Northern California Transportation System
Introduction
The state of California is home to notorious fault lines such as the infamous San Andreas fault. In
Northern California, there are six significant Bay Area active faults: Calaveras, Concord–Green
Valley, Greenville, Hayward, Rodgers Creek, and San Gregorio Fault [1]. After the Loma Prieta
earthquake of 1989, propagating from the Santa Cruz Mountains, caused approximately $6 Billion
dollars in damages [2]. Many infrastructure agencies altered their design and operations standards to
prepare themselves for the next major earthquake. The Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) and
The Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) have made changes so above and below ground
infrastructures are prepared to withstand potential damages from seismic ... Show more content on

The program continuously searches for different types of failure including "corrosion, third party
damage, weld vulnerability and earth movement damage" [6]( Lee et al. 3). This is to ensure the
safety of society and to have a list of the pipeline segments which require a higher level of attention
than others. In a similar fashion the Integrity Management Program has integrated the use of
software such as the geographic information system (GIS) for their Gas Transmission Earthquake
Plan and Response Procedure. GIS has the ability to map PG&E's gas line infrastructure in real time
with the likelihood of failure. With the use of GIS, a response algorithm is created that uses known
parameters such as soil, geographic, and topographic conditions. Possible scenarios are then
constructed to map potential hazards and anomalies to PG&E's pipeline

Bear Flag Revolt Essay
1.0– Explain the aims of the Bear Flag Revolt
Back in June 1846, the Mexican territory of California was about to witness the Bear Flag Revolt, a
series of events that would forever change the territory. It all started several years back, with a small
group of American citizens coming from Oregon and the east. Consequently, bringing concern to the
Mexican government. Some military excursions specially the one led by john C. Freemont, alerted
the local government and military commandants to heed the warning and pay special attention to the
"The illegal immigrants in California" as the book calls them. A group of Anglo–Americans, who
were drown to California by the lure of "Glowing reports". The first men were trappers and hunters,

He knew they were not looking to become Mexican citizens, but instead were taking land for their
own and consequently, for the United States. Similar situation had already occurred in Texas. The
settlers heard rumors that Castro was going to drive them out of California. Instead of hiding or
running away, they decided to fight and seek their independence. It was then that the Bear Flag
Revolt took form and aimed to stand their ground. It was a small group of men, but they decided to
declare independence for California. William B. Ide, was instrumental in this effort as he is the one
who riled the people to fight and not run away. Once this group had taken over the compound in
Sonoma, belonging to Colonel Mariano Vallejo's. It was here that a flag was raised to proclaim the
Republic of California. The flag had the words "California Republic" and had the image of a bear.
Castro had suffered several setbacks, his army lacked supplies, his men were not being paid and
many had deserted and had gone back to Mexico. His attempts to go to Sonoma and take back the
city failed. The Bear Flag Revolt had stood their ground and the aim of the revolt succeeded not
only, they were not driven out of California they managed to declare the California

California Water Infrastructure
Infrastructure of California's Water supply System:
. "California is home to one of the most extensive water supply systems in the nation." The state's
water supply system consist of over 1,000 reservoirs, hundreds of groundwater basins and many
local and regional water conveyance systems. It is a system that is quite remarkably engineered to
say the least (California's Water: California Water Systems)
Economically speaking, California depends on an extremely intricate network of water storage and
delivery systems to supply the state's cities, farms, businesses, and environment with sufficient
water throughout the year. California's water supply infrastructure has made it possible for the state
to grow and prosper. Its highly seasonable precipitation and the fact that annual runoff can vary from
year to year allows the state to move water when and where it is needed (California's Water:
California Water Systems). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The state loses 65% of this precipitation by way of evaporation and transpiration by trees and plant.
The 35% remaining stays in the state's system as runoff. 30% of that which is runoff flows into the
Pacific Ocean or other salty bodies of water. The rest of the runoff is utilized for agricultural
purposes, for urban and environmental purposes (California's Water: California Water Systems).
Around 3/4ths or 75% of California's annual precipitation falls north of the city Sacramento, while
more than 75% of the demand for this water lies south of the capital city. The majority of the rainfall
and snowfall occurs between October and April. These months, when precipitation is at its highest,
are considered Fall and Winter but demand for water is highest during the hottest driest months of
the year which are in the summertime, when precipitation is at its lowest (California's Water:

The Three Causes Of Fires In Northern California
Fires in California As you may or may not know, there are some wildfires in Northern California. I
found three sources on the topic, each from a different view. Fox, from the right, CBS, from the left,
and Reuters at the center. In short, what is happening is in Sonoma County and Napa County there
has been some really bad fires that are killing people and damaging lots of property. News is
supposed to be objective, telling the situation how it is. Just looking at the titles for these articles
tells you what the audience is supposed to feel. Fox gave a death count: " California wildfires kill at
least 31, deadliest week for fires in state history". CBS did too, but it is a much lower number: "At
least 13 dead as wildfires devour ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"In one radio exchange between firefighters in Napa County, crews called in downed lines and a
blown transformer around 9:15 p.m. Sunday. About 15 minutes later, crews also reported a fire in
the same area. It was unclear if that particular fire grew into a larger blaze or was contained,
according to KTVU FOX 2" (Fedschun, par 7).
The use of the firefighter's radio chatter helps give Fedschun more credibility and makes readers
intrigued to see if that was what started the fires or not.
In CBS's article, "At least 13 dead as wildfires devour wide swaths of Northern California", it
seemed very dramatic. CBS seems to appeal more to ethos in comparison to the Fox News article.
They gave more facts, more interviews, and in–depth descriptions. However, the site does not tell
the readers who the author is, so that makes them a little less credible. On the other hand, the author
does not use any logical fallacies in the article. This brings back some credibility. Not to mention,
CBS has quotes from seemingly credible sources like Vice President Mike Pence, and homeowners
affected by the fires. The short interview of Vice President Pence tells the readers what the president
is doing about the situation, and seems to ease troubled minds with facts and emotion.
"Vice President Mike Pence, who is visiting California, announced that President Trump approved a
'major disaster declaration' for the state to assist in the

