The Swatch's price strategy was clear, they sold their products at an affordable price everywhere in
the world (in the US: $40, in Switzerland: SFr50, in Germany: DM60, in Japan: Y7000). What is
more important that they didn't change their price in the first ten years despite their incredible
success. Their price strategy helped their positioning, and helped to communicate their brand
message: "Swatch is not just affordable, it's approachable. Buying a Swatch is an easy decision to
make, an easy decision to live with." The Swatch was unique in its advertising strategy too. They
spent 30% of the retail price on advertising which was compared to the industry average, was more
than double. Besides the high–profile advertising, they also used below–the –line activities, like
break–dancing sponsorship, celebrity endorsement, special events, or product placements (for
example the Giant Swatch in Germany). They created a Swatch Collectors Club for their most
ardent fans, who could receive a subscription to the Swatch Street Journal magazine which
contained the latest news, information about Swatch. The Swatch's distribution strategy was so
different from the other watches'. They created new approach and ways of points of purchase. For
example The Veggie Swatch line was sold in fruits and vegetable markets. They didn't sell Swatches
in jewelry displays like the others; they preferred

How The Watch Evolved From Portable Spring Powered Clocks
A watch is a small timepiece, carried or worn, that is designed to work despite the motions based on
a person 's activities. The watch evolved from portable spring–powered clocks, which first appeared
in Europe during the 1400 's. The function and use of the watch has developed greatly since its
establishment in the early 1500 's. It has evolved throughout the years with multiple purposes of
function, mechanics, production, style, and use. The practice and accuracy of time measurement has
made substantial improvements in history. More than 30,000 years ago time was first recorded by
the phases of the moon. Since then groups have used the sun, stars, flow of water, burning of
candles, sand, mechanical devices, and many other ways for their search to discover the most
accurate way in time measurement. Time is measured using a sexagesimal system, a numeral system
with sixty as its base, discovered around the third millennium BCE. This was first developed by the
ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia, used to measure time, angles, and geographical coordinates. As
other ancient civilizations adopted this method, their involvement would help contribute to the
improvements and accuracy to the modified system still in use today. Our current civilization can
calculate a single day down to the precise hour, minute, and even second. Published in 1960, the
International System of Measurements can base the unit of time, the second, as 9,192,631,770
cycles. A locksmith and clockmaker in

We live in an age that every second matters, an update happens every second and it could be a
revolutionary life changer. Every second a decision is made, a business deal is done or its meeting is
starting. We live in a world where keeping this second where it belongs, it is all about time–keeping!
As simple as checking time is today looking at the watch rounding your wrist or looking at the clock
put on the wall in front of you or simply take out your mobile from your pocket to check it, at any
time given you can update your timing to be accurate, but we are all sure this wasn't the case six

The first pendulum clocks had a width of range 100 degrees and analysts wanted to increase that
range but Huygens showed that increasing the range of pendulum swing will decrease its accuracy.
Then clockmakers realized that only pendulums with small range of swing of a few degrees are
isochronous. The Second Pendulum (The royal pendulum), its range of swing is one meter long
where each swing takes one second became widely used. The long narrow clocks built around these
pendulums were first made by William Clement in the 1680s. The increased accuracy resulted from
these type of developments caused minute hand to be added to the clock dials in the 1690s.
Observation that pendulum clocks were affected by summer that the thermal expansion and
contraction of the pendulum was changed by changing the temperature which was a large source of
error, this error was solved by George Graham when he invented the temperature–compensated
pendulum back in 1721 and the gridiron pendulum by John Harrison in 1726.Pendulum clocks

Essay on Origins of the Watch making Industry
Origins of the Watch making Industry
The production of watches was a major industry of Great Britain for hundreds of years. Watch
making originated in Europe in the early 16th century, when coiled springs were first used to power
clocks. Clocks were powered by weights originally, and therefore remained stationary.
The springs meant that clocks could be moved for the first time, and soon, German clockmakers
started to make very small clocks, which are considered as the earliest watches made. Watch making
was the most advanced line of the clock making industry, which developed when
Blacksmiths started introducing their skills with metal to clock making. Watches were being made

Prescot made rough watch movements and it is often mistaken that
Prescot made the actual watches. This means that it was just the actual working parts of the watch
that were roughly finished and assembled, the movements would then be shipped to finishers all
over the country, and overseas, where they would be taken apart again, finished and put into cases,
usually made of precious metals such as gold and silver.
The nature of the industry
Watch making was an example of what is known as a 'cottage industry'.
Cottage industries were a tradition of Lancashire, and included any type of manual work where
goods were produced at home. The goods produced by a cottage industry were often on a piecework
basis. That is when the goods are made to order when required. An order would be placed with the
producer for a certain number of items, as and when required. All those involved in the watch
making industry could earn a good wage doing this king of work properly and on time. Each
craftsman would have one specialty in particular, spring making, watch hand making and so on. The
various parts would come from each workshop and then these would be sent to an assembly
workshop, where the rough watch movement would be constructed from all of the parts. These
would then be sent to be finished (that is polished and made ready to be fitted into a case). Twenty
individual branches of watch making were open during the mid Victorian

