Aztec Beliefs On Death And The Afterlife
Aztec view of the afterlife and its significance was the driving force of their life. Aztecs strongly believed in an afterlife. The journey to the afterlife
entailed many things. It was believed that the way you died decided how your afterlife would go, not the way you lived. If you didn't die in the
specific ways which sent you to specific gods, you would go through the nine levels hell; in the ninth you would serve for eternity. "They are not
places of bliss or damnation, merely multiple levels of existence divided in purpose."
Aztec afterlife was not seen as death, but just as another level of consciousness and existence, and learning about Aztec beliefs on death and the
afterlife is the most important way to shed light on the world ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The human heart: abode to the substance of human life, known as the teyolia. The teyolia was affiliated with the world above the earth, it is also
the only spirit to travel to the afterlife. The teyolia was considered transcendent, and to be used in the creation of another being. The human brain:
abode of the drive of love and heat, known as tonalli. The tonalli was affiliated with the highest heavens of creation. The brain was turned to ashes
and put in a box with a tuft of hair to be kept by the family. The human liver: abode to courage, the soul and the engine of passions, but also the
force of cold. This was known as ihiyotl. Ihiyotl was dispersed after death in winds, spirits and illnesses, and was affiliated with the underworld. After
death, every human being had a service, tasked by the gods, in the cosmic process. The departed did these services to help keep humanity alive. (Ian
Mursell)
In Aztec belief, the way you die defines your afterlife. Normal people dying normal deaths constitutes a normal afterlife. (Dockray, 2013) Mictlan(Hell)
is pretty much the default setting. Within Mictlan there are three main gods: Mictlantecuhtli, the god of death, his wife, Mictecacihuatl and Xolotl.
Xolotl is the deity that guides the sun through Mictlan every night, a kind of guard dog of hell.
But before entrance to Mictlan is allowed, the soul must travel through nine levels. These include: crossing a deep river–dogs were buried with their

Odysseus Vs. Epic Of Gilgamesh

20 Oct. 2017 Paper Topic One: Odysseus vs. Gilgamesh
Sometimes it only takes a few seemingly small flaws to determine if one will live a lifetime of adversity, and this appears to be the case for both
Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey and Gilgamesh in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Unlike what their grand titles may suggest, these 'ancient heroes' were by no
means perfect people, and, if anything, it would be more realistic to attribute the concept of imperfection with them instead. However, that is not
suggesting that heroism equates to imperfection, but rather that these heroes have earned their titles from their battles with their imperfections. In the
introduction of the Epic of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Gilgamesh Tb.I P5.) Odysseus, however, was very different from Gilgamesh in terms of his ruling style. While Gilgamesh had exercised harsh and
unjustified rule, Odysseus had difficulties controlling and disciplining his crewmen. Throughout Odysseus' journey home, on the boat given to him by
the Phaeacian King Alcinous, there were many instances where the crewmen did not follow his leadership, made their own decisions, and even talked
back to him. For example, whilst Odysseus and his crewmen approached the island of the Sun god Helios, he reminded them of Circe's dangerous
prophecy regarding the temptations of Helios' island. Thus, he ordered his men to sail forward (Homer, Od. 12.294–299); however, one seaman,
Eurylochus, pleaded him to let them stop for the night and rest; the rest of the crewmen agreed with Eurylochus cheerfully, to which Odysseus gave in
and allowed them to rest one night, if only they all promised not to harm Helios' cattle. (Homer, Od. 12.328–329) Under better authority, the crewmen
would not have pleaded to their leader, nor would their leader have given in so easily; however, Odysseus was easily manipulated and lacked the
necessary authoritative skill. Unfortunately, this was neither his only nor greatest flaw. Actually, Odysseus' greatest known flaw is what is known as
hubris, and it is often described as a sense of excessive pride or defiance of the gods. Odysseus' greatest show of hubris occurred on the

Folktales: The Hero Twins
The first folktale I found comes from the Mayan civilization, located in Mesoamerica for about two thousand years, starting at around 1500 B.C.. This
folktale is called "The Hero Twins," and features a story about two brothers who wish to be gardeners. Unfortunately, there were not gifted with
gardening. The only thing they were good at was ball games. They were so good that people would cheer loudly whenever the boys would play ball.
This drew the attention of the Lords of Death, who lived in the underworld and tricked people into traps that ultimately lead to their death. The Lords
of Death were irritated with the boys because the sound of cheering crowds bothered them, so the Lords invited the boys to play a ball game in the
underworld, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this story, a man finds a poor girl and she asks him to deliver a letter for her. He was already on his way to the destination, so he thought he
would help out. When he delivers the letter, it turns out to be the woman's father, and he appears to be outraged by what he is reading. He
prepares a lot of troops and heads off to war. He leaves two rolls of silk with the man as a gift for delivering the letter. These rolls of silk are
apparently very valuable. When the man returns home he meets the woman again. She thanks him greatly for delivering the letter. It turns out that
the letter revealed plans that helped her father win the war. She rewards him with information that saves his life. The lessons in this folktale
include things about being dependable, trusting other people, and how random acts of kindness pay off. The man just delivered a letter, and he
ends up being rich from the two rolls of silk. One more important theme is that family is always there for you. The theme of family always being by
your side appears in both of these folktales. The one of the twins, they stuck by each other's sides to help get through the challenges. In the second
one, the woman sticks by her father's side and aids him in his war efforts. Other themes that appear in both are just general themes that can be drawn
from every story, such as being a kind person. These two stories are considered folktales instead of myths because they are about

Grecian Myth Of Orpheus
The Grecian myth of Orpheus is a well known tragic tale about love and loss. It is the subject of many operas and movies, each one's focus on the
musicians struggle to rescue his wife from the Underworld and the heartbreak that follows soon after. In Sarah Ruhl's retelling of the story we have our
focus shifted to Orpheus' wife; Eurydice. In this production we given the details of what she had been through before Orpheus' descent, filling in her
own story of life and death. After she dies on her wedding night she is reunited with her father who greets her warmly, though she has forgotten him
during her dip in the unnamed river Lethe. Her father patiently guides her through her new life in the Underworld, teaching her about her forgotten
past and what it means to be alive again. Orpheus, heartbroken, begins sending letters out into the oblivion hoping that they may reach his wife.
When Eurydice discovers the letters, her father kindly reads them to her in which Orpheus claims that he will burst through the gates of hell to save
his beloved. When he does however, he is greeted by the Lord of the Underworld who allows him to take Eurydice on one condition; walk home and
do not look back. Eurydice then finds herself in turmoil as she must decide on whether to stay with her father or return with her husband. After some
coaxing from her father she follows Orpheus but just as they reach the end she calls out – causing Orpheus to turn around and consequently killing her a