Is California A Large State?
California is a large state, it contains many different cities and many different kinds of people.
Within this state there are large developed cities that have a population of over 3 million people,
such as Los Angeles, and then there are some cities that have less than 100,000 people, like
Redding. These two cities are located on the opposite sides of California, Redding is located in
Northern California and LA is located in Southern California. The larger cities are mostly located in
Southern California; therefore, they get the most representation. However, the smaller cities in
Northern California practically get no say and are "underrepresented in the state legislature and
ignored by California's urban centers", according to one the New York Daily News writer, Sarah
Goodyear. This underrepresentation has affected Northern California cities in multiple ways.
The lack of representation has resulted in the "cut off from the seats of power by geography,
alienated by the state's left–leaning politics and tendency toward regulation, enduring stubbornly
high unemployment, facing the decimation of traditional industries such as logging, and harboring
few prospects for economic growth", says Goodyear. All these problems could be resolved by one
simple, but very complex solution; separating California into two different states: The State of
California and The State of Jefferson. Separating California into two or more states would be the
most effective option in lowering taxes

Northern California Earthquakes Report
Summary
Earthquakes are environmental catastrophes which are unpreventable by human beings. While major
earthquakes are not predictable, they could be further understood through scientific analysis of
infrastructure evidence made by seismologists. The Hayward Fault in northern California poses a
great seismic hazard for a megathrust earthquake. This paper utilizes environmental evidence along
the fault line to further understand the nature of this major fault and the probability of a major
earthquake occurrence.
Introduction
Earthquakes are common environmental catastrophes which occur as a result of overwhelming
stress being released within the earth. The location of the San Francisco Bay Area is extremely
vulnerable to megathrust earthquakes

Florida Californi A Great Impact On The Most Diverse...
California has been known for it 's beautiful golden coast, stunning mountain ranges, and the always
wonderful sunny weather. The state houses the largest and second most diverse population of people
in the United States. The large diversity of the people could be contributed by the vast differing
landscapes that stretch across the state. Northern California in particular, is home to a variety of
enormous mountains, mountain ranges, beautiful lakes, and forever flowing rivers. People come
from all over to witness these breathtaking views. As for Southern California the alluring beaches,
rolling grass valleys, and various other attractions make for a significant difference to northern
California. The difference in environments has a great impact on the type of people that live in each
region. An individual 's race, ethnicity, hobbies, political views, job, etc. all can have an impact on
what area of California they live in. Some people, including myself enjoy a lot of outdoor activities
that fit well in Northern California areas such as hunting, hiking, snowboarding, etc. Meanwhile,
people that live in southern California may have much different outdoor hobbies due to the change
in climate. The contrast between north and south almost creates a split in the state. In 1941, the
proposal of a new state, named the State of Jefferson would take the very upper most part of
California and the southern most part of Oregon to create a 51st state. Today, that proposal has

California Vs Texas Culture Essay
"A multicultural society does not reject the culture of the other but is prepared to listen, to see, to
dialogue and, in the final analysis, to possibly accept the other's culture without compromising its
own" – Reuven Rivlin, Israeli politician and lawyer. What I love about Rivlin's quote is that it
directly applies to my life. I have traveled to eleven states and have lived in two: California and
Texas. Though both California and Texas are within the US, their geography, topography, weather,
state history, and culture vary significantly. California, termed the Golden State, is located in the
Western Region of the United States of America and borders the Pacific Ocean. With Oregon to the
north, Arizona and Nevada to the east, and Mexico to the south, California is the longest state in the
country. It follows 840 miles of coastline, and claims a total of 163,696 square miles as home. This
would make it the third largest state in America. California's state symbols are a nice reflection of its

The California gold rush and World War II were the most influential events in creating California's
culture. The gold rush brought out entrepreneurs, and people looking for a new start. World War II
called every state in the nation to contribute to the war. For California, this meant using its lands to
produce agriculture, and its photographic landscapes to produce inspirational film which eventually
led to the birth of Hollywood. The critical events that shaped Texas's culture are its attempted
secession from the union and its participation in World War II. Texas's independent state of mind has
brought like–minded entrepreneurs together to work toward a goal of autonomy. World War II
influenced Texans to also use their landscape. The agricultural and petroleum industries
skyrocketed, boosting Texas to be more economically sound. Thus we have today's set

