The Secret Of Happiness By David Myers

English Composition 1101–61

8 October 2015 Personal Happiness A powerful quote said by pre–socratic philosopher named
Democritus says "Happiness resides not in possessions, and not in gold, happiness dwells in the
soul". In other words, happiness does not come from materialism but instead from the things money
can't buy. In the article The Secret of Happiness the author David Myers writes directly to
Americans about how he believes we need to obtain a new "American Dream" that emphasizes
personal happiness instead of materialistic happiness. Myers also believes happiness resides in the
soul and he says people that think money is the key to happiness are actually less content with
themselves and he uses various ways to prove this point. With that being said materialistic happiness
vs personal happiness is an important issue, and Myers made a strong use of Logos by showing
surveys and studies, Ethos by showing credibility in his argument but he could have used more
Pathos by using more emotion and enthusiasm in his argument. To begin with, in the The Secret of
Happiness Myers begins by talking about the original "American Dream" which is materialism.
After that he says that Americans are getting too caught up on materialistic happiness and not
focusing enough on achieving personal happiness. Myers also writes what he believes are the four
most important things that lead to a happier lifestyle. Those aspects according to Myer's are, close

Summary Of Rhetorical Strategies
Many authors have found that persuading an audience is sometimes the easiest way to grasp the
attention of many and do so by using logos, pathos and ethos techniques. Sometimes misleading and
based around personal opinions, understanding the initial reasons for using these strategies can
explain why they are used. Based on my research these rhetorical strategies can be found throughout
all three videos provided. The first two videos titled "Drunk History – Claudette Colvin and Rosa
Parks" and "Drunk History – John Adams vs. Thomas Jefferson" showed the least amount of these
strategies, while the last video "Breaking News: Some Bullshit Happening Somewhere" provides
the best demonstration of the use of rhetoric.
In the first video "Drunk History

Use Of Ethos In Any Given Sunday
Using Rhetoric on Any Given Sunday One of the most inspirational speeches from the movie Any
Given Sunday, directed by Oliver Stone, occurs during a football team's pre–game warm up. In the
movie, there is a fictional professional football team who is struggling to bring home any wins for
their home town. The speech is delivered by the head coach who is played by Al Pacino. At the end
of his speech, the team's coach has proven how effective the use of ethos, pathos, and logos can be.
The method in which the coach uses to deliver his message really came from the heart. He uses
ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade the football team that they have the ability to win the game. The
coach's speech begins with ethos by creating a strategy for the ... Show more content on

This ultimatum could be included in all three methods of persuasion, ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos
is a miniscule role in this particular phrase. The team's coach has been in their shoes in the past and
knows what they have to face, ergo his credibility. The logos plays into the ultimate decision:
whether or not to admit defeat. In the quote "Inch by inch, play by play. Until we're finished,"
(Pacino, Any Given Sunday) we see a coach telling his team what they must do in order to be
successful. Lastly, pathos is the largest player of the game. The men on this football team, including
their coach, all are very passionate about the game they play. It is an emotional experience for them
all because of how much they care for football and for each other. The mere thought of the season
being over because of a loss is not the way these men want their season to end, and they are going to
fight for it, "We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when add up all those
inches, that's gonna make the fucking difference between winning and losing!" (Pacino, Any Given
Sunday). Finally, this quote shows the amount of emotion that the speakers put into some of his last
few words to his team. That quote is similar to the final punch in a boxing match; this quote is what
got the football team riled up the

Examples Of Ethos In Jfk Speech
The number one thing most people fear is writing a speech and auditioning it publicly. Many people
would rather die than to present publicly. Writing speeches to persuade people is not only a skill but
art there needs to be a little bit of everything, The 3 common things in every persuasive speech is
Pathos, Logos, and Ethos. Pathos is what appeals to the emotion or what tugs on the heart. Logos is
something that has to do with statistics or logistics like financial cost and funding. Lastly, Ethos is
using a credible source such as the former President John F. Kennedy. Analyzing JFK speech to fund
NASA, I can take a look on how this 3 aspects appeal to a great persuasive speech. To begin, John F.
Kennedy's speech contains innumerable amount of Pathos that really make the ... Show more

Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility
of the persuader. This for one greatens the trust and reliability the audience feels hence the
effectiveness of the speech. A perfect example of this is the speaker, John F. Kennedy, the former
President of the United States. He is a great example of reliability and trust being elected the
representative of the free world. Also because of his young age at election he appeals to majority of
taxpayers around his age. President Kennedy is not the only Ethos throughout the speech he
mentions another within his speech like, "...choice which this country must make...under the
leadership of the Space Committees of the Congress." This example of Ethos mentions the Space
Committees of the Congress. A group of individuals that have been educated and are determined to
use taxpayers money efficiently and wisely. This little blurb within the speech gives taxpayers
comfort that their money is going to a reliable place. Ethos is an important aspect in every speech
because it provides credibility of the persuader furthermore, earning

Rhetorical Analysis Of Markets And Moral By Michael Sandel
What should be able to be bought and sold on the open market? Children? A kidney? The right to
kill a rhino? These are just a few different topics Michael Sandel uses in the article "Markets and
Morals" from the book Acting Out Culture. Sandel uses a few different techniques to create a
persuasive article. One is showing his credibility, with a short header illustrating that he holds the
title of Professor of Government at Harvard. Another is pathos, or appealing to a reader's emotions.
Finally, there is logos, or presenting facts, which Sandel does expertly throughout the article.
Michael Sandel's article Markets and Morals is a persuasive article because of the author's use of
strong credibility, straight logic and facts, and powerful and emotional verbiage. This translates to an
overwhelming sense of persuasiveness that stems from the appeal to the reader's senses of ethos,
pathos, and logos.
The author, Sandel, establishes credibility through several different techniques, which all combine to
provide for a sense of ethos. As part of the article " Markets and Morals" in the book Acting Out
Culture, a short foreword is included on Sandel. Immediately, this foreword creates credibility and
respect for Sandel. His experiences, such as publishing several books(40), and as well his his
education and position, as Professor of Government at Harvard award him instant respect. On page
47, Sandel says, "the moral vacancy of contemporary politics has a number of sources", and then

The Use Of Pathos And Adverts In The Samsung Commercial
People are constantly searching for the newest and most advanced technology. Phones are a
predominant mobile device. The advertisements publicize different brands of smartphones. The
Apple Commercial shows Dwayne Johnson using Siri on the iPhone 7 to get through his active day.
The Samsung commercial shows Christoph Waltz using the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to display the
busyness of the American lifestyle. These commercials use pathos, ethos, and logos.
Pathos is an appeal that creates an emotional response from viewers. The use of pathos in the Apple
commercial induces an amusing atmosphere. At the beginning of the advertisement, Dwayne
Johnson is lifting weights, trimming a bonsai tree, reading movie lines, and having his head shaved
while a news reporter on the television questions his ability to balance an impossible schedule.
Dwayne Johnson participates in several dramatized scenes such as taking a selfie while floating in
space in his astronaut attire ("iPhone 7 – The Rock x Siri Dominate the Day – Apple" internet).
Dwayne Johnson has a nonchalant demeanor that contrasts with the frantic people around him. This
creates an episode of laughter because he engages in such unusual activities in an effort to refute the
reporter's doubt. The exaggeration of the various events in his day and Dwayne Johnson's interaction
with other people throughout the commercial creates a comical reaction from viewers. The use of
pathos in the Samsung commercial creates a light–hearted but

Reflection On Writing
At this point in the semester I do not really feel any different than in the beginning. For the most part
my writing has stayed the same as when I first started. The biggest change I have experienced in my
writing is my ability to organize more effectively and to manage my time better. Although my
writing has not changed increasingly, some parts of the writing process has been improved such as
organization and time management.
One thing I have learned during the course of this semester thus far are the terms logos, pathos, and
ethos. I would not say that knowing the terms have significantly affected how I read now, as I feel
like the skills needed to use logos, pathos, and ethos I had already been using. However, now I know
terms and because of such I am able to organize the thoughts more sufficiently. My writing
problems have consistently been a struggle with organization. Having specific terms for skill I
already used has made organization much easier as I can categorize my critical thinking.
I have written reading responses and comparison essays before so I cannot say that the writing in
this class has impacted my writing significantly. Overall my writing has not changed much, however
my organization skill have improved. I have always preferred organization and lists and
categorizing, so learning what logos, pathos, and ethos are has given me a knew way to categorize
information and has improved my organization and time management. While I feel confident that I

Examples Of Pathos By Cesar Chavez
"I have found that words that are loaded with pathos and create a seductive euphoric are apt to
promote nonsense" (Gunter Grass). Cesar Chavez proves that ethos and pathos can actually be very
effective in promoting their case. In an article he wrote, Chavez used the rhetorical strategies of
ethos and pathos to make his case and express his opinion about violence and nonviolence. Both of
these strategies proved to be very effective throughout his entire article.
Chavez's main rhetorical strategy was pathos. Pathos led to how the story impacted the reader's
beliefs; pathos is used to affect the feeling of the reader. It is effective because it allows the reader to
connect with what is being said. Chavez uses the pathos argument to show American's feelings, "the
American people and people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ethos is also effective because it tells the reader what the right thing to do is. Most people will do
their best to follow in the pathway that is considered the right way. Chavez states, "the burdens of
generations of poverty and powerlessness lie heavily in the fields of America. If we fail, there are
those who will see violence as the shortcut to change" (Chavez). This is ethos because it is saying
we are who have to protect people from violence and if we fail, then it is our own fault. This is
hitting a reader's moral side to do the right thing, or believe the right thing. This is effective because
it works alongside the pathos being used. The pathos grabs the reader's attention then the ethos takes
that attention and tells you what to do and how. This is effective because if the writer has their
readers attention by use of ethos and pathos and can get them to take the blame, they will be more
likely to follow what is being said in order to redeem themselves. This way of blaming the reader is
especially effective because people naturally do not like taking the blame and will take paths that
allow them to escape this

