought the land from the Mexican province of Texas. "A special effort was made to encourage... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the Mexican government had a law that stated they had to become Catholic in order to live in Mexico, the Texans remained Protestant. They even bought their slaves from America when slavery was forbidden. Although these are true, the Americans born people of Texas were just doing what they believed and thought was right. The Americans had a justified reason for going to war with Mexico because America bought the land, Mexico was limiting the Texan's freedom, and Mexico struck first. Once Mexico sold their land to the Texans, they realized that they wanted it back, which started the war. They were oblivious to the fact that the Americans bought it from them. The Mexican government was limiting the Texans rights, as well as starting the war. In the end, American won the fight, as well as Texas and California, which are now the two largest states in the country. As President polk said, it was "manifest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Manifest Destiny By James K. Polk Manifest Destiny was the widely held belief that the United States of America were destined to expand over a vast area through the will of God. The President of the United States of America, James K. Polk, who had been elected into office in 1844. Polk won the election by showing his support of the re–occupation of Oregon and the re–annexation of Texas. In doing so he was able to appeal to both the southern and northern expansionists. Polk spearheaded the tasks soon after entering office. Manifest Destiny is what urged The States to expand their territory, forming the country we have today. Many United States citizens had migrated into Texas, which was under the control of Mexico. Many also migrated from the United States and to Oregon, which was occupied by both The United States and Britain. In 1824, Mexico put in place a law that would offer cheap land and a four year exemption from taxes for all Americans willing to migrate to Texas. Six years later, American immigrants had outnumbered the Mexican population. The American migrant population had become more than double of that of the Mexican population in Texas. Tensions had been raised and led to conflict in Texas. In the Oregon Territory, both Britain and the United States had claimed sovereignty, or authority, over the Oregon Territory. Without any actual resolution, both Britain and the United States decided to sign an 1818 treaty that would allow both factions to occupy the territory. By 1820 American interest in ... • 6. Essay On Disputed Territory Disputed territory is often described as a land that has been disagreed over power and ownership typically between a new state and the previously owning country. Disputed territory was also the main reason for the battle between Mexico and the United States to brew. United States was the first to act and begin this war, but did the country really have good reasoning to get even with Mexico? Indeed, the United was justified in going to war with Mexico because 16 of our American soldiers were killed, Mexico was just beginning to be a their own country and did not exert enough government control, and Texas wanted to be part of theUnited States in the first place. In the year 1846, our soldiers were sent down to the border between newly added Texas and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The soldiers were sent as protectors from Mexico. Before becoming part of the United States, Texas had new citizens already arriving in their part of the country. These citizens were coming from the United States. Most of them were Protestants, and did not abide by the Catholic religion, which Mexico had ordered them to. All of the previous United States citizens in Texas agreed to revolt against Mexican officials. Texas gained their independence at the Battle of San Jacinto and was commenced a search for a new land to abide to. They had annexed to become part of the United States, but unfortunately Congress voted against this proposal. The reason being was that, many congressmen did not want a large slave territory being added in the Northeast. Somehow in late 1844, President James K. Polk was elected as a leader of this nation. He spread the idea of Manifest Destiny throughout the nation. Manifest Destiny was a belief that it was God's will for this democracy to spread all the way to the Pacific ocean. Before this president took office, Congress had reversed their whole way of thinking, and voted to annex Texas. This was where United States soldiers were sent down into disputed ... • 7. James K. Polk And Manifest Destiny James K. Polk was elected as president of the United States in 1848 and with him he brought a determination to expand territory more than any other president had before. In his one term administration he expanded the country by two–thirds. Polks hunger for more land resulted in a war with Mexico over Texas which evoked lots of opposition from the Whig party. The idea of Manifest Destiny was germinating throughout Democrats everywhere, countering the Whig ideology of "true republicanism". They believed "A nation cannot simultaneously devote its energies to the absorption of others' territories and the improvement of its own," (pg, 49). Polk ignored this belief and soon John C. Fremont was declaring California independent and Stephen Watts Kearny