The Main Goal Of An Artist
Similar to all great writers and innovators, the main goal of an artist is to spark a creative perspective in the audience. Sarah Ruhl's oddly blunt play,
Eurydice, was meant to open up our minds and create an outlook that has never been achieved before. Her intent was to keep us on our toes and read
between the lines in order to find the hidden truths in each line. The simplicity of the script was meant to be a little strange and dull, but by doing this
Ruhl entered a realm of playwriting that has not been accomplished before. Usually, in the performances we watch we are bombarded with long,
complex sentences that leave the audience confused. The vocabulary used is always either outdated or too complicated for many people to understand
quickly. However, in this place Ruhl took the opposite approach and chose short and simple sentences, leaving more room for interpretation. By
making each line somewhat awkward and dull, Ruhl engages the audiences attention in order to make sense of the words. Many factors could have
motivated Ruhl to write her play in such fashion. For example, when I was reading the play I connected her style of writing to artists and poets of the
1960's, like Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison, who had such a beautiful yet simple play on words. Her outlandish sentences probably made no sense to
someone with a closed mind, this related directly to how the Dylan and Morrison were perceived in their time as well. Many people didn 't understand

Greek Gods And Goddesss : The Father Of Persephone
Have you ever thought, "Wow my family is really dysfunctional?" Well they probably aren't as bad as Persephone's because at least your husband
isn't also your uncle. This was the life of Greek gods and goddesses. Speaking of goddesses, one of the well known goddesses is Demeter, the mother
of Persephone, which is where it all began. Demeter slept with her brother Zeus. Weird right? That's besides the point, anyway they ended up having a
daughter, who they named her Persephone. That's where our story begins. Persephone is the most persistent and caring goddess because of her
background, her kidnapping and relationships with her family.
The relationship she has with her mother and the way she was brought up made her so persistent and loyal. Persephone's mother, Demeter (The one
that slept with her brother, yeah that one) loved her daughter, Persephone. They both were giving the gift of maintaining to the crops and flowers.
They would play together in the fields almost all day, every day of the year. Whenever Persephone would smile at Demeter, her heart always swelled
with happiness, making the crops grow even higher and healthier. There were meadows of flowers as far as the eye could see("Goddess Symbols:
Persephone").
Persephone is the most persistent goddess because of her kidnapping by her uncle Hades, the god of the Underworld. This caused trauma in the fact
that she would be forced to marry her uncle and live with him 6 months out out of every year. To say Hades was

Liesl invites Dunstan to come have lunch with her and Paul. It is because of her insistence that Paul and Dunstan become friends that Paul is
compelled to repay Dunstan the money he stole. That night when I was making my usual prudent Canadian Scots count, I found that several bills
had found their way into my wallet, slightly but not embarrassingly exceeding the sum that had disappeared from it when last I met with Paul. I
began to think better of Eisengrim. When Paul repays Dunstan, Dunstan realizes he can now trust Paul. With the help of Liesl, Dunstan has made a
friend with a member of the underworld. These two people will help Dunstan to continue on with his journey. The next step of Dunstan's journey is
to completely leave his life behind and begin a brand new one. He enters into a new world. This occurs when Dunstan "became a member of Magnus
Eisengrim's entourage." He begins to travel with Magnus because he still wants adventure and he knows that it does not occur often. He says: "This
looked liked an adventure, and, at fifty, adventures do not come every day." Dunstan's journey is based on adventure. He does not know what he is
getting into by joining Magnus Eisengrim's entourage. There will be something different each day; something new and surprising. By entering a new
world, Dunstan is completing one more step of his journey. Dunstan has now reached the point in his journey where he realizes he is completely

A Short Story : The Tale Of The Underworld?
Sing in me, O muse, the tale of the woman who ventured into the unknown land of Victoria in search for her fellow comrade in the abyss of the
Underworld. Tell me of the one whose wisdom and courage overcame the wrath of Hades and prevailed over the beasts of the Underworld. Many
pains she suffered both by land and by sea, and many battles she won. Nevertheless, the wild recklessness of her crew members led to their own tragic
demise at the hands of Poseidon. Begin the tale as she crosses the rivers of the Underworld on the ferryboat of Charon. "Mortal, why have you come to
the gates of the Underworld? Tell me, then, of your adventures," said Charon, the ferryman of Hades. "I am Lydia, daughter of King Theiodamas. I

finding my dear comrade, Crisanta, who is trapped beyond the gates of the Underworld by Hades and its beasts. My home is on the rocky coast of
Washington, many miles away from the island of Victoria. A tragedy struck the town when my fellow comrade and friend, Crisanta, disappeared
inexplicably from her home. For days, grief consumed me and despair weighed me down like shackles bound to my ankles. Crisanta was a talented

Comparing Odyssey And Perseus Of Homer's Odyssey
If I were to summarize Clash of the Titans, it would be that Perseus, son of Zeus, watched his entire family die as a result of being in the wrong
place at the wrong time, as a result of which he pursues the gorgon medusa in order to use her head to defeat the kraken. My summery of the Greek
version would be that, Perseus; son of Zeus was cast out on the ocean with his mother in a trunk. After being discovered by a fisherman, Perseus
grows up accepting his godly half, goes after medusa to save his mother's marriage. In the process he saves a women who soon became his wife using
the head of the gorgon, Medusa. Though the story and movie were from very different time periods there are still several similarities. Several
similarities between the movie and Greek version include, Perseus saved a women using the head of the then slain gorgon medusa. Another similarity
would be that he and his mother were found in the ocean floating in a trunk in both versions. Yet another similarity between the versions would be that,
Perseus refuses to live on Olympus with his father. In both versions, the reason for the princess being sacrificed, result from the queen insulting the
beauty of the goddess Aphrodite. Another big similarity between both versions would be that Perseus unknowingly fulfilled a prophecy.... Show more

Analysis Of Bad Day By Daniel Poster
Bad Day by Daniel Poster has been a song that has influenced my life since I can remember. It is really the first song that i remember hearing from
my child hood. Every time it came on the radio me and my mom blasted it. The song goes through the motion in a third person narrative of
someone having a bad day. I remembered during my childhood when I was having a bad day I would blast this song and it would make me in a
better mood. It really begin the foundation of music for me. This song spoke volumes to me and it would instantly change my mood when I heard
it. Now when I hear it I instantly am drawn to memories of me and my mother blasting it. It takes me back to my child hood in a way. I remember
my favorite lines from the song was, "You're taking one down. You sing a sad song just to turn it around." Its ironic, but sometimes listening to
sad music will brighten my mood. I related a lot with that verse and the rest of the song. This is why Bad Day by Daniel Poster is part of my
attention collection project. Scooby Doo is another piece of my attention project. Growing up I didn't really like watching a lot of television, but I
do remember loving the show Scooby Doo. I was interested in always trying to figure out the mystery of who was the person behind all the
mischief. I remember when I was sick I would watch Scooby Doo. It was a big part of my child hood and I also still like to watch it today. It has