Timex Case Anaylsis
Time as an Industry
"Takes a licking and keeps on ticking." For years this is the image that has been associated with
Timex watches – dependable, reliable, almost indestructible. Timex's (www.timex.com) advertising
was closely associated with the Timex image. The advertising campaign featured different attempts
to destroy Timex watches that failed to stop the Timex from ticking. One memorable ad showed a
Timex watch strapped to the propeller of a motor boat before being driven across the lake. The
dripping watch was proudly displayed as the second hand swept past the face of the watch.
The Company
Timex has been the industry leader since 1960. In fact, Timex's share of the Canadian and US watch
market was 50 percent by the late ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, Timex made a major change in its advertising strategy. Watch companies traditionally
focused their advertising campaigns in the spring and fall. In what industry executives called a first,
Timex began advertising continuously throughout the year. As a result, in 1993 Timex unit sales
rose about 30 percent, with more than half the increase attributed to Indiglo.
Given its success, it is not surprising that Timex continued to put almost its entire advertising budget
into campaigns for Indiglo in 1994. And the Indiglo is HOT. Timex was fortunate enough to get
some impressive testimonials from customers who rolled in along with sales. These stories provided
some fascinating material for potential ad campaigns. Consider the following:
* A man led a group of people down 34 unlit flights of stairs in the bombed World Trade Center in
New York City by the light of an Indiglo. * A Los Angeles couple lit their way to safety after an
earthquake with an Indiglo watch. * Four people clung to a capsized fishing boat overnight,
comforted by the reassuring blue beam of a Timex lndiglo.
The Indiglo technology is "making ho–hum Timex kind of hip". In fact, earlier attempts to upscale
the product line and develop more fashionable products were hampered by perceptions that the
products have got a $12.95 name on them.
Currently, Timex has 20 to 30 watch styles with

Introduction:
There have been numerous changes in the computer technology since the first computer was
invented and this is an ongoing process. During this whole time computers have shrinked
tremendously in size and now can be carried in pocket and as a wearable object. Wearable
technology provides human enhancement in personal level and offers several opportunities in
enterprise. It is essential to understand the history, evolution and other enabling technologies to
effectively adopt and improve the use of wearable technologies.
History and evolution of Wearable Technology:
The first form of wearable technologies was probably the wrist watch, which was designed to
provide a particular service to the users, was invented as early as the late 1500s. Then the portable
radio, later evolved into the Walkman which was also perpetuated because of users desire to have
access to a particular service all the time. These desires for continuous access of services have
pervaded the development of most of the wearable technologies. The development of computers has
exhibited a progression towards mobility and portability, from massive mainframe computers to
desktops to laptops, to PDA's and to wristwatch computers which were

Difference Between Apple Watch Vs Samsung
Apple Watch Vs Samsung Gear S2 – The ultimate comparison
Wearable technology has grown in impetus with the introduction of smart watches by Apple and
Samsung.
They promise great new features and high end performance which are met with stylish designs and
comfortable wearing.
Samsung, the big name in the industry is battling out for victory against the smart elegance of Apple
which only releases the most comprehensive products.
The big debate rose because of their similar launch dates and people have grown great interest on
the products. So, let us compare the two smart watches released by these techno giants and elicit a
conclusion.

As one can expect, the two smart watches are aesthetically attractive and there is no remark for
either ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whereas, the price of Gear S2 is $299, with a slight increase of price according to the versions but it
never exceeds the base price of Apple. Thus, Samsung is comfortable for the hand and the pocket as
well.
Winner: Samsung Gear S2
Loser: Apple watch
Verdict
There is not much to differentiate between the two watches and it a difficult choice to make when
one has to select from them. Apple provides great variety through multiple straps and casings;
whereas Samsung offers reliability through battery life and comfort.
In such cases, people prefer the better brand which is Apple. But this should be done when money is
not an issue and charging daily is not a problem.
Samsung Gear S2 is a serious competitor with great affordability and style which is backed up by a
great battery. Although the performance is same for the two smart watches Gear S2 is the better
choice because of many advantages it has, which are elaborated above.
However, do remember that the margin between the two smart watches is very thin and the
developers should be credited for the wonderful job they have done to bring such excellent
technology to the market.

which can run mobile applications and allows one to access several functions such as a calculator,

phone calls and to send text messages. There is a possibility that the luxury watch industry may lose
its customers to the smartwatch industry. The luxury watch has had a high brand value and have
been a symbol of prestige, riches, status and classiness. The introduction of the smartwatch by the
tech–savvy companies such as Samsung, Motorola, Apple and Google has brought about increased
competition in the watch industry.

