The Gorgon Murderer By Ernst Kirchner
The Gorgon Murderer
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a dexterous and influential german expressionist, during the revolution of german art, once stated, "Everyone who renders
directly and honestly whatever drives him to create is one of us." To clarify, Kirchner, establishes the idea that in art history, expressionists illustrate the
significance of conveying feelings and emotions in their artwork in preference of considering a simulacrum; an image that is not influenced by the
original artwork. Expressionists emphasize the role that picturesque colors, shades, lines, bold outlines and other artistic features play in enhancing the
emotional effect of their artwork on their audiences. Expressionists incorporated diverse techniques in their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Perseus stands eighteen feet tall, muscles, shoulders, arms, and legs firm, right foot pointed like a ballerina, with a sword in his hand, forcefully
grabbing the head of Medusa. Athena gave Perseus a shield to avoid the reflection of Medusa to turn him into stone. As I understand it, Perseus' posture
implies how glorious and mighty he is just looking at his stance. Perseus' is the dominant one in Antonio Canova's sculpture. Perseus perpetuates the
superiority of masculinity as he holds Medusa's head high.
In my way of thinking, Medusa is subjected to victimization as her head has been decapitated by Perseus. Medusa's head symbolizes ambiguity and is
also a mythical figure related to the demon Humbaba, who was decapitated by Gilgamesh. The blood poured from Medusa's neck along with two
offsprings. Pegasus, a winged horse, and Chrysaor, a giant or a winged boar, symbolized menstruation. When Medusa was beheaded, children of
Poseidon. Medusa's face symbolized a defeat against Perseus and her face portrays an individual who is helpless and weak. In Christian symbolism,
Medusa represents the Devil. During Ancient times, Medusa's head was used as a mask and mirror that left the Devil's mark on those who confronted
her.
Before Medusa was cursed by Athena she was a golden–haired, fair maiden, who, devoted her life to a life of celibacy as a priestess of Athena. Medusa
was a beautiful young woman who Poseidon fell in love with. Poseidon was

Pablo Picasso Guernica vs. Theodore Gericault's Raft of...
For centuries artists have moved audiences through the use of pictures. As time progressed those images became more and more demanding of the
viewer until they were meant to invoke a physical response. Perhaps the earliest account of such emotionally exact artwork is the 1818 piece, Raft of
the Medusa, by Theodore Gericault. As time progressed people became more politically aware and involved and generations of art portrayed this. Pablo
Picasso's Guernica, created in 1937, is a great example of how modern times soon saw a peak in the occurrence of allegorical and politically packed
artworks. Gericault's The Raft of the Medusa and Picasso's Guernica are both horrifying accounts of the nature of men that aimed to alter a viewer's

This predominantly two–toned color motif allowed for more focus to be drawn to the most dynamic figures, which are the same humans Gericault
wanted viewers to see and sympathize for.
While Gericault's, Raft of the Medusa was essentially criticized for its lack of direct criticism of the event and more a display of the human element, it
is this feature that made it characteristically romantic. Gericault took the national scandal out of the papers and turned it into a personal event for each
of the passengers. Rather than depict the weltering bodies of the crew, he gave them more muscular frames in vigorous poses. Originally setting out to
portray the event as nothing more than a visual truth, he shifted his focus to portray a greater truth of suffering.
The suffering is reflected in the face of every passenger and it is the main focus of the piece than any other element. The Raft's theme of human
suffering evoked empathy and compassion, which helped project the image beyond any hopes the artist could have held for the piece. This
predominant focus on the human condition allowed a stereotypical Romantic piece. Another artist famous for highlighting the human condition was
Spanish–born, Pablo Picasso.
In 1936 the Spanish government commissioned Picasso to paint a feature piece for their international exposition in Paris at the peak of World War II.
Picasso was unsure of what to paint until in 1937 when Nazi warplanes bombed the Spanish town of

Why Did Acrisius Imprison His Daughter?
1.Why did Acrisius imprison his daughter?
King Acrisius had always longed for a son, although he had a daughter. So, Acrisius "journeyed to Delphi to ask Apollo if there was any hope that
some day he would be the father of a boy". To his disappointment, the Oracle foretold that Acrisius would never have a son, and to make matters
worse, that his own grandson would kill him. To escape his sordid fate, Acrisius, feeling no remorse or affection towards his daughter, placed Danae
in a "house built all of bronze and sunk underground, but with part of the roof open to the sky so that light and air could come through". He had
thought to kill her, but fearing the wrath the Gods would surely bring if he killed his own kindred, opted for guarding ... Show more content on

Unfortunately, no man could defeat Medusa without aid, thus, Polydectes thought he had put the boy in a seemingly impossible situation that would

5.How did Hermes and Athena help Perseus?
Hermes informed Perseus that he needed to be armed properly before facing Medusa and that the tools he required were in the possession of the
Nymphs of the North. But to first find them, he must travel to the Grey Women. Hermes guided Perseus to their land and explained that the three
women shared an eye and that when one was to pass the eye to the other, Perseus needed to step in and grab it first; using it as leverage. Hermes
then gave Perseus a sword that was indestructible to the Gorgons' scales. Athena presented to him a polished bronze shield to use as a mirror, since
looking into a Gorgons' eyes would turn him instantly to stone. At the land of the Hyperboreans, the Nymphs provided his winged sandals, a cap that
would turn him invisible when worn and a wallet that would adjust its size to fit anything. Hermes then flew Perseus back over the Ocean to the
Terrible Sisters' Island. Once there, the gods identified Medusa for him, whilst the three Gorgons were asleep.
6.How did Perseus finally succeed in killing Medusa?