The Significance of the discovery of the Iceman
The Iceman was discovered on the 19th September 1991 by a German couple, Helmut and Erika Simons, who were hiking near the Austrian and
Italian border in the Alps. They both had wandered slightly off trail when Erika spotted a head and shoulders sticking out of the ice, she first thought
it was a discarded doll, but it was later found out to be an ancient traveler now known as the Iceman. The Iceman was quickly named Otzi, after the
valley Otzhal that was north of his death site. At one glance, there really wasn't anything that special about Otzi, the significance of him was that he had
become the oldest, most prehistoric and well preserved mummy in the world, not since Tutankhamen had anything stunned the world this much. After

He also stuffed grass into his boots to keep himself warm. Konrad Spindler was the one who suggested that theory, he also suggested that the cause
of death was a natural disaster, Otzi had laid out his belongings into separate places, and then he had rested, and never woke ever again. It was
assumed that while he was resting, a sudden storm had come and he had died of hypothermia which is said to be a painless death, then shortly
after his death, the glacier had collapsed on top of him, Otzi was a "victim of the weather" (Spindler), which also was the probably the reason why
his body and equipment was still so well preserved, and why it remained 'untouched' throughout the years. Otzi was assumed to have died in autumn
because that was when the shepherds would take their flocks of sheep up into the Alps, and they had used a microscopic analysis to find out what he
had eaten, Otzi's last meal had consisted of dried wheat, bread, and some meat, what was surprising, was that was also traces of pollen in the food.
The pollen was acted as a "Fingerprint for each season" (Spindler), because flowers and plants usually pollinated in autumn. After looking at what
Otzi's diet had been, the scientists looked inside Otzi using X–Rays and Cat Scans; they saw that Otzi's ribs were severely distorted, so Spindler came
up with the 'disaster theory'. In which Otzi was believed to be a shepherd who came back to his village in autumn and somehow got into a quarrel or

American Consumerism: Don Delilo’s White Noise
In Don Delilo's, White Noise different themes are displayed throughout the novel. Some themes are the fear of death, loss of identity, technology as the
enemy, and American consumerism. The society represented in the novel views people as objects and emotionally detached from many things. Death
is always in the air and trapped in peoples mind. The culture that's represented in the novel adds to the loss of individualism, but also adds to the
figurative death of the characters introduced in the novel.

When she is confronted she completely denies it. She was so desperate for the drug because she thought it would end her constant fear of death.
"I'm afraid to die,...I think about it all of the time... it haunts me Jack, I can't get it off my mind. I know I'm not supposed to experience such a fear so

She hoped the drug would end thoughts and comments, like the one demonstrated, that she was willing to ruin her marriage. While she would have

lingers in her every thought, when the truth of the matter is that she died a long time ago. She lost her true self and who she really is. A person that
focuses on death never lives so therefore her fear became her reality. Figurative death is much worse than literal death and what she is living is

The Legend Of Jehoshapet : The Wandering Sword
Once in the lands of our ancestors lived a bold hero, believed to have the strength and wisdom of the gods. The hero was named Jehoshapet. Although
he was great, it was no longer good enough. Many wars he had endured, never having lost, but he confronted them all alone. This made him a legend
and gave him the name Jehoshapet " The Wandering Sword".
During that time, King Arteus, the Ruler of Greece, was in battle with Sparta. Arteus became anxious to end the bloodshed of his people. The advisors
were then summoned and demanded, "is there no one on Gaia who can destroy the Spartans under their feet?" All the advisor's whispered among
themselves, "Zeus or Poseidon will save us." But Arteus was not convinced. He needed a man. The door of the court room blew open and a cloak of
fog covered the ground. From the mysterious cloud came a single formidable voice "Summon the Wandering Sword." The King in all his pride
jumped from his seat and ordered the being, "I am a King, and I demand you show yourself." The fog blanketed the entire room and all the advisors
fell to the ground. A dark figure emerged, dropping the king to his knees. "You say you are a king, but I, I am agod you mortal scum!" The king
panicked and sent for the Wandering Sword, who lives in a cave surrounded by crystal waters.

Gilgamesh Hero's Journey Essay
Gilgamesh was a powerful king of Uruk an ancient city in Sumer now known as Iraq. Created by the gods, Gilgamesh was 2/3 god and 1/3 man he
thought of himself as undefeatable, and carried himself immorally, taking advantage of his people. Being tired of this the people of Uruk began
sobbing, and the goddess Aruru heard their cries and created Gilgamesh 's equal Enkidu. Together they would go on to venture into battles, one of
which leads to the death of Enkidu that brings Gilgamesh to his very own journey to find immortality. This epic demonstrates the traits identified by
the renown American psychologist Joseph Campbell in the story lines of the hero 's journey.

this way? What misfortune has robbed your youth? What sorrow eats your soul? What long hot journey has sapped your flesh? And why did you
depart your familiar home?" (X.I.21–23) In the epic of Gilgamesh, the trait crossing the threshold can be seen as Gilgamesh leaves Uruk and goes on
his quest to find immortality in the underworld.
The trait that Joseph Campbell calls the ordeal is seen when Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh "So Gilgamesh, king, and man, /if

The Importance Of Morality In Homer's Odyssey
The overall point of Homer's Odyssey is to teach Greek morals and social behaviors through heroic tales featuring the main character, Odysseus, and
the struggles he must go through to return to, and defend, his wife and family. Ancient Greek culture idolized strong, fearless warriors, an idea that is
prevalent among most Greek mythology, especially the Odyssey. If it had not have been for Odysseus' bravery he would not have been able to
overcome the obstacles that stood in his path towards home. While Odysseus is exercising his bravery, his wife, Penelope, and son are trapped in
their home with men who hope to marry Penelope. Homer preys on the suitors' disrespectful behavior to teach humility and respect. Conversely,
Homer's teaching of hospitality illustrates the ideal host. Even when their guests are unwanted, Telemachus and Penelope play the role of hosts and
offer food, drink, and a place to sleep for all of their guests. Nearly everywhere Odysseus goes, the practice of hospitality is held in utmost reverence.
Through teachings of bravery, respect, and hospitality, Homer is able to weave a series of epic tales, and create the image of quintessential Greek
morality.
Bravery is taught to be a virtue in the Odyssey, due to the solutions of most conflicts within the story being violent. Bravery was thought also to
affect people in the afterlife, therefore the concept of the fearless warrior was driven by the fear of what would happen to the cowardly. Odysseus'
fearlessness is what drives the plot, from escaping the cyclops' island to facing phantoms in Hades. Midway through the story, Odysseus leaves Circe's
island and travels to the underworld to consult a prophet. On page 126, Tieresias the blind prophet tells Odysseus, "You seek to return home, and home
is sweet as honey... you will find trouble in your house... you shall exact retribution from these men." Odysseus did not know what awaited him at his
home in Ithaca until that point. This shows that as soon as he was presented with the information, Odysseus interpreted one option, which was
violence. When Odysseus finally made it home and the time came to be rid of Penelope's unwanted suitors, he slaughtered them all. Once Odysseus
and Telemachus were