Additionally, the battery life of a smartwatch is limited, and it has to be frequently charged. There
are inevitable technical glitches and complexities associated with a smartwatch. The Apple watch
needs to be paired up with an iPhone and it is only compatible with newer iPhone models.
Therefore, due to these reasons, the luxury watch industry does not face an imminent threat of
losing most of its customers to the smartwatch makers in the next decade. However, at the same
time, the industry also cannot ignore the risk of losing its customers who love technology. The
desire to display style with status can now be fulfilled through smart watches made by strong brands
like Apple. The luxury watch retailers have witnessed a decline in the revenue in 2015 as compared
to 2014, the same is shown through the below graph. The decline in revenue correlates with the
increase in units of smart watches sold, this was more so in the last quarter of

When Swatch emerged in 1983, it was a prime time to enter the watch industry. Existing rivalry and
the threat of new entrants were medium, allowing Swatch to thrive.
Not one of the many competitors held more than 15% of the total global market, thereby creating

ETA faced many strategic threats and opportunities, Appendix 6, when they conceived the Swatch

conclusion that competing in the low cost watch category was the most attractive opportunity.
Thomke moved forward with a vertical scope corporate strategy through a new market and new
product diversification strategy. ETA engineers created a low cost quality watch by using economies
of scope. The use of joint R&D and quartz technology combined ETA's tangible and intangible
resources to create operational relatedness. Thomke utilized strategic relatedness by using common
management capabilities through manufacturing efficiencies and financial access. These resources
allowed ETA to compete in the high and low market watch categories and attain a competitive
advantage in the low price watch niche. Thomke brought in New York advertising agent Franz
Sprecher who coined the name Swatch. Swatch's entry modes were exporting, wholly owned
subsidiaries and the joint venture model by using shops in shops in classy department stores, jewelry
stores, sports stores, and fashion boutiques.

Swatch spent approximately 30% of the retail price of its watches on advertising as its marketing
plan. This was about two times high compared with the industry average. They also were able to use
unique marketing events and advertising schemes to promote Swatch, emphasizing on below–the
line activities. It also had decentralized marketing and centralized manufacturing systems.
Additionally, the company created the Swatch collectors Club for its loyal consumers. The Swatch
street journal, a magazine that included all information about Swatch in trends, was produced. It
also chose a nontraditional retail approach, creating unexpected points of purchase. For example, it
launched the Veggie Swatch line in fruit and vegetable market. SMH pursued shop–in–shop systems
or miniboutiques so that consumers could only focus on the Swatch products, not displaying its
products with other watches.
Those strategies helped Swatch lead this market in the watch industry, selling 26 million swatches in
1992 and reversing SMH's fortunes. Despite its success, there are some concerns whether the
success of the Swatch would continue. Still, the world watch market was highly fragmented except

Rolex, the esteemed timepiece manufacturer, known globally as a statement of success, quality, and

with the vision of making quality timepieces more popular. They chose Rolex as the name because
they believed that the sound a watch made while being wound sounded like the word while also
being short enough to fit on any size watch. In 1914, Kew Observatory awarded a Rolex watch a

Rolex was the only company not to take losses, as it used this time period to further its reputation
for quality and performance. In 1926, Wilsdorf developed and patented the first truly water–resistant
watch, the Oyster. The watch was strapped to the wrist of Mercedes Gleitze as she made her
pioneering 15–hour swim across the English Channel. Rolex capitalized on the event by using it in
advertisements, and by building displays in jewelers' windows that featured a watch submerged in a
small tank of water. Eventually, Rolex brand had gained such prestige that British Royal Air Force
pilots brought them to replace the inferior watches that were normally issued. Pilots captured during
the war frequently had their wares confiscated, but when pilots wrote to the company describing
their experiences, Rolex would replace the watches at no cost. This led American servicemen
learned of Rolex while stationed in Europe, thus helping to open the lucrative U.S. market to the
company. By using these unique marketing opportunities to their advantage, Rolex raised brand
awareness and furthered its reputation as a major player in the watch market.

Timex toppled the world dominance of the Swiss by streamlining the watch making process
therefore also making the process very scaleable. The Swiss had dominated in an era where very
little competition existed. This paved the way for the Swiss and their high cost watch producers to
remain dominant as consumers really had no alternative to turn to.
Timex introduced watches using a combination of automation, precision tooling, and simpler design
then their Swiss rivals. The Timex movements also incorporated new hard alloy bearings rather than
expensive jewels used by the Swiss. All this lead to efficient and effective automation of Timex
production lines, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Swatch slashed the number of individual parts that a watch required from 91 to 51 and began
housing them in an easily mass produced plastic case. With this formula, the Swiss made a
breakthrough into the global watch industry by producing high quality, inexpensive watch in
Switzerland.
Marketing was also a key area which had to be looked at for Swatch to fully resuscitate the overall
Swiss watch industry. To do this for them, Swatch decided that to do it right, marketing should be
outsourced to specialists. Franz Sprecher, an independent consultant, helped to transition the image
of the Swiss watch from a very expensive, traditional timekeeping instrument to an inexpensive
lifestyle symbol and fashion accessory. Swatch followed this lead and also did a good job in
producing very trendy watches with very colorful designs. There was a Swatch created for every
occasion. This new approach in marketing and manufacturing sealed the deal for Swatch and was an
instant hit propelling the Swiss watch industry to the forefront of the watch manufacturing industry.
With the success of Swatch and their new alternative approach to marketing and design, media
quickly became very interested. Swatch realized that this was a perfect way to embrace free public
publicity. Swatch embraced the media. This hand–in–hand cooperation with the media resulted in