The myth I have chosen is from the Ancient Greek culture. It is the tale of Perseus and Medusa. From 800 to 500 B.C., this culture flourished in what
is now northeastern portion of the Mediterranean region. I believe this myth shows the complexities and difficulties in Ancient Greek culture. The story
of Perseus' journey to face evil arose to give the Greek's hope and courage. Perseus was the first of many mighty Greek heroes. He was a demigod who
was nearly invincible. With extraordinary strength and thinking, there was nothing he could not challenge. One test did however push him to his limits
though.
Medusa was an evil Gorgon who had been cursed by the gods. If any person were to look at her face, they would turn to stone. Perseus decided ... Show

She was being sacrificed to a sea monster because her mother offended the gods. Perseus chose to make a deal with Cassiopeia's parents. If he were
to defeat the monster, he could marry Cassiopeia. Perseus then rode Pegasus, a winged horse, and turned the monster into stone with Medusa's head.
The couple then lived happily for the rest of their lives. This myth originates from the archaic renaissance of Greece. This burst of excellence was
home to many of the great thinkers of the time such as Archimedes, Plato, Socrates, and Homer. Though they excelled in technology and the arts, their
society was rather violent. Greek consisted of many city–states that often fought with each other. This had a major influence on their mythology, which
can be witnessed just in this myth. The tale of Perseus represents many values that the Greek's held dear such as bravery, courage, honesty, and
integrity. Perseus helped people by doing what is right despite facing unlikely odds. The ideals presented not only can be viewed as representing the
Greeks but also can be seen as a teaching lesson. The main points of this myth can be applied to this modern age. One example is helping those in
need just as when Perseus helped the terrorized

Medusa's Head Comparison
The story Medusa's head explains the adventure of Perseus. On the other hand the Poem just talks about how Medusa is feeling and what she's been
doing while being a monster. The story walks the reader through the challenges Perseus goes through along the journey and about how another
character named Danae was treated unfairly by her father and the reason for him to treat her unfairly was because he was told that she would have a
child kill the father King Acrisios . Now to get on to the Poem. The Poem is different mainly cause of the theme and by the characters point of view
just by the Poem talking about Medusa and her wicked powers. The Poem is just a summed up version of what Medusa thinks about herself and the
story is a exaggeration of the journey to get Medusa's head. The story was written I think mostly to make you feel different emotions or to make you
feel excited or you could feel scared if that's what type of emotions you feel. So basically the story creates great cliffhangers so it leaves the reader in
suspense. I think that because the story gives different parts and details about how Danae's father treated her, and how she had a son by the name Perseus
whom was challenged to capture Medusa's head. In the poem the cliff hangers mainly contained you fearing over her powers.

How Was Perseus A Hero
Perseus was born into a problematic family and destined to live a chaotic life. His grandfather, Zeus, was determined to kill his own daughter to avoid
his birth. But even after escaping this inequitable treatment, he experienced peculiar adjustments in his life. Nonetheless, Perseus was an
unquestionable hero. The exposition of his journey began when he claimed he would "go off and kill Medusa and bring back her head back" as a gift to
the king of the island.(Hamilton 200) King Polydectes used this tactic to potentially marry Perseus's mother. Perseus then crossed the sea in search for
Medusa. When he arrives at Greece he encountered Hermes and Athena; they helped him enhance his strengths. Both of his mentors give him

Medusa And Perseus Research Paper
The statue of Perseus with the head of Medusa was constructed from 1545 to 1554 and is similar to other works of art created in the 1500s. It
belongs to the Mannerist period. Unlike, the Renaissance period, Mannerism focused on style and how people desired to look. Mannerist works
typically looked artificial and exaggerated. This is visible in the statue of Perseus and Medusa because Perseus' muscle definition is very intense, and
the way he's standing on Medusa's body looks slightly awkward. This statue looks very similar compared to the many other elaborate statues of the time.
Perseus With the Head of Medusa is important because it keeps the story alive. The statue of Perseus and Medusa is a visual representation of a
well–known Greek legend.

Although Medusa is one of the most well known mythological figures from Ancient Greece, she is almost exclusively recognized as a monster, and
not a goddess. She is known for her hair made of snakes and her ability to turn individuals to stone with her stare. However, she is a goddess of birth,
death, and regeneration (Dexter 25). Medusa was typically depicted as a snake and bird hybrid. She is well known for her ferocity, but is also a healer.
Myths of Medusa are a mix of Neolithic European, Semitic, and Indo European (Dexter 25). "Medusa" means "ruling one" in early Greek texts,
however in her myths, she is depicted as a monster most commonly associated with Hades. Medusa was the only mortal of the three Gorgon Sisters.

Perseus then flies off to face the Gorgons. Along the way he runs into thegoddess Athena, who advises him to only look at the Gorgons through the
reflection of his shiny bronze shield, otherwise he'll be turned to stone. Eventually, Perseus reaches the seaside cave of the three Gorgon sisters,
whose names are Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa. Luckily for Perseus, the Gorgons are asleep when he gets there. Perseus sneaks up to Medusa, the
only Gorgon who is mortal. He raises his sword, taking aim by looking at the monster through the reflection in his shield, and chops off Medusa's
head. As Medusa's head flies from her body, Pegasus, the winged horse, and Chysaor, a giant with a golden sword, jump out of her neck. Perseus
plops Medusa's head in the kibisis and starts make his getaway. At this point Medusa's sisters, Stheno and Euryale, wake up, and they are not happy.
They chase after Perseus. He puts on Hades' helmet of invisibility and escapes. Perseus then flies away with Medusa's head packed in the kibisis. On
the way back to the island of Seriphus, Perseus runs into Atlas, the Titan doomed by Zeus to hold up the sky forever. He and the Titan get into a fight,
because Atlas refuses to offer Perseus shelter. Perseus ends the argument by whipping out Medusa's head and turning Atlas into stone. When Perseus
finally makes it back home to Seriphus, he finds out that his mother is hiding out in a temple trying to avoid king Polydectes. Perseus marches over to
Polydectes' palace, where he finds the king hanging out with some friends. When Polydectes asks for the Gorgon head Perseus uses it to turn them to