Oregon County In 1819, Oregon was claimed by Russia, Spain, Great Britain, and the United States.
Later, Spain and Russia gave up their claims, which left Britain and the U.S. to agree to a "joint
occupation" of Oregon. Oregon was discovered during the Lewis and Clark expedition, but the route
that they took to Oregon was too dangerous. In 1824, Jedediah Smith found a better way called the
South Pass to get to Oregon. As a result, missionaries who made converts along the way traveled to
Oregon. In 1843, the missionary's reports had inspired about 1000 settlers to head to Oregon. During

the Mexicans, but when Polk tried to buy the areas, the Mexican officials wouldn't even meet him.
When the U.S. annexed Texas, tension escalated on both sides, since Texas and Mexico already
couldn't agree on a border. In April of 1846, Mexican soldiers fired on American troops, which led
to Congress declaring war on Mexico. A few months later, General Stephen Kearny and his troops
marched west, and occupied New Mexico without firing a single shot. Meanwhile, John C. Frémont
and a group of Americans jailed the Mexican commander of Northern California, General Mariano
Guadalupe Vallejo, and took over California. In Mexico, Zachary Taylor and his 6000 troops took
over the Mexican city of Monterrey. Then, they were met by General Santa Anna and his 20000
Mexican troops. The two sides fought for two days near a ranch called Buena Vista. Finally, the U.S.
captured northern Mexico when Santa Anna and his troops retreated south. A few months later,
General Winfield Scott, nicknamed "Old Fuss and Feathers", led his troops into Veracruz in southern
Mexico. At the castle of Chapultepec, the Americans met about 1000 Mexican soldiers and 100
young military cadets that fought bravely to defend the fortress. Six cadets who chose to die rather

Essay On California Drought
Every Drop Counts California has been in a drought for about five years. Every year we seem to
lose more and more water and it's becoming a big issue to California. Residents spend gallons of
water in a day and instead of wasting more water they should be saving it. One of the main issue is
that residents waste so much water on their lawn. They'll water their lawn for hours or just water one
specific area of the grass for a long time. Many water their lawn when their grass is already dead or
don't even have grass, so basically watering dirt. Another issue is that many will water their lawn
and then turn on their sprinklers or have sprinklers on while it's raining. Many don't care about
wasting water, but soon it's going to be a big issue and we won't have enough water to even water
our lawn. People also waste a bunch of water when they turn on the shower. They wait about 10 to
15 minutes sometimes before they actually get in and then spend about 30 mins in the shower. Many
residents will also leave their faucets running and won't fully turn them off. Residents will throw
away their water when it's still half way full, when they can just pour that water into a bush, instead
of throwing that water in the trash. Another big cause of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

don't even get charged or fine for drilling into the ground and causing the land to sink in. If farmers
cut down on the water that will become an issue because it won't be enough for their crops and it
will hurt the agriculture business. The problem is that if residents keep wasting so much water,

Underestimating us, defying rules and power in our own rightful land. Mexico should not be treated
so poorly after their gaining of independence. In 1836 Texas had gotten their independence from

Mexico was only defending their rightful lands and laws of slavery and governmental power when

California is a state of enormous diversity. From the coast to the mountains and the forests to the
deserts, California is full of a wide array of plant life. California is the third largest state in the
United States and thus has a major variation in climate resulting in the many plants found. Not only
are there many plants found here, but many of those plants cannot be found anywhere else. There
are also many nonnative plants that have become a part of the scenery in California. The best way to

Most chaparral plants grow mainly in the spring. They take advantage of the winter rains penetrating
to their roots and the long spring days. To cope for the dry soil in the summer plants these plants
usually cope by becoming dormant. During this time they are very susceptible to fire. The evergreen
nature of this plant allows it to keep its leaves and not use and energy to create new leaves. Because
of this they can be photosynthesizing within minutes of a summer rain. These plants have adapted to

Immigration
California is the most populated state in the United States. It has nine regions of which Northern
California is the main focus. It has very many people with very different ethnic, racial, religious and
national backgrounds. Notably, the population of California stands out as one of the most varied and
composite anywhere on the globe. The population has rapidly increased over the last century. By
1950, the population of California was only about 10 million people. As of 2000, the population had
increased threefold to an approximation of almost 35 million people (Reyes & Currie, 2001).

The Asians and African Americans contributed 11 percent and 7 percent respectively (Reyes &
Currie, 2001). As can be seen, the diversity of California implies that for proper analysis of the issue
of immigration to Northern California particularly, one or two ethnic groups must be looked.
Mexican ancestry, as a result, will be the primary focus of this report.
Pre–immigration of Mexicans to Northern California Up to the present time, a strong connection
exists between the Mexican and American labor markets most outstandingly the workforce market
of California. By the year 1980, an approximate percentage of 20 percent of the California's
population was from Mexico. In the first part of the twentieth century, there was a colossal exodus
of people from Mexico. It approximates that from the year 1910 to 1930, over 1.5 million Mexicans
moved to the USA with about 40 percent moving to Northern California at least temporarily. In
Mexico at around this period, there were disruptions from the military revolutions and the many
rebellions taking place. Such factors effectively, "pushed" the Mexicans. They were also "pulled" to
the United States owing to the improving and rising standards of living, mostly in the agricultural
sector (Pries, 2004). The largest proportion of the Mexican migrants was notably from the seven
central states. War and rebellion predominantly characterized the central states areas.