Difference Between Samsung And Apple Watch
Apple Watch Vs Samsung Gear S2 – The ultimate comparison
Wearable technology has grown in impetus with the introduction of smart watches by Apple and
Samsung. They promise great new features and high end performance which are met with stylish
designs and comfortable wearing. Samsung, the big name in the industry is battling out for victory
against the smart elegance of Apple which only releases the most comprehensive products. The big
debate rose because of their similar launch dates and people have grown great interest on the
products. So, let us compare the two smart watches released by these techno giants and elicit a
conclusion.
Design
As one can expect, the two smart watches are aesthetically attractive and there is no remark for
either of them. However, the big difference is that Gear S2 has a round casing which gives it a
conventional look, whereas the Apple watch has a rectangular outlook. Samsung has three versions
(general, 3G and Classic) of the S2 and all of them are made of stainless steel. For the regular
version of the watch plastic bands are available and for the classic version leather bands are
provided. Black, silver and dark gray colours are released in the market and black colour is limited

The presence of pedometer, sedentary reminder and heart rate monitor ensures that the user's overall
health is taken care of without any drawbacks. The Gear S2 also has the same features in possession.
The big drawback for Apple is that it does not come with an option to control the Smartphone
remotely with which the wearable is associated to. Samsung impresses in this section as it comes
with a sublime rotating bezel allowing users to gain access to settings and features with ease.
Interestingly, the rotating bezel accepts both horizontal and vertical scrolling which is not seen in

As a result, Malaysian will have more exposure to its product. The demand for its luxury timepiece
will increase as it is very appealing to the higher income group in Malaysia. There is a higher
chances of them buying it because it is the first solar functioned and GPS watch. The increase of
demand in Seiko's timepiece will diminish the sales of existing watch retailers. On the other hand,
the increased demand for Seiko watches may not be a threat to the local watch industry owing to the
fact that Astron watches cost an arm and a leg. Astron watches are priced between USD 1,825 to
USD 3,300, which will be RM 7300 to RM 13,250 after converting into Malaysia Ringgit. With
such high prices, not many can afford to purchase a Astron watch. As a results, Malaysian may
prefer cheaper watch brand such as Casio, Swatch or other average priced watches. Thus, watch
industry should be aware of the changes in their surrounding because it signifies an alternative in
either making a profit or losing it.

The Latest And Greatest Unique Technologies Essay
Apple has finally announced the new Apple Watch at the Apple Live Event back on September 9th
this year and it 's due to be released in early 2015. There has been much speculation as to the design,
functionality and even the name. It was previously referred to as the iWatch and even iOS Watch by
some. This device is the company 's first developed technology that is fully wearable.
People today set many new trends when it comes to technology. The emergence of smartphones is
also the product of continuing innovations throughout the years. Nowadays, all major smartphone
manufacturers invest heavily into extensive research and development projects. The goal is to create
the latest and greatest unique technologies. Apples latest attempt at this alongside the iPhone 6 and
iPhone 6 Plus has taken the form of a wearable wristwatch.
The concept of a smart watch is nothing new. An early example of the smart watch was a product
called the Pebble Watch which was released back in 2013. The Pebble Watch allowed users to
receive notifications, view emails, check the weather and display a wide variety of custom
information. Just like the Apple Watch, the Pebble Watch needed to be connected to your
smartphone to benefit from most features. So now lets take a look at the Apple Watch in more detail
and evaluate if it really will be a game changer or simply just another gimmick.

The Apple watch at first glance looks much like your typical wristwatch but with many innovative

Changing Structure of Watch Industry
SWISS WATCH MARKET
In 1970s the Swiss industry produced around 75 million units per year as compared to 25 million
units in 1940s.
Since 1966, when the Swiss Government's restriction on sale and acquisition of watch companies
lapsed, the industry experienced a crescendo of mergers, bringing down the number of firms to
around 1000.
In 1971, 'ASUAG', the "super–trust" combined the assembling firms selling seven different brands
into the General Watch Holding Company. This move forged important new financial and
managerial links between the component manufacturing and assembling sectors of the watch
industry.
By 1971 almost three–quarters of all Swiss watch exports were accounted for by eight watch–
making groups.
But the industry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
manufacturing industry. In fact, only two U.S. watch companies, Bulova and Timex, were involved
in any domestic watch production.
Since the beginning, U.S. companies have struggled to cope with the labour requirements of
watchmaking.
Some U.S. watch sellers never tried; from the start imported finished watches or movements and
simply put them in watch cases here. Other firms tackled the problem by locating at least part of
their production overseas. Bulova and Gruen, for example, established their own manufacturing
plants in Switzerland in the early years of the 1980s.
After the Second World, jeweled–lever watches dominated the U.S. market.
Then during the 1950s and early 1960s the situation changed drastically. Timex first stormed the
low–price end of the watch market and later moved up into the middle price range. At the same time
marginal Swiss producers flooded the U.S. market with inexpensive pin–lever and jeweled–lever
watches making price competition all the more severe.
In 1960s the Japanese began to carve out their piece of the U.S. market. On top of this, the mass–
merchandising revolution of the 1950s threw the traditional watch distribution system, sales through
jewelers and fine department stores, into chaos. To survive in a market dominated by price
competition, one after another U.S. watch company gave up on domestic watch manufacturing until,
by 1970 there were only two survivors Bulova and Timex.
Throughout the 1960s and into