Medusa In Hesiod's Theogony
Lots of people are familiar with the Medusa, the monster woman with a head of snakes who can turn you to stone with a single look. Not many of us
know that in early stories Medusa was very beautiful. Even fewer folks have heard of the event that connects Medusa to the goddess Athena––an event
that lead to Medusa becoming the monster we are familiar with.
Medusa is one of the three Gorgon Sisters born to the sea god Phorcys and his siter/wife Ceto. In Hesiod's Theogony, the Gorgon's were sisters of
Graeae, sea hags who personified the white foam from the sea and shared one eye and one tooth). Accordingly the Gorgons are described as living in
the utmost place by the Hesperides (The Nymphs of the Evening) and beyond Oceanus. Some report this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hesiod tells of her death when Perseus cuts the head off of Medusa. Accordingly in Ovid's poem of Perseus and Medusa, he tells us that "Medusa
was a formidable foe, since her hideous appearance (living venomous snakes in place of hair) was able to render any onlooker into stone". Ovid also
writes of Perseus beheading the mortal Gorgon, Medusa. Once Medusa was slain, the head was given to Athena to put on her shield. You might
wonder, why Athena? In an earlier time before Medusa, Athena challenged Poseidon to a battle in which they fought, and Athena came out
victorious. After Poseidon's defeat, he hated Athena. Athena had a temple on the island where Medusa lived. Ovid says Medusa was originally
beautiful, with long golden hair. Poseidon was attracted to Medusa's beauty and when Medusa went to Athena's temple to worship, Poseidon took
advantage of Medusa, by forcing her to have have sexual intercourse with him in Athena's temple, it was may have been a way for him to get back at
Athena. Athena did not seem to know or care that Medusa was forced to do this and cursed Medusa, turning her into the Gorgon we know her as
today. On the other hand, Medusa's name also comes from the Greek verb "ОјООґП‰" which

The movie, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief holds a "Perfect Hero" ID to Percy Jackson just like Perseus in "DanaГјs, Perseus,

Comparing Odyssey And Perseus Of Homer's Odyssey
If I were to summarize Clash of the Titans, it would be that Perseus, son of Zeus, watched his entire family die as a result of being in the wrong
place at the wrong time, as a result of which he pursues the gorgon medusa in order to use her head to defeat the kraken. My summery of the Greek
version would be that, Perseus; son of Zeus was cast out on the ocean with his mother in a trunk. After being discovered by a fisherman, Perseus
grows up accepting his godly half, goes after medusa to save his mother's marriage. In the process he saves a women who soon became his wife using
the head of the gorgon, Medusa. Though the story and movie were from very different time periods there are still several similarities. Several
similarities between the movie and Greek version include, Perseus saved a women using the head of the then slain gorgon medusa. Another similarity
would be that he and his mother were found in the ocean floating in a trunk in both versions. Yet another similarity between the versions would be that,
Perseus refuses to live on Olympus with his father. In both versions, the reason for the princess being sacrificed, result from the queen insulting the
beauty of the goddess Aphrodite. Another big similarity between both versions would be that Perseus unknowingly fulfilled a prophecy.... Show more

Analysis Of The Raft Of Medusa
What's so great about this artwork? How can a photo give a sense of emotion? This is all questions the painting; the raft of medusa answers. Theodore
Gericault uses smart angels and pigmentation of different bland of colors to give different sense of emotion from just one painting.
The question as a novelist Julian Barnes asked, "how do you turn catastrophe into art?" to understand this artwork, we must look back to the origin of
the painting. The raft of the medusa was one of the most important masterpieces of the 19th century. As it was one of the earliest well–known romantic
painting. What makes it important is how the artist Theodore Gericault came to paint such a confronting image but before I go on, there is a
backstory to understand what motivated him to pursue such a painting. Theodore Gericault came from a wealthy French family and shows for his
vocation in life to be an artist. He left France to gain some inspiration from Rome, while away he missed all the news on the scandal of the event.
The event which lead to the raft of the medusa was the captain of the ship. Who was given the job of leading the ship not for his skills but because
of his royal connections as he was the king's representative. The captain was more interested in impressing the soon to be governor of Senegal. The
shipwreck would've never have happened if he did not try to impress the governor. The captain pushed the crew to move to fast and along the shore.

The Story of Perseus and Medusa
Perseus is the son of Zeus and Danae, Zeus is a god and Danae is just a human, which makes Perseus a Demigod. Medusa is a beautiful woman but,
she has serpents on her head. People turned into stone as soon as they saw Medusa's face. The story of Perseus and Medusa always interested me.
When I saw the sculpture of Perseus holding the head of Medusa and had his sword in the other had I got interested to know more about the story of
Perseus and Medusa, I have always heard the story about Perseus and that he killed Medusa but I didn't know how. I wanted to know more about the
story in detail and how Perseus actually killed Medusa without turning into a stone. The sculpture itself looked beautiful, it was carved in Marble.
The artwork is portrayed as a naked man holding the head of Medusa in his left hand and in his right hand he the sword that beheaded Medusa and
he were wearing the cap of darkness and the winged sandles. It was all carved in marble. This sculpture was made by Antonio Canova, he was born in
Passagno. This marble was carved in Rome in 1804–6. There are many different ways the story of Perseus and Medusa are told. One of the ways that
is told is that, Acrisius was the king of Argos, the oracle of Delphi told the king that his daughter Danae's son will one day kill him. Acrisius couldn't

Hero Vs. Perseus: A Greek Hero
Mythology is an essential part of Greek culture. Greek mythology is comprised of several heroes, gods and their stories. Heroes of Greek myth share
similar characteristics. They all have divine birth; go on an adventure as well as defeating strong monsters. Finally, when they die they are seen as semi
divine. However, could there be a hero more virtuous than Perseus? Perseus is a Greek hero, because he is a hero with divine birth and a model of
chivalry, Perseus rescued his future bride Andromeda, and saved his mother from Polydectes, an evil and powerful King. Perseus fits the criteria as a
hero as well as possessing skills and attributes that makes him one of the great heroes.