God Of The Earth Essay
Darkness fills a land where evil is barely contained, illuminated by the five gushing rivers that characterize the land, each unique to their region of
hell. At the center, the infamous river of Styx flows from Oceanus, creating a boundary between the land of the living and the land of the dead. The
Kokytos river branches southward off of Styx feeding into the marsh. On the other side of the marsh, the Acheron river ebbs and flows southeast.
Northwest of Styx, towards the Gates of Ivory lays the waters of Lethe, the river of forgetfulness. Circling the Northern region of Tartarus flows
Phlegethon, winding like a python ready to choke the life out of its prey. Close to Phelegethon, east of Tartus, is the plain of Judgments where cries of...

"Mi'lady," came a death whisper that filled the silence in an uncanny hollow way. "Mi'lord has returned."
Proserpina was sure that the spirit could hear her heart rate that was pounding in her ears. She forced her sob down and refused to cry out in agony.
Hades was damned to this land just as much as she was, and there was no shock that he had returned. She just thought she had a few more days free of
her husband, king, and tormentor. Not for the first time her anger for Jupiter burned in her heart, for surely he would have control over Pluto enough to
force her release, but no the gods were powerless. Not for the first time, Proserpina wished she would have died slowly instead of eating those seeds
prolonging her suffering.
"Mi'lady," whispered the laureus. With the speed of Mercury, Proserpina unsheathed her dagger and launched it towards the laureus' head. With a
hellish scream the demon dissipated before her. Proserpina grinned at her blade, as she bent to pick it up and place it back in its sheathe. If only she
could do that to her husband, she would be free.
Proserpina followed the spirit through the palace and went to the throne room at the heart of the palace. Her husband stood regally on his dais and
leered down at her as she approaches the steps the way he did every time she was summoned. Breathing deep through her nose, she performed the

Innocence And Maturation In Thomas Hart Benton's Persephone
Innocence and maturation are two key aspects of the human experience. The innocent mind allows you to live with less doubt and worry but it leaves
you vulnerable to manipulation and people taking advantage of you. Thomas Hart Benton's Persephone portrays the myth of Persephone and Hades.
The Rape of Persephone goes as so; Zeus gives Persephone to Hades to have as his wife. Persephone is out and about and Hades takes her to the
Underworld. A heartbrokenDemeter, goddess of harvest and agriculture, Persephone's mom, refuses to grow anything until Persephone returns.
Persephone is allowed back but Hades tricks her, making her unable to leave the underworld permanently. Demeter compromises that Persephone can be
in the Underworld part of the year but that nothing will grow while her daughter is away, forcing Persephone's return and creating the seasons. Taking a
new turn on the ancient myth, Benton sets the painting in a rural scene and illustrates a bare Persephone lying leisurely, surrounded by greenery with
Hades and his chariot lurking behind her. The juxtaposition between the foliage, Persephone's nude figure, and the wrinkled Hades in the background
creates an imbalance between maturation and sexuality with a blithe young woman caught in the middle. Overall, Benton's Persephone accentuates the
bliss of naivete coinciding with the overwhelming malevolence and sexualization present in the world. Initially, Benton's brush strokes dictate the
movement of the piece, shaping the foliage around Persephone in a nurturing and purposeful manner. I think this pulls Persephone towards the viewer
and draws more attention to her exposure and vulnerability. It also symbolizes Demeter's protective nature and deep–seeded love for her daughter. It
feels as though the movement of the plant life also creates a barrier of protection between the aloof and defenseless Persephone and the wrinkled and
perverted Hades. I believe this determines the importance of protecting the young and naive, especially with an abundance of attention in this world
leading to desensitivity, and later sexualization. This reminds me of a speech Emma Watson made to the United Nations where she details how the
media began to sexualize her as early as

Cerberus Research Paper
Cerberus is a gigantic hound that guarded the gates of Hades. He was posted to prevent ghosts of the dead from leaving the underworld. (Cerberus).
He was described as a three–headed dog with a serpent's tail, a mane of snakes, and a lion's claws. Cerberus was not a friendly creature that you would
want as a pet.
He definitely wouldn't let you pet him. Cerberus is practically the god of dogs. He is Hades' pet and guards the gates of hell. I don't think it would be
fun trying to get in or out of those gates. He is featured in Roman and Greek mythology. Cerberus fawned on the dead as they entered, but would
savagely eat anyone trying to pass back through the gates and return to the land of the living.
The name "Cerberus" is a Latinised version

Ancient Greek Centaurs: The Monster's Body
It frolics in the woods of the legendary Mount Pelion in Greece, it marches on the wide green fields above Aslan's stone tablet in Narnia, and it hunts
in the damp darkness of the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts. It has appeared throughout history and across oceans, a resilient beast which is half–horse,
half–human. Because of its pervasiveness, it is an ideal tool for analyzing human societies and relationships. As one of the most familiar Greek
monsters on the planet, its name is easily recognizable by many people all over the world: the centaur.
Centaurs are massive human–horse hybrids. They inherit the physical traits of both species of which they are made up. Their horse bodies grant them
extraordinary speed and strength, and their human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These reincarnations are consistent with another of Cohen's theories, "The Monster Always Escapes" (Cohen 4). However, most modern
representations of centaurs are not rowdy and savage like Greek centaurs; instead, they are associated with nobility and wisdom. The reason for this is
that humans' relationships with horses have changed over the centuries, which in turn changed the way humans portray centaurs. Back in Ancient
Greece, horses were primarily used in wartime, which made most people learn to fear them. On the other hand, nowadays horses are used more for
sport and art, and are admired for their grace, speed, and strength. This transformation has significantly altered how people view centaurs, and it has
cemented the centaur's place in human culture as a peaceful symbol of knowledge and fairness. It is also important to note the effect that Christianity
had on the centaur, which transformed its physical image from that of the Grecian savage to the modern figure. In Ancient Greece, centaurs fought with
rocks and sticks and other natural objects, contributing to their barbarism. However, with the rise of mounted archery during the medieval era, when
Christianity was very influential, centaurs started to appear in literature with bows and arrows, which soon became their signature weapons.
Christianity also adopted the centaur as an example of how a desire