Fossil Study
1. What are the major competitors of Fossil's Inc?
A. The major competitors of Fossil are Swatch and Guess? To be precise Swatch and Guess are well
known brands in Watch industries. It was very difficult for Fossil to reach to that level. Now if we
talk about the market share Fossil and Guess? Managed to be on the same level moving Swatch to
number three. Fossil did had some other competitors like Gucci, Anne Klein II etc but they could
not come as up as Guess and Swatch.
If we talk about Swatch it was been developed in Switzerland in early 1970's. At the same time there
was Casio and other competitors' example Hong Kong producers in the moderately priced segment
which was making things difficult for Swatch leading it to complete ... Show more content on

If they succeed to do so they would be the major shareholder in this corporation. The distribution
center in Europe would sell throughout Europe, except two places Italy and Portugal, where an
existing distributor would play its role.
 South America: – Same issue was expanding business in South America. Things were much
difficult here as some of the fastest growing consumer markets already had their imprints in this
area. Finally they decided to enter into South America market with some new designs than to the
existing ones. In the early phase, sales were very low, but once they recruit the right distributor and
retailer, Sales could be more aggressive in that area.
Product Development: – Only producing millions of watches would not expand their business. This
made them feel to produce something different and hence they came up with an idea of producing
leather goods for men. Getting into leather products was again not so easy as competition was really
tough.
4. What are the future growth prospects for Fossil's Inc?
A. The future growth prospects for Fossil are many though competition is really tough. If they
manage to succeed as they have done it in the Watch producing market they can expand their
business easily. As competition was already very high in the watch producing market hence they
need to maintain their quality and their brand by which they can think of expanding in the same
sector and then expanding

Essay On Omega Watches
Omega Watches have a century long history and reputation of being the best luxury watch maker in
the world, appearing everywhere from the wrist of Neil Armstrong during the moon landing to the

expensive Omega watch currently available from Ethos is the Omega De Ville, with the most
expensive in the collection selling at rs 76, 04, 300 for a men's watch, although ladies watches are
available as well. Why do Omega Watches price so high? Why does the Omega brand carry so much
respect as a mark of quality? Here are some facts which explain why:
1. First co–axil escapement watch
In 1997, the De Ville range became the first commercially available watches in the world to use co–
axil escapement, a revolutionary piece of technology invented by English watchmaker George
Daniels which has become an essential component of all of Omega's best watches and has become
almost synonymous with the brand. This single piece of technology significantly decreases the

The Life Of Britney Spears
I 've been watching, along with the rest of the world, a very sad unraveling of a human life. The
recent events in the life of Britney Spears may not be anything new in the world of celebrity, but it
certainly has been one of the most "put on public display" breakdowns in recent entertainment
history. I was talking to my children last night about how truly sad the whole situation is, and how
more people need to comprehend that even if they were never a fan of Britney or her music, they
still need to realize that this is a person who is struggling and definitely in need of help. I have read
countless statements by people who have gone as far as to say that she should just "give up and die
already.....I 'm tired of hearing about it." That is one of the more appalling statements I 've seen. I
will go on record as saying I have not ever been a fan of her music, or thought she has made the best
choices in her personal life perhaps (at least in how these things were portrayed in public), but in no
way would I wish what she is going through on any human being. As someone who interviews
musicians all the time, and now 1 celeb as well, it is more than ever clear to me that they are regular
people like the rest of us. Would we expect to be treated that way if we were struggling? Does being
in the public eye mean they put themselves out there for public ridicule and should just deal with it?

Why A Business Market Is It 's Name Value Or Their Customers?
What is more important to companies is it their name value or their customers? This question is
what is going to be answered and all your curiosity will be exchanged to support to one of the two
sides. This week 's reading consisted of two articles that have different views, but at the same time
are written in two different centuries so it is understandable that their views are completely
different, a lot of things change in the world of business. I will summarize both articles and then
inform you on their main view and then answer the question myself on where a business market
stands.
I will start with summarizing the first article, this author of this article is named Levitt.T. and it is
called "Marketing Myopia". He starts with his main claim early in the article and this claim would
be that for a company to grow then the company indeed depends on its customers. If a company is
not growing then it is simply due to false management and the manager is at fault. Growth of a
company also comes with two other factors that are not particularly as big as customers, those two
factors are from population and competition. Due to the correlation that competition has with
population they both go hand–in–hand. It also states that companies believe that customers / society
is a dependent variable in which this is false because they argue that customers are independent
variables and that the market follows the customers wants and needs and not vice–versa. This view

However, these agreements stated that ETA only provided aid if it had a role in product planning