Perseus Smackdown!
Could you have slayed Medusa? Well, neither could I, but there's one person who could and, his name was Perseus. Perseus is a hero because even
through all of his hardships, he loves his mother and will do anything for her even kill, and he would also do anything to defend his honor and courage.
Perseus has many traits and has done many things that put him under the category of being a hero. One of those being the fact that he killed Medusa
and went on a quest with very harsh conditions to reach his destination. An example of one of these harsh conditions is him having to kill the Gorgon
sisters by using his flying sandals and his cape of invisibility.
He had stopped great pain and suffering to many people's lives that could have been brought to them from Medusa ("Facts and Information on the
Greek Hero Perseus"). Perseus's heroic efforts in this story proves that he is a true hero.

Greek Mythology and Medusa
Medusa
Medusa, the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto is a famous gorgon in Greek Mythology. Medusa, who represented female wisdom, was the eldest of two
other Gorgon sisters, Stheino, who represented strength, and the last sister, Euryale as universality. Medusa was the mortal one of the sisters. She
was known originally for being a beautiful young maiden, her loveliest feature being her long gorgeous hair. She was a virgin, and she was raped by
Poseidon, Lord of the Sea, while she had been worshipping in the temple of the Goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war. Athena was enraged
about this happening in her temple. She blamed Medusa for this sacrilegious act and punished Medusa by taking her beauty away from her and turning

It was she who guided and instructed him throughout his journey and slaying. Since the myth symbolized the usurping of her powerful roots in a
culture where she and Medusa were one, it is appropriate that only she would know the secrets to find and defeat the Gorgon, Medusa." (The
Greek Myth, Pg. 141) Medusa means, "Sovereign female wisdom." Her ancient, widely recognized symbol of female wisdom was her threatening
mask. The face that had unblinking eyes. All seeing eyes that see through every person, penetrating their illusions and looking into the abyss of
truth. Her mouth is deathly looking. It is devouring of all the lives of men. Her tongue protrudes like snakes and her face is surrounded by a halo
of spiraling, serpentine hair which symbolized the great cycles and her serpent wisdom. Horns coming out of her head that were meant to scare
men. Birds appear on her head and shoulder, signifying her generative as well as death wielding powers of her dark, crone aspect. They also
represent the heavens of the sky. Snakes coil around her arms, legs or are entwined in her hair and are shown whispering into her ear. The serpent is
a totem of the cycles of life, death, and rebirth and the seasons. It is the connection to the fertile earth and to the underworld. It also symbolizes
immortality as it was thought to shed its skin indefinitely. The serpent is also an emblem of the ocean as the sea was known as

Jackson Vs Perseus
The story "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and the Olympians" is a similar modern day telling to the "DanaГјs, Perseus and the Gorgon"

The two heroes in these story go through very similar events. Both Percy Jackson and Perseus fight medusa but in different scenarios. In the text of
Perseus's story it says, "Perseus swooped down, and with one deft stroke he cut off the Medusa's head." (D'aulaires, 118) In Percy Jackson and the
Lightning Thief, "Percy Jackson and his friends fight Medusa in a garden store that is filled with statues." (Percy Jackson) This modernizes the
older story because it is more realistic that Medusa would hide in an area full of statues, since Medusa turns people into stone it is a good hiding
place for her. They both saved their mom from an evil/bad man. In the text it said, "As soon as the king had gotten rid of Perseus, he had tired to

In Greek Mythology, there are over hundreds of stories or myths told. One story is the story of Medusa which is well–known around the world. She
was young and very alluring at first, but turned into as hideous creature. Medusa is considered one of the most tragic myths ever to be told.
Medusas' life was beautiful at first, she lived in the utmost place by the Hesperides beyond Oceanus. She was the daughter of Phorkys and Keto and
their parents were Gaea or Earth and Oceanus or Ocean. She was also one of the gorgon sisters, who were Sthenno and Euryale, but Medusa was the
only mortal of the three. "Medusa was represented as a very beautiful female; unlike the other Gorgons"(Britannica Medusa). Medusa had nothing to

Essay on Medusa
Medusa
Medusa means "sovereign female wisdom." In Sanskrit it's Medha. Medusa was originally a Libyan Goddess, worshiped by The Amazons as their
Serpent–Goddess. She was considered the destroyer aspect of the Great Triple Goddess also called Neith, Anath, Athene or Ath
–enna in North Africa
and Athana in 1400. BC Minoan Crete. She can also be connected to Africa where she had a hidden, dangerous face, and her hair was represented as
resembling dread locks. Libyan Amazons believed that no one could possibly lift her veil, and that to look upon her face was to glimpse one's own

dumb"(109).
The transformation was to be a punishment for Medusa's crime of hubri (excessive pride) against a god, according to some myths.
An alternative version of this myth, includes Poseidon. Here Medusa was a beautiful maiden, envy of every women and desired by every man
around, her hair was the loveliest. She was a priestess of Athena. Medusa "it's said, was violated in Minerva's shine by Ocean's lord. Jove's daughter
turned away and covered with her shield her virgin's eyes and then for fitting punishment transformed The Gorgon's lovely hair to loathsome snakes.
Minerva still, to strike her foes with dread, upon her breastplate wears the snakes she made"(Ovid, page 98). It is not entirely clear if she was violated
or if she consented. Either way, she was punished for committing a crime because Athena is a virgingoddess, so all her priestesses have to remain virgin
too.
After Medusa's affair with Poseidon she got pregnant with two children, Pegasus a winged horse, and Chrysaor, he of the Golden sword. They were