Logos, Ethos, And Pathos Essay
According to our texts and lectures, a good argument must be valid and strong, with evidence or
premises, and a conclusion. The premises must be true and of quality, supported by reasoning or
evidence of some sort. The premises must also logically support the conclusion or there would be no
argument. The goal of an argument is to convince the reader to believe in something and to
demonstrate that with careful reasoning and consideration, the writer 's point of view is legitimate.
The key approaches of reasoning in an argument are persuasion tactics called logos, ethos, and
pathos. Logos is the use of logic to persuade the reader with statements containing rational
principles. Facts, such as statistics, or anything that can be proven is an appeal to logos. Ethos is a
plan of action using ethics which help define credibility, reliability, and character through direct
knowledge and/or experience in the situation at hand. Ethos is used by writers to build trust and to
demonstrate their qualifications for the statements they make. Pathos is used to connect with the
reader on an emotional level using tragedy, sadness, pity, and other sentimental specifics the reader
can relate to. All three of these Greek artistic proofs are used in the readings of "Out Of Body
Image," by an assistant professor of politics at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Caroline
Heldman, whom focuses her work on issues of gender and race, and "X–Large Boys," by Allisa
Quart, who is a graduate of Columbia

How Does Cassius Use Ethos In Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar Funeral Speech Analysis There are many different ways to appeal to an audience or
any group of people. One very clever way of doing this would be to use logos, pathos and ethos.
Logos uses inductive or deductive reasoning by citing facts as evidence, therefore proving their
point using logical evidence. Another technique that an author can use is Pathos, when using pathos
the author tries to appeal to the emotions of the audience by describing the effect of a situation,
essentially trying to affect the audience's emotions. When using Ethos it is important for the author
to establish themselves as a trustworthy, respectful, and knowledgeable person. Doing this the
author can use ethical information to win over the audience. The ... Show more content on

One of the first times that Brutus uses Pathos is in Act three when he says, " Had you rather Caesar
were living and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead and live all as free men?(III. ii. ll. 23–24
)Brutus was saying that if Caesar would have not been killed that all of them would have become
slaves, but now since he is dead they can all live as free men and women. By saying this Brutus was
affecting the people's emotions by saying what would would have been their future by using pathos.
The next rhetorical strategy that Brutus uses would be logos. Brutus uses logos when he says "... that
I loved Caesar less, but I loved Rome more"(III. ii. l. 122). When Brutus says this he means that he
killed Caesar for the good of Rome, not because he hated Caesar. The last rhetorical device that
Brutus uses is ethos. Brutus uses ethos when he says " Believe me for mine honor , and have respect
to mine honor, that you may believe"(II. ii. LL. 14–16). When Brutus says this he wants the
plebeians to remember how honorable of a man he is and to keep that in mind so that they will
believe what he has to

Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos
Ethos, pathos, and logos are ingredients in the recipe for persuasion. For example, I would not have
usually watched any video claiming to be academic with cartoon–like characters. I watched the
video because I trust our instructor to provide us with credible information, I feel as if our instructor
has a vested interest in the academic success of us all, and the video was produced in a manner that
made it easy to grasp its concepts. Ethos, pathos, and logos as I understand the terms. Once
watching the video and deciding to read further text on the appeals of persuasion, I was able to
deduce that these three specific items are used in our everyday lives just about everywhere. In
television, ethos is used in my life particularly because I trust

Analysis Of Steven Brill 's Are We Any Safer
In Steven Brill 's Are We Any Safer, an article which appeared in the September 2016 issue of The
Atlantic, the rhetor attempts to educate the audience on the issue of post 9/11 security, and weather
or not it has improved safety or not. The author makes his rhetorical response effective by using
ethos, pathos, and logos to appeal to the audience. Ethos is the credibility of the rhetor, an essential
part to any rhetorical response. No audience would waste their time listening to an unclarified
rhetore. Pathos is emotional appeal, this can be used to influence the audience 's opinion, or to gain
solid audience engagement. Logos is the logical appeal of the response. Does the piece make sense
to the audience? If logos is lacking the rhetor has failed. In Steven Brill's article, he expertly
balances resources and constraints, while using ethos, pathos, and logos to write a fitting response to
the exigence of post 9/11 security efforts.
In Steven Brill's Are We Any Safer, the exigence of the response is whether or not post 9/11 security
precautions have been effective or not. Brill makes this clear by comparing and contrasting security
pre and post 9/11. Brill says that on september 11th there were "16,000 poorly trained... private
screeners"(62). As compared to today 's "46,000 screeners, almost all federal employees, trained by
the Transportation Security Administration"(62). This is just one of countless comparisons the rhetor
makes throughout the article. The real issue

Rhetoric In 'Drunk History-Claudette Colvin And Rosa Parks'
Rhetoric in comedy Have you ever watched TV, or watched a commercial and said to your self
"hmm this contains ethos, logos and pathos", yeah me neither. Somehow they fit into our everyday
life more than we know. Someone, somewhere will try to convince you of something usually by
using the three rhetorical devices logos "or appealing to logic and reasoning", pathos "appeals to
emotion" and lastly ethos "persuasion by appeals to ethics". (587) In the video "Drunk history–
Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks", by Comedy Central the use of logos, pathos and ethos isn't used.

The Rhetorical Appeals : Is Google Making Us Stupid? Essay
The purpose of this analysis is to examine the rhetorical appeals(ethos, etc.) of an argument
presented by two different authors who have written about the subject of how technology is
affecting our lives. In the article, "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" by Nicholas Carr, he describes
how over the years, using technology has evolved his way of thinking in a negative way. On the
other hand, in the article "How technology has changed our parenting lives" by Christine Organ, she
promotes the use of technology, for it has improved her as a parent. This paper is to examine the
rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos found within each of the two articles. While each
author had a different viewpoint, their rhetorical appeals show both similarities and differences.

Ethos
Organ is almost required to use ethos to prove that she understands how other parents can change
their parenting habits. She proves this by saying "After my first son"(Organ 5). Which clearly states
her position as a parent. Without this, it is very hard for readers to believe if her points have any
credibility behind them or not. Then she mentions that she "felt like a less adequate mother because
I didn't share the same feelings of the author."(Organ 9) to portray her life as she struggles as a
parent. These help readers to understand where her frustration, and thankfulness comes from and
can relate with her.
Carr does not use very much ethos, for this article is purposed to the general

Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos
When an author writes a persuasive article of any kind they use at least one of 3 appeals to get their
point across. The appeals of Pathos, Ethos, and Logos are used by all persuasive essay writers to
prove the point they are trying to relay across and are applied to every argument. Ethos is an appeal
to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader,
pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating
an emotional response, logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by
reason. When faced with the question why Native Americans' dying Language need to be saved the
article "Saving America's Endangered Languages" brings up a number of valid points to help
strengthen its argument. Every point that is bought up by the author Ellen L. Lutz uses one or more

emotions to bring out an emotional response a feeling of sadness for the native american people the

An Article On Managing Cultural Diversity Within Sports...
Sports are the entertainment that is spreading throughout the world. Because of this, there are many
sports leagues that are culturally diverse. People have started the address the issue of diversity in
sports. For example, Leo Kahane, Neil Longley, and Robert Simmons wrote an article titled "The
Effects of Coworker Heterogeneity on Firm–Level Output: Assessing the Impacts of Cultural and
Language Diversity in the National Hockey League," and this article talks about how teams and
players have to deal with teammates that are culturally from a different background. Also, Alison J.
Doherty wrote an article titled "Managing Cultural Diversity in Sport Organizations: A Theoretical
Perspective" while this article talks about how sports organizations have to manage the diversity of
the team while trying to be able to perform at their best. Both of these articles do a fine job in using
certain elements of argument to make their respective articles persuasive. However, the article that
talks about the National Hockey League uses logos, along with facts and evidence most successful
while the other article uses mainly ethos and logos most effectively. The three authors that wrote
about diversity in the National Hockey League (NHL) talk about the strategy of making a team
come together because of the diversity by using logic and facts to prove their point. For example the
article talks about how diversity has grown in the NHL when the authors talk about how more and

Act 3 Of Julius Caesar Rhetorical Analysis
What exemplifies a speech in which persuasive appeals and devices convey emotion and persuade
audience members without using false information? Antony's speech in Act III of Julius Caesar by
William Shakespeare exemplifies a speech in which persuasive techniques work to achieve the
speaker's goal. Mark Antony's speech consists of several persuasive techniques that amalgamate to
form an effective piece of persuasive rhetoric. Antony's speech is an effective piece of persuasive
rhetoric because he uses ethos, pathos, and rhetorical questions. Mark Antony employs the
persuasive appeal ethos to deliver an effective persuasive speech. Ethos refers to listening and
trusting in the speaker. Mark Antony exemplifies ethos in his the opening of his ... Show more

Rhetorical questions are meant to sway audiences to the speaker or writers thoughts on a subject.
Antony uses a rhetorical question to not only have the crowd think of Caesar, but also to have the
crowd think of Brutus. Antony says, "He hath brought many captives home to Rome, / Whose
ransoms did the general coffers fill, / Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?" (III.ii.16–18). This
exhibits skillful use of a rhetorical question because Antony not only contradicts Brutus about
Caesar's ambition, but also causes the crowd to support Caesar's character. This rhetorical question
bears the contradiction of Brutus because Antony refutes that Caesar was ambitious. This causes the
crowd to question what ambition means and what their idea of Caesar is. He tries to sway the crowd
to support Caesar by having them rethink what ambition is and what Brutus said. Antony also has
the crowd question their belief of Caesar and of authority. Antony uses a rhetorical question in, "And
to your heirs for ever, common pleasures, / To walk abroad, and recreate yourselves. / Here was a
Caesar! when comes such another?" (III.ii.178–180). Antony persuasively uses a rhetorical question
because he causes the crowd to question their meaning of authority. He also causes the crowd to
once again question their idea of Caesar. Antony tries to sway the audience to realize how good of a
ruler Caesar was and how rare it is that such a good ruler exists. In addition, Antony causes the
crowd to recognize all the good that Caesar did for them. By using this rhetorical question, Antony
shows how great a ruler Caesar was and that there is no one that is greater than he was. Antony
persuasively uses rhetorical question to cause the audience to sway their opinions to match

Brutus Caesar Ethos Pathos Logos
Logos, pathos, and ethos are three Greek, ancient rhetorical arguments that are used frequently in
today's society. Advertisement are common used methods to persuade their potential customers to
buy or support their product or idea. For example, skincare companies use proven facts to convince
their customers that if they use their product, then their skin will look younger or feel younger; this
is a form of logos, a term that refers to the use of logic and reason to support one's ideas. Instead of
using facts to persuade people, pathos relies on appealing to a person's emotion. An example for
pathos is NASAP, the animal rescue program. They intentionally show emotional images that are