was leading his army to several victories south of the Rio Grande. Nicholas Trist was able to get Mexico to sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, recognizing the Rio Grande boundary of Texas and ceding New Mexico and upper Californian to the US. Now that this triumph of Manifest Destiny was complete, the question of expanding slavery to the newly acquired territories arose. Polk assumed there would not be slavery there because it would simply not work in the natural conditions of the lands but southerners strongly disagreed. Northern congressmen tried to pass a resolution known as the Wilmot Proviso to exclude slavery from the new territory, extremely infuriating southerners and dividing the parties into a conflict of sections. ... O'Sullivan had tried to encourage expansionism, the political belief of territorial expansion . Manifest Destiny took a big part of the Mexicans and Native Americans lives and history today. Many Americans had believed that the Americans were destined by god to conquer the continent through the pacific ocean. Not only by population but also the expansion of "democracy" and "freedom". Perhaps it was true for some, others not so true. The battle of veracruz was one cause by manifest density for Mexico. James K. • 9. John Quincy Adams's Legacy In Office The first 15 presidents of the United States were essential in building up such a new nation, though not all contributed to it's prospering. Making successful judgements about the Antebellum presidents' effectiveness and overall legacy in office required specific criteria. Analyzing their roles in forming a more perfect union, their accomplishments, and economic management while in office could carve out the best president during this time. Those who asserted peace, freedom, and unity among the nation, ultimately made significant contributions to their name or the state of the country, and established or motivated the economy while in office were considered successful and a valuable president that could possibly earn the title of best. He expanded the United States, reestablished the treasury system, cut tariffs, and won the war against Mexico (Millercenter.org). Texas was annexed and joined the United States, while Oregon, California, and New Mexico was bought from Mexico for 15 million dollars (Whitehouse.gov). Polk was motivated by manifest destiny, the belief the United States was meant to expand across North America (Millercenter.org). These states expanded population, introduced new resources, respect for the country, and most importantly, brought on the California gold rush of 1848 (Millercenter.org). Not only did Polk achieve what he had mapped out, but he made developments for the country and the government that are still in use today. Polk created the Smithsonian Institution that today houses an estimation of 156 million artifacts, the first postage stamp, the U.S. Naval Academy , the Federal Depository Library Program, and the U.S.Department of Interior that was put in place because he recognized the need to preserve the new land he had acquired (newsdesk.si.edu) (US–Presidents.insidegov.com). • 10. Essay On Mexican War The Mexican and American War "The United States had emerged as a modern capitalist nation, and the spirit of nationalism in the country was strong and growing" (Henderson 71). As tensions grew between the Unites States and Mexico, there was a thirst for war. The Unites States declared war with Mexico, because they owned land that Americans desired, resulting in America's fulfillment of achieving their philosophy of "Manifest Destiny". The blood boil of both countries caused a lot of bloodshed. The dispute lasted for a long two year battle which was for huge amounts of land. The Americans were victorious and claimed new territories from the conflict. Manifest means obvious movement or expected movement. In the 1840's, this philosophy... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Texans revolted against their Mexican government to seek for independence. This caused theTexas annexation and revolution. In the 1830's, Texas fought for their independence from Mexico. This sparked the Mexican revolution. There were three main reasons why Texans wanted independence: Mexico outlawed slavery, high taxes, and the Mexicans wanted everyone to join the Catholic Church. One of the major players in Texas was Stephen Austin. He had 300 land grants which he gave to the Texans. After some time, Stephen Austin went all the way to Mexico to present petitions for a greater self–governing government for Texas. Even though Stephen Austin was known as the father of Texas, the President of Mexico harshly denied his request. Stephen Austin wanted to establish an independent area where there were no drunkards, no gamblers, no profane swearers, and no one that was lazy would be allowed. Austin wanted people that were going to work. When Austin was petitioning for the self–governing state, he was arrested for inciting a revolution (Faber 75). His arrest caused many little rebellions. After his return in 1835, he concluded that the only way he was able to have his self–governing state was to start a war with Mexico. Knowing that the Texans were not obeying Mexico's laws, the Mexican President sent Antonio LГіpez de Santa Anna to fight and stop the revolting Texans. • 11. John K Polk And Western Expansion John K Polk and Western Expansion Under James Knox Polk, the United States grew by