THE GLOBAL WATCH INDUSTRY
To understand the global watch industry three key variables were considered : watch technology,
watch priœ and the watch 's country of origin.
Watch Movement Technology
Watch design underwent a revolutionary change in the early 1970s when traditional mechanical
movement technology was replaced with electronics. A mechanical watch 's energy source came
from a tightened mainspring which was wound by the user. As the spring unwound it drove a series
of gears to which the watch hands were attached, the hands moved around the analog (or numerical)
face of the watch to indicate the time. Highly skilled workers were required to produœ and assemble
the movements in accurate mechanical watches and the Swiss were world renowned in this area.
The first electronic watch was built by a Swiss engineer, Max Hetzel, in 1954, but it was U.S. And
Japanese companies that first comercialized

How Technology Is The New Reality All Around The World
Future of IoT
IoT is quickly becoming the new reality all around the world. The creation of IoT devices are
expected to triple in the next few years (Rossolillo 2016). The IoT appliances include everything
from autonomous cars to smart tattoos. As the gadgets change the technology and platforms used
disseminate the information will also change and become more refined through Narrowband IoT.
The future of the internet of things is expected to bring significant improvement to individual lives,
corporations, and the global gross domestic product (GDP).
Trajectory of the internet Things
Since the beginning of time humans have created and made innovative products that push the
boundaries of evolution and are at the edge of technology. As a society we have paraded around
many of the technologies to improve our lives as well as our family's lives. Despite this the problem
that many companies are having today in selling their products is the consumer is asking: Why do I
need this? Companies that carry luxury and expensive products are now looking to take luxury
products and make them everyday products (Klein 2016).
Apple watch is a prime example of an IoT product and spin–off product not faring the best in the
industry. When the Apple watch first arrived on the market it left several people fascinated, but it
also left a considerable amount of people asking why they need a smart watch when they already

There are companies that base their segmentation on specific countries, or regions, however, the

Swatch concentrates on life–cycle and age segments. They believe that model and design,

Swatch has "Creart by Swatch" line, which is designed by artists, especially street painters for

Case Purpose A New Brand Positioning Strategy Of Omega
1. Propose a new brand positioning strategy for Omega. How does this new strategy take into
account the brand's current PODs & POPs and existing customer brand knowledge? (25 points).
With regards to brand growth, the company absolutely needs to make strategic decisions to ensure
that Omega becomes the world's largest luxury watch. This would require substantial strategic
decisions to be made especially related to the Omega's product families and its associated
communication strategies. The following are the recommendations or the new branding strategies:
I. One of the primary change in strategies would require pruning Omega's product lines to make it
more coherent and to eliminate any potential intra–firm competition. Typically, the lower end
models need to be pruned so that it could be positioned as a more effective Luxurious Brand to
compete directly against other Luxury Brand watches. The prevention of any overlapping with sub–
brands will ensure that there is no potential risk to the dilution of brand image as well as reduce the
risk of cannibalization of the current product lines. This will also help in uplifting the overall brand
image of the Omega brand by withdrawing a number of Omega's low–priced models thereby
boosting the band profitability which will ensure that there is enough opportunity for the
improvement on brand margins – a key factor in reducing the price differences with Rolex. Another
underlying argument is that this process will enable the exclusivity

Seiko Go Upmarket
* Executive Summary Seiko Watch Corporation and its predecessor had always been innovative in
watch technology development and brought many industry firsts to the watch market, and Seiko was
very successful before the 1990s. With competitive environment change started in the 1990s, Seiko

Seiko did a nice job in this era. It occupied majority of Japanese domestic market share and caught
Swiss rivals up in terms of production facility and product accuracy. The second phase – from the
late 1950s / early 1960s through the 1970s and 1980s, technological revolution, mainly application
of electronics and quartz technologies, reshaped the horological industry. Every watch shared
certain common elements: a movement to measure the passage of time, any energy source, a
display, a case, and a bracelet or strap. Electronics altered the stereotype of energy source and
display, while more significantly, quartz timekeeping technology broke the tradition of mechanical
movement to bring much more accuracy to watch benefiting from its properties of a quartz crystal
oscillating at precise frequencies. Comparing to mechanical components, electronics and quartz
components could be produced and assembled at more stable, economic, and fashionable way,
Watches then could be offered to customers with unprecedented accuracy, lower cost, and fashion
statement. To embrace the change or be changed, all players of the industry went through an era of
uncertainty and