All throughout Rome, Brutus is known as being nobleman, yet, in his funeral speech to Caesar, he
purposely talks in prose, a way of speaking or writing that is not formal. Brutus' ethos of nobility is
so strong that patricians, noblemen, and plebeians, commoners, directly address Brutus as "the noble
Brutus" (III.ii.11) Being as noble as he his, the commoners have a difficult time relating to him; yes,
they may respect him, but believing or being convincing in what he says is more difficult for Brutus
than Antony. In contrast, Antony can relate to the commoners and is not seen to have an overruling
ethos; so, this is why Antony ultimately has a more persuasive speech. At the beginning of his
speech, he is presented as not being at all against the conspirators, the group Brutus was apart of. He
repeatedly kept reassuring the crowd that the conspirators were "all honorable men" (III.ii.81). By
reassuring that the conspirators are honorable, the commoners believe in Antony's statement, which
increases his authority power. Noticing that his authority is becoming more powerful, Antony
decides to secretly turn against the conspirators. He questions on Brutus' statement, again, on his
reasoning for killing Caesar; yes, Antony is well aware that "[Brutus] is an honorable

The Last Discovery Of America Rhetorical Analysis
The Ultimate Persuasion
Persuasion is asserted into many works using the methods of ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos is a call
to authority while claiming a sense of dominance, a method where the author exemplifies his
credentials. Pathos appeals to the emotional side of readers with the hope of coaxing them into
sympathizing with author, therefore succumbing to the ideas presented in the work. The purpose of
logos is to persuade the reader by proving a point logically, accompanied with reason. Various
authors use persuasion in order to inflict their opinions upon readers. In the memoir Brown: The
Last Discovery of America, by Richard Rodriguez, the author employs persuasion with the
rhetorical features of ethos, pathos and logos in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rodriguez demonstrates this rhetorical style through the use of pity throughout the memoir. He
attempts to pull the reader into complying with his conclusions through the use of pity in his stories,
especially with racial incidents. Claiming that he "grew up wanting to be white," Rodriguez uses his
race and the desire of "wanting to be colorless" as a way to generate pity from the reader (140).
Using the comparison of young kids picking sides, he expresses that "brown was like the skinny or
fat kids left over after the team captains chose sides. 'You take the rest'– my cue to wander away to
the sidelines, to wander away" (5). Rodriguez tries to fabricate pity and sympathy from the reader
by expressing a story of heartache, and comparing the atrocious classifications of race to innocent
children picking teams. Not only does Rodrigues use the pity card when talking about his race but
also with his lifestyle and social stature. Reaching out to the audience in his memoir, Rodriguez asks
"does anybody know what I'm talking about? Ah, me. I am alone in my brown study. I can say
anything I like. Nobody listens" (38). With this remark, Richard tries to portray himself as an
outsider or an outcaste. People empathize with outcastes and usually do what they are capable of in
pursuance of making the loner feel accepted. He uses pathos to spawn pity

Homeless To Harvard Ethos Pathos Logos
In the movie Homeless to Harvard I believe that Peter Levin the director used ethos, pathos and
logos to prove to people that no matter what, never give up. Liz Murray narrates a story of when she
was once poor, homeless and the daughter of two drug addicted parents. The audience can be for
anyone that can relate to the situation. The most used rhetorical device was pathos which is what
appeals to people's emotions to grab their attentions, following second would be ethos which
appeals to how much of an expert someone is at something, and the last rhetorical device would be
logos which is the appeal to someone's reasoning or logic.

This is a great example of pathos because it shows someone how upsetting her living conditions
were and what she had to deal with. I've been in a situation where I was helping my mom clean
houses and the bathrooms are completely filthy. The bathtubs have a ring of mold around the edges,
the toilets tinted brown and the sinks are covered in toothpaste residue and shaved hairs. Another
example would be the scene when Liz is being taken away by Children
Youth Services (CYS). While she was exiting the door, her father was reaching for a bent spoon to
cook up on and string like object to put around his arm to shoot up. This appeals to the audience's
emotion because it's upsetting that Liz had to be taken away from the only parent she actually
thought was interesting. Around the age of seven I met with CYS maybe once a month to see how
things were going between my mom and dad. Eventually they saw the problem and my dad was
taken away from me for the ungrateful things he's done. Not only is pathos a great way to appeal the
message but ethos is helpful too to show that someone is educated on a certain subject. Liz is an
expert on many things. For one she's an expert on being homeless. Even

Companies and Advertising
Advertisements are made especially to grab the viewer's attention in any way possible. Many
companies use images to try and trigger their viewers emotions or facts to attempt to establish
credibility and get consumers to purchase their product or to grasp the message they are trying to get
across. Companies like Budweiser and Kleenex achieve their advertising goals by using ethos,
pathos, and logos.
The "Lost Puppy" Budweiser commercial did a very good job at reaching their viewers on an
emotional level. This advertisement started at a clydesdale farm, which is Budweiser's signature
animal, with a white lab puppy. Of course viewers are going to be captivated by the adorable lab
pup. As the commercials continues the pup get lost and goes on a journey back home. When the pup
is almost home a wolf approaches which concerns the viewer's because it seems like inevitable
death for the young lab. Until the clydesdale's appear and save the day and they all walk back home.
What a sweet nail biting commercial right? That is the whole point Budweiser has their audience so
caught up in this cute little puppy they do not even realize they are being sold an idea. Budweiser is
trying to get their viewers to look at their product as a family product that establishes unbreakable
bonds. They use pathos to plant this idea of a sweet little puppy with their brand so when their
buyers see their product at the store that is what they associate it with.

advertisement based on how it is being used.
Budweiser first released its "Lost Dog" commercial during Super Bowl XLIX (49). The
advertisement centers itself around a small dog who, out of curiosity, enters a truck trailer without
the knowledge of his owner. The dog then attempts to find its way back home but encounters an
obstacle that it cannot overcome– a hungry wolf. When all hope seems lost, the dog's best friends,
the Budweiser trademarked Clydesdale horses, come to save him. The dog and horses all make it
back home to their owner at the end of the advertisement.
The commercial appeals to the audience's pathos more than anything. Animals, especially dogs,
have a way of pulling with human heartstrings. "...they can be used to transfer desired meanings to
the products with which they are associated" (Phillips 1). In other words, using animals in
advertisements can link advertised products to the feelings that are associated

How Is Ethos Used In Advertising
There are millions of commercials. All of them have different audience and purpose. Advertisement
maker tries to convey audience to look at their point of view, which can be political, social or
convincing them to buy their product instead of others. According to the article "Rhetoric and
Advertising" more than 2,000 years ago the Aristotle came up with three different categories to
describe how people use rhetoric to persuade people: ethos, pathos and logos. Each of these terms
describes different way to try to reach an audience and convince them to agree with you. Pathos is
an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an
emotional response. Logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason.
Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility
of the persuader. Many ad makers use 2 of 3 techniques in their ad. Commercial maker uses logos
and ethos a lot while making a commercial. For example, Luna commercial. Luna is a carpeting
company who installs new carpet in houses at the discounted prices. They always have a promotions
going on which includes get carpet in 2 rooms and get the 3rd one for free, by doing this they are
attracting customers, this is example of ethos. They also have a catchy audio which makes people
remember their number (773–241–LUNA) this is an example of logos. They also have family who
are dressed well talking about how good their

Patrick Henry Persuasive Speech
Throughout history, rhetoric has been used by great orators to persuade a people to believe one thing
or take action on another. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, proved that a respectable argument must
use ethos, pathos, and logos. Patrick Henry's "give me liberty" speech is well known to have
inspired many people to take up arms against the British and start the American Revolution. He used
ethos by proving he would die for his country, saying "give me liberty or give me death," pathos by
explaining how poorly America is treated and how they are seen as inferiors, and also logos by
stating all the atrocities Britain had done to America ("Patrick"). These same values must be applied
in modern debate to vanquish the other side, and it is in these ... Show more content on

Ethos, or asserting credibility of the speaker, is an important tool in order to gain the judges trust
and respect of the words spoken. Hillary Clinton currently has a poor credible record because of the
email scandal, and as a result many voters feel less inclined to vote for her (O'Harrow). In a casual
high school debate, ethos may be obtained by receiving good grades or having several reputable
sources. Pathos is procured using less evidence, but still reaching out to the heart of the judge.
Martin Luther King Jr's famous "I Have a Dream" speech became a turning point in equality for
American people. His use of pathos, such as saying "the millions of Negro slaves who had been
seared in the flames of withering injustice," made people realize how unjust their treatment was of
the African–American population (Eidenmuller). As for logos, logos uses logic in order to persuade
the judge to believe a certain statement is true. For instance, many of the presidential debates in
2016 use logos in order to persuade the audience (Lee). The candidates often speak of the economic
and societal consequences of a certain proposed tax or bill. Although ethos, pathos, and logos have
historically been used in the greatest of speeches, it is these same principles which also lead to a

The Pros And Cons Of Social Media
In society today, we as a whole have replaced communicating face to face and have switched to
expressing our ideas behind a screen. Because of this, a good number of arguments have arose from
post and publications that state someone's opinion about an issue. One of the most highly used forms
of media in our world today is social media, which are websites and technological apps that enable a
person or group to create their own websites and pages for a specific purpose. Social media creates a
second " world" where people can communicate with others across the world in a matter of seconds.
Whenever you have a large collection of people in the same area, each stating their arguments and
sides to something, there are going to be conflicting sides to every situation. Another way of
describing the word argument is by using the words ethos, pathos, and logos. These three words are
used when arguing on social media every single day. Ethos, which is the credibility and expertise
that a person has on a specific topic, is used in arguments for appealing to people who are interested
in their product or service. Imagine that John is trying to purchase medication for his diabetes. He
has found two types of medication online. One is found on a Facebook page by a random person
with no knowledge of medicine, and the other is found on a doctor's website. The doctor has 28
years of experience of taking care of patients and has went to school 8 years prior to those 28 years.