How Did Perseus Influence Ancient Greek Culture
The Ancient Greeks used mythical characters not only to create stories but to also signify what traits that the people who read them should strive for.
In the stories that the hero Perseus is in we can see many of these traits that were significant in the ancient Greek times. These stories were also
historically momentous, inspiring many artists to depict scenes from the tales for generations to come. The narratives passed down from generations
had such a major impact on the Greek culture so much so that it even affected the people.
The most famous story from the hero Perseus would be the quarrel with the Gorgon Medusa. Perseus the son of Zeus and DanaГ«, was tricked into
promising to obtain the head of the only mortal Gorgon Medusa. After acquiring various items including a shield – given to him by Athena – and
curved sword he beheaded the Gorgon in her sleep using the reflection of his shield to view her without becoming petrified. Perseus then returned to
Seriphus and turned his trickster Polydectes along with his supporters to stone. After, he left for the funeral games where he threw a discus and it hit an
elderly man named Acrisius which killed him fulfilling Perseus' prophesy. Perseus then consequently left Argos and was then credited... Show more

similarity is how Zeus saved Andromeda from the sea monster. He used Medusas' head to turn the beast into stone. Even though there were a few

The myth of Medusa is one of the most told myths throughout history. It seems like a simple idea of how society perceives ugliness. The myth may
be saying that truly hideous people deserved the monstrous things that are coming to them, yet there is more to the story and image of this woman.
People have to look into what happened to her that society perceives her as hideous.Society has to think about whose fault was it for her becoming a

There are some images that one can use to show Medusa, so it depends on what one wants to talk about. The image I picked is of Medusa's head cut
off on a shield (Gill, N.S.). The problem here is that Medusa does not look that ugly. In most pictures, Medusa just looks like a beautiful woman who
has snake for her hair. It seems strange that society and history remember her as ugly. One reason is because of the snakes in her hair. Images
show that her hair is full of many snakes. On her head, is looks to be multiple kinds of snake. Some snakes look to be dice snakes, Natrix
Tessellate, which are venomous snakes found in Europe (McLaren, John). People hate snakes and fear them. In many cultures such as Christianity,
snakes are evil. Satan took the form of one in the Garden of Eve to seduce Adam and Eve to commit sin. It works and mankind is driven out of the
Garden forever ("Are snakes evil? Does the Bible say anything about snakes?" ). The image of a snake makes many shiver in fear of it. Most of the
Greek myths show snakes in a distrustful manner. Most of Ancient Greek believed that snakes were liars and intelligent, but not to trust them.
Medusa is an important goddess used a lot in Greek female myths. In Greek myths, her hair which is of snakes can show the symbolism of snakes.
Snakes were said to have shown the natural cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. In Greek myths the shedding of their skins and by getting new skin it
shows rebirth. The shredding of the snakes

The Theme Of Jealousy In Medusa And The Laboratory
In the poems, Medusa and The Laboratory, the theme of jealousy is explored through the actions of female characters who are jealous of their partner's

will lead to self–loathing. In The Laboratory, the poetic speaker is shown to have an obsession with poison and killing her love–rivals. Browning
shows jealousy as a powerful emotion which can lead to violent and dangerous actions. In Medusa, Duffy explores the theme of jealousy as being a
very strong emotion which can be transformative and potentially dangerous through her depiction of a woman going through a painful transformation
into the monstrous, mythological creature Medusa.
In the first stanza, the poetic speaker believes that jealousy has turned "the hairs on my head to filthy snakes". The adjective "filthy" implies the
speaker is repulsed by her transformation even though this was all caused by her jealousy. The noun "snakes" are commonly viewed as sly and

Perseus With The Head Of Medusa Analysis
Ever since the creation of the Greek myths, various works of art have been created to represent many of the stories that these myths created. One such
example is, Perseus with the Head of Medusa created by Benvenuto Cellini in 1554. This statue, as the title suggest, depicts the hero Perseus holding
the recently decapitated head of Medusa. However, this statue does not just serve as a reminder of the story of Perseus, but also a political statement. To
explore this history of this statue, and the myth that inspired it, we must examine the myth, the sculptor, and the reason for the statues creation.
One of the most important factors contributing to the creation of the statue if of course the myth that inspired it in the first place. The story is
about the hero Perseus, son of Zeus and his quest to slay Medusa, one of the three gorgons, and lover of Poseidon. The story begins with Perseus
being sent on the quest to bring Polydectes the head of a gorgon so that Perseus may have the lady Hippodameia's hand in marriage. Polydectes
sent him on this quest as a ruse to get rid of him so he could marry Perseus' mother, Danae. So Perseus goes and seeks help from the gods Athena
and Hermes in his quest to slay a gorgon, they give him winged sandals, a helm of invisibility, and a sword and reflective shield to slay the gorgon
Medusa. Perseus journeyed to the end of the world to fight Medusa, and he successfully cut off her head by looking at her through the reflection in his
shield.