With a higher sense of individuality, humans began to conceive the gods in a personalized form. This stage in development is called "mythical". In
Egypt, this process began during the late prehistoric period, when writing was being invented and myths were being formulated (Mark)."
The Mythical part of the egyptian religion was the way people personalized their Gods. They started to do this in the prehistoric period, where people
began to show why things happened through myths. In the very end, the egyptian Gods were born.
"Like all religions, that of ancient Egypt was complex. It evolved over the centuries from one that emphasized local deities into a national religion with
a smaller number of principal deities. Some theologians think that Egypt was moving towards a monotheistic faith in a single creator, symbolized by
the sun god. There was no single belief system, but the Egyptians shared a common understanding about the creation of the world and the possibility
of reverting to chaos if the destructive forces of the universe were unleashed (Mark)." Even though there were many Gods, Egyptians all had something
in common. They all had one understanding of how the world worked. Their religion evolved over the years as their culture changed. In the end,
Egyptians had a small number of Gods that helped them understand

Duality In Sylvia Plath's Two Sisters Of Persephone
Duality occasionally results as the cause for suffering, while it is a product of the mind, it can often revolve around condemnation and the fear of
judgement. Sylvia Plath's poem, "Two Sisters of Persephone" illuminates the idea of the duality that exists within a woman's personality. The title "Two
Sisters of Persephone" suggests that there are two sisters being described in this poem, when in reality, Plath allures the reader by revealing that the two
designated qualities actually deal with the two lives that Persephone endured as the Goddess of the Spring and the Queen of the Underworld. Plath
conveys the concept of dualism through the purposeful use of structure, and depicting imagery to illustrate the contrasting lives of the renowned deity,
Persephone. Primarily, Plath illuminates her emphasis on contrast through the use of caesuras. The first caesura, "Two girls there are: within the house"
(1), introduces the foil of Persephone's dual personalities. This is significant as it elucidates the concept of there being two people within one character
setting. In this case the two girls portrayed in the house allude to the existent impression that women are two–faced. Women are known to have two
sides for they only ultimately show what is perceived as face–value, and preserve their other individual persona hidden. Similarly, Plath uses a second
example of a caesura, "One sits; the other, without" (2), to clarify the erratic contrast amongst her two personalities. This is

Symbols Of The Four Horsemen
The four horsemen are symbols of the decline which describes the political, economic, and social framework that society is built upon. They are
said to appear when the first four seals of the apocalypse are opened. There are seven seals in all, but the first four contain the horsemen. The only
thing that opens the seals is the lamb, better known as Jesus Christ. There are many theories of when they have appeared in the past and where
they will appear in the future. There are different interpretations of what and who they represent. No one really knows why they come or when. My
goal in this paper is to explain to you who the four horsemen are, when they have and will they will come, along with what they represent. In the
Bible, they say that any man, woman, or child who has accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and savior will be spared from the wrath of God, That
they will be "saved" and brought to heaven so they do not have to endure the torture because they believed in him. Each of the horsemen will be... Show

What Is The Theme Of The Ice Man By Haruki Mrakami
Essay on "The Ice Man" by Haruki Murakami Haruki Murakami was born in 1949 in Kyoto, a city in Japan. He lived his life in a time and place,
where traditions had absolute influence on people and were very highly valued. This inspired him when he was writing his stories. For influence, he
had to read Western literature. In his works,Haruki Murakami shows that he supports the idea of more freedom against traditions, but still presents the
risks of choosing not to follow them.
Haruki Murakami supports freedom and this is shown in "The Ice Man" as when the woman decides to marry the ice man, the idea that the love
between them is important is more justified than the idea that her family and she cannot explain the decision to others in an understandable way.

Gregor the Overlander from the Overland Series by Suzanne...
In today's world you never know what to believe. Because of this, many people wonder what is and isn't true, making everyone skeptical about the
world. Whether it is something that could drastically change your outlook on life, or change what you eat for dinner, what we hear about in the media
is never 100 percent accurate and believable. For example, one thing that we can never be sure of is what happens to us when we pass on into the
afterlife. The Underworld is portrayed in many different ways in the popular media and in the world in general. Whether the Underworld is a place
full of torture and pain or a place of life and prophecy, the fact still remains that you being sent there is an avoidable fate.
Many of us wonder where our souls must go when we die, and most of us believe in Heaven and Hell. Some people call Hell the Underworld, and
others say the Underworld is something completely different. In many cases, the Underworld could either be considered a world underneath surface of
our world, or it could be just another name for Hell. In Suzanne Collins's book Gregor the Overlander from the Overland Series, the Underworld is a
sot of magical place where a small community of humans has thrived for years on end. The people have been so long that they have adapted to the
darkness and have purple eyes (Collins). In this place of mystery, Gregor is welcomed and made comfortable because they know he is from the

are a symbol of evil forces or bad Karma getting repaid with some sort of punishment for payment. A story that some people know about the
horrifying creatures takes place with Aeneas and his men. Aeneas and his men beach on a land full of cattle and they decide to "... [slay] as many
[cattle] as they wish and prepare for a feast" (Bulfinch and Silver). Aeneas takes the cattle that were not his and slaughters them, putting him in a phase

Phineus upsets Zeus when "he begins prophesying too accurately and revealing [the] divine truths to mere mortals...Zeus [then] blinds the king...and
[puts] him on an island...with [a buffet and]...for each time...he would...eat, the harpies...rob him of his meal" (Wessel). King Phineus becomes blind
and he does not even get a decent amount of food on a day–to–day basis because he is destroying the mortal's knowledge of what they should not know
and revealing it to them creating bad Karma with him and the gods up above. The Harpies are sent down to Phineus by Zeus, so Phineus can repay
his debt and get the bad Karma to relieve his shoulders from the awful weight and turn into good, peaceful Karma. Although some people can
never fully recover from their large debt of bad Karma, just like Sayadaw says "This destructive Karma [brings their] life to a miserable end".
Sometimes people get themselves into this deep dark hole, or destructive Karma, and they do not have a ladder so they can never get out of that
hole and fix where they went wrong. Even with a short ladder it only gives them a slight advantage, but there is still a major struggle to get out and it
may go on forever until the expiration date of a life draws near. King Phineus is creating a deep hole of destructive Karma that even with the Harpies

The Greatest Lesson Of The Cedar Forest
Death is an inevitable and inescapable fact of human life, which is the greatest lesson Gilgamesh learns. Gilgamesh is bitter that only the gods can
live forever and says as much when Enkidu warns him away from their fight with Humbaba. Life is short, the two warriors tell each other on their way
to the deadly confrontation in the Cedar Forest, and the only thing that lasts is fame. But when Enkidu is cursed with an inglorious, painful death, their
bravado rings hollow. Shamash, the sun god, consoles Enkidu by reminding him how rich his life has been, but though Enkidu finally resigns himself
to his fate, Gilgamesh is terrified by the thought of his own. Mesopotamian theology offers a vision of an afterlife, but it gives scant comfort–the dead
spend their time being dead. If Gilgamesh's quest to the Cedar Forest was in spite of death, his second quest, to Utnapishtim, is for a way to escape it.
Utnapishtim's account of the flood reveals how ludicrous such a goal is, since death is inextricably woven into the fabric of creation. But life is woven
in as well, and even though humans die, humanity continues to live. The lesson that Gilgamesh brings back from his quest isn't ultimately about
death–it's about life. Although we never learn exactly why the gods unleashed the great flood in Gilgamesh, we know why Ea rescues Utnapishtim and
through him all the creatures and people of the world. As the god of wisdom and crafts, Ea is responsible for human attributes including