Striking it Rich in the Gold Country: Jackson's Miwuks
If you are driving down Hwy 49 towards the city of Jackson you can still see a tall, rusty, mining
head in the distance. It is a remnant of Jacksons gold mining past, standing over the Kennedy Mine
like an ancient guardian protecting it's lair. The mining head was once used to lower miners into the
depths of the earth as they searched for the precious metal, but now it serves as a tourist attraction
and historical landmark for the city of Jackson which prides itself on it's gold mining past. This past
is also reflected in the architecture on Main Street Jackson which is reminiscent of the storefronts of
the late 1800's with signs hanging in front of each establishment, stenciled and painted onto the
large glass windows displays. It is a city tied to it's history and built around the "gold country"
motiff. However, if you turn onto Hwy 88 and head north a few miles you will run into another
reminder of Jacksons past; the Jackson Rancheria Indian Casino and the owners, the Jackson band
of Miwuks. The Jackson Rancheria Casino is built upon the Miwuk reservation which lies in
northern Jackson and borders the city of Pine Grove. An acorn in front of two oak leaves crossed
behind it is proudly displayed as it's logo. It is reflective of another culture that existed long before

Two of the projected plans include keeping things the way they are and allowing more of the water
in Friant Dam to flow into the river to bring back the former environment that was once there as
well as improve the conditions for west–side farmers. The two plans contrast drastically with each
other but both have positive and negative consequences.
If the east side farmers have it there way they will continue to be able to produce crops and farming
on the east–side will still be a possibility. The Friant Dam has been irrigating the east side of the
valley since 1944. Over 95% of all water collected at Millerton is used to help agriculture. It waters
one million acres of farmland and because of it in the last 40 years the farming on the east side has
taken over Southern California as the states leader in citrus farming, the value of this is 2.1 billion
and it continues to grow. Although the farmers would prosper the environment would still suffer and
the salmon run of yester year would still be an impossibility. The east side farmers argue that if there
water was taken away only about a quarter of the east side could be farmed without Millerton.
Without Millerton's water the farmers would have had to continue to pump their water from
underground aquifers and if that had happened those aquifers would have gone dry 60 years ago. If

Sacramento Country Analysis

California State is on the west coast of the United States of America. According to the Census, the
state's population consists of 38,802,500 people which make up approximately 12 % of the country's
total population in 2014. Even though the state has the largest population size in the country, its
population intensity remains low due to the fact it is also the 3rd largest state of the nation. Its area
covers 158,706 square miles. The state is an incredible visiting place due to its large varieties of
attractions. The capital city of the state is Sacramento, and the state's most populous city is Los

City. Although the two cities are within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The area has mild winters and dry summers. Sacramento is considered one of the sunniest locations
on the planet for four months of the year. From June to September, The average hours of sunshine
per day of the city range from 11.6 to 14 hours. The mean of annually temperature during the last 15
years is 62.6 °F. The mean of average monthly temperature during the same period ranges from 47.2
°F in the January to the 75.7 in July °F. Snowfall is rare in the area. The most recent considerable
snowfall occurred thirty years ago. "One of the few times that snow has ever accumulated in
Sacramento was in February of 1976." says Tom Dang, a meteorologist of the National Weather
Service office in Sacramento. According to the article "Sunset climate zones: Northern California",
Tule fog appears in the area during winter and could stay for days. The city has an adorable climate,
but its population remains low when compare to some of the other major cities in the state. One of
the reasons is that the city has a flooding problem. In the past 150 years, the city has been flooded
for many times in the as a result of excessive rainfall, snowmelt, or runoff . The worst case
happened in 1862, in which the whole Sacramento Valley was inundated. During the period, the
state had to temporarily relocated its capital. The city suffered a $10,000,000 property loss, as the

California Drought In The United States
Compared to more arid areas California has it easy in supply of water. Northern
California is a very lush area the issues running through all of California relate to water delivery and
recycling. An example of an area not having enough water is Afghanistan.
There is only 13 percent of the country that has drinking water available
(www.ecorazzi.com). Compared with California the delivery of the water is no drought an issue but
it's more of not having water in general.
We as California have at least before the drought did not have awareness of the water problem. Most
average Californians probably did not know about any water issues.
So the idea of conserving was not on their mind. So water smarts were not an aspect of people pre

The people of California are the utmost importance to change. With the support of the people
California can do anything. Voting for change is a empowerment the government gives to the
people. Many people can play a key role for example California senators and representatives even
motors of cities will have the challenge of getting the people heard. Getting the people to support
change in this topic it has to be sold to the people. This is a better time then ever to get the support
of the people because of the recent drought. Most people are relatively educated or at least aware of
issues the drought brung. Knowing that the people are no more the ever ready for change. The
obstacle is selling it. The facts need to be shown of the positives a new system would show.
As a Northern Californian I have an opinion that the twin tunnels project will not solve anything. It
will short term help supply SoCal with sufficient water but at the extent of NorCal. It just moves the
problem somewhere else. So in long term it will cause more problems compared to fixing them. A
plan needs to be put together that can create a steady movement and supply of water but even a

Water Shortage in California The California drought as of March 2015 has increased severely and
has affected not just the residents of California, but also the farmers as well. My claim is to find a
reliable way to save water and have the residents of California informed about the situation and the
wastefulness of water being replenished. In this paper I want to address the issue of how much water
we are constantly wasting even though we are in an exceptionally severe drought. I believe that the
water shortage not only affects the residents but also takes a toll in the agricultural areas as well. I
want to argue the point that everyone who wastes water is held responsible and what we could do ...

half of what you regularly use. People who don't use WaterSense shower heads that save up to 2,900
gallons per day and instead use regular shower head should be warned and show the problems it
caused to our water supply. Those who over water their lawns are wasting 265 gallons of water

Doctors reported that within hours, memory and judgment loss set in. People also lose the ability to

more suicides and cases of brain failure are being reported. Three are on suicide watch with two

The Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse
The salt marsh harvest mouse is listed as an endangered species in 1970s. Its phylogeny is of the
Kingdom Animalia, the Phylum Chordata, the Class Mammalia, the Order Rodentia, the Family
Cricetidae, the Genus Reithrodontomys, and the Species raviventris. The closest living relative of
the salt marsh harvest mouse, according to genetic mapping, is the plains harvest mouse, R.
montanus, a western interior species that are found in Mexico and central US. Within the species of
R. raviventris there are the northern subspecies, R. r. halicoetes, and southern subspecies, R. r.
raviventris both of which reside in Northern California around the Bay area. The northern
subspecies can be found in the San Pablo and Suisun marshes of California, whereas the southern
variant reside in the marshes of Corte Madera, Richmond and South San Francisco Bay. Salt marsh
harvest mice heavily depend on dense coverage of the pickleweed (Salicornia virginica)––their
preferred habitat. In marshes with salt–tolerant plants, the mice escape the higher tides in winter
through the use of said vegetation and sometimes reside in the plants for a good amount of their
lives. Mice also migrate to neighboring grasslands as another way of escape during high winter
tides. The mice are presumed to sustain themselves on plant leaves, seeds and stems. In winter, they
seem to prefer fresh green grasses. As for the other three seasons, they tend to favor pickleweed and
saltgrass. The northern subspecies of the

The analysisassumes that the bank will finance the entirety of each scenario and does not account
for high interest rates (they only list interest at 9%) that the bank will likely charge for the additional
risk associated with the bigger projects. Another cost that the consultants conveniently left out of
their financial analysis is the cost of having consultants spendtime and energy on a project like this.
Depending on the amount of time involved, this cost could be somewhere in the $10,000 – $25,000
range. *Question 3: If you were McManis*, what would you do? If I were in McManis' position, I
would purchase the mobile/field press as stated in option 2. A mobile field press allows for
conservative growth in the Northern California market while allowing RJM to gain knowledge of
the juicing/storage process. It will allow the company to continue to focus on the quality of its
grapes without a massive capital expenditure. Unfortunately, a downside to this plan is the inability
to capture the vigorish which is valued by some customers. McManisis currently in a pretty good
situation from a strategy standpoint. Although overall wine consumption is dropping across the
board, label laws are making it possible for Northern California wineries to add up to 25% of total
grapes from regions outside of their own. By extension, this allows these wineries to charge a higher
price, while having a lower overall cost. McManis'

The Effects Of Groundwater On California Water Supply Essay
The almost total development of California was made possible only because of two main water
sources: surface water, or water that gathers on the ground, such as rivers and streams; and the
groundwater, which is pumped out from the ground. The area also ignites interest on producing a
small amount of desalinated water, which is still too expensive to be widely applied.
Undoubtedly, Groundwater plays a significant role in California water supply. During a normal year,
30% of the state 's water supply comes from groundwater. In times of extreme drought, groundwater
consumption can rise to 60% or more. Even though groundwater is more evenly distributed, over
half of the groundwater is unable to be extracted due to the high pumping cost. The largest
groundwater reservoirs are found in the Central Valley, with the majority of the supply existing as
runoff that seeps into the aquifer.
The Sierra Nevada snowpack feeds Central Valley river systems and is a critical source of water in
the state 's long dry season. Up to 30 percent of California 's water supply is from snowpack. Much
of California 's extensive reservoir and aqueduct system is designed to store and capture runoff from
the Central Valley watershed. The Central Valley watershed provides most of the water for Northern
and Central California, as well as a significant proportion of Southern California 's usage.
Rain refills California 's water reservoir, typically falling in California only during the winter and

Personal Narrative: My Life In Fresno County
What is California besides a state? California is different for everyone it depends on who you ask. I
have lived my whole life in Coalinga. Coalinga is where my California story began. This is where I
got my ideas of what California truly means. California isn't always going be driving on a smooth
road there are times where you have to drive on either a bumpy road or a cracked road. Coalinga has
taught me that being different is a good thing, but there are struggles along the way. That's how life

still has a huge part of my story. It was one of the factors that molded me to who I am. In retrospect,
many decisions were made to get to where I am today.
California for me means everything. I grew up in a small town called Coalinga. Coalinga has about

what most Californians' life actually is like. Plus, this city has a cute little downtown area that is
perfect for an evening out.

it's very close to the National Park so the trip will be worth it anyway.

History Of California Sheep Rancher, By Dan Macon, A...
"It 's like if you woke up one morning and lost 40 percent of the equity in your house," Dan Macon,
a Northern California sheep rancher, says. California has been in a severe drought for three years.
Macon and other farmers in the state are being forced to sell their stock and find alternative work to
pay the bills on top of taking care of their once prosperous farms. Not only is the drought affecting
the way these farmers and their families live, but it'll eventually start affecting our food system as
long as the conditions persist. It's time for the whole world to start making sacrifices in these hard
times or there will be difficult times ahead. Farmers aren't the only ones who should be making the
effort to preserve water. Laws should be put in place that control how much of these natural
resources people are allowed to use per month or per year. Resources should be conserved so time is
bought for scientists to find new solutions to the problem. A 40 percent increase is expected in water
demand over the next two decades. Not only that, but clean water isn't available to one out of five
people in the world. Also, only 1 percent of water on Earth is available for human consumption.
Solutions are evidently needed. Water isn't the only natural resource that isn't looking great. In the
last five years the world consumed 27 billion barrels of oil a year, but the oil industry only discovers
three billion a year. Only one barrel is being replaced for every 9 barrels used.