which includes overcoming obstacles and complications. While sometimes it might seem as if the monsters and creatures in Greek Mythology don't play
a role in the Hero's journey, they are significant in reaching the final goal and the completion of missions. In the tale of Perseus, he was faced with a

Examples Of Insecurities In The World's Wife
In The World's Wife, Duffy challenges recognized historical, fictional and mythological characters from the perspective of the women, reflections on
relations between men and women, the responsibilities and experiences of partners and lovers, for whom love and relationship are more complicated
than feelings others get. Some of these poems are touched with resentment, others with blush–worthy love. The combination of theme and stylistic
variation means that the reader cannot help but prefer some pieces to others. Instead of shock tactics and personal experiences, she seemed to create
more complex and interesting view.
The theme of insecurities appears throughout the poem as Duffy feels like male are leaving women based on their appearance. The poem Medusa
clearly shows many examples of insecurities. Medusa is one of the Gorgons three sisters from Greek mythology, famous for having snakes for hair and
for turning people to stone. Medusa has always been well known among people, and was well known for having unapproachable looks but Duffy tells
her story so that the reader can gain sympathy for Medusa, a monstrous character. The poem begins with "A suspicion, a doubt, a jealousy." This
conveys how jealousy has turned the woman into a monster, and how now everything she looks at turns to stone, which connects to the original
mythology. This feeling of doubt and insecurities continues throughout the poem, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Gorgon Murderer By Ernst Kirchner