The Swatch's price strategy was clear, they sold their products at an affordable price everywhere in the world (in the US: $40, in Switzerland: SFr50, in Germany: DM60, in Japan: Y7000). What is more important that they didn't change their price in the first ten years despite their incredible success. Their price strategy helped their positioning, and helped to communicate their brand message: "Swatch is not just affordable, it's approachable. Buying a Swatch is an easy decision to make, an easy decision to live with." The Swatch was unique in its advertising strategy too. They spent 30% of the retail price on advertising which was compared to the industry average, was more than double. Besides the high–profile advertising, they also used below–the –line activities, like break–dancing sponsorship, celebrity endorsement, special events, or product placements (for example the Giant Swatch in Germany). They created a Swatch Collectors Club for their most ardent fans, who could receive a subscription to the Swatch Street Journal magazine which contained the latest news, information about Swatch. The Swatch's distribution strategy was so different from the other watches'. They created new approach and ways of points of purchase. For example The Veggie Swatch line was sold in fruits and vegetable markets. They didn't sell Swatches in jewelry displays like the others; they preferred ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. How The Watch Evolved From Portable Spring Powered Clocks A watch is a small timepiece, carried or worn, that is designed to work despite the motions based on a person 's activities. The watch evolved from portable spring–powered clocks, which first appeared in Europe during the 1400 's. The function and use of the watch has developed greatly since its establishment in the early 1500 's. It has evolved throughout the years with multiple purposes of function, mechanics, production, style, and use. The practice and accuracy of time measurement has made substantial improvements in history. More than 30,000 years ago time was first recorded by the phases of the moon. Since then groups have used the sun, stars, flow of water, burning of candles, sand, mechanical devices, and many other ways for their search to discover the most accurate way in time measurement. Time is measured using a sexagesimal system, a numeral system with sixty as its base, discovered around the third millennium BCE. This was first developed by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia, used to measure time, angles, and geographical coordinates. As other ancient civilizations adopted this method, their involvement would help contribute to the improvements and accuracy to the modified system still in use today. Our current civilization can calculate a single day down to the precise hour, minute, and even second. Published in 1960, the International System of Measurements can base the unit of time, the second, as 9,192,631,770 cycles. A locksmith and clockmaker in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Every second a decision is made, a business deal is done or its meeting is starting. We live in a world where keeping this second where it belongs, it is all about time–keeping! As simple as checking time is today looking at the watch rounding your wrist or looking at the clock put on the wall in front of you or simply take out your mobile from your pocket to check it, at any time given you can update your timing to be accurate, but we are all sure this wasn't the case six thousand years ago. It all started as water containers filled with water as the shape of an open cone. When water is emptied it means that 12 hours has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first pendulum clocks had a width of range 100 degrees and analysts wanted to increase that range but Huygens showed that increasing the range of pendulum swing will decrease its accuracy. Then clockmakers realized that only pendulums with small range of swing of a few degrees are isochronous. The Second Pendulum (The royal pendulum), its range of swing is one meter long where each swing takes one second became widely used. The long narrow clocks built around these pendulums were first made by William Clement in the 1680s. The increased accuracy resulted from these type of developments caused minute hand to be added to the clock dials in the 1690s. Observation that pendulum clocks were affected by summer that the thermal expansion and contraction of the pendulum was changed by changing the temperature which was a large source of error, this error was solved by George Graham when he invented the temperature–compensated pendulum back in 1721 and the gridiron pendulum by John Harrison in 1726.Pendulum clocks remained the world standard for timekeeping accuracy for over 200 ... • 4. Essay on Origins of the Watch making Industry Origins of the Watch making Industry The production of watches was a major industry of Great Britain for hundreds of years. Watch making originated in Europe in the early 16th century, when coiled springs were first used to power clocks. Clocks were powered by weights originally, and therefore remained stationary. The springs meant that clocks could be moved for the first time, and soon, German clockmakers started to make very small clocks, which are considered as the earliest watches made. Watch making was the most advanced line of the clock making industry, which developed when Blacksmiths started introducing their skills with metal to clock making. Watches were being made in Great Britain from around the middle of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prescot made rough watch movements and it is often mistaken that Prescot made the actual watches. This means that it was just the actual working parts of the watch that were roughly finished and assembled, the movements would then be shipped to finishers all over the country, and overseas, where they would be taken apart again, finished and put into cases, usually made of precious metals such as gold and silver. The nature of the industry Watch making was an example of what is known as a 'cottage industry'. Cottage industries were a tradition of Lancashire, and included any type of manual work where goods were produced at home. The goods produced by a cottage industry were often on a piecework basis. That is when the goods are made to order when required. An order would be placed with the producer for a certain number of items, as and when required. All those involved in the watch making industry could earn a good wage doing this king of work properly and on time. Each craftsman would have one specialty in particular, spring making, watch hand making and so on. The various parts would come from each workshop and then these would be sent to an assembly workshop, where the rough watch movement would be constructed from all of the parts. These would then be sent to be finished (that is polished and made ready to be fitted into a case). Twenty individual branches of watch making were open during the mid Victorian ... For years this is the image that has been associated with Timex watches – dependable, reliable, almost indestructible. Timex's (www.timex.com) advertising was closely associated with the Timex image. The advertising campaign featured different attempts to destroy Timex watches that failed to stop the Timex from ticking. One memorable ad showed a Timex watch