  • 2. “DIVERSITY  IS  EITHER  A  STATE  OF  MIND  OR  A   STATISTIC” 2   Our  school  with  its  extensive  cultural  diversity  is  a  bubble;  kids’   friendships  are  formed  by  the  same  reasons  as  in  homogenous  schools   and  they  are  oblivious  to  skin  color  or  ethnicity  until  they  are  asked  to   indicate  their  background  on  test  and  college  applications.    
  • 3. WHY  DO  YOU  WANT  INTERNATIONAL  STUDENTS?   3   Decide  your  goals.  What  are  you  trying  to  create  by  actively  recruiting   international  students?  Is  it  a  means  in  difAicult  economic  times  to  Aill   coffers,  or  to  create  multi-­‐cultural,  open-­‐minded,  dynamic  communities,   or  both?  The  positive  value  of  diversity  and  more  global  representation   vs.  commitment  to  our  students  at  home  is  an  ongoing  challenge  and  the   reasons  need  to  be  transparent
  • 4.   Parents  do  not  understand  “liberal  arts,”  are  concerned  their   students  do  not  have  a  resume  chock-­‐a-­‐block  with  leadership   and  activities.  Assess  the  PQ  side  contextually.     4   FEATURES  OF  AMERICAN  HIGHER  EDUCATION  THAT  MAY  BE  BOTH   APPEALING  AND  PERPLEXING  (or)  HOW  TO  SELL  AMERICAN   COLLEGES  TO  INTERNATIONAL  STUDENTS  AND  PARENTS

CHALLENGES  –  EXPLAINING  IS  MORE  THAN  A  30-­‐SECOND   ELEVATOR  PITCH   5   Paying  for  college  is  a  large  concern  among  international  families.   Families  from  countries  where  the  government  picks  up  the  tab  for   college  do  not  come  from  a  culture  expecting  to  pay.  Even  parents   of  weak  students  inquire  about  scholarships.  Be  aware  of  students’   vulnerability