  • 1. The Gorgon Murderer By Ernst Kirchner The Gorgon Murderer Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a dexterous and influential german expressionist, during the revolution of german art, once stated, "Everyone who renders directly and honestly whatever drives him to create is one of us." To clarify, Kirchner, establishes the idea that in art history, expressionists illustrate the significance of conveying feelings and emotions in their artwork in preference of considering a simulacrum; an image that is not influenced by the original artwork. Expressionists emphasize the role that picturesque colors, shades, lines, bold outlines and other artistic features play in enhancing the emotional effect of their artwork on their audiences. Expressionists incorporated diverse techniques in their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Perseus stands eighteen feet tall, muscles, shoulders, arms, and legs firm, right foot pointed like a ballerina, with a sword in his hand, forcefully grabbing the head of Medusa. Athena gave Perseus a shield to avoid the reflection of Medusa to turn him into stone. As I understand it, Perseus' posture implies how glorious and mighty he is just looking at his stance. Perseus' is the dominant one in Antonio Canova's sculpture. Perseus perpetuates the superiority of masculinity as he holds Medusa's head high. In my way of thinking, Medusa is subjected to victimization as her head has been decapitated by Perseus. Medusa's head symbolizes ambiguity and is also a mythical figure related to the demon Humbaba, who was decapitated by Gilgamesh. The blood poured from Medusa's neck along with two offsprings. Pegasus, a winged horse, and Chrysaor, a giant or a winged boar, symbolized menstruation. When Medusa was beheaded, children of Poseidon. Medusa's face symbolized a defeat against Perseus and her face portrays an individual who is helpless and weak. In Christian symbolism, Medusa represents the Devil. During Ancient times, Medusa's head was used as a mask and mirror that left the Devil's mark on those who confronted her. Before Medusa was cursed by Athena she was a golden–haired, fair maiden, who, devoted her life to a life of celibacy as a priestess of Athena. • 2. Medusa Research Paper Medusa is best known for having hair made of snakes and the ability to turn anyone she looked at to stone, in terms to petrify, and mythologies continue to evolve around Medusa's ancient and modern significance. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue, New York viewers can explore, connect, and analyze the vibrant pieces of Dangerous Beauty: Medusa in Classic Art by venturing into the Greek and Roman section on floor 1M and be prepared to view gallery 172 with an open mind. The gallery organizer Kiki Karoglou created the exhibition to allow the viewers to examine a wide range of works from various artists and time periods. There were a few pieces that were made by Domenico Marchetti, Gianni Maria Versace, Antonio Canova, and many of the works were loaned by private lenders. • 3. Pablo Picasso Guernica vs. Theodore Gericault's Raft of... For centuries artists have moved audiences through the use of pictures. As time progressed those images became more and more demanding of the viewer until they were meant to invoke a physical response. Perhaps the earliest account of such emotionally exact artwork is the 1818 piece, Raft of the Medusa, by Theodore Gericault. As time progressed people became more politically aware and involved and generations of art portrayed this. Pablo Picasso's Guernica, created in 1937, is a great example of how modern times soon saw a peak in the occurrence of allegorical and politically packed artworks. Gericault's The Raft of the Medusa and Picasso's Guernica are both horrifying accounts of the nature of men that aimed to alter a viewer's political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This predominantly two–toned color motif allowed for more focus to be drawn to the most dynamic figures, which are the same humans Gericault wanted viewers to see and sympathize for. While Gericault's, Raft of the Medusa was essentially criticized for its lack of direct criticism of the event and more a display of the human element, it is this feature that made it characteristically romantic. Gericault took the national scandal out of the papers and turned it into a personal event for each of the passengers. Rather than depict the weltering bodies of the crew, he gave them more muscular frames in vigorous poses. Originally setting out to portray the event as nothing more than a visual truth, he shifted his focus to portray a greater truth of suffering. The suffering is reflected in the face of every passenger and it is the main focus of the piece than any other element. The Raft's theme of human suffering evoked empathy and compassion, which helped project the image beyond any hopes the artist could have held for the piece. This predominant focus on the human condition allowed a stereotypical Romantic piece. Another artist famous for highlighting the human condition was Spanish–born, Pablo Picasso. In 1936 the Spanish government commissioned Picasso to paint a feature piece for their international exposition in Paris at the peak of World War II. Picasso was unsure of what to paint until in 1937 when Nazi warplanes bombed the Spanish town of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Why Did Acrisius Imprison His Daughter? 1.Why did Acrisius imprison his daughter? King Acrisius had always longed for a son, although he had a daughter. So, Acrisius "journeyed to Delphi to ask Apollo if there was any hope that some day he would be the father of a boy". To his disappointment, the Oracle foretold that Acrisius would never have a son, and to make matters worse, that his own grandson would kill him. To escape his sordid fate, Acrisius, feeling no remorse or affection towards his daughter, placed Danae in a "house built all of bronze and sunk underground, but with part of the roof open to the sky so that light and air could come through". He had thought to kill her, but fearing the wrath the Gods would surely bring if he killed his own kindred, opted for guarding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, no man could defeat Medusa without aid, thus, Polydectes thought he had put the boy in a seemingly impossible situation that would result in his death. 5.How did Hermes and Athena help Perseus? Hermes informed Perseus that he needed to be armed properly before facing Medusa and that the tools he required were in the possession of the Nymphs of the North. But to first find them, he must travel to the Grey Women. Hermes guided Perseus to their land and explained that the three women shared an eye and that when one was to pass the eye to the other, Perseus needed to step in and grab it first; using it as leverage. Hermes then gave Perseus a sword that was indestructible to the Gorgons' scales. Athena presented to him a polished bronze shield to use as a mirror, since looking into a Gorgons' eyes would turn him instantly to stone. At the land of the Hyperboreans, the Nymphs provided his winged sandals, a cap that would turn him invisible when worn and a wallet that would adjust its size to fit anything. Hermes then flew Perseus back over the Ocean to the Terrible Sisters' Island. Once there, the gods identified Medusa for him, whilst the three Gorgons were asleep. 6.How did Perseus finally succeed in killing Medusa? When at the Gorgons' lair, the three were asleep. • 5. Perseus Research Paper The myth I have chosen is from the Ancient Greek culture. It is the tale of Perseus and Medusa. From 800 to 500 B.C., this culture flourished in what is now northeastern portion of the Mediterranean region. I believe this myth shows the complexities and difficulties in Ancient Greek culture. The story of Perseus' journey to face evil arose to give the Greek's hope and courage. Perseus was the first of many mighty Greek heroes. He was a demigod who was nearly invincible. With extraordinary strength and thinking, there was nothing he could not challenge. One test did however push him to his limits though. Medusa was an evil Gorgon who had been cursed by the gods. If any person were to look at her face, they would turn to stone. Perseus decided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She was being sacrificed to a sea monster because her mother offended the gods. Perseus chose to make a deal with Cassiopeia's parents. If he were to defeat the monster, he could marry Cassiopeia. Perseus then rode Pegasus, a winged horse, and turned the monster into stone with Medusa's head. The couple then lived happily for the rest of their lives. This myth originates from the archaic renaissance of Greece. This burst of excellence was home to many of the great thinkers of the time such as Archimedes, Plato, Socrates, and Homer. Though they excelled in technology and the arts, their society was rather violent. Greek consisted of many city–states that often fought with each other. This had a major influence on their mythology, which can be witnessed just in this myth. The tale of Perseus represents many values that the Greek's held dear such as bravery, courage, honesty, and integrity. Perseus helped people by doing what is right despite facing unlikely odds. The ideals presented not only can be viewed as representing the Greeks but also can be seen as a teaching lesson. The main points of this myth can be applied to this modern age. One example is helping