strapped to the propeller of a motor boat before being driven across the lake. The dripping watch was proudly displayed as the second hand swept past the face of the watch. The Company Timex has been the industry leader since 1960. Watch companies traditionally focused their advertising campaigns in the spring and fall. In what industry executives called a first, Timex began advertising continuously throughout the year. As a result, in 1993 Timex unit sales rose about 30 percent, with more than half the increase attributed to Indiglo. Given its success, it is not surprising that Timex continued to put almost its entire advertising budget into campaigns for Indiglo in 1994. And the Indiglo is HOT. Timex was fortunate enough to get some impressive testimonials from customers who rolled in along with sales. These stories provided some fascinating material for potential ad campaigns. Consider the following: * A man led a group of people down 34 unlit flights of stairs in the bombed World Trade Center in New York City by the light of an Indiglo. * A Los Angeles couple lit their way to safety after an earthquake with an Indiglo watch. * Four people clung to a capsized fishing boat overnight, comforted by the reassuring blue beam of a Timex lndiglo. The Indiglo technology is "making ho–hum Timex kind of hip". In fact, earlier attempts to upscale the product line and develop more fashionable products were hampered by perceptions that the products have got a $12.95 name on them. Currently, Timex has 20 to 30 watch styles with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the beginning, U.S. companies have struggled to cope with the labour requirements of watchmaking. Some U.S. watch sellers never tried; from the start imported finished watches or movements and simply put them in watch cases here. Other firms tackled the problem by locating at least part of their production overseas. Bulova and Gruen, for example, established their own manufacturing plants in Switzerland in the early years of the 1980s. After the Second World, jeweled–lever watches dominated the U.S. market. Then during the 1950s and early 1960s the situation changed drastically. Timex first stormed the low–price end of the watch market and later moved up into the middle price range. At the same time marginal Swiss producers flooded the U.S. market with inexpensive pin–lever and jeweled–lever watches making price competition all the more severe. In 1960s the Japanese began to carve out their piece of the U.S. market. On top of this, the mass– merchandising revolution of the 1950s threw the traditional watch distribution system, sales through jewelers and fine department stores, into chaos. I will go on record as saying I have not ever been a fan of her music, or thought she has made the best choices in her personal life perhaps (at least in how these things were portrayed in public), but in no way would I wish what she is going through on any human being. As someone who interviews musicians all the time, and now 1 celeb as well, it is more than ever clear to me that they are regular people like the rest of us. Would we expect to be treated that way if we were struggling? Does being in the public eye mean they put themselves out there for public ridicule and should just deal with it? I chose to watch "Titanic, because I wanted to know what the movie was really about, maybe I might like the movie. Actually watching the movie gives you another perspective than just knowing what the setting and theme is about. Many people looked at me like I was crazy, when I said "I had never watched "Titanic", and wanted to finally watch it, and see if I actually would like, so I gave it a chance. My one regret is coming into the movie hating it and not wanting to enjoy it. I thought that the movie was going to be the worst three hours of my life, I will never make that mistake coming into a movie already hating it before I even watched it. This question is what is going to be answered and all your curiosity will be exchanged to support to one of the two sides. This week 's reading consisted of two articles that have different views, but at the same time are written in two different centuries so it is understandable that their views are completely different, a lot of things change in the world of business. I will summarize both articles and then inform you on their main view and then answer the question myself on where a business market stands. I will start with summarizing the first article, this author of this article is named Levitt.T. and it is called "Marketing Myopia". He starts with his main claim early in the article and this claim would be that for a company to grow then the company indeed depends on its customers. If a company is not growing then it is simply due to false management and the manager is at fault. Growth of a company also comes with two other factors that are not particularly as big as customers, those two factors are from population and competition. Due to the correlation that competition has with population they both go hand–in–hand. It also states that companies believe that customers / society is a dependent variable in which this is false because they argue that customers are independent variables and that the market follows the customers wants and needs and not vice–versa. THE GLOBAL WATCH INDUSTRY To understand the global watch industry three key variables were considered : watch technology, watch priœ and the watch 's country of origin. Watch Movement Technology Watch design underwent a revolutionary change in the early 1970s when traditional mechanical movement technology was replaced with electronics. A mechanical watch 's energy source came from a tightened mainspring which was wound by the user. As the spring unwound it drove a series of gears to which the watch hands were attached, the hands moved around the analog (or numerical) face of the watch to indicate the time. Highly skilled workers were required to produœ and assemble the movements in accurate mechanical watches and the Swiss were world renowned in this area. How does this new strategy take into account the brand's current PODs & POPs and existing customer brand knowledge? (25 points). With regards to brand growth, the company absolutely needs to make strategic decisions to ensure that Omega becomes the world's largest luxury watch. This would require substantial strategic decisions to be made especially related to the Omega's product families and its associated communication strategies. The following are the recommendations or the new branding strategies: I. One of the primary change in strategies would require pruning Omega's product lines to make it more coherent and to eliminate any potential intra–firm competition. Typically, the lower end models need to be pruned so that it could be positioned as a more effective Luxurious Brand to compete directly against other Luxury Brand watches. The prevention of any overlapping with sub– brands will ensure that there is no potential risk to the dilution of brand image as well as reduce the risk of cannibalization of the current product lines. This will also help in uplifting the overall brand image of the Omega brand by withdrawing a number of Omega's low–priced models thereby boosting the band profitability which will ensure that there is enough opportunity for the improvement on brand margins – a key factor in reducing the price differences with Rolex.