Natural Disasters Research Project Earthquake: San Francisco, California
Earthquake An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. We know that tectonic plates move
slowly towards, away from or past each other. Continents are parts of these plates which means they
move too after time. An earthquake occurs when the rocks break and move as a result stresses
caused by plate tectonics. but sometimes they get stuck at their edges due to friction. When the
edges overcome Earthquakes are the most deadly of all natural disasters. When an earthquake
strikes, it can make a difference between life and death. If you survive an earthquake it's something
you'll never forget. Most of the time it's not the quake that kills people but the building and the
things inside it that fall down. It can destroy pipelines, gas lines that can cause fire and zero

co–founder of the National Geographic Society, Gilbert Thompson while working for the U.S.
Geological Survey (USGS). Thompson's map is a sketch rather than a topographic map, but it is the
first fairly accurate representation of Mount Shasta. Thompson included the majority of the
mountain's major features and the glaciers are named on his map (A Historic Mount Shasta Sketch).
Mount Shasta is in Northern California near the Oregon border. We live 88 miles "as the crow flies"
from the summit of Mount Shasta, and our home faces the East side of the mountain. The mountain
is visible from our kitchen window, our living room, and deck. Although not visible at times due to
cloud cover or hazy conditions it is easily seen on many days. It always stops me for a moment to
look at the massive snow–covered mountain. On occasion, it is topped by lenticular clouds and
wave