those in need just as when Perseus helped the terrorized ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Medusa's Head Comparison The story Medusa's head explains the adventure of Perseus. On the other hand the Poem just talks about how Medusa is feeling and what she's been doing while being a monster. The story walks the reader through the challenges Perseus goes through along the journey and about how another character named Danae was treated unfairly by her father and the reason for him to treat her unfairly was because he was told that she would have a child kill the father King Acrisios . Now to get on to the Poem. The Poem is different mainly cause of the theme and by the characters point of view just by the Poem talking about Medusa and her wicked powers. The Poem is just a summed up version of what Medusa thinks about herself and the story is a exaggeration of the journey to get Medusa's head. The story was written I think mostly to make you feel different emotions or to make you feel excited or you could feel scared if that's what type of emotions you feel. So basically the story creates great cliffhangers so it leaves the reader in suspense. I think that because the story gives different parts and details about how Danae's father treated her, and how she had a son by the name Perseus whom was challenged to capture Medusa's head. In the poem the cliff hangers mainly contained you fearing over her powers. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. How Was Perseus A Hero Perseus was born into a problematic family and destined to live a chaotic life. His grandfather, Zeus, was determined to kill his own daughter to avoid his birth. But even after escaping this inequitable treatment, he experienced peculiar adjustments in his life. Nonetheless, Perseus was an unquestionable hero. The exposition of his journey began when he claimed he would "go off and kill Medusa and bring back her head back" as a gift to the king of the island.(Hamilton 200) King Polydectes used this tactic to potentially marry Perseus's mother. Perseus then crossed the sea in search for Medusa. When he arrives at Greece he encountered Hermes and Athena; they helped him enhance his strengths. • 8. Medusa And Perseus Research Paper The statue of Perseus with the head of Medusa was constructed from 1545 to 1554 and is similar to other works of art created in the 1500s. It belongs to the Mannerist period. Unlike, the Renaissance period, Mannerism focused on style and how people desired to look. Mannerist works typically looked artificial and exaggerated. This is visible in the statue of Perseus and Medusa because Perseus' muscle definition is very intense, and the way he's standing on Medusa's body looks slightly awkward. This statue looks very similar compared to the many other elaborate statues of the time. Perseus With the Head of Medusa is important because it keeps the story alive. • 9. Medusa Research Paper Although Medusa is one of the most well known mythological figures from Ancient Greece, she is almost exclusively recognized as a monster, and not a goddess. She is known for her hair made of snakes and her ability to turn individuals to stone with her stare. However, she is a goddess of birth, death, and regeneration (Dexter 25). Medusa was typically depicted as a snake and bird hybrid. She is well known for her ferocity, but is also a healer. Myths of Medusa are a mix of Neolithic European, Semitic, and Indo European (Dexter 25). "Medusa" means "ruling one" in early Greek texts, however in her myths, she is depicted as a monster most commonly associated with Hades. Medusa was the only mortal of the three Gorgon Sisters. Perseus sneaks up to Medusa, the only Gorgon who is mortal. He raises his sword, taking aim by looking at the monster through the reflection in his shield, and chops off Medusa's head. As Medusa's head flies from her body, Pegasus, the winged horse, and Chysaor, a giant with a golden sword, jump out of her neck. Perseus plops Medusa's head in the kibisis and starts make his getaway. At this point Medusa's sisters, Stheno and Euryale, wake up, and they are not happy. They chase after Perseus. He puts on Hades' helmet of invisibility and escapes. Perseus then flies away with Medusa's head packed in the kibisis. On the way back to the island of Seriphus, Perseus runs into Atlas, the Titan doomed by Zeus to hold up the sky forever. He and the Titan get into a fight, because Atlas refuses to offer Perseus shelter. Perseus ends the argument by whipping out Medusa's head and turning Atlas into stone. • 10. Medusa In Hesiod's Theogony Lots of people are familiar with the Medusa, the monster woman with a head of snakes who can turn you to stone with a single look. Not many of us know that in early stories Medusa was very beautiful. Even fewer folks have heard of the event that connects Medusa to the goddess Athena––an event that lead to Medusa becoming the monster we are familiar with. Medusa is one of the three Gorgon Sisters born to the sea god Phorcys and his siter/wife Ceto. In Hesiod's Theogony, the Gorgon's were sisters of Graeae, sea hags who personified the white foam from the sea and shared one eye and one tooth). Accordingly the Gorgons are described as living in the utmost place by the Hesperides (The Nymphs of the Evening) and beyond Oceanus. Some report this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hesiod tells of her death when Perseus cuts the head off of Medusa. Accordingly in Ovid's poem of Perseus and Medusa, he tells us that "Medusa was a formidable foe, since her hideous appearance (living venomous snakes in place of hair) was able to render any onlooker into stone". Ovid also writes of Perseus beheading the mortal Gorgon, Medusa. Once Medusa was slain, the head was given to Athena to put on her shield. You might wonder, why Athena? In an earlier time before Medusa, Athena challenged Poseidon to a battle in which they fought, and Athena came out victorious. After Poseidon's defeat, he hated Athena. Athena had a temple on the island where Medusa lived. Ovid says Medusa was originally beautiful, with long golden hair. Poseidon was attracted to Medusa's beauty and when Medusa went to Athena's temple to worship, Poseidon took advantage of Medusa, by forcing her to have have sexual intercourse with him in Athena's temple, it was may have been a way for him to get back at Athena. Athena did not seem to know or care that Medusa was forced to do this and cursed Medusa, turning her into the Gorgon we know her as today. Comparing Odyssey And Perseus Of Homer's Odyssey If I were to summarize Clash of the Titans, it would be that Perseus, son of Zeus, watched his entire family die as a result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, as a result of which he pursues the gorgon medusa in order to use her head to defeat the kraken. My summery of the Greek version would be that, Perseus; son of Zeus was cast out on the ocean with his mother in a trunk. After being discovered by a fisherman, Perseus grows up accepting his godly half, goes after medusa to save his mother's marriage. In the process he saves a women who soon became his wife using the head of the gorgon, Medusa. Though the story and movie were from very different time periods there are still several similarities. Several similarities between the movie and Greek version include, Perseus saved a women using the head of the then slain gorgon medusa. Another similarity would be that he and his mother were found in the ocean floating in a trunk in both versions. Yet another similarity between the versions would be that, Perseus refuses to live on Olympus with his father. Theodore Gericault uses smart angels and pigmentation of different bland of colors to give different sense of emotion from just one painting. The question as a novelist Julian Barnes asked, "how do you turn catastrophe into art?" to understand this artwork, we must look back to the origin of the painting. The raft of the medusa was one of the most important masterpieces of the 19th century. As it was one of the earliest well–known romantic painting. What makes it important is how the artist Theodore Gericault came to paint such a confronting image but before I go on, there is a backstory to understand what motivated him to pursue such a painting. Theodore Gericault came from a wealthy French family and shows for his vocation in life to be an artist. He left France to gain some inspiration from Rome, while away he missed all the news on the scandal of the event. The event which lead to the raft of the medusa was the captain of the ship. Who was given the job of leading the ship not for his skills but because of his royal connections as he was the king's representative. One such example is, Perseus with the Head of Medusa created by Benvenuto Cellini in 1554. This statue, as the title suggest, depicts the hero Perseus holding the recently decapitated head of Medusa. However, this statue does not just serve as a reminder of the story of Perseus, but also a political statement. The story begins with Perseus being sent on the quest to bring Polydectes the head of a gorgon so that Perseus may have the lady Hippodameia's hand in marriage. Polydectes sent him on this quest as a ruse to get rid of him so he could marry Perseus' mother, Danae. So Perseus goes and seeks help from the gods Athena and Hermes in his quest to slay a gorgon, they give him winged sandals, a helm of invisibility, and a sword and reflective shield to slay the gorgon Medusa.