How Did Halloween Influence Early American Culture
When Christianity reached to the Europe, missioners attempted to change the religious practices of the Celtic people instead of trying to abolish
these pagan customs. They wished to introduce ideas which reflected a Christian worldview. Halloween has since integrated a mixture of traditional
practices from pagan cultures and Christian beliefs. Virtually all present Halloween traditions can be traced to the ancient Celtic practice of Samhain
festival. Although halloween is a holiday of many mystic customs; each one has a story behind it. The wearing of costumes, and wandering from
door to door demanding treats can be also traced to the Celtic era when it was widely viewed that the souls of the dead were out and mingle with
living. People used... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If not placated, they dread that the spirits of dead would ruin their home and destroy their property. As the centuries wore on, people began dressing
like these fearful creatures, performing antics in exchange for candy. The practice of " trick or treat" present day is from which the practice of Celtic
tradition evolves. To this day, witches, ghosts, batman, black cat and skeleton figures of are among the favorite disguises. Halloween symbols,
traditions, and practices certainly have had great influences upon Western culture throughout history. In early American history, Halloween was not
celebrated due to the strong Christian heritage. Initially, it was practiced only in small Irish population, until thousands of Irish migrated to American
soil and brought their tradition with them. Some regard Halloween as an Irish holiday with history in the Celtic festival. Traditional Halloween
symbols we often see such as witches, fairies, pumpkins, black cats masks, batman, parties and pranks appeared in United States during the late 1800's.
In 1848, millions of Irish emigrants poured into America as a result of the potato famine. Originally the