more than a million square miles, adding territory that now composes the states of Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, much of New Mexico, and portions of Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado. Much of the United States is owed to the expansion planned by Former President John K Polk. His actions would lead to the annexation of Texas and purchase of California and New Mexico from Mexico. In the mid 1840's John L. O'Sullivan editor of the United States magazine and democratic Review used the phrase "Manifest Destiny". To him these words seemed to be an appropriate label for the spirit of expansionism that boosted from the presidency of John K Polk and his extension of pre–civil war united states. The current president has not had to deal with this large of land acquisition in fact he's done almost the exact opposite of this. He hasn't even taken any land from any other country. He has given land back to many other foreign governments. In the case of giving back Guantanamo Bay to the Cuban government, which is coincidentally also a Spanish speaking country. Another comparison that could be made is the war in Iraq. Just like the Iraq war we went in to stop Saddam Husain and in this war we went in to get land from the Mexican government. • 12. Manifest Destiny By James K. Polk Jack Biernesser Mr. Schulten U.S. History 16 March 2016 Manifest Destiny Manifest Destiny is the belief during the 19th century, that the United States of America not only could, but was destined to, stretch from coast to coast. The idea of Manifest Destiny helped to fuel the war with Mexico and the removal of Indians from the United States. The American people and government lived by this belief. Manifest Destiny had many good results like the expansion of the American territory. It also had many poor results like the killing of Indians who were "in the way" of the belief of Manifest Destiny. The president that followed through with the belief of Manifest Destiny the most is that of James K. Polk. His war with Mexico and strong stand against the British about the Oregon territory solidified Manifest Destiny. The Unites States of America and its government drilled into its citizens that they should spread the political idea of democracy for "the common good of the people". The United States government has established democracy in foreign lands, like Guam. They have encouraged countries to use democracy, like Mexico. There are still some countries though, that are not open to the idea of democracy, like Cuba for example. Some countries, like Russia and China, have been open to the idea of it and are incorporating democratic ideas into their government and economy. The biggest reason the United States spreads democracy is for economic and political gain. Money makes the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Manifest Destiny : Ideal Or Justification Essay Manifest destiny: Ideal or Justification The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of U.S in 1803. But it is not enough for ambitious Americans, we are not satisfied, we wanted more territory. So western expansion did not end, it actually keep moved. Westward Expansion is a very significant part in U.S history. It operated perfectly based on the ideology called manifest destiny. However, the creation of this theory is on purpose. It was used to push U.S territory to further west. When the idea of manifest destiny was came up? The idea of Manifest Destiny was foreshadowed by some of the writings during the revolutionary times, with the desire for Canada in the period between the American War for Independence and the War of 1812. It rationalized the Louisiana Purchase and United States ' support for Texas independence and annexation. We could tried to find what period this idea came up, but to be exactly, who, when and where, it would be difficult as looking for a needle in a haystack. What I know is this ideology is modified and became an excuse to expand west, invaded Indians, declared war with Mexico. What is the manifest destiny? Everyone or every group have their own definitions. According to many historians, there are three basic themes to manifest destiny: The special virtues of the American people and their institutions; America 's mission to redeem and remake the west in the image of agrarian America; and an irresistible destiny to accomplish this essential duty. • 14. The Manifest Destiny Essay The Manifest Destiny is the idea of continental expansion by the United States, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, which naturally occurred out of a deep want and need to explore and conquer new lands and establish new borders. This idea contributed to several wars, including the US–Mexican War. Mexico and the United States had its share of territorial issues. With only four more days of his presidency, on March 1, 1845, President John Tyler signed the Texas annexation bill. When the United States formally offered annexation to Texas in 1845, Mexico, protested. On December 29, 1845, Texas was formally admitted to the Union. • 15. Reasons To Go To War With Mexico Essay Imagine a school yard bully terrorizing a child half his size. This bully was demanding the child's lunch money despite the fact that he already had enough to buy a lunch. America acted like the bully and Mexico was the small child. The United States of America, fresh off the annexation of Texas were destined to go to war