Northern California Transportation System

  • 1. Northern California Transportation System Introduction The state of California is home to notorious fault lines such as the infamous San Andreas fault. In Northern California, there are six significant Bay Area active faults: Calaveras, Concord–Green Valley, Greenville, Hayward, Rodgers Creek, and San Gregorio Fault [1]. After the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, propagating from the Santa Cruz Mountains, caused approximately $6 Billion dollars in damages [2]. Many infrastructure agencies altered their design and operations standards to prepare themselves for the next major earthquake. The Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) and The Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) have made changes so above and below ground infrastructures are prepared to withstand potential damages from seismic ... The program continuously searches for different types of failure including "corrosion, third party damage, weld vulnerability and earth movement damage" [6]( Lee et al. 3). This is to ensure the safety of society and to have a list of the pipeline segments which require a higher level of attention than others. In a similar fashion the Integrity Management Program has integrated the use of software such as the geographic information system (GIS) for their Gas Transmission Earthquake Plan and Response Procedure. GIS has the ability to map PG&E's gas line infrastructure in real time with the likelihood of failure. With the use of GIS, a response algorithm is created that uses known parameters such as soil, geographic, and topographic conditions. Possible scenarios are then constructed to map potential hazards and anomalies to PG&E's pipeline ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The California Gold Rush: The First Mass Migration To... Geographically California is located in the Western Coast of North America, and is the third largest State in the United States. The largest cities are; Los Angeles which is known for Disney Land, San Diego which is known for the Sea World, San Francisco which is known for the Golden Bridge and Sacramento which is known for the largest preserved historic district of the Gold Rush and for being its capital since 1854. Although California superiority comes from its warm weather, it does have the most diverse Geography. The Central Valley which is in the center of California dominates do to the major agriculture area. "the Sacramento Valley was then a true sea of grass, grass so high a man riding into it could tie across his saddle." (Didion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Originally California was not well known. One of the first mass migrations to California was the Gold Rush. During the Gold rush many people from all around the world and within the states itself rushed to California in hopes of finding gold and making a fortune. The gold rush also allowed California to become more ethnically diverse due to the migration to California. Today California is known to be one of the most ethnically diverse state in the US. After the gold rush, transportation improvements were being made, immigration was going up and so was mining. The 49's were the first people to reach the mines, although this was not good news, the 49'rs did increase the immigration to California which led to Diversity also had an impact since people from all over the East were beginning to move West. The rising of mining began the idea of creating a bank system which became very successful. Today California's transportation, traveling, and banking industries continue to be successful. Agriculture has dominated California's territory since 1848 and is now the largest. Although immigrants have not lived in California their whole life, they have expanded their views and skills by being surrounded with multiple cultures. • 5. Bear Flag Revolt Essay 1.0– Explain the aims of the Bear Flag Revolt Back in June 1846, the Mexican territory of California was about to witness the Bear Flag Revolt, a series of events that would forever change the territory. It all started several years back, with a small group of American citizens coming from Oregon and the east. Consequently, bringing concern to the Mexican government. Some military excursions specially the one led by john C. Freemont, alerted the local government and military commandants to heed the warning and pay special attention to the "The illegal immigrants in California" as the book calls them. A group of Anglo–Americans, who were drown to California by the lure of "Glowing reports". The first men were trappers and hunters, some came ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He knew they were not looking to become Mexican citizens, but instead were taking land for their own and consequently, for the United States. Similar situation had already occurred in Texas. The settlers heard rumors that Castro was going to drive them out of California. Instead of hiding or running away, they decided to fight and seek their independence. It was then that the Bear Flag Revolt took form and aimed to stand their ground. It was a small group of men, but they decided to declare independence for California. William B. Ide, was instrumental in this effort as he is the one who riled the people to fight and not run away. Once this group had taken over the compound in Sonoma, belonging to Colonel Mariano Vallejo's. It was here that a flag was raised to proclaim the Republic of California. The flag had the words "California Republic" and had the image of a bear. Castro had suffered several setbacks, his army lacked supplies, his men were not being paid and many had deserted and had gone back to Mexico. His attempts to go to Sonoma and take back the city failed. The Bear Flag Revolt had stood their ground and the aim of the revolt succeeded not only, they were not driven out of California they managed to declare the California ... • 7. California Water Infrastructure Infrastructure of California's Water supply System: . "California is home to one of the most extensive water supply systems in the nation." The state's water supply system consist of over 1,000 reservoirs, hundreds of groundwater basins and many local and regional water conveyance systems. It is a system that is quite remarkably engineered to say the least (California's Water: California Water Systems) Economically speaking, California depends on an extremely intricate network of water storage and delivery systems to supply the state's cities, farms, businesses, and environment with sufficient water throughout the year. California's water supply infrastructure has made it possible for the state to grow and prosper. Its highly seasonable precipitation and the fact that annual runoff can vary from year to year allows the state to move water when and where it is needed (California's Water: California Water Systems). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The state loses 65% of this precipitation by way of evaporation and transpiration by trees and plant. The 35% remaining stays in the state's system as runoff. 30% of that which is runoff flows into the Pacific Ocean or other salty bodies of water. The rest of the runoff is utilized for agricultural purposes, for urban and environmental purposes (California's Water: California Water Systems). Around 3/4ths or 75% of California's annual precipitation falls north of the city Sacramento, while more than 75% of the demand for this water lies south of the capital city. The majority of the rainfall and snowfall occurs between October and April. These months, when precipitation is at its highest, are considered Fall and Winter but demand for water is highest during the hottest driest months of the year which are in the summertime, when precipitation is at its lowest (California's Water: California Water ... • 9. The Three Causes Of Fires In Northern California Fires in California As you may or may not know, there are some wildfires in Northern California. I found three sources on the topic, each from a different view. Fox, from the right, CBS, from the left, and Reuters at the center. In short, what is happening is in Sonoma County and Napa County there has been some really bad fires that are killing people and damaging lots of property. News is supposed to be objective, telling the situation how it is. Just looking at the titles for these articles tells you what the audience is supposed to feel. Fox gave a death count: " California wildfires kill at least 31, deadliest week for fires in state history". CBS did too, but it is a much lower number: "At least 13 dead as wildfires devour ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "In one radio exchange between firefighters in Napa County, crews called in downed lines and a blown transformer around 9:15 p.m. Sunday. About 15 minutes later, crews also reported a fire in the same area. It was unclear if that particular fire grew into a larger blaze or was contained, according to KTVU FOX 2" (Fedschun, par 7). The use of the firefighter's radio chatter helps give Fedschun more credibility and makes readers intrigued to see if that was what started the fires or not. In CBS's article, "At least 13 dead as wildfires devour wide swaths of Northern California", it seemed very dramatic. CBS seems to appeal more to ethos in comparison to the Fox News article. They gave more facts, more interviews, and in–depth descriptions. However, the site does not tell the readers who the author is, so that makes them a little less credible. On the other hand, the author does not use any logical fallacies in the article. This brings back some credibility. Not to mention, CBS has quotes from seemingly credible sources like Vice President Mike Pence, and homeowners affected by the fires. The short interview of Vice President Pence tells the readers what the president is doing about the situation, and seems to ease troubled minds with facts and emotion. "Vice President Mike Pence, who is visiting California, announced that President Trump approved a 'major disaster declaration' for the state to assist in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Is California A Large State? California is a large state, it contains many different cities and many different kinds of people. Within this state there are large developed cities that have a population of over 3 million people, such as Los Angeles, and then there are some cities that have less than 100,000 people, like Redding. These two cities are located on the opposite sides of California, Redding is located in Northern