Aztec Beliefs On Death And The Afterlife

  • 1. Aztec Beliefs On Death And The Afterlife Aztec view of the afterlife and its significance was the driving force of their life. Aztecs strongly believed in an afterlife. The journey to the afterlife entailed many things. It was believed that the way you died decided how your afterlife would go, not the way you lived. If you didn't die in the specific ways which sent you to specific gods, you would go through the nine levels hell; in the ninth you would serve for eternity. "They are not places of bliss or damnation, merely multiple levels of existence divided in purpose." Aztec afterlife was not seen as death, but just as another level of consciousness and existence, and learning about Aztec beliefs on death and the afterlife is the most important way to shed light on the world ... The teyolia was affiliated with the world above the earth, it is also the only spirit to travel to the afterlife. The teyolia was considered transcendent, and to be used in the creation of another being. The human brain: abode of the drive of love and heat, known as tonalli. The tonalli was affiliated with the highest heavens of creation. The brain was turned to ashes and put in a box with a tuft of hair to be kept by the family. The human liver: abode to courage, the soul and the engine of passions, but also the force of cold. This was known as ihiyotl. Ihiyotl was dispersed after death in winds, spirits and illnesses, and was affiliated with the underworld. After death, every human being had a service, tasked by the gods, in the cosmic process. The departed did these services to help keep humanity alive. (Ian Mursell) In Aztec belief, the way you die defines your afterlife. Normal people dying normal deaths constitutes a normal afterlife. (Dockray, 2013) Mictlan(Hell) is pretty much the default setting. • 2. Odysseus Vs. Epic Of Gilgamesh Madison Aycock HST 328 Dr. Chang 20 Oct. 2017 Paper Topic One: Odysseus vs. Gilgamesh Sometimes it only takes a few seemingly small flaws to determine if one will live a lifetime of adversity, and this appears to be the case for both Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey and Gilgamesh in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Unlike what their grand titles may suggest, these 'ancient heroes' were by no means perfect people, and, if anything, it would be more realistic to attribute the concept of imperfection with them instead. However, that is not suggesting that heroism equates to imperfection, but rather that these heroes have earned their titles from their battles with their imperfections. In the introduction of the Epic of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Gilgamesh Tb.I P5.) Odysseus, however, was very different from Gilgamesh in terms of his ruling style. While Gilgamesh had exercised harsh and unjustified rule, Odysseus had difficulties controlling and disciplining his crewmen. Throughout Odysseus' journey home, on the boat given to him by the Phaeacian King Alcinous, there were many instances where the crewmen did not follow his leadership, made their own decisions, and even talked back to him. For example, whilst Odysseus and his crewmen approached the island of the Sun god Helios, he reminded them of Circe's dangerous prophecy regarding the temptations of Helios' island. Thus, he ordered his men to sail forward (Homer, Od. 12.294–299); however, one seaman, Eurylochus, pleaded him to let them stop for the night and rest; the rest of the crewmen agreed with Eurylochus cheerfully, to which Odysseus gave in and allowed them to rest one night, if only they all promised not to harm Helios' cattle. (Homer, Od. 12.328–329) Under better authority, the crewmen would not have pleaded to their leader, nor would their leader have given in so easily; however, Odysseus was easily manipulated and lacked the necessary authoritative skill. Unfortunately, this was neither his only nor greatest flaw. Actually, Odysseus' greatest known flaw is what is known as hubris, and it is often described as a sense of excessive pride or defiance of the gods. Odysseus' greatest show of hubris occurred on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Folktales: The Hero Twins The first folktale I found comes from the Mayan civilization, located in Mesoamerica for about two thousand years, starting at around 1500 B.C.. This folktale is called "The Hero Twins," and features a story about two brothers who wish to be gardeners. Unfortunately, there were not gifted with gardening. The only thing they were good at was ball games. They were so good that people would cheer loudly whenever the boys would play ball. This drew the attention of the Lords of Death, who lived in the underworld and tricked people into traps that ultimately lead to their death. The Lords of Death were irritated with the boys because the sound of cheering crowds bothered them, so the Lords invited the boys to play a ball game in the underworld, ... He was already on his way to the destination, so he thought he would help out. When he delivers the letter, it turns out to be the woman's father, and he appears to be outraged by what he is reading. He prepares a lot of troops and heads off to war. He leaves two rolls of silk with the man as a gift for delivering the letter. These rolls of silk are apparently very valuable. When the man returns home he meets the woman again. She thanks him greatly for delivering the letter. It turns out that the letter revealed plans that helped her father win the war. She rewards him with information that saves his life. The lessons in this folktale include things about being dependable, trusting other people, and how random acts of kindness pay off. The man just delivered a letter, and he ends up being rich from the two rolls of silk. One more important theme is that family is always there for you. The theme of family always being by your side appears in both of these folktales. The one of the twins, they stuck by each other's sides to help get through the challenges. In the second one, the woman sticks by her father's side and aids him in his war efforts. Other themes that appear in both are just general themes that can be drawn from every story, such as being a kind person. It is the subject of many operas and movies, each one's focus on the musicians struggle to rescue his wife from the Underworld and the heartbreak that follows soon after. In Sarah Ruhl's retelling of the story we have our focus shifted to Orpheus' wife; Eurydice. In this production we given the details of what she had been through before Orpheus' descent, filling in her own story of life and death. After she dies on her wedding night she is reunited with her father who greets her warmly, though she has forgotten him during her dip in the unnamed river Lethe. Her father patiently guides her through her new life in the Underworld, teaching her about her forgotten past and what it means to be alive again. Orpheus, heartbroken, begins sending letters out into the oblivion hoping that they may reach his wife. When Eurydice discovers the letters, her father kindly reads them to her in which Orpheus claims that he will burst through the gates of hell to save his beloved. When he does however, he is greeted by the Lord of the Underworld who allows him to take Eurydice on one condition; walk home and do not look back. • 7. The Main Goal Of An Artist Similar to all great writers and innovators, the main goal of an artist is to spark a creative perspective in the audience. Sarah Ruhl's oddly blunt play, Eurydice, was meant to open up our minds and create an outlook that has never been achieved before. Her intent was to keep us on our toes and read between the lines in order to find the hidden truths in each line. The simplicity of the script was meant to be a little strange and dull, but by doing this Ruhl entered a realm of playwriting that has not been accomplished before. Usually, in the performances we watch we are bombarded with long, complex sentences that leave the audience confused. The vocabulary used is always either outdated or too complicated for many people to understand quickly. However, in this place Ruhl took the opposite approach and chose short and simple sentences, leaving more room for interpretation. By making each line somewhat awkward and dull, Ruhl engages the audiences attention in order to make sense of the words. Many factors could have motivated Ruhl to write her play in such fashion. For example, when I was reading the play I connected her style of writing to artists and poets of the 1960's, like Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison, who had such a beautiful yet simple play on words. Her outlandish sentences probably made no sense to someone with a closed mind, this related directly to how the Dylan and Morrison were perceived in their time as well. Many people didn 't understand or allow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Comparing Odyssey And Perseus Of Homer's Odyssey If I were to summarize Clash of the Titans, it would be that Perseus, son of Zeus, watched his entire family die as a result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, as a result of which he pursues the gorgon medusa in order to use her head to defeat the kraken. My summery of the Greek version would be that, Perseus; son of Zeus was cast out on the ocean with his mother in a trunk. After being discovered by a fisherman, Perseus grows up accepting his godly half, goes after medusa to save his mother's marriage. In the process he saves a women who soon became his wife using the head of the gorgon, Medusa. Though the story and movie were from very different time periods there are still several similarities. Several similarities between the movie and Greek version include, Perseus saved a women using the head of the then slain gorgon medusa. Another similarity would be that he and his mother were found in the ocean floating in a trunk in both versions. Yet another similarity between the versions would be that, Perseus refuses to live on Olympus with his father. I remembered during my childhood when I was having a bad day I would blast this song and it would make me in a better mood. It really begin the foundation of music for me. This song spoke volumes to me and it would instantly change my mood when I heard it. Now when I hear it I instantly am drawn to memories of me and my mother blasting it. It takes me back to my child hood in a way. I remember my favorite lines from the song was, "You're taking one down. You sing a sad song just to turn it around." Its ironic, but sometimes listening to sad music will brighten my mood. I related a lot with that verse and the rest of the song. This is why Bad Day by Daniel Poster is part of my attention collection project. Scooby Doo is another piece of my attention project. The Significance of the discovery of the Iceman The Iceman was discovered on the 19th September 1991 by a German couple, Helmut and Erika Simons, who were hiking near the Austrian and Italian border in the Alps. They both had wandered slightly off trail when Erika spotted a head and shoulders sticking out of the ice, she first thought it was a discarded doll, but it was later found out to be an ancient traveler now known as the Iceman. The Iceman was quickly named Otzi, after the valley Otzhal that was north of his death site. Konrad Spindler was the one who suggested that theory, he also suggested that the cause of death was a natural disaster, Otzi had laid out his belongings into separate places, and then he had rested, and never woke ever again. It was assumed that while he was resting, a sudden storm had come and he had died