Rhetorical Analysis Of A Purpose Driven Life
Each of us is dealt a hand when we come into this world, it is how we use what we've been given
that matters. Rick Warren, author of "A Purpose Driven Life" gave a speech in February of 2006
about living a life of purpose. The speech was directed at people with an amount of influence in the
world, big or small. The Purpose of this speech was to urge people to go out and use their talents,
and influence to make the world a better place. Rick Warren has an excellent use of ethos, pathos,
and logos in his speech. He uses his knowledge of people, and real life experiences to capture the
audience's attention.
Rick Starts his speech off by talking about a book. He doesn't come out and say what the book is, or
what it is about. This captures the audience's attention from the beginning because they want to
know more about the book. They also want to know more about the author and why he is speaking
to them. He then goes into why he believes so many people are reading this book and as to why it is
selling so many copies. In doing all of this, he gives reasons why he is qualified to be speaking on
this particular topic, which is that he wrote a best selling book about living a life of purpose. This is
an example of ethos because he is telling people to give their life's away to better the world instead
of bettering themselves.
The biggest appeal Rick Warren uses is logos. One of the important things he said that goes against
what people believe was about money and happiness. Rick said "If money actually made you happy,
then the wealthiest people in the world would be the happiest. And that I know, personally, I know,
is not true" (5). People in the world think that the more money you have, the happier you will be,
and Rick says it is not true. He also talks about all of the money that came pouring in after he wrote
the best selling book. In his speech he says that the good life is about giving your life away. With all
of the money that he got, he started giving it away, he did not want to use it on himself. In stating all
of what he did with the money, he proves he is not a hypocrite. It might sound like he is bragging,
but this is a good point to make for the audience to listen to him. He wasn't saying one thing and

In conclusion, the commercials by Lexus and Volkswagen both make the viewer consider their
product. To do this, they use different methods of advertising. Also, both companies target different
audiences. When all is said and done, they have varying degrees of success in doing so. Advertising
is a fundamental force in today's society, and because of this, companies must provide the most
effective commercials with presentation of as many logical appeals as possible.

Using Logos, Ethos And Pathos In Arguments
During the course of GET1021, I have learnt many critical thinking and writing skills such as
identifying assumptions, distinguishing between deductive and inductive reasoning, evaluating the
reliability of evidence or authorities, identifying flaws in reasoning and using logos, pathos and
ethos in arguments. These skills helped me with my assignments.
I could identify the author's main claim and key arguments quickly. Furthermore, by breaking down
the key arguments into components, I could understand them better. These made it easier for me to
describe and express the author's ideas in my own words for the summary writing. Additionally, I
could distinguish the form and substantiate the validity and soundness or cogency and strength of
the author's argument. I could identify underlying assumptions, fallacies and attempts to appeal to
ethos, pathos, and/or logos in the author's argument as well. I also paid greater attention to the
language and looked out for any statistical evidence and counterargument that the author uses to
support his argument when doing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

can see celebrities such as Harrison Ford and Don Cheadle traveling around the world and U.S

its drastic change. Harrison Ford begins by establish himself more than just a celebrity, but as
someone who have been interested in climate change and seeks for more answers. Showtime, uses
Ford's ethos to imply not only that the audience should pay attention to him as a celebrity, but as a
man who is worried about climate change and searches to understand what scientists say about it
and what is the take of governments on all of it. Ford does not claim himself as an authority,
nonetheless, he is exploring the matter as one interested person would. However, his heroic tone
gives the audience an emotional connection with the documentary piece because it strikes people
memory that he is the "guy", an "adventurous man", based on his movies characters. Although, the

Rhetorical Analysis Of This Is Water
The commencement speech, "This is Water" by David Foster Wallace is widely known due to the
amazing message it provides. Wallace's speech is unlike any other, which are usually very positive,
inspirational, and oftentimes cliche. He asserts that the value behind an education is learning how to
become aware of what we choose to think, and in doing so it brings freedom and vitality to an
individual. His speech is very unorthodox, the structure is very different to normal graduation
speeches, making his oration unique and special. Wallace uses rhetorical appeals to speak with
recent graduates.
The first rhetorical appeal used is Pathos. This is the rhetorical appeal he uses the most and can be
found throughout his whole speech. Pathos is referred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ethos is the ethical appeal that convinces the audience of the writer's credibility and/or character.
Ethos is used to convince an audience that the author is worth listening to because they are credible.
The language has to be appropriate and suit the audience and topic. The author must sound unbiased
and present their expertise all while using proper syntax and grammar. Wallace displays Ethos in his
speech by portraying himself as a confident and genuine person. For instance, Wallace tells his
listeners, "if you're worried that I plan to present myself here as the wise, older fish explaining what
water is to you younger fish, please don't be"(Wallace). By doing so, Wallace is displaying a sense
of humility that comforts his audience, they now know he is a trustful person not pretending to be
someone he is not. He also sounds very confident in what he will explain, he isn't there to say
meaningless things, rather something significant to them. Calling his audience younger fish shows
that his targeted audience is indeed young college graduates. Throughout his speech Wallace assures
his listeners that he is not there to lecture them on unnecessary topics. This also gives him more
credibility because it shows his audience he considered their concerns and made an effort to avoid
them. Wallace's audience can now become more appreciative towards him and view him as a

Rhetorical Address
Logos, pathos, and ethos have been existing to empower and strengthen our writing. In this
rhetorical analysis essay, logos, pathos, and ethos that are used in the Annual Address will be clearly
identified and evaluated. The Annual Address written by Joseph Jackson discusses the issues of
discrimination and racism. It was written and delivered at the 84th Annual Session of the National
Baptist Movement. Unlike many others back in history, Jackson believes that actions should be
taken place before any demanded result. Jackson appeals to his fellow race to take action and adds
credibility to his claims by using historical examples from the past. Also, Jackson makes personal
connections with his targeted audience, black people, which builds trust between the speaker and the
reader. We will be examining the context of the this speech and Jackson's perspective and claims.
The Annual Address starts off discussing the foundation of this nation. Into a few paragraphs, he
addresses the civil rights struggle and the reason behind it. About half of his speech address some
advice and suggestions for the future of the black people. Joseph Jackson writes the Annual Address,
telling the black people to put an action in their beliefs and for justice, in a way contradicting King's
perspective on "peaceful' protests. In page two, Jackson states,"What is this struggle for civil rights?
I answer, it is an effort of American citizens to get full equality of opportunity. It is the resolution
and the determination that there shall be in these United States one class of citizens and that is first
class citizens. This is a struggle to adopt in practice as well as theory the concept of man on which
the Declaration of Independence is based, and to fully implement the Federal Constitution, one of
the greatest documents for human freedom since the writing of the Magna Carta. The civil rights
struggle is a struggle for full freedom, justice, and equality before the law. It is a struggle to bring
from paper the lofty ideals of America, and to apply them in practice to the lives and actions of all
Americans. In reality it is America's struggle to be herself, to fulfill the highest promises of her
being, and to build a social order after

How Does Raph Use Ethos In Lord Of The Flies
Raph tends to use logos and Jack relies on ethos. They both use a variety of ethos, pathos, and logos
in their ultimate goal of persuading the boys to join their tribes. Ralph's balance of rhetoric makes
him the dominant leader based on his traits compared to Jack. Ralph and Jack use ethos, credibility,
of leadership in attempt of winning the other boys' respect. For example, as Jack tries to gain the
vote of the other boys he declares, "I ought to be chief... because I'm chapter chorister and head boy"
(22). Jack feels his ability to sing and experience with controls would make him a good leader.
When it comes to survival, singing will not benefit any of of the boys, so it is an unnecessary talent.

the others in order to get the necessary work done. The fire is a logical idea because is someone sees
it they will eventually be rescued. Comparatively, Jack uses his resources when no one knows how
to start a fire as he commands, "His specs–use them as burning glasses!" (40). Jack resourcefulness
of using the glasses to start the fire not only works, but helps them get rescued, keeps them warms,
and allows them to cook. Nevertheless, Jack forcefully taking Piggy's lenses is a symbol of lack of
respect because he takes advantage of Piggy after viewing his vulnerability. Jack uses Piggy's

Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos
From this course, I learned many different concepts. The one that I feel will contribute the most to
my life outside of this class would be pathos, ethos, and logos. Persuasion is something that most
people deal with often. Pathos, ethos, and logos are something that has a significant role in
persuasion.
Pathos are used to appeal to emotions of the person. Using pathos to persuade someone you want to
convince them with an emotional response. These may make your paper more effective, because if it
has anything to do with their emotions it will make them more interested in what you have to say.
An example of pathos would be "If we don't move soon, we're all going to die! Can't you see how
dangerous it would be to stay?" This shows that if someone told you this it would affect how you
felt about staying. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By using ethos, you are letting your audience know that what you are saying is true and not just
what you want them to believe. An example of ethos would include something like "As a doctor, I
am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely produce the best results." When you
hear that someone is a doctor, it makes you trust them when they are telling you anything about
helping solve anything wrong with your body.
Logos is a way of persuading your audience by logic. When using logos, you are persuading your
audience more by reason. Using reason for persuading is when the persuader makes it seem like
what they are persuading you is the best option. An example of logos would be "You don't need to
jump off a bridge to know that it's a bad idea. Why then would you need to try drugs to know if
they're damaging?" This would show you that it is common sense that doing drugs is bad, so don't
try it to see if it is

Persuasive Literary Devices In Could We Be Amusing...
Could We Be Amusing Ourselves to Death?
The evolution of technology has become indescribable. Technology is prevalent in our society, as
well as its portrayal in the media, a seemingly essential aspect of our everyday lives. Although many
idolize how technology has improved our lives, many fail to recognize technology's faults. By using
three persuasive literary devices (pathos, logos, and ethos), Neil Postman expresses his concern for
technological advancement and possible failure in the book Amusing Ourselves to Death. Logos
appeals to logic; when using a persuasive device such as logos, you are using logical reasoning to
appeal to the reader. When using logos, you must include facts, statistics, and citing credible
sources. By using ethos, the author conveys his ideas while being well aware of what he is talking
about by utilizing credible sources. Pathos, however, conveys the author's ideas by appealing to the
reader's emotions. Postman does an outstanding job of orchestrating a piece using the most popular
persuasive elements. Postman was able to incorporate all three of these devices into his book, but
the most prominent one in my opinion, and that helps to best convey Postman's point, is logos;
statistics and facts are two things you very rarely can fight against. Over and over Postman uses
facts on how the media is basically dumbing us down. For example, Postman pointed out that with
the rise of the televised age there was then a decrease in literacy.