California and LA is located in Southern California. The larger cities are mostly located in Southern California; therefore, they get the most representation. However, the smaller cities in Northern California practically get no say and are "underrepresented in the state legislature and ignored by California's urban centers", according to one the New York Daily News writer, Sarah Goodyear. This underrepresentation has affected Northern California cities in multiple ways. The lack of representation has resulted in the "cut off from the seats of power by geography, alienated by the state's left–leaning politics and tendency toward regulation, enduring stubbornly high unemployment, facing the decimation of traditional industries such as logging, and harboring few prospects for economic growth", says Goodyear. All these problems could be resolved by one simple, but very complex solution; separating California into two different states: The State of California and The State of Jefferson. Separating California into two or more states would be the most effective option in lowering taxes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While major earthquakes are not predictable, they could be further understood through scientific analysis of infrastructure evidence made by seismologists. The Hayward Fault in northern California poses a great seismic hazard for a megathrust earthquake. This paper utilizes environmental evidence along the fault line to further understand the nature of this major fault and the probability of a major earthquake occurrence. • 15. Florida Californi A Great Impact On The Most Diverse... California has been known for it 's beautiful golden coast, stunning mountain ranges, and the always wonderful sunny weather. The state houses the largest and second most diverse population of people in the United States. The large diversity of the people could be contributed by the vast differing landscapes that stretch across the state. Northern California in particular, is home to a variety of enormous mountains, mountain ranges, beautiful lakes, and forever flowing rivers. People come from all over to witness these breathtaking views. As for Southern California the alluring beaches, rolling grass valleys, and various other attractions make for a significant difference to northern California. The difference in environments has a great impact on the type of people that live in each region. An individual 's race, ethnicity, hobbies, political views, job, etc. all can have an impact on what area of California they live in. Some people, including myself enjoy a lot of outdoor activities that fit well in Northern California areas such as hunting, hiking, snowboarding, etc. Meanwhile, people that live in southern California may have much different outdoor hobbies due to the change in climate. The contrast between north and south almost creates a split in the state. In 1941, the proposal of a new state, named the State of Jefferson would take the very upper most part of California and the southern most part of Oregon to create a 51st state. Today, that proposal has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. California Vs Texas Culture Essay "A multicultural society does not reject the culture of the other but is prepared to listen, to see, to dialogue and, in the final analysis, to possibly accept the other's culture without compromising its own" – Reuven Rivlin, Israeli politician and lawyer. What I love about Rivlin's quote is that it directly applies to my life. I have traveled to eleven states and have lived in two: California and Texas. Though both California and Texas are within the US, their geography, topography, weather, state history, and culture vary significantly. California, termed the Golden State, is located in the Western Region of the United States of America and borders the Pacific Ocean. With Oregon to the north, Arizona and Nevada to the east, and Mexico to the south, California is the longest state in the country. It follows 840 miles of coastline, and claims a total of 163,696 square miles as home. This would make it the third largest state in America. The critical events that shaped Texas's culture are its attempted secession from the union and its participation in World War II. Later, Spain and Russia gave up their claims, which left Britain and the U.S. to agree to a "joint occupation" of Oregon. Oregon was discovered during the Lewis and Clark expedition, but the route that they took to Oregon was too dangerous. In 1824, Jedediah Smith found a better way called the South Pass to get to Oregon. As a result, missionaries who made converts along the way traveled to Oregon. • 23. Essay On California Drought Every Drop Counts California has been in a drought for about five years. Every year we seem to lose more and more water and it's becoming a big issue to California. Residents spend gallons of water in a day and instead of wasting more water they should be saving it. One of the main issue is that residents waste so much water on their lawn. They'll water their lawn for hours or just water one specific area of the grass for a long time. Many water their lawn when their grass is already dead or don't even have grass, so basically watering dirt. Another issue is that many will water their lawn and then turn on their sprinklers or have sprinklers on while it's raining. Many don't care about wasting water, but soon it's going to be a big issue and we won't have enough water to even water our lawn. People also waste a bunch of water when they turn on the shower. They wait about 10 to 15 minutes sometimes before they actually get in and then spend about 30 mins in the shower. Many residents will also leave their faucets running and won't fully turn them off. Residents will throw away their water when it's still half way full, when they can just pour that water into a bush, instead of throwing that water in the trash. Another big cause of ... In 1836 Texas had gotten their independence from Mexico. Still 10 years later, America had interfered with the set border at the Nueces River (Doc B). They were also "pulled" to the United States owing to the improving and rising standards of living, mostly in the agricultural sector (Pries, 2004). • 57. The Effects Of Groundwater On California Water Supply Essay The almost total development of California was made possible only because of two main water sources: surface water, or water that gathers on the ground, such as rivers and streams; and the groundwater, which is pumped out from the ground. The area also ignites interest on producing a small amount of desalinated water, which is still too expensive to be widely applied. Undoubtedly, Groundwater plays a significant role in California water supply. During a normal year, 30% of the state 's water supply comes from groundwater. In times of extreme drought, groundwater consumption can rise to 60% or more. Even though groundwater is more evenly distributed, over half of the groundwater is unable to be extracted due to the high pumping cost. The largest groundwater reservoirs are found in the Central Valley, with the majority of the supply existing as runoff that seeps into the aquifer. The Sierra Nevada snowpack feeds Central Valley river systems and is a critical source of water in the state 's long dry season. Up to 30 percent of California 's water supply is from snowpack. Much of California 's extensive reservoir and aqueduct system is designed to store and capture runoff from the Central Valley watershed. The Central Valley watershed provides most of the water for Northern and Central California, as well as a significant proportion of Southern California 's usage. Rain refills California 's water reservoir, typically falling in California only during the winter and spring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reading the California–Nevada Climate Applications Program (CNAP) a NOAA Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (RISA) program magazine, from an unknown publisher published on August of 2014 a "drought occurs when water supplies cannot meet demands, and can happen for a variety of reasons" (2). This being said the cause of the drought today is due to the lack of precipitation and humans creating global warming, which is only making it worse, and speeding up the drought. Aside from this, there are other reasons that caused this drought one other being traced back to 2014 where the water vapor transport split into two branches and resulted in flowing either north or south of California (2) according to the (CNAP) magazine. How do I choose that "aha moment" from a life well lived? In my sixty–two years of life I have had many aesthetic experiences each adding a single facet to the human being that I am in this movement. I breathe in deep, I will myself to relax and to write about the beauty in a single deep breath. Wait, that is a too broad and too deep of a topic for this micro theme so I will narrow it down to a breath that I remember clearly. • 73. History Of California Sheep Rancher, By Dan Macon, A... "It 's like if you woke up one morning and lost 40 percent of the equity in your house," Dan Macon, a Northern California sheep rancher, says. California has been in a severe drought for three years. Macon and other farmers in the state are being forced to sell their stock and find alternative work to pay the bills on top of taking care of their once prosperous farms. Not only is the drought affecting the way these farmers and their families live, but it'll eventually start affecting our food system as long as the conditions persist. It's time for the whole world to start making sacrifices in these hard times or there will be difficult times ahead. Farmers aren't the only ones who should be making the effort to preserve water. Laws should be put in place that control how much of these natural resources people are allowed to use per month or per year. Resources should be conserved so time is bought for scientists to find new solutions to the problem. A 40 percent increase is expected in water demand over the next two decades. Not only that, but clean water isn't available to one out of five people in the world. Also, only 1 percent of water on Earth is available for human consumption. Solutions are evidently needed. Water isn't the only natural resource that isn't looking great. In the last five years the world consumed 27 billion barrels of oil a year, but the oil industry only discovers three billion a year. Only one barrel is being replaced for every 9 barrels used. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