with the rival nation of Mexico. However, America lacked significant reasons to go to war with Mexico. The question many present day historians are asking is "Did the United States have enough reasons to go to war with Mexico?" The answer is no. Due to the fact that Manifest Destiny is wrong, the Undisputed Territory is undisputed, and America had no regard for Mexican law, America was not justified in going to war with Mexico. • 16. Mexican War Expansion The Mexican War was very helpful towards U.S expansion. At the time, the U.S was pretty small. There were only 27 states before Texas joined them. At first, the U.S was not excited about letting Texas become one with them, but after they learned that they would be able to expand westward with Texas' land, many more people wanted Texas to be annexed into the U.S. Apparently, the belief of Manifest Destiny was stronger than any of the doubts they had before including uneven slave states. Finally, in 1845, Texas was officially annexed into the U.S. However,Mexico refused to believe that Texas was an independent nation, or that it had joined the U.S. They only though of Texas as a rebellious territory. • 17. Manifest Destiny Essay In the 19th century the settlers in America believed they had a mandate from God to expand west, this is called the Manifest Destiny. This expansion would involve not merely territorial aggrandizement, but the progress of liberty and individual economic opportunity as well. The Manifest Destiny shaped America throughout the years. Three main things that revolve around the Manifest Destiny are the moon race with Russia, western expansion, and how we found more resources and advancements in technology. Western expansion was the main topic in the Manifest Destiny, but the Manifest Destiny was not the only thing involved with western expansion. One of the other main factors in Western expansion was the louisiana purchase. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson purchased the territory of Louisiana from the French government for $15 million. The land that the bought stretched from the Mississippi river to the Rocky mountains, and from Canada to New Orleans, it was also double the size of the United States. James K. Polk was the 11th presidents of the United states of America. His name is perhaps most closely associated with Manifest Destiny, because a year before he became the president, the Manifest destiny started the embody the governing philosophy of the Polk administration and its ardently expansionist aims. Polk's campaigning methods is the leading cause to his victory of becoming the president of America. He campaigned on an expansionist platform, and vowed to not agree with the British on the dispute over the Oregon Territory's northern border. After Polk took office, the tension with Mexico over the annex of Texas continued to grow. In May 1846, Polk got his cabinet to approve of him to send a message of war against Mexico to Congress. In May 1847, president Polk had Nicholas P. Trist, the chief clerk in the state department, to Mexico with Gen. In spite of Polk's wish, Trist signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in early February 1848. This was the Treaty that ended the Mexican American War. • 18. The Mexican American War On America Essay While it is the country's job to shape itself, it is man who defines what that country, in fact, represents. The Mexican–American War showed citizens how "...the war and its unintended consequences shaped the meaning of American identity, ethics, and patriotism" . The U.S.–Mexican conflict proposed questions that struck at the heart of American culture. "What would become of slavery?" Southerners asked themselves; while abolitionists fought against the institution in the North, on the western front soldiers protected America from becoming divided. However, little did citizens know that the U.S.–Mexican conflict would further separate the North's and the South's opinions on certain issues. These –the consequences of war– could be seen in how slavery became the forefront of American problems. As great figureheads strove to claim more land for America, the unbalanced ratio of free to slave states would suffocate American culture under the weight of its own problems. The War created a new flourishing generation of leaders to help America settle those problems which emerged. This was partially because the Mexican–American War forced citizens to address issues that they had been avoiding for some time now. Amidst the political scene rose a question that haunted American minds for decades: what are the consequences to the lust for war and American actions as a whole? Many prominent figureheads during the Mexican–American War were divided on their ideas of what the nation should ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although there were some arguments against westward expansion, Polk zealously worked towards expanding America without minding that he was not supported by all. It can be seen that James K. Polk was justified engaging war with Mexico through his many actions prior to the war. Arguments against westward expansion include that expansion will increase tension between the north and south. Polk's expansionist program would eventually lead to acquiring more land in states such as Texas, where slavery was prominent. The north felt it unfair because that would mean more power is given to those who actually support slavery.