In paragraph 6 Lovins states that "Inefficient light trucks and cars, which consume 40% of our oil,
are at the center of our oil habit. And ultralight and ultrastrong materials for vehicles are the No. 1
enabling technology for changing that." He reaffirms this point with many more facts and statistics
throughout this article. Lovins' other main point is the benefit of using biofuels as a substitute for
oil. He encourages his point of view in paragraph one on page three by saying that "Oil industry
giants like Shell and BP are already preparing to move beyond oil by transforming themselves into
energy companies."
Lovins' argument is valid and provides good evidence to support his point of view. He mainly uses
logos in his arguments. This article is full of statistics which may make the argument valid, but does
not necessarily make it a good, well rounded argument. Although Lovins did a very good job using
logos, he missed some very easy opportunities to use ethos and pathos in his argument as well.
Providing information on how much America's overconsumption of oil is negatively affecting the
environment would be a very effective method of using ethos and pathos in his argument without
deviating from his "logos–style" of writing. To effectively use ethos and pathos, Lovins could have

because there are too many emotions involved in gun control debates and because in general there is

showing credibility in several ways. First we see ethos expressed to stop gun control in "Pros/Cons:

information creating an in text citation. Using in text citations helps the writer show knowledge of
the issue at hand giving the author credibility and raising the odds of readers sharing the opinions
learned from "Pro/Con: Gun Legislation" and articles like it that are against having guns in America.

How Does Senator Bob Corkr Use Ethos Pathos Logos
Senator Bob Corker strongly uses Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. All three are used strongly throughout
his many interviews. In the first interview excerpt, Corker used Ethos heavily with a few examples
of Logos. Throughout the interview, Corker gives many examples of President Trump urging him to

he's done to provide Ethos that show his credibility as a political figure. To tie into the Ethos, Corker
also used Logos when providing the dates of his meetings with other political figures. In the second
interview excerpt, Corker uses Ethos and Pathos with a small amount of Logos. Ethos is shown in
the statements given about his part in the Iran deal and the President's urging for him to run. It is
also shown when Corker tells of the President inviting him to a private dinner and the other multiple
occasions where the two have met. Similar to the first excerpt, these Ethos examples show his
credibility to be a political figure. Corker uses Pathos when he talks about growing up, "...not using

Julius Caesar Ethos Pathos Logos Essay
Ethos, Pathos, Logos
Some of the most famous writers from William Shakespeare to John Green have used three different
persuasive techniques for several years. Have you ever heard of ethos, pathos, and logos? In the
famous tragedy of Julius Caesar the author William Shakespeare uses ethos, pathos, and logos for
persuading something or someone. In Julius Caesar Shakespeare uses these traits in Brutus's and
Antony's funeral speeches to persuade the citizens of Rome to hear them out. In the tragedy Caesar
was the emperor of Rome until his own senators killed him. The senators claimed they had to kill
him because he was getting to ambitious and it was getting worse. They had to save the citizens
before they start to get hurt by Caesar's actions. The most ethos, pathos, and logos takes place at the
funeral when Brutus and Antony talk about why Caesar had to die. Ethos, Pathos, and logos are all
used in the tragedy of Julius Caesar's funeral scene, some more effectively than others but they are
all used to persuade the crowd one way or another.