of hypothermia which is said to be a painless death, then shortly after his death, the glacier had collapsed on top of him, Otzi was a "victim of the weather" (Spindler), which also was the probably the reason why his body and equipment was still so well preserved, and why it remained 'untouched' throughout the years. Otzi was assumed to have died in autumn because that was when the shepherds would take their flocks of sheep up into the Alps, and they had used a microscopic analysis to find out what he had eaten, Otzi's last meal had consisted of dried wheat, bread, and some meat, what was surprising, was that was also traces of pollen in the food. The pollen was acted as a "Fingerprint for each season" (Spindler), because flowers and plants usually pollinated in autumn. After looking at what Otzi's diet had been, the scientists looked inside Otzi using X–Rays and Cat Scans; they saw that Otzi's ribs were severely distorted, so Spindler came up with the 'disaster theory'. • 19. The Importance Of Morality In Homer's Odyssey The overall point of Homer's Odyssey is to teach Greek morals and social behaviors through heroic tales featuring the main character, Odysseus, and the struggles he must go through to return to, and defend, his wife and family. Ancient Greek culture idolized strong, fearless warriors, an idea that is prevalent among most Greek mythology, especially the Odyssey. If it had not have been for Odysseus' bravery he would not have been able to overcome the obstacles that stood in his path towards home. While Odysseus is exercising his bravery, his wife, Penelope, and son are trapped in their home with men who hope to marry Penelope. Homer preys on the suitors' disrespectful behavior to teach humility and respect. Conversely, Homer's teaching of hospitality illustrates the ideal host. Even when their guests are unwanted, Telemachus and Penelope play the role of hosts and offer food, drink, and a place to sleep for all of their guests. Nearly everywhere Odysseus goes, the practice of hospitality is held in utmost reverence. Through teachings of bravery, respect, and hospitality, Homer is able to weave a series of epic tales, and create the image of quintessential Greek morality. Bravery is taught to be a virtue in the Odyssey, due to the solutions of most conflicts within the story being violent. Bravery was thought also to affect people in the afterlife, therefore the concept of the fearless warrior was driven by the fear of what would happen to the cowardly. Odysseus' fearlessness is what drives the plot, from escaping the cyclops' island to facing phantoms in Hades. Midway through the story, Odysseus leaves Circe's island and travels to the underworld to consult a prophet. On page 126, Tieresias the blind prophet tells Odysseus, "You seek to return home, and home is sweet as honey... you will find trouble in your house... you shall exact retribution from these men." Odysseus did not know what awaited him at his home in Ithaca until that point. This shows that as soon as he was presented with the information, Odysseus interpreted one option, which was violence. When Odysseus finally made it home and the time came to be rid of Penelope's unwanted suitors, he slaughtered them all. Once Odysseus and Telemachus were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Innocence And Maturation In Thomas Hart Benton's Persephone Innocence and maturation are two key aspects of the human experience. The innocent mind allows you to live with less doubt and worry but it leaves you vulnerable to manipulation and people taking advantage of you. Thomas Hart Benton's Persephone portrays the myth of Persephone and Hades. The Rape of Persephone goes as so; Zeus gives Persephone to Hades to have as his wife. Persephone is out and about and Hades takes her to the Underworld. A heartbrokenDemeter, goddess of harvest and agriculture, Persephone's mom, refuses to grow anything until Persephone returns. Persephone is allowed back but Hades tricks her, making her unable to leave the underworld permanently. Demeter compromises that Persephone can be in the Underworld part of the year but that nothing will grow while her daughter is away, forcing Persephone's return and creating the seasons. Taking a new turn on the ancient myth, Benton sets the painting in a rural scene and illustrates a bare Persephone lying leisurely, surrounded by greenery with Hades and his chariot lurking behind her. The juxtaposition between the foliage, Persephone's nude figure, and the wrinkled Hades in the background creates an imbalance between maturation and sexuality with a blithe young woman caught in the middle. Overall, Benton's Persephone accentuates the bliss of naivete coinciding with the overwhelming malevolence and sexualization present in the world. Initially, Benton's brush strokes dictate the movement of the piece, shaping the foliage around Persephone in a nurturing and purposeful manner. I think this pulls Persephone towards the viewer and draws more attention to her exposure and vulnerability. It also symbolizes Demeter's protective nature and deep–seeded love for her daughter. It feels as though the movement of the plant life also creates a barrier of protection between the aloof and defenseless Persephone and the wrinkled and perverted Hades. I believe this determines the importance of protecting the young and naive, especially with an abundance of attention in this world leading to desensitivity, and later sexualization. This reminds me of a speech Emma Watson made to the United Nations where she details how the media began to sexualize her as early as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It has appeared throughout history and across oceans, a resilient beast which is half–horse, half–human. Because of its pervasiveness, it is an ideal tool for analyzing human societies and relationships. As one of the most familiar Greek monsters on the planet, its name is easily recognizable by many people all over the world: the centaur. Centaurs are massive human–horse hybrids. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These reincarnations are consistent with another of Cohen's theories, "The Monster Always Escapes" (Cohen 4). However, most modern representations of centaurs are not rowdy and savage like Greek centaurs; instead, they are associated with nobility and wisdom. The reason for this is that humans' relationships with horses have changed over the centuries, which in turn changed the way humans portray centaurs. Back in Ancient Greece, horses were primarily used in wartime, which made most people learn to fear them. On the other hand, nowadays horses are used more for sport and art, and are admired for their grace, speed, and strength. This transformation has significantly altered how people view centaurs, and it has cemented the centaur's place in human culture as a peaceful symbol of knowledge and fairness. It is also important to note the effect that Christianity had on the centaur, which transformed its physical image from that of the Grecian savage to the modern figure. In Ancient Greece, centaurs fought with rocks and sticks and other natural objects, contributing to their barbarism. However, with the rise of mounted archery during the medieval era, when Christianity was very influential, centaurs started to appear in literature with bows and arrows, which soon became their signature weapons. Christianity also adopted the centaur as an example of how a desire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Mythical part of the egyptian religion was the way people personalized their Gods. They started to do this in the prehistoric period, where people began to show why things happened through myths. In the very end, the egyptian Gods were born. "Like all religions, that of ancient Egypt was complex. It evolved over the centuries from one that emphasized local deities into a national religion with a smaller number of principal deities. Some theologians think that Egypt was moving towards a monotheistic faith in a single creator, symbolized by the sun god. There was no single belief system, but the Egyptians shared a common understanding about the creation of the world and the possibility of reverting to chaos if the destructive forces of the universe were unleashed (Mark)." Duality In Sylvia Plath's Two Sisters Of Persephone Duality occasionally results as the cause for suffering, while it is a product of the mind, it can often revolve around condemnation and the fear of judgement. Sylvia Plath's poem, "Two Sisters of Persephone" illuminates the idea of the duality that exists within a woman's personality. The title "Two Sisters of Persephone" suggests that there are two sisters being described in this poem, when in reality, Plath allures the reader by revealing that the two designated qualities actually deal with the two lives that Persephone endured as the Goddess of the Spring and the Queen of the Underworld. Plath conveys the concept of dualism through the purposeful use of structure, and depicting imagery to illustrate the contrasting lives of the renowned deity, Persephone. Primarily, Plath illuminates her emphasis on contrast through the use of caesuras. The first caesura, "Two girls there are: within the house" (1), introduces the foil of Persephone's dual personalities. This is significant as it elucidates the concept of there being two people within one character setting. In this case the two girls portrayed in the house allude to the existent impression that women are two–faced. Women are known to have two sides for they only ultimately show what is perceived as face–value, and preserve their other individual persona hidden. Similarly, Plath uses a second example of a caesura, "One sits; the other, without" (2), to clarify the erratic contrast amongst her two personalities. This is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Because of this, many people wonder what is and isn't true, making everyone skeptical about the world. Whether it is something that could drastically change your outlook on life, or change what you eat for dinner, what we hear about in the media is never 100 percent accurate and believable. For example, one thing that we can never be sure of is what happens to us when we pass on into the afterlife. The Underworld is portrayed in many different ways in the popular media and in the world in general. Whether the Underworld is a place full of torture and pain or a place of life and prophecy, the fact still remains that you being sent there is an avoidable fate. Many of us wonder where our souls must go when we die, and most of us believe in Heaven and Hell. Some people call Hell the Underworld, and others say the Underworld is something completely different. Gilgamesh is bitter that only the gods can live forever and says as much when Enkidu warns him away from their fight with Humbaba. Life is short, the two warriors tell each other on their way to the deadly confrontation in the Cedar Forest, and the only thing that lasts is fame. But when Enkidu is cursed with an inglorious, painful death, their bravado rings hollow. Shamash, the sun god, consoles Enkidu by reminding him how rich his life has been, but though Enkidu finally resigns himself to his fate, Gilgamesh is terrified by the thought of his own. Mesopotamian theology offers a vision of an afterlife, but it gives scant comfort–the dead spend their time being dead. If Gilgamesh's quest to the Cedar Forest was in spite of death, his second quest, to Utnapishtim, is for a way to escape it. Utnapishtim's account of the flood reveals how ludicrous such a goal is, since death is inextricably woven into the fabric of creation.