The Secret Of Happiness By David Myers

  • 1. The Secret Of Happiness By David Myers Heidi Alfaro English Composition 1101–61 Professor Kate 8 October 2015 Personal Happiness A powerful quote said by pre–socratic philosopher named Democritus says "Happiness resides not in possessions, and not in gold, happiness dwells in the soul". In other words, happiness does not come from materialism but instead from the things money can't buy. In the article The Secret of Happiness the author David Myers writes directly to Americans about how he believes we need to obtain a new "American Dream" that emphasizes personal happiness instead of materialistic happiness. Myers also believes happiness resides in the soul and he says people that think money is the key to happiness are actually less content with themselves and he uses various ways to prove this point. With that being said materialistic happiness vs personal happiness is an important issue, and Myers made a strong use of Logos by showing surveys and studies, Ethos by showing credibility in his argument but he could have used more Pathos by using more emotion and enthusiasm in his argument. To begin with, in the The Secret of Happiness Myers begins by talking about the original "American Dream" which is materialism. After that he says that Americans are getting too caught up on materialistic happiness and not focusing enough on achieving personal happiness. Myers also writes what he believes are the four most important things that lead to a happier lifestyle. Those aspects according to Myer's are, close ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Summary Of Rhetorical Strategies Many authors have found that persuading an audience is sometimes the easiest way to grasp the attention of many and do so by using logos, pathos and ethos techniques. Sometimes misleading and based around personal opinions, understanding the initial reasons for using these strategies can explain why they are used. Based on my research these rhetorical strategies can be found throughout all three videos provided. The first two videos titled "Drunk History – Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks" and "Drunk History – John Adams vs. Thomas Jefferson" showed the least amount of these strategies, while the last video "Breaking News: Some Bullshit Happening Somewhere" provides the best demonstration of the use of rhetoric. • 9. Use Of Ethos In Any Given Sunday Using Rhetoric on Any Given Sunday One of the most inspirational speeches from the movie Any Given Sunday, directed by Oliver Stone, occurs during a football team's pre–game warm up. In the movie, there is a fictional professional football team who is struggling to bring home any wins for their home town. The speech is delivered by the head coach who is played by Al Pacino. At the end of his speech, the team's coach has proven how effective the use of ethos, pathos, and logos can be. The method in which the coach uses to deliver his message really came from the heart. He uses ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade the football team that they have the ability to win the game. The coach's speech begins with ethos by creating a strategy for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This ultimatum could be included in all three methods of persuasion, ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is a miniscule role in this particular phrase. The team's coach has been in their shoes in the past and knows what they have to face, ergo his credibility. The logos plays into the ultimate decision: whether or not to admit defeat. In the quote "Inch by inch, play by play. Until we're finished," (Pacino, Any Given Sunday) we see a coach telling his team what they must do in order to be successful. Lastly, pathos is the largest player of the game. The men on this football team, including their coach, all are very passionate about the game they play. It is an emotional experience for them all because of how much they care for football and for each other. The mere thought of the season being over because of a loss is not the way these men want their season to end, and they are going to fight for it, "We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when add up all those inches, that's gonna make the fucking difference between winning and losing!" (Pacino, Any Given Sunday). Finally, this quote shows the amount of emotion that the speakers put into some of his last few words to his team. That quote is similar to the final punch in a boxing match; this quote is what got the football team riled up the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Examples Of Ethos In Jfk Speech The number one thing most people fear is writing a speech and auditioning it publicly. Many people would rather die than to present publicly. Writing speeches to persuade people is not only a skill but art there needs to be a little bit of everything, The 3 common things in every persuasive speech is Pathos, Logos, and Ethos. Pathos is what appeals to the emotion or what tugs on the heart. Logos is something that has to do with statistics or logistics like financial cost and funding. Lastly, Ethos is using a credible source such as the former President John F. Kennedy. Analyzing JFK speech to fund NASA, I can take a look on how this 3 aspects appeal to a great persuasive speech. To begin, John F. Kennedy's speech contains innumerable amount of Pathos that really make the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. This for one greatens the trust and reliability the audience feels hence the effectiveness of the speech. A perfect example of this is the speaker, John F. Kennedy, the former President of the United States. He is a great example of reliability and trust being elected the representative of the free world. Also because of his young age at election he appeals to majority of taxpayers around his age. President Kennedy is not the only Ethos throughout the speech he mentions another within his speech like, "...choice which this country must make...under the leadership of the Space Committees of the Congress." This example of Ethos mentions the Space Committees of the Congress. A group of individuals that have been educated and are determined to use taxpayers money efficiently and wisely. This little blurb within the speech gives taxpayers comfort that their money is going to a reliable place. • 17. Rhetorical Analysis Of Markets And Moral By Michael Sandel What should be able to be bought and sold on the open market? Children? A kidney? The right to kill a rhino? These are just a few different topics Michael Sandel uses in the article "Markets and Morals" from the book Acting Out Culture. Sandel uses a few different techniques to create a persuasive article. One is showing his credibility, with a short header illustrating that he holds the title of Professor of Government at Harvard. Another is pathos, or appealing to a reader's emotions. Finally, there is logos, or presenting facts, which Sandel does expertly throughout the article. Michael Sandel's article Markets and Morals is a persuasive article because of the author's use of strong credibility, straight logic and facts, and powerful and emotional verbiage. This translates to an overwhelming sense of persuasiveness that stems from the appeal to the reader's senses of ethos, pathos, and logos. The author, Sandel, establishes credibility through several different techniques, which all combine to provide for a sense of ethos. As part of the article " Markets and Morals" in the book Acting Out Culture, a short foreword is included on Sandel. Immediately, this foreword creates credibility and respect for Sandel. His experiences, such as publishing several books(40), and as well his his education and position, as Professor of Government at Harvard award him instant respect. On page 47, Sandel says, "the moral vacancy of contemporary politics has a number of sources", and then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Use Of Pathos And Adverts In The Samsung Commercial People are constantly searching for the newest and most advanced technology. Phones are a predominant mobile device. The advertisements publicize different brands of smartphones. The Apple Commercial shows Dwayne Johnson using Siri on the iPhone 7 to get through his active day. The Samsung commercial shows Christoph Waltz using the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to display the busyness of the American lifestyle. These commercials use pathos, ethos, and logos. Pathos is an appeal that creates an emotional response from viewers. The use of pathos in the Apple commercial induces an amusing atmosphere. At the beginning of the advertisement, Dwayne Johnson is lifting weights, trimming a bonsai tree, reading movie lines, and having his head shaved while a news reporter on the television questions his ability to balance an impossible schedule. Dwayne Johnson participates in several dramatized scenes such as taking a selfie while floating in space in his astronaut attire ("iPhone 7 – The Rock x Siri Dominate the Day – Apple" internet). Dwayne Johnson has a nonchalant demeanor that contrasts with the frantic people around him. This creates an episode of laughter because he engages in such unusual activities in an effort to refute the reporter's doubt. The exaggeration of the various events in his day and Dwayne Johnson's interaction with other people throughout the commercial creates a comical reaction from viewers. The use of pathos in the Samsung commercial creates a light–hearted but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Reflection On Writing At this point in the semester I do not really feel any different than in the beginning. For the most part my writing has stayed the same as when I first started. The biggest change I have experienced in my writing is my ability to organize more effectively and to manage my time better. Although my writing has not changed increasingly, some parts of the writing process has been improved such as organization and time management. One thing I have learned during the course of this semester thus far are the terms logos, pathos, and ethos. I would not say that knowing the terms have significantly affected how I read now, as I feel like the skills needed to use logos, pathos, and ethos I had already been using. However, now I know terms and because of such I am able to organize the thoughts more sufficiently. My writing problems have consistently been a struggle with organization. Having specific terms for skill I already used has made organization much easier as I can categorize my critical thinking. I have written reading responses and comparison essays before so I cannot say that the writing in this class has impacted my writing significantly. Overall my writing has not changed much, however my organization skill have improved. I have always preferred organization and lists and categorizing, so learning what logos, pathos, and ethos are has given me a knew way to categorize information and has improved my organization and time management. While I feel confident that I haves used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Examples Of Pathos By Cesar Chavez "I have found that words that are loaded with pathos and create a seductive euphoric are apt to promote nonsense" (Gunter Grass). Cesar Chavez proves that ethos and pathos can actually be very effective in promoting their case. In an article he wrote, Chavez used the rhetorical strategies of ethos and pathos to make his case and express his opinion about violence and nonviolence. Both of these strategies proved to be very effective throughout his entire article. Chavez's main rhetorical strategy was pathos. Pathos led to how the story impacted the reader's beliefs; pathos is used to affect the feeling of the reader. It is effective because it allows the reader to connect with what is being said. Chavez uses the pathos argument to show American's feelings, "the American people and people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ethos is also effective because it tells the reader what the right thing to do is. Most people will do their best to follow in the pathway that is considered the right way. Chavez states, "the burdens of generations of poverty and powerlessness lie heavily in the fields of America. If we fail, there are those who will see violence as the shortcut to change" (Chavez). This is ethos because it is saying we are who have to protect people from violence and if we fail, then it is our own fault. This is hitting a reader's moral side to do the right thing, or believe the right thing. This is effective because it works alongside the pathos being used. The pathos grabs the reader's attention then the ethos takes that attention and tells you what to do and how. This is effective because if the writer has their readers attention by use of ethos and pathos and can get them to take the blame, they will be more likely to follow what is being said in order to redeem themselves. This way of blaming the reader is especially effective because people naturally do not like taking the blame and will take paths that allow them to escape this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Logos, Ethos, And Pathos Essay According to our texts and lectures, a good argument must be valid and strong, with evidence or premises, and a conclusion. The premises must be true and of quality, supported by reasoning or evidence of some sort. The premises must also logically support the conclusion or there would be no argument. The goal of an argument is to convince the reader to believe in something and to demonstrate that with careful reasoning and consideration, the writer 's point of view is legitimate. The key approaches of reasoning in an argument are persuasion tactics called logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos is the use of logic to persuade the reader with statements containing rational principles. Facts, such as statistics, or anything that can be proven is an appeal to logos. Ethos is a plan of action using ethics which help define credibility, reliability, and character through direct knowledge and/or experience in the situation at hand. Ethos is used by writers to build trust and to demonstrate their qualifications for the statements they make. Pathos is used to connect with the reader on an emotional level using tragedy, sadness, pity, and other sentimental specifics the reader can relate to. All three of these Greek artistic proofs are used in the readings of "Out Of Body Image," by an assistant professor of politics at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Caroline Heldman, whom focuses her work on issues of gender and race, and "X–Large Boys," by Allisa Quart, who is a graduate of Columbia ... • 37. How Does Cassius Use Ethos In Julius Caesar Julius Caesar Funeral Speech Analysis There are many different ways to appeal to an audience or any group of people. One very clever way of doing this would be to use logos, pathos and ethos. Logos uses inductive or deductive reasoning by citing facts as evidence, therefore proving their point using logical evidence. Another technique that an author can use is Pathos, when using pathos the author tries to appeal to the emotions of the audience by describing the effect of a situation, essentially trying to affect the audience's emotions. When using Ethos it is important for the author to establish themselves as a trustworthy, respectful, and knowledgeable person. Doing this the author can use ethical information to win over the audience. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the first times that Brutus uses Pathos is in Act three when he says, " Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead and live all as free men?(III. ii. ll. 23–24 )Brutus was saying that if Caesar would have not been killed that all of them would have become slaves, but now since he is dead they can all live as free men and women. By saying this Brutus was affecting the people's emotions by saying what would would have been their future by using pathos. The next rhetorical strategy that Brutus uses would be logos. Brutus uses logos when he says "... that I loved Caesar less, but I loved Rome more"(III. ii. l. 122). When Brutus says this he means that he killed Caesar for the good of Rome, not because he hated Caesar. The last rhetorical device that Brutus uses is ethos. Brutus uses ethos when he says " Believe me for mine honor , and have respect to mine honor, that you may believe"(II. ii. LL. 14–16). When Brutus says this he wants the plebeians to remember how honorable of a man he is and to keep that in mind so that they will believe what he has to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos Ethos, pathos, and logos are ingredients in the recipe for persuasion. For example, I would not have usually watched any video claiming to be academic with cartoon–like characters. I watched the video because I trust our instructor to provide us with credible information, I feel as if our instructor has a vested interest in the academic success of us all, and the video was produced in a manner that made it easy to grasp its concepts. Ethos, pathos, and logos as I understand the terms. Once watching the video and deciding to read further text on the appeals of persuasion, I was able to deduce that these three specific items are used in our everyday lives just about everywhere. • 45. Analysis Of Steven Brill 's Are We Any Safer In Steven Brill 's Are We Any Safer, an article which appeared in the September 2016 issue of The Atlantic, the rhetor attempts to educate the audience on the issue of post 9/11 security, and weather or not it has improved safety or not. The author makes his rhetorical response effective by using ethos, pathos, and logos to appeal to the audience. Ethos is the credibility of the rhetor, an essential part to any rhetorical response. No audience would waste their time listening to an unclarified rhetore. Pathos is emotional appeal, this can be used to influence the audience 's opinion, or to gain solid audience engagement. Logos is the logical appeal of the response. Does the piece make sense to the audience? If logos is lacking the rhetor has failed. In Steven Brill's article, he expertly balances resources and constraints, while using ethos, pathos, and logos to write a fitting response to the exigence of post 9/11 security efforts. In Steven Brill's Are We Any Safer, the exigence of the response is whether or not post 9/11 security precautions have been effective or not. Brill makes this clear by comparing and contrasting security pre and post 9/11. Brill says that on september 11th there were "16,000 poorly trained... private screeners"(62). As compared to today 's "46,000 screeners, almost all federal employees, trained by the Transportation Security Administration"(62). • 53. The Rhetorical Appeals : Is Google Making Us Stupid? Essay The purpose of this analysis is to examine the rhetorical appeals(ethos, etc.) of an argument presented by two different authors who have written about the subject of how technology is affecting our lives. In the article, "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" by Nicholas Carr, he describes how over the years, using technology has evolved his way of thinking in a negative way. On the other hand, in the article "How technology has changed our parenting lives" by Christine Organ, she promotes the use of technology, for it has improved her as a parent. This paper is to examine the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos found within each of the two articles. While each author had a different viewpoint, their rhetorical appeals show both similarities and differences. Rhetorical Appeal Ethos Organ is almost required to use ethos to prove that she understands how other parents can change their parenting habits. She proves this by saying "After my first son"(Organ 5). Which clearly states her position as a parent. Without this, it is very hard for readers to believe if her points have any credibility behind them or not. Then she mentions that she "felt like a less adequate mother because I didn't share the same feelings of the author."(Organ 9) to portray her life as she struggles as a parent. These help readers to understand where her frustration, and thankfulness comes from and can relate with her. Carr does not use very much ethos, for this article is purposed to the general ... The appeals of Pathos, Ethos, and Logos are used by all persuasive essay writers to prove the point they are trying to relay across and are applied to every argument. Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader, pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response, logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. When faced with the question why Native Americans' dying Language need to be saved the article "Saving America's Endangered Languages" brings up a number of valid points to help strengthen its argument. Because of this, there are many sports leagues that are culturally diverse. People have started the address the issue of diversity in sports. For example, Leo Kahane, Neil Longley, and Robert Simmons wrote an article titled "The Effects of Coworker Heterogeneity on Firm–Level Output: Assessing the Impacts of Cultural and Language Diversity in the National Hockey League," and this article talks about how teams and players have to deal with teammates that are culturally from a different background. Also, Alison J. Doherty wrote an article titled "Managing Cultural Diversity in Sport Organizations: A Theoretical Perspective" while this article talks about how sports organizations have to manage the diversity of the team while trying to be able to perform at their best. Both of these articles do a fine job in using certain elements of argument to make their respective articles persuasive. However, the article that talks about the National Hockey League uses logos, along with facts and evidence most successful while the other article uses mainly ethos and logos most effectively. The three authors that wrote about diversity in the National Hockey League (NHL) talk about the strategy of making a team come together because of the diversity by using logic and facts to prove their point. • 65. Act 3 Of Julius Caesar Rhetorical Analysis What exemplifies a speech in which persuasive appeals and devices convey emotion and persuade audience members without using false information? Antony's speech in Act III of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare exemplifies a speech in which persuasive techniques work to achieve the speaker's goal. Mark Antony's speech consists of several persuasive techniques that amalgamate to form an effective piece of persuasive rhetoric. Antony's speech is an effective piece of persuasive rhetoric because he uses ethos, pathos, and rhetorical questions. Mark Antony employs the persuasive appeal ethos to deliver an effective persuasive speech. Ethos refers to listening and trusting in the speaker. Antony uses a rhetorical question to not only have the crowd think of Caesar, but also to have the crowd think of Brutus. Antony says, "He hath brought many captives home to Rome, / Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill, / Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?" (III.ii.16–18). This exhibits skillful use of a rhetorical question because Antony not only contradicts Brutus about Caesar's ambition, but also causes the crowd to support Caesar's character. This rhetorical question bears the contradiction of Brutus because Antony refutes that Caesar was ambitious. This causes the crowd to question what ambition means and what their idea of Caesar is. He tries to sway the crowd to support Caesar by having them rethink what ambition is and what Brutus said. Antony also has the crowd question their belief of Caesar and of authority. Antony uses a rhetorical question in, "And to your heirs for ever, common pleasures, / To walk abroad, and recreate yourselves. / Here was a Caesar! when comes such another?" (III.ii.178–180). Antony persuasively uses a rhetorical question because he causes the crowd to question their meaning of authority. He also causes the crowd to once again question their idea of Caesar. Antony tries to sway the audience to realize how good of a ruler Caesar was and how rare it is that such a good ruler exists. In addition, Antony causes the crowd to recognize all the good that Caesar did for them. By using this rhetorical question, Antony shows how great a ruler Caesar was and that there is no one that is greater than he was. Advertisement are common used methods to persuade their potential customers to buy or support their product or idea. For example, skincare companies use proven facts to convince their customers that if they use their product, then their skin will look younger or feel younger; this is a form of logos, a term that refers to the use of logic and reason to support one's ideas. Instead of using facts to persuade people, pathos relies on appealing to a person's emotion. An example for pathos is NASAP, the animal rescue program. All throughout Rome, Brutus is known as being nobleman, yet, in his funeral speech to Caesar, he purposely talks in prose, a way of speaking or writing that is not formal. Brutus' ethos of nobility is so strong that patricians, noblemen, and plebeians, commoners, directly address Brutus as "the noble Brutus" (III.ii.11) Being as noble as he his, the commoners have a difficult time relating to him; yes, they may respect him, but believing or being convincing in what he says is more difficult for Brutus than Antony. In contrast, Antony can relate to the commoners and is not seen to have an overruling ethos; so, this is why Antony ultimately has a more persuasive speech. At the beginning of his speech, he is presented as not being at all against the conspirators, the group Brutus was apart of. He repeatedly kept reassuring the crowd that the conspirators were "all honorable men" (III.ii.81). By reassuring that the conspirators are honorable, the commoners believe in Antony's statement, which increases his authority power. Noticing that his authority is becoming more powerful, Antony decides to secretly turn against the conspirators. • 73. The Last Discovery Of America Rhetorical Analysis The Ultimate Persuasion Persuasion is asserted into many works using the methods of ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos is a call to authority while claiming a sense of dominance, a method where the author exemplifies his credentials. Pathos appeals to the emotional side of readers with the hope of coaxing them into sympathizing with author, therefore succumbing to the ideas presented in the work. The purpose of logos is to persuade the reader by proving a point logically, accompanied with reason. Various authors use persuasion in order to inflict their opinions upon readers. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rodriguez demonstrates this rhetorical style through the use of pity throughout the memoir. He attempts to pull the reader into complying with his conclusions through the use of pity in his stories, especially with racial incidents. Claiming that he "grew up wanting to be white," Rodriguez uses his race and the desire of "wanting to be colorless" as a way to generate pity from the reader (140). Using the comparison of young kids picking sides, he expresses that "brown was like the skinny or fat kids left over after the team captains chose sides. 'You take the rest'– my cue to wander away to the sidelines, to wander away" (5). Rodriguez tries to fabricate pity and sympathy from the reader by expressing a story of heartache, and comparing the atrocious classifications of race to innocent children picking teams. Not only does Rodrigues use the pity card when talking about his race but also with his lifestyle and social stature. Reaching out to the audience in his memoir, Rodriguez asks "does anybody know what I'm talking about? Ah, me. I am alone in my brown study. I can say anything I like. Nobody listens" (38). With this remark, Richard tries to portray himself as an outsider or an outcaste. Liz Murray narrates a story of when she was once poor, homeless and the daughter of two drug addicted parents. The audience can be for anyone that can relate to the situation. The most used rhetorical device was pathos which is what appeals to people's emotions to grab their attentions, following second would be ethos which appeals to how much of an expert someone is at something, and the last rhetorical device would be logos which is the appeal to someone's reasoning or logic. I've been in a situation where I was helping my mom clean houses and the bathrooms are completely filthy. Another example would be the scene when Liz is being taken away by Children Youth Services (CYS). While she was exiting the door, her father was reaching for a bent spoon to cook up on and string like object to put around his arm to shoot up. This appeals to the audience's emotion because it's upsetting that Liz had to be taken away from the only parent she actually thought was interesting. Around the age of seven I met with CYS maybe once a month to see how things were going between my mom and dad. Eventually they saw the problem and my dad was taken away from me for the ungrateful things he's done. Many companies use images to try and trigger their viewers emotions or facts to attempt to establish credibility and get consumers to purchase their product or to grasp the message they are trying to get across. Companies like Budweiser and Kleenex achieve their advertising goals by using ethos, pathos, and logos. The "Lost Puppy" Budweiser commercial did a very good job at reaching their viewers on an emotional level. This advertisement started at a clydesdale farm, which is Budweiser's signature animal, with a white lab puppy. Ethos Pathos Logos Advertisement Success and the Use of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos The main purpose of commercials and advertisements is to persuade the viewer to purchase the product that is advertised, but not all commercials are successful in this endeavor. Companies, such as Budweiser and Kleenex, appeal to the viewers' ethos, logos, and pathos in order to influence them to buy the advertised product(s). In order to appeal to each of the categories, companies use different tactics to catch viewers' attention. The use of ethos, logos, and pathos can make or break an advertisement based on how it is being used. Budweiser first released its "Lost Dog" commercial during Super Bowl XLIX (49). The advertisement centers itself around a small dog who, out of curiosity, enters a truck trailer without the knowledge of his owner. The dog then attempts to find its way back home but encounters an obstacle that it cannot overcome– a hungry wolf. When all hope seems lost, the dog's best friends, the Budweiser trademarked Clydesdale horses, come to save him. The dog and horses all make it back home to their owner at the end of the advertisement. The commercial appeals to the audience's pathos more than anything. Animals, especially dogs, have a way of pulling with human heartstrings. "...they can be used to transfer desired meanings to the products with which they are associated" (Phillips 1). • 89. How Is Ethos Used In Advertising There are millions of commercials. All of them have different audience and purpose. Advertisement maker tries to convey audience to look at their point of view, which can be political, social or convincing them to buy their product instead of others. According to the article "Rhetoric and Advertising" more than 2,000 years ago the Aristotle came up with three different categories to describe how people use rhetoric to persuade people: ethos, pathos and logos. Each of these terms describes different way to try to reach an audience and convince them to agree with you. Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response. Logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. Many ad makers use 2 of 3 techniques in their ad. Commercial maker uses logos and ethos a lot while making a commercial. For example, Luna commercial. Luna is a carpeting company who installs new carpet in houses at the discounted prices. They always have a promotions going on which includes get carpet in 2 rooms and get the 3rd one for free, by doing this they are attracting customers, this is example of ethos. • 93. Patrick Henry Persuasive Speech Throughout history, rhetoric has been used by great orators to persuade a people to believe one thing or take action on another. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, proved that a respectable argument must use ethos, pathos, and logos. Patrick Henry's "give me liberty" speech is well known to have inspired many people to take up arms against the British and start the American Revolution. He used ethos by proving he would die for his country, saying "give me liberty or give me death," pathos by explaining how poorly America is treated and how they are seen as inferiors, and also logos by stating all the atrocities Britain had done to America ("Patrick"). These same values must be applied in modern debate to vanquish the other side, and it is in these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ethos, or asserting credibility of the speaker, is an important tool in order to gain the judges trust and respect of the words spoken. Hillary Clinton currently has a poor credible record because of the email scandal, and as a result many voters feel less inclined to vote for her (O'Harrow). In a casual high school debate, ethos may be obtained by receiving good grades or having several reputable sources. Pathos is procured using less evidence, but still reaching out to the heart of the judge. Martin Luther King Jr's famous "I Have a Dream" speech became a turning point in equality for American people. His use of pathos, such as saying "the millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice," made people realize how unjust their treatment was of the African–American population (Eidenmuller). As for logos, logos uses logic in order to persuade the judge to believe a certain statement is true. For instance, many of the presidential debates in 2016 use logos in order to persuade the audience (Lee). The candidates often speak of the economic and societal consequences of a certain proposed tax or bill. Although ethos, pathos, and logos have historically been used in the greatest of speeches, it is these same principles which also lead to a triumphant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 97. The Pros And Cons Of Social Media In society today, we as a whole have replaced communicating face to face and have switched to expressing our ideas behind a screen. Because of this, a good number of arguments have arose from post and publications that state someone's opinion about an issue. One of the most highly used forms of media in our world today is social media, which are websites and technological apps that enable a person or group to create their own websites and pages for a specific purpose. Social media creates a second " world" where people can communicate with others across the world in a matter of seconds. Whenever you have a large collection of people in the same area, each stating their arguments and sides to something, there are going to be conflicting sides to every situation. Another way of describing the word argument is by using the words ethos, pathos, and logos. These three words are used when arguing on social media every single day. Ethos, which is the credibility and expertise that a person has on a specific topic, is used in arguments for appealing to people who are interested in their product or service. Rick Warren, author of "A Purpose Driven Life" gave a speech in February of 2006 about living a life of purpose. The speech was directed at people with an amount of influence in the world, big or small. The Purpose of this speech was to urge people to go out and use their talents, and influence to make the world a better place. Rick Warren has an excellent use of ethos, pathos, and logos in his speech. He uses his knowledge of people, and real life experiences to capture the audience's attention. Rick Starts his speech off by talking about a book. He doesn't come out and say what the book is, or what it is about. This captures the audience's attention from the beginning because they want to know more about the book. They also want to know more about the author and why he is speaking to them. He then goes into why he believes so many people are reading this book and as to why it is selling so many copies. In doing all of this, he gives reasons why he is qualified to be speaking on this particular topic, which is that he wrote a best selling book about living a life of purpose. This is an example of ethos because he is telling people to give their life's away to better the world instead of bettering themselves. The biggest appeal Rick Warren uses is logos. One of the important things he said that goes against what people believe was about money and happiness. Rick said "If money actually made you happy, then the wealthiest people in the world would be the happiest. And that I know, personally, I know, is not true" (5). People in the world think that the more money you have, the happier you will be, and Rick says it is not true. He also talks about all of the money that came pouring in after he wrote the best selling book. In his speech he says that the good life is about giving your life away. With all of the money that he got, he started giving it away, he did not want to use it on himself. In stating all of what he did with the money, he proves he is not a hypocrite. He asserts that the value behind an education is learning how to become aware of what we choose to think, and in doing so it brings freedom and vitality to an individual. His speech is very unorthodox, the structure is very different to normal graduation speeches, making his oration unique and special. Wallace uses rhetorical appeals to speak with recent graduates. The first rhetorical appeal used is Pathos. This is the rhetorical appeal he uses the most and can be found throughout his whole speech. The author must sound unbiased and present their expertise all while using proper syntax and grammar. Wallace displays Ethos in his speech by portraying himself as a confident and genuine person. For instance, Wallace tells his listeners, "if you're worried that I plan to present myself here as the wise, older fish explaining what water is to you younger fish, please don't be"(Wallace). By doing so, Wallace is displaying a sense of humility that comforts his audience, they now know he is a trustful person not pretending to be someone he is not. He also sounds very confident in what he will explain, he isn't there to say meaningless things, rather something significant to them. Calling his audience younger fish shows that his targeted audience is indeed young college graduates. Throughout his speech Wallace assures his listeners that he is not there to lecture them on unnecessary topics. This also gives him more credibility because it shows his audience he considered their concerns and made an effort to avoid them. Wallace's audience can now become more appreciative towards him and view him as a credible, competent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 121. Rhetorical Address Logos, pathos, and ethos have been existing to empower and strengthen our writing. In this rhetorical analysis essay, logos, pathos, and ethos that are used in the Annual Address will be clearly identified and evaluated. The Annual Address written by Joseph Jackson discusses the issues of discrimination and racism. It was written and delivered at the 84th Annual Session of the National Baptist Movement. Unlike many others back in history, Jackson believes that actions should be taken place before any demanded result. Jackson appeals to his fellow race to take action and adds credibility to his claims by using historical examples from the past. Also, Jackson makes personal connections with his targeted audience, black people, which builds trust between the speaker and the reader. We will be examining the context of the this speech and Jackson's perspective and claims. The Annual Address starts off discussing the foundation of this nation. Into a few paragraphs, he addresses the civil rights struggle and the reason behind it. About half of his speech address some advice and suggestions for the future of the black people. Joseph Jackson writes the Annual Address, telling the black people to put an action in their beliefs and for justice, in a way contradicting King's perspective on "peaceful' protests. In page two, Jackson states,"What is this struggle for civil rights? I answer, it is an effort of American citizens to get full equality of opportunity. It is the resolution and the determination that there shall be in these United States one class of citizens and that is first class citizens. This is a struggle to adopt in practice as well as theory the concept of man on which the Declaration of Independence is based, and to fully implement the Federal Constitution, one of the greatest documents for human freedom since the writing of the Magna Carta. The civil rights struggle is a struggle for full freedom, justice, and equality before the law. It is a struggle to bring from paper the lofty ideals of America, and to apply them in practice to the lives and actions of all Americans. In reality it is America's struggle to be herself, to fulfill the highest promises of her being, and to build a social order after ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They both use a variety of ethos, pathos, and logos in their ultimate goal of persuading the boys to join their tribes. Ralph's balance of rhetoric makes him the dominant leader based on his traits compared to Jack. Ralph and Jack use ethos, credibility, of leadership in attempt of winning the other boys' respect. For example, as Jack tries to gain the vote of the other boys he declares, "I ought to be chief... because I'm chapter chorister and head boy" (22). Jack feels his ability to sing and experience with controls would make him a good leader. When it comes to survival, singing will not benefit any of of the boys, so it is an unnecessary talent. He believe he has credibility as chapter chorister and head boy, so that makes him qualified for the position. Moreover, Ralph ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The boys forget the main goal, being rescued. Ralph repeatedly reminds them, "If a ship comes near the island... we must make a fire" (38). Ralph knows the chances of being rescued are slim, but creating a fire will increase those chances. This decision reveals Ralph's ability to collaborate with the others in order to get the necessary work done. The fire is a logical idea because is someone sees it they will eventually be rescued. Comparatively, Jack uses his resources when no one knows how to start a fire as he commands, "His specs–use them as burning glasses!" (40). Jack resourcefulness of using the glasses to start the fire not only works, but helps them get rescued, keeps them warms, and allows them to cook. Nevertheless, Jack forcefully taking Piggy's lenses is a symbol of lack of respect because he takes advantage of Piggy after viewing his vulnerability. Jack uses Piggy's glasses is resourceful because they can use the lenses to create a fire with the sunlight. Their decisions display their responsibility and how they both qualify to become ... • 129. Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos From this course, I learned many different concepts. The one that I feel will contribute the most to my life outside of this class would be pathos, ethos, and logos. Persuasion is something that most people deal with often. Pathos, ethos, and logos are something that has a significant role in persuasion. Pathos are used to appeal to emotions of the person. Using pathos to persuade someone you want to convince them with an emotional response. These may make your paper more effective, because if it has anything to do with their emotions it will make them more interested in what you have to say. An example of pathos would be "If we don't move soon, we're all going to die! Can't you see how dangerous it would be to stay?" This shows that if someone told you this it would affect how you felt about staying. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By using ethos, you are letting your audience know that what you are saying is true and not just what you want them to believe. An example of ethos would include something like "As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely produce the best results." When you hear that someone is a doctor, it makes you trust them when they are telling you anything about helping solve anything wrong with your body. Logos is a way of persuading your audience by logic. When using logos, you are persuading your audience more by reason. Using reason for persuading is when the persuader makes it seem like what they are persuading you is the best option. An example of logos would be "You don't need to jump off a bridge to know that it's a bad idea. Why then would you need to try drugs to know if they're damaging?" This would show you that it is common sense that doing drugs is bad, so don't try it to see if it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 133. Persuasive Literary Devices In Could We Be Amusing... Could We Be Amusing Ourselves to Death? The evolution of technology has become indescribable. Technology is prevalent in our society, as well as its portrayal in the media, a seemingly essential aspect of our everyday lives. Although many idolize how technology has improved our lives, many fail to recognize technology's faults. By using three persuasive literary devices (pathos, logos, and ethos), Neil Postman expresses his concern for technological advancement and possible failure in the book Amusing Ourselves to Death. Logos appeals to logic; when using a persuasive device such as logos, you are using logical reasoning to appeal to the reader. When using logos, you must include facts, statistics, and citing credible sources. By using ethos, the author conveys his ideas while being well aware of what he is talking about by utilizing credible sources. Pathos, however, conveys the author's ideas by appealing to the reader's emotions. Postman does an outstanding job of orchestrating a piece using the most popular persuasive elements. Postman was able to incorporate all three of these devices into his book, but the most prominent one in my opinion, and that helps to best convey Postman's point, is logos; statistics and facts are two things you very rarely can fight against. Over and over Postman uses facts on how the media is basically dumbing us down. For example, Postman pointed out that with the rise of the televised age there was then a decrease in literacy. ... In his article "How America Can Free Itself of Oil–Profitability," Amory Lovins addresses the many different issues associated with excessive oil consumption and the risks versus the benefits. Amory Lovins is a physicist, environmental scientist, writer, and Chairman/Chief Scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute. In paragraph 6 Lovins states that "Inefficient light trucks and cars, which consume 40% of our oil, are at the center of our oil habit. And ultralight and ultrastrong materials for vehicles are the No. 1 enabling technology for changing that." He reaffirms this point with many more facts and statistics throughout this article. Lovins' other main point is the benefit of using biofuels as a substitute for oil. He encourages his point of view in paragraph one on page three by saying that "Oil industry giants like Shell and BP are already preparing to move beyond oil by transforming themselves into energy companies." Lovins' argument is valid and provides good evidence to support his point of view. He mainly uses logos in his arguments. This article is full of statistics which may make the argument valid, but does not necessarily make it a good, well rounded argument. Although Lovins did a very good job using logos, he missed some very easy opportunities to use ethos and pathos in his argument as well. Providing information on how much America's overconsumption of oil is negatively affecting the environment would be a very effective method of using ethos and pathos in his argument without deviating from his "logos–style" of writing. The issue being gun control and how guns affect and/or end lives, the even bigger issue though is the issue of how people can or can not write about gun control to educate the public. Gun Control is an issue that needs to be avoided when trying to persuade readers of an opinion for two reasons, the issue of gun control is a terrible essay topic because there are too many emotions involved in gun control debates and because in general there is no good research on gun control. Berman's college coming to the deduction that sadly new gun laws are not in discussion. In other articles and essays ethos is used by writers to achieve the same goal as in "How Americans Actually Feel About Strong Gun Laws". Other authors such as Elisa Julliano use ethos to go against gun control. Using the same strategy the author turns the reader to getting rid of guns in America by showing credibility in several ways. First we see ethos expressed to stop gun control in "Pros/Cons: Gun Legislation" through the sentence, "'We, along with our fellow plaintiffs, were hopeful for a more favorable decision from the 2nd Circuit, but we are not surprised that this decision was handed down from this level,' said Scott Wilson, president of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League." As Julliano includes the work of others she shows the name of the person or group responsible for the information creating an in text citation. Using in text citations helps the writer show knowledge of the issue at hand giving the author credibility and raising the odds of readers sharing the opinions learned from "Pro/Con: Gun Legislation" and articles like it that are against having guns in America. Again in "Guns Safety Middle Ground" by Devin Hughes we see the author will use the work of others to credit his own. In the first interview excerpt, Corker used Ethos heavily with a few examples of Logos. Throughout the interview, Corker gives many examples of President Trump urging him to campaign, and how the President would endorse him. Corker also gives examples of many things he's done to provide Ethos that show his credibility as a political figure. To tie into the Ethos, Corker also used Logos when providing the dates of his meetings with other political figures. In the second interview excerpt, Corker uses Ethos and Pathos with a small amount of Logos. Ethos is shown in the statements given about his part in the Iran deal and the President's urging for him to run. It is also shown when Corker tells of the President inviting him to a private dinner and the other multiple occasions where the two have met. Similar to the first excerpt, these Ethos examples show his credibility to be a political figure. Julius Caesar Ethos Pathos Logos Essay Ethos, Pathos, Logos Some of the most famous writers from William Shakespeare to John Green have used three different persuasive techniques for several years. Have you ever heard of ethos, pathos, and logos? In the famous tragedy of Julius Caesar the author William Shakespeare uses ethos, pathos, and logos for persuading something or someone. In Julius Caesar Shakespeare uses these traits in Brutus's and Antony's funeral speeches to persuade the citizens of Rome to hear them out. In the tragedy Caesar was the emperor of Rome until his own senators killed him. The senators claimed they had to kill him because he was getting to ambitious and it was getting worse. They had to save the citizens before they start to get hurt by Caesar's actions. The most ethos, pathos, and logos takes place at the funeral when Brutus and Antony talk about why Caesar had to die. Ethos, Pathos, and logos are all used in the tragedy of Julius Caesar's funeral scene, some more effectively than others but they are all used to persuade the crowd one way or another. Antony is saying that Caesar was always fair and only a friend like him would understand that. Antony says "I will not do them wrong; I rather choose to wrong the dead, to wrong myself and you, than I will wrong such honorable men."(III.ii.122–124).
